Abstract:Introduction Cervical cancer is the second most common gynecological cancer in Bangladesh. Lack of awareness of screening methods, risk factors, and symptoms may lead to presenting most cervical cancers at an advanced stage. We investigated knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer (CCa) among females at the Sheikh Hasina Medical College (SHMC) of Tangail district in Bangladesh. Methods A cross sectional survey was conducted to collect data via a structured questionnaire from SHMC during the period of February 2019 to January 2020. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and knowledge of cervical cancer were collected. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with having heard and knowledge of cervical cancer. A p -value <0.05 was considered significant. Result Of all the interviews conducted, only 45.2% (493/1090) had heard of cervical cancer as a disease. Women were more likely to be aware of CCa if they were lived in urban areas, had higher education (university level education) and belong to high income families. The study revealed evidence of significant association between marital, literacy, residence and socio-economic status with women’s knowledge on cervical cancer ( p < 0.05). Conclusion This study serves to highlight that there was impoverished knowledge about cervical cancer among Bangladeshi women. Hence, this indicates the government should take proper steps to raise awareness and knowledge levels via educational programs and health counseling.

Abstract:Introduction: Cervical cancer is an important public health issue in Bangladesh. Despite government efforts, the awareness and healthcare utilization in rural areas are inadequate. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in six districts of Barishal division over 997 respondents aged 15-64 years. The demographic variables, accessibility to healthcare, vaccination status, awareness of HPV causing cervical cancer, and knowledge of the HPV vaccine were recorded through a structured questionnaire. T-test for univariate and chi-square test for bi-variate analysis were used. Logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with awareness. Results: Most of the participants were SSC passed (45.3%), unemployed (54.4%), and married (74.4%). While 83.5% were aware of cervical cancer, only 3.3% knew about HPV's role. The majority (96.2%) had never been tested for HPV, albeit 79.5% knew about the vaccine, and only 2.45% were vaccinated. Knowledge levels were low, with only 1.4% demonstrating sound knowledge, mostly associating with higher income, residing closer to healthcare facilities, and being married. Bhola district participants had highest level of awareness, and the lowest was in Pirojpur. Education level was positively correlated with knowledge, with graduates being most aware. Logistic regression showed education, marital status, willingness to vaccinate daughters, and district were significantly related with better awareness, while income, distance, and age did not. Conclusion: Mass education and awareness campaigns may improve the awareness level in rural community.

Abstract:This scoping review summarises the findings of research conducted on cancer screening in Bangladesh, including the prevalence, awareness, barriers, and evaluation of screening programmes, by performing a comprehensive search of electronic databases and gray literature. 25 studies that met inclusion criteria were included in the final analysis. Most of the studies were about screening for cervical cancer, were quantitative, were cross-sectional, and were conducted in hospital settings. The main challenges to screening uptake were shyness, fear, a lack of knowledge, and an inadequate understanding of the concept of screening. Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) was found to be a simple and cost-efficient way to detect early-stage cervical cancer. However, breast self-examination (BSE) was reported to be insufficient. Education was found to have a positive impact on cancer screening knowledge and practice, but more needs to be done to improve screening rates, such as the utilisation of media, particularly in rural areas. The results of this scoping review highlight Bangladesh's low cancer screening prevalence and uptake and suggest that targeted awareness campaigns and enhanced access to screening services are required to increase cancer screening uptake and reduce the cancer burden in Bangladesh.

