Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of simulation-based training on surgical skills during 2-h learning labs during surgical annual meeting. During the 36th European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery annual meeting a learning drylab for simulation-based training for endoscopic mitral valve repair was set up. For this purpose, a validated high-fidelity endoscopic mitral valve surgery simulator and a validated suturing map were used. The training lasted 2 h. Technical pre- and post-assessment were carried out based on time and accuracy to place a suture at the posterior mitral valve annulus. The suture had to be placed within 60 s. The suture was considered anatomically correct if it entered and exited the annulus at the designated place (on the posterior annulus) and accurate if placed within the right width (8–12 mm). In total, 46 participants were included in this study, of whom 18 (38%) were experienced/staff surgeons, 23 (51%) fellows and 5 (11%) residents. Before the training, 48% of the participants failed to place any suture for pre-assessment. After completing the training, 100% of the participants succeeded in placing an anatomically correct suture. There was a significant improvement in the time taken [pre-assessment mean 45 (standard deviation: 25) s vs post-assessment mean 18 (standard deviation: 12) s, P < 0.001] and the accuracy to place a suture in the mitral valve annulus after completing the training (pre-assessment 32.6% vs post-assessment 65.2%, P < 0.001). This study shows a significant improvement in endoscopic skills for mitral valve surgery after completing a 2-h training with a high-fidelity endoscopic mitral valve surgery simulator. This suggests that simulation trainings during scientific annual meetings are effective on surgical skills.

Abstract:Background : Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an emerging tool in the creation of anatomical models for surgical training. Its use in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) has been limited because of the difficulty in replicating the anatomical details. Aim : To describe the development of a patient-specific 3D printed multi-material simulator for use in ESS, and to validate it as a training tool among a group of residents and experts in ear-nose-throat (ENT) surgery. Methods : Advanced material jetting 3D printing technology was used to produce both soft tissues and bony structures of the simulator to increase anatomical realism and tactile feedback of the model. A total of 3 ENT residents and 9 ENT specialists were recruited to perform both non-destructive tasks and ESS steps on the model. The anatomical fidelity and the usefulness of the simulator in ESS training were evaluated through specific questionnaires. Results : The tasks were accomplished by 100% of participants and the survey showed overall high scores both for anatomy fidelity and usefulness in training. Dacryocystorhinostomy, medial antrostomy, and turbinectomy were rated as accurately replicable on the simulator by 75% of participants. Positive scores were obtained also for ethmoidectomy and DRAF procedures, while the replication of sphenoidotomy received neutral ratings by half of the participants. Conclusion : This study demonstrates that a 3D printed multi-material model of the sino-nasal anatomy can be generated with a high level of anatomical accuracy and haptic response. This technology has the potential to be useful in surgical training as an alternative or complementary tool to cadaveric dissection.

Abstract:Background: High fidelity three-dimensional Mitral valve models (3D MVM) printed from echocardiography are currently being used in preparation for surgical repair. Aim: We hypothesize that printed 3DMVM could have relevance to cardiologists in training by improving their understanding of normal anatomy and pathology. Methods: Sixteen fellow physicians in pediatric and adult cardiology training were recruited. 3D echocardiography (3DE) video clips of six mitral valves (one normal and five pathological) were displayed and the fellows were asked to name the prolapsing segments in each. Following that, three still images of 3D MVMs in different projections: enface, profile and tilted corresponding to the same MVs seen in the clip were presented on a screen. Participating physicians were presented with a comprehensive questionnaire aimed at assessing whether the 3D MVM has improved their understanding of valvular anatomy. Finally, a printed 3D MVM of each of the valves was handed out, and the same questionnaire was re-administered to identify any further improvement in the participants' perception of the anatomy. Results: The correct diagnosis using the echocardiography video clip of the Mitral valve was attained by 45% of the study participants. Both pediatric and adult trainees, regardless of the year of training demonstrated improved understanding of the anatomy of MV after observing the corresponding model image. Significant improvement in their understanding was noted after participants had seen and physically examined the printed model. Conclusion: Printed 3D MVM has a beneficial impact on the cardiology trainees' understanding of MV anatomy and pathology compared to 3DE images.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to develop a realistic 3D printing-based simulator for the training and planning of the left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) to be used in the cath lab. Design/methodology/approach Starting from a pre-operative computed tomography dataset of a patient already treated with LAAO, the model was obtained, consisting in the right and left heart, opportunely assembled to replicate the position and orientation of the patient's anatomy while lying on the cath lab table. Different 3D printing techniques and materials were used to mimic the interaction between the cardiac tissue and the clinical instrumentation. The simulator was tested in the cath lab under proper image guidance by three LAAO expert operators. The clinicians were required to assign a score in terms of realism to each material used to fabricate the fossa ovalis and the LAA. Findings The simulated interventions were successfully performed by the operators, who were able to navigate in the system and release the occluder device as during a real procedure. The intraoperative images acquired during the simulations were highly comparable with data from a real intervention, with a mean percentage difference below 10%. Originality/value This study demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed simulator to faithfully replicate the LAAO procedure and its potentiality to be used for multiple purposes, including the training of the young clinicians, the evaluation of the most complicated cases and the design of novel occluder devices, in a fully realistic setting.

