Abstract:The complex fracture-matrix structure of the unconventional reservoir will significantly affect the gas seepage, energy conduction and the extraction properties. A good understanding of the underlying mechanisms controlling such a process is essential for a clear description of the reservoir gas extraction problems. In this study, we propose a fractal dual-porosity permeability model through analytical derivation, and the fracture-matrix microstructural properties of the reservoir is characterized by the following structural parameters: (1) density of natural fractures ( D f ), (2) density of matrix pores ( D p ), (3) maximum natural fracture length ( l max ), and (4) maximum matrix pore radius ( λ max ). These structural parameters evolve with the effective stress through porosity under the combination of hydrological-thermal–mechanical interactions, reservoir deformation, fracture-matrix interactions, and gas adsorption-desorption effect. The results indicate that: (1) the fractal model proposed in this paper is capable of better characterizing the reservoir microstructure at the fracture-matrix scale compared with the homogeneous models (9.45 and 78.07% enhancement in permeability of the fracture system whilst 10.46% and 86.74% enhancement in permeability of the matrix system); (2) the effective stress due to the evolution of microstructure has a significant contribution to reservoir temperature and gas pressure; (3) adsorption-desorption and thermal expansion effects dominate the unconventional reservoir structure; (4) greater initial pressure causes clearer effect on the overall fracture-matrix structure. This study might shed light on the investigation of the gas seepage property and improve the recovery of the unconventional reservoir.

Abstract:Shales are low‐permeability caprocks that confine fluid, such as CO2, nuclear waste, and hydrogen, in storage formations. Stress‐induced fractures in shale caprocks provide pathways for fluid to leak and potentially contaminate fresh water aquifers. Fractured shales are also increasingly considered as resources for CO2 sequestration, enhanced geothermal, and unconventional energy recovery. Injecting reactive fluids into shales introduces chemical disequilibrium, causing an onset of a series of dissolution, precipitation, and fines mobilization mechanisms. The reactions have rapid kinetics and significant impact on porosity and permeability; consequently, flow and storage properties of caprocks. While previous research has explored the separate effects of these reactions, this study aims to uncover their simultaneous occurrence and collective influence. This study unveils these highly coupled transport and reactivity mechanisms by tracking and visualizing the reaction‐induced alterations in the matrix, microcracks, and fractures of shales over time. We conducted brine injection experiments sequentially at pH 4 and 2 in a naturally fractured Wolfcamp shale sample while simultaneously imaging the dynamic processes using X‐ray computed tomography (CT). CT images are validated by finer resolution images obtained using micro‐CT and scanning electron microscopy. We also tracked the sample permeability and fluid chemistry using brine permeability and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, respectively. Findings show that fluid primarily flowed through fractures, dissolving reactive minerals and mobilizing fines on fracture surfaces. Dissolution of fracture asperities under confining stress resulted in the closing of fractures. Clogging in narrow fracture pathways, caused by fines accumulation, diverted fluid flow into matrix pores.

Abstract:An accurate understanding on hydraulic behaviors of fluid flow through fractured rocks is of central importance for both underground resources exploitation and CO2 geological sequestration. Despite its importance, fluid flow through fractures surrounded by permeable matrix is rarely investigated. Here, this study aims to explore fluid flow through fractures surrounded by permeable host rocks using a combined experimental and numerical approach. In particular, core-flooding experiments were sequentially conducted on both intact and fractured cores subjected to different rock types, under varying confining stress and fracture roughness. According to the experimental results, fracture permeability decreases rapidly with increasing confining stress and fracture roughness, while matrix permeability is less affected by confining pressure, resulting in an increment in contributions of matrix flow to the overall flow with increased confining pressure. In addition, numerical simulations were performed on digital fractured rocks with a broadened range of roughness from 2.58 to 18.2, and under confining pressure ranging from 2 MPa to 53 MPa. The fluid flows within matrix and fracture were assumed to follow linear Darcy's law and nonlinear Forchheimer's law, respectively. The simulated results also show that Km/Kf increases with the increase of confining pressure, reflecting the enhancement in contributions of matrix permeability to the overall transportation. If Km/Kf = 0.1 is defined as a threshold over which matrix permeability should not be ignored, then the critical confining pressure of 18 MPa, 20 MPa, and 46 MPa is determined for mudstone, sandstone and limestone, respectively. In addition, the fluid flow through rough-walled fractures is observed to be susceptible to normal loading and fracture roughness, which directly alters flow paths within the fractures. With an increment in confining pressure and fracture roughness, the contact area between rough fracture surfaces grows, promoting flow tortuosity and generating eddies inside fracture, which consequently increases flow resistance and hence weakens fracture permeability. Ultimately, by fitting the simulated data, an empirical equation linking fracture permeability with confining stress, fracture roughness and hydraulic gradient is provided. This study provides quantitative characterizations on fluid flow through fractures accounting for permeable matrix, and thus can potentially improve the accuracy in predicting hydraulic properties of fractured rocks.

