Abstract:Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have been investigated as alternatives to indium tin oxide in transparent conductive films (TCFs) for electronics. However, AgNW TCFs still pose stability issues when exposed to thermal, chemical, and mechanical stimuli. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and effective route to improve stability by treating the films with dilute ferric chloride solution. Our results indicate that after treatment the films exhibit a dramatically enhanced stability against aging, high temperature oxidation, chemical etching, sulfurization, and mechanical straining. Size-dependent instability is fully explored and explained regarding surface atomic diffusion, which could be blocked by enhancing the activation energy of surface diffusion through forming a AgCl cap under ferric chloride solution treatment. Chemisorption-related Fermi level shift of silver nanowires is applied to tune their chemical reactivity to ferric chloride solution for balancing between size-dependent stability improvement and maintaining optoelectrical properties. Owing to the dilute treatment solution, the treated films exhibit a negligible change in light transmittance, whereas sheet resistance decreases by 30% and flexibility increases because of capillary-force-induced welding of contacting AgNWs and AgCl layer mediated tightening. These findings are significant for real-world applications of AgNW TCFs.

Abstract:Abstract Silver nanowires are susceptible to degradation under ultraviolet (UV) light illumination. Encapsulating silver nanowire transparent conductive films (AgNW TCFs) with UV shielding materials usually result in the increasing of the sheet resistance or the decrease of the visible light transparency. Herein, we combine a reducing species (FeSO 4 ) and a thin layer (overcoating) of UV shielding material to solve the stability and the optical performance issues simultaneously. The AgNW TCFs show excellent stability under continuous UV light illumination for 14 h, and their sheet resistance varies only 6%. The dramatic enhancement of the stability against UV light illumination for as-obtained TCFs will make them viable for real-world applications in touch panels and displays.

Abstract:This research addresses challenges with silver nanowires (Ag NWs) as transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) and heaters in commercial devices. Here, zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are first reported as a protective layer for Ag NWs. Multi-physics simulations confirm enhanced thermal stability due to improved heat dissipation, temperature distribution, and thermal conductivity from ZnO. When Ag NWs are surrounded by air, heat transfers mainly through convection and radiation because of air's low conduction coefficient. Encasing Ag NWs in ZnO enhances heat transfer to the ZnO surface, accelerating cooling and dissipating more heat into the atmosphere via convection. The results show composite's efficiency in the Joule effect, maintaining a consistent temperature of 78 °C for 700 s after 500 bending cycles, a significant improvement over Ag NWs operating for only 5 s at 80 °C. Additionally, the composite film exhibited exceptional performance, including a sheet resistance of 9.8 Ω sq-1 and an optical transmittance of 96.96 %, outperforming Ag NWs, which have a sheet resistance of 12 Ω sq-1 and a transmittance of 94.11%. The combination of enhanced electrical, thermal, and mechanical stability, along with impressive optical properties, makes Ag NWs/ZnO NPs a promising candidate for transparent conductive electrode materials in various applications.
Fused Silver Nanowires with Silica Sol Nanoparticles for Smooth, Flexible, Electrically Conductive and Highly Stable Transparent Electrodes

Abstract:Silver nanowires (AgNWs) thin films have emerged as promising next-generation transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs), and increasing the opto-electrical properties and long-term stability of AgNWs based TCEs is now a major research focus. In this work, a smooth, flexible, electrically conductive and highly stable transparent AgNWs-silica nanoparticles composite TCE has been successfully manufactured via coating an aqueous AgNWs-silica sol composite conductive ink on a PET substrate through the Mayer rod method. The effects of particle size and concentration of silica sol on the smoothness, opto-electrical properties and stability of AgNWs based TCEs were investigated in detail, and the mechanisms of the decoration of AgNWs by silica sol nanoparticles and welding of the network junction are discussed briefly. The TCE based on AgNWs reinforced with 50 nm silica nanoparticles (80 ppm concentration of silica sol) possesses a smooth surface with an RMS value of 9.45 nm, and superior opto-electrical properties with a sheet resistance of 28 Ω sq−1 and a transmittance of 97%. The resistance of the resultant AgNWs-silica composite TCE remains nearly constant after bending for 1000 cycles or exposure to Na2S solution for 300 s, indicating high stability. The newly designed AgNWs-silica composite TCE is a promising flexible and transparent electrode to be applied in next-generation flexible electronic devices.
Plasma Cleaning and Self-Limited Welding of Silver Nanowire Films for Flexible Transparent Conductors