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. Sub- Saharan Africa has a high incidence, prevalence and mortality due to shortage and underutilization of screening facilities. This study aims to assess knowledge and attitude towards cervical cancer and its prevention, as well as practice of cervical cancer screening. Methods: This cross-sectional community- based study was conducted in Butajira, Ethiopia in February 2018. Systematic cluster randomized sampling was used to select households from which women in the targeted age group of 30-49 years were invited to participate. Data was collected using a quantitative door to door approach. The questionnaire included socio-demographic data, obstetric history, general knowledge, risk factors, attitude and practice. Logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with knowledge, attitude and practice after dichotomizing the scores using the median as cut off point. Results: Three hundred forty-two out of 354 women completed the interviewer administered questionnaire making the response rate 96.3%. 125 women (36%) were aware of cervical cancer and 14 (4.7%) knew symptoms. None of the women named HPV as a risk factor. 61% thought it was a deadly disease, 13.5% felt at risk of developing cervical cancer and 60.7% said cervical cancer is treatable. Eight women (2.3%) had previously been screened. 48.1% had a source of information concerning cervical cancer, of which 66.5% named nurses. Better knowledge was associated with 1-8 years of education (OR = 2.4; CI: 2.4-1.3), having a source of information (OR = 9.1, CI:4.0-20.6), use of contraceptives (OR = 2.3, CI: 1.3-4.0) and a higher income (OR = 1.009, CI: 1.00-1.01). Naming nurses (OR:5.0, CI:2.4-10.3), another source of information (OR = 3.3, CI:1.2-9.0), use of contraceptives (OR = 2.2, CI:1.2-3.8) and living in an urban area (OR = 3.3, CI:1.2-9.0) were associated with a positive attitude. Naming nurses (OR = 21,0, CI:10.4-42.3) and another source of information (OR = 5.8, CI:2.4-13.5) were associated with participating in cervical cancer screening. Conclusion: Most women were unaware of cervical cancer, HPV-infection as a risk factor and did not feel susceptible to cervical cancer. As Health workers were the most commonly mentioned source of information, focus should be put on their further education.

Abstract:1626 Background: Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Prior studies associate high cervical cancer awareness with reductions in cervical cancer incidence. Herein we utilize nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys Program (DHS) to analyze correlates of cervical cancer awareness and inform global outreach strategies. Methods: All DHS surveys conducted between 2017-2022 were queried for questions on cervical cancer awareness. Socio-demographic (e.g., age, marital status), socioeconomic (e.g., education, wealth, literacy) and variables pertaining to healthcare decision making, intimate partner violence (IPV), and female genital mutilation/circumcision (FGC/M)) were extracted. Sample weights were applied, and bivariate logistic regressions were performed. Variables with p<0.20 were included in multivariate analysis. Results: Of the DHS surveys, we analyzed data from 25,239 women aged 15-49 years old living in Mauritania, Madagascar, and Benin - the only three countries which met search criteria. Cervical cancer awareness varied from 41% in Mauritania (3,283/7,290), 32% in Madagascar (3,071/9597), and 10% in Benin (783/7,712). After multivariate adjustment, age (OR=1.03 [1.02-1.04]; OR=1.04 [1.03-1.05]; OR=1.03 [1.01-1.05]), education (OR=1.21 [1.06-1.38]; OR=1.68 [1.48-1.91]; OR=1.83 [1.51-2.23]), and wealth index (OR=1.18 [1.07-1.30]; OR=1.24 [1.16-1.32]; OR=1.18 [1.07-1.30]) were associated with increased awareness across Mauritania, Madagascar, and Benin, respectively. Mobile telephone ownership was associated with increased awareness in Mauritania (OR=1.87 [1.48-2.36]) and Benin (OR=1.66 [1.27-2.19]), and internet usage was associated with increased awareness in Madagascar (OR=1.75 [1.46-2.10]) and Benin (OR=1.71 [1.33-2.31]). Women who underwent FCG/M (OR=0.81 [0.67-0.98]) were associated with decreased awareness in Mauritania. Women who experienced IPV were associated with increased awareness (OR=1.39 [1.11-1.73]) in Mauritania. Women who independently make healthcare decisions were associated with decreased awareness in Mauritania (OR=0.88 [0.83-0.95]) but increased awareness in Madagascar (OR=1.07 [1-1.15]). Rurality was associated with decreased awareness in Madagascar (OR=0.71 [0.59-0.84]). Last, less than 1% (200/25,239) of all women were screened for cervical cancer. Conclusions: Age, education, and wealth were associated with increasing awareness, while rurality and FGM/C were associated with decreased awareness in various settings. Given the known association between awareness and screening, targeted efforts to increase awareness among women with lower socioeconomic status has the potential to reduce global cervical cancer disparities.

