Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a new platform for the construction of various functional materials for energy related applications. Here, a facile MOF templating method is developed to fabricate a hierarchical nickel-cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on conductive Ni foam (Ni-Co-S/NF) as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. A uniform 2D Co-MOF nanowall array is first grown in situ on Ni foam in aqueous solution at room temperature, and then the Co-MOF nanowalls are converted into hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanoarchitectures via an etching and ion-exchange reaction with Ni(NO3)(2), and a subsequent solvothermal sulfurization. Taking advantage of the compositional and structural merits of the hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanosheet array and conductive Ni foam, such as fast electron transportation, short ion diffusion path, abundant active sites and rich redox reactions, the obtained Ni-Co-S/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical capacitive performance (1406.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 53.9% retention at 10 A g(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles), which is superior to control CoS/NF. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled by using the as-fabricated Ni-Co-S/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode delivers a high energy density of 24.8 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 849.5 W kg(-1). Even when the power density is as high as 8.5 kW kg(-1), the ASC still exhibits a high energy density of 12.5 W h kg(-1). This facile synthetic strategy can also be extended to fabricate other hierarchical integrated electrodes for high-efficiency electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:A 3D redox‐active, robust, electrically conductive, ultramicroporous triazolate Fe‐MOF is employed as the exclusive electrode material for excellent gravimetric (304 F g−1) and areal (181 mF cm−2) capacitance coupled with high power and energy density even in durable solid‐state asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) devices with remarkable cycling stability, suppressing most of the reported MOF‐based electrochemical capacitors, representing encouraging energy storage materials. Exploitation of metal–organic framework (MOF) materials as active electrodes for energy storage or conversion is reasonably challenging owing to their poor robustness against various acidic/basic conditions and conventionally low electric conductivity. Keeping this in perspective, herein, a 3D ultramicroporous triazolate Fe‐MOF (abbreviated as Fe‐MET) is judiciously employed using cheap and commercially available starting materials. Fe‐MET possesses ultra‐stability against various chemical environments (pH‐1 to pH‐14 with varied organic solvents) and is highly electrically conductive (σ = 0.19 S m−1) in one fell swoop. By taking advantage of the properties mentioned above, Fe‐MET electrodes give prominence to electrochemical capacitor (EC) performance by delivering an astounding gravimetric (304 F g−1) and areal (181 mF cm−2) capacitance at 0.5 A g−1 current density with exceptionally high cycling stability. Implementation of Fe‐MET as an exclusive (by not using any conductive additives) EC electrode in solid‐state energy storage devices outperforms most of the reported MOF‐based EC materials and even surpasses certain porous carbon and graphene materials, showcasing superior capabilities and great promise compared to various other alternatives as energy storage materials.

Abstract:The energy storage field has witnessed a dramatic expansion in terms of short charging time of supercapacitors, especially in the highly active electrode materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have been extensively applied as precursors or templates for the synthesis of carbon, metal oxides/sulfides-based compounds as high-performance electrodes in supercapacitors. The MOFs-derived materials can be broadly divided into two groups: MOFs-derived porous carbon and MOFs-derived metal oxide/sulfide compounds. These MOFs-derived materials are characterized by unique porous structures, controllable structures, high surface area, good conductivity (MOFs-derived carbon) and outstanding electrochemical stability, meeting the requirements of the desirable specific capacitance and long-term cyclic performance of both electrochemical double layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors. However, MOFs-derived materials still suffer from the complex synthesis process and high production cost of MOFs precursors, difficulties in mass production, and unstable structure in highly corrosive electrolyte. In addition, the electrical conductivity of MOFs-derived metal oxides/sulfides needs to be further improved. In this review, we summarize the recent progresses in the development of MOFs-derived porous carbons and metal oxide/sulfide compounds and their applications in supercapacitors. The prospects and challenges of MOFs-derived carbon and metal oxide/sulfide compounds as highly effective and durable electrodes in supercapacitors are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have captured huge consideration owing to their high porosity structure and large surface area for their utilization in supercapacitors. The synthesis parameters play a vital role in the morphological and structural features of MOFs. Herein, a trimetallic metal-organic framework with the morphology of flower-based hierarchical microspheres has been synthesized by solvothermal method with optimization of the reaction duration. The hierarchical structure with connected nanosheets can provide more electroactive sites that lead to exceptional electrochemical performance. NiCoMn-MOF prepared with a reaction time of 48 h (MOF-48) delivers the specific capacitance of 1905 F/g (1 A/g) with rate capability of 71.52 % (10 A/g). Furthermore, MOF-48||Act-C asymmetric supercapacitor displays a remarkable capacitance of 226 F/g (1 A/g) and keeps 97 % of initial capacitance after 15000 continuous cycles. This asymmetric device has a power density of 6945.4 W/kg (10 A/g) and an energy density of 61.52 Wh/kg (1 A/g). Therefore, this study offers an effective technique to improve the electrochemical effectiveness of MOF-based electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:<p>Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) feature rich chemistry, ordered micro‐/mesoporous structure and uniformly distributed active sites, offering great scope for electrochemical energy storage (EES) applications. Given the particular importance of porosity for charge transport and catalysis, a critical assessment of its design, formation, and engineering is needed for the development and optimization of EES devices. Such efforts can be realized via the design of reticular chemistry, multiscale pore engineering, synthesis methodologies, and postsynthesis treatment, which remarkably expand the scope of applications. By imparting conductive backbones, guest compounds, and/or redox‐active centers, MOFs and their derivatives have been heavily explored for EES in the last decade. To improve the design of MOF‐based materials for EES, the strategies of pore architecturing of MOFs and their derivatives are systematically analyzed and their applications reviewed for supercapacitors and metal‐ion batteries. Potential challenges and future opportunities are also discussed to guide future development.</p>

