Abstract:Pulsed magnetic field gradient stimulated echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements are reported for the steady-state flow and diffusion of two and three phases (water, dodecane, N2 gas) within a sample of a Fontainebleau sandstone. The stimulated echo dependence on the gradient pulse area, q, is used to derive the displacement probability, PΔ(X) for fixed observation times Δ, with the displacements X being measured along the macroscopic pressure gradient. An extensive range of NMR experiments was carried out, starting with single-phase flow of either water (an aqueous solution of NaCl 3% w/v) or oil (dodecane) for various relative saturation states. Following these experiments, PΔ(X) were acquired for water and oil when both phases were forced to flow through the sandstone. Finally, NMR measurements were performed in which three phases (oil, water and N2 gas) were flowing simultaneously. Using the NMR data it was possible to evaluate the physical importance of parameters such as wettability, spreading and phase saturations on the transport phenomena. To our knowledge, these experiments represent the first comprehensive NMR study of multiphase flow in porous media, and the extent of the information obtained is providing a strong experimental basis to validate and develop accurate modelling of fluid transport in porous solids.

Abstract:The evaluation of flow dynamics in fractured shale oil reservoirs presents significant challenges due to the complex pore configurations and high organic material concentration. Conventional methods for petrophysical and fluid dynamic evaluations are insufficient in addressing these complexities. However, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology is an effective technique for quantitatively delineating fluid micro-transport properties across the reservoir core. This study presents an experimental methodology rooted in NMR technology to quantify the flow capabilities within the shale oil matrix. This approach incorporates high-pressure saturation flow experiments across seven distinct core samples to gauge the micro-transport phenomena of fluids across various pore dimensions. The results revealed that under high-pressure saturation, shale cores devoid of fractures demonstrated an average crude oil saturation rate of merely 19.44%. Cores with evident stratification exhibited a 16.18% increase in flow capacity compared to their non-stratified counterparts. The flow dynamics within these shale reservoirs exhibited a range of behaviors, from non-linear to linear. In lower-permeability zones, non-linear patterns became increasingly apparent. An NMR T2 spectrum analysis was used to identify the minimum effective pore size conducive to shale oil flow within the matrix, which was between 8 and 10 nanometers. These insights provide a foundation for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind oil and gas migration in fractured shale oil matrices, offering valuable insight into their extractive potential.

Abstract:We imaged the steady state flow of brine and decane in Bentheimer sandstone. We devised an experimental method based on differential imaging to examine how flow rate impacts impact the pore-scale distribution of fluids during coinjection. This allows us to elucidate flow regimes (connected, or breakup of the nonwetting phase pathways) for a range of fractional flows at two capillary numbers, Ca, namely 3.0 × 10-7 and 7.5 × 10-6. At the lower Ca, for a fixed fractional flow, the two phases appear to flow in connected unchanging subnetworks of the pore space, consistent with conventional theory. At the higher Ca, we observed that a significant fraction of the pore space contained sometimes oil and sometimes brine during the 1 h scan: this intermittent occupancy, which was interpreted as regions of the pore space that contained both fluid phases for some time, is necessary to explain the flow and dynamic connectivity of the oil phase; pathways of always oil-filled portions of the void space did not span the core. This phase was segmented from the differential image between the 30 wt % KI brine image and the scans taken at each fractional flow. Using the grey scale histogram distribution of the raw images, the oil proportion in the intermittent phase was calculated. The pressure drops at each fractional flow at low and high flow rates were measured by high-precision differential pressure sensors. The relative permeabilities and fractional flow obtained by our experiment at the mm-scale compare well with data from the literature on cm-scale samples.

Abstract:We use fast synchrotron X-ray microtomography to understand three-phase flow in mixed-wet porous media to design either enhanced permeability or capillary trapping. The dynamics of these phenomena are of key importance in subsurface hydrology, carbon dioxide storage, oil recovery, food and drug manufacturing, and chemical reactors. We study the dynamics of a water-gas-water injection sequence in a mixed-wet carbonate rock. During the initial waterflooding, water displaced oil from pores of all size, indicating a mixed-wet system with local contact angles both above and below90 degrees. When gas was injected, gas displaced oil preferentially with negligible displacement of water. This behavior is explained in terms of the gas pressure needed for invasion. Overall, gas behaved as the most nonwetting phase with oil as the most wetting phase; however, pores of all size were occupied by oil, water, and gas, as a signature of mixed-wet media. Thick oil wetting layers were observed, which increased oil connectivity and facilitated its flow during gas injection. A chase waterflooding resulted in additional oil flow, while gas was trapped by oil and water. Furthermore, we quantified the evolution of the surface areas and both Gaussian and the total curvature, from which capillary pressure could be estimated. These quantities are related to the Minkowski functionals which quantify the degree of connectivity and trapping. The combination of water and gas injection, under mixed-wet immiscible conditions, leads to both favorable oil flow and significant trapping of gas, which is advantageous for storage applications.

