Abstract:Objective: to map the competencies of aerospace nurses in disaster situations. Method: a scoping review following the steps recommended by the JBI and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. The review was conducted in three phases by two independent reviewers, with blinding, and supported by a third reviewer to resolve disagreements. Selection was based on the analysis of titles, descriptors, and abstracts, with specific eligibility criteria, followed by the full-text reading. At the end of the selection phase, 37 publications were included. Results: the results highlighted the need for the development of technical skills, knowledge of flight physiology, familiarity with aeronautical emergency procedures, communication skills, leadership, and responsibilities in aircraft preparation. During transport, nurses perform patient history taking (anamnesis), physical examinations, patient monitoring, clinical procedures, and manage in-flight complications. After the flight, they conduct documentation, develop procedures, sanitize clinical equipment, and replenish consumable materials. Conclusion: given the complexity of aerospace nursing practices in disaster situations, it is essential for professionals to develop competencies to ensure safe and effective care. There is a need to develop technologies, regulatory frameworks, and legal provisions for legal support, as well as future studies to validate and deepen the mapped competencies.

Abstract:This is a descriptive qualitative research which aimed at identifying the flight nurses' comprehension by about their role in the aero-medical multiprofesional team. A semi-structured interview was carried out with eight flight nurses from Curitiba-PR, from June to August 2009. The speeches were analyzed by the content analysis, from which three categories emerged. The first describes the responsibilities of the flight nurses as managers of the aero-medical mission, planning for before, during and after the transport, what includes the aircraft check-list and knowledge of the patient's case. The second category deals with aspects of these professionals as care providers to the aero-transferred patient. The third describes communication and team-work as fundamental requirements for flight nurses. It was concluded that the nurse in aero-medical team mixes management and caring in his/her professional practice by the use of specific competences.

Abstract:Introduction: The purpose of this study was to describe the roles, levels of responsibility and backgrounds of flight nurses employed in flight programs across the country and to determine if the role of the flight nurse varied as a function of crew configuration or size of program. Methods: In 1991, a retrospective statistical questionnaire was sent to 105 programs with 50 or more flights per month. Results: This survey provides national data regarding description of programs, evidence of the critical-care environment, professional profiles of flight nurses and practice differences between nurse and paramedic personnel. A difference in the practice for nurses existed in the larger programs (> or = 1,100 flights) with nurse/paramedic flight configurations. Nurses more frequently performed interventions regarding initiating and discontinuing medications (p = 0.00023)--especially paralyzing agents (p = 0.012) and blood (p = 0.0016)--and recognizing by physical exam the need for interventions to decrease intracranial pressure (p = 0.0194). In the larger programs, nurses also were more responsible for decision making regarding titration of medications (p = 0.027). Conclusions: Flight nurses practice in advanced autonomous roles, performing duties and skills consistent with critical care and emergency medicine in air medical transport.

Abstract:Objective: Discovering how transport nurses around the world are prepared and supported for a flight role may illuminate areas of best practice. This article reviews the flight nursing research, exploring what the international literature tells us about the role of flight nurses and discovering lessons from their experiences that may have particular relevance for the UK context. Methods: The results of a literature search and thematic synthesis for flight nursing research are described. Results: Thirteen research articles were obtained covering a broad range of countries. The scope of practice encompasses primary and secondary transport services and both civilian and military personnel. In an attempt to distill the role, work, and purpose of a flight nurse, a list of all the themes and categories that could be identified within the literature was assembled. These were inductively refined into 8 cluster themes, seeking to capture a broad description of the role of a nurse who flies. The definition of a "flight nurse" in the international context is debated. Thoughts related to training and education and, in particular, the nontechnical challenges of the role are discussed. Conclusion: This reflection provides insights that will influence the ongoing conversation around future air medical service development.

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the implementation of a nursing care protocol for trauma patients before, during and after the flight. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study carried out in an aeromedical service, using a checklist with 106 care: 79 before flight, 25 during, and 2 after flight. 97 patients were included in the study. Results: Most care (n = 59; 55.7%) was implemented, totaling 4,435, 1,480 and 192 cares performed before, during and after the flight, respectively. They stood out as unrealized care: protect ears with ear muffler (n = 55) and avoid leaving the pulse oximeter exposed to the sun's rays (n = 22). The main reason for the non-performance was lack of appeal (n = 94). Conclusion: Although most protocol care has been implemented, unrealized care compromises the quality of care, which requires the management of the service to provide more incentive to nurses and adequate resources for its implementation.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to use descriptive and phenomenological methods with Critical Care Air Transport Team (CCATT) nurses to identify knowledge and skills required to provide care for critically ill patients in a combat environment. Unstructured interviews, focus groups, written narratives, group interviews, participant observation, and review of in-flight documentation of care were used to obtain data from 23 registered nurses who had deployed with CCATT missions. Dimensions that emerged from the data included: clinical and operational competence, personal, physical, and psychosocial readiness, soldier and survival skills, leadership, administrative concerns, group identification and integration, aircraft air and evacuation familiarity, and nurse characteristics. This information should be shared with CCATT trainers and unit personnel to better prepare them for the realities of future deployments. Future research could incorporate these data into a self-assessment scale to evaluate CCATT nurses' readiness for future deployments.

