Abstract:We investigate the possibility of controlling the magnetic phase transition of the heterointerface between a half-doped manganite La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and a multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) through magnetoelectric coupling. Using macroscopic magnetometry and element-selective x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Fe L edges, we discover that the ferroelectric polarization of BFO controls simultaneously the magnetization of BFO and La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 (LCMO). X-ray absorption spectra at the oxygen K edge and linear dichroism at the Mn L edge suggest that the interfacial coupling is mainly derived from the superexchange between Mn and Fe t(2g) spins. The combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and mean-field theory calculations reveals that the d-electron modulation of Mn cations changes the magnetic coupling in LCMO, which controls the enhanced canted moments of interfacial BFO via the interfacial coupling. Our results demonstrate that the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic instability can be modulated by an electric field at the heterointerface, providing another pathway for the electrical field control of magnetism.

Abstract:Multiferroics in nanoscale dimensions are promising for novel functional device paradigms, such as magnetoelectric memories, due to an intriguing cross-coupling between coexisting ferroelectric and (anti) ferromagnetic order parameters. However, the ferroic order is inevitably destroyed below the critical dimension of several nanometers. Here, we demonstrate a new path towards atomic-size multiferroics while resolving the controversial origin of dilute ferromagnetism that unexpectedly emerges in nanoparticles of nonmagnetic ferroelectric PbTiO3. Systematic exploration using predictive quantum-mechanical calculations demonstrates that oxygen vacancies formed at surfaces induce ferromagnetism due to local nonstoichiometry and orbital symmetry breaking. The localized character of the emerged magnetization allows an individual oxygen vacancy to act as an atomic-scale multiferroic element with a nonlinear magnetoelectric effect that involves rich ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic-nonmagnetic phase transitions in response to switching of the spontaneous polarization.
Ferroelectricity induced by interatomic magnetic exchange interaction

Abstract:Multiferroics, where two or more ferroic order parameters coexist, is one of the hottest fields in condensed matter physics and materials science[1-9]. However, the coexistence of magnetism and conventional ferroelectricity is physically unfavoured[10]. Recently several remedies have been proposed, e.g., improper ferroelectricity induced by specific magnetic[6] or charge orders[2]. Guiding by these theories, currently most research is focused on frustrated magnets, which usually have complicated magnetic structure and low magnetic ordering temperature, consequently far from the practical application. Simple collinear magnets, which can have high magnetic transition temperature, have never been considered seriously as the candidates for multiferroics. Here, we argue that actually simple interatomic magnetic exchange interaction already contains a driving force for ferroelectricity, thus providing a new microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism. We demonstrate this mechanism by showing that even the simplest antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator MnO, can display a magnetically induced ferroelectricity under a biaxial strain.
Hierarchical Ferroelectric and Ferrotoroidic Polarizations Coexistent in Nano-Metamaterials

Abstract:Tailoring materials to obtain unique, or significantly enhanced material properties through rationally designed structures rather than chemical constituents is principle of metamaterial concept, which leads to the realization of remarkable optical and mechanical properties. Inspired by the recent progress in electromagnetic and mechanical metamaterials, here we introduce the concept of ferroelectric nano-metamaterials, and demonstrate through an experiment in silico with hierarchical nanostructures of ferroelectrics using sophisticated real-space phase-field techniques. This new concept enables variety of unusual and complex yet controllable domain patterns to be achieved, where the coexistence between hierarchical ferroelectric and ferrotoroidic polarizations establishes a new benchmark for exploration of complexity in spontaneous polarization ordering. The concept opens a novel route to effectively tailor domain configurations through the control of internal structure, facilitating access to stabilization and control of complex domain patterns that provide high potential for novel functionalities. A key design parameter to achieve such complex patterns is explored based on the parity of junctions that connect constituent nanostructures. We further highlight the variety of additional functionalities that are potentially obtained from ferroelectric nano-metamaterials, and provide promising perspectives for novel multifunctional devices. This study proposes an entirely new discipline of ferroelectric nano-metamaterials, further driving advances in metamaterials research.
Coexistence of Magnetic and Electric Orderings in a Divalent Cr2+-based Multiaxial Molecular Ferroelectric

