Abstract:In recent years, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has gained wide acceptance in different fields by its advantages over other analytical techniques. NIR techniques have the ability to record spectrum for solid and liquid samples with rapid speed and non-destruction. This article discusses the features and development of NIR spectroscopy in the last few years; the analysis procedure and some mathematical tools to acquire specific information; some NIR techniques and new equipment that adopted in agriculture fields; the application of NIR in quality inspection of agricultural products, such as cereal, fruits, vegetables, and animal products; the application prospect of NIR spectroscopy in modern agriculture. As a rapid-response analytical tool, NIR spectroscopy may plays an important role in quality inspection of agricultural products.

Abstract:A rapid predictive method based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was developed to measure acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) of rice stem materials. A total of 207 samples were divided into two subsets, one subset (similar to 136 samples) for calibration and cross-validation and the other subset for independent external validation to evaluate the calibration equations. Different mathematical treatments were applied to obtain the best calibration and validation results. The highest coefficient of determination for calibration (R(2)) and coefficient of determination for cross-validation (1-VR) were 0.968 and 0.949 for ADF, 0.846 and 0.812 for NDF, and 0.897 and 0.843 for ADL, respectively. Independent external validation still gave a high coefficient of determination for external validation (r(2)) and a low standard error of performance (SEP) for the three parameters; the best validation results were SEP 0.933 and r(2) = 0.959 for ADIF, SEP = 2.228 and r(2) = 0.775 for NDF, and SEP = 0.616 and r(2) = 0.847 for ADL, indicating that NIR gave a sufficiently accurate prediction of ADF and ADL content of rice material but a less satisfactory prediction for NDF. This study suggested that routine screening for these forage quality parameters with large numbers of samples is possible with NIRS in early-generation selection in rice-breeding programs.
Broadening the Scope of Food Quality Control: a Calibration Transfer Strategy for Minimizing External Influences on Spectral Analysis

Abstract:Calibration transfer (CT) is an effective tool to address spectral inconsistencies and the decline in model prediction capabilities caused by various influences. This study introduced a modified semi-supervised parameterfree calibration enhancement (MSS-PFCE) strategy to enable calibration models extensively applicable across varying temperatures, instruments and orientations. Investigations conducted on three datasets of watermelon juice, corn, and apples were utilized to validate the efficacy of MSS-PFCE. The results showed that MSS-PFCE decreased the average RMSEP for slave spectrum predictions by 96.51%, 75.96%, and 23.04%, respectively. MSS-PFCE significantly outperformed the original SS-PFCE approach and three classical standardization methods (direct standardization (DS), piecewise direct standardization (PDS) and slope and bias correction (SBC)). Furthermore, MSS-PFCE required no standards and needed only 5%-10% of slave samples for CT, maintaining robust reliability across varying sample sizes and cost thresholds (cth). The conclusions were further examined in three additional datasets with these variations. Notably, MSS-PFCE exhibited high accuracy, fitting stability, low sample dependency, and versatile transferability, positioning it as a promising candidate for widespread implementation in visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) spectroscopy. This study has significant potential to enhance the applicability of quality analysis, broaden the scope of food quality control, and promote the sound development of the food industry.
Calibration model optimization for rice cooking characteristics by near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS)

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid method to estimate the cooking characteristics of rice. A total of 586 samples from rice breeding lines from 1999 to 2002, which had high variation for agronomy, location and year, were scanned by NIRS for calibration optimization by chemometric methods. Two subsets of 212 samples from one year and 400 samples from three years were employed to find suitable sample status for extending the NIRS utilities. There were three algorithms of PCA, PL1 and PL2, in which the first one was only based on the sample spectra variant and the remaining two based on the variant of both spectra and chemical characteristics to describe the relationship between any two neighboring samples. According to the results of calibration and validation by the three algorithms used, the suitable calibration samples could be chosen by the cutoff of neighborhood distance (NH) of 0.35, 0.4 and 0.45, respectively. For the cooking characteristics, the combination of SNV+D/‘1,4,4,1’ was the best pretreatment and the accuracy models were obtained with low SECV and high 1−VRof amylose content (1.42% and 0.95%), gel consistency (9.49 and 0.76mm) and alkali spread value (0.86 and 0.79 grade) . The models developed using brown rice and milled rice were superior to those using intact rice grains, but slightly poorer to those using their corresponding flour samples. Therefore, on-line monitoring of rice quality could be conducted in rice processing at milling stages. Due to the fewer sample mass destroyed, the brown rice (3g) and brown rice flour (3g or 0.5g), by which the NIRS models were successfully developed for cooking characteristic analyses, could be introduced into quality evaluation of germplasm and intermediate lines selection in breeding projects.