Abstract:Based on the mechanics of fluids in porous media and the continuum mechanics,a continuum theory of multiphase porous media is developed to analyze the propagation of elastic waves in a porous medium saturated by a mixture of two immiscible,viscousc,ompressible fluids.The behavior of porous media can be described by three equations of motion,two continuity equations of flow,and a supplementary equation that describes the constitutive relationships.A closed-form solution is derived for a fully coupled model considering the capillary pressure and irreducible/residual saturation,which demonstrates the existence of three types of compressional waves and one type of shear wave.The theoretical results are plotted and compared with the experimental data available in the previous studies.This solution is highly versatile in that it considers compression of the solid grain,compression of both pore fluids,deformation of the porous skeleton,and spatial damping.In addition,all the material parameters in this model are measurable.

Abstract:We identify a distinct two-phase flow invasion pattern in a mixed-wet porous medium. Time-resolved high-resolution synchrotron X-ray imaging is used to study the invasion of water through a small rock sample filled with oil, characterized by a wide non-uniform distribution of local contact angles both above and below 90 ° . The water advances in a connected front, but throats are not invaded in decreasing order of size, as predicted by invasion percolation theory for uniformly hydrophobic systems. Instead, we observe pinning of the three-phase contact between the fluids and the solid, manifested as contact angle hysteresis, which prevents snap-off and interface retraction. In the absence of viscous dissipation, we use an energy balance to find an effective, thermodynamic, contact angle for displacement and show that this angle increases during the displacement. Displacement occurs when the local contact angles overcome the advancing contact angles at a pinned interface: it is wettability which controls the filling sequence. The product of the principal interfacial curvatures, the Gaussian curvature, is negative, implying well-connected phases which is consistent with pinning at the contact line while providing a topological explanation for the high displacement efficiencies in mixed-wet media.

Abstract:It is of great importance to study the CO2-oil two-phase flow characteristic and displacement front behavior in porous media, for understanding the mechanisms of CO2 enhanced oil recovery. In this work, we carried out near miscible CO2 flooding experiments in decane saturated synthetic sandstone cores to investigate the displacement front characteristic by using magnetic resonance imaging technique. Experiments were done in three consolidated sandstone cores with the permeabilities ranging from 80 to 450mD. The oil saturation maps and the overall oil saturation during CO2 injections were obtained from the intensity of magnetic resonance imaging. Finally the parameters of the piston-like displacement fronts, including the front velocity and the front geometry factor (the length to width ratio) were analyzed. Experimental results showed that the near miscible vertical upward displacement is instable above the minimum miscible pressure in the synthetic sandstone cores. However, low permeability can restrain the instability to some extent.