Abstract:Multiferroic materials have attracted great interest because of their underlying new science and promising applications in data storage and mutual control devices. However, they are still very rare and highly imperative to be developed. Here, we report an organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite trimethylchloromethylammonium chromium chloride (TMCM-CrCl3), showing the coexistence of magnetic and electric orderings. It displays a paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition at 397 K with an Aizu notation of 6/mFm, and spin-canted antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature of 4.8 K. The ferroelectricity originates from the orientational ordering of TMCM cations, and the magnetism is from the [CrCl3]- framework. Remarkably, TMCM-CrCl3 is the first experimentally confirmed divalent Cr2+-based multiferroic material as far as we know. A new category of hybrid multiferroic materials is pointed out in this work, and more Cr2+-based multiferroic materials will be expectedly developed in the future.

Abstract:The central challenge in realizing non-volatile, E-field manipulation of magnetism lies in finding an energy efficient means to switch between the distinct magnetic states in a stable and reversible manner. In this work, we demonstrate using electrical polarization-induced charge screening to change the ground state of magnetic ordering in order to non-volatilely tune magnetic properties in ultra-thin Co0.3Fe0.7/Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3/Nb:SrTiO3 (001) multiferroic heterostructures. A robust, voltage-induced, non-volatile manipulation of out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy up to 40 Oe is demonstrated and confirmed by ferromagnetic resonance measurements. This discovery provides a framework for realizing charge-sensitive order parameter tuning in ultra-thin multiferroic heterostructures, demonstrating great potential for delivering compact, lightweight, reconfigurable and energy-efficient electronic devices.
Non- D0 Ferroelectricity from Semicovalent Superexchange in Bismuth Ferrite

Abstract:Empirical d(0) rule, i.e., magnetic unpairing d occupation tends to be chemically incompatible for ferroelectrics, has for long inhibited the availability of room-temperature single-phase multiferroics. Here, we readdress the ferroelectricity of type-I multiferroic BiFeO3, and conclusively clarify hybrid origins of lone-pair electrons' instability. Surprisingly, the sole lone-pair mechanism cannot account for overall polarization. Thus, beyond the popular belief, we propose that, with half-filling t(2g)(3) e(g)(2) configuration and stereochemical activity of Bi's lone pair preparticipating, renormalized nonempty Fe 3d orbitals render BiFeO3 a strong p-d charge-transfer insulator, and further induce non-d(0) ferroelectricity through antiferromagnetic semicovalent superexchange. The magnetoelectric coupling scenario is numerically elaborated by mean-field p-d model, and first-principles generalized gradient approximation GGA + U calculations. The magnetically induced ferroelectricity also reconciles the competitivity of octahedral rotations and ferroelectricity, which turns into cooperative behavior as octahedral rotations straighten the Fe-O-Fe bonds and strengthen superexchange interactions. Such mechanism is in principle ubiquitous in magnets with superexchange interaction and manipulatable to hybridization engineering.
Multiferroic kinks and spin-flop transition in Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$ from first principles

Abstract:Magnetoelectric multiferroics are key materials for next-generation spintronic devices due to their entangled magnetic and ferroelectric properties. Spiral multiferroics possess ferroelectric polarization and are particularly promising for electric control of magnetism and magnetic control of ferroelectricity. In this work, we uncover long-period incommensurate states characterized by unique multiferroic kinks in corundum nickelate Ni$_{2}$InSbO$_6$, a member of a promising family of polar magnets. Utilizing a 2-orbital $S=1$ model, we derive formulas for Heisenberg and anisotropic magnetic exchanges and magnetically-induced polarization, enabling their calculations from first principles. We use these parameters in Monte Carlo and Landau theory-based calculations to reproduce experimentally observed magnetic structures and polarization dependence on the magnetic field. We predict magnetic phase transitions between flat spiral, conical spiral, canted antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic states under increasing magnetic fields. Kinks in the spiral phases repel each other through a Yukawa-like potential arising from exchange of massive magnons. We also find that suitably directed electric fields can be used to stabilize the ferromagnetic and spiral states. The findings open a new pathway to predictive first-principles modelling of multiferroics and will inspire experiments and technological applications based on multiferroic kinks.

