Abstract:The structural, vibrational and electronic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal under high pressure up to 40 GPa have been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The pressure dependences on the cell volume, lattice constants, and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed. It is found that the N-N bonds are significantly reduced under compression, which may be of importance for initial decomposition. Based on the optimized crystal structures, the vibrational frequencies for the internal and lattice modes of the -HMX crystal at ambient and high pressures are computed, and the pressure-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed.

Abstract:The structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal have been studied using the isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics (NPT-MD) simulations. The variations of cell volume, lattice constants and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed at different pressure and temperature. It was found that the N-N bond is significantly lengthened with increasing temperature, which suggests that it is relevant to the initial decomposition. An abrupt change at 27 Gpa for the volume and internal geometrical parameters was observed. This is in good accord with the experimental observation that there is a phase transition at 27 GPa, which is clearly due to conformational change, not chemical reaction. The vibrational frequencies at ambient conditions agree well with experimental results, and the pressure/temperature-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed. Frequency discontinuity was also observed at pressure when the phase transition occurred. The Gruneisen parameter was obtained using the vibrational frequency.

Abstract:ABSTRACT 1, 1′‐azobis‐1, 2, 3‐triazole (C 4 H 4 N 8 , N8) is a novel nitrogen‐rich energetic material with excellent detonation performance, which has received widespread interest. Inspired by recent theories and experiments, the dependence of structural, vibrational, and electronic properties on high pressure up to 10 GPa was systematically investigated using periodic DFT calculations. It was found that the optimized structure belonged to the cis ‐N8 structure through comparing the theoretical IR with experimental IR spectra. The third‐order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state for N8 was obtained up to 10 GPa, where the bulk modulus and its pressure derivative were 10.91 GPa and 7.689, respectively. More importantly, the pressure dependence of Laplacian bond order indicated that the five‐membered ring opening was the first step in the decomposition process, and that high pressure could inhibit the decomposition process of N8 due to the reinforcement of non‐covalent interactions. The present work could deepen the understanding of the energetic materials N8 under high pressure, and is of great significance to the blasting and detonation applications of N8.

Abstract:The decomposition process of 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) crystal at high temperatures (2500 and 3390 K) and detonation pressure of 33.4 GPa coupled with temperatures were studied by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the initial decomposition mechanism of LLM-105 is the same under different conditions. The product analysis indicates that high temperature is conducive to the formation of N 2 and CO 2 , but inhibited the formation of H 2 O. It is found that the formation mechanism of H 2 O is the same under different conditions, which involves the reaction between OH radical and H radical. Although the detailed processes of the formation of N 2 are different, they all involve the reaction between nitrogen-containing fragments, and its core is the formation of intermediates with R 1 -NN-R 2 structure. The core of the formation of CO 2 under different conditions is to form the intermediate R 1 -CO-R 2 with carbonyl structure, and then generate the fragment with -OCO- structure, and finally generate CO 2 . This research may provide new insights into the initiation and subsequent decomposition mechanisms of energetic materials under extreme conditions.

Abstract:The high-pressure behaviors of nitrogen-rich 1H-tetrazole (CH 2 N 4 ) have been investigated by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering up to 75 GPa. A first crystalline-to-crystalline phase transition is observed and identified above ~3 GPa with a large volume collapse (∼18% at 4.4 GPa) from phase I to phase II. The new phase II forms a dimer-like structure, belonging to P 1 space group. Then, a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition takes place over a large pressure range of 13.8 to 50 GPa, which is accompanied by an interphase region approaching paracrystalline state. When decompression from 75 GPa to ambient conditions, the final product keeps an irreversible amorphous state. Our ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectrum suggests the final product exhibits an increase in molecular conjugation.

Abstract:A detailed study of structural, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX)/1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone (DMI) cocrystal under the hydrostatic pressure of 0–100 GPa was performed by using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) method. The calculated crystal structure is in reasonable agreement with the experimental data at the ambient pressure. Based on the analysis of lattice constants, bond lengths, bond angles, and dihedral angles under compression, it is found that HMX molecules in HMX/DMI cocrystal are seriously distorted. In addition, as the pressure increases, the band gap decreases gradually, which suggests that HMX/DMI cocrystal is becoming more metallic. Some important intermolecular interactions between HMX and DMI are also observed in the density of states spectrum. Finally, its thermodynamic properties were characterized, and the results show that HMX/DMI cocrystal is more easily formed in the low pressure.