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among women in Tanzania. Knowledge of and willingness to receive a cervical cancer screening are important determinants of prevention. This study aimed to describe women's awareness of cervical cancer and to explore the attitudes toward, acceptability of and barriers to cervical cancer screening (CCS) in Zanzibar.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to June 2018 involving 1483 women from 10 districts in Zanzibar who responded to questionnaires concerning their general demo-graphic characteristics, screening willingness and awareness of cervical cancer. Chi-square tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and stepwise multiple regression were conducted using STATA 15.1 software.Results: The average total knowledge score (TKS) was 7.84±5.32 on a 23-point scale. Educational level and family income were positively correlated with the TKS. Previous schistosomiasis history and family genetic disease history were strong predictors of screening willingness. Women were less likely to be screened freely if they had 7 or more deliveries and were unaware of any previous family tumor history. Age and educational level were negatively associated non-free screening willingness, while family income was positively associated; being divorced/widowed or single and being unaware of any previous family tumor history were predictors of screening reluctance, while previous disease history was a strong predictor of non-free screening willingness. Fear of screening and inconvenience were the primary concerns among the Zanzibari interviewees. Compared to the 20-49 age group, more women in the less than 20 and 50 or more age groups thought cervical cancer screening was not necessary. The highest rate of cognitive accuracy in regard to cervical cancer warning signs and risk factors was only 37.76%.Conclusions: The findings revealed that knowledge of cervical cancer was poor. Educational level, family income and awareness of previous disease history were significant influencing factors of screening uptake. Specific awareness programs to increase knowledge of cervical cancer and screening willingness should be designed and implemented in the public without delay, especially for younger and elderly women.Keywords: Knowledge, Cervical cancer, Screening, Zanzibar

Abstract:Background: Vaccination against Human papillomavirus (HPV) is recommended to avoid HPV infections and its associated diseases, including cervical cancer. However, there is no awareness study among Bangladeshi population. Hence, this nationwide study was conducted to explore HPV vaccine awareness and its determinants among parents of eligible adolescent girls. Methods: This study was conducted among the parents of daughters aged 9-15 years from 42 out of 64 randomly selected districts of Bangladesh between June 28 to August 2, 2023. A multistage sampling method was used to enroll 2151 study participants from all eight divisions of Bangladesh. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for face-to-face interviews in this study. The statistical software Stata (Version 17) was used for statistical analyses. Results: The average age of the participants was 38.18 (±5.86) years. Only 22.32 % of the participants were aware of the HPV vaccine. Every additional year of age increased the likelihood of being aware of the HPV vaccine by 3 % (AOR: 1.03; 95%CI: 1.00-1.06). Participants residing in the urban area had 3.56 times higher odds of awareness than rural and semi-urban people. Businessmen and housewives had 60 % (AOR: 0.40; 95 % CI: 0.22-0.69) and 77 % (AOR: 0.23; 95 % CI: 0.16-0.33) lower odds in comparison to job holders. The lower-income group exhibited significantly higher odds of awareness (AOR: 0.25, 95%CI: 0.16-0.39) compared to the middle and the higher-income group. Participants who never went through routine health check-ups had 77 % lower odds of being aware than those who availed of regular routine check-ups (AOR: 0.23; 95%CI: 0.16-0.34). Conclusion: Awareness of the HPV vaccine among the general population of Bangladesh is very low. Age, residence, occupation, monthly income, and routine medical check-ups were associated with HPV vaccine awareness. A nationwide awareness campaign would increase this awareness level among the Bangladeshi population, especially among the parents of daughters.

Abstract:Abstracts Background Cervical cancer ranks as the common prevalent cancer, among women worldwide especially impacting low-resource countries. In Bangladesh, this accounts for 12% of all cancer cases. The development of cancer is closely linked to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Despite the availability of HPV vaccines, their uptake remains limited in Bangladesh. Thus, this research aims to assess the knowledge and willingness of parents and school teachers regarding HPV vaccination for eligible girls in Bangladesh. Methodology This study involved 406 parents and school teachers of girls aged 9-14 years from Dhaka city. A cross-sectional study design was used. Data collection was done through a questionnaire administered by interviewers after pre-testing and refinement for clarity and reliability. Analysis was carried out using Stata 17 software. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used to uncover associations and predictors related to knowledge levels and willingness. Results Findings revealed that a majority of participants (64.04%) exhibited an understanding of HPV and cervical cancer yet a high percentage (98.28%) expressed willingness to engage in HPV vaccination initiatives. participants with primary (AOR=3.306, p<0.005), secondary (AOR=8.806, p<0.001), and higher education (AOR=5.059, p<0.001), as well as those from upper-middle-income groups (AOR=3.038, p<0.001), had significantly higher knowledge of HPV and cervical cancer. Conclusion The research emphasizes lack of knowledge regarding HPV and its vaccination among parents and educators in Bangladesh despite a willingness to vaccinate. These results emphasize the importance of tailored initiatives and better access, to health information to increase HPV vaccine acceptance and lower the incidence of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer knowledge and screening uptake by marginalized population of women in inner-city Durban, South Africa: Insights into the need for increased health literacy