Abstract:Multiferroics are rare in nature due to the mutual exclusive origins of magnetism and ferroelectricity. The simultaneous coexistence of robust magnetism/ferroelectricity and strong magnetoelectric coupling in single multiferroics is hitherto unreported, which may also be attributed to their potential conflictions. In this paper, we show the first-principles evidence of such desired coexistence in ultrathin-layer CuCrS2 and CuCrSe2. The vertical ferroelectricity is neither induced by an empty d shell nor spin-driven, giving rise to an alternative possibility of resolving those intrinsic exclusions and contradictions. Compared with their bulk phases, the ferromagnetism in the thin-layer structures (two-six layers) can be greatly stabilized due to the enhanced carrier density and orbital shifting by vertical polarization, and the Curie temperatures of both ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity can be above room temperature. Moreover, a considerable net magnetization can be reversed upon ferroelectric switching, where the change in spin-resolved band structure also renders efficient 'magnetic reading + electrical writing'. The thickness-different layers may even exhibit diversified types of magnetoelectric coupling, which both enriches the physics of multiferroics and facilitates their practical applications.

Abstract:Magnetism and ferroelectricity are essential to many forms of current technology, and the quest for multiferroic materials, where these two phenomena are intimately coupled, is of great technological and fundamental importance. Ferroelectricity and magnetism tend to be mutually exclusive and interact weakly with each other when they coexist. The exciting new development is the discovery that even a weak magnetoelectric interaction can lead to spectacular cross-coupling effects when it induces electric polarization in a magnetically ordered state. Such magnetic ferroelectricity, showing an unprecedented sensitivity to ap plied magnetic fields, occurs in 'frustrated magnets' with competing interactions between spins and complex magnetic orders. We summarize key experimental findings and the current theoretical understanding of these phenomena, which have great potential for tuneable multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Primary ferroicities like ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism are essential physical properties of matter. Multiferroics, with coexisting multiple ferroic orders in a single phase, provide a convenient route to magnetoelectricity. Even so, the general trade-off between magnetism and polarity remains inevitable, which prevents practicable magnetoelectric cross control in the multiferroic framework. Here an alternative strategy, i.e. the so-called alterferroicity, is proposed to circumvent the magnetoelectric exclusiveness, which exhibits multiple but non-coexisting ferroic orders. The natural exclusion between magnetism and polarity, as an insurmountable weakness of multiferroicity, becomes a distinct advantage in alterferroicity, making it an inborn rich ore for intrinsic strong magnetoelectricity. The general design rules for alterferroic materials rely on the competition between the instabilities of phononic and electronic structures in covalent systems. Based on primary density functional theory calculations, Ti-based trichalcogenides are predicted to be alterferroic candidates, which exhibit unique seesaw type magnetoelectricity. This alterferroicity, as an emerging branch of ferroic family, re-shapes the framework of magnetoelectricity, going beyond the established scenario based on multiferroicity.

Abstract:A collective excitation of the spin structure in a magnetic insulator can transmit spin-angular momentum with negligible dissipation. This quantum of a spin wave, introduced more than nine decades ago, has always been manipulated through magnetic dipoles, (i.e., timereversal symmetry). Here, we report the experimental observation of chiral-spin transport in multiferroic BiFeO3, where the spin transport is controlled by reversing the ferroelectric polarization (i.e., spatial inversion symmetry). The ferroelectrically controlled magnons produce an unprecedented ratio of up to 18% rectification at room temperature. The spin torque that the magnons in BiFeO3 carry can be used to efficiently switch the magnetization of adja-cent magnets, with a spin-torque efficiency being comparable to the spin Hall effect in heavy metals. Utilizing such a controllable magnon generation and transmission in BiFeO3, an alloxide, energy-scalable logic is demonstrated composed of spin-orbit injection, detection, and magnetoelectric control. This observation opens a new chapter of multiferroic magnons and paves an alternative pathway towards low-dissipation nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Abstract The discovery of various primary ferroic phases in atomically-thin van der Waals crystals have created a new two-dimensional wonderland for exploring and manipulating exotic quantum phases. It may also bring technical breakthroughs in device applications, as evident by prototypical functionalities of giant tunneling magnetoresistance, gate-tunable ferromagnetism and non-volatile ferroelectric memory etc. However, two-dimensional multiferroics with effective magnetoelectric coupling, which ultimately decides the future of multiferroic-based information technology, has not been realized yet. Here, we show that an unconventional magnetoelectric coupling mechanism interlocked with heterogeneous ferrielectric transitions emerges at the two-dimensional limit in van der Waals multiferroic CuCrP 2 S 6 with inherent antiferromagnetism and antiferroelectricity. Distinct from the homogeneous antiferroelectric bulk, thin-layer CuCrP 2 S 6 under external electric field makes layer-dependent heterogeneous ferrielectric transitions, minimizing the depolarization effect introduced by the rearrangements of Cu + ions within the ferromagnetic van der Waals cages of CrS 6 and P 2 S 6 octahedrons. The resulting ferrielectric phases are characterized by substantially reduced interlayer magnetic coupling energy of nearly 50% with a moderate electric field of 0.3 V nm −1 , producing widely-tunable magnetoelectric coupling which can be further engineered by asymmetrical electrode work functions.