Abstract:Based on NIRS technique and partial least squares (PLS) algorithm, two calibration models were established tanalyze quantitatively fat content (FT) in brown rice grain and brown rice flour, respectively. The determination coefficients (R2) othese two models for FT were 94.44% and 95.54%, and the root mean square errors of cross validation (RMSECV) were 0.09% an0.08%, respectively. In external validation, the R2 value between the true value and predicted value were 79.51% and 87.10% for Fin brown rice grain and brown rice flour, and the root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) were 0.24% and 0.26%, and thaverage relative errors were 4.11% and 3.30%, respectively. These results indicated that the method of NIRS has relatively higaccuracy in prediction tests for FT in brown rice grain and brown rice flour and that the two mathematic models established in thpresent study should be useful for nutrient quality improvement in rice breeding program.

Abstract:The potential of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for non-destructive determination of quality parameters including oil and protein contents in shell-intact cottonseed was investigated. Linear partial least squares (PLS) and nonlinear least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) methods were used to develop the calibration models to determinate the protein and oil contents. Moreover, as variable selection techniques, the Monte Carlo uninformative variable elimination (MC-UVE) and the successive projections algorithm (SPA) were applied to improve the predictive ability of the model. Finally, the MC-UVE-LS-SVM models show the best prediction performance. The coefficient of determination (R-2), residual predictive deviation (RPD) and root mean squares error of prediction (RMSEP) were 0.959, 4.871 and 0.977 for protein, and 0.950, 4.429 and 0.834 for oil, respectively. The results indicate that NIR technology could be very useful for the rapid quality analysis of shell-intact cottonseed avoiding the need of grinding. Furthermore, the variable selection of MC-UVE can provide more robust and accurate calibration models than SPA. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Wheat is one of the most widely cultivated crops throughout the world. A great need exists for wheat quality assessment for breeding, processing, and products production purposes. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid, low-cost, simple, and nondestructive assessment method. Many advanced studies associated with NIRS for wheat quality assessment have been published recently, either introducing new chemometrics or attempting new assessment parameters to improve model robustness and accuracy. This review provides a comprehensive overview of NIRS methodology including its principle, spectra pretreatments, spectral wavelength selection, outlier disposal, dataset division, regression methods, and model evaluation. More importantly, the applications of NIRS in the determination of analytical parameters, rheological parameters, and end product quality of wheat are summarized. Although NIRS showed great potential in the quantitative determination of analytical parameters, there are still challenges in model robustness and accuracy in determining rheological parameters and end product quality for wheat products. Future model development needs to incorporate larger databases, integrate different spectroscopic techniques, and introduce cutting-edge chemometrics methods. In addition, calibration based on external factors should be considered to improve the predicted results of the model. The NIRS application in micronutrients needs to be extended. Last, the idea of combining standard product sensory attributes and spectra for model development deserves further study.

