Abstract:Objective This study was to evaluate whether resin luting system could improve the fracture resistance of endodontically treated incisors with prefabricated and cast metal posts.Methods Fourty intact maxillary central incisors after endodontical treatments were randomly assigned to four groups of 10 teeth each. The teeth were then restored with prefabricated titanium alloy posts or cast nickel-chromium post-and-cores and metal-ceramic crowns. The posts and crowns were cemented with either adhesive composite resin luting system or glass ionomer cement. All restored teeth were thermocycled for 5000 cycles (5℃/55℃) as a fatigue test. Each specimen was secured in a universal testing machine. A compressive load was applied at an angle of 135 degrees to the long-axis of the tooth with a crosshead speed of 1.5mm/s until initial fracture. Fracture loads and modes (repairable or catastrophic) were recorded.Results The fracture load was 499.82±168.90N in the group of Ti-alloy post with resin cement (group 1) and was 388.98±125.22N in the group of the same posts with glass ionomer cement (group 2); The fracture load in the group of cast post with resin cement (group 3) was 412.55±99.29N,while 337.41±121.18N in the group of the same posts with glass ionomer cement (group 4). The repairable fracture observed from Group 1 to Group 4 was 40%, 20%, 20% and 30% respectively. No significant difference was found for fracture load and fracture mode between groups with different luting agents (P>0.05).Conclusion It indicates that adhesive composite resin luting system might not significantly improve the fracture resistance of the pulpless incisors restored with metal posts.
Effects of pretreatment in post space on the bonding strength of self-adhesive resin cement to fiber posts

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The bonding interface of resin cements with dentin is unstables, therefore, improvement on the bonding strength is of great significance. OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects of different pretreatments to post space on bonding strength of the self-adhesive resin cement EmbraceCoreTM Resin Cement to fiber posts after phosphoric acid etching or self-etching. METHODS:Twenty-five human mandible canines or premolars with single-rooted canal were selected. After conventional root canal treatment and post space preparation, they were randomly divided into five groups (n=5 per group):group I (control group):0.9%normal saline irrigation;group II:etching with 35%phosphoric acid for 15 seconds;group III:self-etching with CLEARFILTM SE BOND binder for 20 seconds;group IV:etching with 35%phosphoric acid for 15 seconds and bonding with single bong 2;group V:self-etching with CLEARFILTM SE BOND binder for 20 seconds and bonding with CLEARFILTM SE BOND binder. Fiber posts were edusing self-adhesive resin cement EmbraceCoreTM Resin Cement. The thin-slice push-out test was performed to record the bonding strengths, and the failure modes of fiber posts were observed by stereomicroscope. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The bond strength of groups I-V were as fol ows:(8.66±2.43), (7.05±3.0), (7.37±2.83), (9.88±2.9), and (10.04±2.86) MPa. Groups II, IV and V showed significantly different bond strength from the group I (P<0.05), but there were no significant differences between groups III and I (P>0.05). The main failure models in the groups I, II and III were A1 and A2, and less B1 and B2 appeared. The failure modes in the groups IV and V also focused on the A1 and A2, but B1 and B2 increased gradual y. These results indicate that neither the pretreatments by phosphoric acid etching nor by self-etching in root canal dentin can improve the bonding strength of EmbraceCoreTM Resin Cement to fiber posts, but the use of binder relative to phosphoric acid etching or self-ctching is helpful.
Influence of Proanthocyanidins Combined with Ethanol-Wet Bonding on the Bonding Quality of Fibre Posts to Root Dentine.