Abstract:Unconventional oil and gas production involves the use of acidic hydraulic fracturing fluids that interact with the rock matrix bordering the fractures. As a result, fracture permeability and mass transfer between the matrix and the fracture can be altered, affecting production performance. The evolution of the altered zones are controlled by the gradients of pH and concentrations of various species perpendicular to the fracture-matrix interface, mineral reactions in the matrix as the reactive fluid diffuse into the matrix, and potential mineral coating on the fracture surface where the matrix fluid and fracture fluid mix. In this study, we use reactive transport model to investigate the evolution of the altered zones bordering the fractures. The simulations are based on batch and fracture flow experiments of shales and syntheized hydraulic fracturing fluids. Through the simulations, we quantify the reaction front of different mineral phases and the change of local porosity, and examine their dependence on mineral composition and fluid chemistry. We also discuss the impacts of the altered zones on matrix diffusivity and fracture permeability.

Abstract:Newly developed oil fields are increasingly hosted in carbonate deposits, with these carbonate reservoirs being the subject of numerous studies. However, the efficiency of oil production in carbonate reservoirs is generally lower than that of sandstones. A key feature of carbonate deposits is the presence of fractures. Many characteristics of these fractures, including their size and spatial orientation, have been widely studied; however, some of the most important aspects that control the interactions between the rock matrix and fractures in these deposits are still not yet fully understood. This study investigates the interactions between the matrix and fractures in carbonate deposits using field data (well tests) that are supplemented by core studies and aims to investigate specific features that influence oil production from wells located in the porous and fracture–pore zones of carbonate reservoirs. The results show that fractures influence both initial and cumulative oil production. Differences in the behavior of open and partially filled fractures were also investigated, and the characteristics of interporosity flow between the matrix and fractures in the rock were determined through the application of processing well tests using the Warren–Root model and further analyzed using flow coefficients. A direct relationship between cumulative oil production and the interporosity flow between the matrix and fractures was identified, which confirms the influence of interporosity flow on bottomhole pressure. Consequently, bottomhole pressure should be considered to be a key parameter in determining the efficiency of oil production in fracture-pore carbonate reservoirs.

