Abstract:The modified polyetheretherketone composites were prepared by filling with graphite and PTFE and reinforced with carbon fiber. The tribological behavior of the modified polyetheretherketone composite in sliding against the stainless steel under the water lubrication was investigated under a wide range of load. The profiles of worn surfaces and wear debris were observed with a scanning electron microscope. It was found that an increase in the testing load resulted in the slow and steady rise of the wear rate and the decrease of the friction coefficient at the beginning. However, when the testing load exceeded 700 N, the wear rate rose drastically and the friction coefficient also rose. The modified PEEK composite was characterized by fatigue wear at a relatively small load and by serious micro-cutting and plastic deformation at a heavier load.

Abstract:Multiscale carbon‐based hybrids were obtained by decorating either GO or CNTs on the surface of short carbon fibers (SCF) via facile layer‐by‐layer self‐assembly process. Hybridization of PTFE fibers and multiscale SCF hybrids was employed to improve the tribological properties of PPS‐based composites. Results showed that the presence of multiscale SCF hybrids can significantly enhance the compatibility between host matrix and fillers. SEM observations revealed that the construction of interlocking network structure that formed by PTFE fiber and multiscale SCF hybrids was likely the contributing factor, which led to better tribological properties of resulting composites. PPS/PTFE/SCF@GO20 composite exhibited the best tribological performance with a friction coefficient of 0.165 and specific wear rate of 3.12×10−5 mm3/Nm, which was about 73.6% and 99.6% lower than that of pure PPS, respectively.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Hybrid fabric/polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composites filled with the particulates of PPS were prepared by dip coating the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (Kevlar) hybrid fabric in a PPS suspension solution containing the particulates to be incorporated. The friction coefficient and wear rate of the hybrid fabric/PPS composites were evaluated on a MPX-2000A friction and wear tester with an end-face contact mode in a dry sliding condition. The results showed the hybrid PTFE/Kevlar fabric composites filled with 40 wt% PPS had the best tribological behavior. The friction coefficient and wear rate decreased with an increase in sliding speed, and they reached the lowest value when the load was 1000 N. The Rockwell hardness affected the wear rate to some degree. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs revealed that even, smooth, and coherent transfer films, formed on the counterface, played an important role in the friction process. They were effective in improving the tribological properties. The surface appearances and cross sections of the hybrid fabric composites were examined through SEM. They showed that the PPS held the hybrid fabric together and adhered it to the wear tester surface, accounting for the improvement of the tribological properties of the hybrid fabric/PPS composites.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the tribological characteristics of commercially available high-strength polyphthalamide-based composites with great contents (30-50 wt.%) of both carbon and glass fibers in point and linear contacts against metal and ceramic counterfaces under dry friction and oil-lubricated conditions at various loads and sliding speeds. The lengths of both types of fibers were varied simultaneously with their contents while samples were fabricated from granules by injection molding. When loading PPA with 30 wt.% SCFs at an aspect ratio (AR) of 200, the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus increased up to 142.7 ± 12.5 MPa and 12.9 ± 0.6 GPa, respectively. In the composites with the higher contents of reinforcing fibers PPA/40CCF and AR~1000, the ultimate tensile strength and the elastic modulus were 240 ± 3 MPa and 33.7 ± 1.9 GPa, respectively. Under the applied test conditions, a composite reinforced with 40 wt.% carbon fibers up to 100 μm long at an aspect ratio of ~1000 possessed the best both mechanical properties and tribological characteristics. One of the reasons that should be considered for improving the tribological characteristics of the composite is the fatigue wear mechanism, which is facilitated by the high filling degree, the strong interfacial adhesion, and the great aspect ratio for fibers. Under the oil-lubricated conditions, both friction coefficients and wear rates decreased, so such friction units could be implemented whenever possible. The reported data can be used as practical recommendations for applying fibrous polyphthalamide-based composites as friction unit components.

Abstract:Carbon fabric reinforced polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites with different PTFE content, viz. 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 vol%, were fabricated by a dispersion impregnation technique followed by a hot-press process. The composites were evaluated for their mechanical and tribological properties. The tribological tests were conducted on a friction and wear tester with a ring-on-block arrangement. The mechanical properties were also tested and their relationship with tribological properties was analyzed. The worn surface and wear debris were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study the wear mechanism. It was found that the resin content had a great influence on both the mechanical properties and the tribological properties, and the tribological properties were correlated with the mechanical properties. The composite with 50 vol% PTFE showed promising tribological behaviors under the selected test conditions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) lamellar materials have unique molecular structures and mechanical properties, among which molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with different interaction forces served as reinforcing phase for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites in the present study. Thermal stability, tribological and thermomechanical properties of composites were comprehensively investigated. It was demonstrated that g-C3N4 improved elastic deformation resistance and thermal degradation characteristics. The addition of g-C3N4 significantly enhanced anti-wear performance under different loads and speeds. The results indicated that PTFE composites reinforced by g-C3N4 were provided with better properties because the bonding strength of g-C3N4 derived from hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) was stronger than that of MoS2 with van der Waals force. Consequently, g-C3N4 exhibited better thermomechanical and tribological properties. The result of this work is expected to provide a new kind of functional filler for enhancing the tribological properties of polymer composites.

