Abstract:Abstract Background Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women and second most common cancer after lung cancer. The prognosis of breast cancer depends on early detection and intervention which in turn relies upon awareness. Health workers in all communities are responsible for educating the population at risk. This study evaluates the knowledge regarding breast cancer, personal judgment of confidence, perceived barriers to help seeking and breast self-examination practices among Pakistani female medical students and studies the impact of clinical training on the studied variables. Methods Descriptive cross-sectional study design using self-administered validated questionnaires (BCAM-Breast Cancer Awareness Measure designed by Cancer Research UK) was employed. Female medical students enrolled in clinical and pre-clinical classes of King Edward Medical University, Lahore were targeted and questioned regarding symptoms, risk factors and their practices regarding breast cancer. Possible barriers to seeking help were also studied. Result The mean number of symptoms correctly identified was 6.7 ± 3.2 (5.5 ± 3.2 for pre-clinical and 7.8 ± 2.9 for clinical students) and for risk factors it was 4.3 ± 2.1 (3.7 ± 2.1 for pre-clinical and 4.7 ± 2.2 for clinical students). The difference in the level of perception of two groups was found to be significant ( p < 0.001 for symptoms and p < 0.001 for risk factors). 38.7% of the subjects responded that they check their breasts rarely, 33.1% were fairly confident while 8.6% were very confident about detecting a change in their breast, 50.0% never noticed a change in their breast, and 77.4% will contact a doctor within a week or less of finding a change in their breast. Confidence about detecting a change significantly improved ( p < 0.001) after the start of clinical training. Conclusion This study suggests that clinical training may have improved knowledge of female medical students regarding breast cancer; yet the knowledge related to the symptoms and risk factors of breast cancer and frequency of breast self-examination of female medical students is less than anticipated.

Abstract:Abstract Background Breast cancer is a global health issue and a leading cause of death among women. Early detection through increased awareness and knowledge on breast cancer and breast cancer screening is thus crucial. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of an educational intervention program on breast cancer knowledge and the practice of breast self-examination among young female students of a university in Bangladesh. Methods A quasi-experimental (pre-post) study design was conducted at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. Educational information on breast cancer and breast self-examination (BSE), demonstration of BSE procedure and leaflets were distributed among 400 female students after obtaining written informed consent. The stepwise procedures of BSE performance were demonstrated with images. Pre-intervention and 15 days post-intervention assessments were conducted to assess the changes in knowledge on breast cancer and practices of BSE. Mc-Nemar’s tests and paired sampled t -tests were performed to investigate the differences between pre- and post-test stages. Results A total of 400 female university students aged 18-26 years were included in the sample. Significant changes were found in knowledge and awareness about breast cancer and BSE practices after the educational intervention. The significant differences were measured in the mean scores of pre-test vs. post-test: breast cancer symptoms (2.99 ± 1.05 vs. 6.35 ± 1.15; p < 0.001), risk factors (3.35 ± 1.19 vs. 7.56 ± 1.04; p < 0.001), treatment (1.79 ± 0.90 vs. 4.63 ± 0.84; p < 0.001), prevention (3.82 ± 1.32 vs. 7.14 ± 1.03; p < 0.001), screening of breast cancer (1.82 ± 0.55 vs. 3.98 ± 0.71; p < 0.001) and process of BSE (1.57 ± 1.86 vs. 3.94 ± 0.93; p < 0.001). Likewise, a significant percentage of change in BSE practices was obtained between pre-test and post-test (21.3% vs. 33.8%; p < 0.001). Conclusions Study findings confirm that the study population had inadequate awareness and knowledge at baseline which was improved significantly after educational intervention. A nationwide roll-out with community-based interventions is recommended for the female population in both rural and urban areas.

