Abstract:The structural, vibrational and electronic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal under high pressure up to 40 GPa have been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The pressure dependences on the cell volume, lattice constants, and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed. It is found that the N-N bonds are significantly reduced under compression, which may be of importance for initial decomposition. Based on the optimized crystal structures, the vibrational frequencies for the internal and lattice modes of the -HMX crystal at ambient and high pressures are computed, and the pressure-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed.

Abstract:In this work, we report the structure, mechanical properties, and vibrational spectra of 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105), an energetic molecular crystal, with a first-principles method based on density functional theory (DFT) using the recentely developped HASEM package. The elastic constants, acoustic velocity, and parameters of equations of state were calculated, and the predicted ordering of stiffness constants is C 33 (38.5 GPa) > C 11 (24.0 GPa) > C 22 (17.7 GPa). We also investigated the structure and equation of state of LLM-105 under hydrostatic pressure up to 100 GPa. The predicted structures are in good agreement with experimental results available from ambient pressure to 20 GPa. Under compressions, the LLM-105 crystal exhibits anisotropic compressibility, with a highly incompressible response along the a-axis and c-axis. It is worth noting that there is a sudden change in the lattice parameters and change rate of volume at ~30 GPa. Based on the intermolecular interaction analysis and vibrational spectra, a phase transition at the hydrostatic pressure of ~30 GPa is predicted.

Abstract:The structural, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of -octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (-HMX) crystal have been studied using the isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics (NPT-MD) simulations. The variations of cell volume, lattice constants and molecular geometry of solid -HMX are presented and discussed at different pressure and temperature. It was found that the N-N bond is significantly lengthened with increasing temperature, which suggests that it is relevant to the initial decomposition. An abrupt change at 27 Gpa for the volume and internal geometrical parameters was observed. This is in good accord with the experimental observation that there is a phase transition at 27 GPa, which is clearly due to conformational change, not chemical reaction. The vibrational frequencies at ambient conditions agree well with experimental results, and the pressure/temperature-induced frequency shifts of these modes are discussed. Frequency discontinuity was also observed at pressure when the phase transition occurred. The Gruneisen parameter was obtained using the vibrational frequency.
First-Principles Study of Electronic and Elastic Properties of Hexagonal Layered Crystal MoS2 Under Pressure

Abstract:The structural, electronic, and elastic properties of hexagonal layered crystal MoS2 under pressure are investigated using first-principles calculations within the local density approximation (LDA). The calculated lattice parameters a(0), c(0), and cell volume V-0 of MoS2 are in good agreement with the available experimental data. Our calculations show that MoS2 is an indirect band gap semiconductor and there is a vanishing anisotropy in the rate of structural change at around 25 GPa, which is consistent with the experimental result. We also analyse the partial density of states (PDOS) of MoS2 at 0 and 14 GPa, which indicate that the whole valence bands of MoS2 are mainly composed by the Mo-4d and S-3s states at 0 GPa, while they are mainly composed by the Mo-4p, Mo-4d, and S-3p states at 14 GPa. The electronic charge density difference maps show the covalent characteristic of Mo-S, and the bonding properties of MoS2 are investigated by using the Mulliken overlap population. In addition, the elastic constants C-ij, bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, Young's modulus Y, the Debye temperature Theta(D), and hardness H of MoS2 are also obtained successfully. It is found that they all increase monotonically with the increasing pressure.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. This study utilizes first-principle density functional theory (DFT) to explore the high-pressure behavior of 4-hydrazine benzene sulfonamide. Our investigation, spanning pressures from 0 to 300[math]GPa, delves into diverse properties of the crystal (C6H9N3O2S), encompassing the crystal structure, band gap, density of states, permittivity, and conductivity. Under increasing pressure, intriguing observations emerge. Distortions in the molecular structure manifest notably at 70, 130, and 270[math]GPa, accompanied by distinctive anisotropic behavior in lattice constants. Notably, our scrutiny of the band gap and density of states exposes a transition from a semiconductor to a metallic state and back to a semiconductor state, illuminating the profound influence of pressure on the material's electronic structure. At 0[math]GPa, the real part of permittivity registers negative values within the 15.6–20.2[math]eV energy range, suggesting the crystal's inability to propagate light and its manifestation of metallic reflection properties. Conversely, at 270[math]GPa, the imaginary part of permittivity indicates metallic characteristics within the electronic structure, alongside a substantial energy loss in the crystal's real part of conductivity. Moreover, the imaginary part of conductivity unveils pronounced energy conversion between the driving electric field and current excitation, hinting at structural instability under this extreme pressure. This research contributes vital insights into the behavior of hydrocarbons under high pressure, filling crucial gaps in our understanding of their properties.