Abstract:This study evaluated the influence of a bonding approach using proanthocyanidins (PAs) combined with ethanol-wet bonding (EWB) and a hydrophobic adhesive on the bonding quality of fibre posts. After endodontic treatment and post-space preparation, 72 single-rooted extracted human teeth were etched, thoroughly rinsed, and then treated using the following procedures (n = 24 teeth per group): group 1, no pretreatment; group 2, pretreatment with absolute ethanol three times, for 30 s each time; or group 3, pretreatment with absolute ethanol solution containing 5% PAs three times, for 30 s each time. Six teeth per group were dried according to a dry and a wet drying protocol and then observed using field emission-scanning electron microscopy. The remaining 18 teeth in each group were cemented with fibre posts: All-Bond 3 and Duo-Link cement were used for group 1; and hydrophobic adhesive and Duo-Link cement were used for groups 2 and 3. Push-out bond strength, failure mode, and nanoleakage were evaluated immediately and after collagenase treatment. Higher push-out bond strength and less nanoleakage were observed in the two ethanol-pretreatment groups, regardless of storage conditions. Teeth pretreated with PAs + ethanol exhibited significantly higher push-out bond strength after collagenase treatment than did teeth pretreated with ethanol alone. Within the limits of this study, the bonding approach of PAs combined with EWB and a hydrophobic adhesive synergistically improved the durability of fibre post bonds.
Bonding Quality of Etch-and-Rinse Adhesives in Root Canals Upon Different Pretreatments.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To evaluate the effect of ethanol-wet/hydrophobic resin bonding (EWB) in a simplified dehydration protocol with ultrasonic agitation (UA) of etch-and-rinse adhesives on the bonding quality in root canals.MATERIALS AND METHODS:56 extracted human maxillary central incisors were divided into 4 groups (n = 14) according to the procedures of bonding fiber posts in root canals: A: conventional etch-and-rinse adhesive as control (All-Bond 3, Bisco); B: EWB in a simplified dehydration protocol, ie, after 100% ethanol dehydration (30 s, 3 times), ethanol/hydrophobic resin (50% bis-GMA + TEG-DMA, 50% ethanol) was applied into the root canal as a primer, followed by applying pure co-monomer adhesive; C: EWB in a standard dehydration protocol, ie, ascending concentrations of ethanol (50%, 70%, 80%, 90%) for 30 s and 100% ethanol (30 s, 3 times) for dehydration, with the remaining procedure conducted as in group B; D: EWB in a simplified dehydration protocol under ultrasonic agitation (UA), ie, 100% ethanol under ultrasonic agitation for 30 s, ethanol/hydrophobic resin as a primer applied under UA for 60 s, followed by the application of pure co-monomer adhesive. All the specimens were cemented with Duo-Link (Bisco) and immersed in artificial saliva for 24 h or thermocycled for 10,000 times. Bond strength, failure mode, and nanoleakage were evaluated. Hybrid layer and resin tags were also observed with SEM. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA (bond strength) and Kruskal-Wallis analysis (nanoleakage, resin tag score) (α = 0.05).RESULTS:Significant differences existed in bond strength (p = 0.02) and nanoleakage (p = 0.02) among groups. After 24 h and after thermocycling, group D exhibited higher bond strengths than did group B (p = 0.02 after 24 h, p = 0.03 after aging) and group A (p = 0.06 after 24 h, p = 0.04 after aging). Bond strength and nanoleakage showed no significant difference after aging (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in resin tag scores between any of the groups, but the apical third of the roots exhibited the lowest score (p = 0.001).CONCLUSION:The synergistic effects of the two pretreatment strategies (EWB in a simplified dehydration protocol and UA) improved the bonding quality. UA had a positive effect on the adhesion of the etch-and-rinse adhesives, when EWB in a simplified procedure was applied into the root canal.