Abstract:A graphical expansion formula for non-commutative matrix integrals with values in a finite-dimensional real or complex von Neumann algebra is obtained in terms of ribbon graphs and their non-orientable counterpart called Moebius graphs. The contribution of each graph is an invariant of the topological type of the surface on which the graph is drawn. As an example, we calculate the integral on the group algebra of a finite group. We show that the integral is a generating function of the number of homomorphisms from the fundamental group of an arbitrary closed surface into the finite group. The graphical expansion formula yields a new proof of the classical theorems of Frobenius, Schur and Mednykh on these numbers.
Education Needs of Australian Flight Nurses: A Qualitative Study

Abstract:Objective: Flight nurses work in physically challenging environments, often alone, in the confines of moving aircraft at altitudes with limited resources. Although this challenging environment has been previously described, there are no Australian studies that outline flight nurses' learning needs and the education activities they find useful in learning about their role. Methods: This was a qualitative exploratory study using one-on-one interviews with 8 currently practicing flight nurses from 1 air medical retrieval organization. Data were analyzed thematically. Results: Four key themes emerged: flight nurses need to learn how to work autonomously in a resource-constrained air medical environment, flight nurses need to learn how to develop physical and mental resilience to work in the air medical environment, flight nurses need to learn nontechnical skills such as flexibility and adaptability, and flight nurses learn how to perform in their role through formal and informal learning strategies. Conclusion: Existing clinical knowledge aids decision making as a sole practitioner in the resource-limited air medical environment. Previously unreported nontechnical skills of mental resilience, adaptability, and flexibility were highlighted. Flight nurses learn how to prepare for their role through simulation, case reviews, in situ observation through buddy flights, and a range of socially situated learning activities.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: To know the performance of nursing professionals in accredited outpatient radiology and diagnostic imaging services. Methods: Exploratory, qualitative study, conducted in January 2019, through interview with 21 coordinators in three outpatient imaging services in the Southeast region of Brazil. A textual corpus was formed and processed by a software and the data was analyzed using Reinert’s method. Results: After the organization of the content, two thematic blocks were elaborated: nursing assignments when assisting imaging exams, with three classes with similar content; and nursing and patient safety in radiology, with two classes with similar content. Conclusion: Nursing had a relevant role in quality management, developing actions to mitigate risks and damages, recording and managing adverse events and acting in educational processes, focusing on the quality of care and of images from the perspective of patient safety.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the empathy of nursing professionals who work in an urgency and emergency hospital service. Method: a cross-sectional study with 230 nursing professionals working in a public hospital in Maceió (Alagoas/Brazil). Data collected by sociodemographic questionnaire and Empathy Inventory between 2014 and 2015. Descriptive statistics of the data, analysis of variance and Cronbach's alpha of significance 0.05. Results: out of the 230 professionals, 59 were nurses and 171 mid-level nursing professionals, with a mean age of 42.3 years old, 205 were women, 120 were married, 175 had children and 108 had a college education. Participants had higher levels of affective sensitivity (82.9%) and perspective (73.0%), followed by altruism (64.7%) and interpersonal flexibility (59.7%). In general, there was a statistically significant difference between the nursing professionals in relation to empathy, and the nurse was more empathic (p value=0.039) than the other professionals. Conclusion: among the four factors that make up the empathy ability, the greater ability to take perspective, to raise awareness of other people's situations, to accept ideas that are foreign to theirs, and to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of others, have stood out among the nursing professionals in the emergency service. In nursing, empathy is generally associated with the professional category.

Abstract:Objective: to assess the leadership of nurses of a maternity hospital according to the nursing aides and technicians and the 360-degree feedback method. Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The population was 19 nurses and 96 nursing aides and assistants. Data were collected from May 2010 to July 2011 using a questionnaire based on the 360-degree method. Results: the nurses mentioned having a favourable performance in the four studied categories. The nursing aides and technicians disagreed with the recorded leadership performance of the nurses in the category "Communication" and "Support environment." The responses for the category "Role Model" were favourable in all items, especially PAPEL18. In "Management Style", the highest favourable rating was 79% for GESTAO16. Conclusion: the categories "Communication" and "Support Environment" revealed a greater fragility of the nurses in comparison to the categories "Role Model" and "Management Style".

Abstract:Objective: to analyze the moral sensitivity of Brazilian emergency care nurses according to their personal and work characteristics. Method: this is a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study with a convenience sample. A total of 422 nurses from emergency care services in the five regions of Brazil took part. Sociodemographic and work-related information was collected, as well as the Brazilian version of the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire. After approval by the Research Ethics Committee, the data was collected using a self-administered form on the Google Forms Platform, organized using Excel software and analyzed using the R language. Results: nurses with longer experience in emergency care services showed higher levels in the interpersonal orientation, moral conflict and moral significance dimensions, while in the professional knowledge dimension, men showed higher levels, as evidenced by items that include confidence in nursing knowledge, intuition, experience and opinion. Conclusion: the differences in the nurses' moral sensitivity were due to their professional experience. It should be emphasized that valuing the sharing of intergenerational experiences in service could be a possible strategy for fostering moral competencies in the field of practice.