Abstract:The high-pressure behaviors of nitrogen-rich 1H-tetrazole (CH 2 N 4 ) have been investigated by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering up to 75 GPa. A first crystalline-to-crystalline phase transition is observed and identified above ~3 GPa with a large volume collapse (∼18% at 4.4 GPa) from phase I to phase II. The new phase II forms a dimer-like structure, belonging to P 1 space group. Then, a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition takes place over a large pressure range of 13.8 to 50 GPa, which is accompanied by an interphase region approaching paracrystalline state. When decompression from 75 GPa to ambient conditions, the final product keeps an irreversible amorphous state. Our ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectrum suggests the final product exhibits an increase in molecular conjugation.

Abstract:Diphenylphosphoryl azide ((C6H5O)(2)P(O)N-3, DPPA) was studied by in situ Raman scattering spectroscopy and synchrotron angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction (ADXRD) technologies up to 11.6 GPa at room temperature. The analyses of Raman spectra revealed that the liquid DPPA transformed from Phase I to Phase II at 0.4 GPa and went to Phase III at 1.3 GPa. The first phase transition was attributed to the change of molecular conformation, and the second phase transition was induced by the deformation of benzene rings. The XRD results suggested that DPPA remained in a liquid state during the two phase transitions. The azide group became increasingly asymmetric under pressure and decomposed at 11.6 GPa. The low decomposition pressure of the azide group is conducive to the formation of polymeric nitrogen. Exploring the behaviors of the azide group under pressure might be helpful for understanding the potential application of DPPA in the synthesis of high energy density materials (HEDMs).

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of SnBr4 has been explored by angle dispersive X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, optical absorption/transmission measurements, and ab initio calculations. The joint of experimental and theoretical results shows that there is a crystal-crystal transition induced by molecular dimerization, which begins at similar to 10.8 GPa and completes at 21.5 GPa. Above 21.5 GPa, the gradual crystal-amorphous transition induced by the molecular dissociation appears, and the sample remains in partial amorphous state up to 43.8 GPa. At similar to 40.3 GPa, the possible insulator-metal transformation is discovered by in situ optical transmission measurements. It is proposed that the observed amorphous phase is a nonmolecular phase by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The structural behavior of Mg3N2 has been investigated up to 40.7 GPa at room temperature by means of angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction. A reversible, first-order structural phase transition from the ambient cubic phase (la (3) over bar) to a high-pressure monoclinic phase (C2/m) is found to start at similar to 20.6 GPa and complete at similar to 32.5 GPa for the first time. The equation of state determined from our experiments yields bulk moduli of 110.7(2) and 171.5(1) GPa for the cubic and monoclinic phases, respectively, indicating higher incompressibility of the high-pressure phase Of Mg3N2. First-principles calculations reproduced the phase stability and transition pressure determined in our experiment, In addition, a second phase transition from the monoclinic phase to a hexagonal phase (P (3) over barm(1)) was predicted around 67 GPa for Mg3N2. The electronic band structures of three phases of Mg3N2 are also calculated and discussed.