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer in South Africa accounts for 15.85% of all female cancers and 30.29% of African female cancers, resulting in over 5000 deaths annually. South Africa’s proposed move towards universal healthcare places emphasis on health promotion through education and screening, but there is little data on the baseline levels of knowledge and screening uptake regarding cervical cancer. This study explored the levels of knowledge and screening rates of cervical cancer among vulnerable women living in the inner-city of Durban, South Africa. Methods: A mixed-method study was conducted within the context of a Women’s Health outreach initiative. Data were collected from women attending the outreach ( n = 109), many of whom were from marginalized communities. A pre-intervention survey was used to collect the data. This was followed by cervical cancer education sessions and the opportunity for a free Pap smear. Results: Knowledge of cervical cancer was low (<25%) and only a third of the women had previously been screened. After the educational sessions, 64% of women ( n = 70) took advantage of the opportunity for Pap smears, with many expressing the need for wider cervical cancer education, screening centres and support groups. Only 20% of the Pap smears were normal ( n = 14). Half of the women tested positive for infections ( n = 36; 51.4%), and a small proportion ( n = 8; 11.4%) tested positive for human papilloma virus. Abnormal cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN1 and CIN 2) were also detected in this population ( n = 12; 17.1%). Conclusion: Cervical cancer knowledge and screening among vulnerable women in Durban, South Africa, is inadequate, especially considering the high levels of abnormality found in the Pap smears. Education drives, accompanied with the provision of free testing, are required. Community health outreach initiatives in collaboration with non-government organizations set in accessible locations could be a possible course of action.

Abstract:A LHRH-like substance is detectable in the urine. It is extractable by glass powder, which suggests that it is a peptide, and it can be concentrated by anti-LHRH affinity chromatography, strongly suggesting that it is not a contaminant in the RIA. It is composed of very little intact LHRH, and the great majority appears as multiple smaller fractions, although the possibility of "urinary LHRH" being a slightly larger peptide containing a sequence similar or identical to that of LHRH has not been entirely eliminated. Urinary measurements show no correlation with the clinical state, and the widely differing values obtained using different antisera in the present study emphasize the need for in-depth antiserum binding studies prior to clinical use in the LHRH radioimmunoassay.
Knowledge and Perceptions of Cervical Cancer Screening in Nhlambeni, Eswatini: Understanding Facilitators and Barriers for Prevention Interventions

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer (CC) is a leading cause of cancer mortality in Eswatini. Preventative programs are readily available at the primary health facilities. Recently, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine has been introduced targeting both in- and out-of-school girls ages between 9 and 14 years old. The government of Eswatini has integrated cervical cancer screening into existing services and health activities, especially in HIV clinics, however, the uptake of screening remains low. Aim: This study explored women's perceptions, knowledge, intervention strategies, facilitators and barriers to scaling up cervical cancer prevention in Nhlambeni community in Eswatini. Methods: A qualitative approach was utilized for this study and key informant semi-structured interviews were conducted in November 2019. Purposive sampling was undertaken in this study and MAX QDA software was utilized for data analysis. Results: In total, 19 key informants were enrolled, the participants were from public facilities 7(37%), non-governmental organization 9 (47%) and patients 3 (16%). The age range for participants was between 25 - 40 years. Five themes were inductive and deductive which included: current interventions that are targeted for cervical cancer screening, women's source of information about cervical cancer screening activities, what promotion strategies could increase cervical cancer screening, understanding about cervical cancer symptoms/diagnosis of cervical cancer and cultural beliefs and attitudes involved in cervical cancer screening activities. Conclusions: Despite limited knowledge of cervical cancer and misconceptions about screening, the concept of screening for prevention and providers' influence were motivators for participation in screening. Cervical cancer screen-and-treat programs should consider utilizing language that communicates the need for cervical cancer screening and treatment and utilize prevention concepts that may already be familiar to women living there. In order to enhance cervical cancer prevention initiatives, reduce the stigma associated with the disease, and boost cervical cancer screening rates, it is imperative that there be ongoing community education and engagement on cervical cancer, aimed at both men and women.