Abstract:Introduction Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women worldwide, and its prevalence is rising among younger women of reproductive age. The study aims to investigate their awareness of breast cancer risk factors, warning indicators, and preventive methods. The study also aimed to assess participants' knowledge of breast self-examination (BSE) and their practices with this crucial screening method. Methodology To achieve these goals, we used a cross-sectional survey employing a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire included multiple-choice and open-ended items about breast cancer awareness, knowledge, and practices. Results There were 400 questionnaires given out to female patients attending the out-patient department, and 290 of them were completed and returned. The majority of responders to our poll, 88 %, were aware that breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women. The fact that 57 % of the individuals never examined their own breasts is a worrying result. There was a statistically significant difference between knowledge and family history ( X 2 = 13.8, P < 0.001) and knowledge and schooling ( X 2 = 6.4,P < 0.001). Both the practise of BSE and knowledge of BC were good in respondents under the age of 45, however they differed statistically significantly ( X 2- 2.8,P = 0.041 and X 2- 2.6, P = 0.001, respectively). Conclusion Understanding the extent of breast cancer awareness and knowledge gaps in this population is critical for planning targeted interventions and educational efforts. By identifying areas where knowledge is weak, healthcare practitioners and governments can implement policies to encourage early detection practices, reduce delays in seeking medical aid, and ultimately improve breast cancer outcomes.

Abstract:Background: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths among women worldwide. Diagnosis of breast cancer at an earlier stage allows women more treatment choices and greater chance of long term survival. Breast self-examination (BSE) once a month contributes to a woman’s heightened awareness of what is normal for her. It is recommended that women over the age of 20 years perform monthly breast self-examination to detect new lumps and other changes in their breast. In view of the fact that mammography is not readily available in resource limited countries like Ethiopia, this study was designed to assess Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of regular Breast self-examination amongst female health science students of Adama science and Technology University in 2014. Methodology: A cross-sectional study design was used to select 368 study subjects randomly. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect information. The collected data were entered into Epi-info version 3.5.1. After cleaning the data it was exported to SPSS version 21 for further analysis. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were also performed with logistic regression to measure the association between dependent & independent variables. Result: A total of 368 respondents participated in the study, of these, only 8.7% of them had good knowledge and 59.2% had positive attitude towards BSE. About two fifth (39.4%) of the respondents had done breast selfexaminations, from these only 9.7% of them practiced monthly. Statistically significant association was obtained only with, level of education of the participant, father’s educational level and program of enrolment. Conclusion and recommendation: Knowledge and practice of BSE was low, even though majority of them have positive attitude. Being health was the major mentioned reasons for not doing BSE. The ministry of health is recommended to promote awareness about BSE through emergence of groups in the University, celebrating days like breast cancer day.

Abstract:The human retinoic acid receptor alpha (hRAR alpha) exhibits cell-specific transcriptional activity. Previously, it was shown that in the absence of hormone the wild-type receptor is a transcriptional silencer in L cells, whereas it lacks silencing function and is a weak activator in CV1 cells. Addition of hormone leads to a further increase in transactivation in CV1 cells. Thus, the retinoic acid response mediated by RAR alpha is weak in these cells. It was shown that the CV1-specific effect is due to the receptor C terminus. We show, that the failure of silencing by RAR is not due to a general lack of corepressors in CV1 cells, since the silencing domain of RAR is functionally active and exhibits active repression in these cells. Furthermore, we show that the conserved AF2/tau c activation function of RAR is responsible for the cell-specific inhibition of silencing. Thereby, the CV1 cell specificity was abolished by replacing AF2/tau c of RAR with the corresponding sequence of the thyroid hormone receptor. Thus, we find a new role of the C-terminal conserved activation function AF2/tau c in that, specifically, the RAR AF2/tau c-sequence is able to prevent silencing of RAR in a cell-specific manner. In addition, we show that the inhibitory effect of AF2/tau c in CV1 cells can be overcome by expression of the corepressor SMRT (silencing mediator of retinoic acid and thyroid hormone receptor), but not by that of N-CoR (nuclear receptor corepressor). The expression of these two corepressors, however, had no measurable effect on RAR-mediated silencing in L cells. Thus, the expression of a corepressor can lead to a dramatic increase of hormonal response in a cell-specific manner.