Abstract:Despite the impact that hydraulic fracturing has had on the energy sector, the physical mechanisms that control its efficiency and environmental impacts remain poorly understood in part because the length scales involved range from nanometres to kilometres. We characterize flow and transport in shale formations across and between these scales using integrated computational, theoretical and experimental efforts/methods. At the field scale, we use discrete fracture network modelling to simulate production of a hydraulically fractured well from a fracture network that is based on the site characterization of a shale gas reservoir. At the core scale, we use triaxial fracture experiments and a finite-discrete element model to study dynamic fracture/crack propagation in low permeability shale. We use lattice Boltzmann pore-scale simulations and microfluidic experiments in both synthetic and shale rock micromodels to study pore-scale flow and transport phenomena, including multi-phase flow and fluids mixing. A mechanistic description and integration of these multiple scales is required for accurate predictions of production and the eventual optimization of hydrocarbon extraction from unconventional reservoirs. Finally, we discuss the potential of CO 2 as an alternative working fluid, both in fracturing and re-stimulating activities, beyond its environmental advantages. Abstract:Hydraulic fracturing is a widely utilized technique for rock stimulation in geothermal and oil and gas operations. To fracture the rock, the pumped fluid pressure required should exceed the sum of the stresses at the injection point and the rock's mechanical strength. In scenarios where the rock is isotropic, hydraulic fractures typically propagate in directions perpendicular to the minimum principal stress. Contrary to this conventional understanding, our research, involving a series of true-triaxial hydraulic fracturing tests on the finely laminated Montney shale formation, demonstrates that this principle does not hold for transversally isotropic materials. Our experimental findings indicate that fractures in such materials occur along the bedding planes, aligning against the intermediate principal stress rather than the minimum principal stress. Based on these observations, we propose a conceptual model that integrates the in situ stresses with the tensile anisotropy of the rock. Additionally, in our experimental work, we saw that change in viscosity of the injected fluid greatly influences the fracture geometry, which can be used to engineer the fracture initiation and propagation as it seems to inhibit the parting of the beddings and to reorient the fracture along with the principal stresses.

Full-Sample X-ray Microcomputed Tomography Analysis of Supercritical CO 2 Fracturing in Tight Sandstone: Effect of Stress on Fracture Dynamics

Abstract:The commercial production from tight oil and gas reservoirs has been facilitated by the multistage hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells. This process typically requires the pumping of large amounts of slick water into the subsurface, and this could be challenging in areas with a limited supply of water. Despite the commercial success of hydraulic fracturing with water, it still faces the problem of clay swelling and potential contamination of underground water. This has led to research studies and field applications of liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) fracturing in unconventional oil and gas resources. Considering that the propagation and characteristics of these man-made fractures are controlled by the fracturing fluid and mechanical state of the reservoir, we performed a series of fracturing experiments on tight sandstones using water and SC-CO2 at different stress magnitudes. To explore the morphology of the fractures and quantify their attributes, we proposed a novel full-sample fracture analysis approach, which is based on microcomputed tomography (CT) imaging. The results of this study indicate that the breakdown pressure is a linear function of the minimum principal stress and tensile strength. We observe that the pattern and geometry of the fractures created from SC-CO2 fracturing is more complex than those of water fracturing under the same stress conditions. Our experimental results also indicate that smaller differential stresses lead to the creation of more fracture branches and that fracture propagation is significantly affected by the presence of initial bedding planes. Furthermore, our quantification of the fracture attributes (based on fracture extraction and digitization) indicates that SC-CO2 fracturing leads to the creation of more complex fractures with rougher surfaces than water fracturing. This experimental study proposes a new full-sample fracture quantification approach, which can be implemented to analyze fracture attributes precisely and effectively. The results from this work could provide insights and guidance for the field application of SC-CO2 fracturing in unconventional oil and gas resources.

Numerical Simulations of Geomechanical Deformation, Fluid Flow and Reactive Transport in Shale Rough-Walled Microfractures

Abstract:Improving hydrocarbon production with hydraulic fracturing from unconventional reservoirs requires investigating transport phenomena at the single fracture level. In this study, we simulated geomechanical deformation, fluid flow, and reactive transport to understand the effect of hydraulic fracturing treatment on permeability evolution in shale rough-walled fractures. Using concepts of fractional Brownian motion and surface roughness characterizations with laser profilometer, we first generated three rough-walled microfractures consistent with three laboratory experiments (i.e., E4, E5 and E6). After that, the generated microfractures were subjected to a confining pressure in accord with experimental conditions, and geomechanical deformation was simulated. We used the OpenFOAM software package to simulate the fluid flow and permeability. By comparing the simulated permeability values with the experimentally measured ones we found relative errors equal to 28, 15 and 200% respectively for the experiments E4, E5 and E6. After calibration, however, the relative error dropped below 4%. We next simulated the reactive transport using the GeoChemFOAM solver and investigated permeability evolution in the deformed microfractures. We found that after 10 hrs of reactive transport simulations, permeability increased by 47%, on average, in all cases studied here.

