Abstract:Many deadly infectious diseases are transmitted through airborne routes in indoor environments. Far UV upper-room system combined with proper ventilation is regarded as an effective approach to disinfect airborne microorganisms. Despite the current advances in the far UV upper-room system, various types of data are still lacking to guide the efficient design and the safe operation. This study combines field air sampling, laboratory experiments and computational fluid dynamics simulations to advance the knowledge on the potential of far UV radiation for disinfection and its safety design. Our findings reveal that seven out of the eight measured room spaces are categorised as slightly polluted (1201–2000 CFU m −3 ) or polluted (>2000 CFU m −3 ). Proteobacteria and Firmicutes constitute 65.2 ± 10.6 % and 21.2 ± 5.68 % of the bacterial composition in congregate settings, respectively. Ultraviolet radiation proves effective in deactivating pathogenic microorganisms, characterized by a decay rate constant ranging from 0.0446 m 2 J −1 to 0.464 m 2 J −1 , depending on the wavelength and the type of pathogenic microorganisms. The time response of Ultraviolet radiation is up to 12 min to achieve 92.1 % sterilisation. Despite the reduction in the sterilisation ratio of Ultraviolet radiation, maintaining a high ventilation rate is highly recommended to eliminate genetic material from pathogenic microorganisms. When the excimer lamp is installed higher than 1.9 m above the floor level, the radiation intensities at both standing and sitting height become lower than the safety threshold value of 0.166 W m −2 . A combination of UV radiation at 222 nm and ventilation is effective for neutralising both gram-positive and -negative bacteria and can contribute to stop the spread of infectious diseases in congregate settings.

Abstract:Upper-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) technology can potentially inhibit the transmission of airborne disease pathogens. There is a lack of quantitative evaluation of the performance of the upper-room UVGI for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) airborne transmission under the combined effects of ventilation and UV irradiation. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the performance of the upper-room UVGI system for reducing SARS-CoV-2 virus transmission in a hospital isolation environment. Computational fluid dynamics and virological data on SARS-CoV-2 were integrated to obtain virus aerosol exposure in the hospital isolation environment containing buffer rooms, wards and bathrooms. The UV inactivation model was applied to investigate the effects of ventilation rate, irradiation flux and irradiation height on the upper-room UVGI performance. The results showed that increasing ventilation rate from 8 to 16 air changes per hour (ACH) without UVGI obtained 54.32% and 45.63% virus reduction in the wards and bathrooms, respectively. However, the upper-room UVGI could achieve 90.43% and 99.09% virus disinfection, respectively, with the ventilation rate of 8 ACH and the irradiation flux of 10 μW cm<sup>-2</sup>. Higher percentage of virus could be inactivated by the upper-room UVGI at a lower ventilation rate; the rate of improvement of UVGI elimination effect slowed down with the increase of irradiation flux. Increase irradiation height at lower ventilation rate was more effective in improving the UVGI performance than the increase in irradiation flux at smaller irradiation height. These results could provide theoretical support for the practical application of UVGI in hospital isolation environments.

Increased recovery of salmonellae from environmental samples enriched with buffered peptone water

Abstract:The incidence and persistence of salmonellae in weather pools on the top of Stone Mountain were investigated with lactose and buffered peptone water used as pre-enrichment broths. A total of 162 samples were collected from 16 weather pools over a 3-month period. The use of buffered peptone water increased the recovery of salmonellae by approximately 25%. The combined use of direct enrichment in tetrathionate broth containing brilliant green dye and pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water followed by enrichment in tetrathionate broth made it possible to detect all 37 of the contaminated samples. All of the isolates were Salmonella bareilly, the only serotype recovered in a previous study. All but one of the isolations were made from moist or wet samples. S. bareilly was isolated from rabbit dung and litter collected near the weather pools, but attempts to trap rabbits for study were unsuccessful. Random samples taken along a side of the mountain yielded S. bareilly in weather pools within the upper third of the mountain; below this level, S. weslaco and S. memphis were recovered, but not S. bareilly.
Evaluation of Germicidal Ultraviolet-C disinfection in a Real-World Outpatient Healthcare Environment

