Abstract:Abstract The growth of dendrites on lithium metal electrodes is problematic because it causes irreversible capacity loss and safety hazards. Localised high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) can form a mechanically stable solid-electrolyte interphase and prevent uneven growth of lithium metal. However, the optimal physicochemical properties of LHCEs have not been clearly determined which limits the choice to fluorinated non-solvating cosolvents (FNSCs). Also, FNSCs in LHCEs raise environmental concerns, are costly, and may cause low cathodic stability owing to their low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level, leading to unsatisfactory cycle life. Here, we spectroscopically measured the Li + solvation ability and miscibility of candidate non-fluorinated non-solvating cosolvents (NFNSCs) and identified the suitable physicochemical properties for non-solvating cosolvents. Using our design principle, we proposed NFNSCs that deliver a coulombic efficiency up to 99.0% over 1400 cycles. NMR spectra revealed that the designed NFNSCs were highly stable in electrolytes during extended cycles. In addition, solvation structure analysis by Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculation of Li + binding energy suggested that the low ability of these NFNSCs to solvate Li + originates from the aromatic ring that allows delocalisation of electron pairs on the oxygen atom.

Abstract:Abstract Lithium–ion solvation governs the performance of lithium metal anode (LMA) by tuning its interfacial stability. Solvation degree is modulated by adopting fluorinated non-solvating cosolvents (FNSC) to induce anion-rich solvation structure which is beneficial in constructing mechanically stable interface to suppress lithium dendrite. However, FNSC exhibits low cathodic stability owing to their low lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level, aggravating long-term cycling of LMA. We establish that spectroscopically measured Lewis basicity and polarity are critical parameters for designing optimal non-solvating cosolvents. Non-fluorinated non-solvating cosolvents (NFNSC) proposed by our design rule (i.e. anisole, ethoxybenzene and furan) delivered 99.0 % coulombic efficiency over 1400 cycles. In these molecules, the aromatic ring delocalizes oxygen electron pairs and lowers solvation capability, confirmed by electrochemical cycling, Raman spectroscopy, and DFT binding energy calculation. Finally, the quantification of remaining NFNSC in the electrolytes using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy proves their reductive stability for extended cycles.

Abstract:The advancement of liquid electrolytes in Li-metal batteries is an important strategy to realize a robust and uniform solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the Li metal anode while simultaneously achieving high oxidative stability and addressing the shortcomings of traditional carbonate and ether-based electrolytes suffering from side reactions and high-voltage decomposition, respectively. To circumvent these challenges, here, a fluorinated dioxolane-based cyclic co-solvent, that is 2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (TTD), is developed. After pairing 1.5 M lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) with TTD and 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME), the 1.5 M LiFSI-8TTD-2DME electrolyte exhibits remarkable oxidation stability up to 6 V and a Coulombic efficiency of 99.4% over 210 cycles at 3 mA cm–2 with a cut-off capacity of 3 mA h cm–2 in the Li|Cu half-cell originating from efficient regulation of the electrolyte solvation structure and consequent anion-derived inorganic SEI layer formation. Full cells with advanced electrolytes, using 20 μm of Li foil paired with the NCM811 cathode by a negative and positive capacity ratio (N/P) of 2.5, achieve 75% capacity retention after 160 cycles at 0.5 C. Furthermore, even at an ultra-high charge cut-off voltage of 4.7 V, the Li|NCM811 full cell still realizes 80% retention at 0.5 C after 100 cycles.