Abstract:Recent advances based on metal‐organic frameworks and their derivatives in different dimensionalities ranging from nanopowders to nanofilms and aerogels, as well as self‐supporting electrodes for supercapacitors are summarized and highlighted. Furthermore, the key challenges and perspectives of metal‐organic frameworks and their derivatives‐based materials for the practical and sustainable electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications are briefly discussed. With the urgent demand for the achievement of carbon neutrality, novel nanomaterials, and environmentally friendly nanotechnologies are constantly being explored and continue to drive the sustainable development of energy storage and conversion installations. Among various candidate materials, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives with unique nanostructures have attracted increasing attention and intensive investigation for the construction of next generation electrode materials, benefitting from their unique intrinsic characteristics such as large specific surface area, high porosity, and chemical tunability as well as the interconnected channels. Nevertheless, the poor electrochemical conductivity severely limits their application prospects, hence a variety of nanocomposites with multifarious structures have been designed and proposed from different dimensionalities. In this review, recent advances based on MOFs and their derivatives in different dimensionalities ranging from 1D nanopowders to 2D nanofilms and 3D aerogels, as well as 4D self‐supporting electrodes for supercapacitors are summarized and highlighted. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most advanced crystal materials assembled by organic ligands as linkers and metal ions as center ions, which can be used as excellent materials for batteries and supercapacitors due to their high adjustable pore sizes, controllable structures, and specific surface areas. Carbon-based functional materials (e.g., graphene, reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes) have excellent electrochemical properties, thermal stability and electrical conductivity. The controllable integration of MOFs and carbon-based functional materials can further enhance the electrochemical stability and electrical conductivity of pristine MOFs. The assembled MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites possess superior rate, cycling properties and high reversibility, enabling the obtained MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites to be applied in wider fields. This review summarizes the recent research progress of MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites in the field of batteries and supercapacitors. In addition, the difficulties and challenges encountered by MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites are put forward. Finally, the future development of MOF/carbon-based functional material composites in electrochemical energy storage devices is prospected.

Abstract:Constructing a physiochemically proficient electrode for energy application is of pioneer in commercializing electronic devices. In that view, we engineered the nickel-incorporated calcium molybdate (NCMF) metal-organic framework (MOFs) with nanosheets in 3D floral morphology using the facile hydrothermal method. The floral structured NCMF0.5 MOFs when employed as the electrode in supercapacitor (SC) application exhibit impressive electrocatalytic performance. The advantage of a well-defined arrangement of petal-like sheets hierarchically, makes the KOH electrolyte access the inner area of the electrode resulting in a distinguished specific capacitance value of 822 F/g at 1 A/g current density. The fabricated NCMF0.5||AC asymmetric supercapacitor device (ASC) on account of the high specific surface area with more metal active sites contributes to achieving excellent energy and power density of 45 Wh/kg and 750 W/kg at the current density of 1 A/g. The stability and reproducibility of the constructed ASC device were 84 % and 99.4 %, respectively. Hereby, our findings clearly elucidate the substantial prospects attained by the synergistic effect in NCMF0.5 MOFs, which could be beneficial for developing sophisticated energy storage devices.