Abstract:Background The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for effective infection control in outpatient healthcare settings. Germicidal Ultraviolet-C (GUV) light, known for inactivating microorganisms by damaging their DNA or RNA, offers a potential solution. This study examines the efficacy of GUV air disinfection systems in real-world outpatient environments. Methods We deployed upper-room and far-UV GUV fixtures in three outpatient facilities, assessing their impact on bacterial loads through air and surface sampling and bioindicator tests. Occupancy was also monitored. Results While manual air and surface sampling did not show a significant difference in bacterial loads between control and UV-C-treated groups, bioindicator tests demonstrated a high level of spore inactivation (up to 99.7% for upper-room GUV and 96.26% for far-UV). Occupancy levels did not significantly influence these outcomes. Discussion The discrepancy between bioindicator efficacy and environmental sampling results suggests limitations in the latter's ability to accurately capture environmental bioburden. Bioindicators proved to be reliable for in-situ validation of UV-C surface disinfection. Conclusions Bioindicators are effective for validating GUV surface disinfection efficacy in healthcare settings, though further research is needed to optimize environmental sampling methods for assessing GUV's impact on real-world bacterial loads.

Abstract:There has been increasing interest in the use of upper-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) because of its proven effectiveness in disinfecting airborne pathogens. An improved drift flux mathematical model is developed for optimizing the design of indoor upper-room UVGI systems by predicting the distribution and inactivation of bioaerosols in a ventilation room equipped with a UVGI system. The model takes into account several bacteria removal mechanisms such as convection, turbulent diffusion, deposition and UV inactivation. Before applying the model, the natural die-off rate and susceptibility constants of bioaerosols were measured experimentally. Two bacteria aerosols, Escherichia coli and Serratia marcescens , were tested for this purpose. It was found out that the general decay trend of the bioaerosol concentration predicted by the numerical model agrees well with the experimental measurements. The modelling results agree better with experimental observations for the case when the UVGI inactivation mechanism dominates at the upper-room region than for the case without UVGI. The numerical results also illustrate that the spatial distribution of airborne bacteria was influenced by both air-flow pattern and irradiance distribution. In addition to predicting the local variation of concentration, the model assesses the overall performance of an upper-room UVGI system. This model has great potential for optimizing the design of indoor an upper-room UVGI systems.

Systematical Investigations on Disinfection Effectiveness of Far-UVC (222 Nm) Irradiation: from Laboratory Study to Field Tests

Abstract:The spread of pathogenic microorganisms in public spaces poses a great threat to human health. Far-UVC irradiation is regarded as an efficient method for inactivating most pathogenic microorganisms. Nevertheless, most of the studies on it have been done in laboratory, and there is still little knowledge about the disinfection effectiveness of far-UVC irradiation in real life. Here, systematic investigations were conducted to shed light on the disinfection effectiveness of far-UVC irradiation with laboratory studies and field tests in a real operating public lift cabin. The results of the laboratory study demonstrated that far-UVC irradiation can markedly promote the inactivation of the selected 7 types of microorganisms (including bacteria, viruses and fungus species) on steel surface compared to that on the glass surface, due to the synergistic effect of direct and reflected far-UVC light. This improvement was identified in the field test by employing the far-UVC device for disinfecting the surfaces of the lift cabin which are mostly made of stainless steel. Furthermore, the long-term field test of about 4 months also suggested that both environmental temperature and relative humidity (RH) affect the far-UVC disinfection effectiveness, where the best inactivation efficiency (99.9%) on the surface of lift button and handrail was achieved in the environmental temperature range of 23.5-25.5°C and the RH range of 60-70% at a low UVC dose of 5.2 mJ/cm2. In addition, >99.9% of airborne bacteria were inactivated in a chamber at a far-UVC dose of 15 mJ/cm2, showing a better performance of far-UVC for air disinfection compared to other technologies. This study systematically investigates the performance of far-UVC irradiation for surface and air disinfection in an actual environment, which provides helpful guidance for controlling the spread of pathogenic microorganisms in public spaces, especially in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Air Disinfection Effect of Different Human-Machine Coexistence Disinfection Methods