Abstract:Statement of the problem: Achieving a reliable bond to root canal dentin is a subject ofongoing research. Improving the bond strength between root dentin and fiber posts through differentirrigation materials and techniques used during post space preparation has been suggested; yet,there is a few data regarding the irrigation materials and application techniques that could be usedto achieve an optimum bond.Purpose: The aim of this invitro study was to evaluate the effect of different irrigation materials(NaOCl + EDTA and Qmix) and application techniques (syringe, passive ultrasonic irrigation, XPfinisher) on the push-out bond strength of fiber posts to root dentin.Materials and methods: Forty eight human premolars, with straight root canals and averageroot length of 17±1 mm were selected. The clinical crowns were cut 2mm above the cementoenameljunction. Root canal treatment was done with ProTaper universal rotary instruments to size F4 andthen obturated with lateral condensation technique and AdSeal sealer. Teeth were then stored indistilled water for 7 days at 37˚C after sealing of the access cavity with temporary filling free fromeugenol. For each tooth, post space preparation was done using gates glidden drills leaving 4-5 mmof gutta percha as apical seal. FibreKleer post tapered drill corresponding to the glass fiber postsize was used to remove any residual root filling. The prepared roots were equally and randomlydivided into two main groups (n = 18) before post cementation as follows; Group I: Irrigation with10 ml of 2.6% NaOCL over 60 seconds followed by 5 ml EDTA for another 60 seconds, Group II:Irrigation with 3 ml Q-mix for 60 seconds. Each of the two main groups was further divided into 3subgroups, Subgroup A (n = 6): Conventional syringe irrigation (IA, IIA), Subgroup B (n = 6):Passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) was performed for 60 seconds (IB, IIB), Subgroup C (n = 6):XP finisher was used with a torque-controlled motor according to the manufacturer’s instructions.The canal was filled with irrigant and the finisher was operated for 60 seconds using slow andgentle in-and-out movements (IC, IIC). All posts were tried-in, cleaned with alcohol, and thensilanized with ceramic primer for 60 seconds then air dried. Cementation was done using Rely XUnicem 2 self adhesive resin cement.After the luting procedure, the coronal part of the posts was covered completely with resinmodifiedglass ionomer cement and the roots were stored in distilled water for 7 days at 37˚C.Roots were embedded in epoxy resin and transversely sectioned perpendicular to the long axis ofthe root with an Isomet machine. It was pre-set to serially obtain six specimens (2 mm ± 0.1) thick,where two specimens corresponded to each root third. For push-out testing, each specimen wasmounted in a custom made loading fixture then subjected to compressive loading with the apicalsurface upwards at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min via a computer controlled testing machine.The maximum failure load was recorded in Newton and converted into MPa. Two teeth as arepresentative of each subgroup were split longitudinally after post space preparation and irrigation,and smear layer was examined using scanning electron microscope at 1, 4.5, and 8mm levels fromthe apical to the coronal third of the post space at 1000 magnification. Data were recorded, tabulatedand statistically analysed.Results: Regarding the push-out bond strength results; it was found that regardless of applicationtechniques or radicular regions, there was no significant difference in the push-out bond strengthbetween both irrigation solutions as proven by three-way ANOVA test, where (NaOCl + EDTA ≥Q mix). Irrespective to irrigation solutions or radicular regions, there was significant difference inthe push-out bond strength between application techniques as demonstrated by three-way ANOVAtest , where (PUI ≥ XP > Syringe). Pair-wise Turkey’s post-hoc showed no significant difference inthe push-out bond strength between (PUI and XP). Regardless of irrigation solutions or applicationtechniques; there was no significant difference in the push-out bond strength between radicularregions as verified by three-way ANOVA test where (cervical ≥ apical ≥ middle). Regarding thesmear layer marking; it was found that there was non-significant difference between both irrigationsolutions as proven by Chi square test where (NaOCL+EDTA > Qmix). There was also nonsignificantdifference between irrigation application techniques as demonstrated by Chi square testwhere (Syringe ≥ PUI≥ XP). In addition, there was non-significant difference between radicularregions as verified by Chi square test where (apical ≥ middle ≥ cervical).Conclusions Within the limitations of this study it was concluded that:1. Q mix irrigation solution decreased the bond strength between root dentin and fiber postswhen self adhesive luting agent was used.2. The use of XP finisher and passive ultrasonic irrigation as irrigant activation devicesimproved the bond strength between root dentin and fiber posts compared to conventionalsyringe irrigation.
Bond strength of prefabricated and CAD-CAM milled glass fiber post-and-cores luted with conventional, universal, and self-adhesive composite resin cement

Abstract:Statement of problem Little is known about the effect of different composite resin cements on the bond strength of prefabricated and milled glass fiber post-and-cores. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the push-out bond strengths of root dentin and standard, relined, or computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) glass fiber post-and-cores luted with conventional, universal, or self-adhesive composite resin cement. Material and methods Post spaces were prepared in 90 premolars. Standard and relined prefabricated and CAD-CAM-milled glass fiber post-and-cores were luted with conventional (RelyX ARC; 3M ESPE), universal (RelyX Ultimate; 3M ESPE), and self-adhesive (RelyX U200; 3M ESPE) composite resin cement (n=10). All specimens were thermally aged (5000 cycles at 5°C and 55°C with a 20-second dwell time) and mechanical fatigue (1 000 000 cycles at 2 Hz, 50-N load). The specimens were sectioned perpendicularly to the root long axis into 1-mm-thick sections (apical, middle, and cervical root thirds), the push-out bond strength was determined, and the mode of failure recorded. Data were submitted to the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Bonferroni-Dunn multiple comparison test (α=.05). Results Push-out bond strength values did not differ ( P >.05) among posts at the same root thirds. Standard posts showed higher bond strength than CAD-CAM at the apical third for data grouped by composite resin cements ( P <.001). The cervical root thirds had higher bond strength than the apical thirds ( P <.05). The cervical, middle, and apical root thirds showed decreasing bond strength values for each type of post for data grouped by composite resin cement ( P <.001). Adhesive failures at the dentin-cement interface were predominant. Conclusions The type of posts and cements did not affect the bond strength of glass fiber posts. The cervical root thirds had better bonding performance than the apical thirds.