"Just-In-Time" Simulation Training Using 3-D Printed Cardiac Models After Congenital Cardiac Surgery

Abstract:Background: High-fidelity simulation using patient-specific three-dimensional (3D) models may be effective in facilitating pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU) provider training for clinical management of congenital cardiac surgery patients. Methods: The 3D-printed heart models were rendered from preoperative cross-sectional cardiac imaging for 10 patients undergoing congenital cardiac surgery. Immediately following surgical repair, a congenital cardiac surgeon and an intensive care physician conducted a simulation training session regarding postoperative care utilizing the patient-specific 3D model for the PCICU team. After the simulation, Likert-type 0 to 10 scale questionnaire assessed participant perception of impact of the training session. Results: Seventy clinicians participated in training sessions, including 22 physicians, 38 nurses, and 10 ancillary care providers. Average response to whether 3D models were more helpful than standard hand off was 8.4 of 10. Questions regarding enhancement of understanding and clinical ability received average responses of 9.0 or greater, and 90% of participants scored 8 of 10 or higher. Nurses scored significantly higher than other clinicians on self-reported familiarity with the surgery (7.1 vs. 5.8; P = .04), clinical management ability (8.6 vs. 7.7; P = .02), and ability enhancement (9.5 vs. 8.7; P = .02). Compared to physicians, nurses and ancillary providers were more likely to consider 3D models more helpful than standard hand off (8.7 vs. 7.7; P = .05). Higher case complexity predicted greater enhancement of understanding of surgery (P = .04). Conclusion: The 3D heart models can be used to enhance congenital cardiac critical care via simulation training of multidisciplinary intensive care teams. Benefit may be dependent on provider type and case complexity.

Abstract:Given the multitude of challenges surgeons face during mitral valve repair surgery, they should have a high confidence in handling of instruments and in the application of surgical techniques before they enter the operating room. Unfortunately, opportunities for surgical training of minimally-invasive repair are very limited, leading to a situation where most surgeons undergo a steep learning curve while operating the first patients. In order to provide a realistic tool for surgical training, a commercial simulator was augmented by flexible patient-specific mitral valve replica. In an elaborated production pipeline, finalized after many optimization cycles, models were segmented from 3D ultrasound and then 3D-printable molds were computed automatically and printed in rigid material, the lower part being water-soluble. After silicone injection, the silicone model was dissolved from the mold and anchored in the simulator. To our knowledge, our models are the first to comprise the full mitral valve apparatus, i.e. the annulus, leaflets, chordae tendineae and papillary muscles. Nine different valve molds were automatically created according to the proposed workflow (seven prolapsed valves and two valves with functional mitral insufficiency). From these mold geometries, 16 replica were manufactured. A material test revealed that Ecoflex\textsuperscript{TM} 00-30 is the most suitable material for leaflet-mimicking tissue out of seven mixtures. Production time was around 36h per valve. Twelve surgeons performed various surgical techniques, e.g. annuloplasty, neo-chordae implantation, triangular leaflet resection and assessed the realism of the valves very positively. Validation of a dynamic 4D microsurgical bypass simulator for training and teaching microvascular anastomosis techniques with blood flow and fluorescence imaging