Abstract:Paraganglia found in the subserosa of nine of ten surgically removed gallbladders had morphologic features and staining characteristics similar to those of other sites. Although they were not difficult to locate in subserial sections, their sparseness and smallness explains the rarity with which they have been encountered in the routine histologic gallbladder examination. The strong, finely granular argyrophilia of the chief cell cytoplasm in all of the glomera studied offer a simple means of identifying them when only a portion of the structure is viewed.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To find out the knowledge, attitude, practice, and barriers of cervical cancer screening in mid-western rural, Nepal.METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Women aged 20 or more were interviewed using a structured questionnaire regarding the socio-demographic information, knowledge, attitude, practice, and barriers to the cervical cancer screening.RESULTS: Total of 360 participants were recruited for this study, mean age was 30.13±10.4 years. More than 87% of participants had inadequate knowledge, but around 72% had a favorable attitude towards cervical cancer screening. There was a significant portion of women (86.4%) had never done any cervical cancer screening test. Despite being higher literacy rate of Brahmin and Chhetri ethnic group, they were less likely to attend the cervical cancer screening than Dalit and Janajati (p<0.001); and those who had a positive family history of cancer were more likely to attend the cervical cancer screening (p<0.001). Similarly, married women, who had adequate knowledge and or favorable attitude, were more likely to practice cervical cancer screening, though statistically not significant. Factors such as "No symptoms," "Lack of awareness," "Embarrassment," etc. were the most common barriers for the cervical cancer screening.CONCLUSION: The adequate knowledge and practice of cervical cancer screening were meager among rural Nepalese women, but most of them had a favorable attitude. There is an imperative need for related awareness programs to promote the uptake of cervical cancer screening tests.

Abstract:Background: Nearly every family in the world is touched by cancer, which is now responsible for almost one in six deaths globally. Aim of this study was to access Indian woman's awareness towards cervical screening methods to promote strategies for increasing its uptake.Methods: A comprehensive questionnaire based cross-sectional observational survey was conducted in Pt. JNM Medical College and Dr. BRAM hospital, Raipur, Chhattisgarh from September 2018 to July 2019. Participants were selected by sampling between 21 to 59 years of age who have given consent for study.Results: Out of 1008 participants only 336 (33.3%) participants were aware about screening of cervical cancer and less than 28% participants were aware about pap smear, time of investigation, method of pap smear, health centre, association of HPV virus with cervical cancer, availability at vaccination, and with regard to risk factors only 27.9% women were aware that there is increased risk of cervical cancer due to multiple partners, 17.6% aware of risk due to increase in number of children’s, 11.1% aware of increase in risk of cervical cancer due to early initiation of sexual activity. Younger women (age 30-35, odds ratio 1.24, 95% CI 0.78-1.32, p-value 0.05), low socioeconomic status (odds ratio 1.74, 95% CI 0.76-2.12, p-value 0.01), education level (≤ secondary education odds ratio 1.64 95% CI 0.85-2.18 p-value 0.000, ≥ higher secondary or above education odds ratio 2.32 95% CI 1.21-2.89 p-value 0.001) and age at marriage (odds ratio 2.21, 95% CI 0.78-2.18, p-value 0.000) all had a significant relationship with the awareness of Pap smear test. Two-third of the females in the study stated that lack of awareness as the major reason for not getting a pap smear while another one- third stated lack of recommendation by health care professionals as major hurdle.Conclusions: This study found that woman's fear, pain and embarrassment, along with cultural influences, deterred them from undergoing screening.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer is one of the major concerns of public health importance in today's world. It is a leading cause of mortality in women of reproductive age group worldwide, mainly in developing countries. Reduction in mortality and morbidity due to cervical cancer is possible through early detection and treatment. The major factors influencing the early detection of cervical cancer are knowledge regarding risk factors, screening, Pap smear, and symptoms among women.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of women about the risk factors, symptoms, and prevention of cervical cancer. Data were obtained from 220 women who visited international trade fair using a pretested self-administered questionnaire.RESULTS: Only 75 study women (50.0%) had ever heard of cervical cancer. The knowledge regarding cervical cancer and its various domains was significantly higher in students and unmarried women. The foul-smelling vaginal discharge was the most common early symptom of cervical cancer according to most of the study women (26, 17.3%). Most of the study women (19, 12.7%) reported tobacco and smoking as the most common risk factor associated with cervical cancer. Only 39 women (26%) had ever heard of cervical cancer screening. Only 27 women (18.0%) ever had Pap smear done in the past and 87 women (58.0%) were willing to undergo cervical cancer screening is offered free of cost.CONCLUSION: The study demonstrates the lack of awareness in women regarding cervical cancer and its screening modalities. This necessitates spreading awareness regarding early symptoms and risk factors associated with cervical cancer for early detection and treatment initiation.

