Abstract:Soft robotic gloves have been widely researched to enhance the quality of life of people who cannot use their hands freely. Despite significant advancements in this field, most existing solutions have not adequately addressed adaptability to various individuals and tasks. Our robot overcomes these challenges through a novel passive extension mechanism, which enables adjustment of assistance torque for each finger joint adequately to various situations. To enable diverse assistance torque profiles without the need for extra actuators, two passive extensors with different moment arms for each finger joint have been implemented. A variable stiffness passive extensor adjuster (VSPE adjuster) is designed to change the stiffness and tension of each passive extensor easily. We've thoroughly verified the performance of each component through simulation and experiments. In the final demonstration of its feasibility, the robot was tested on three healthy participants and one participant with spinal cord injury, exhibiting its adaptability and promising potential for future real-world applications.

Abstract:The human hand plays a role in a variety of daily activities. This intricate instrument is vulnerable to trauma or neuromuscular disorders. Wearable robotic exoskeletons are an advanced technology with the potential to remarkably promote the recovery of hand function. However, the still face persistent challenges in mechanical and functional integration, with real-time control of the multiactuators in accordance with the motion intentions of the user being a particular sticking point. In this study, we demonstrated a newly-designed wearable robotic hand exoskeleton with multijoints, more degrees of freedom (DOFs), and a larger range of motion (ROM). The exoskeleton hand comprises six linear actuators (two for the thumb and the other four for the fingers) and can realize both independent movements of each digit and coordinative movement involving multiple fingers for grasp and pinch. The kinematic parameters of the hand exoskeleton were analyzed by a motion capture system. The exoskeleton showed higher ROM of the proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints compared with the other exoskeletons. Five classifiers including support vector machine (SVM), K-near neighbor (KNN), decision tree (DT), multilayer perceptron (MLP), and multichannel convolutional neural networks (multichannel CNN) were compared for the offline classification. The SVM and KNN had a higher accuracy than the others, reaching up to 99%. For the online classification, three out of the five subjects showed an accuracy of about 80%, and one subject showed an accuracy over 90%. These results suggest that the new wearable exoskeleton could facilitate hand rehabilitation for a larger ROM and higher dexterity and could be controlled according to the motion intention of the subjects.

Abstract:It has been clinically proven that exoskeletons are effective self-training rehabilitation or daily living assistance devices for patients with hand dysfunctions. However, exoskeleton-assisted hand exercises with high degrees-of-freedom are considered as challenging tasks because the digit space, especially the thumb, cannot accommodate enough actuators. In this article, we report a tendon-driven soft hand exoskeleton with a hybrid configuration for thumb actuation. The soft hand exoskeleton system uses the least number of actuators to realize full degrees-of-freedom actuation for all digits. It is tested on a stroke patient with hemiplegia and a healthy subject. The experimental results show that the hand exoskeleton could assist the stroke patient to accomplish various training tasks, such as thumb encircling, grasping, pinching, releasing, and writing. It was found that digit trajectories and joint angle changes of the stroke patient were close to those of the healthy subject. Especially, the range of motion of the stroke patient shows significant improvement with the hand exoskeleton assistance compared to that without the hand exoskeleton assistance. The research in this article paves the way to develop fully actuated soft hand exoskeleton that can be eventually integrated with an electroencephalogram or electromyography for self-training rehabilitation or daily living assistance.

Abstract:Robotic devices for rehabilitation and assistance are becoming crucial tools for improving the life quality of people with disabilities. The hand is one of the most affected upper-limb parts, but also fundamental for the subject’s interaction with the external environment. Wearability and portability, safety and comfort, lightness and small sizes, independent finger movement, efficacy in daily activities, sense-of-touch preservation, and affordability are the main features such devices should have. This paper will present an in-depth study of a thumb module for wearable hand exoskeletons, designed as a base concept to be adapted to the other fingers. Specifically, it exploits a new hybrid architecture (meaning that rigid and soft elements are included in the finger mechanism) to reduce the overall dimensions while remaining effective in force transmission. An embodiment of the mechanism is also presented and tested. As well as turning out to be small, light, and cheap, the new concept design demonstrates a minimum coverage of the finger range of motion of about 84% and an exerted force up to 16.78 N.