Abstract:Objective: Microvascular anastomosis is challenging, and training surgeons to develop and maintain skills is imperative. Current training models either miss the simulation of the surgical workflow, lack 3D key-hole space, need ethical approval, require special preparation, or lack realism. To circumvent these issues, this study describes the use of a mixed reality 3D printed model with integrated blood flow for training cerebral anastomosis and assesses its validity. Methods: Different-sized 3D-printed artificial micro artery models in a 3D brain space with a keyhole opening were used. The model was connected to a 4D simulator to induce pulsatile blood flow. Neurosurgical microscopes and exoscopes were used for visualization. Nine participants (n = 6 board-certified cerebrovascular neurosurgeons; n = 3 in-training) participated in the study and practiced anastomosis techniques with the simulator. Two senior, experienced vascular neurosurgeons mentored live teaching activity on the simulator. Participants completed a survey to score the face and content validity of the simulation on a 5-point Likert scale. Simulation time and anastomosis score differences between in-training and board-certified participants were compared for construct validity. Results: Participants scored the simulation difficulty similar to actual surgery, proving face validity. All participants agreed that practice on the provided simulator models would improve bypass techniques (μ = 4.67/5 ± 0.47) and instrument handling (μ = 4.56/5 ± 0.68). Board-certified participants had better anastomosis scores than in-training participants (non-significant difference). Conclusions: The 4D simulator and the high-fidelity artificial 3D printed model effectively simulated actual bypass surgery in a key-hole fashion with blood flow abilities. Limited resources and preparation time are needed for the training setup. The model provides benefits in learning and maintaining anastomosis skills and allows for easy adaptation to different microanatomical scenarios.

Abstract:Journal of Intensive Care Medicine, Ahead of Print. Background: Individual implementation rate of bronchoscopy-guided percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) varies among intensivists. Simulation training (ST) can increase the safety of medical procedures by reducing stress levels of the performing team. The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit of ST in PDT regarding procedural time, quality of performance, and percepted feelings of safety of the proceduralist and to compare conventional simulators (CSIM) with simulators generated from 3D printers (3DSIM). Methods: We conducted a prospective, single-center, randomized, blinded cross-over study comparing the benefit of CSIM versus 3DSIM for ST of PDT. Participants underwent a standardized theoretical training and were randomized to ST with CSIM (group A) or 3DSIM (group B). After ST, participants' performance was assessed by two blinded examiners on a porcine trachea regarding time required for successful completion of PDT and correct performance (assessed by a performance score). Percepted feelings of safety were assessed before and after ST. This was followed by a second training and second assessment of the same aspects with crossed groups. Results: 44 participants were included: 24 initially trained with CSIM (group A) and 20 with 3DSIM (group B). Correctness of the PDT performance increased significantly in group B (p < .01) and not significantly in group A (p = .14). Mean procedural time required for performing a PDT after their second ST compared to the first assessment (p < .01) was lower with no difference between group A and group B and irrespective of the participants' previous experience regarding PDT, age, and sex. Moreover, percepted feelings of safety increased after the first ST in both groups (p < .001). Conclusions: ST can improve procedural skills, procedural time, and percepted feelings of safety of the proceduralist in simulated PDT.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Three-dimensional (3D) model simulation provides the opportunity to manipulate real devices and learn intervention skills in a realistic, controlled, and safe environment. To ensure that simulators provide a realistic surrogate to real procedures they must undergo scientific validation. We aimed to evaluate the 3D-printed simulator SimulHeart® for face and content validity to demonstrate its value as a training tool in interventional cardiology (IC).METHODS: Health professionals were recruited from sixteen Portuguese IC units. All participants received a 30-minute theoretical introduction, 10-minute demonstration of each task and then performed the intervention on a 3D-printed simulator (SimulHeart®). Finally, a post-training questionnaire focusing on the appearance of the simulation, simulation content, and satisfaction/self-efficacy was administered.RESULTS: We included 56 participants: 16 "experts" (general and interventional cardiologists), 26 "novices" (cardiology residents), and 14 nurses and allied professionals. On a five-point Likert scale, the overall mean score of face validity was 4.38±0.35 and the overall mean score of content validity was 4.69±0.32. There was no statistically significant difference in the scores provided by "experts" and "novices". Participants reported a high level of satisfaction/self-efficacy with 60.7% considering it strongly improved their skills. The majority (82.1%) "agreed" or "strongly agreed" that after the simulation they felt confident to perform the procedure on a patient.CONCLUSION: The 3D-printed simulator (SimulHeart®) showed excellent face and content validity. 3D simulation may play an important role in future IC training programs. Further research is required to correlate simulator performance with clinical performance in real patients.