Abstract:Double‐fiber hybrid structure between a hard CF and a soft PFP fiber could tightly entrap the CF by fibril entanglement. In this study, carbon fiber (CF) filled polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composites are lubricated with perfluoropolymer (PFP) fiber by melt‐blending. The effect of double fibers (CF‐PFP fibers) on the tribological properties of PPS composites has been carefully investigated and correlated under various sliding conditions. The results indicated that the tribological performance of PPS composites with double fibers is better than that of the composites with a single fiber, especially under severe conditions. Mechanism exploration suggests that a double‐fiber hybrid structure between a hard CF and a soft PFP fiber could tightly entrap the CF by fibril entanglement, thus preventing the CF from being stripped out of the matrix under the steel ring shearing force. Under optimized conditions, the average friction coefficient of composites with PFP fiber is only about 0.1 at 300 N load under 200 rpm, even lower than half of the average friction coefficient of the composites with PTFE powder under the same condition. Notably, compared to commercial split PFP fibers, the in‐situ formed PFP fibers with more uniform distribution significantly improve the tribological properties. This work open up a novel perspective for improving the tribological performance of composites by systematically regulating the microstructure of self‐lubricating fibrous additives. Highlights PFA is subject to in‐situ fibrillation during melt blending. Fibrous PFP effectively improves the tribological properties of PPS/CF composites. The in‐situ formed PFP fiber contributes to better tribological properties. The double‐fiber hybrid structure prevents the CF from being sheared out. The number of processing cycles affects the tribological properties.

Abstract:Polyaryl ether sulfone/polymethylphenlsiloxane (PES/PMPS) microcapsules were prepared and added to a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/aramid fiber composite liner for the first time to improve the tribological properties of self-lubricating fiber liners under high-temperature environments. Compared with the virgin liner, the friction coefficient and wear rate of the liner containing 9 wt% PES/PMPS microcapsules are reduced by 48.5% and 21.6%, respectively. At the microscopic and atomic scale, lubricant PMPS changes the interaction energy between PTFE and the Fe layer to weaken the adhesion of PTFE to the friction couple, further reducing the adhesive wear of the liner. Under the action of lubricating phases PMPS and PTFE, the tribological properties of the liner are significantly improved.

Abstract:The application of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been confined to packaging applications due to its inadequate mechanical and tribological characteristics. We propose enhancing LDPE by integrating hard carbon spheres (CSs) to improve its strength, frictional characteristics, and wear resistance. LDPE/CS composites were created by blending LDPE with varying CS amounts (0.5–8 wt.%). Analysis using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirmed CS presence in the LDPE matrix, with X-ray diffraction showing no microstructural changes post-blending. Thermal characterization exhibited notable improvements in thermal stability (~4%) and crystallinity (~7%). Mechanical properties such as hardness and Young's modulus were improved by up to 4% and 24%, respectively. Tribological studies on different composite samples with varying surface roughness under various load and speed conditions revealed the critical role of surface roughness in reducing friction by decreasing real contact area and adhesive interactions between asperities. Increased load and speed amplified shear stress on asperities, possibly leading to deformation and failure. Notably, integrating CSs into LDPE, starting at 1 wt.%, effectively reduced friction and wear. The composite with the highest loading (8 wt.%) displayed the most significant tribological enhancement, achieving a remarkable 75% friction reduction and a substantial 78% wear reduction.