Abstract:Diphenylphosphoryl azide ((C6H5O)(2)P(O)N-3, DPPA) was studied by in situ Raman scattering spectroscopy and synchrotron angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction (ADXRD) technologies up to 11.6 GPa at room temperature. The analyses of Raman spectra revealed that the liquid DPPA transformed from Phase I to Phase II at 0.4 GPa and went to Phase III at 1.3 GPa. The first phase transition was attributed to the change of molecular conformation, and the second phase transition was induced by the deformation of benzene rings. The XRD results suggested that DPPA remained in a liquid state during the two phase transitions. The azide group became increasingly asymmetric under pressure and decomposed at 11.6 GPa. The low decomposition pressure of the azide group is conducive to the formation of polymeric nitrogen. Exploring the behaviors of the azide group under pressure might be helpful for understanding the potential application of DPPA in the synthesis of high energy density materials (HEDMs).

Abstract:The phase transition of β-HMX crystal has been widely studied under high pressure, but the microscopic transition mechanism is not sufficient understood. In this article, we perform a series of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations focusing on structure deformation and corresponding vibration spectra resolving of β-HMX at 0-40 GPa. Several typical pressure-induced phase transition processes are confirmed by analyzing the chemical bond, dihedral angle, charge transfer and IR, Raman spectra. The corresponding relationship between molecular structure and spectral signal is constructed through the partial spectra calculations of special functional groups within HMX molecule. The anisotropic effects of different groups on initial structural phase transition are uncovered. The equatorial C-N and axial N-N bonds have the largest compression ratio as pressure increase, which are the intrinsic factor for the initiation of structure transformation. The C-N molecular ring plays an important role in the whole phase transition process. In addition, the phase transition of β→ζ is also closely relevant with the deformation of NO2, while that of ζ→ε is induced by the axial N-NO2 group. As for the higher pressure phase transition, the synergetic effect of N-NO2, CH2 groups and molecular ring becomes more considerable.

Abstract:High-pressure methods were applied to investigate the structural stability and hydrogen bonding of polar molecules of iodoform by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra measurements, respectively. Up to a pressure of 40 GPa, no phase transitions were observed. The discontinuous frequency shift of the C-H stretching band is believed to be related to the enhancement of the C-H center dot center dot center dot I weak hydrogen bonds under high pressures. Ab initio calculations were performed, and the results predict the frequency shift of the C-H stretching vibration as C-H center dot center dot center dot I interacts via hydrogen bonding. The bulk modulus is 17.3 +/- 0.8 GPa, with a pressure deriivative of 5.2.

Abstract:The effect of pressure on crystal structures, electronic properties, hydrogen bonds, optical properties and mechanical features of high-performing energetic material 1,5-diaminotetrazole-4: N-oxide was investigated by high-precision DFT-D method. The results reveal that there exists a critical point of phase transition around 8 GPa, reflected in various properties of the crystal. Band gap decreases gradually as the pressure increases, illustrating electrons are easier to transit from occupied orbit to the empty. The DOS analysis indicates that C-NH 2 , N-NH 2 and N = O bonds may play a role as a reaction channel for the initial decomposition under high pressures. The hydrogen bond analysis indicates that pressure can alter the distribution of hydrogen bond in the crystal and modify the physicochemical properties. The absorption spectra of the crystal under high-pressure conditions show several strong bands in UV–visible region. The analysis on mechanical properties reveals that pressure can effectively improve the rigidity, plasticity and ductility for the crystal. Our results clarify the effect of pressure on energetic materials and are conducive to find the new crystalline phases for energetic materials.