Abstract:The effect of post-space treatment on the retention of fiber posts in different root regions was evaluated using two self-etching systems. Post spaces were prepared in extracted premolars and then the root canals were subjected to one of the following post-space treatments: (i) water irrigation (control); (ii) etching with 35% phosphoric acid for 30 s; (iii) irrigation with 17% EDTA followed by 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); and (iv) ultrasonic agitation associated with 17% EDTA and 5.25% NaOCl irrigating solutions. The dentin surfaces were examined under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after different post-space treatments. Fiber posts were then luted in the treated roots using resin cement with either Clearfil SE Bond or Clearfil DC Bond, and the thin-slice push-out test was performed. Scanning electron microscopy showed that all the post-space treatments tested were effective in removal of the smear layer of debris, or sealer/gutta-percha remnants, on the root canal. The apical push-out strength was affected by post-space treatment. Both 35% phosphoric acid etching and ultrasonic agitation in combination with EDTA/NaOCl irrigation improved the apical push-out strength of the fiber post, regardless of the type of self-etching system. A solo irrigation with an EDTA/NaOCl solution resulted in a lower apical push-out strength compared with the other two experimental groups.

Pretreatment of Root Dentin Using Photon-Induced Photoacoustic Streaming, Photodynamic Therapy, and Riboflavin with EDTA as a Final Irrigant to Improve Bond Integrity of Glass Fiber Post

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the outcome of post space disinfection using Er,Cr:YSGG laser (ECYL), riboflavin photosensitizer (RFP), and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) along with ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) as final irrigant on the bond values of glass fiber post (GFP) to the canal wall. Materials and methods: Forty human mandibular premolars were subjected to root canal treatment after decoronation till the cementoenamel junction. Post space was prepared using a Gates-Glidden drill leaving 4 mm of gutta perch at the apical third of the root section. Random allocation of samples was performed into four groups based on the post space disinfection (n = 10 each): Group 1: 1% RFP and 17% EDTA, group 2: 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 17% EDTA (control), group 3: PIPS and 17% EDTA, and group 4: ECYL and 17% EDTA. GFP was luted using Rely X Unicem. A universal testing machine and stereomicroscope were used to assess the push-out bond strength (PBS) and failure mode, respectively. Analysis of variance determined the PBS amid different experimental groups at three root levels. Multiple group comparison using means of tested groups was identified using post hoc Tukey. Results: The coronal third of group 2 (5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA) demonstrated the highest PBS (8.83 ± 0.11 MPa). However, the lowest bond integrity (4.15 ± 0.52 MPa) was displayed in an apical third of group 1 (RFP +17% EDTA). The intergroup comparison revealed that 5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA at all three levels demonstrated comparable outcomes of PBS with PIPS +17% EDTA and ECYL +17% EDTA specimens (p > 0.05). However, riboflavin +17% EDTA demonstrated the lowest bond strength (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Er,Cr: YSGG and PIPS in combination with 17% EDTA demonstrated comparable outcomes of bond score with those of conventional gold standard irrigation regime 5.25% NaOCl.
Comparative Study of Bond Strength of Four Resin Cements Used for Endodontic Glass-Fibre Posts