Abstract:The mutual controls of ferroelectricity and magnetism are stepping towards practical applications proposed for quite a few promising devices in which multiferroic thin films are involved. Although ferroelectricity stemming from specific spiral spin ordering has been reported in highly distorted bulk perovskite manganites, the existence of magnetically induced ferroelectricity in the corresponding thin films remains an unresolved issue, which unfortunately halts this step. In this work, we report magnetically induced electric polarization and its remarkable response to magnetic field (an enhancement of ~800% upon a field of 2 Tesla at 2 K) in DyMnO3 thin films grown on Nb-SrTiO3 substrates. Accompanying with the large polarization enhancement, the ferroelectric coercivity corresponding to the magnetic chirality switching field is significantly increased. A picture based on coupled multicomponent magnetic structures is proposed to understand these features. Moreover, different magnetic anisotropy related to strain-suppressed GdFeO3-type distortion and Jahn-Teller effect is identified in the films.
Designing a ferrimagnetic-ferroelastic multiferroic semiconductor in FeMoClO<sub>4</sub> nanosheets <i>via</i> element substitution

Abstract:Exploring two-dimensional multiferroic semiconductors, combined with ferro-/ferrimagnetism and ferroelasticity as well as large spin polarization around the valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM), is highly desirable but remains a challenging task. Here, via first-principles calculations, we predict such a material based on the square phase FeMoClO4 nanosheet, which is experimentally accessible by exfoliating its layered bulk. Pristine FeMoClO4 nanosheets are a weak antiferromagnet with zero spin polarization. After substituting nonmagnetic Mo with magnetic Mn, the resulting FeMnClO4 nanosheet becomes ferrimagnetic with magnetic ordering temperature significantly enhanced from 14 to 127 K. Besides, the FeMnClO4 nanosheet is a half semiconductor with its VBM and CBM 100% spin-polarized in the same spin direction. Interestingly, the initial square lattice is distorted into a rectangular one, inducing an in-plane ferroelasticity in the FeMnClO4 nanosheet with a switching barrier of 27 meV per atom. Moreover, under ferroelastic transition, the orientation of the magnetic easy axis can be reversibly rotated by 90°, indicating a strong magnetoelastic coupling.

Abstract:The discovery of novel two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic materials is attractive due to their potential for the realization of information storage and logic devices. Although many approaches have been explored to simultaneously introduce ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric (FE) orders into a 2D material, the resulting systems are often plagued by weak magnetoelectric (ME) coupling or limited room-temperature stability. Here, we present a superlattice strategy to construct non-centrosymmetric AM 2 X 4 multiferroic monolayers, i.e., intercalating transition metal ions (A) into the tetragonal-like vacancies of transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers (MX 2 ). Starting from 960 intercalated AM 2 X 4 compounds, our high-throughput calculations have identified 21 multiferroics with robust magnetic order, large FE polarization, low transition barrier, high FE/FM transition temperature, and strong ME coupling. According to the origin of magnetism, we have classified them into twelve type- a , seven type- b , and two type- c multiferroics, which exhibit different ME coupling behavior. During the switching of polarization, the reversal of skyrmions chirality, the transition of the magnetic ground state from FM to antiferromagnetic, and the changes in spin-polarized electron distribution were observed in type- a , type- b , and type- c 2D multiferroic materials, respectively. These results substantially expand the family of 2D ferroic materials and pave an avenue for designing and implementing nonvolatile logic and memory devices.