Abstract:Gas adsorption/desorption can result in swelling/shrinking of the matrix in fractured shale. The significant contrast in permeability between fractures and matrix results in an extended duration for the equilibration of the gas injection or depletion-created pressure difference. This spatially non-uniform pressure dissipation induces non-uniform deformations inside the matrix. We follow this response with carefully constrained laboratory measurements integrated with numerical modelling to explore the relation between the strain gradients that develop in the matrix adjacent to fractures and the evolution of permeability each under conditions of constant confining pressure. The microstructures of the sample were characterized by X-ray computed tomography, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and mercury injection capillary pressure porosimetry. A distributed array of strain gauges was attached to the matrix to directly measure the evolving strain. Then a 3D multiphysics numerical model was built to model the evolution of strain gradients from initial to ultimate equilibrium. The influence of these strain gradients on the evolution of fracture permeability is evaluated by a non-uniform strain-based permeability model. The results indicate that the swelling of the matrix near fractures can also compress the matrix away from the fracture under constant confining pressure conditions. Under the influence of the matrix–fracture interaction, a transient and complex distribution of strain gradients develops within the matrix.

Abstract:Quantitative characterization of shale gas flow in fractured shale is a key problem in shale gas extraction. In this study, 3D multi-scale structures in fractured shale were reconstructed, firstly, by X-ray micro-computerized tomography (CT), high-resolution scanning electron microscope (SEM), and fractal function. Then, a REV (representative elementary volume)-scale lattice Boltzmann (LB) model, considering Klinkenberg's effect and gas absorption, was built, and the effects of fracture complexity and gas pressure on shale gas flow and shale permeability were analyzed and studied quantitatively. The simulation results indicate that the gas flow behaviors in the fractured shale are related strongly to fracture morphology and gas pressure. The decreased fracture fractal dimension or increased complexity of the fracture network leads to increase in permeability of the fractured shale. The gas velocity in the shale matrix decreases with increasing fracture roughness. Increased fracture network connectivity contributes to the formation of local high-intensity velocity fields and the improvement of gas flow in the shale matrix. The gas rarefaction effect has a significant influence on gas flow in the fractured shale, and permeability of the fractured shale must be regarded as a dynamic shale reservoir parameter. The gas flow behavior in the fractured shale is more sensitive at low-pressure condition whereas the gas rarefaction effect is more sensitive to the fractured shale with highly rough fracture or low fracture connectivity.

Abstract:How to effectively and cleanly exploit unconventional resources is currently being widely concerned. Due to the unavoidable limitations of water-based fracturing, CO2 and N2 etc., are regarded as alternative fluids for some specific reservoirs such as the arid area or high clay swelling formation. To investigate the characteristics of fracture induced by nonaqueous fluid in unconventional tight formation, fracturing experiments on tight sandstone using different fluid of water, N2, liquid CO2(L-CO2) and supercritical CO2(SC-CO2) were conducted. A novel fracture analysis approach based on CT scanning is also proposed to quantitatively analyze the micromorphology of fractures including fracture network pattern, fractal dimension (FD), aperture, area ratio (AR) and fracture volume etc. Results show that water and N2 can only induce a relatively simple fracture pattern. Whereas, fractures induced by CO2-based fluid have more complex fracture geometry with many fracture branches and various propagation orientations. Quantitative analysis based on image processing and fracture reconstruction algorithm indicates that the CO2-based fluid has up to 4.4 times larger fracture-induced capacity and can create fracture with up to 2.6 times higher complexity and 23.4% higher roughness than that generated by water-based fracturing. Comparing to SC-CO2, L-CO2 and water, N2 has the least fracture-induced capacity (83% of water) and produces more smooth and uniform fractures. On the other hand, the distributions of deviation angle suggest that fracture propagation is not only influenced by stress state, but also significantly affected by the original bedding plane. This experimental study proposes a precise and effective approach for fracture characteristic quantification, which can be further implemented into fracture simulation model. It also provides theoretical reference and guidance for field operation of waterless fracturing in development of unconventional oil and gas.