Abstract:In this work, we report the structure, mechanical properties, and vibrational spectra of 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105), an energetic molecular crystal, with a first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT) using the recentely developped HASEM package. The elastic constants, acoustic velocity, and parameters of equations of state were calculated, and the predicted ordering of stiffness constants is C 33 (38.5 GPa) > C 11 (24.0 GPa) > C 22 (17.7 GPa). We also investigated the structure and equation of state of LLM-105 under hydrostatic pressure up to 100 GPa. The predicted structures are in good agreement with experimental results available from ambient pressure to 20 GPa. Under compressions, the LLM-105 crystal exhibits anisotropic compressibility, with a highly incompressible response along the a-axis and c-axis. It is worth noting that there is a sudden change in the lattice parameters and change rate of volume at ~30 GPa. Based on the intermolecular interaction analysis and vibrational spectra, a phase transition at the hydrostatic pressure of ~30 GPa is predicted.

Abstract:We report the preparation of a co-crystal formed between the energetic molecule 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) and 4,4'-bipyridine (BIPY), that has been structurally characterised by high-pressure single crystal and neutron powder diffraction data up to 5.93 GPa. No phase transitions or proton transfer were observed up to this pressure. At higher pressures the crystal quality degraded and the X-ray diffraction patterns showed severe twinning, with the appearance of multiple crystalline domains. Computational modelling indicates that the colour changes observed on application of pressure can be attributed to compression of the unit cell that cause heightened band dispersion and band gap narrowing that coincides with a shortening of the BIPY π...π stacking distance. Modelling also suggests that the application of pressure induces proton migration along an N-H...N intermolecular hydrogen bond. Impact-sensitivity measurements show that the co-crystal is less sensitive to initiation than NTO, whereas computational modelling suggests that the impact sensitivities of NTO and the co-crystal are broadly similar.

Abstract:The first high pressure study of solid hydrazinium monochloride has been performed by in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (XRD) experiments in diamond anvil cell (DAC) up to 39.5 and 24.6 GPa, respectively. The structure of phase I at room temperature is confirmed to be space group C2/c by the Raman spectral analysis and Rietveld refinement of the XRD pattern. A structural transition from phase I to II is observed at 7.3 GPa. Pressure‐induced position variation of hydrogen atoms in NH3+ unit during the phase transition is attributed to the formation of N―H…Cl hydrogen‐bonds, which play a vital role in the stability and subsequent structural changes of this high energetic material under pressure. This inference is proved from the abnormal pressure shifts and obvious Fermi resonance in NH stretching mode of N2H5+ ion in the Raman experiment. Finally, a further transition from phase II to III accompanied with a slight internal distortion in the N2H5+ ions occurs above 19.8 GPa, and phase III persists up to 39.5 GPa. Abstract:The effects of high pressure on the structural stability of the melamine-boric acid adduct (C3N6H6 center dot 2H(3)BO(3), M center dot 2B), a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded supramolecular architecture, were studied by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. M center dot 2B exhibited a high compressibility and a strong anisotropic compression, which can be explained by the layerlike crystal packing. Furthermore, evolution of XRD patterns and Raman spectra indicated that the M center dot 2B crystal undergoes a reversible pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) at 18 GPa. The mechanism for the PIA was attributed to the competition between close packing and long-range order. Ab initio calculations were also performed to account for the behavior of hydrogen bonding under high pressure.

Abstract:The high-energetic and low-sensitive explosive material of 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) was theoretically investigated by first principles calculations and Hirshfeld surface analysis. The experimental and partly optimized LLM-105 crystals were compared which indicated that it is important to correct the hydrogen positions. Hirshfeld surface analyses of the experimental and partly optimized LLM-105 crystals were also compared, which showed that the intermolecular H⋯O interactions significantly contribute to the stability of the LLM-105 crystal, while the contributions of other intermolecular interactions in the experimental and partly optimized LLM-105 crystals are quite different. The geometrical and electronic structures of LLM-105 molecules in the experimental and partly optimized crystals as well as that in the gas phase were compared. QTAIM analysis was employed to illustrate the existences of intermolecular interactions in the molecular pairs taken from partly optimized LLM-105 crystal, and the types of intermolecular interactions from QTAIM analysis are in agreement with the results of Hirshfeld surface analysis. The reason why the LLM-105 molecule in the partly optimized crystal adopts a non-coplanar structure in which the NO2 and NH2 groups is not coplanar with the six-membered ring is elaborated. The existence of cooperativity among different intermolecular interactions were verified by analysing the trimeric complexes formed among three LLM-105 molecules in the partly optimized crystal.