Abstract:Silver nanowire (Ag NW) films are the promising next-generation flexible, transparent conductors, but their transport properties are greatly deteriorated by the insulating polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) layer wrapping on the Ag NWs. Herein, we report a plasma treatment strategy to completely remove the PVP layer and meanwhile limitedly weld the Ag NW film at the NW/NW junctions to improve the film's carrier transport properties while not affecting its transparency. Particularly, we found that the dual functions of the removal of the PVP layer and self-limited welding can be achieved for a series of commonly used plasmas, e.g., O2 plasma, H2-Ar plasma (1:9 in volume), and N2 plasma. Theoretical simulations reveal that the self-limited welding is caused by the focusing of light (emitted during plasma generation) at the NW/NW junctions, which thermally activates silver atoms and drives recrystallization therein. With a cleaned surface and welded nature, the plasma-treated Ag NW film shows largely improved conductivity and high flexibility, greatly facilitating its application as a high-performance flexible transparent heater (cycling stability, >40 cycles of heating/cooling; temperature rising rate, 112 °C within 30 s at 8 V). Moreover, the plasma-treated Ag NW can also serve as a basic electrode for a stacked electron-only device of Ag NW film/8-hydroxyquinoline/Ag electrode, improving its current collection efficiency by 5.47 times. Efficient Protection of Silver Nanowire Transparent Electrodes by All-Biorenewable Layer-by-Layer Assembled Thin Films

Abstract:An efficient protection strategy for silver nanowire-based transparent electrodes (AgNW TEs) is developed to enhance their poor adhesion force on substrates and thermal, optical, chemical, and electrical stabilities. Chitin nanofibers (CNFs) and alkali lignin (AL), which possess high mechanical property, a gas/moisture barrier, and UV absorption properties, are successively assembled on AgNW TEs through layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly based on their oppositely charged surfaces. The formation of LBL-assembled CNFs and AL (CNF/AL)10 bilayers, where 10 is the optimized number of bilayers, on the aldehyde-modified AgNW (Al-AgNW) TEs does not deteriorate their electrical conductivity (17.3 ± 2.1 Ω/□) and transmittance (90.1 ± 0.3% at 550 nm), and the (CNF/AL)10 bilayer-coated Al-AgNW [(CNF/AL)10@Al-AgNW] TEs present considerable enhancement in their adhesion force and thermal, optical, chemical, and electrical durability. In detail, their optoelectrical properties are stable over 200 cycles of the scotch peel-off test, for 10 h sonication, up to 350 °C, under UV/O3 treatment for 100 min, in 10% HCl and 28% NH3 for 6 and 12 h, and at an electrical potential up to 14 V, respectively. These features make (CNF/AL)10@Al-AgNW TEs suitable as a durable high-performance transparent heater.
Protecting the Nanoscale Properties of Ag Nanowires with a Solution-Grown SnO2 Monolayer As Corrosion Inhibitor

Abstract:The chemical reactivity and/or the diffusion of Ag atoms or ions during thermal processing can cause irreversible structural damage, hindering the application of Ag nanowires (NWs) in transparent conducting films and other applications that make use of the material’s nanoscale properties. Here, we describe a simple and effective method for growing monolayer SnO2 on the surface of Ag nanowires under ambient conditions, which protects the Ag nanowires from chemical and structural damage. Our results show that Sn2+ and Ag atoms undergo a redox reaction in the presence of water. First-principle simulations suggest a reasonable mechanism for SnO2 formation, showing that the interfacial polarization of the silver by the SnO2 can significantly reduce the affinity of Ag to O2, thereby greatly reducing the oxidation of the silver. The corresponding values (for example, before coating: 17.2 Ω/sq at 86.4%, after coating: 19.0 Ω/sq at 86.6%) show that the deposition of monolayer SnO2 enables the preservation of high transparency and conductivity of Ag. In sharp contrast to the large-scale degradation of pure Ag-NW films including the significant reduction of its electrical conductivity when subjected to a series of harsh corrosion environments, monolayer SnO2 coated Ag-NW films survive structurally and retain their electrical conductivity. Consequently, the thermal, electrical, and chemical stability properties we report here, and the simplicity of the technology used to achieve them, are among the very best reported for transparent conductor materials to date.
Coating-free, air-stable silver nanowires for high-performance transparent conductive film

