Abstract:This is a descriptive qualitative research which aimed at identifying the flight nurses' comprehension by about their role in the aero-medical multiprofesional team. A semi-structured interview was carried out with eight flight nurses from Curitiba-PR, from June to August 2009. The speeches were analyzed by the content analysis, from which three categories emerged. The first describes the responsibilities of the flight nurses as managers of the aero-medical mission, planning for before, during and after the transport, what includes the aircraft check-list and knowledge of the patient's case. The second category deals with aspects of these professionals as care providers to the aero-transferred patient. The third describes communication and team-work as fundamental requirements for flight nurses. It was concluded that the nurse in aero-medical team mixes management and caring in his/her professional practice by the use of specific competences.

Abstract:Objective: to map the competencies of aerospace nurses in disaster situations. Method: a scoping review following the steps recommended by the JBI and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. The review was conducted in three phases by two independent reviewers, with blinding, and supported by a third reviewer to resolve disagreements. Selection was based on the analysis of titles, descriptors, and abstracts, with specific eligibility criteria, followed by the full-text reading. At the end of the selection phase, 37 publications were included. Results: the results highlighted the need for the development of technical skills, knowledge of flight physiology, familiarity with aeronautical emergency procedures, communication skills, leadership, and responsibilities in aircraft preparation. During transport, nurses perform patient history taking (anamnesis), physical examinations, patient monitoring, clinical procedures, and manage in-flight complications. After the flight, they conduct documentation, develop procedures, sanitize clinical equipment, and replenish consumable materials. Conclusion: given the complexity of aerospace nursing practices in disaster situations, it is essential for professionals to develop competencies to ensure safe and effective care. There is a need to develop technologies, regulatory frameworks, and legal provisions for legal support, as well as future studies to validate and deepen the mapped competencies.

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the implementation of a nursing care protocol for trauma patients before, during and after the flight. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study carried out in an aeromedical service, using a checklist with 106 care: 79 before flight, 25 during, and 2 after flight. 97 patients were included in the study. Results: Most care (n = 59; 55.7%) was implemented, totaling 4,435, 1,480 and 192 cares performed before, during and after the flight, respectively. They stood out as unrealized care: protect ears with ear muffler (n = 55) and avoid leaving the pulse oximeter exposed to the sun's rays (n = 22). The main reason for the non-performance was lack of appeal (n = 94). Conclusion: Although most protocol care has been implemented, unrealized care compromises the quality of care, which requires the management of the service to provide more incentive to nurses and adequate resources for its implementation.

Abstract:Objective: To map the competencies of Primary Health Care nurses in border regions of Brazil and Paraguay. Method: Exploratory qualitative studyconducted between February and July 2020, with 64 nurses from six Brazilian municipalities bordering Paraguay. It was conducted in three stages: 1. Documentary study: analysis of legal documents to identify the nurse's competencies. 2. Application of instrument to the study population .3. Mapping of competencies, through the competencies expressed by nurses analyzed using the collective subject discourse technique. Results: Twenty-eight general competencies were identified, categorized as assistance and management, and five specific competencies required to work in border regions: conducting a situational diagnosis of the border community; attending to foreign users with active and humanized listening; communicating appropriately with foreign users; identifying the epidemiological profile of the border; and, understanding the health policies of the neighboring country. The competencies required for the work from the participants' perspective were included in the mapping. The competence gap identified in the mapping refers to educational practices in communities. Final considerations: The study identified the necessary competencies for nurses to work in border regions, but pointed out gaps in the training and continuing education of these professionals.