Abstract:This paper presents a portable, assistive, soft robotic glove designed to augment hand rehabilitation for individuals with functional grasp pathologies. The robotic glove utilizes soft actuators consisting of molded elastomeric chambers with fiber reinforcements that induce specific bending, twisting and extending trajectories under fluid pressurization. These soft actuators were mechanically programmed to match and support the range of motion of individual fingers. They demonstrated the ability to generate significant force when pressurized and exhibited low impedance when un-actuated. To operate the soft robotic glove, a control hardware system was designed and included fluidic pressure sensors in line with the hydraulic actuators and a closed-loop controller to regulate the pressure. Demonstrations with the complete system were performed to evaluate the ability of the soft robotic glove to carry out gross and precise functional grasping. Compared to existing devices, the soft robotic glove has the potential to increase user freedom and independence through its portable waist belt pack and open palm design.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the design of a soft wearable exoskeleton that comprises of a glove embedded with pneumatic actuators of variable stiffness for hand assistive and rehabilitation application. The device is lightweight and easily wearable due to the usage of soft pneumatic actuators. A key feature of the device is the variable stiffness of the actuators at different localities that not only conform to the finger profile during actuation, but also provides customizability for different hand dimensions. The actuators can achieve different bending profiles with variable stiffness implemented at different localities. Therefore, the device is able to perform different hand therapy exercises such as full fist, straight fist, hook fist and table top. The device was characterized in terms of its range of motion and maximum force output. Experiments were conducted to examine the differences between active and passive actuation. The results showed that the device could achieve hand grasping and pinching with acceptable range of motion and force.

Abstract:Exoskeleton robots are now prevalent in hand rehabilitation medical training, and they can effectively drive a variety of rehabilitative movements in a hand that has lost its motor ability. To adapt to the hand's physiological structure and motion characteristics, a hybrid-driven exoskeleton hand based on tendon rope and linkage and its validation experiments are proposed in this paper. The exoskeleton hand can assist one to five fingers independently or even assist a joint alone. Wearing the robot retains the physiological touch of the hand to the maximum extent, which is beneficial to rehabilitation. In addition, patients can also carry out rehabilitation training independently, and the control mode is simple and practical. To verify whether the exoskeleton can reach the grip standard of healthy hands, the Leap Motion Controller is also used to conduct experimental verification of finger movement wearing the exoskeleton. The results show that the maximum average differences between the angles of the finger flexion motion joints (MCP and PIP) with and without the exoskeleton are 10.33 degrees and 11.06 degrees. It was verified that the exoskeleton could meet the requirements of finger flexion and extension for assisted motion within a specific error range.

A soft wearable exoglove for rehabilitation assistance: a novel application of knitted shape-memory alloy as a flexible actuator

Abstract:We developed the knitted shape-memory alloy (SMA) as a flexible actuator and applied it to a soft wearable exoglove for rehabilitation assistance. Based on user needs and anthropometric data, we custom-designed the exoglove for three hemiplegic patients using the knitted-SMA actuator and evaluated its bending performance, gripping force and wearability under the four simulation conditions (S1–S4). To address the specific needs, both SMA plain- and double-knit modules were applied to the exoglove based on the patients' finger joint range of motion (ROMs). The joint ROMs of all fingers increased by 13.71% and the skin temperature increased by 2.21 °C after actuating the glove ( p = 0.006). The gripping force increased as much as 55.01%, when compared to the baseline. All patients were able to don and doff the developed glove independently, and positively evaluated their subjective satisfaction and thermal perception. The findings suggested the potential of the knitted SMA for the future development of soft wearable robots.