Abstract:ObjectiveTo compare the air disinfection effects of different human-machine coexistence disinfection methods in the high-risk areas of airborne diseases in medical and healthcare institutions, and to provide a reference for the prevention and control of airborne diseases in medical and healthcare institutions.MethodsField trials were conducted in the fever clinic, the infection disease department, and dental clinics of a tertiary hospital in Shanghai, respectively. The existing air disinfection methods (plasma air disinfection machine, circulating air ultraviolet disinfection machine or negative pressure ventilation system), upper-room 222 nm ultraviolet germicidal system, and the combination of the existing air disinfection methods and upper-room 222 nm ultraviolet germicidal system were all used in each location in the experiment group. The control group did not adopt specific air disinfection methods. Air sampling was conducted by the six-level sieve hole microbial sampler or the flat slab exposure method. The daily air sampling time was from 8:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m., with one sample per hour, and a total of 9 samples were taken. The disinfection effects were compared by calculating the total number of airborne bacteria colonies and the sterilization rate for each disinfection method.ResultsThe total numbers of airborne bacteria colonies in the fever outpatient infusion room, the ward and nurse station of infection disease department of 222 nm group were lower than that in the control group (P=0.005, P<0.001, P<0.001). The total numbers of airborne bacteria colonies in the fever outpatient infusion room and the dental examination room of 222 nm group were lower than that in the control group or plasma air disinfection machine group (P=0.022, P=0.014). The total numbers of airborne bacteria colonies in the nucleic acid sampling room of plasma air disinfection machine group combined with 222 nm group were lower than that in plasma air disinfection machine group (P=0.019). The total numbers of airborne bacteria colonies in the CT examination room of fever clinic of the 222 nm group were lower than that in the circulating air ultraviolet disinfection machine group (P=0.002). The total numbers of airborne bacteria colonies in the CT examination room of 222 nm group combined with circulating air ultraviolet disinfection machine were lower than that of circulating air ultraviolet disinfection machine group and the control group (P=0.008, P<0.001). The air sterilization rate of upper-room 222 nm ultraviolet germicidal system ranged from 48.04% to 73.74%. The air sterilization rate of plasma air/circulating air ultraviolet disinfection machine combined with the upper-room 222 nm ultraviolet germicidal system ranged from 6.86% to 73.77%.ConclusionUpper-room 222 nm ultraviolet germicidal system could effectively reduce airborne colonies in the air and improve air hygiene quality in both clinic and ward environments with high airborne transmission risks.

Abstract:Many occupations involve potential exposures, directly or indirectly, to sources of beta radiation. The region of highest exposure, in many cases, will be the extremities and in particular the fingertips of people handling beta sources. Because current extremity dosimeters can significantly underestimate beta doses to the fingertips, an improved fingertip beta dosimeter was developed. The dosimeter employs a multi-element, multi-filter concept by stacking four or five thin (0.13 mm) LiF-Teflon TLDs to form the beta detector element. The entire dosimeter is approximately 1 mm thick, flexible and rugged enough for field use without interference of the user's manual dexterity. The fingertip dosimeter provides data for determining the beta energy of each exposure. The beta energy can be used to determine the TLD correction factor for converting the TLD output to beta dose. The data can be used to reconstruct the beta depth dose curve and the depth dose curve can be used to calculate the beta dose in tissue at 7 mg cm-2, for legal reporting purposes, or at any other desired depth within the range of the beta radiation. Relationships between the effective mass absorption coefficient and beta energy and between the beta correction factor and beta energy were determined for use in this study. Beta sources were fabricated for these studies, and an extrapolation chamber was used to determine reference beta doses. Tests of the fingertip dosimeter were performed by exposing it to single beta sources and to multiple beta sources. The dosimeter should be useful for monitoring exposures to beta energies ranging from 0.29-2.5 MeV.
Investigations of the UVC 222 NM air cleaning system in an air-conditioned room