Abstract:The first high pressure study of solid hydrazinium monochloride has been performed by in situ Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron X‐ray diffraction (XRD) experiments in diamond anvil cell (DAC) up to 39.5 and 24.6 GPa, respectively. The structure of phase I at room temperature is confirmed to be space group C2/c by the Raman spectral analysis and Rietveld refinement of the XRD pattern. A structural transition from phase I to II is observed at 7.3 GPa. Pressure‐induced position variation of hydrogen atoms in NH3+ unit during the phase transition is attributed to the formation of N―H…Cl hydrogen‐bonds, which play a vital role in the stability and subsequent structural changes of this high energetic material under pressure. This inference is proved from the abnormal pressure shifts and obvious Fermi resonance in NH stretching mode of N2H5+ ion in the Raman experiment. Finally, a further transition from phase II to III accompanied with a slight internal distortion in the N2H5+ ions occurs above 19.8 GPa, and phase III persists up to 39.5 GPa. Abstract:The effect of pressure on crystal structures, electronic properties, hydrogen bonds, optical properties and mechanical features of high-performing energetic material 1,5-diaminotetrazole-4: N-oxide was investigated by high-precision DFT-D method. The results reveal that there exists a critical point of phase transition around 8 GPa, reflected in various properties of the crystal. Band gap decreases gradually as the pressure increases, illustrating electrons are easier to transit from occupied orbit to the empty. The DOS analysis indicates that C-NH 2 , N-NH 2 and N = O bonds may play a role as a reaction channel for the initial decomposition under high pressures. The hydrogen bond analysis indicates that pressure can alter the distribution of hydrogen bond in the crystal and modify the physicochemical properties. The absorption spectra of the crystal under high-pressure conditions show several strong bands in UV–visible region. The analysis on mechanical properties reveals that pressure can effectively improve the rigidity, plasticity and ductility for the crystal. Our results clarify the effect of pressure on energetic materials and are conducive to find the new crystalline phases for energetic materials.

Abstract:MnPS3, a novel ternary-layered material, hasattractedextensive attention in materials, physics, and chemistry owing toits excellent electrical transport and photoelectric properties. Pressureis a useful technique to explore unprecedented phenomena and propertiesin condensed matter. In this study, combining high-pressure Ramanspectroscopy, high-pressure absorption spectroscopy measurements,and first-principles calculations, the pressure-induced lattice andelectronic structural evolutions of multilayer MnPS3 wereuncovered. A pressure-induced lifted symmetry (layer sliding) of multilayerMnPS(3) from the C2/m-staggeredP-dimer phase (phase I) to P3 1m aligned P-dimer phase (phase II) at 6.7 GPa was demonstrated, evidencedby the overlap of E-g (5) and A(1g) (3) modes under high pressure and further first-principles calculations.Meanwhile, the linearly decreased optical band gap with pressure indicatedthat the charge-transfer excitations that define the gap were confinedin intra-slab in nature regardless of the interlayer sliding. Further calculated band gap structure also suggested that no obvious electronicstructural phase transition occurred in multilayer MnPS3 during the pressure-induced phase transition of multilayer MnPS3 except from a decreased band gap with pressure. In addition,both the results of absorption spectroscopy measurements and first-principlescalculation demonstrated that multilayer MnPS3 remainedto be a direct band gap semiconductor up to 21.8 GPa. Our findingsare of great significance in expanding the application of compressiveMnPS(3) in photoelectric devices.

Abstract:Thanks to the development of experimental high-pressure techniques and methods for crystal-structure prediction based on quantum mechanics, in the past decade, numerous new compounds, mostly binary, with atypical compositions have been predicted, and some have been synthesized. Differing from conventional solid-state materials, many of these new compounds are comprised of various homonuclear chemical species, such as dimers, trimers, pentagonal and heptagonal rings, polymeric chains, atomic layers and 3D networks. Strikingly, it has been shown that pressure can alter the chemistry of an element by activating its (semi)core electrons, unoccupied orbitals and even the non-atom-centred quantum orbitals located on the interstitial sites, leading to many new surprising phenomena. This Review provides a summary of atypical compounds that result from the effects of high pressure on either the chemical bonds or the local orbitals. We describe various unusual chemical species and motifs, show how the chemical properties of the elements are altered under pressure and illustrate how compound formation is favoured even in situations in which chemical bonds are not formed. An extraordinary new picture of chemistry emerges as we piece together these unexpected high-pressure phenomena. In marked contrast to the previously held beliefs regarding the behaviour of solids under pressure, we are learning that the quantum-mechanical features of electrons, such as those that lead to the formation of directional bonds, inhomogeneous distributions of electrons and atoms, as well as variations in symmetry, might be magnified under pressure. We discuss the influence of these phenomena on future studies that will probe chemistry at higher pressures and explore more complex chemical compositions than those that have been studied to date.