Abstract:Silver nanowire (Ag NW) based films are considered as a promising alternative for traditional indium tin oxide but still suffer from some limitations, including insufficient conductivity, transparency and environmental instability. We here report a novel etching synthesis strategy to improve the performance of Ag NW films. Different from the traditional methods to synthesize high aspect ratios of NWs or employ electrically conductive coatings, we find it effective to reduce the high-reactivity defects of NWs for optimizing the comprehensive performance of Ag NW films. In this strategy etching can suppress the generation of high-reactivity defects and meanwhile the etching growth of NWs can be accomplished in an uneven ligand distribution environment. The resulting Ag NWs are uniformly straight with a sharp-edged structure. The transparent conductive film obtained exhibits simultaneous improvements in electrical conductivity, transparency and air stability. Even after exposure in air for 200 days and no protective coatings, the film can still meet the highest requirement of practical applications, with a figure of merit 361 (i.e., FoM > 350). These results not only demonstrate the importance of defect control in the synthesis of Ag NWs, but also pave a way for further optimizing the performance of Ag NW-based films.

Durable silver nanowire transparent electrodes enabled by biorenewable nanocoating using chitin and cellulose nanofibers for flexible electronics

Abstract:The protection of silver nanowire (AgNW) networks is crucial for enhancing their durability and applicability to flexible electronics. In this study, we present a sustainable and efficient strategy to protect AgNW-based flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs) using a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of biorenewable chitin and cellulose nanofibers (Chi and Cell). These uniform LBL-assembled thin films were successfully fabricated on AgNW FTEs due to their opposite surface charges. The resulting (Chi/Cell)n bilayers, where n is the number of bilayers, did not degrade the optoelectrical properties of AgNW FTEs and significantly enhanced their stability under various harsh conditions. The optimized (Chi/Cell)10@Al-AgNW FTEs exhibited comprehensive stability against UV/O3 treatment for 40 min, thermal treatment at 250 °C for 350 min, Na2S (1%), HCl (10%), and NH3 (30%) treatments for 3, 30, and 105 min, respectively, sonication for 300 min, and 10 000 cycles of bending test. Therefore, the (Chi/Cell)10@Al-AgNW FTEs were successfully applied to transparent heaters (TH) and pressure sensors with remarkably improved applicability, durability, and performance compared to pristine AgNW FTEs, providing a reassuring solution to the stability issues of AgNW-based FTEs.
Significantly Improved Stability of PDMS- Packaged Silver Nanowire Film under Multiple Environments

Abstract:Silver Nanowire (AgNW) transparent conductive film has been widely studied in recent years as alternative to ITO. In spite of the excellent light transmittance, conductivity and flexibility, the weak stability of AgNW film is a severe barrier to its application in electronic devices. However, transparent electrode is packaged when applied in electronic devices. In this work, the effects of package on the stability of AgNW film under multiple environments are tested. We demonstrate that the stability of AgNW film is significantly improved after packaged by PDMS in ambient atmosphere. After annealing at 180 °C for 50 h, the sheet resistance of PDMS-packaged AgNW film increased by 47%, compared to 1100% of pure AgNW film. In harsh environment of high humidity and high temperature, PDMS-packaged AgNW film also performs outstanding stability. When exposed to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, the pure AgNW film lost conductivity in 40 min, accompanied with the sharp decrease of light transmittance. By contrast, the sheet resistance of PDMS-packaged AgNW film only changed about 20% with nearly unchanged light transmittance. Even at high current density of 250 mA cm -2 , the PDMS-packaged AgNW film exhibited a lifetime 5.8 times that of pure AgNW film. The protective effect of package will promote the application of AgNW film in optoelectronic devices.
The Mechanical and Electrochemical Stability of Trimethysilane Plasma Nanocoatings Deposited onto Cobalt Chromium Cardiovascular Stents