Abstract:This study presents a direct electrochemical modification technique for incorporating two specific small molecules, phenol, and aniline into carbon fibre (CF) surface. These molecules have a strong hydrogen bonding for polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) and are intended to improve the friction and wear properties of PPS/CF composites. The tribological properties of PPS/CF composites were evaluated using a pin-on-disc. To get a more thorough comprehension of the working conditions of PPS/CF composites, a comparative examination of the composites' tribological characteristics was carried out by modifying the nature of the opposing surface while keeping the sliding speed of the applied force consistent. The results showed that the addition of 10 mM phenol to carbon fibre results in a significant reduction in the coefficient of friction (COF) compared to carbon fibre treated with 50 mM phenol and 6 mM aniline when in contact with a steel counter-face. When sliding against a polymer counter-face, the composites experienced a reduction in the COF due to the formation of a transfer film rich in PPS. Introducing aniline groups to the fibre surface reduced the wear rate by 57.5% to 46% with applied forces of 25 N compared to PPS and unmodified PPS/CF when sliding against the polymer counter-face. This study thoroughly discusses the synergistic process of chemical modification on the tribological performance of PPS/CF. It also analyses the surface microstructures of the worn surfaces of the composites. This study has the potential to provide new insights into the design and development of CF/polymer composites with enhanced friction and wear properties.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to develop a design methodology for the UltraHigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)-based composites used in friction units. To achieve this, stress–strain analysis was done using computer simulation of the triboloading processes. In addition, the effects of carbon fiber size used as reinforcing fillers on formation of the subsurface layer structures at the tribological contacts as well as composite wear resistance were evaluated. A structural analysis of the friction surfaces and the subsurface layers of UHMWPE as well as the UHMWPE-based composites loaded with the carbon fibers of various (nano-, micro-, millimeter) sizes in a wide range of tribological loading conditions was performed. It was shown that, under the “moderate” tribological loading conditions (60 N, 0.3 m/s), the carbon nanofibers (with a loading degree up to 0.5 wt.%) were the most efficient filler. The latter acted as a solid lubricant. As a result, wear resistance increased by 2.7 times. Under the “heavy” test conditions (140 N, 0.5 m/s), the chopped carbon fibers with a length of 2 mm and the optimal loading degree of 10 wt.% were more efficient. The mechanism is underlined by perceiving the action of compressive and shear loads from the counterpart and protecting the tribological contact surface from intense wear. In doing so, wear resistance had doubled, and other mechanical properties had also improved. It was found that simultaneous loading of UHMWPE with Carbon Nano Fibers (CNF) as a solid lubricant and Long Carbon Fibers (LCF) as reinforcing carbon fibers, provided the prescribed mechanical and tribological properties in the entire investigated range of the “load–sliding speed” conditions of tribological loading.

Abstract:This study proposes preparing a composite material of h‐BN/SCFs/PTFE by mixing molded PTFE powder (7AX) with its homologous micropowder containing polar groups (MP1100). A 78.4% drop in wear rate was measured for 24 wt% MP1100. Such decrease in wear rate is explained based on changes in composite molecular structure, a transfer film, and the formation of chemically reacted polar group compounds on the steel disc. A method of improving the tribological properties of hexagonal boron nitride/short carbon fibers/polytetrafluoroethylene (h‐BN/SCFs/PTFE) composites by adding homologous micropowder (MP1100) with polar groups is proposed in this study. Composites of h‐BN/SCFs/PTFE with MP1100 at 0, 8, 16, 24, and 32 wt% were prepared. The pin‐on‐disc device was used to evaluate the friction properties of composites, and wear mechanisms against duplex stainless steel was examined. The experimental results show that MP1100 micropowder improves composite mechanical properties, friction coefficient, and wear resistance of composites. A 78.4% drop in wear rate was measured for 24 wt% MP1100. Such decrease in wear rate is explained based on changes in composite molecular structure, a transfer film formed by the absorption of debris, and the formation of chemically reacted polar group compounds on the steel disc.

Abstract:A novel high temperature composite based on Poly (phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) adding solid lubricants and shot pitch-based carbon fibers are prepared in this paper. Influence of experimental parameters such as load. sliding distance and CF content on the friction and wear property of composites are discussed; the wear mechanism of PPESK and composites are investigated by using SEM. The results show that the addition of CF is effective to improve the tribological property of PPESK. When CF content is 10%, the friction coefficient of composite is equal to that of PTFE, but the specific wear rate is much lower than that of PTFE; and the tribological properties is better than that of neat PPESK. The wear mechanism of PPESK mainly includes abrasive wear and adhesive wear, but that of composite predominately is adhesive wear.