Abstract:A new single-solvent electrolyte system comprising lithium bis(fluorosuflonyl) imide (LiFSI) and β-fluorinated sulfone (TFPMS) was designed to enable very stable long-term cycling of high-voltage lithium-ion batteries. Compared to other fluorinated solvents such as α-fluorinated sulfone (FMES) and fluorinated carbonate (FEMC), which are prone to reduction on the graphite anode, the LiFSI-TFPMS system displayed outstanding compatibility with graphite. While regular carbonate and sulfone from the LiFSI electrolyte system are compatible with the graphite anode, their high solvating power not only induces severe corrosion on the aluminum cathode current collector at high voltage, but also renders a low aggregation level at a normal salt concentration (about 1.0 M), resulting in the formation of an unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the graphite anode. Owing to the low solvating power of TFPMS, the aggregation level of the LiFSI-TFPMS system is relatively high even at normal salt concentration, which not only facilitates the formation of a robust SEI by the sacrificial decomposition of LiFSI, but also suppresses the aluminum corrosion of the LiFSI electrolyte system at high voltage. Together with the high intrinsic anodic stability of TFPMS, the superior cycling performance of graphite||LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cells was achieved by employing the non-flammable LiFSI-TFPMS single-solvent electrolyte system.

Abstract:Highly concentrated electrolytes (HCEs) significantly improve the stability of lithium metal anodes, but applications are often impeded by their limitation of density, viscosity, and cost. Here, fluorobenzene (FB), an economical hydrocarbon with low density and low viscosity, is demonstrated as a bifunctional cosolvent to obtain a novel FB diluted highly concentrated electrolyte (FB‐DHCE). First, the addition of FB suppresses the decomposition of dimethoxyethane (DME) on the Li metal by strengthening the interactions of DME and FSI− around Li+. Second, FB efficiently elevates the content of LiF in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) based on its electrochemical reduction reaction. The unique solvation and interfacial chemistry of FB‐DHCE enable dendrite‐free deposition of lithium with high Coulombic efficiency (up to 99.3%) and prolong cycling life (over 500 cycles at 1 mA cm−2). The performance of FB‐DHCE is further demonstrated in full cells under practical conditions, including ambient to low temperature (–20 °C), high areal capacity (7.6 mAh cm−2), high current density (3 mA cm−2), limited excess Li (20 µm Li), and lean electrolyte (3 g Ah−1). Employing FB as a cosolvent not only opens a novel pathway to stabilize Li metal anodes, but also could greatly advance the development of Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (RLMBs) have been regarded as promising successors for contemporary lithium-ion batteries, in view of their high gravimetric and volumetric energy densities. Conventional non-aqueous liquid electrolytes containing organic carbonate solvents possess high chemical reactivities with metallic lithium anode and high flammability, which induces considerable safety threats under extreme conditions (e.g., overcharging and thermal runaway). Herein, we propose the utilization of fluorinated sulfonamide (i.e., N,N-dimethyl fluorosulfonamide (DMFSA)) as solvent, together with lithium (fluorosulfonyl)( n -nonafluorobutanesulfonyl)imide (LiFNFSI) as co-salt and/or electrolyte additive for accessing safer and high-performing RLMBs. Comprehensive physical (e.g., thermal transition, viscosity, and ionic conductivity) and electrochemical (e.g., anodic stability on different electrodes) characterizations have been performed, aiming to reveal the inherent characteristics of the sulfonamide-based electrolytes and the particular role of LiFNFSI on the stabilization of LiCoO 2 cathode. It has been demonstrated that the sulfonamide-based electrolytes exhibit superior flame-retardant abilities and decent ionic conductivities (> 1 mS·cm −1 at room temperature). The incorporation of LiFNFSI as co-salt and/or electrolyte additive could significantly suppress the side reactions occurring at the cathode compartment, through the preferential decompositions of the FNFSI − anion. This work is anticipated to give an in-depth understanding on the working mechanism of LiFNFSI in the sulfonamide-based electrolytes, and also spurs the development of high-energy and safer RLMBs.

Abstract:Abstract The development of new solvents is imperative in lithium metal batteries due to the incompatibility of conventional carbonate and narrow electrochemical windows of ether-based electrolytes. Whereas the fluorinated ethers showed improved electrochemical stabilities, they can hardly solvate lithium ions. Thus, the challenge in electrolyte chemistry is to combine the high voltage stability of fluorinated ethers with high lithium ion solvation ability of ethers in a single molecule. Herein, we report a new solvent, 2,2-dimethoxy-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (DTDL), combining a cyclic fluorinated ether with a linear ether segment to simultaneously achieve high voltage stability and tune lithium ion solvation ability and structure. High oxidation stability up to 5.5 V, large lithium ion transference number of 0.75 and stable Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% after 500 cycles proved the potential of DTDL in high-voltage lithium metal batteries. Furthermore, 20 μm thick lithium paired LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cell incorporating 2 M LiFSI-DTDL electrolyte retained 84% of the original capacity after 200 cycles at 0.5 C.