Abstract:The rigorous fabrication of electrode materials using upper-ranked porous precursor especially metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are challenging but appealing task to procure electrochemical energy storage and conversion system with altitudinous performance. Herein, we replenish the rational construction of atypical electrode of hollow Zn-Ni-Co-oxide (ZNCO) nanosheet arrays onto rGO garnished Ni foam (rGO/NF) via two step solution based method. Firstly, 2D Zn-Co-MOFs derived nanoleave arrays are prepared by co-precipitation method. Next, hollow and porous ZNCO nanostructure from 2D solid nanoleave arrays are achieved by ion-exchange and etching process conjoined with post annealing treatment. The as-fabricated hierarchical ZNCO nanosheet arrays offer large numbers of electroactive sites with short ion-diffusion pathways, reflecting the outstanding electrochemical performance in-terms of excellent specific capacity (267 mAh g-1) ultra-high rate capability (83.82% at 50 A/g) and long-term cycling life (~90.16%) in three electrode configuration for supercapacitor (SCs). Moreover, the hollow and porous ZNCO nanostructure responds as immensely active and substantial electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation with lowest onset potential of 0.27 V. To demonstrate the practicability, hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device is constructed using ZNCO@rGO-NF nanostructure as positive and rGO decorated MOF derived porous carbon (rGO-MDPC) as negative electrode. The as-assembled ZNCO//rGO-MDPC ASC device delivers higher energy density of 61.25 Wh kg-1 at the power density of 750 W kg-1 with long-term cyclic stability (<6% to its initial specific capacity value) after 6000 cycles.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great interest owing to their potential application in electrochemical energy storage. However, the poor conductivity, low structural stability and specific capacitance of pristine MOFs are their critical limitations for practical applications in energy storage devices. To solve these issues, different methods of posttreatments have been applied for MOFs to get their derivations, which are expected to exhibit unique porous structures, fascinating morphology and different chemical compositions, conductivity, stability as well as fasinating electrochemical behaviors. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, the systematic investigations on the effects of different posttreatment methods on electrochemical behaviors of MOF derivatives have never been reported. Here, we have synthesized a series of new monometallic and bimetallic Ni/Co-MOF with varied ratio of Ni to Co ions through self-assembly of metal ions and terephthalic acid (BDC). Four different types of posttreatment methods including sulfidation, carbonization, oxidation, and hydroxylation have been applied in the bimetallic Ni/Co-MOF with the ratio of Ni to Co equaling to 2:1 (Ni2Co1-MOF) due to its best electrochemical behavior among these MOF precursors, and the generated MOF derivatives are named as Ni2Co1-S, Ni2Co1-C, Ni2Co1-O and Ni2Co1-OH, respectively. The obtained optimized Ni2Co1-S-140-6 electrode shows the highest specific capacitance (1500 F g−1 at 1 A g−1), the best conductivity (Rs = 2.38Ω), excellent rate capability (73.3%) and the highest cycle stability (88.2% retention after 5000 cycles) in relation to that of Ni2Co1-C, Ni2Co1-O and Ni2Co1-OH electrodes, demonstrating that sulfidation is the best posttreatment strategy. Moreover, an aqueous asymmetric supercapacitor (A-ASC), assembled by the cathode of Ni2Co1-S-140-6 and the anode of PPy in-situ growing on acid-etched carbon cloth (AECC), exhibits a wide voltage window (1.7V), competitive energy density of 147 Wh kg–1 at the power density of 845 W kg–1 and ideal long-term stability with specific capacitance retention of 75.9% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g–1. This work offers full view of postsynthetic strategies of MOFs for developing high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new model family of chemically diverse materials, are considered promising high-rate energy storage materials owing to their complex hierarchy, large specific surface area, and active sites. At this point in time, nearly 90,000 MOFs have been synthesized. Nevertheless, stable pseudocapacitive charge storage has been manifested in a few net MOFs, so far. Boosting the inherent supercapacitance of MOFs without losing their stability during repeated cycles remains an issue. In this work, a mild method is represented to synthesize highly stable Fe-doped ZnMOF containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (ZnMOFFe −MWCNTs) using a solution of MOF precursor, MWCNTs, and iron(III) nitrate. The ZnMOFFe −MWCNTs supply rich electroactive sites, low charge transfer resistance, and large accessible regions for electrolytes. ZnMOFFe −MWCNTs deliver superior energy storage (@1 A/g, ∼2358 F/g) and cycling stability (@5000 cycles, capacitance retention of 90.18 %), surpassing most state-of-the-art supercapacitor materials known. To highlight the hands-on experience of the composite layer, an asymmetrical supercapacitor based on ZnMOFFe −MWCNTs and activated carbon is assembled, which reflects an energy density of 70.36 Wh/kg at the power density of 749.97 W/kg and unexpected cyclability (91.68 % of their initial capacitance after 5000 cycles). This work opens a new avenue toward future rational engineering for high-capacity energy storage materials.