Abstract:Objective: To assess the interfacial bond strength of total-etch, two self-etch and self-adhesive resin cement luted endodontic glass-fibre posts.Methods: Sixteen recently extracted human teeth were collected for this study. The teeth were randomly and equally allocated to four groups: group 1, Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) in combination with RelyX ARC (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany); group 2, ED Primer with Panavia F (Kuraray Co., Okayama, Japan); group 3, ParaBond with ParaCem (Coltene/Whaledent, Altstatten, Switzerland); and group 4, RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). Fibre posts were cemented in endodontically treated teeth within the groups. One week later, the cemented posts in each group were processed for thin-slice pushout tests after thermal cycling (1000 cycles, 5/55 degrees C).Results: The interfacial bond strength was not different among the four groups. The bond strength was significantly higher at the coronal third of the root canal than at the middleapical third for group 4. The rest of the groups did not show regional differences in bond strength.Conclusion: Single Bond/RelyX ARC, Panavia F, ParaCem, and RelyX Unicem demonstrated an equal potential for adhesion of fibre posts to intraradicular dentine.
Effect of Crosslinked Chitosan Nanoparticles on the Bonding Quality of Fiber Posts in Root Canals.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To investigate the effects of root-canal dentin pretreatment with the crosslinker EDC combined with chitosan nanoparticles (Csnp) on the bonding quality of fiber posts in root canals in terms of bond strength, nanoleakage, quantification of collagen degradation, and degree of conversion (DC) of adhesive.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Forty-eight single-rooted teeth were prepared endodontically and etched using UNI-ETCH (Bisco) as per the adhesive procedure for fiber posts. They were randomly divided into three groups before adhesive (All-Bond 3) application, according to different pretreatments: a. immersed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde for 24 h; b. treated with Csnp solution under ultrasonic agitation for 60 s and immersed in EDC crosslinker for 24 h; c. without treatment (control). Bond strength, nanoleakage, DC within the interface, and collagen fiber degradation were evaluated.RESULTS:The pretreatments had a significant influence on the bonding stability of fiber posts in root canals, but not on the degree of conversion (p = 0.552). Enzymatic degradation significantly influenced bond strength for all groups (p = 0.001), with the greatest effect found in group c. The amount of amino acids released from the adhesive interface differed significantly between groups after hydrolysis and enzymatic degradation (p = 0.000); group c released the highest amount of amino acids.CONCLUSIONS:Csnp binding to dentin in combination with EDC reduced degradation of dentinal collagen and improved the stability of the adhesive interface without jeopardizing adhesive polymerization.
Effect of Dentin Irrigants on Push-Out Bond Strength in Resin Cementation Protocols for Fiber Posts in Endodontically Treated Teeth: An In Vitro Study

Abstract:The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of different endodontic irrigants and adhesive systems on the resin bond strength of fiber post cementation. In total, 144 single-rooted, unrestored human teeth were endodontically treated and randomly divided into 12 groups according to four endodontic irrigants (distilled water as control; EDTA 17%; NaOCl 5%; chlorhexidine digluconate 2%) and three different adhesive/resin cement systems (etch-and-rinse: orthophosphoric acid, Parabond® A+B/Paracore®; self-etch: ParaBond® Non-Rinse Conditioner, Parabond® A+B/Paracore®; Universal: ClearfilTM Universal Bond/ClearfilTM DC Core Plus). Forty-eight hours after post cementation, ten teeth from each group were cross-sectioned into three discs (cervical, middle and apical regions). Thirty specimens of each group (n = 30) were submitted to a push-out test at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The remaining two teeth of each group were sectioned in the same manner, and the resin–dentin interface was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results were statistically analyzed with the ANOVA test and Tukey's test (p 0.01). The combination of NaOCl 5% and ClearfilTM Universal Bond reduced the adhesive strength (p < 0.01). The NaOCl 5%, in relation to other irrigants, significantly decreased the push-out bond strength.

Abstract:The effect of different post space irrigants on smear layer removal and dentin bond strength was evaluated. Sixty-six extracted sound maxillary central incisors were endodontically treated. After post space preparation, the teeth were assigned to three groups of 22 teeth each. The teeth of these three groups were irrigated for 1 min with 17% ethylenediaminetetracetic acid (EDTA) (group 1), 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (group 2), or 0.9% sodium chloride (NaCl) (group 3). In each group, eight specimens were split longitudinally for smear layer evaluation, and the other fourteen specimens were filled with a self-etching adhesive system (Panavia F). Four of 14 specimens of each group were prepared for evaluation of the resin-dentin interdiffusion zone (RDIZ) and resin tags, and the other 10 specimens were serially sectioned for push-out test analysis. Smear layer removal and bond strength were affected by different post space irrigants. EDTA removed the smear layer extremely effectively and, as a result, improved the bond strength at each region (apical, middle, and coronal) of the roots. Resin tag formation and the RDIZ were also affected by different irrigants and in accordance with bond strength. Therefore, removal of the smear layer use a self-etching luting system plays an important role in bonding effectiveness.
Effect of polyacrylic acid pretreatment on the microtensile bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement and resin modified glass ionomer cement to dentin