Abstract:Introduction: Breast cancer is a global health concern and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Breast self examination (BSE) is a commonly recommended screening method for breast cancer. This study intends to assess the knowledge of breast cancer and its screening in women aged 18-25 in Bangalore city and to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of women aged 18-25 in Bangalore city with regards to breast self examination among the female college students studying non medical courses in Bangalore City, Karnataka, India. Materials and methods: A questionnaire‑based study was conducted among women aged 18-25 in Bangalore city and their scores in the fields of knowledge, attitude, and practice were calculated.Independent sample t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test of significance were used to examine the relation between the demographic characteristics and scores. Results: The mean knowledge score was 3.05 (SD:1.37, range:0-6). Knowledge scores significantly differed across family income per month (P<0.05), age groups (P<0.001), and level of education of father (P<0.05). The mean attitude score was 3.95 ( SD:1.78, range:1-8). The mean practice score was 0.83 (SD: 0.954, range:0-3).Practice scores varied significantly across age groups (P<0.05) , level of education of mother (P<0.05) and occupation of father (P<0.001).The correlation coefficients are 0.484 and 0.257 respectively (p<0.05). Conclusion: Breast Self Exam (BSE) is an easy method of early detection of breast cancer. There is a need to develop and adopt culturally appropriate and proven interventions to inform and train women about BSE in a diverse country like India. The study can be used as a basis to help raise awareness about BSE and its benefits among the same.

Abstract:Introduction Cervical cancer is the second most common gynecological cancer in Bangladesh. Lack of awareness of screening methods, risk factors, and symptoms may lead to presenting most cervical cancers at an advanced stage. We investigated knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer (CCa) among females at the Sheikh Hasina Medical College (SHMC) of Tangail district in Bangladesh. Methods A cross sectional survey was conducted to collect data via a structured questionnaire from SHMC during the period of February 2019 to January 2020. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and knowledge of cervical cancer were collected. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with having heard and knowledge of cervical cancer. A p -value <0.05 was considered significant. Result Of all the interviews conducted, only 45.2% (493/1090) had heard of cervical cancer as a disease. Women were more likely to be aware of CCa if they were lived in urban areas, had higher education (university level education) and belong to high income families. The study revealed evidence of significant association between marital, literacy, residence and socio-economic status with women’s knowledge on cervical cancer ( p < 0.05). Conclusion This study serves to highlight that there was impoverished knowledge about cervical cancer among Bangladeshi women. Hence, this indicates the government should take proper steps to raise awareness and knowledge levels via educational programs and health counseling.

Abstract:Background Breast cancer is the greatest common cancer in women worldwide, with approximately 1.7 million new cases diagnosed each year in the world which accounts for 12% of all new cancer cases and 25% of all cancers in women. Even though the higher mortality rate of breast cancer in low and middle-income countries, the practice of early detection methods is low and the majority of the patients who appeared at an advanced stage of the disease need palliative care with little survival rates. However, evidence is scarce on the knowledge and practice of breast cancer early detection methods among women of reproductive age in Ethiopia. Therefore we aimed to assess the knowledge on risk factors and practice of early detection methods of breast cancer among female graduating students of Debre Tabor University. Methods Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted. A stratified random sampling technique was used. Data were collected with a self-administer questionnaire. The collected data were processed and analyzed with the computer using SPSS version 25 software. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the socio-demographic information of participants. Binary and multivariable logistic regression with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) was used to identify factors associated with the outcome variable. Statistical significance was stated at p < 0.05. Result A total of 270 female students participated in the study. The median age (± SD) was 24.63 years (± 1.26). All of the students heard about breast cancer and early detection methods. About 206 (76.67%) of the participants had good knowledge of breast self-examination. Mass media, health professionals, and friends in combination were the main source of information 172 (63.77%), only 110 (40.70%) of students performed a breast-self-examination and the rest did not perform it due to forgetting fullness and lack of knowledge. About 208 (77.1%) of the respondents respond family history is a risk factor for breast cancer. Being a health science student (AOR = 2.32; 95% CI: 2.12, 3.52), family history of breast problems (AOR = 3.41; 95% CI: 3.22, 8.33), and having a good level of knowledge (AOR = 1.83; 95% CI: 1.01, 5.68) were the factors associated with the practice of breast self-examination. Conclusion Most of the participants were unaware of the benefits, appropriate timing, and techniques of doing a breast self-examination. Health science students had better awareness & practice of breast self-examination than non-health science students. Trained health professionals must give focus on giving health information regarding risk factors of breast cancer and methods of early detection of breast cancer to the public & their clients.
Awareness regarding breast cancer amongst women in Pakistan: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common cause of cancer death in Pakistan. In 2019, Pakistan saw the highest global BCa-associated death rate. But do Pakistani women know about the various aspects of BCa? And how prevalent are BCa screening methods amongst Pakistani females? These questions formed the basis for our study. Methods We conducted this review in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. On September 1, 2023, we searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar, and performed a citation search to search for eligible studies published in 2010 or after, using the following terms: “breast cancer” and “Pakistan”. Observational studies that evaluated BCa awareness and/or practice amongst Pakistani females who were not associated with medicine were eligible. We used the National Institutes of Health quality assessment tool to assess the risk of bias. We conducted a proportion meta-analysis to calculate pooled prevalences for variables. Results Responses from 9766 Pakistani women across 18 included studies showed alarmingly low levels of BCa knowledge: risk factors, 42.7% (95% CI: 34.1%-51.4%); symptoms, 41.8% (95% CI: 26.2%-57.5%); diagnostic modalities, 36.3% (95% CI: 23.1%-49.4%); treatments, 46.6% (95% CI: 13.5%-79.8%). Prevalence of breast self-examination (BSE) and ever having undergone a clinical breast exam (CBE) was 28.7% (95% CI: 17.9%-39.6%) and 15.3% (95 CI: 11.2%-19.4%), respectively. BCa knowledge was significantly associated with better educational status, age, and socioeconomic status. Conclusion On average, only two in five Pakistani women are aware of one or more risk factors, symptoms, or diagnostic modalities. Approximately one in two women know about possible BCa treatment. Less than one in three women practice regular BSE, and less than one in five women have ever undergone a CBE.