Abstract:For miniaturized capacitive energy storage, volumetric and areal capacitances are more important metrics than gravimetric ones because of the constraints imposed by device volume and chip area. Typically used in commercial supercapacitors, porous carbons, although they provide a stable and reliable performance, lack volumetric performance because of their inherently low density and moderate capacitances. Here we report a high-performing electrode based on conductive hexaaminobenzene (HAB)-derived two-dimensional metal−organic frameworks (MOFs). In addition to possessing a high packing density and hierarchical porous structure, these MOFs also exhibit excellent chemical stability in both acidic and basic aqueous solutions, which is in sharp contrast to conventional MOFs. Submillimetre-thick pellets of HAB MOFs showed high volumetric capacitances up to 760 F cm−3 and high areal capacitances over 20 F cm−2. Furthermore, the HAB MOF electrodes exhibited highly reversible redox behaviours and good cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 90% after 12,000 cycles. These promising results demonstrate the potential of using redox-active conductive MOFs in energy-storage applications. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive electrodes for supercapacitors but generally suffer from low electric conductivity and chemical stability. Here the authors report stable conductive MOFs based on hexaminobenzene linker with volumetric and areal capacitances in excess of 700 F per cm3 and 15 F per cm2, respectively.

Abstract:There is much evidence (1-4) suggesting that a high concentration of serum cholesterol is an important factor in the etiology of atherosclerosis. It remains to be demonstrated, however, that therapeutic reduction in the serum level of this lipid will decrease the rate of formation, or cause dissolution of atheromata h man. In order to carry out such investigations, procedures for sustained depression of high cholesterol levels by tolerable means must be available. Nicotinic acid administered in large doses has been found to be an effective method in both clinical (5-8) and animal (9) studies. One of the drawbacks to using this form of therapy, however, has been the occurrence of uncomfortable side effects. Flushing, pruritus, and gastric irritation have been troublesome, especially early in the course of treatment. For this reason, attempts have been made to modify the drug in such a way as to eliminate its side effects while retaining its cholesterol-lowering potency. The purpose of this report is to present the results of a clinical investigation of one such drug modification, aluminum nicotinatel.

Abstract:The incorporation of renewable and sustainable energy sources in electric grids has been acknowledged as a potential strategy to solve the ever-growing environmental issues that result from the use of fossil fuels. In order to realize the full potential of these systems, advanced electrochemical energy storage devices must be developed. Recently, researchers have turned their attention toward obtaining high-performance electrode nanomaterials in order to develop these next-generation electrochemical systems. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), well-known for their relatively straightforward fabrication methods, high nanoscale porosities, robust nanostructures, and intrinsic crystallinities, have emerged as a class of nanomaterials potentially capable of meeting the stringent demands for these systems. Specifically, bridged MOFs and other MOF derivatives have recently been established as the primary MOF-based nanomaterials in studies on electrochemical systems, such as batteries and capacitors, as these nanomaterials have demonstrated the potential to address the poor conductivities that arise from separated nanoparticles in early reports on MOF-only systems. As such, we have focused this review on these nanomaterials, and in particular, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of electrochemical systems with a range of support materials, including carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers, graphene, metals, metal oxides, and conductive polymers. Finally, we highlight the remaining challenges and the possible opportunities for research in this field in order to facilitate future studies.

Abstract:Supercapacitors (SCs), showing excellent power density, long service life, and high reversibility, have received great attention because of the increasing demand for energy storage devices. To further improve their performance, it is essential to develop advanced electrode materials. One group of materials, porous crystalline solids referred to as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have proved to be excellent templates for synthesizing functional materials to be employed in the preparation of electrodes for SCs. In comparison to monometallic MOFs, bimetallic MOFs and their derivatives offer a number of advantages, including tunable electrochemical activity, high charge capacity, and improved electrical conductivity. This review focuses on the use of MOF-derived bimetallic materials in SCs, the origin of the improved performance, and the latest developments in the field. Furthermore, the challenges and perspectives in this research area are discussed.

