Abstract:A triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) is an implicit surface with high interconnection and smoothness. However, only a few studies have focused on achieving a controlled negative Poisson’s ratio of TPMS. In this study, on the basis of the Schwarz primitive (P) surface, 3D auxetic structures are successfully implemented using a dual-period function. A series of shape-controllable, dual-period, deformation functions are obtained by summarizing the characteristics of periodic deformation functions (trigonometric and sawtooth) and applying Bezier curve fitting methods. Then, with the geometry originating from the P surface, two kinds of 3D auxetic structure design methods are proposed. The mechanical properties of the auxetic structure are analyzed and verified based on the control parameters. The following conclusions are derived. (1) Both 3D auxetic structures exhibit excellent 3D negative Poisson’s ratio properties. (2) The Poisson’s ratio can be effectively adjusted by the control parameters. (3) Adjustment of the Bezier fitting curve can optimize the 3D auxetic effect, resulting in a similar Poisson’s ratio in different directions. (4) The mapping relationship between mechanical properties and structural parameters is obtained by discretization sampling, and it can serve as a guide for functional applications. Moreover, based on the Gyroid (G) surface and P surface, a heterostructure with positive and negative Poisson’s ratio structures is obtained and applied to a stem in the hip joint. The simulation proves that the heterostructure can effectively reduce the tensile stress area between the bone and the implant, thereby effectively preventing the failure of the bone implant.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) tunable auxetic meta-structures find widespread applications across various domains. Nevertheless, the existing meta-structures have constrained tunability in their elastic constants, preventing the simultaneous attainment of high stiffness and a prominent auxetic effect. Based on a previously designed 2D tetra-missing rib (TMR) auxetic meta-structure, a novel 3D TMR honeycomb meta-structure was proposed with a tension/compression-twisting coupling effect in this work. To investigate the underlying deformation mechanism of the proposed design, a mechanics model of the elastic constants is formulated by adopting an energy-based approach. The accuracy of the theoretical formulations was then validated both experimentally and numerically. The results indicate the proposed design concurrently exhibits high stiffness and a noticeable auxetic effect. Moreover, tunable Poisson's ratios and elastic modulus within a relative wide range can be obtained by adjusting the geometrical parameters, enabling it adoptable for precise requirements in practical applications.

Abstract:Biomimetic composites have attracted much attention because they can provide effective approaches to achieve high toughness and stiffness with limited raw materials. Smart materials and sophisticated structures are the key factors to influence the mechanical behavior of biomimetic composites. In this work, a novel biomimetic composite was developed by introducing shear stiffening gel (SSG) into sutural structures with different geometry parameters. Low-velocity impact tests with fixed boundary and free boundary were conducted. Experimental results indicated that sutural interface could effectively improve the contact stiffness and the capacity to dissipate impact energy. The force transmissibility was also reduced significantly. Meanwhile, smaller tooth angles could lead to more remarkable rate-dependent behavior of the composites. Our study pointed out that incorporating the geometry futures of sutural composites such as the tooth angles and the thickness of SSG could improve the dynamic mechanical behavior of the composites, which could provide fundamental insights into the engineering application of sutural structure.

Abstract:Architectured composites with sutural tessellations across all length scales are found in the armor systems of many fauna and flora species in nature. These composites are typically composed of relatively stiff building blocks articulated via compliant wavy suture seam, showing a remarkable jigsaw-puzzle-like sutural tessellation. Inspired by these interesting natural architecture materials, bio-inspired designs of composite plates with hexagonal, diamond and rectangular building blocks and triangular suture tessellations were developed. Generalized closed-form analytical expressions for the effective stiffnesses along major axes of symmetry of these designs were derived and finite element (FE) simulations were performed to verify the analytical solution. Suture tessellation was shown to be essential in determining the mechanical properties of the composite plates. The influences of suture waviness, suture dominancy, the shape of the building blocks and the stiffness ratio of the suture tessellation were evaluated. The results provide design guidelines for widely tuning the mechanical properties of the biomimetic composite plates via tailoring suture tessellation.