Abstract:Summary The depletion of conventional reservoirs has led to increased interest in deep shale gas. Hydraulic fracturing addresses the challenge of developing low-permeability shale, involving hydro-mechanical coupling fracture propagation mechanics. Supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) has become a promising alternative to fracturing fluids due to its ability to be buried underground after use. The high temperature, pressure, and stress of deep shale lead to the flow of fracturing fluid to plastic deformation of rock, resulting in microfractures. In this paper, we simulate the fracture propagation process of deep shale fractured by SC-CO2 based on the coupling of the Darcy-Brinkman-Biot method, which adopts the Navier-Stokes-like equation to solve the free flow region, and the Darcy equation with Biot’s theory to solve flow in the matrix. To clearly probe the mechanism of deep fracturing from a microscopic perspective, the plastic rock property is taken into consideration. We investigate the effects of injection velocity, rock plastic yield stress, formation pressure, and gas slippage effect on fluid saturation and fracture morphology, and find that increasing the injection rate of fracturing fluid can form better extended fractures and complex fracture networks, improving the fracturing effect. Furthermore, we find that it is more appropriate to adopt SC-CO2 as a fracturing fluid alternative in deep shale with higher plastic yield stress due to higher CO2 saturation in the matrix, indicating greater carbon sequestration potential. High confining pressure promotes the growth of shear fractures, which are capable of more complex fracture profiles. The gas slip effect has a significant impact on the stress field while ignoring the flow field. This study sheds light on which deep shale gas reservoirs are appropriate for the use of SC-CO2 as a fracturing fluid and offers recommendations for how to enhance the fracturing effect at the pore scale.

Dynamic Response and Fractal Characteristics of a Pore-Fracture System in Ultralow Permeability Sandstone Based on Low-Field NMR

Abstract:Quantitative characterization of the dynamic evolution of the pore-fracture system subjected to the variation of in situ stress is critical to the production of crude oil and CO2 sequestration in an ultralow permeability reservoir. Combining the integrated method of low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and fractal characterization, the response of the geometry and petrophysical properties of sandstone to the change in confining stress from 0 to 32 MPa was investigated. In addition, a classification criterion for adsorption pore (AP), percolation pore (PP), and migration pore (MP) was proposed. The sizes of AP, PP, and MP were identified by the T2 spectra of 0–8.40 ms, 8.40–541.59 ms, and >541.59 ms. Compared with the percentage increase of the PP, a decrease in the AP and MP was observed with an increase in confining stress. Compared with the pore fracture of cap rock, reservoir rock, with an incremental PP of approximately 10%, showed a dynamic response to the increase in stress that is characterized by large shrinkage in the AP, slight decrease in the MP, obvious expansion of the PP, and small compressibility of the whole pore-fracture system. Pore fracture was mostly dominated by the AP and PP and had low heterogeneity characterized by low fractal dimension along with low porosity and high connectivity. For cap rock, two-stage heterogeneity for the PP space subjected to the compressing process was observed, and high porosity and low connectivity were presented.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Unconventional shale gas production is often characterized by a short period of high production followed by a rapid decline in the production rate. Given the high costs of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, it is critical to identify the mechanisms behind the production loss. The existing shale gas production models often assume constant matrix permeability. However, laboratory observations show that matrix permeability can decrease significantly with increasing effective stress, which highlights the necessity of considering the stress-dependent properties of shale matrix in production analysis. Moreover, the compaction of pore space will also increase the matrix permeability by enhancing the gas-slippage effect. In this paper, a matrix permeability model which couples the effect of pore volume compaction and non-Darcy slip flow is derived. Numerical simulations are conducted to understand the role of matrix permeability evolution during production. Changes of fractures’ permeability and contact area during depletion process are also taken into account. The results indicate that the loss of fracture permeability has a greater impact at the early stage of the depletion process, while matrix permeability evolution is more important for the long-term production.