Abstract:A novel method was developed for the rapid determination of multi-indicators in corni fructus by means of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) based least squares support vector machine was investigated to increase the levels of quality control. The calibration models of moisture, extractum, morroniside and loganin were established using the PSO-LS-SVM algorithm. The performance of PSO-LS-SVM models was compared with partial least squares regression (PLSR) and back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN). The calibration and validation results of PSO-LS-SVM were superior to both PLS and BP-ANN. For PSO-LS-SVM models, the correlation coefficients (r) of calibrations were all above 0.942. The optimal prediction results were also achieved by PSO-LS-SVM models with the RMSEP (root mean square error of prediction) and RSEP (relative standard errors of prediction) less than 1.176 and 15.5% respectively. The results suggest that PSO-LS-SVM algorithm has a good model performance and high prediction accuracy. NIR has a potential value for rapid determination of multi-indicators in Corni Fructus.
On-line Monitoring of Traditional Chinese Medicinal Powder Blending Process by Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To establish a rapid method based on near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(NIR) to monitor the blending process of traditional Chinese medicinal powder on-line.METHODS NIR spectra were collected during the blending processes of mixtures consisting of Red Peony Root powder and defatted Spine Date Seed powder.Multivariate calibration models based on PLS regression were developed to correlate the collected spectra with the content of Red Peony Root powder.The optimal calibration model was applied to monitor the blending process in real time with noninterference.RESULTS After spectral pretreatment using multiplicative signal correction(MSC),first derivative and Savitzky-Golay filter,Red Peony Root powder contents were quantified using PLS algorithm in the spectral ranges of 5 900-5 950 cm-1,6 700-6 750 cm-1 and 6 950-7 100 cm-1.The correlation coefficient of the calibration model was 0.999 0.The RMSEC,RMSEP and RMSECV were 1.14,1.16 and 1.26,respectively.CONCLUSION It was demonstrated that a miniature near-infrared analyzer could be used to monitor the contents of the constituents and the blending homogeneity of traditional Chinese medicinal powder in real time,and to rapidly determine the end-point of blending process.In addition,it can be used to judge whether the physical state of powder mixture conforms to the standard.Therefore,NIR spectroscopy is considered to be an appropriate PAT tool for end-point control of blending process of traditional Chinese medicinal powder.
A Feasibility Study on the Non-Invasive Analysis of Bottled Compound E Jiao Oral Liquid Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for the quantitative analysis of Compound E Jiao oral liquid, a popular oral TCM preparation, through intact glass vials. Transmission spectra were acquired with a sample holder tailored to the instrument's sample compartment. Total flavonoids, total saponins and soluble solid contents were considered as quality indicators of this oral preparation and calibration models were built using partial least-squares regression (PLSR) algorithm. The sample set was comprised of production samples as well as laboratory samples prepared by a concentrating-diluting method so as to extend the concentration range beyond the production variation. The developed models gave root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.084 mg mL(-1) for total flavonoids, 0.014 mg mL(-1) for total saponins and 0.21% for soluble solid contents. To better evaluate the prediction performance, an independent set of ten production samples was introduced for the external validation. The models are compared with those built with the transflectance spectra collected in the destructive way. The results of paired t-test and F-test at a significance level of 0.05 revealed that the two sets of models exhibited comparable model performance. The overall results demonstrate that the proposed non-destructive method can be used as an advantageous alternative in the quality inspection of Compound E Jiao oral liquid production. Abstract:Presented work explores the potential of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) as a rapid, non-destructive analytical method for predicting moisture content in intact Gayo coffee beans. The moisture content is an essential parameter affecting the quality, processing, and shelf life of coffee beans. While conventional moisture determination techniques involve invasive procedures and considerable time, NIRS emanates as an innovative technique offering non-invasive, swift analysis. Using a robust representative selection of Gayo coffee bean samples, we acquired numerous spectra and employed multivariate analysis to construct a calibration model correlating the spectral data with reference moisture values. The initial results exhibit a high correlation coefficient (r) of 0.93 and ratio prediction to deviation (RPD) index of 3, suggesting that the NIRS technique can effectively predict the moisture content within the beans. This research underpins the potential usage of NIRS which, if validated through further testing, could transform quality control operations in the coffee industry by offering a real-time, non-destructive approach for moisture content determination.
Simplifying Wheat Quality Assessment: Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Analysis of Variance Simultaneous Component Analysis to Study Regional and Annual Effects

Abstract:Assessing the quality of wheat, one of humanity's most important crops, in a straightforward manner, is essential. In this study, analysis of variance (ANOVA) simultaneous component analysis (ASCA) paired with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used as an easy-to-implement and environmentally friendly tool for this purpose. The capabilities of combining NIRS with ASCA were demonstrated by studying the effects of sampling site and year on the quality of 180 Austrian wheat samples across four sites over three years. It was found that the year, sample site, and their combination significantly (p < 0.001) affect the NIR spectra of wheat. NIR spectral pre-processing tools, usually employed in chemometric workflows, notably influence the results obtained by ASCA, particularly in terms of the variance attributed to annual and regional effects. The influence of the year was identified as the dominant factor, followed by region and the combined effect of year and sampling site. Interpretation of the loading plots obtained by ASCA demonstrates that wheat components such as proteins, carbohydrates, moisture, or fat contribute to annual and regional differences. Additionally, the protein, starch, moisture, fat, fiber, and ash content of wheat samples obtained using a NIR-based calibration were found to be significantly influenced by year, sampling site, or their combination using ANOVA. This study shows that the combination of ASCA with NIRS simplifies NIR-based quality assessment of wheat without the need for time- and chemical-consuming calibration development.