Abstract:Fluorinated electrolytes are promising for stabilizing the interfacial chemistry in high-voltage LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) batteries. However, the design of previous fluorinated electrolytes overlooked the essential role of the cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) on de-solvation, relying heavily on weak solvation. Theoretically, the cosolvent occupied solvation structure characteristic of the highly antioxidative cosolvent and the easily oxidized salt additive in the first solvation shell is highly desirable to both widen the electrochemical window and promote the anion-enriched CEI to facilitate de-solvation. The key challenges lie in identifying ideal cosolvents that are highly polar, antioxidative, and have a stronger interaction with anions, to replace the solvation site of the main solvents without oxidation of itself and promote the oxidation of additive anions. Herein sulfone (SL) and DFOB- are screened out following developed rules, and the interaction relationships are: (i) Li+-cosolvent > Li+-main solvent; (ii) DFOB--cosolvent > DFOB--main solvent; (iii) DFOB--cosolvent > DFOB--Li+. And an optimized fluorinated electrolyte composed of 10% SL and 0.02 M LiDFOB is therefore successfully developed. This occupied solvation design promotes both interfacial/anodic stability and de-solvation under an aggressive 4.7 V. Consequently, similar to 400 W h kg(-1) NCM811/Li cells at 4.7 V demonstrate an 82% capacity retention after 200 cycles. Commercial NCM811/Gr pouch cells at 4.5 V achieve 92% capacity retention over 500 cycles, concurrently with unexpectedly high safety performance in terms of thermal, mechanical, and electrical abuse. This work underscores the critical impact of solvation site-occupied cosolvent on the CEI modification and kinetics optimization, opening a new avenue for high voltage electrolyte design.
FSI-inspired solvent and “full fluorosulfonyl” electrolyte for 4 V class lithium-metal batteries

Abstract:High-voltage rechargeable lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) require electrolytes that are compatible with both the Li metal anode (LMA) and the metal-oxide cathode. Herein, by imitating the fluorosulfonyl imide group from a well-known LMA-compatible salt, lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI), we come up with an organic solvent dimethylsulfamoyl fluoride (FSO2NC2H6), a fluorosulfonamide (FSA) with two methyl substituents, to develop a new "full fluorosulfonyl" (FFS) electrolyte. Remarkably, it enables a highly reversible LMA with an excellent initial coulombic efficiency (CE) similar to 91%, and rapidly approaching 99% within only 10 cycles, with average CE outperforming the well-known LMA-compatible fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC)-based electrolyte. Furthermore, benefitting from its high anodic stability against the oxidative LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC622) and LiMn2O4 (LMO) surfaces, the Li||NMC622 cell retains 89% of its original capacity after 200 cycles using a limited Li excess anode. This electrolyte design strategy opens a new avenue for exploring new medium-concentration organic electrolytes for 4 V class lithium-metal batteries (LMBs).
Asymmetrically‐Fluorinated Electrolyte Molecule Design for Simultaneous Achieving Good Solvation and High Inertness to Enable Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:It proposes a novel asymmetrically‐fluorinated electrolyte molecule design that combines the high stability merits of symmetrically‐fluorinated and strong‐solvation advantages of none‐fluorinated electrolytes while addressing their limitations at the same time. The asymmetrically‐fluorinated electrolyte exhibits significantly improved performances of 98.97% Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency, 240 stable cycles in high‐voltage Li||NCM811 full‐cell under ultralow anode amount, uniform Li deposition morphology and fire‐retardancy. Electrolyte molecule engineering, especially symmetrically fluorinated molecules, is recognized as an efficacious approach for solving the insufficient stability of conventional none‐fluorinated electrolyte molecules to stabilize the energy‐dense Li metal batteries (LMB). However, the weak solvation and low ionic conductivity of symmetrically fluorinated electrolyte molecules, and the formation of low‐ionic‐conductivity unstable interphase derived from the electrolyte, are the main challenges that limit the applications of symmetrically fluorinated electrolyte for improving LMB performance. Here, an asymmetrically‐fluorinated electrolyte molecule design principle is proposed by combining a high‐inertness fluorinated structure on one side of the molecule with a solvation‐promoting none‐fluorinated structure on the other side, successfully integrating the high stability of fluorinated electrolyte and strong solvation/ion‐conduction advantages of none‐fluorinated electrolyte while remedying their limitations at the same time. The LMB using asymmetrically‐fluorinated electrolyte exhibits significantly improved performances of 98.97% Li plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency, decent cathode protection, 240 stable cycles in Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full‐cell under ultralow anode amount, uniform Li deposition morphology and excellent fire‐retardancy that overwhelm the similar electrolyte with none‐fluorinated or symmetrically‐fluorinated molecule structure. The asymmetrically‐fluorinated electrolyte molecule design provides a new molecule‐level understanding of fluorination degree/position‐related structure‐property relationship in electrolytes and solves the fluorination‐related dilemma for achieving practical high‐performance LMB.