Abstract:Many onshore oil fields currently adopt water flooding as a means to supplement reservoir energy. However, due to reservoir heterogeneity, significant differences in permeability exist not only between different reservoirs but also within the same reservoir across different planar orientations. After prolonged fluid flushing in the near-wellbore zone of injection wells, the resulting increased flow resistance between layers exacerbates inefficient and ineffective circulation. A considerable amount of remaining oil is left unexploited in untouched areas, significantly impacting the overall recovery. To investigate the multiscale plugging mechanisms of fracture-dominated pore channels in high-water-cut oil reservoirs and achieve efficient management of fractured large channels, this study explores the formation of the fracture-flushing zone-low saturation oil zone. A physical experimental model with fractures and high-intensity flushing is established to analyze changes in pore structure, mineral composition, residual oil distribution, and other characteristics at different positions near the fractures. The research aims to clarify the mechanism behind the formation of large channels with fracture structures. The results indicate that under high-intensity water flushing, cementing materials are washed away by the flowing water, clay particles are carried to the surface with the injected fluid, and permeability significantly increases, forming high-permeability zones with fracture structures. In the rock interior away from the fracture end, channels, corners, and clustered oil content noticeably decrease, while the content of film-like oil substantially increases, and clay minerals are not significantly washed away. Under strong flushing conditions, the number of residual clay particles near the fracture end is mainly influenced by flow velocity and flushing time; thus, the greater the flushing intensity, the faster the water flow, and the longer the flushing time, the fewer residual clay particles near the fracture end.

Abstract:Summary Unconventional reservoirs, such as shale-gas or tight oil reservoirs, are generally highly fractured (including hydraulic fractures and stimulated and nonstimulated natural fractures of various sizes) and embedded in low-permeability formations. One of the main production mechanisms in unconventional reservoirs is the flow exchange between matrix and fracture media. However, because of extremely low matrix permeability, the matrix/fracture exchange is very slow and the transient flow may last several years to tens of years, or almost the entire production life. The commonly used dual-porosity (DP) modeling approach involves a computation of pseudosteady-state matrix/fracture transfers with homogenized fluid and flow properties within the matrix medium. This kind of model clearly fails to handle the long-lasting matrix/fracture interaction in very-low-permeability reservoirs, especially for multiphase flow with phase-change problems. Moreover, a DP model is not adapted for the simulation of matrix/fracture exchange when fractures are described by a discrete-fracture network (DFN). This paper presents an embedded discrete-fracture model (EDFM) dependent on the multiple-interacting-continua (MINC) proximity function to overcome this insufficiency of the conventional DP model.

Abstract:A "permeability equilibration time" is typically assumed in interpreting permeability measurements – indicating that equilibration has been reached and both sorption-induced changes in deformation and their impact on permeability evolution have ceased. However, for extremely low matrix permeability (tight) dual porosity rocks, this "permeability equilibration time" may easily exceed the time interval between two consecutive permeability measurements – invalidating the interpretation of a steady permeability if the non-steady state conditions are not correctly accommodated. This is especially important where pressure diffusion from fracture to matrix results in a non-monotonic and non-asymptotic approach to a steady permeability, but instead contains multiple stages, plateaus and permeability reversals. We validated this hypothesis through experiments and analysis. Experiments measured the non-monotonic and scale-dependent deformations of fracture and matrix and linked these directly to the dynamic evolution of reservoir permeability. These laboratory strain measurements were integrated with numerical analyses to explore how mass and stresses transferred between matrix and fracture and were coupled under conditions of constant confining pressure. Strain gauges were distributed to directly measure stress transfer between matrix and fracture and interrogated deformation at different scales and at different proximities to control fractures. The prismatic sample of coal was tested under freely expanding boundary conditions. Optical microscopy and X-ray CT imaging were used to define the fracture distribution throughout the sample with mercury intrusion (capillary) porosimetry (MICP) constraining the pore size distribution and enabling independent estimation of matrix permeability. A numerical model was built and verified by matching measured strains and then applying this to model the evolution coal permeability from initial to ultimate equilibrium. Both the experimental and numerical results show that the final equilibrium state (pressure, stress and mass contents) for the matrix system extends to months rather than hours and suggests that some current permeability data may therefore reflect a non-equilibrium permeability state. Results also show that during this non-equilibrium condition, the swelling of the matrix near the fracture will cause not only compaction and narrowing of the fracture, but also shrinkage of the matrix that is distant from the fracture under constant confining pressure condition. Both experimental and numerical results demonstrate that the evolution of non-equilibrium strain/permeability is determined by the matrix-fracture interactions, including sorption-induced swelling/shrinking, through transient stresses in matrix and fractures. And that these non-equilibrium stress transfers determine the dynamic permeability evolution during gas extraction (e.g., CH4) or injection (e.g., CO2) at reservoir scale for tight dual porosity rocks (e.g., coal and shale).