Abstract:The application of Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for analyzing wet feed directly on farms is increasingly recognized for its role in supporting harvest-time decisions and refining the precision of animal feeding practices. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of NIR spectroscopy calibrations for both undried, unprocessed samples and dried, ground samples. Additionally, it investigates the influence of the bases of reference data (wet vs. dry basis) on the predictive capabilities of the NIR analysis. The study utilized 492 Corn Whole Plant (CWP) and 405 High Moisture Corn (HMC) samples, sourced from various farms across Italy. Spectral data were acquired from both undried, unground and dried, ground samples using laboratory bench NIR instruments, covering a spectral range of 1100 to 2498 nm. The reference chemical composition of these samples was analyzed and presented in two formats: on a wet matter basis and on a dry matter basis. The study revealed that calibrations based on undried samples generally exhibited lower predictive accuracy for most traits, with the exception of Dry Matter (DM). Notably, the decline in predictive performance was more pronounced in highly moist products like CWP, where the average error increased by 60–70%. Conversely, this reduction in accuracy was relatively contained (10–15%) in drier samples such as HMC. The Standard Error of Cross-Validation (SECV) values for DMres, Ash, CP, and EE were notably low, at 0.39, 0.30, 0.29, 0.21% for CWP and 0.49, 0.14, 0.25, 0.14% for HMC, respectively. These results align with previous studies, indicating the reliability of NIR spectroscopy in diverse moisture contexts. The study attributes this variance to the interference caused by water in 'as is' samples, where the spectral features predominantly reflect water content, thereby obscuring the spectral signatures of other nutrients. In terms of calibration development strategies, the study concludes that there is no significant difference in predictive performance between undried calibrations based on either 'dry matter' or 'as is' basis. This finding emphasizes the potential of NIR spectroscopy in diverse moisture contexts, although with varying degrees of accuracy contingent upon the moisture content of the analyzed samples. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the calibration strategies of NIR spectroscopy and its practical applications in agricultural settings, particularly for on-farm forage analysis.

Abstract:The following investigations describe the potential of handheld NIR spectroscopy and Raman imaging measurements for the identification and authentication of food products. On the one hand, during the last decade, handheld NIR spectroscopy has made the greatest progress among vibrational spectroscopic methods in terms of miniaturization and price/performance ratio, and on the other hand, the Raman spectroscopic imaging method can achieve the best lateral resolution when examining the heterogeneous composition of samples. The utilization of both methods is further enhanced via the combination with chemometric evaluation methods with respect to the detection, identification, and discrimination of illegal counterfeiting of food products. To demonstrate the solution to practical problems with these two spectroscopic techniques, the results of our recent investigations obtained for various industrial processes and customer-relevant product examples have been discussed in this article. Specifically, the monitoring of food extraction processes (e.g., ethanol extraction of clove and water extraction of wolfberry) and the identification of food quality (e.g., differentiation of cocoa nibs and cocoa beans) via handheld NIR spectroscopy, and the detection and quantification of adulterations in powdered dairy products via Raman imaging were outlined in some detail. Although the present work only demonstrates exemplary product and process examples, the applications provide a balanced overview of materials with different physical properties and manufacturing processes in order to be able to derive modified applications for other products or production processes.

Abstract:Depending on the uniformity of the quality attribute within agricultural products, there is often a need to develop non-destructive and efficient evaluation methods to assure their qualities. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a well-suited method to characterize organic compounds, particularly when coupled with multivariate analysis methods. This review article introduces scientific and technical reports using the NIRS to evaluate food, agriculture, and forest products. Overall, basic spectroscopic research is continuously progressing; indeed, in combination with big-data information technology and spectral imaging techniques, material analysis is improving to maximize performance. Portable and low-cost devices have also been designed and produced, enabling remote analysis. Future advancements are expected to result in its applications in even more fields for online or at-line quality monitoring.