Investigation on the Stability of Derivative Melam from Melamine Pyrolysis under High Pressure

Abstract:Although various kinds of carbon nitride precursors have been proposed, s-triazine-based structures are hardly reported because of their unfavorable energy, higher than that of heptazine-based ones. In this study, we investigate the thermal stability of s-triazine-based melam processed at a high pressure of 5 GPa and a temperature of 400–700 °C and complete the analyses of the composition and structure of the treated samples through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and elemental analyses (EA). Results show that melam can stably exist up to 600 °C at 5 GPa. XRD and FTIR analyses reveal that residual melamine can be pyrolyzed into melam as temperature increases from 400 °C to 600 °C at a high pressure, suggesting that melam may be purified through high-pressure pyrolysis. Further melam polymerization at a higher pressure is a promising strategy for the preparation of s-triazine-based carbon nitride precursors used for bulk carbon nitride synthesis.

Abstract:The crystal and molecular structure, electronic properties, optical parameters, and elastic properties of a 1:2 hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20)/2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMI) cocrystal under 0 ~ 100 GPa hydrostatic pressure were calculated. The results show that the cocrystal CL-20/MMI undergoes three structural transitions at 72 GPa, 95 GPa, and 97 GPa, respectively, and the structural transition occurs in the part of the MMI compound. Structural mutations formed new bonds S1-S2, C2-C7, and N1C5 at 72GPa, 95 GPa, and 97 GPa, respectively. Similarly, the formation of new bonds is confirmed on the basis of an analysis of the changes in lattice constants, cell volumes, and partial densities of states (PDOS) for S1, S2, C2, C7, N1, and C3 at the corresponding pressures. The optical parameters show that the pressure makes the peaks of various optical parameters of CL-20/MMI larger, and the optical activity is enhanced. The optical parameters also confirm the structural mutation of CL-20/MMI under the corresponding pressure.

Selected Reactive Sites Tuned by High Pressure: Oligomerization of Solid-State Cyanamide

Abstract:We studied high-pressure reaction of solid cyanamide in a diamond anvil cell up to a pressure of 21.7 GPa. The results of in situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy and angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction experiments indicated the occurrence of pressure-induced oligomerization in cyanamide over 13 GPa. The Raman, NMR, and UV absorption spectra of recovered samples confirmed that the chemical reaction was irreversible and that the high-pressure products contained C═N bonds. Subsequently, results of kinetic studies showed the relation between pressure and the reaction rate. Meanwhile dependence of activation volume with pressure indicated that the steric factors affected the reaction. Additionally, the increase in the amount of C–C bonds of recovered samples was attributed to the change of reactive sites of adjacent C≡N groups. These results suggest that the application of pressure can tune both the reactive sites and the reaction rate to affect oligomerization and even other chemical reactions.
Exploring the High-Pressure Polymorphs of Flexible Molecules by Crystal Structure Prediction: A Case of 1,3,5-Trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane

Abstract:Exploring the high-pressure polymorphs of energetic compounds is of great interest in evaluating their performances since they always suffer from high pressure in service. We conducted crystal structure prediction (CSP) of 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX) at ambient and high pressures by a combined method to emulate energetic crystals in practical use. That is, we first modified a force field (FF) by considering the flexibility of the RDX molecule to primarily screen out the most energetically favored crystal structures under common conditions, and subsequently, the dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) method was applied to refine and rank the structures under common and high-pressure conditions. Thereby, all four polymorphs of RDX with experimentally determined crystal structures are reproduced. Apart from the relatively low ranking of beta-RDX, alpha- (1 at 0 GPa), epsilon-, and gamma-RDX (3 and 1 at 5 GPa, respectively) rank very high in the relative energy landscape. The inferiority of the energy ranking of beta-RDX suggests a possible kinetic domination in formation. Moreover, a potential high-pressure form, putative eta-RDX, is identified as it ranks 1 and 2 in a pressure range of about 2.3 to 3.5 GPa and at 5 GPa, respectively, and needs further experimental verification. Our work validates the modified FF and DFT-D combined method to CSP, whether under pressure loading or not.