First-Principles Study of High-Pressure Behavior of Solid β-HMX

Abstract:A first-principles plane-wave method with an ultrasoft pseudopotential scheme in the framework of the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) was used to calculate the lattice parameters, bulk modulus and its pressure derivative, energy band structures, density of states, phonon density of states, thermodynamic properties, and absorption spectra of solid beta-octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (beta-HMX). The current Study is focused on the thermodynamics and electronic properties that were not reported previously. The bulk modulus and its pressure derivative are also consistent with experimental data and other theoretical results. From the results for the band gaps and density of states, it was found that beta-HMX has the tendency to become a semiconductor with increasing pressure. As the temperature increases, the heat capacity, enthalpy, product of temperature and entropy, and Debye temperature all increase, whereas the free energy decreases. The optical absorption coefficients shift to higher frequencies/energics with increasing pressure. The present Study leads to a better understanding of how energetic materials respond to compression.
Computational insights into the structure and decomposition behaviors of 2,4,6-triamino-5-nitropyrimidine-1,3-dioxide under high pressure up to 10 GPa

Abstract:Context: Inspired by the recent successful synthesis of the energetic compound 2,4,6-triamino-5-nitropyrimidine-1,3-dioxide (ICM-102), which displayed a good balance between high energy and sensitivity, the response of the structure and decomposition behaviors of ICM-102 to high pressure was systematically investigated using first principle calculations. ICM-102 exhibited a graphite-like layer structure, with the c-axis and the a-axis mainly contributing to the distance between the molecular planes. As the pressure increased from 1 atm to 10 GPa, this distance decreased from 3.166 to 2.689 Ǻ. The hydrogen bonds had the most contribution to the non-covalent interactions within the same molecular planes, resulting in the b-axis discontinuity. However, van der Waals interactions gradually appeared between molecular planes as the pressure increased to 2.5 GPa. Based on the analysis of crystal orbitals, the distribution of π bonds and the Laplacian bond order (LBO), it was determined that the generation mechanism of H2O molecules involved the cleavage of N-Oc (coordinated oxygen atoms), followed by intermolecular hydrogen transfer reactions, and ultimately the formation of H2O molecules through competition with H atoms in the amino groups within the same molecules. More importantly, the pressure dependence of LBO values for N-Oc revealed that high pressure could inhibit the ICM-102 decomposition process due to reinforcing hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions. This work will deepen our understanding of the stability of ICM-102 under high pressure and provide a helpful reference for its potential detonation applications. Methods: All simulations, including geometry optimization and vibration analysis under quasi-hydrostatic pressure, were conducted using the CP2K code. The PBE function and the Goldk-Teter-Hutter (GTH) pseudopotential with the double-ζ-with-polarization (DZVP) basis set were employed. Additionally, the semiempirical dispersion correction D3 (BJ) was used to account for the intermolecular dispersion force. The simulations were performed under periodic boundary conditions, with a finest grid level cutoff set to 400 Ry for the Γ point. The Broyden-Flecher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) optimization method was used, with tighter convergence criteria applied for the subsequent calculations of infrared spectra. Finally, the wave-function analysis, such as non-covalent interaction and LBO, was conducted using the Multiwfn and VMD packages.
Periodic DFT study of structural transformations of cocrystal CL-20/MMI under high pressure

Abstract:The crystal and molecular structure, electronic properties, optical parameters, and elastic properties of a 1:2 hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20)/2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMI) cocrystal under 0 ~ 100 GPa hydrostatic pressure were calculated. The results show that the cocrystal CL-20/MMI undergoes three structural transitions at 72 GPa, 95 GPa, and 97 GPa, respectively, and the structural transition occurs in the part of the MMI compound. Structural mutations formed new bonds S1-S2, C2-C7, and N1C5 at 72GPa, 95 GPa, and 97 GPa, respectively. Similarly, the formation of new bonds is confirmed on the basis of an analysis of the changes in lattice constants, cell volumes, and partial densities of states (PDOS) for S1, S2, C2, C7, N1, and C3 at the corresponding pressures. The optical parameters show that the pressure makes the peaks of various optical parameters of CL-20/MMI larger, and the optical activity is enhanced. The optical parameters also confirm the structural mutation of CL-20/MMI under the corresponding pressure.