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the coating integrity performance and corrosion protection property of trimethylsilane (TMS) plasma nanocoatings that were directly deposited onto cobalt chromium (CoCr) L605 cardiovascular stents. Hydrophilic surfaces were achieved for the TMS plasma nanocoatings that were deposited onto the coronary stents through NH3/O2 (2:1 molar ratio) plasma post-treatment. With a coating thickness of approximately 20-25 nm, the TMS plasma nanocoatings were highly durable and able to resist delamination and cracking from crimping and expansion by a Model CX with a J-Crimp Station. The stent surface that was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) showed no indications of pitting, corrosion, or adsorption products on either the luminal or abluminal surfaces of the stents, in contrast to the uncoated stent surface. The TMS plasma nanocoatings significantly enhanced the stent's corrosion resistance in immersion experiments that followed the ASTM F2129-15 corrosion protocol, evident in the increase of the open circuit potential (OCP) from 0.01 V for the uncoated L605 stent to 0.18 V for the plasma-nanocoated L605 stent, reducing potential cytotoxic metal ion release. Cyclic polarization (CP) curves show that the corrosion rate (density level) observed in plasma-nanocoated L605 stents was approximately half an order of magnitude lower than that of the uncoated stents, indicating improved corrosion protection of the stents. CP curves of the TMS plasma-nanocoated stents with different coating thicknesses show that, in the range of 20-65 nm, the coating thickness does not result in any difference in the corrosion resistance of the stents.
Annealing-Free and Strongly Adhesive Silver Nanowire Networks with Long-Term Reliability by Introduction of A Nonconductive and Biocompatible Polymer Binder

Abstract:As a promising candidate to replace the brittle and expensive transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) conductor, the use of silver nanowire (AgNW) networks still involves issues such as high-temperature post-treatments and poor substrate adhesion for industrial application. Here a room-temperature soldering and one-step solution method is developed to achieve high-performance Ag nanowire transparent conductive films (TCFs). A nonconductive binder is prepared from poly(dopamine) and alginic acid which contains abundant catechol and carboxylic acid functional groups. The drying of the binder on the Ag nanowire percolation networks induces tighter contact among the nanowires and strong adhesion to the substrate, simultaneously enhancing the electrical and mechanical properties without a high-temperature annealing process. As a result, a highly conductive and bendable AgNW film is demonstrated on a low-cost polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) substrate, showing an 89% optical transmittance at λ = 550 nm and a sheet resistance of 16.3 Ohm sq(-1). Its optical and electrical performances are superior to those obtained from the reported indium tin oxide (ITO) films. Moreover, the AgNW film exhibits strong adhesion to the substrate, maintaining its conductivity after 100 tape tests, and it still resists the tape test even after exposure to solvent for several hours. Most importantly, the film shows good reliability during long-term 85 °C/85% RH (relative humidity) aging, which has been rarely investigated although it is a critical requirement for industrial application. The advanced and wide-ranging features of the prepared AgNW film greatly contribute to its use as a transparent electrode in multifunctional flexible electronic devices.
Surfactant-free synthesis of ultralong silver nanowires for durable transparent conducting electrodes