Abstract:Aim of the study: to evaluate in vitro the effect of dentin surface pretreatment with polyacrylic acid on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of self-adhesive resin cements and resin modified glass ionomer luting cements (RMGIC). Materials and Methods: The occlusal enamel of 16 teeth was removed perpendicular to the long axis of teeth to expose flat dentin surface at a standardized depth which is 1mm apical to DEJ. The teeth were randomly divided into 4 groups according to cementation protocol of indirect resin composite blocks namely; RelyX-Unicem with no pretreatment, RelyX-Unicem with polyacrylic acid pretreatment, FujiCEM (RMGIC) with no pretreatment and FujiCEM (RMGIC) with polyacrylic acid pretreatment. The restored teeth were mounted on the cutting machine, sectioned into a series of 1 mm2 thick. The sticks were stressed to failure under tension using Universal Testing Machine to record the microtensile bond strength. The collected data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey’s test.Results: The highest mean value was detected in RelyX-Unicem with no pretreatment, followed by Fujicem with polyacrylic acid pretreatment; whereas the lowest value was recorded in Fujicem with no pretreatment. Using two ways ANOVA revealed that material type had a statistically significant effect (p=0.003), with a higher mean value in RelyX-Unicem. However, pretreatment had a non-significant effect (p=0.510). The interaction of the two variables had a statistically significant effect (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Polyacrylic acid adversely affects the microtensile bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement; however it improves bond strength of RMGIC.

Abstract:B a c k g r o u n d: Studies on the effect of root canal rinsing protocols on fiber post bonding to dentin are inconclusive. This study reports investigation of this topic. O b j e c t i v e s: to determine effects of irrigation protocol by means of a push-out test on the strength of adhesion between the post and dentin in an in vitro study. Materials and Method: Thirty human single-rooted teeth were prepared using hand instruments and the step-back technique, filled with gutta-percha, sealed with AH Plus (Dentsply), and divided into three groups: A: rinsed with NaCl; B: rinsed with 2% chlorhexidine (CHX); C: not rinsed before cementation of posts. The fiber posts were set using RelyX and Built-it. The tooth roots were sliced and the push-out test was performed. The area of contact between the post and dentin was calculated and the destroying force was established. The results were statistically analyzed. R e s u l t s: The mean adhesive strength was 10.69 MPa in group A, 16.33 MPa in group B, and 16.72 MPa in C. The adhesive strength in group B and C was statistically significantly higher than in group A (p = 0.0016, ANOVA). Conclusion: Rinsing root canals with CHX seems to be the most effective method prior to setting a fiber post.