Abstract:Background: Breast self-examination (BSE) is a preventive and easy way for people to keep an eye on the health of their breasts. People who routinely examine their breasts may be able to identify changes or abnormalities at an early stage, which may help in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. This self-care routine encourages an active approach to breast health and actively participate in their own well-being. Objectives of the study were assessment of the knowledge and attitude on breast self-examination among female college students, to assess the major barrier to perform breast self-examination, and to assess the impact of pharmacist mediated education program on breast cancer. Methods: This study is an interventional cross-sectional community based-survey. 1007 students’ female college students at Adichuchanagiri University in B. G. Nagar belonging to 18-33 years were chosen at random using stratified sampling. Knowledge, attitude on breast cancer. Data was analyzed using statistical package for the social science (SPSS) version 25. Results: In pre-test out of 1007 students 251 students had good knowledge about breast self-examination. In post-test 1006 members had good knowledge about breast self-examination. In our study statistical relation found between pre and post questionnaires (p=0.001). Conclusions: The study emphasizes how important it is to launch educational programs to increase awareness of breast self-examination. Additionally, awareness needs to be raised by removing known barriers. It is important to encourage women in the community to self-examine their breasts and to report any changes to a doctor as soon as possible.

Abstract:Summary The temporal relationship between virus production and interferon biosynthesis was studied in L cells infected with NDV (Roakin strain). The results indicate that this strain of NDV inefficiently replicates progeny virus and that viral directed protein synthesis (hemagglutinin) is significantly depressed in L cells. These latter findings which are in contradistinction to the observations of others who used the Beaudette and Italien strains of NDV, reflect a primary difference in the characteristics of NDV strains. Evidence is also presented which indicates interferon appears very late in the replication cycle of the virus. These data substantiate the notion that interferon is not responsible for the abortive nature of viral replication.