And an optimized fluorinated electrolyte composed of 10% SL and 0.02 M LiDFOB is therefore successfully developed. This occupied solvation design promotes both interfacial/anodic stability and de-solvation under an aggressive 4.7 V. Consequently, similar to 400 W h kg(-1) NCM811/Li cells at 4.7 V demonstrate an 82% capacity retention after 200 cycles. Commercial NCM811/Gr pouch cells at 4.5 V achieve 92% capacity retention over 500 cycles, concurrently with unexpectedly high safety performance in terms of thermal, mechanical, and electrical abuse. This work underscores the critical impact of solvation site-occupied cosolvent on the CEI modification and kinetics optimization, opening a new avenue for high voltage electrolyte design.
Electrolyte engineering via ether solvent fluorination for developing stable non-aqueous lithium metal batteries

Abstract:Abstract Fluorination of ether solvents is an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical stability of non-aqueous electrolyte solutions in lithium metal batteries. However, excessive fluorination detrimentally impacts the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, thus limiting the battery performance. Here, to maximize the electrolyte ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability, we introduce the targeted trifluoromethylation of 1,2-dimethoxyethane to produce 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,3-dimethoxypropane (TFDMP). TFDMP is used as a solvent to prepare a 2 M non-aqueous electrolyte solution comprising bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide salt. This electrolyte solution shows an ionic conductivity of 7.4 mS cm –1 at 25 °C, an oxidation stability up to 4.8 V and an efficient suppression of Al corrosion. When tested in a coin cell configuration at 25 °C using a 20 μm Li metal negative electrode, a high mass loading LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 -based positive electrode (20 mg cm –2 ) with a negative/positive (N/P) capacity ratio of 1, discharge capacity retentions (calculated excluding the initial formation cycles) of 81% after 200 cycles at 0.1 A g –1 and 88% after 142 cycles at 0.2 A g –1 are achieved.

Solvation Structure and Derived Interphase Tuning for High‐Voltage Ni‐Rich Lithium Metal Batteries with High Safety Using Difluorinated Ionic Liquid Based Dual‐Salt Electrolytes