Abstract:Purpose of review Four years after the launch of the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology, it is of interest to assess its role in European and Global Patient Safety efforts. Recent findings The Declaration is widely supported, not only in Europe, but also has attracted much attention and support globally. In Europe, it represented a major step in European-wide patient safety networking and initiatives. The European Patient Safety Task Force, created jointly by the European Board of Anaesthesiology and the European Society of Anaesthesiology, has developed useful monitoring and introduction tools. A new Patient Safety Committee is being introduced, and this will facilitate current and future initiatives. Summary The launch of Helsinki Declaration of Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology in 2010 was a major step forward for patient safety initiatives in European and Global anesthesiology. Several steps have been taken in the 4 years that have passed, but the task needs continuous attention to ensure that every patient received the safest possible anesthesiology care.

Abstract:Introduction: The quality of healthcare has multiple dimensions, but the issue of patient safety stands out due to the impact it has on health outcomes, particularly on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), expressly SDG3. In the services that we propose to study, the patient-safety culture had never been evaluated. Aim: To evaluate nurses' perceptions of the patient-safety culture in the Emergency and Critical Care Services of the Maternal and Child Department of a University Hospital and to identify strengths, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement. Methods: This an exploratory, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture as an instrument for data collection. The population were all nurses working in the emergency and critical care services of the maternal and child-health department, constituted, at the time of writing, by 184 nurses, with a response rate of 45.7%. Results: Applying the guidelines from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), only teamwork within units had a score greater than 75%. For this reason, it is considered the strength (fortress) in the study. The lowest-rated were non-punitive responses to errors and open communication. Conclusion: The overall average percentage score is below the benchmark of the AHRQ, indicating that issue of patient safety is not considered a high priority, or that the best strategies to make it visible have not yet been found. One of the important implications of this study is the opportunity to carry out a deep reflection, within the organization, that allows the development of a non-punitive work environment that is open to dialogue, and that allows the provision of safe nursing care.

Abstract:Objective: To describe nurses' research knowledge, attitudes, and practices within an academic hospital system. Background: Hospitals are investing in research resources to meet Magnet® goals and advance the science of nursing, but nurses' specific needs for support are not well characterized and may vary by setting. Methods: We conducted an anonymous online survey of RNs at an academic hospital system in 2019-2020 using the validated Nurses' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Research Survey. Results: Respondents (N = 99) indicated high willingness to engage in research-related tasks but low or moderate knowledge of and ability to perform them. Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of research increased with level of education, although gaps between willingness to engage versus knowledge and ability persisted even among doctorally prepared nurses. Conclusions: Research support for clinical nurses should leverage enthusiasm for research and focus on developing and applying specific practical skills, even among nurses with advanced degrees.
The effect of variation in miracidial exposure dose on laboratory infections of Ornithobilharzia turkestanicum in Lymnaea gedrosiana

Abstract:Abstract The laboratory infection of Lymnaea gedrosiana with 1,2,5,10 and 20 miracidia of Ornithobilharzia turkestanicum, resulted in infection rates of 54.5%, 57.1%, 62.5%, 84.0% and 100% respectively, with a prepatent period of 18–21 days. The numbers of cercariae shed daily by single snails exposed to one or 2 miracidia were significantly lower than from those exposed to 5,10 or 20 miracidia. Few cercariae were shed during the early patent period, but the number increased with the duration of infection. All infected snails died at the peak of cercarial shedding, and no infected snails survived more than 60 days after exposure to miracidia. The differences between the mean life-span of infected snails and non-infected snails in the control group were statistically significant (P < 0.001).

Abstract:Background: In the context of global health, the work of nurses is of key importance, given their role as diplomats in global health and as fundamental forces in the construction of global partnerships. This study seeks to identify the understanding and perceptions of Brazilian nursing faculty members regarding literacy of human rights related to health in nursing undergraduate programs. Methods: Methodological, quantitative and cross-sectional study carried out with nursing faculty members from 20 Brazilian higher education institutions. For the data collection, the Brazilian version of the Basic Core Competencies in Global Health questionnaire was used, available on the website Survey Monkey. In this article, the answers related to the domain "Health as a human right and development resource" were assessed. Descriptive statistics were applied, as well as Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Results: In total, 222 questionnaires were completed. As for the domain "Health as a human right and development resource", Cronbach's alpha coefficient corresponded to 0.839 for the three domain items. Most of the participants fully agreed on the relevance of the contents related to the theme for nurses' education. Conclusions: It is essential that nurses have contact with human rights international instruments that influence implementation of health and health research policies, though this content's treatment is still incipient in Brazilian nursing programs.