Abstract:Robot-assisted thumb rehabilitation can improve the hand function of stroke patients because the thumb accounts for 40% of hand function. However, existing thumb rehabilitation robots are limited in terms of portability, comfort, adaptability, and independent joint actuation. This article proposes an untethered adaptive thumb exoskeleton that actively assists the 3-degree-of-freedom movements of the thumb. The exoskeleton is composed of an adaptive thumb mechanism and a spherical mechanism. The kinematics, statics, and performances of the adaptive thumb mechanism and the spherical mechanism are analyzed. Experimental validation is performed to test the workspace, self-alignment, interaction forces, admittance controller, and grasping assistance performance of the exoskeleton. The workspace and self-aligning experiments prove that the proposed exoskeleton can achieve a large workspace of the thumb joints and realize self-alignment. The interaction force experimental results show that the exoskeleton can reduce the tangential interaction forces by 76.8% and improve comfort. Finally, the control and delicate grasping assistance experiments validate the exoskeleton’s ability to realize the delicate grasping of the thumb. These characteristics show that the thumb exoskeleton has the potential to assist delicate thumb rehabilitation.

Design, Control, and Experimental Evaluation of A Novel Robotic Glove System for Patients with Brachial Plexus Injuries

Abstract:This paper presents the development of an exoskeleton glove system for people who suffer from brachial plexus injuries, aiming to assist their lost grasping functionality. The robotic system consists of a portable glove system and an embedded controller. The glove system consists of Linear Series Elastic Actuators (LSEA), Rotary Series Elastic Actuators (RSEA), and optimized finger linkages to provide imitated human motion to each finger and a coupled motion of the hand. The design principles and optimization strategies were investigated to balance functionality, portability, and stability. The model-based force control strategy compensated with a backlash model and model-free force control strategy are presented and compared. Results show that our proposed model-free control method achieves the goal of accurate force control. Finally, experiments were conducted with the prototype of the developed integrated exoskeleton glove system. Results from 3 subjects with 150 trials show that our proposed exoskeleton glove system has the potential to be used as a rehabilitation device for patients.

Abstract:Purpose Many people suffer from injuries related to their hand. This research aims to focus on the improvement of the previously developed smart glove by using position and force control algorithms. The new smart glove may be used for both physiotherapy and assistance. Design/methodology/approach The proposed robot uses shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators coupled to an under-actuated tendon-driven mechanism. The proposed device, which is presented as a wearable glove attached to an actuation module, is capable of exerting extremely high forces to grasp objects in various hand configurations. The device’s performance is studied in physiotherapy and object manipulation tasks. In the physiotherapy mode, hand motion frequency is controlled, whereas the grasping force is controlled in the object manipulation mode. To simulate the proposed system behavior, the kinematic and dynamic equations of the proposed system have been derived. Findings The achieved results verify that the system is suitable to be used as part of a rehabilitation device in which it can flex and extend fingers with accurate trajectories and grasp objects efficiently. Specifically, it will be shown that using six SMA wires with the diameter of 0.25 mm, the proposed robot can provide 45 N gripping force for the patients. Originality/value The proposed robot uses SMA actuators and an under-actuated tendon-driven mechanism. The resulted robotic system, which is presented as a wearable glove attached to an actuation module, is capable of exerting extremely high force levels to grasp objects in various hand configurations. It is shown that the motion and exerted force of the robot may be controlled effectively in practice.