Abstract:A graphical expansion formula for non-commutative matrix integrals with values in a finite-dimensional real or complex von Neumann algebra is obtained in terms of ribbon graphs and their non-orientable counterpart called Moebius graphs. The contribution of each graph is an invariant of the topological type of the surface on which the graph is drawn. As an example, we calculate the integral on the group algebra of a finite group. We show that the integral is a generating function of the number of homomorphisms from the fundamental group of an arbitrary closed surface into the finite group. The graphical expansion formula yields a new proof of the classical theorems of Frobenius, Schur and Mednykh on these numbers.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To build and validate the content of a clinical simulation scenario for teaching in-hospital transport of critically ill patients.METHODS: A descriptive study of construction and validation of a clinical simulation scenario for teaching in-hospital transport. A scenario based on the literature was built, followed by validation, using the Delphi technique, by five specialists, with an agreement of 80%. The experts were selected through snowball sampling. An instrument was developed containing 26 topics to be assessed for relevance, clarity, objectivity, feasibility, current content, vocabulary, and a field for observations.RESULTS: Two rounds were carried out by the specialists to reach a consensus of 80%. According to the experts´ recommendation, the initial scenario was written more clearly and objectively, and divided into two parts: patient preparation and patient transport.CONCLUSION: In this study, the construction and validation of the scenario for teaching in-hospital transport were successfully performed. It may be applied in several services to evaluate the training of nursing undergraduate students, as well as for the professional improvement of those who work in the in-hospital transport service.

Abstract:Objective: to analyze the moral sensitivity of Brazilian emergency care nurses according to their personal and work characteristics. Method: this is a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study with a convenience sample. A total of 422 nurses from emergency care services in the five regions of Brazil took part. Sociodemographic and work-related information was collected, as well as the Brazilian version of the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire. After approval by the Research Ethics Committee, the data was collected using a self-administered form on the Google Forms Platform, organized using Excel software and analyzed using the R language. Results: nurses with longer experience in emergency care services showed higher levels in the interpersonal orientation, moral conflict and moral significance dimensions, while in the professional knowledge dimension, men showed higher levels, as evidenced by items that include confidence in nursing knowledge, intuition, experience and opinion. Conclusion: the differences in the nurses' moral sensitivity were due to their professional experience. It should be emphasized that valuing the sharing of intergenerational experiences in service could be a possible strategy for fostering moral competencies in the field of practice.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to use descriptive and phenomenological methods with Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) nurses to identify knowledge and skills required to provide care for critically ill patients in a combat environment. Unstructured interviews, focus groups, written narratives, group interviews, participant observation, and review of in-flight documentation of care were used to obtain data from 23 registered nurses who had deployed with CCATT missions. Dimensions that emerged from the data included: clinical and operational competence, personal, physical, and psychosocial readiness, soldier and survival skills, leadership, administrative concerns, group identification and integration, aircraft air and evacuation familiarity, and nurse characteristics. This information should be shared with CCATT trainers and unit personnel to better prepare them for the realities of future deployments. Future research could incorporate these data into a self-assessment scale to evaluate CCATT nurses' readiness for future deployments.

Abstract:Background: Nursing students on clinical placements as part of their professional training are routinely faced with situations involving ethical conflicts. The initial act of perceiving a situation as causing an ethical dilemma is the result of both the students’ personal values, drawn from their culture and families, and of the professional knowledge and values that they have acquired through training and experience. Objectives: Nursing students’ experiences on clinical placements in primary care settings were investigated in order to identify situations that they perceived as involving ethical conflict and describe the elements they took into consideration during their decision-making processes in these situations. Methods: The research design was qualitative descriptive case study. Around 50 students from three different intakes to a nursing degree answered a questionnaire and discussed it in focus groups. Ethical considerations: The study was designed in accordance with the principles guiding research with human beings and was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee. Results: Synthesised into two principal axes: (a) ethical conflicts in primary care, linked with the domains of working processes, professional nursing ethics and human and social rights and (b) students’ decision-making processes – realisation, reflection and intervention. Conclusion: The student nurses saw themselves both as actors and spectators in situations involving ethical problems and demanding moral deliberation, demonstrating the ability to base their arguments soundly. They tended to emphasise the possibilities offered by dialogue and that different ethical values must be respected to find fair solutions to ethical problems.