Abstract:Multiferroics are compounds in which at least two ferroic orders coexist, typically ferroelectricity and some form of magnetism. While magnetic order can arise in both insulating and metallic compounds, ferroelectricity is in principle only allowed in insulators, although ferroelectric metals have been proposed and several two-dimensional systems have been reported to behave in this way. However, their combination with and coupling to magnetic order have not been realized thus far. Here we show the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism in an oxide-based two-dimensional electron gas. We report a modulation of the Ti–O polar displacements depending on the ferroelectric polarization direction, and a voltage-induced hysteresis of the sheet resistance that is reminiscent of the ferroelectric polarization loop. The transport properties of the electron gas display an anomalous Hall effect and magnetoresistance that can both be modulated and cycled by switching the remanent polarization, demonstrating a magnetoelectric coupling. Our findings provide new opportunities in quantum matter that stem from the interplay between ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism, metallicity and Rashba spin–orbit coupling.

Designing a ferrimagnetic-ferroelastic multiferroic semiconductor in FeMoClO 4 nanosheets via element substitution.

Abstract:Exploring two-dimensional multiferroic semiconductors, combined with ferro-/ferrimagnetism and ferroelasticity as well as large spin polarization around the valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM), is highly desirable but remains a challenging task. Here, first-principles calculations, we predict such a material based on the square phase FeMoClO nanosheet, which is experimentally accessible by exfoliating its layered bulk. Pristine FeMoClO nanosheets are a weak antiferromagnet with zero spin polarization. After substituting nonmagnetic Mo with magnetic Mn, the resulting FeMnClO nanosheet becomes ferrimagnetic with magnetic ordering temperature significantly enhanced from 14 to 127 K. Besides, the FeMnClO nanosheet is a half semiconductor with its VBM and CBM 100% spin-polarized in the same spin direction. Interestingly, the initial square lattice is distorted into a rectangular one, inducing an in-plane ferroelasticity in the FeMnClO nanosheet with a switching barrier of 27 meV per atom. Moreover, under ferroelastic transition, the orientation of the magnetic easy axis can be reversibly rotated by 90°, indicating a strong magnetoelastic coupling.

Abstract:Helical spin structures are expressions of magnetically induced chirality, entangling the dipolar and magnetic orders in materials 1,2,3,4 . The recent discovery of helical van der Waals multiferroics down to the ultrathin limit raises prospects of large chiral magnetoelectric correlations in two dimensions 5,6 . However, the exact nature and magnitude of these couplings have remained unknown so far. Here we perform a precision measurement of the dynamical magnetoelectric coupling for an enantiopure domain in an exfoliated van der Waals multiferroic. We evaluate this interaction in resonance with a collective electromagnon mode, capturing the impact of its oscillations on the dipolar and magnetic orders of the material with a suite of ultrafast optical probes. Our data show a giant natural optical activity at terahertz frequencies, characterized by quadrature modulations between the electric polarization and magnetization components. First-principles calculations further show that these chiral couplings originate from the synergy between the non-collinear spin texture and relativistic spin–orbit interactions, resulting in substantial enhancements over lattice-mediated effects. Our findings highlight the potential for intertwined orders to enable unique functionalities in the two-dimensional limit and pave the way for the development of van der Waals magnetoelectric devices operating at terahertz speeds.

Abstract:The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism in van der Waals materials has opened the door to the control of 2D magnetism by means of electric field. Here we demonstrate the magnetization reversal through switching polarization in a designed 2D multiferroic oxide by combining group theory analysis and first-principles calculation. We show that ferroelectricity can be induced by a specific octahedral rotation in a perovskite bilayer. Ferromagnetism can be introduced simultaneously by extending the guideline to the B-site ordered double-perovskite bilayer. We have found two coupling mechanisms between polarization and magnetization that enable the reversal of the in-plane magnetization by ferroelectric switching. Our work provides guidelines for the design of 2D multiferroics with intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling and helps to control the 2D magnetism by electric field.