Abstract:In this paper, design of a wearable hand exoskeleton system for exercising flexion/extension of the fingers, is proposed. The exoskeleton was designed with a simple and wearable structure to aid finger motions in 1 degree of freedom (DOF). A hand grasping experiment by fully-abled people was performed to investigate general hand flexion/extension motions and the polynomial curve of general hand motions was obtained. To customize the hand exoskeleton for the user, the polynomial curve was adjusted to the joint range of motion (ROM) of the user and the optimal design of the exoskeleton structure was obtained using the optimization algorithm. A prototype divided into two parts (one part for the thumb, the other for rest fingers) was actuated by only two linear motors for compact size and light weight.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and validation of a wearable shoulder exoskeleton robot intended to serve as a platform for assistive controllers that can mitigate the risk of musculoskeletal disorders seen in workers. The design features a four-bar mechanism that moves the exoskeleton's center of mass from the upper shoulders to the user's torso, dual-purpose gravity compensation mechanism located inside the four-bar's linkages that supports the full gravitational loading from the exoskeleton with partial user's arm weight compensation, and a novel 6 degree-of-freedom (DoF) compliant misalignment compensation mechanism located between the end effector and the user's arm to allow shoulder translation while maintaining control of the arm's direction. Simulations show the four-bar design lowers the center of mass by cm and the kinematic chain can follow the motion of common upper arm trajectories. Experimental tests show the gravity compensation mechanism compensates gravitational loading within Nm over the range of shoulder motion and the misalignment compensation mechanism has the desired 6 DoF stiffness characteristics and range of motion to adjust for shoulder center translation. Finally, a workspace admittance controller was implemented and evaluated showing the system is capable of accurately reproducing simulated impedance behavior with transparent low-impedance human operation.

Abstract:Hand paralysis, caused by conditions such as spinal cord injuries, strokes, and arthritis, significantly hinders daily activities. Wearable exo-gloves and telerehabilitation offer effective hand training solutions to aid the recovery process. This study presents the development of lightweight wearable exo-gloves designed for finger telerehabilitation. The prototype uses NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators to control five fingers. Specialized end effectors target the metacarpophalangeal (MCP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints, mimicking human finger tendon actions. A variable structure controller, managed through a web-based Human–Machine Interface (HMI), allows remote adjustments. Thermal behavior, dynamics, and overall performance were modeled in MATLAB Simulink, with experimental validation confirming the model's efficacy. The phase transformation characteristics of NiTi shape memory wire were studied using the Souza–Auricchio model within COMSOL Multiphysics 6.2 software. Comparing the simulation to trial data showed an average error of 2.76°. The range of motion for the MCP, PIP, and DIP joints was 21°, 65°, and 60.3°, respectively. Additionally, a minimum torque of 0.2 Nm at each finger joint was observed, which is sufficient to overcome resistance and meet the torque requirements. Results demonstrate that integrating SMA actuators with telerehabilitation addresses the need for compact and efficient wearable devices, potentially improving patient outcomes through remote therapy.

Abstract:Degenerative diseases and injuries that compromise hand movement reduce individual autonomy and tend to cause financial and psychological problems to their family nucleus. To mitigate these limitations, over the past decade, hand exoskeletons have been designed to rehabilitate or enhance impaired hand movements. Although promising, these devices still have limitations, such as weight and cost. Moreover, the movements performed are not kinematically compatible with the joints, thereby reducing the achievements of the rehabilitation process. This article presents the biomimetic design of a soft hand exoskeleton actuated using artificial tendons designed to achieve low weight, volume, and cost, and to improve kinematic compatibility with the joints, comfort, and the sensitivity of the hand by allowing direct contact between the hand palm and objects. We employed two twisted string actuators and Bowden cables to move the artificial tendons and perform the grasping and opening of the hand. With this configuration, the heavy part of the system was reallocated to a test bench, allowing for a lightweight set of just 232 g attached to the arm. The system was triggered by the myoelectric signals of the biceps captured from the user’s skin to encourage the active participation of the user in the process. The device was evaluated by five healthy subjects who were asked to simulate a paralyzed hand, and manipulate different types of objects and perform grip strength. The results showed that the system was able to identify the intention of movement of the user with an accuracy of 90%, and the orthosis was able to enhance the ability of handling objects with gripping force up to 1.86 kgf.