Abstract:Reconstructive mitral valve surgeries are demanding cardiac surgeries that are conducted in the mid-age of a surgical career at the earliest. Receiving years of training in patients is required to gain the experiences and skills necessary for surgical success. On top of that, the number of such surgeries is limited per hospital, therefore other means of training should be offered to facilitate a steep learning curve. Within the scope of this work, we equipped an existing physical simulator with patient-specific flexible replica of the mitral valve. We developed software to automatically produce a 3D-printable casting mold for silicone material, as this mimics properties of the valve tissue in terms of stitching and cutting. We show the feasibility of the approach and the usefulness of these models is evaluated by an experienced cardiac surgeon, successfully conducting reconstructive surgery on pathological silicone valves.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Mitral valve repair (MVR) has been considered superior to mitral replacement for degenerative MV disease and even rheumatic diseases. However, the repair rate varies widely depending on the medical center and the surgeons' experience. The aim of our study was to apply three-dimensional printing (3DP) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in surgical simulation to provide reference for surgical decision-making, especially for inexperienced surgeons.METHODS: Our study included retrospective and prospective cohorts. We first enrolled the retrospective cohort of 35 patients who were prepared to have MVR, aiming at exploring the feasibility of surgical simulation using 3DP and CFD. Three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (3D-TEE) and computed tomography angiography (CTA) were performed for all patients, and imaging data were fused to construct a 3D digital model. Next, the model was used to make the 3DP dynamic model and for CFD analysis. Mitral repair was simulated in both the 3DP dynamic model and CFD to predict surgical outcomes (grade of regurgitation and vena contracta width) and possible complications (systolic anterior motion, left ventricular outflow tract obstruction). Second, a prospective cohort of 20 patients was studied with 10 patients placed in a 3DP-guided group and 10 in an image-guided group. Rate of transformation to mitral replacement, surgery time, surgical outcomes, and surgical complications were compared between groups.RESULTS: Of the 35 patients retrospectively enrolled, 14 underwent MVR and 21 were transferred to mitral replacement. Surgical simulation for the 14 MVR patients showed high consistency with <i>in vivo</i> results. The result of surgical simulation for the 21 patients transferred to mitral replacement showed that 7 might have benefited from MVR. In the prospective cohort, the rate of transformation to mitral replacement and surgery time in the 3DP-guided group were significantly lower than those in the image-guided group.CONCLUSIONS: 3DP and CFD models based on image data can be used for <i>in vitro</i> surgical simulation. These emerging technologies are now changing traditional models of diagnosis and treatment, and the role of imaging data will no longer be limited to diagnosis but will contribute more to assisting surgeons in choosing treatment strategies.

Abstract:Abstract Background The acquisition of skills in penile prosthesis surgery has many limitations mainly due to the absence of simulators and models for training. Three-dimensional (3D) printed models can be utilized for surgical simulations, as they provide an opportunity to practice before entering the operating room and provide better understanding of the surgical approach. Aim This study aimed to evaluate and validate a 3D model of human male genitalia for penile prosthesis surgery. Methods This study included 3 evaluation and validation stages. The first stage involved verification of the 3D prototype model for anatomic landmarks compared with a cadaveric pelvis. The second stage involved validation of the improved model for anatomic accuracy and teaching purposes with the Rochester evaluation score. The third stage comprised validation of the suitability of the 3D prototype model as a surgical simulator and for skill acquisition. The third stage was performed at 3 centers using a modified version of a pre-existing, validated questionnaire and correlated with the Rochester evaluation score. Outcome We sought to determine the suitability of 3D model for training in penile prosthesis surgery in comparison with the available cadaveric model. Results The evaluation revealed a high Pearson correlation coefficient (0.86) between questions of the Rochester evaluation score and modified validated questionnaire. The 3D model scored 4.33 ± 0.57 (on a Likert scale from 1 to 5) regarding replication of the relevant human anatomy for the penile prosthesis surgery procedure. The 3D model scored 4.33 ± 0.57 (on a Likert scale from 1 to 5) regarding its ability to improve technical skills, teach and practice the procedure, and assess a surgeon’s ability. Furthermore, the experts stated that compared with the cadaver, the 3D model presented greater ethical suitability, reduced costs, and easier accessibility. Clinical implications A validated 3D model is a suitable alternative for penile prosthesis surgery training. Strengths and limitations This is the first validated 3D hydrogel model for penile prosthesis surgery teaching and training that experts consider suitable for skill acquisition. Because specific validated guidelines and questionnaires for the validation and verifications of 3D simulators for penile surgery are not available, a modified questionnaire was used. Conclusion The current 3D model for penile prosthesis surgery shows promising results regarding anatomic properties and suitability to train surgeons to perform penile implant surgery. The possibility of having an ethical, easy-to-use model with lower costs and limited consequences for the environment is encouraging for further development of the models.