Abstract:The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of agricultural products has often been carried out using traditional, i.e., destructive, techniques. Due to their inherent disadvantages, non-destructive methods that use near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) coupled with chemometrics could be useful for evaluating various agricultural products. Advancements in computational power, machine learning, regression models, artificial neural networks (ANN), and other predictive tools have made their way into NIRS, improving its potential to be a feasible alternative to destructive measurements. Moreover, the incorporation of suitable preprocessing techniques and wavelength selection methods has arguably proven its practical feasibility. This review focuses on the various computation methods used for processing the spectral data collected and discusses the potential applications of NIRS for evaluating the quality and safety of agricultural products. The challenges associated with this technology are also discussed, as well as potential future perspectives. We conclude that NIRS is a potentially useful tool for the rapid assessment of the quality and safety of agricultural products.

Abstract:Presented manuscript described data analysis on near infrared spectroscopy used as adopted and portable technology for cocoa farmers in Aceh Province, Indonesia. The near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) assisted farmers in post-harvest handling especially for cocoa quality evaluation. This technology was used to determine moisture content (MC) and fat content (FC) of intact cocoa bean samples rapidly and simultaneously. Near infrared spectra data were acquired as absorbance spectrum in wavelength range from 1000 to 2500 nm with co-added of 32 scans for a total of 72 intact bulk cocoa bean samples. Spectra data can be used to predict MC and FC of intact cocoa beans by establishing prediction models and validate with actual MC and FC measured by means of standard laboratory procedures. Prediction performances were evaluated using several statistical indicators: coefficient correlation (r), coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and residual predictive deviation (RPD) index. Near infrared spectra data can be enhanced using spectra pre-treatment methods to improve prediction performances. Moreover, prediction models can be developed using principal component regression (PCR), partial least square regression (PLSR) and other regression approaches. Ideal prediction models should have r and R2 above 0.75, RPD index above 2.0 and RMSE lower than its standard deviation (SD). Dataset were available as raw MS Excel format and The Unscrambler files as *.unsb extension.
Determination of soybean routine quality parameters using near-infrared spectroscopy

Abstract:Large differences in quality existed between soybean samples. In order to rapidly detect soybean quality between samples from different areas, we have developed near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) models for the moisture, crude fat, and protein content of soybeans, based on 360 soybean samples collected from different areas. Compared with whole kernels, soybean powder with particle sizes of 60 mesh was more suitable for modeling of moisture, crude fat, and protein content. To increase the reproducibility of the prediction model, uniform particle sizes of soybeans were prepared by grinding and sieving soybeans with different sizes and colors. Modeling analysis showed that the internal cross-validation correlation coefficients (Rcv) for the moisture, crude fat, and protein content of soybeans were .965, .941, and .949, respectively, and the determination coefficients (R2) were .966, .958, and .958. NIRS performed well as a rapid method for the determination of routine quality parameters and provided reference data for the analysis of soybean quality using FT-NIRS.
Application of visible/near infrared spectroscopy to quality control of fresh fruits and vegetables in large-scale mass distribution channels: a preliminary test on carrots and tomatoes

Abstract:Background: The market for fruits and vegetables is mainly controlled by the mass distribution channel (MDC). MDC buyers do not have useful instruments to rapidly evaluate the quality of the products. Decisions by the buyers are driven primarily by pricing strategies rather than product quality. Simple, rapid and easy-to-use methods for objectively evaluating the quality of postharvest products are needed. The present study aimed to use visible and near-infrared (vis/NIR) spectroscopy to estimate some qualitative parameters of two low-price products (carrots and tomatoes) of various brands, as well as evaluate the applicability of this technique for use in stores. Results: A non-destructive optical system (vis/NIR spectrophotometer with a reflection probe, spectral range 450-1650 nm) was tested. The differences in quality among carrots and tomatoes purchased from 13 stores on various dates were examined. The reference quality parameters (firmness, water content, soluble solids content, pH and colour) were correlated with the spectral readings. The models derived from the optical data gave positive results, in particular for the prediction of the soluble solids content and the colour, with better results for tomatoes than for carrots. Conclusion: The application of optical techniques may help MDC buyers to monitor the quality of postharvest products, leading to an effective optimization of the entire supply chain. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.