Abstract:Women are blessed with a kind heart, a sea of love, and a bundle of affection. They are, undoubtedly, a symbol of love and a pillar of strength. They are always there, like a beacon in the night. A woman is not only beautiful, but, a woman is a companion to a man, family and society given by God Almighty. Yes, women are indeed God’s most beautiful creation. Every woman should know this, and should live up to it. Women should respect themselves. Today, sadly, things have changed. Many women have no sense of their health and their wellness. Cancer has become one of the ten leading causes of death in India. According to Indian Council of Medical Research there are nearly 1.5-2 million cancer cases at any given point of time. Over 7 lakh new cases of cancer and 3 lakh deaths occur annually due to cancer. Nearly 15 lakh patients require facilities for diagnosis, treatment and follow up at a given time.3 The incidence of breast cancer is rising in every country of the world especially in developing countries such as India. This is because more and more women in India are beginning to work outside their homes which allow the various risk factors of breast cancer to come into play. These include late age at first childbirth, fewer children and shorter duration of breast-feeding.4 Breast cancer has increased incidence of among women residing in metropolitan cities. Statistically, breast cancer is supposed to be more common among unmarried women; those who are married, but have not had children; and those who have had children, but did not breast feed their babies. It is also related with smoking, alcohol drinking and high fat intake to the causation of breast cancer and this probably explains its etiological relationship to a modern lifestyle and environment.5 Materials and Methods: Descriptive survey design is selected using convenient sampling and 60 working women were selected as sample. A structured questionnaire is used to assess the knowledge of the working women regarding breast cancer. The questionnaire consisted of two parts: Part –A to collect the demographic data, Part-B consisting of questions regarding the various aspects of knowledge about breast cancer. Results: Major findings of the study revealed that the majority of 50%women belonged to the age group of 41-50 yrs, 75% women are married 50% are graduate, majority (40%) of women had two children and 40 never breast fed majority of women (40%) had a family monthly income of Rs. 20001-30000, and had no history of breast cancer running in the family. The mean knowledge score was 5.7 (SD  2.47) and 22% of the study population had poor knowledge regarding breast cancer. Demographic variables like age, marital status educational status, duration of breast feeding and family history were associated with the level of knowledge. A self-instructional module was prepared for use as a teaching aid and found effective with‘t’ value 17.77 at p<0.01 level. Conclusion: After the detailed analysis of the study findings showed that the earlier studies done on the knowledge of women regarding breast cancer. There is lack of knowledge even in the educated women regarding breast cancer. It is the responsibility of all the nursing educators, administrators and policy makers to find out the barriers in the gain of knowledge and should try to remove them and to develop strategies which can make emphasis on prevention and early detection of diseases
Breast screening practices of 35-65 years old women - A cross-sectional survey in Alappuzha, Kerala, India

Abstract:Background: Enhancing cancer literacy, promoting early detection, and avoiding treatment delays are essential for reducing breast cancer mortality and ensuring a good quality of life among women in less developed countries. The present paper describes the breast screening practices of women in the Alappuzha district of Kerala state, India. Materials and methods: A multi-stage cluster sampling method was used to select study participants. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, entered using Kobo Toolbox, and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics-25 for Windows. The proportions of women who practiced breast examinations were estimated with 95% confidence intervals. The Chi-square test was used to test the associations, and binary logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios. Results: Among 320 women, 55% were less than 50 years old, 45% had higher secondary education or above, and six were already diagnosed with breast cancer (1.9%, 95% CI: 0.4%-3.4%). Of the 314 women, 73.2% were practicing breast self-examination (95% CI: 68.4%-78.1%), and 25.2% ever attended clinical breast examination (95% CI: 20.4%-30.0%). Working/retired/self-employed women with higher secondary education and above had almost 10 times higher odds (OR = 10, 95% CI: 3.35-29.86) of practicing breast self-examination (BSE) compared to homemakers or women working under rural employment schemes with a low level of education. Conclusion: A higher percentage of women practicing BSE and clinical breast examination (CBE) in the present study indicates that women in this population are more concerned about breast cancer. Women should be educated more on the symptoms and risk factors, the proper ways of practicing BSE, and the importance of consulting a health practitioner for CBE. Also, it is crucial to ensure that awareness and screening programs reach marginalized women.
Knowledge, attitude, and practice towards breast self-examination among women: a web based community study