Abstract:Background: Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to mitral valve surgery for patients at high or prohibitive operative risk. Prospective studies reported favourable outcomes in patients with annulus calcification (valve-in-mitral annulus calcification; ViMAC), failed annuloplasty ring (mitral valve-in-ring; MViR), and bioprosthetic mitral valve dysfunction (mitral valve-in-valve; MViV). Multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT)-derived 3D-modelling and simulations may provide complementary anatomical perspectives for TMVR planning. Aims: We aimed to illustrate the implementation of MSCT-derived modelling and simulations in the workup of TMVR for ViMAC, MViR, and MViV. Methods: For this retrospective study, we included all consecutive patients screened for TMVR and compared MSCT data, echocardiographic outcomes and clinical outcomes. Results: Sixteen out of 41 patients were treated with TMVR (ViMAC n = 9, MViR n = 3, MViV n = 4). Eleven patients were excluded for inappropriate sizing, 4 for anchoring issues and 10 for an unacceptable risk of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) based on 3D modelling. There were 3 procedure-related deaths and 1 non-procedure-related cardiovascular death during 30 days of follow-up. LVOTO occurred in 3 ViMAC patients and 1 MViR patient, due to deeper valve implantation than planned in 3 patients, and anterior mitral leaflet displacement with recurrent basal septum thickening in 1 patient. TMVR significantly reduced mitral mean gradients as compared with baseline measurements (median mean gradient 9.5 (9.0-11.5) mm Hg before TMVR versus 5.0 (4.5-6.0) mm Hg after TMVR, p = 0.03). There was no residual mitral regurgitation at 30 days. Conclusion: MSCT-derived 3D modelling and simulation provide valuable anatomical insights for TMVR with transcatheter balloon expandable valves in ViMAC, MViR and MViV. Further planning iterations should target the persistent risk for neo-LVOTO.
Custom Patient-Specific Three-Dimensional Printed Mitral Valve Models for Pre-Operative Patient Education Enhance Patient Satisfaction and Understanding

Abstract:In recent years, advances in medical imaging and three-dimensional (3D) additive manufacturing techniques have increased the use of 3D-printed anatomical models for surgical planning, device design and testing, customization of prostheses, and medical education. Using 3D-printing technology, we generated patient-specific models of mitral valves from their pre-operative cardiac imaging data and utilized these custom models to educate patients about their anatomy, disease, and treatment. Clinical 3D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography images were acquired from patients referred for mitral valve repair surgery and segmented using 3D modeling software. Patient-specific mitral valves were 3D-printed using a flexible polymer material to mimic the precise geometry and tissue texture of the relevant anatomy. 3D models were presented to patients at their pre-operative clinic visit and patient education was performed using either the 3D model or the standard anatomic illustrations. Afterward, patients completed questionnaires assessing knowledge and satisfaction. Responses were calculated based on a 1–5 Likert scale and analyzed using a nonparametric Mann–Whitney test. Twelve patients were presented with a patient-specific 3D-printed mitral valve model in addition to standard education materials and twelve patients were presented with only standard educational materials. The mean survey scores were 64.2 (±1.7) and 60.1 (±5.9), respectively (p = 0.008). The use of patient-specific anatomical models positively impacts patient education and satisfaction, and is a feasible method to open new opportunities in precision medicine.