Abstract:In order to comprehensively understand the complex fracture mechanisms in thick and loose sandstone formations, we have carefully developed a coupled finite element numerical model that captures the complex interactions between fluid flow and solid deformation. This model is the cornerstone of our future exploration. Based on this model, the crack propagation problem of hydraulic fracturing under different engineering and geological conditions was studied. In addition, we conducted in-depth research on the key factors that shape the geometry of hydraulic fractures, revealing their subtle differences and complexities. It is worth noting that the sharp contrast between the stress profile and mechanical properties between the production layer and the boundary layer often leads to fascinating phenomena, such as the vertical merging of hydraulic fracture propagation. The convergence of cracks originating from adjacent layers is a recurring theme in these strata. Sensitivity analysis clarified our understanding, revealing that increased elastic modulus promotes longer crack propagation paths. As the elastic modulus increases from 12 GPa to 18 GPa, overall, the maximum crack width slightly decreases, with a less than 10% reduction rate. The increased fluid leakage rate will significantly shorten the length and width of hydraulic fractures (with a maximum decrease of over 70% in fracture width). The increase in viscosity of fracturing fluid causes a change in fracture morphology, with a reduction in length of about 32% and an increase in fracture width of about 25%. It is worth noting that as the leakage rate of fracturing fluid increases, the importance of the viscosity of fracturing fluid decreases relatively. Strategies such as increasing fluid viscosity or adding anti-filtration agents can alleviate these challenges and improve the efficiency of fracturing fluids. In summary, our research findings provide valuable insights that can provide information and optimization for hydraulic fracturing filling and fracturing strategies in loose sandstone formations, promoting more efficient and influential oil and gas extraction work.

Abstract:The shale formation, a common carbon-hydrogen reservoir, has numerous nanoscale pores that facilitate multiple gas transport mechanisms, including viscous flow, slip flow, Knudsen diffusion, and surface diffusion. Additionally, various action mechanisms involving effective stress, real gas effect, gas adsorption and desorption, and fracture-pore characteristics significantly influence gas transport. In this study, we conceptualize shale as a triple porosity medium comprising organic matrix, inorganic matrix, and microfractures. For each system, its hydraulic-mechanical coupled model with action mechanisms and gas transport mechanisms is derived based on fractal theory. After validating the model with Barnett and Marcellus data, the evolution of apparent permeability and gas pressure is studied, as well as the influences of pore fractal features, the real gas effect, and the number of hydraulic fractures on gas extraction. Simulation results indicate that, in comparison to organic matrix, inorganic pore fractal features exert a more noticeable effect on cumulative production. The real gas effect is critical in gas transport and reservoir reserve estimation; disregarding this effect results in a 17.4% underestimation of cumulative gas production by the 1600th day. Fracture interference attenuates the improvement in cumulative production gains from increased hydraulic fracture numbers.