Abstract:The study of immiscible fluid displacement between aqueous-phase liquids and non-aqueous-phase liquids in porous media is of great importance to oil recovery, groundwater contamination, and underground pollutant migration. Moreover, the attendant viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces are essential to describing the two-phase flows. In this study, magnetic resonance imaging was used to experimentally examine the detailed effects of the viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces on water–oil flows through a vertical straight capillary, bifurcate channel, and monolayered glass-bead pack. Water flooding experiments were performed at atmospheric pressure and 37.8°C, and the evolution of the distribution and saturation of the oil as well as the characteristics of the two-phase flow were investigated and analyzed. The results showed that the flow paths, i.e., the fingers of the displacing phase, during the immiscible displacement in the porous medium were determined by the viscous, capillary, and gravitational forces as well as the sizes of the pores and throats. The experimental results afford a fundamental understanding of immiscible fluid displacement in a porous medium.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the flow characteristics of water–sand mixture in fractured porous media through a series of laboratory experiments. The experiments focus on examining the transport characteristics of water–sand mixture with varying grain sizes, glass bead gradations, sand mass fraction and outlet conditions. The results show that an increase in grain size causes a more pronounced nonlinear variation in large pressure gradient, resulting in a predominantly longitudinal flow pattern with a 'multi-arc' flow state. Water–sand mixture with various glass bead gradations exhibits aggregation effects in porous media. The discrete element method–computational fluid dynamics (DEM–CFD) two-way coupling method is used to simulate water–sand flow in fractured porous media using the three-dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D). The simulation shows that the fracture has a more significant constraint effect than the pore due to the significant variation in internal contact force. A response surface optimization method is utilized to establish multi-factor response models. The correlation between flow, fracture inlet pressure, pore inlet pressure and water–sand mass is analyzed to predict accurately the variation of water–sand outflow. Based on the least square method, multivariate regression fitting equations are developed using sand grain size, gradation and sand mass fraction to predict the dynamics of fluidity I and non-Darcy factor β . The equations are found to be effective in forecasting the dynamics of these factors and provides valuable insights for assessing. These results can be used to predict the movement behavior of fluid in fracture-pore composite media and provide theoretical guidance for preventing disasters such as water–sand inrush.

Abstract:The experimental determination of representative capillary pressure curves as a function of saturation is of utmost importance for the determination of the initial reservoir fluid distribution and subsequent flow properties under production. We design an experimental procedure to image porous plate capillary drainage using X-ray micro-tomography based on differential imaging for a laminated sandstone micro core (4.86 mm in diameter). The pore structure, including the sub-resolution micro pores, was characterised and quantified using both the initial dry scan and the scan fully saturated with Potassium Iodide (KI) doped brine (30 wt%). During the porous plate capillary drainage, nitrogen (N2) was injected at a constant pressure and the capillary pressure was controlled by the pressure drop through the core sample. A full range of capillary pressure curve against saturation from 0 to 1.17 MPa is provided from the image analysis and is compared with the Special Core Analysis (SCAL) for the original core (35 mm in diameter). We are also able to discern that brine remained predominantly within the sub-resolution micro-pores, such as regions of fine lamination. Moreover, brine covering the rock grain surface and in the corners of the macro-pores can also be visualised.

Abstract:We use synchrotron X-ray micro-tomography to investigate the displacement dynamics during three-phase—oil, water and gas—flow in a hydrophobic porous medium. We observe a distinct gas invasion pattern, where gas progresses through the pore space in the form of disconnected clusters mediated by double and multiple displacement events. Gas advances in a process we name three-phase Haines jumps, during which gas re-arranges its configuration in the pore space, retracting from some regions to enable the rapid filling of multiple pores. The gas retraction leads to a permanent disconnection of gas ganglia, which do not reconnect as gas injection proceeds. We observe, in situ, the direct displacement of oil and water by gas as well as gas–oil–water double displacement. The use of local in situ measurements and an energy balance approach to determine fluid–fluid contact angles alongside the quantification of capillary pressures and pore occupancy indicate that the wettability order is oil–gas–water from most to least wetting. Furthermore, quantifying the evolution of Minkowski functionals implied well-connected oil and water, while the gas connectivity decreased as gas was broken up into discrete clusters during injection. This work can be used to design CO2 storage, improved oil recovery and microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Summary An uncommon facet of formation evaluation is the assessment of flow-related in-situ properties of rocks. Most of the models used to describe two-phase flow properties of porous rocks assume homogeneous and/or isotropic media, which is hardly the case with actual reservoir rocks, regardless of scale; carbonates and grain-laminated sandstones are but two common examples of this situation. The degree of spatial complexity of rocks and its effect on the mobility of hydrocarbons are of paramount importance for the description of multiphase fluid flow in most contemporary reservoirs. There is thus a need for experimental and numerical methods that integrate all salient details about fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions. Such hybrid, laboratory-simulation projects are necessary to develop realistic models of fractional flow in complex rocks, i.e., saturation-dependent capillary pressure and relative permeability. Furthermore, these two crucial properties are usually measured independently. Capillary pressure is typically assessed using static measurements and unrealistic pressure conditions, whereas relative permeability is evaluated dynamically. Consequently, the disparity between the nature of the two experimental procedures often results in a potentially significant loss of information. We document a new high-resolution visualization technique that provides experimental insight to quantify fluid saturation patterns in heterogeneous rocks which allow for the simultaneous and dynamic evaluation of two-phase flow properties. The experimental apparatus consists of an X-ray microfocus scanner and an automated syringe pump. Rather than using traditional cylindrical cores, thin rectangular rock samples are examined, their thickness being one order of magnitude smaller than the remaining two dimensions. During the experiment, the core is scanned quasicontinuously while the fluids are being injected, allowing for time-lapse visualization of the flood front. Numerical simulations are then conducted to match the experimental data and quantify effective saturation-dependent relative permeability and capillary pressure. The experimental results indicate that flow patterns and in-situ saturations are highly dependent on the nature of the heterogeneity and bedding-plane orientation during both imbibition and drainage cycles. In homogeneous rocks, fluid displacement approaches piston-like behavior. The assessment of capillary pressure and relative permeability is performed by examining the time-lapse water saturation profiles resulting from fluid displacement. In spatially complex rocks, high-resolution time-lapse images reveal preferential flow paths along high-permeability sections and a lowered sweep efficiency. Abstract:We applied three-dimensional X-ray microtomography to image a capillary drainage process (0-1000 kPa) in a cm-scale heterogeneous laminated sandstone containing three distinct regions with different pore sizes to study the capillary pressure. We used differential imaging to distinguish solid, macro pore and five levels of sub-resolution pore phases associated with each region. The brine saturation distribution was computed based on average CT values. The non-wetting phase displaced the wetting phase in order of pore size and connectivity. The drainage capillary pressure in the highly heterogeneous rock was dependent on the capillary pressures in the individual regions as well as distance to the boundary between regions. The complex capillary pressure distribution has important implications for accurate water saturation estimation, gas and/or oil migration and the capillary rise of water in heterogeneous aquifers.