Abstract:Hand rehabilitation is critical to the recovery of post-stroke patients. However, designing a modular mechanism of the hand to improve the human-machine compatibility and precision of operation is still a challenge. This paper proposes a new type of hand exoskeleton rehabilitation robot with nine degrees of freedom. With the flexible rods, the passive range of motion for finger adduction/abduction is extended under the premise of independent flexion/extension of the metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joint. Based on hand anatomy, the relationship between the offset of the metacarpophalangeal joint and the body height in the process of flexion and extension is discussed, and it is applied to the structure optimization and control system. The genetic algorithm is employed to achieve the size optimization, and the kinematics is analyzed. Finally, a prototype is built and preliminary experiments are carried out, including the range of motion and the grasping ability of the robot. The experimental results show that the robot can realize the patients' hand rehabilitation function and has certain adaptability.

Abstract:Wearable robots are envisioned to amplify the independence of people with movement impairments by providing daily physical assistance. For portable, comfortable, and safe devices, soft pneumatic-based robots are emerging as a potential solution. However, due to the inherent complexities, including compliance and nonlinear mechanical behavior, feedback control for facilitating human–robot interaction remains a challenge. Herein, we present the design, fabrication, and control architecture of a soft wearable robot that assists in supination and pronation of the forearm. The soft wearable robot integrates an antagonistic pair of pneumatic-based helical actuators to provide active pronation and supination torques. Our main contribution is a bio-inspired equilibrium-point control scheme for integrating proprioceptive feedback and exteroceptive input (e.g., the user’s muscle activation signals) directly with the on/off valve behavior of the soft pneumatic actuators. The proposed human–robot controller is directly inspired by the equilibrium-point hypothesis of motor control, which suggests that voluntary movements arise through shifts in the equilibrium state of the antagonistic muscle pair spanning a joint. We hypothesized that the proposed method would reduce the required effort during dynamic manipulation without affecting the error. In order to evaluate our proposed method, we recruited seven pediatric participants with movement disorders to perform two dynamic interaction tasks with a haptic manipulandum. Each task required the participant to track a sinusoidal trajectory while the haptic manipulandum behaved as a Spring-Dominate system or Inertia-Dominate system. Our results reveal that the soft wearable robot, when active, reduced user effort on average by 14%. This work demonstrates the practical implementation of an equilibrium-point volitional controller for wearable robots and provides a foundational path toward versatile, low-cost, and soft wearable robots.

Abstract:The size of a device and its adaptability to human properties are important factors in developing a wearable device. In wearable robot research, therefore, soft materials and tendon transmissions have been utilized to make robots compact and adaptable to the human body. However, when used for wearable robots, these methods sometimes cause uncertainties that originate from elongation of the soft material or from undefined human properties. In this research, to consider these uncertainties, we propose a data-driven method that identifies both kinematic and stiffness parameters using tension and wire stroke of the actuators. Through kinematic identification, a method is proposed to find the exact joint position as a function of the joint angle. Through stiffness identification, the relationship between the actuation force and the joint angle is obtained using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). As a result, by applying the proposed method to a specific robot, the research outlined in this paper verifies how the proposed method can be used in wearable robot applications. This work examines a novel wearable robot named Exo-Index, which assists a human’s index finger through the use of three actuators. The proposed identification methods enable control of the wearable robot to result in appropriate postures for grasping objects of different shapes and sizes.

Abstract:Common disabilities like stroke and spinal cord injuries may cause loss of motor function in hands. They can be treated with robot assisted rehabilitation techniques, like continuously opening and closing the hand with help of a robot, in a cheaper, and less time consuming manner than traditional methods. Hand exoskeletons are developed to assist rehabilitation, but their bulky nature brings with it certain challenges. As soft robots use elastomeric and fabric elements rather than heavy links, and operate with pneumatic, hydraulic or tendon based rather than traditional rotary or linear motors, soft hand exoskeletons are deemed a better option in relation to rehabilitation.