Abstract:Stabilizing electrolytes for high-voltage lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is crucial yet challenging, as they need to ensure stability against both Li anodes and high-voltage cathodes (above 4.5V versus Li/Li+), addressing issues like poor cycling and thermal runaway. Herein, a novel gem-difluorinated skeleton of ionic liquid (IL) is designed and synthesized, and its non-flammable electrolytes successfully overcome aforementioned challenges. By creatively using dual salts, fluorinated ionic liquid and dimethyl carbonate as a co-solvent, the solvation structure of Li+ ions is efficiently controlled through electrostatic and weak interactions that are well unveiled and illuminated via nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The as-prepared electrolytes exhibit high security avoiding thermal runaway and show excellent compatibility with high-voltage cathodes. Besides, the solvation structure derives a robust and stable F-rich interphase, resulting in high reversibility and Li-dendrite prevention. LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/Li LMBs (4.5 V) demonstrate excellent long-term stability with a high average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of at least 99.99% and a good capacity retention of 90.4% over 300 cycles, even can work at a higher voltage of 4.7 V. Furthermore, the ultrahigh Ni-rich LiNi0.88Co0.09Mn0.03O2/Li system also delivers excellent electrochemical performance, highlighting the significance of fluorinated IL-based electrolyte design and enhanced interphasial chemistry in improving battery performance.

Abstract:A "dual-fluorinated" electrolyte consisting of fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC), 1H,1H,5H-Perfluoropentyl-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethylether (F-EAE) was investigated for 5V-class LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4(LNMO)-based batteries. It is found that the synergistic effect of two fluorinated solvents brings about high oxidation durability of exceeding 5 V (vs Li+/Li), and then excellent cycle performance with the capacity retention of similar to 92% after 200 cycles at the cutoff voltage of 5 V, far beyond conventional carbonate-based electrolyte and another "mono-fluorinated" electrolyte merely with F-EAE. The SEM, TEM and XPS test reveal that a uniform and F/P-contained surface film exists in the cycled LNMO cathode in the "dual-fluorinated" electrolyte, possibly derived from the interactivity of two fluorinated solvents under the high voltage environment. It is further stressed that that the suitable interface modification on the cathode is another important factor for the long-term and stable cycling at 5 V operation besides the oxidation-resistivity of the electrolyte self.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries with Ni-rich cathode and flammable carbonate electrolytes are breeding severe safety concerns which hinds their application in electric vehicles. Herein, by introducing the fluorobenzene (FB) with a low-density and low-cost as cosolvent and bridge solvents in triethyl phosphate (TEP)-based diluted high-concentration electrolytes (DHCEs) system, we design a non-flammable electrolyte with a special solvation structure containing internal-external flame retardant. This non-flammable electrolyte not only solves successfully the incompatibility problem of TEP-based electrolyte to the Li-metal anode (LMA) and the graphite (Gr) anode, but also ensures the stable cycling of Li||LiNi0.7Co0.1Mn0.2O2 (86% capacity retention after 120 cycles) and Gr|| LiNi0.7Co0.1Mn0.2O2 (75% capacity retention after 200 cycles) full cells. Such design opens up a new window for developing new electrolyte systems and building safer high-energy-density batteries.

Abstract:A quantitative solvation structure engineering approach is presented to design a novel nonflammable fluorinated electrolyte by tuning intermolecular interactions, enabling superior performance for high‐voltage lithium metal batteries (HV‐LMBs) in a wide temperature range of −40 °C to 60 °C. Moreover, a new synergistic interfacial model is presented to elucidate the interfacial chemistries between the electrolyte and electrodes at a molecular scale. High‐voltage lithium metal batteries are the most promising energy storage technology due to their excellent energy density (>400 Wh kg−1). However, the oxidation decomposition of conventional carbonate‐based electrolytes at the high‐potential cathode, the detrimental reaction between the lithium anode and electrolyte, particularly the uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth, always lead to a severe capacity decay and/or flammable safety issues, hindering their practical applications. Herein, a solvation structure engineering strategy based on tuning intermolecular interactions is proposed as a strategy to design a novel nonflammable fluorinated electrolyte. Using this approach, this work shows superior cycling stability in a wide temperature range (−40 °C to 60 °C) for a 4.4 V‐class LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811)‐based Li‐metal battery. By coupling the high‐loading of NCM811 cathode (3.0 mAh cm−2) and a controlled amount of lithium anode (twofold excess of Li deposition on Cu, Cu@Li) (N/P = 2), the Cu@Li || NCM811 full cell can cycle more than 162 cycles with high‐capacity retention of 80%. This work finds that the change of the coordination environment of Li+ with solvent and PF6− by tuning intermolecular interaction is an effective method to stabilize the electrolyte and electrode performance. These discoveries can provide a pathway for electrolyte design in metal ion batteries.

