Abstract:Primary ferroicities like ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism are essential physical properties of matter. Multiferroics, with coexisting multiple ferroic orders in a single phase, provide a convenient route to magnetoelectricity. Even so, the general trade-off between magnetism and polarity remains inevitable, which prevents practicable magnetoelectric cross control in the multiferroic framework. Here an alternative strategy, i.e. the so-called alterferroicity, is proposed to circumvent the magnetoelectric exclusiveness, which exhibits multiple but non-coexisting ferroic orders. The natural exclusion between magnetism and polarity, as an insurmountable weakness of multiferroicity, becomes a distinct advantage in alterferroicity, making it an inborn rich ore for intrinsic strong magnetoelectricity. The general design rules for alterferroic materials rely on the competition between the instabilities of phononic and electronic structures in covalent systems. Based on primary density functional theory calculations, Ti-based trichalcogenides are predicted to be alterferroic candidates, which exhibit unique seesaw type magnetoelectricity. This alterferroicity, as an emerging branch of ferroic family, re-shapes the framework of magnetoelectricity, going beyond the established scenario based on multiferroicity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the inherent contradiction between the difficulty of co - existence of magnetism and polarization in multiferroic materials, so as to achieve a strong magnetoelectric effect. Specifically: 1. **Limitations of multiferroic materials**: - Multiferroic materials aim to achieve the co - existence of magnetism and polarization through a single material and use an electric field to control magnetism or a magnetic field to control polarization, which is of great value for next - generation information devices. - However, magnetism and polarization are often naturally separated at the quantum - electron level. Even if an ideal multiferroic system is found, it is difficult to achieve effective cross - regulation because these two types of ferro - order follow different symmetries. 2. **Proposed alternative strategy: Alterferroicity**: - The paper proposes a new concept - alterferroicity, which shows multiple but non - co - existing ferro - order states. - Alterferroic materials achieve a strong magnetoelectric effect by taking advantage of the natural repulsion between magnetism and polarization instead of trying to make them co - exist. 3. **Design rules**: - The design rules of alterferroicity rely on the competition between phonon and electron - structure instabilities in covalent systems, such as Ti - based trichalcogenides. These materials exhibit a seesaw - type magnetoelectric effect and possible ferro - order phase separation. - In order to achieve alterferroicity, it is necessary to look for materials that are close to the boundaries of magnetism and polarization and have partial covalent bonding, such as TMTC monolayers. 4. **Research on specific materials**: - Taking TiGeTe₃ as an example, the paper studies its alterferroic behavior in detail. Through first - principles density - functional - theory (DFT) calculations, its magnetic and polarization states under different conditions are revealed. - Further, through doping experiments (such as Ti(Ge₁₋ₓSnₓ)Te₃), an energy - equivalent point (x = 5/8) is found, making the energies of the magnetic and polarization states equivalent, thus achieving unbiased alterferroic switching. 5. **Seesaw - type magnetoelectric effect**: - By means of external electric fields or strains, etc., the phase - separation pattern in alterferroic materials can be modulated, thereby achieving the regulation of the macroscopic ferro - order quantity and forming a unique seesaw - type magnetoelectric effect. - This effect is different from the traditional linear or nonlinear magnetoelectric effects and can achieve direct switching between the two main ferro - order states. In summary, this paper provides a brand - new strategy to achieve a strong magnetoelectric effect by introducing the concept of alterferroicity, solves the problem of the difficulty of co - existence of magnetism and polarization in traditional multiferroic materials, and provides new ideas for the design of next - generation information devices.