Abstract:Recharge dynamics within the vadose zone (variable saturation conditions) of consolidated fractured rock formations are an ongoing challenge when it comes to process understanding and predictive modeling. The proper delineation of fast (macropores, fractures, conduits) and slow (matrix) flow components in these systems and their interaction with each other remains a complex puzzle and holds a key to enhance process-based infiltration models.We conducted laboratory and field experiments to study infiltration dynamics through porous-fractured systems. Laboratory experiments were carried out with analogue fracture networks on meter scale. Orthogonal networks were created by placing equally sized blocks with a constant gap between to glass plates, which were mount by metal clamps. Vertical flow through different network configurations (apertures, intersection types, topology, flow rates) was studied for (1) porous media (sandstone) and (2) non-porous media (glass) to delineate the control of network features on flow dynamics, as well as the effect of fracture-matrix interaction. Matrix imbibition was found to strongly control the preferential flow velocity during flow path evolution. Higher infiltration rates lead to more by-pass at fracture intersections, whereas low infiltration rates favor flow partitioning into horizontal fractures. Vertical flow progression within the non-porous network is significantly faster due to the lack of imbibition. Semi-analytical tools, such as transfer functions, and source-responsive dual-domain models are tested to reproduce the experimental data and to incorporate key features of fracture networks in future modeling approaches. We additionally obtained experimental data from infiltration dynamics at porous-fractured field sites on meter scale to compare them to the well-controlled laboratory experiments and to evaluate the applicability of the results to actual field processes.

Abstract:Infiltration processes in fractured consolidated aquifer systems often exhibit complex gravity-driven flow features and hence tend to develop preferential flow paths along fracture network which contribute to rapid mass fluxes. This behavior is often difficult to model with classical methods such as the Richards equation, as a variety of interacting flow modes, ranging from free-surface flows over droplet and and rivulet flows, control the mass partitioning processes at fracture intersections and within fractures. Here we demonstrate with two different types of laboratory experiments how the complexity of such flows affects the discharge behavior: (1) In order to isolate the mass partitioning process at fracture intersections we use custom-made acrylic cubes to establish a set of vertical fractures (free-surface, bounded by one side only) intersected by horizontal fractures. In order to control the prevailing flow mode we use a multichannel dispenser and set flowrates to critical thresholds for each regime. We then calculate normalized horizontal fracture inflow rates and delineate classical Washburn-type behavior in order to obtain an analytical transfer function for the given system and extended fracture cascades. (2) In order to study the effect of a porous matrix adjacent to the fractures we carried out quasi-2D laboratory experiments of infiltration into complex fracture networks using Seeberger sandstone slices. The system allows to study both the onset of preferential fracture flow dynamics as well as the porous matrix imbibition under dynamics conditions. To study the effect of geometry on discharge dynamics we modify fracture apertures as well as fracture offsets, i.e., the geometry of the fracture intersections. Results show that, despite the complex internal flow dynamics, clear scaling patterns can be observed and the geometrical characteristics are imprinted into the outflow behavior.
Steady-state Two-phase Relative Permeability Measurements in Proppant-packed Rough-walled Fractures