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer causes significant morbidity and mortality among women in India. Despite national screening guidelines, uptake of these tools remains poor, especially in rural areas where complex sociocultural factors are at play. Integrated mixed-methods designs can provide better insights into multilevel barriers influencing screening behaviours. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and sociocultural factors associated with cervical cancer prevention among marginalized rural women. Methods: A mixed-method study of 400 women aged older than 18 years was conducted using a pretested questionnaire on cervical cancer knowledge, attitudes, self-reported screening practices, and sociodemographic variables. An exploratory qualitative study also interviewed 30 women to explore perspectives on screening using semi-structured guides. The survey data were analyzed via logistic regression, and thematic analysis was performed for the qualitative data. The results were triangulated to enable nuanced interpretation. Results: Only 27% (108/400) of participants had heard of cervical cancer, and 61% (244/400) were illiterate. Poor knowledge was observed in 83% (332/400) of participants, predicted by early marriage, high parity, low education, and socioeconomic status. Despite 64% (254/400) expressing positive attitudes, only 9% (36/400) reported undergoing cervical cancer screening. None of the participants were vaccinated against human papillomaviruses (HPV). Stigma, gender roles, spousal communication gaps, and access barriers emerged as key qualitative themes. The integrated results highlighted the intersections between villagers' worldviews and sociocultural norms and between access issues and prevention. Conclusions: Multifaceted sociocultural challenges underpin the cervical cancer prevention gap among marginalized rural women. Grassroots educational efforts respectfully addressing fears and stigma, along with increased male engagement, community health worker training, and integrated screening services, can promote informed screening decisions among underserved groups.

Abstract:Knowledge of risk factors and symptoms of cervical cancer has been found to promote uptake of screening of cervical cancer. Most interventions targeted women without much involvement of men (husbands/decision makers) who are often decision makers in many low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed at assessing baseline knowledge and intended behavior of both women and men to enable design specific targeted messages to increase uptake of cervical cancer screening and promote early detection of women with symptoms.

Abstract:The main purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge of cervical cancer among women in rural Nepal and explore the feasibility and impact of a community-based awareness program on cervical cancer. Community-based educational meetings on cervical cancer and its prevention were conducted among women’s groups in rural Nepal. Through a questionnaire, the women’s baseline knowledge of risk factors, symptoms, and perceived risk of cervical cancer were identified. The willingness to participate in cervical cancer screening was compared before and after the educational meeting. The meetings were followed by a cervical cancer screening program. Among the 122 participants at the educational meeting, only 6 % had heard of cervical cancer. Their baseline knowledge of risk factors and symptoms was poor. The proportion of women willing to participate in cervical screening increased from 15.6 to 100 % after attending the educational meeting. All the study subjects participated in the screening program. Additionally, the study participants recruited a further 222 of their peers for screening. Poor knowledge of cervical cancer among women in rural Nepal highlights the urgency of public awareness programs for cervical cancer at a national level. A community-based awareness program can change women’s attitude to cervical screening, and women’s groups can play a major role in promoting participation in cervical cancer screening programs.