Abstract:Journal of Sandwich Structures &Materials, Ahead of Print. Auxetic structures possess negative Poisson's ratio (NPR). They exhibit enhanced indentation resistance, synclastic deformation, high fracture toughness and high energy absorption. Several sorts of auxetic structures exist, such as re-entrant, arrowhead, chiral, etc. The re-entrant structure is the most common sort of auxetic structures. This paper investigates the mechanical behavior of the re-entrant auxetic structure using experimental and numerical methods. Two modified re-entrant topologies are proposed based on the original (conventional) re-entrant topology. Using these modified topologies, two re-entrant auxetic sandwich structures are designed and 3D printed using fused deposition modeling (FDM) out of polylactic acid (PLA). Conducting compression, three and four-point bending tests, the compressive and flexural performance of the two new re-entrant auxetic sandwich structures is studied and compared with the original (conventional) re-entrant structure. More specifically, Poisson's ratio, compressive modulus, flexural stiffness and maximum loads of the structures are focused and studied. The mechanical properties of auxetic sandwich structures are improved using modified topologies. The new re-entrant auxetic sandwich structures show 11% higher normalized compressive modulus and 9% higher normalized flexural stiffness than the original re-entrant structure.

Abstract:Journal of Sandwich Structures &Materials, Ahead of Print. Mechanical metamaterials exhibit special properties that cannot be realized in traditional materials. To enable a metamaterial with a sequential Poisson's ratio and controllable expansion, a 2D-graded hybrid re-entrant honeycomb is designed in this work by coupling graded re-entrant unit cells with negative and positive Poisson's ratios. The correlation between Poisson's ratio and structural location under tension is studied by finite element analysis and experiments. The influence of microstructural parameters, including base angle, height ratio, and internal angle, on the relationship between the Poisson's ratio and structural location is systematically analyzed. The theoretical analysis shows that the 2D-graded hybrid metastructures exhibit auxetic behavior with a linearly declined Poisson's ratio along the tensile direction due to the introduction of a height ratio, resulting in gradual expansion and elongation. Furthermore, adjusting the variation of internal angles at a small height ratio can enhance the negative Poisson's ratio of the 2D-graded hybrid re-entrant honeycomb. Finally, a 3D-graded conical metastructure exhibiting linear auxeticity is constructed based on the 2D-graded lattice. Considering their designed linearity of deformation under tension, the 2D- and 3D-graded metastructures can facilitate the design of conical profiles for an extendable rocket nozzle and other deployable devices.

Abstract:The 3D auxetic buckling pattern in the compression process is used to design auxetic structures. However, obtaining this pattern is time consuming and unintentional. In this paper, three auxetic structures, namely, globally deformed cross-frustum (GC) structure, partially deformed cross-frustum (PC) structure, and core deformed cross-frustum (CC) structure are proposed on the basis of the 3D auxetic deformation equation. The GC structure and PC structure can stably realize the 3D auxetic property through finite element analysis and experimental verification of structures. The structural strength of the latter structure is 2–5 times greater than that of the former structure. The CC structure exhibits a 3D auxetic property during the entire compression process and has excellent structural strength, which is greater than that of the first two structures. The rotational pattern can be also realized by the CC structure within the specified parameter range.A soft crawling robot with a motion module and perception module is designed by using the proposed auxetic structures. The motion module of the soft robot is designed by using the GC structure, and the perception module is realized by using the CC structure. The combination of modules can realize different functions, including advancement and rotation. The robot can be rapidly fabricated by digital light processing and has potential application value in medical treatment and other fields.

Abstract:A costly and inefficient manufacturing process significantly impedes broad applications of auxetics. Herein, a novel fabrication methodology based on assembling plates and tubes is presented. Instead of fabricating auxetic structures by regularly-used 3D printing and laser cutting techniques, inexpensive commonly-used materials were assembled by adhesive in a portable way. Quasi-static compression test was carried out experimentally and numerically. Based on reliable finite element models, parametric study and gradient design were conducted for structural optimization. Numerical results reveal the significance of each geometric parameter and give evidence of the advantages of gradient design. The proposed structures are not only favorable in mechanical performance in terms of multi-stage densification and programmable stiffness and strength, but also promising in low-cost and large-scale fabrication. Such a fabrication methodology has great potential in applications of auxetic structures in protective equipment and smart energy absorbers.
Nacre-inspired auxetic interlocking brick-and-mortar composites

Abstract:We design auxetic 3D interlocking brick-and-mortar composites inspired by nacre - a natural strong and resilient high-performance material. The influences of geometrical parameters and base material properties on their effective elastic properties are systematically investigated by finite element simulations and computational homogenization. The numerical results indicate that the composites exhibit tunable negative Poisson's ratios by properly tailoring the underlying microstructures. It is revealed that the auxetic behavior therein is attributed to the relative sliding between adjacent bricks with waviness, i.e., the sliding mechanism. These materials, with their auxetic properties and high fracture toughness, are well-suited for a wide range of engineering applications, such as serving as robust auxetic materials.