Abstract:To address the challenges associated with applying high-voltage cathodes in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) there is a need for new electrolytes enabling stable interphases at both electrodes. Here we attack this by using a dioxolane-derived cyclic fluorinated ether, 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3-dioxolane (BTFD), as a fluorinated diluent to a 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) based electrolyte. The cells using the resulting BTFD-based electrolytes exhibit higher Coulombic efficiencies for lithium stripping and plating as compared to those using the non-fluorinated ether-based electrolyte. This originates from the reduced formation of 'dead Li' at the anode, as shown by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). In practice, the BTFD-based electrolytes are shown to improve the performance of Li||NMC cells, which is due to the formation of a predominantly inorganic cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) that suppresses the cathode degradation during cycling. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to characterize the CEIs' overall composition and structure. To obtain more details on the CEI speciation, Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were employed, assisted by molecular level computations. Overall, we demonstrate how the very design of the electrolyte composition influences the performance of LMBs.

Abstract:Localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) has been adopted to derive resilient inorganic-rich solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer for lithium-metal anodes (LMA) and increase the ionic conductivity of high-concentration electrolyte (HCE). While the ideal diluent molecules used in LHCE should be miscible in electrolyte system, it should not solvate lithium-ion effectively. To date, systematic investigation to reveal the design rule of diluent molecules remain poorly investigated. In addition, the choice of diluents is largely limited to fluorinated organic molecules which are expensive and environmentally hazardous and unstable at the reductive potential. Because of poor cathodic stability, fluorinated diluents (FDs) have failed to achieve cycle lives longer than 500 cycles in lithium metal half-cell. Herein, we establish the design rule of diluents for the ideal LHCE, which allows to derive three non-fluorinated diluents (NFDs) systematically. We present that two solvatochromic parameters, HBA basicity (β) and normalized electronic transition energy (E T N ), unravel the generalization rule for the lithium-ion solvation capability and miscibility of diluents. Our design rule discovers three NFDs: anisole, ethoxybenzene, and furan. These NFDs have the unique resonance structures which effectively delocalize the oxygen lone pair electrons and thus enhance non-solvating characteristics, confirmed by the β value and the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In addition, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy studies confirm that our NFDs remains stable and unreacted after long-term cycling. Finally, NFD-containing electrolytes achieve superior cyclability up to 1400 cycles, the record for LHCE to date. The results obtained in this study may pave the way for designing advanced electrolyte for next generation LMA.
Dual‐Solvent Li‐Ion Solvation Enables High‐Performance Li‐Metal Batteries

Abstract:Novel electrolyte designs to further enhance the lithium (Li) metal battery cyclability are highly desirable. Here, fluorinated 1,6‐dimethoxyhexane (FDMH) is designed and synthesized as the solvent molecule to promote electrolyte stability with its prolonged –CF2– backbone. Meanwhile, 1,2‐dimethoxyethane is used as a co‐solvent to enable higher ionic conductivity and much reduced interfacial resistance. Combining the dual‐solvent system with 1 m lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), high Li‐metal Coulombic efficiency (99.5%) and oxidative stability (6 V) are achieved. Using this electrolyte, 20 µm Li||NMC batteries are able to retain ≈80% capacity after 250 cycles and Cu||NMC anode‐free pouch cells last 120 cycles with 75% capacity retention under ≈2.1 µL mAh−1 lean electrolyte conditions. Such high performances are attributed to the anion‐derived solid‐electrolyte interphase, originating from the coordination of Li‐ions to the highly stable FDMH and multiple anions in their solvation environments. This work demonstrates a new electrolyte design strategy that enables high‐performance Li‐metal batteries with multisolvent Li‐ion solvation with rationally optimized molecular structure and ratio.