Abstract:Understanding multiphase flow in fractures filled with minerals and proppants is vital in various subsurface applications. Limited experimental data have led to reliance on correlations lacking physical basis. We conducted experiments to characterize relative permeability in rough-walled fractures packed with unconsolidated porous media. We tested fractures packed with water-wet 40/70 sand (silica) and surface-coated ceramic proppants. Brine and mineral oil were used as the wetting and non-wetting fluid phases, respectively. Steady-state (SS) drainage (non-wetting-phase displacing wetting-phase) and imbibition (wetting-phase displacing non-wetting-phase) tests were performed under a wide range of saturation histories (full-cycle and scanning-curves) to study relative permeability hysteresis of the propped fractures. Every SS drainage or imbibition test consisted of several discrete points at which fluid saturations and the corresponding relative permeability were measured by varying the fractional flow rates of fluids whilst maintaining a constant total flow rate. We analyzed residual non-wetting phase saturations and relative permeability trends to understand two-phase flow behavior in each proppant pack. High-resolution x-ray microtomography was used to understand the pore-scale topology, wettability, and to provide insights about the pore-scale displacement mechanisms involved in this study. The results showed that commonly used models to estimate relative permeabilities of fractures significantly overestimated the SS brine and oil relative permeabilities (denoted as k rw and k ro ) measured in this study. Further analysis unveiled that the k ro values during imbibition exceeded their drainage counterparts in both proppants, the ceramic proppant exhibited a lower initial water saturation and a higher end-point k ro permeability at the end of the drainage displacement, as well as higher k rw across all flooding processes. Updated fitting parameters for a Brooks-Corey-type relative permeability correlation are introduced. This study presents improved insights, extensive experimentally generated relative permeability data, and an updated relative permeability correlation, which can be collectively utilized to reduce uncertainties associated with continuum-scale forecasts of multiphase flow behavior in fractured subsurface formations.

Abstract:An accurate understanding on hydraulic behaviors of fluid flow through fractured rocks is of central importance for both underground resources exploitation and CO2 geological sequestration. Despite its importance, fluid flow through fractures surrounded by permeable matrix is rarely investigated. Here, this study aims to explore fluid flow through fractures surrounded by permeable host rocks using a combined experimental and numerical approach. In particular, core-flooding experiments were sequentially conducted on both intact and fractured cores subjected to different rock types, under varying confining stress and fracture roughness. According to the experimental results, fracture permeability decreases rapidly with increasing confining stress and fracture roughness, while matrix permeability is less affected by confining pressure, resulting in an increment in contributions of matrix flow to the overall flow with increased confining pressure. In addition, numerical simulations were performed on digital fractured rocks with a broadened range of roughness from 2.58 to 18.2, and under confining pressure ranging from 2 MPa to 53 MPa. The fluid flows within matrix and fracture were assumed to follow linear Darcy's law and nonlinear Forchheimer's law, respectively. The simulated results also show that Km/Kf increases with the increase of confining pressure, reflecting the enhancement in contributions of matrix permeability to the overall transportation. If Km/Kf = 0.1 is defined as a threshold over which matrix permeability should not be ignored, then the critical confining pressure of 18 MPa, 20 MPa, and 46 MPa is determined for mudstone, sandstone and limestone, respectively. In addition, the fluid flow through rough-walled fractures is observed to be susceptible to normal loading and fracture roughness, which directly alters flow paths within the fractures. With an increment in confining pressure and fracture roughness, the contact area between rough fracture surfaces grows, promoting flow tortuosity and generating eddies inside fracture, which consequently increases flow resistance and hence weakens fracture permeability. Ultimately, by fitting the simulated data, an empirical equation linking fracture permeability with confining stress, fracture roughness and hydraulic gradient is provided. This study provides quantitative characterizations on fluid flow through fractures accounting for permeable matrix, and thus can potentially improve the accuracy in predicting hydraulic properties of fractured rocks.