Abstract:Root-filled teeth that received fiber posts most frequently fail at the adhesive interface between resin cement and dentin. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser and/or sodium ascorbate (SA) on bond strength, microhardness of dentin, and penetration depth of cement into dentinal tubules. Forty-eight bovine incisor roots were endodontically treated, post spaces were prepared and equally divided into four groups (n = 12): G1—distilled water (control); G2—10% SA (10 min); G3—Er:YAG laser (150 mJ/4 Hz/40 s), and G4—Er:YAG laser + 10% SA. Glass fiber posts were cemented and roots sectioned into slices. In the first slice, the push-out bond strength (MPa) and failures were analyzed by confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The second slice was subjected to microhardness test (KHN) and CLSM to assess the cement penetration. ANOVA and Tukey test were used for bond strength and microhardness data and Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests for the cement penetration (α = .05). The SA-treated samples had higher bond strength (10.02 ± 5.45a), similar to Er:YAG laser (9.91 ± 4.62a) and Er:YAG laser + SA (8.09 ± 4.07a). The least values (P < .05) were found on control (4.02 ± 2.39b). Significant differences were observed on root thirds (P < .05): cervical > middle > apical. There was a predominance of adhesive failures. The microhardness test revealed no differences between groups (P > .05). The experimental groups (G2, G3, and G4) had highest penetration into dentinal tubules when compared to the control (G1). Dentin pretreatments with Er:YAG laser or SA improved bond strength of cement-post-dentin interfaces; however, no synergistic effect of both treatments combined was observed.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the push-out bond strengths of prefabricated glass-fiber posts (Beijing Oya Biomaterials) with polydopamine functionalized to root dentin using two different resin cements (Paracore and RelyX Unicem) in different root regions (cervical, middle, and apical). Materials and Methods: Forty extracted human, single-rooted teeth were endodontically treated and a 9-mm post space was prepared in each tooth with post drills provided by the manufacturer. Specimens were then randomly assigned into four groups (n = 10 per group), depending on the adhesive system and post surface treatment used: group IA (Paracore + polydopamine); group IB (Paracore + control); group IIA (RelyX Unicem + polydopamine); group IIB (RelyX Unicem + control). Following post cementation, the specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 C for 7 days. The push-out test was performed using a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min), and the failure modes were examined with a stereomicroscope. Data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA (p = 0.05). Results: Bond strengths (mean +/- SD) were: 7.909 +/- 3.166 MPa (group IA), 4.675 +/- 2.170 MPa (group IB), 8.186 +/- 2.766 MPa (group IIA), 4.723 +/- 2.084 MPa (group IIB). The bond strength of polydopamine groups was significantly higher than one of the control groups (p < 0.0001). No significant difference was found in the micro push-out bond strengths between the two resin cement groups or the root regions (p > 0.05). Stereomicroscopic analysis showed a higher percentage of adhesive than cohesive failures in all groups. Conclusion: Surface polydopamine functionalization was confirmed to be a reliable method for improving the bond strength of resin luting agents to fiber posts. The bond strength of Paracore to fiber posts was not significantly different from that of RelyX Unicem, and considering its convenient application, Paracore can be recommended.

Abstract:Final root canal disinfectants Temoporfin, Femtosecond (FS) laser, and Chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) on marten hardness (MH), modulus of elasticity (EIT), and push-out bond strength (PBS) of glass fiber reinforced post (GFRP) to the root dentin. Sixty caries-free single-rooted human premolars were decoronated and a root canal was performed followed by post space. The specimens were then arbitrarily allocated into groups according to the final disinfectant used. Group 1: 17% EDTA, Group 2: Temoporfin, Group 3: FS laser and Group 4: Chitosan NPs. Evaluation of mechanical properties (MH and EIT) was performed on five samples from each group. Ten samples from each group were bonded with GFRP and sectioned. A universal testing machine and stereomicroscope were used to analyze the PBS and failure mode. Means and standard deviations (SD) of MH, EiT, and PBS were assessed using ANOVA and post hoc Tukey. The highest values of MH and EiT were revealed by 5.25% NaOCl+Chitosan NP samples. The lowest scores of MH and EiT were presented by samples irrigated with 5.25% NaOCl+17% EDTA. The coronal section of samples treated with 5.25% NaOCl+Chitosan NPs showed the highest EBS. Chitosan NPs and FS laser have proved to be valuable alternatives to EDTA as both improved PBS without deteriorating the MH and EiT.

Abstract:Background: Glass fiber posts is the gold standard for the treatment of endodontically treated teeth with insufficient coronal tooth structure. Although it offers better retention and stress distribution when used, debonding is still the most common mode of failure for glass fiber posts. To overcome this problem, multiple surface treatments were tried to modify the post surface either chemically or mechanically to improve the post adhesion to resin cements. Objectives: To evaluate the pull-out bond strength of glass fiber posts to root dentin after different surface treatments using air-borne particle abrasion, diode laser and Er-Cr:YSGG laser. Materials and Methods: Forty freshly extracted single rooted teeth were root canal treated and divided into four groups according to surface treatment of the post: (Control, air borne-particle abrasion with alumina-oxide particles, irradiation with diode laser and irradiation with Er-Cr:YSGG). Pull-out test was done using a universal testing machine and the mode of failure of each sample was inspected under a stereomicroscope. Results: The Er-Cr:YSGG laser irradiation group showed the highest statistically significant bond strength value among all groups. Diode laser group showed the least bond strength value among all other groups significantly. No significant difference was found between air-borne particle abrasion and control groups. Conclusion: Er-Cr:YSGG laser irradiation improved the pull-out bond strength of the glass fiber post to root dentin compared to diode laser and air-borne particle abrasion.