Direction-dependent bending resistance of 3D printed bio-inspired composites with asymmetric 3D articulated tiles

Abstract:Inspired by the protective armors in nature, composites with asymmetric 3D articulated tiles attached to a soft layer are designed and fabricated via a multi-material 3D printer. The bending resistance of the new designs are characterized via three-point bending experiments. Bending rigidity, strength, and final deflection of the designs are quantified and compared when loaded in two different in-plane and two different out-of-plane directions. It is found that in general, the designs with articulated tiles show direction-dependent bending behaviors with significantly increased bending rigidity, strength, and deflection to final failure in certain loading directions, as is attributed to the asymmetric tile articulation (asymmetric about the mid-plane of tiles) and an interesting sliding-induced auxetic effect. Analytical, numerical, and experimental analyses are conducted to unveil the underlying mechanisms.
3D Tiled Auxetic Metamaterial: A New Family of Mechanical Metamaterial with High Resilience and Mechanical Hysteresis

Abstract:For artificial materials, desired properties often conflict. For example, engineering materials often achieve high energy dissipation by sacrificing resilience and vice versa, or desired auxeticity by losing their isotropy, which limits their performance and applications. To solve these conflicts, a strategy is proposed to create novel mechanical metamaterial via 3D space filling tiles with engaging key‐channel pairs, exemplified via auxetic 3D keyed‐octahedron‐cuboctahedron metamaterials. This metamaterial shows high resilience while achieving large mechanical hysteresis synergistically under large compressive strain. Especially, this metamaterial exhibits ideal isotropy approaching the theoretical limit of isotropic Poisson's ratio,1, as rarely seen in existing 3D mechanical metamaterials. In addition, the new class of metamaterials provide wide tunability on mechanical properties and behaviors, including an unusual coupled auxeticity and twisting behavior under normal compression. The designing methodology is illustrated by the integral of numerical modeling, theoretical analysis, and experimental characterization. The new mechanical metamaterials have broad applications in actuators and dampers, soft robotics, biomedical materials, and engineering materials/systems for energy dissipation. Compressive mechanical behavior of additively manufactured 3D auxetic metamaterials with enhanced strength

Abstract:Compared with 2D auxetic metamaterials, 3D auxetic metamaterials present better structural, mechanical, and functional properties, which are more applicable in many potential applications in engineering fields. In this work, three types of 3D star‐shaped auxetic (SSA) structures, re‐entrant and star‐shaped composite auxetic (RSA) structures, and star‐rhombic auxetic (SRA) structures with small unit cell were proposed and fabricated by SLM method. The compressive behavior and energy absorption of the auxetic structures were explored and compared based on finite element method (FEM) verified by the compression test results of sample. Meanwhile, the numerical results present good agreements with the experimental results in terms of deformation mode, Poisson's ratio and compression behavior. The results revel that SRA structures exhibit superior elastic modulus, compressive strength, and energy absorption than SSA and RSA structures, which stems from the auxetic effect, obstruction of rhombic structures to the deformation of inclined struts and more plastic hinges. It is precisely because of the obstruction of rhombic structures that SRA structures exhibit weaken auxetic characteristic and even none auxetic behavior during the higher strain range. In addition, the length of the structural strut presents a significant impact on the energy absorption performance and compression strength of all the structures. Abstract:Auxetic structures, with re-entrant (inverted hexagonal or bow tie) unit cells, have received considerable interest due to their negative Poisson's ratio property that results in superior mechanical properties. This study proposes a simple method to create non-homogeneous re-entrant honeycombs by modifying the size of chevron crosslinks. The various structural designs were conceived by changing the geometrical dimensions of the crosslinks, namely the length (lcl) and the thickness (tcl), while maintaining the parameters of the re-entrant cell walls. The influence of the design parameters of chevron crosslinks on the mechanical behaviour of additively manufactured re-entrant honeycombs was investigated experimentally and numerically. The structures were fabricated using the Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) technique from polylactic acid (PLA) plastic. In-plane quasi-static compression tests were conducted to extract the elastic, plastic, and densification properties of the structures. Furthermore, a Finite Element (FE) model was developed via LS-DYNA R11.0 software, validated experimentally, and was then used to obtain a deeper insight into the deformation behaviour and auxetic performance of various designs. The obtained results revealed that the mechanical performance of re-entrant honeycombs can only be tuned by controlling the geometrical configuration of chevron crosslinks.