The effect of variation in miracidial exposure dose on laboratory infections of Ornithobilharzia turkestanicum in Lymnaea gedrosiana

Abstract:Abstract The laboratory infection of Lymnaea gedrosiana with 1,2,5,10 and 20 miracidia of Ornithobilharzia turkestanicum, resulted in infection rates of 54.5%, 57.1%, 62.5%, 84.0% and 100% respectively, with a prepatent period of 18–21 days. The numbers of cercariae shed daily by single snails exposed to one or 2 miracidia were significantly lower than from those exposed to 5,10 or 20 miracidia. Few cercariae were shed during the early patent period, but the number increased with the duration of infection. All infected snails died at the peak of cercarial shedding, and no infected snails survived more than 60 days after exposure to miracidia. The differences between the mean life-span of infected snails and non-infected snails in the control group were statistically significant (P < 0.001).

Abstract:Trauma is one of the main causes of death and disability in Brazil, requiring immediate and adequate care to minimize damage and sequelae. The effective performance of the nursing professional in the emergency room is essential for the recovery of the traumatized patient. The research proposes to analyze the challenges faced by nursing and the role of nurses in the emergency room, based on the scientific literature of the last five years. The qualitative and descriptive approach uses the integrative literature review modality. The nurse's work in the emergency room involves care and management, including team organization, quick decision-making, and a holistic approach to the trauma patient. The Fugulin Scale is an assistance instrument used to measure personnel, but it can be difficult to apply due to demand variability. It is critical to secure additional staff to ensure proper patient care. The emergency room has peculiarities that require technical and managerial skills from professionals, as well as sensitivity and empathy to offer humanized and individualized care, without judgments. Adequate preparation of professionals, a safe work environment and a complete team are essential for quality care. It is crucial to invest in continuing education, better equipped units and integrated teams to optimize care for trauma patients.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: To know the performance of nursing professionals in accredited outpatient radiology and diagnostic imaging services. Methods: Exploratory, qualitative study, conducted in January 2019, through interview with 21 coordinators in three outpatient imaging services in the Southeast region of Brazil. A textual corpus was formed and processed by a software and the data was analyzed using Reinert’s method. Results: After the organization of the content, two thematic blocks were elaborated: nursing assignments when assisting imaging exams, with three classes with similar content; and nursing and patient safety in radiology, with two classes with similar content. Conclusion: Nursing had a relevant role in quality management, developing actions to mitigate risks and damages, recording and managing adverse events and acting in educational processes, focusing on the quality of care and of images from the perspective of patient safety.
Creatine and membrane sialic acid contents of erythrocytes in patients with heart valve prostheses.

Abstract:The red cell damage induced by heart valve prostheses was investigated in 2 groups of patients with different heart valve replacements (mechanical or biological devices) by the determination of the creatine and membrane sialic acid contents in the erythrocytes. Red cell creatine did not increase, whereas sialic acid was lowered in both groups of patients, when compared with healthy controls. These findings were briefly discussed.

Abstract:Background: In the context of global health, the work of nurses is of key importance, given their role as diplomats in global health and as fundamental forces in the construction of global partnerships. This study seeks to identify the understanding and perceptions of Brazilian nursing faculty members regarding literacy of human rights related to health in nursing undergraduate programs. Methods: Methodological, quantitative and cross-sectional study carried out with nursing faculty members from 20 Brazilian higher education institutions. For the data collection, the Brazilian version of the Basic Core Competencies in Global Health questionnaire was used, available on the website Survey Monkey. In this article, the answers related to the domain "Health as a human right and development resource" were assessed. Descriptive statistics were applied, as well as Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Results: In total, 222 questionnaires were completed. As for the domain "Health as a human right and development resource", Cronbach's alpha coefficient corresponded to 0.839 for the three domain items. Most of the participants fully agreed on the relevance of the contents related to the theme for nurses' education. Conclusions: It is essential that nurses have contact with human rights international instruments that influence implementation of health and health research policies, though this content's treatment is still incipient in Brazilian nursing programs.