Abstract:Up to now, the mainstream adoption of renewable energy has brought about substantial transformations in the electricity and energy sector. This shift has garnered considerable attention within the scientific community. Supercapacitors, known for their exceptional performance metrics like good charge/discharge capability, strong power density, as well as extended cycle longevity, have gained widespread traction across various sectors, including transportation and aviation. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique traits including adaptable structure, highly customizable synthetic methods, and high specific surface area, have emerged as strong candidates for electrode materials. For enhancing the performance, MOFs are commonly compounded with other conducting materials to increase capacitance. This paper provides a detailed analysis of various common preparation strategies and characteristics of MOFs. It summarizes the recent application of MOFs and their derivatives as supercapacitor electrodes alongside other carbon materials, metal compounds, and conductive polymers. Additionally, the challenges encountered by MOFs in the realm of supercapacitor applications are thoroughly discussed. Compared to previous reviews, the content of this paper is more comprehensive, offering readers a deeper understanding of the diverse applications of MOFs. Furthermore, it provides valuable suggestions and guidance for future progress and development in the field of MOFs.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are gaining popularity as energy storage devices (ESDs), and their electrode materials strongly influence their performance. There is no doubt that supercapacitors are capable and reliable ESDs for producing high power even when they operate at low energy levels. Surface modification of the materials can improve the power and energy density of the materials, which is beneficial for enhancing the electrochemical performance of the supercapacitor. During the past few years, more research has been reported to develop new electrode materials for improving the supercapacitors' energy density, charge retention, specific capacitance, stability, and rate performance. This review focuses on the execution of progressive organic-based electrode materials called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the supercapacitor, which offer high electrode stability, capacity, and adjustable pore size, making them promising for electrochemical energy storage applications (supercapacitors) despite challenges. The main purpose of this review is to explain the MOFs-based electrode materials and their progress in the supercapacitor field. Because MOFs allow many attributes like multiple dimensions, additional accept ratio, and higher surface area, MOF fabrication provides stronger bonding between metal and organic linkers than traditional material, making them progressive materials for supercapacitors. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of MOFs-based electrode materials are discussed.

Rational Design Of Bimetallic Metal - Organic Framework Composites And Their Derived Sulfides With Superior Electrochemical Performance To Remarkably Boost Oxygen Evolution And Supercapacitors

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and stable multi-functional metal-organic framework electrochemical materials is of prime importance for renewable energy technologies and electrocatalytic applications. Herein, a novel series of bimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) hybrid materials were successfully designedly fabricated through an in-situ growth and MOF-on-MOF strategies, namely as NiFeMOF/NF, NiCoMOF/NF, FeMOF/NiMOF/NF, and CoMOF/NiMOF/NF. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of bimetallic centers, conductive substrate and unique fabrication, they exhibit remarking electrochemical performance. Among them, FeMOF/NiMOF/NF composite with ultrathin nanosheets displays the best electrochecatalytic performance with ultralow overpotentials of 293 mV at 50 mA cm(-2) and 359 mV at 100 mA cm(-2) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and remarking electrochemical stability with high current density of 100 mA cm(-2) after testing for 24 h, that 88% of initial current density can be remained. Based on these fabricated bimetallic MOF hybrid materials as precursors, the corresponding MOF-derived nano sulfides were obtained with massive exposure of active sites. As an excellent supercapacitor electrode, NiCoS/NF-1 converted from CoMOF/NiMOF/NF shows admirable specific capacitance of 2815.4 F g(-1) at 1 mA cm(-2) and a remarkable rate capability of 82%.

Abstract:With the rapidly growing energy demand, supercapacitors have attracted much attention as an efficient and sustainable electrical energy storage solution. However, traditional materials have certain limitations in improving electrochemical performance and extending cycle life. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived porous carbons (PCs) have emerged to overcome these challenges in recent years. Due to their unique structures including high specific surface area, rich pore structure, and enhanced conductivity, they have become a research hotspot for supercapacitors electrode materials. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the widespread applications of MOF-derived PCs in the field of supercapacitors. Through various processing methods such as pyrolysis, activation, heteroatom doping, and combination with other active structures, MOF-derived PCs exhibit superior electrochemical properties. The article reviews the influences of different preparation methods and systematically analyzes their superior performance in improving maximum specific capacitance of MOF-derived PCs, achieving high-rate performance, and extending cycle life. By sorting out relevant research, it provides valuable inspiration for the future development of MOF-derived PCs in the field of supercapacitors. This research direction is expected to promote the performance improvement of supercapacitors and other electrochemical energy storage devices and contribute to the sustainable development of the clean energy field.