Abstract:Background: The most common form of cancer among women is breast cancer in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate women in Saudi Arabia's Asir Region, on their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding breast self-examination (BSE). Methods: The research was carried out cross-sectional and conducted from October 2023 to June 2024 in Saudi Arabia's Asir province. Results: Out of 397 study participants, 89 (22.4%) had good knowledge, and 308 (77.6%) had poor knowledge; 185 (46.6%) had a positive attitude, and 212 (53.4%) had a negative attitude 24 (6%) had good practice 373 (94%) had poor practice about breast BSE. According to study participants, social media, 204 (51.4%), radio, television, and newspapers were the best places to learn about BSE. In this study, 316 (79.6%) had heard of BSE. 230 (57.9%) stated that breast cancer patient's likelihood of survival increases with early detection. Only 231 (58.2%) and 247 (62.2%) agreed that breast cancer is indicated by changes in the color and shape of the breast and retraction/discharge of the breasts, respectively. Out of 147, 24 (16.3%) self-examined just one week after each menstruation. Single (OR = 6.259; 95% CI = 1.790–21.887, p = 0.004) and married (OR = 4.923; 95% CI = 1.509–16.056, p = 0.008), Single (OR = 2.736; 95% CI = 1.248–6.000, p = 0.012) and married (OR = 3.176; 95% CI = 1.734–5.817, p = 0.00) were significantly associated with good knowledge and attitude of BSE, respectively. Illiterates (OR = 0.233; 95% CI = 0.060–0.895, p = 0.034), pre-university (OR = 0.222; 95% CI = 0.092–0.538, p = 0.001), Illiterates (OR = 0.293; 95% CI = 0.114–0.755, p = 0.011), pre-university (OR = 0.462; 95% CI = 0.271–0.788, p = 0.005) are less likely to have good knowledge and attitude compared to college and university educated. Conclusion: The study revealed that few women have good knowledge, attitudes, and practices among BSE. In this study, attitude level is high in comparison to knowledge and practice. However, 94% never practiced at all. It is strongly advised that a focus be placed on improving women's KAP regarding BSE, as well as BSE educational programs in universities and more community service activities such as health campaigns in public places.

Abstract:Breast cancer is the highest public detected cancer among female population in the majority of countries worldwide. Breast self-examination (BSE) is a useful screening tool to empower women and raise awareness about their breast tissues and help detect any breast abnormalities when they occur. This study aimed to assess the level of female university students’ knowledge and practice of BSE. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge about breast cancer and related items, and an observation checklist was used to test practicing BSE using a breast simulator. Eighty-six students participated in the study, 58.1% studying nursing and 41.9% studying clinical nutrition in the third (40.7%) or the fourth level (59.3%). Of them, 24.4% had previous family history of breast cancer. The majority of the students (80.2%) had previous information about breast cancer acquired from different sources, university studies (57%), the Internet (45%), and social media (41%). Findings showed good scores (≥70%) regarding signs and symptoms and risk factors of breast cancer; however, low knowledge scores (<70%) were detected regarding general knowledge about breast cancer disease, methods of early detection and management, and applying steps of practicing BSE. Roughly all the students (96.5%) have heard about BSE, and 69.8% knew the time to do BSE; however, only 31.4% practice it regularly. Three barriers to practice were dominant among students who do not have a breast problem (39.7%), do not know how to do it (37.9%), and being busy 31%. On the other hand, breast cancer early detection purpose and the presence of family history of breast cancer were considered facilitators to regular practice BSE. A statistically significant relationship existed between knowledge about the steps of applying the BSE and regular practicing. A training program should be implemented to increase the level of awareness about BC and practicing BSE.

Abstract:Paraganglia found in the subserosa of nine of ten surgically removed gallbladders had morphologic features and staining characteristics similar to those of other sites. Although they were not difficult to locate in subserial sections, their sparseness and smallness explains the rarity with which they have been encountered in the routine histologic gallbladder examination. The strong, finely granular argyrophilia of the chief cell cytoplasm in all of the glomera studied offer a simple means of identifying them when only a portion of the structure is viewed.

Abstract:To investigate the knowledge of breast cancer among medical, paramedical and general population of women participants. A prospective observational questionnaire survey was carried out in a tertiary care teaching hospital in northern Karnataka for a period of six months with220 participants. Interviewer administered questionnaire was used. Data obtained was analysed using descriptive statistics. Out of 220 women, 31.36% were medical, 20.92% paramedical and 47.72% general. Almost, 94.20% of medical participants believed breast cancer as inherited. Notably, general group considered trauma(74.28%) and diet (73.33%) as major risk factors. Majority of medical and paramedical women thought lump in the breast as the initial sign of Breast Cancer. Awareness regarding mammography and biopsy in general population was 64.76% and 52.38% respectively. Moreover, 95.5% of medical women and all of the paramedical women thought that chemical / radiotherapy was the best treatment. Breast cancer knowledge and awareness was less among the general women. There is a need of developing effective interventional programs to educate women about breast cancer. Keywords: Awareness, Breast Cancer, Knowledge, Risk factors.