Abstract:Background: Cultural competence is central to ensuring effective culturally congruent care to patients and fostering positive work environments, particularly in multicultural settings. Objective: This study aimed to analyse the relationship between cultural competence, the nursing work environment, and the delivery of culturally congruent care in multicultural units of a healthcare organisation in Portugal. Method: This was a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study, targeting nurses from multicultural units. Data were collected using both online and paper-based questionnaires, which included the Cultural Competence Questionnaire for Help Professionals, the Nursing Work Index—Revised Scale (NWI-R-PT), and a single question assessing nurses' perceptions of the adequacy of the culturally congruent care they provide. Results: A moderate, positive correlation was identified between cultural competence and the Fundamentals for Nursing, while the nursing work environment was influenced by organisational support, professional category, and unit type. Discussion: The findings suggest that enhancing cultural knowledge and technical skills and reinforcing management support may positively impact culturally congruent care delivery in multicultural settings. Conclusion: This study contributes to nursing knowledge by highlighting the complex interactions between cultural competence and the work environment in Portuguese multicultural healthcare units. Future research should explore the impact of transcultural nursing leadership on multicultural work environments and in the delivery of culturally congruent care.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the demographic profile, training and practical experience of professionals who perform peripheral intravenous catheterization in Brazil. Method: this is a descriptive cross-sectional study, carried out in the five macroregions of Brazil with 2,584 nursing professionals who worked in direct care of patients undergoing peripheral intravenous catheterization, using a questionnaire containing professional demographic characteristics, training and experience. Data collection took place between July 2021 and May 2022. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA test, Pearson’s chi-square test for k independent samples and Tukey’s multiple comparison test and adjusted residuals were used. Results: most nursing professionals resided in the southeast macro-region and were women. The mean age of nurses was 39.52 (±8.74) years, technicians, 39.66 (±9.22), and nursing assistants, 40.61 (±10.57). The mean training time for nurses was 11.83 (±8.18) years, for nursing technicians, 10.81 (±7.62), and for nursing assistants, 11.19 (±8.33). During the training process, most professionals received lessons in pharmacology, vascular access devices and venous catheterization. The mean number of devices inserted by nurses, in a 12-hour shift, was lower than the mean inserted by technicians and nursing assistants. Conclusion: nurses are not recognized as professionals legally responsible for the peripheral intravenous catheterization procedure, and intravenous therapy implementation is predominantly carried out by technicians and nursing assistants. The training process is incipient.

Abstract:Abstract Objective: to analyze the factors that influence nurses’ decision-making process in Ibero-American university hospitals. Method: a case study with a qualitative approach and of the multicenter type, carried out with 30 Ibero-American nurses. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, analyzed by thematic categories and interpreted according to the theoretical framework of Creating Effective Organizations. Results: it was identified that the decision-making process permeates the development of nurses’ own competencies, suffering influences from health management training and previous individual experiences. The following categories emerged: Technical-scientific preparation in decision-making; Hierarchization of the decision-making process; and Autonomous professional practice. Conclusion: the absence/presence of a rigid hierarchy, as well as technical-scientific preparation and autonomy, are factors that limit or expand the range of possibilities in nurses’ decision-making, with consequences in care management. Thus, discussions about this theme should be encouraged, in order to promote nurses’ autonomy for decision-making and favor a reduction of bureaucracy in the processes that prevent/hinder advances in these services.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: to assess nursing students’ and nurses’ knowledge, satisfaction and self-confidence after a theoretical workshop on emergency care for traumatized children and clinical simulation. Methods: a quasi-experimental study, carried out with nursing students and nurses residing at a public university in southern Brazil. A workshop on pediatric trauma care was created and a mannequin was created for simulations. A knowledge pre-test and post-test and the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning instrument were applied to measure satisfaction and self-confidence in learning. For analysis, descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon test were used to compare means before and after intervention. Results: the difference between misses and hits was statistically significant (p<0.005), demonstrating an increase in participants’ knowledge after the workshop. Satisfaction and self-confidence were demonstrated in the instrument’s high scores. Conclusions: the effectiveness of the workshop in teaching-learning emergency care for pediatric trauma was demonstrated.