Achieving outstanding damping performance through bio-inspired sutural tessellations

Abstract:<p>Architectured biological composites with sutural tessellations possess excellent static and dynamic mechanical properties. In this study, a dynamic analysis of the damping performance of composites with sutural interfaces is carried out based on the viscoelastic tension-shear model. Analytical formulae that connect the damping properties (<em>i.e.</em>, the loss modulus, storage modulus, and loss factor) of the composites with the morphology and the viscoelastic properties of constituents in triangular and trapezoidal sutures emerge from rigorous derivation. Further, our model points out that the appropriately designed sutural interfaces can enhance and optimize effectively the damping performance, which is validated by the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) tests on 3D printed samples. Finally, the effects of the sutural morphology and the viscoelastic properties of constituents on the optimization of the damping performance of the composites are systematically discussed. Our model suggests that the slant angles in the sutural tessellations in typical biological composites all have evolved to the optimal values to achieve the best damping performance.</p>

Concurrent Geometrico-Topological Tuning of Nanoengineered Auxetic Lattices Fabricated by Material Extrusion for Enhancing Multifunctionality: Multiscale Experiments, Finite Element Modeling and Data-Driven Prediction

Abstract:This study demonstrates the multifunctional performance of innovative 2D auxetic lattices through a combination of multiscale experiments, finite element modeling and data-driven prediction. A geometric modeling approach utilizing Voronoi partitioning and a unique branch-stem-branch (BSB) structure, patterned according to 2D wallpaper symmetries, enables precise concurrent geometric and topological tuning of lattices across a continuous parameter space. Selected architectures are physically realized via material extrusion of polylactic acid (PLA) infused with carbon black (CB). Experimental characterizations, supported by Finite Element modeling, reveal the significant influence of BSB structure's design parameters on mechanical and piezoresistive performance under tensile loading, with a remarkable Poisson's ratio of -0.74, accompanied by a 15-fold increase in elastic stiffness and a 34-fold increase in strain sensitivity. Additionally, architecturally, and topologically tailored lattice structures exhibit tunable damage sensitivity, reflecting the rate of conductive network destruction within the lattice. This offers insights into the rapidity of cell wall failure, with a steeper slope of the piezoresistance curve in the inelastic regime indicating a faster breakdown and quicker onset of mechanical failure. Integration of Gaussian Process Regression enables accurate exploration of the design space beyond realized structures, highlighting the potential of these intelligent lattice structures for applications such as sensors and in situ health monitoring, marking a significant advancement in multifunctional materials.

Abstract:Selection of appropriate topology to use in the core of the sandwich structures is one of the serious challenges ahead to design of them. This study aims to investigate the influence of auxetic core topologies on the mechanical characteristics of fully integrated 3D printed polymeric sandwich structures. Specifically, three types of auxetic cores including square node anti-tetra chiral, re-entrant, and arrowhead were investigated and compared with the conventional honeycomb in terms of energy absorption, compressive strength, and Young’s modulus. The specimens were fabricated using FDM 3D printing method and quasi-static compression and low velocity impact loading tests were performed on the printed specimens. Moreover, finite element simulations were conducted to compare with experimental results and deformation patterns as well as for parametric study. Results indicate that the core topology is a critical parameter impressing the mechanical properties of sandwich structures, and using the auxetic cores improved the desirable properties of sandwich structures in both types of loading. Auxetic cores cause the sandwich structure to have more resistance to imported compression, while conventional honeycomb doesn’t have this superiority.

In-plane compression behavior of meta-tetrachiral and common auxetic structures

Abstract:Meta-tetrachiral structure, as a novel negative Poisson's ratio auxetic materials, combines the topological features of tetrachiral and anti-tetrachiral structures. Under the in-plane compression, comparative study on the mechanical properties of the meta-tetrachiral and the common tetrachiral and anti-tetrachiral structures is investigated experimentally and numerically. Three types of specimens are fabricated by using Stereo Lithography Apparatus (SLA) technology; numerical models are established by using FEA software, and verified by quasi-static compression tests. The simulated and experimental results together indicate that the in-plane deformation patterns of the meta-tetrachiral are limited by the different loading directions. The deformation mechanism of the meta-tetrachiral loaded along different directions is summarized by the deformation behavior of the specimens. The Young's modulus of the meta-tetrachiral loaded along different directions are larger than that of the anti-tetrachiral structure. The auxetic properties (NPR) of the meta-tetrachiral structures loaded along different directions are superior to that of the tetrachiral structure. In addition, it is found that the meta-tetrachiral loaded along the Y-direction shows a better performance in terms of energy absorption compared to the other structures. The effect of the meta-tetrachiral structures with different wall thicknesses on energy absorption was investigated.