Abstract:Performances of polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN)/carbon fiber (CF)/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composites: the good thermal properties (Tg: 172.5°C, Td5%: 488.6°C, and Tmax: 514.2°C); stable dielectric frequency dependence and low water absorption (0.21%); the excellent specific wear rate is 5.7 × 10−7 mm3/N m. The synergistic effects of carbon fiber (CF) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) on the friction and wear behavior of polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) under dry lubrication condition were studied. According to the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the composites' surface after wear, the wear mechanism of the composites under dry sliding condition was analyzed. The research results show that the addition of solid lubricants PTFE and carbon fibers to PEN helps to enhance the properties of friction and wear. The specific wear rate is decreased to 5.7 × 10−7 mm3/N m at a PTFE composition of 5 wt%, which is optimized by 33.4% more than PEN/CF composites. In addition, wear mechanisms are mainly abrasive wear, accompanied by adhesive wear and plowing of the friction ring.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites are widely used as tribo‐materials in aerospace and automotive industry. To amplify the industrial utilization of extrusion‐based additive manufacturing fused deposition modeling (FDM) in fabricating CF/PEEK tribo‐composites, the composites' microstructure‐property relationship was studied with respect to carbon fiber content varied between 5 wt% and 30 wt%. It was revealed the incorporation of carbon fibers helped enhance the mechanical strength of PEEK greatly with an optimal content of 5 wt%, at which the composite material exhibited the highest crystallinity as well as the best mechanical performance. Tribological tests indicated that CF/PEEK composites were more suitable for high speed and heavy load conditions especially for 20 wt% CF/PEEK, which was associated with the establishment of high quality transfer films covered on counter steel surfaces. Abstract:The changing process of friction interface and the forming process of EPGs transfer film. The aim of this study is to prepare epoxy/polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/glass fiber (GF) composites (EPGs) with the unique characteristics of low friction and high wear resistance based on triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC). The tribological properties of composites with different filler ratios under different working conditions were systematically studied. At the maximum filler content of 40 wt% PTFE, the minimum coefficient of friction (COF) and wear rate reached 0.079 and 0.45 × 10−6 mm3/N·m. The hardness decreased by 44.2% and the density increased by 18.3%. The worn surfaces and transfer films were observed and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The increasing tendency of velocity and amplitude is beneficial to reduce the carbon‐rich region and further enhance the formation of transfer films. It is proved that the tribological properties of TGIC‐based epoxy composites are higher than those of other types of epoxy composites. This study offers great insight into the tribological applications of TGIC‐based epoxy composites. Highlights Epoxy/PTFE/GF composites (EPGs) were prepared using TGIC as the base material. EPGs have good mechanical and tribological properties. The COF of EPG3 reaches 0.079 and the wear rate becomes 0.45 × 10−6 mm3/(N·m). Abstract:Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/Kevlar fabric composites have been widely used for their good tribological properties in dry friction, especially in the extreme condition. In this study, the tribological properties of PTFE/Kevlar fabric composites under overloading conditions (240–330 MPa) were studied showing the friction coefficient about 0.086 and the wear rate of approximately 0.1 mm/h. A double-layer transfer membrane was formed by tribol tests. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were conducted to reveal the formation and wear mechanism of it. This new investigation of double-layer transfer membrane has significant impact with great potential in a wide range of engineering applications such as heavy loading machinery equipment and aerospace industry.

Abstract:Short-carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetherimide (SCF/PEI) composites have good mechanical properties and are expected to have wide applications including components serving under water lubrication conditions. However, no work has been reported on the tribological behaviors of SCF/PEI composites under water lubrication conditions. This work attempts to explore the practicality of the SCF/PEI composite from a tribological point of view under water lubrication conditions. SCFs are coated by polydopamine (PDA) to enhance the interfacial interaction between fibers and matrix. The tribological performances of SCF/PEI composite are systematically investigated by sliding wear tests under tap and sea water lubrication conditions. Experimental results show that the SCF/PEI composite has a better friction performance in water lubrications than that under dry sliding because of the separation effects formed by a water molecule film and a transfer film. However, no remarkable differences of wear resistance are found between water lubrication and dry contact conditions, and the magnitude of specific wear rate under these conditions is around 1×10-6 mm3/N·m. It is found that contact surface hardness of the SCF/PEI composite is reduced after a sliding test in water due to the plasticization phenomenon, especially sea water can accelerate the diffusion of water molecules into matrix, making the specific wear rate in sea water is ten times of that in tap water for highly-loaded conditions. Meanwhile, the abrasive wear is observed to be the dominated wear mode in boundary lubrication regime, and the adhesion wear occurs around the transition position from the boundary to mixed lubrication regime. It is also found that pressure has a significant effect on the temperature rise within the contact surface than the speed does. Finally, the tribological performance of the SCF/PEI composite under water is exhibited to be better than that of most of polymers and composites reported previously.

Abstract:Various modified carbon fabric (CF)/polytetrafluorothylene (PTFE) composites were prepared by means of CF surface treatment, i.e. air-plasma treatment and HNO3 etching, introduction of nano-TiO2 and combined methods. The composites were evaluated for their tribological behaviors and the worn surfaces were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to understand the mechanism. The water contact angle and the surface topography of the untreated and surface-treated CF were also analyzed. It was found that the surface treatment improved the surface hydrophilicity and changed the surface topography of CF, which contributed to improve the interfacial adhesion of the composites and hence the tribological behaviors. The inclusion of 4wt% nano-TiO2 provided the optimum wear resistance among the nano-TiO2 modified composites. There was a cooperating effect of CF air-plasma treatment and 4wt% nano-TiO2 modification to the wear-reduction of the composites.