Abstract:The present study employed the surfactant-free growth of ultra-long (similar to 50 mu m) silver nanowires (AgNWs) with a high aspect ratio (more than 1000) by galvanic replacement. AgNW conducting films were fabricated as electrodes using drop-casting. The AgNW film had 90% transmittance to 550 nm light with a sheet resistance of 232 Omega sq(-1). Further, the flexibility test of the transparent flexible AgNW/MoS2 device array indicated that the variation of the current was within 5% when a strain of 0.5% was applied to the device; additionally, the device showed a 13% decrease in current after experiencing 50 000 bending cycles. This study indicated that the ultralong AgNWs synthesized using galvanic replacement have potential for applications as transparent and flexible electrodes.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) stabilized by a thermoresponsive polymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), have been synthesized by the reduction of silver ions with NaBH4 in aqueous solutions. The obtained Ag NPs are very stable at room temperature due to the extended coil conformation of the PNIPAM chain at temperatures below its volume phase transition temperature (similar to 32 degrees C). At higher temperatures (such as 45 degrees C) above the phase transition of PNIPAM, only minute aggregation between Ag NPs was observed, showing that the collapsed PNIPAM chains still retain the ability to stabilize Ag NPs. The PNIPAM-stabilized Ag NPs were then characterized as a function of the thermal phase transition of PNIPAM by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and cyclic voltammeter. Consistent results were obtained showing that the phase transition of PNIPAM has some effect on the optical properties of Ag NPs. Switchable electrochemical response of the PNIPAM-stabilized Ag NPs triggered by temperature change was observed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
High performance silver nanowire based transparent electrodes reinforced by conductive polymer adhesive

Abstract:Transparent conducting electrodes (TCEs) are an essential component for modern opto-electronic devices such as solar cells, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and touch screen panels. However, traditional indium tin oxide (ITO) cannot meet the demand for the next generation highly flexible TCEs, and thus many novel alternative materials and technologies are blooming, such as super-aligned carbon nanotube, graphenes, conducting polymer and metal nanowire and so on. Among them, silver nanowires (Ag NWs) have been considered as one of the most promising technologies for TCEs, featured with superior electrical and optical properties. However, there are still two major challenges for Ag NWs-based TCEs technology to overcome. One is the poor mechanical interconnection between the Ag NWs conducting networks and transparent substrate, the other is the high contact resistance of the junctions among Ag NWs. Here we report a novel two-step electrostatic spraying process to fabricate Ag NWs TCEs composite with selectively coated conductive polymer, i.e. poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene: polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). Additionally, we applied plasma treatment to the materials between two-step electrostatic spraying process, which rendered sintering of junctions between the Ag NWs at room temperature, and thus increasing the conductivity of the TCEs by at least three orders of magnitude. Results showed that by adjusting the electrostatic spraying process parameters, selective deposition can be achieved, i.e. the conductive polymer could tightly bound to the Ag NWs network. As compared to an even distribution of the coating layer in the whole area, selective coating rendered the negligible loss of transmittance (0.2% at most) and excellent adhesion to the substrate. Moreover, the composited TCEs exhibited 85.3% mean optical transmittance and 35.8 Omega/sq sheet resistance. Based on our results, we believe that this technology can be used for roll-to-roll preparation of silver nanowires (Ag NWs)-based TCEs.

Abstract:As a key component in flexible optoelectronic devices, flexible transparent conductive films will become a strategic material in optoelectronic products. Among them, silver nanowire (AgNW) transparent conductive film (TCF) is the most marketable and promising optoelectronic material. However, the nano-size effect makes AgNW TCF less weather-resistant and prone to corrosion in the service occasions, leading to degradation or even failure of the conductivity of optoelectronic devices. Therefore, poor stability is one of the key issues hindering the large-scale industrialization of AgNW TCF. This article focuses on the application scenarios and stability of AgNW TCF: firstly, its related application scenarios in flexible displays, thin-film solar cells, and electromagnetic shielding glass are summarized; then the impact of service environment (environmental pollutants, temperature, humidity, lighting, etc.), mechanical effects, thermoelectric coupling effects on the stability of AgNW TCF are discussed; finally, the optimizing strategies are put forward about how to improve the stability of AgNW TCF. It provides a reference for researchers to improve the stability of AgNW TCF.