Abstract:The phase transition of β-HMX crystal has been widely studied under high pressure, but the microscopic transition mechanism is not sufficient understood. In this article, we perform a series of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations focusing on structure deformation and corresponding vibration spectra resolving of β-HMX at 0-40 GPa. Several typical pressure-induced phase transition processes are confirmed by analyzing the chemical bond, dihedral angle, charge transfer and IR, Raman spectra. The corresponding relationship between molecular structure and spectral signal is constructed through the partial spectra calculations of special functional groups within HMX molecule. The anisotropic effects of different groups on initial structural phase transition are uncovered. The equatorial C-N and axial N-N bonds have the largest compression ratio as pressure increase, which are the intrinsic factor for the initiation of structure transformation. The C-N molecular ring plays an important role in the whole phase transition process. In addition, the phase transition of β→ζ is also closely relevant with the deformation of NO2, while that of ζ→ε is induced by the axial N-NO2 group. As for the higher pressure phase transition, the synergetic effect of N-NO2, CH2 groups and molecular ring becomes more considerable.

Abstract:In this article,the first-principles method based on the density functional theory(DFT) was employed to investigate the structural and electronic properties of ZnO under unixial pressure along c-axis. It was found that the properties of ZnO crystal are very sensitive to the applied pressures.When pressure increases from 0 to 6 GPa,both energy band gap and lattice parameters show nearly linearly changes against pressure.At higher pressures(6 GPa to 10 GPa),a graphitelike phase with a structure between Wurtzite and high pressure NaCl phase occurs.Accordingly,significant changes in crystal structures and energy band structures were also observed in association with this phase transition.

Abstract:The 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105) is a newly energetic material with an excellent performance and low sensitivity and has attracted considerable attention. On the basis of the dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D), the high-pressure responses of vibrational properties, in conjunction with structural properties, are used to understand its intermolecular interactions and anisotropic properties under hydrostatic and uniaxial compressions. At ambient and pressure conditions, the DFT-D scheme could reasonably describe the structural parameters of LLM-105. The hydrogen bond network, resembling a parallelogram shape, links two adjacent molecules and contributes to the structure stability under hydrostatic compression. The anisotropy of LLM-105 is pronounced, especially for Raman spectra under uniaxial compression. Specifically, the red-shifts of modes are obtained for [100] and [010] compressions, which are caused by the pressure-induced enhance of the strength of the hydrogen bonds. Importantly, coupling modes and discontinuous Raman shifts are observed along [010] and [001] compressions, which are related to the intramolecular vibrational redistribution and possible structural transformations under uniaxial compressions. Overall, the detailed knowledge of the high-pressure responses of LLM-105 is established from the atomistic level. Uniaxial compression responses provide useful insights for realistic shock conditions.

Abstract:The crystal structures, transition paths, elastic properties, and electronic structures are investigated comprehensively by first-principles calculations for ZnO. The sequence of the cohesion energy in ZnO phases is predicted as cesium-chloride (B2) < lead-oxide (B10) < tungsten-carbides (B h ) < nickel-arsenide (B8 1 ) < rock-salt (B1) < germanium-phosphide (GeP) < boron-nitride (B k ) < beryllium-oxide (BCT) < zinc-blende (B3) < wurtzite (B4) via density functional theory (DFT), where B4 is the most stable structure and B2 is the best high-pressure candidate, respectively. The structural transition paths are pressure-induced along the tetragonal and hexagonal in ZnO, where the intermediate phases are BCT, GeP and B10 along the tetragonal paths and B8 1 , B k and B h phases along the hexagonal paths. Furthermore, the results of elastic constants indicate that the whole mechanical performance decreases with ascending pressure for the B1, B2 and B3 phases in ZnO. Nevertheless, the elastic constants C 11 , C 12 , C 13 and C 33 all improve for the B4, B8 1 , GeP, B k and B h phases, revealing a high resistance to deformation along the , and directions. Finally, the bandgap is corrected successfully for ZnO structures with the DFT + U approach, indicating that the structures are all wide-bandgap semiconductors, where the B3, B4, B8 1 , BCT and B k structures are direct bandgap, and the B1, B2, B10, GeP and B h structures are indirect.