Abstract:Biological composites can overcome the conflict between strength and toughness to achieve unprecedented mechanical properties in engineering materials. The suture joint, as a kind of heterogeneous architecture widely existing in biological tissues, is crucial to connect dissimilar components and to attain a tradeoff of all-sided functional performances. Therefore, the suture joints have attracted many researchers to theoretically investigate their mechanical response. However, most of the previous models focus on the sutural interface between two chemically similar stiff phases with (or without) a thin adhesive layer, which are under the framework of linear elasticity and small deformation. Here, a general model based on the finite deformation framework is proposed to explore the stiffness and toughness of chemically dissimilar suture joints connecting soft and stiff phases. Uniaxial tension tests are conducted to investigate the tensile response of the suture joints, and finite element simulations are implemented to explore the underlying mechanisms, considering both material nonlinearity and cohesive properties of the interface. Two failure modes are quantitively captured by our model. The stored elastic energy in the soft phase competes with the energy dissipation due to the interface debonding, which controls the transition among different failure modes. The toughness of the suture joints depends on not only the intrinsic strengths of the constituent materials and their cohesive strength, but also the interfacial geometry. This work provides the structure-property relationships of the soft/stiff suture joints and gives a foundational guidance of mechanical design towards high-performance bioinspired composites.
Novel conformal sandwich lattice structures: Design concept, fabrication and mechanical properties

Abstract:A novel conformal sandwich lattice is proposed by introducing the design concept of bioinspired sandwich structures into the microstructure design of triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices, and the mechanical properties of the conformal sandwich lattice (P-SC) with P-TPMS lattice skins and simple cubic (SC) plate lattice cores are investigated numerically and experimentally. The P-SC specimen manufactured by the laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) with glass bead-filled polyamide composite exhibits negligible anisotropy in its mechanical properties, as confirmed by tensile tests conducted on specimens fabricated at various build orientations. The elastic properties of the P-SC can be widely tailored by modifying the structural parameters. Especially, the anisotropic index can be tailored to obtain an elastically-isotropic P-SC sandwich lattice. Additionally, the P-SC exhibits superior elastic properties and energy absorption compared with the conventional lattices. The findings provide insights into the design flexibility of advanced high-performance structural materials for complex engineering applications.

Abstract:drome, with mild parkinsonism and pyramidal and anterior horn cell signs, together with mild urinary disturbance, and ha5 progressed to develop urinary incontinence. The exclusion of these 2 patients would not alter the statistical analysis. We know that many patients with cerebellar degeneration may only develop structural imaging evidence of cerebellar or brainstem atrophy after a number of years of disease; also that many patients with pathological OPCA may not show cerebellar atrophy on imaging, or even cerebellar signs during life [2]. Therefore, we prefer to base a possible or probable diagnosis of MSA on clinical grounds, rather than on structural imaging. The nosology of idiopathic late-onset cerebellar ataxia (ILOCA) is controversial. Some patients with pathology restricted to cerebellum and olives have only cerebellar signs in life and are often called cerebellar cortical atrophy (CCA). At the other extreme are patients whose brains show the pathology of OPCA, often with additional striatonigral degeneration, and contain oligodendroglial cytoplasmic inclusions [3] characteristic of MSA, and who in life had a cerebellar syndrome with additional autonomic failure, with or without parkinsonism or pyramidal signs. These are, therefore, examples of the OPCA variant of MSA. We agree with Coplin and Bird that not all sporadic OPCA cases necessarily have MSA. Whether the additional presence of pyramidal or extrapyramidal signs, or imaging evidence of brainstem atrophy {4], indicates OPCA as opposed to CCA, and what proportion of such cases will develop the autonomic failure characteristic of MSA, is currently unknown. In the present state of uncertainty, we nevertheless feel that when autonomic failure supervenes upon ILOCA (as it has in all our 10 patients) the pathological changes of OPCA, together with oligodendroglial inclusions, are very likely to be found in the brain. The majority of these brains will also show striatonigral degeneration. Sometimes this is evident clinically, but our study suggests that, even when subclinical, striatonigral degeneration may nevertheless be detectable in many of these patients using [‘8F]fluorodopa and [“C)diprenorphine PET scans.