Overcoming Temperature‐Induced Degradation of Silver Nanowire Electrodes by an Ag@SnO x Core‐Shell Approach

Abstract:Transparent electrodes consisting of silver nanowires (Ag NWs) are a solution‐processed alternative to commonly used indium tin oxide electrodes. Here, Ag NW electrodes protected by a tin oxide (SnOx) are explored and unprecedented thermal stability is found. While unprotected Ag NW electrodes fail at 250 °C, the SnOx Ag NW electrodes remain stable for 40 h at 250 °C and withstand high temperatures up to 500 °C for short times. First, an optimized method of synthesis that provides uniform Ag NWs with high reproducibility is used. Afterward, a SnOx shell is formed in a wet chemical reaction. Fabrication of highly conductive electrodes requires thermal annealing at 300 °C for 5 min under ambient atmosphere. Electrodes with a sheet resistance as low as 20 Ω sq‐1 and visible transmittance of 84% are demonstrated. It is shown that a ≈2 nm thick SnOx shell effectively protects the Ag NWs in a temperature range between 200 and 500 °C, whereas unprotected Ag NWs suddenly fail at temperatures beyond 200 °C. It is strongly anticipated that these improvements in the stability of Ag NWs open a large field of further investigations and applications. Silver nanowire electrodes protected by a tin oxide shell exhibit unprecedented thermal stability. The ≈2 nm SnOx shell effectively protects the silver nanowires (Ag NWs) at temperature ranges from 200 to 500 °C, whereas unprotected Ag NWs suddenly fail at temperatures beyond 200 °C.

Abstract:Background Multimodal recovery programmes decrease hospital stay. The objective of this systematic review was to assess how single-modality evidence-based care principles, regarding postoperative analgesia and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) prophylaxis, combine to achieve this. Methods A systematic review of randomised controlled trials was performed. Relevant trials compared postoperative epidural analgesia/parenteral opioid analgesia/paracetamol/non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and postoperative antiemetics. The effect on recovery was evaluated in terms of length of hospital stay, pain intensity, duration of gastrointestinal dysfunction and incidence of PONV. Results Twenty-three trials were included. Epidural anaesthesia failed to reduce length of stay or the incidence of PONV when compared to controls. Pain intensity and time to first bowel movement were reduced (p<0.05). Paracetamol did not reduce the incidence of PONV. NSAIDs reduced postoperative opioid consumption and the incidence of PONV (p<0.05). Dexamethasone and 5-HT3 antagonists reduced the incidence of PONV compared to controls. Conclusions Epidural anaesthesia appears to not reduce length of hospital stay or incidence of PONV despite reducing pain intensity and ileus. NSAIDs are more effective than paracetamol in reducing postoperative opioid consumption and PONV, while dexamethasone and 5-HT3 antagonists are both effective in reducing PONV.
Long-term Electrically Stable Silver Nanowire Composite Transparent Electrode under High Current Density

Abstract:Silver nanowire (AgNW) network has been employed into many electronic devices as transparent electrode. However, the poor electrical stability under current shock has been seriously holding its practical application, and we still lack a long-term electrically stable AgNW system to study the underlying fundamentals of electrical failure. In this work, the electrical stability performance and failure mechanism of chitosan-ascorbic acid (Chi-AsA)/AgNW composite under current stress were thoroughly studied. The composite electrode maintained stable above 24,000 h under high current density of 100 mA cm(-1). The main failure in AgNW composite is found to be a wave break perpendicular to the current instead of traditional uniform degradation across the entire AgNW networks. More interestingly, the AgNWs in failed composite electrode maintained their original smooth morphology excepting the crack region, while the AgNWs in pristine networks degraded to nanoparticles or became disconnected everywhere. The patterned AgNW composite in microscale exhibits long lifetime in resisting current stress as well. The effect of over-coating location, electrical stress, temperature, and over-coating materials on the electrical stability were studied. The over-coating layer of Chi-AsA is proven to suppress the silver atoms from electromigration, reduce the concentrated Joule heating at junctions, and inhibit the corrosion. The Chi-AsA/AgNW composite enables electrically stable transparent conductor for long-serving optoelectronics, and the mechanism investigation deepens the comprehension of preparing electrically stable AgNW system.