Abstract:Background: Transcatheter treatments for structural heart disease, including edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (mTEER), heavily rely on transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) for pre-procedural assessment and guidance. Trans-septal puncture (TSP) is one of the first key steps of such procedures, with two-dimensional (2D) TOE often providing suboptimal imaging. Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography could overcome the limitations of 2D TOE and improve the assessment of tenting height. Methods: This single-centre, retrospective study included 64 patients who underwent mTEER between October 2023 and April 2024. Tenting height during TSP was assessed by 2D TOE in mid-oesophageal (ME) four-chamber view and by 3D TOE after the acquisition of a 3D volume, including the interatrial septum, aortic valve, and mitral valve, and subsequent multiplanar reconstruction (MPR). A total of 100 TSP attempts with 2D and 3D TOE were evaluated. Results: Procedural success was obtained in 92.2% of cases. There was a statistically significant difference between 2D and 3D measurements (2D: 4.36 ± 0.61 cm, MPR: 4.59 ± 0.63 mm2, p < 0.001), despite good correlation (r = 0.880, p < 0.001). The difference between 2D and 3D tenting height measurements differed significantly between patients with optimal and suboptimal 2D image windows (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in septal puncture success between optimal 2D and 3D data (p = 0.942). Conclusions: Adopting 3D TOE with multiplanar reconstruction for assessing tenting height in mTEER procedures offers significant advantages over traditional 2D TOE. Enhanced visualization, accuracy, and potential for standardization improve procedural outcomes and patient safety, making 3D TOE integration into routine practice highly beneficial and recommended.

Abstract:Training cardiothoracic surgeons in open aortic surgery is challenging due to the complexity of technical skills and limited operator experience. The study reports on a reproducible, intermediate‐fidelity simulator for aortic surgery. Background Training cardiothoracic surgeons in open aortic surgery is challenging due to limited operator experience, low patient volume and technically demanding skills to be performed within a deep thoracic cavity. Surgical simulation has become a cornerstone of cardiothoracic surgical training and has been shown to improve skill acquisition and performance in the operating theatre. Due to the complexity of aortic surgery, there is a paucity of simulators that are concomitantly accessible and of sufficient fidelity. The purpose of this study was to develop a reproducible, intermediate‐fidelity simulator for aortic surgery. Method This novel simulator was constructed from plastic storage containers to simulate the depth of a thoracic cavity. Head vessels and distal arch were reconstructed within the stimulator with synthetic Dacron polyester grafts to maximize model fidelity. A porcine or bovine heart was used for the simulation of aortic root replacement and anastomosis to the distal arch graft. Results The simulator was reproduced in a wet‐lab skills session at an annual Australian cardiothoracic trainee meeting. Qualitative feedback was obtained from the current cardiothoracic trainees. It is a feasible model for the practice of aortic surgery. Conclusion As the surgical education paradigm shifts towards simulation, this easily reproducible, intermediate‐fidelity model provides an effective avenue to equip the trainee for the operating room and is a method of surgical training that can be considered by colleges.

Abstract:Background The simulated three-dimensional (3D) printed anatomical model of the aorta, which has become the norm in medical education, has poor authenticity, tactility, feasibility, and interactivity. Therefore, this study explored the educational value and effect of mixed reality (MR) combined with a 3D printed model of aortic disease in training surgical residents. Method Fifty-one resident physicians who rotated in vascular surgery were selected and divided into traditional (27) and experimental (24) teaching groups using the random number table method. After undergoing the experimental and traditional training routines on aortic disease, both the groups took a theoretical test on aortic disease and an assessment of the simulation based on the Michigan Standard Simulation Experience Scale (MiSSES) template. Their scores and assessment results were compared. The study was conducted at the Department of Vascular Surgery of Peking University People’s Hospital, Beijing, China. Results In the theoretical test on aortic disease, the experimental teaching group obtained higher mean total scores (79.0 ± 9.1 vs. 72.6 ± 7.5, P = 0.013) and higher scores in anatomy/ pathophysiology (30.8 ± 5.4 vs. 24.8 ± 5.8; P < 0.001) than the traditional teaching group. The differences in their scores in the differential diagnosis (25.8 ± 3.0 vs. 23.3 ± 4.9; P = 0.078) and treatment (22.5 ± 11.8 vs. 24.5 ± 8.2; P = 0.603) sessions were insignificant. The MR-assisted teaching stratified the vascular residents through the MiSSES survey. Overall, 95.8% residents (23/24) strongly or somewhat agreed that the MR was adequately realistic and the curriculum helped improve the ability to understanding aortic diseases. Further, 91.7% residents (22/24) strongly or somewhat agreed that the MR-assisted teaching was a good training tool for knowledge on aortic diseases. All residents responded with “Good” or “Outstanding” on the overall rating of the MR experience. Conclusions MR combined with the 3D printed model helped residents understand and master aortic disease, particularly regarding anatomy and pathophysiology. Additionally, the realistic 3D printing and MR models improved the self-efficacy of residents in studying aortic diseases, thus greatly stimulating their enthusiasm and initiative to study.