Abstract:Far-Ultraviolet-C (far-UVC) 222 nm was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic to disinfect the airborne pathogens, particularly SARS-CoV-2. Although far-UVC 222 nm has shown promising results in surface disinfection, its efficacy in air disinfection remains uncertain due to additional variables in air. This study investigated the efficacy of far-UVC 222 nm UVGI in air disinfection experimentally, using total plate count, and input the measured far-UVC intensity into the computational fluid dynamic model to predict infection risk using the Wells-Riley model. Experimental results indicated that after 1 h of far-UVC irradiation, an equivalent far-UVC dosage of 21.31 J/m 2 , airborne bacteria concentration was reduced by 44.4 %–74.1 %, while airborne fungal concentration showed a marginal reduction. In a recirculating air-conditioned room, a 20 W far-UVC fixture installation, referred to as Case 1, demonstrated the highest available dosage of 7.66 % difference compared to Case 2. The use of far-UVC in Case 1 can reduce the risk of infection for the influenza H1N1, SARS-CoV-2, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis by 54.48 %, 60.06 %, and 83.73 %, respectively. The study suggests installing far-UVC near the recirculating air-conditioner supply air jet and away from surrounding walls for optimum effectiveness. These results provide recommendations for alternatives to upper-room UVGI, offering a viable option for continuous room air and surface disinfection.

Abstract:Numerical models have been used to predict the efficacy of ultraviolet (UV) lamps in disinfecting indoor bioaerosols. However, detailed experimental data on both air and surface viral inactivation for model validation are lacking. This study aimed to experimentally validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-Lagrangian model for disinfection of airborne and surface viruses with far-UVC light. The susceptibility constants (Z-value) of MS2 virus in the air and on surfaces irradiated by 222 nm far-UVC light were measured. The UVC irradiance distribution, the airborne MS2 concentrations as a function of time, and the surface MS2 count in a full-scale chamber with a 222 nm far-UVC lamp were also measured. The comparison between simulation and experiments showed that the numerical model can predict the inactivation of airborne and surface viruses reasonably well. The validated numerical model was then used to calculate the disinfection of airborne and deposited SARS-CoV-2 in a dental clinic and a shared office. It was found that far-UVC lamps can effectively inactivate airborne and surface SARS-CoV-2 simultaneously in both the clinic and the office. The experimental results can be used as a benchmark for model validation, and the case studies can improve our understanding of far-UVC disinfection in real-life indoor environments.

Abstract:In dental clinics with an open floor plan, the risk of patient-to-patient transmission of respiratory disease is a concern. During dental procedures large amounts of bioaerosol are produced and patients cannot wear personal protective equipment. This paper examines how to effectively deploy air cleaner to reduce the infection risk in dental clinics with an open floor plan. Various locations of air cleaners at various clean air delivery rates (CADRs) were investigated. The dispersion of bioaerosol was studied through numerical simulations, and risk assessment was performed by a dose-response method. The findings indicated that dental patients downstream of the background ventilation have a higher infection risk than those to the left and right of an infected patient (i.e., the source). The lowest infection risks for the adjacent patients were found when the air cleaner was place opposite to the dentists, i.e., on the floor at low CADR levels of 2.2 m 3 /min or on the bench at CADR levels of 4.4 m 3 /min or greater. The results of this study indicated that air cleaner can mitigate the risk of patient-to-patient transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in dental clinics with an open floor plan. Background CADR levels determine the optimal placement of air cleaners.

Abstract:The application of 222 nm light from KrCl excimer lamps (GUV222 or Far-UVC) is a promising approach to reduce the indoor transmission of airborne pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus. GUV222 inactivates airborne pathogens and is believed to be relatively safe for human skin and eye exposure. However, UV light initiates photochemical reactions which may negatively impact indoor air quality. We conducted a series of experiments to assess the formation of ozone (O3), and resulting formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA), induced by commercial far-UVC devices in an office environment (small conference room) with an air exchange rate of 1.3 h-1. We studied scenarios with a single far-UVC lamp, corresponding to the manufacturer’s recommendations for disinfection of a space that size, and with four far-UVC lamps, to test conditions of greater far-UVC fluence. The single lamp did not significantly impact O3 or fine particulate matter levels in the room. Consistent with previous studies in the literature, the higher far-UVC fluences lead to increases in O3 of 5 to 10 ppb above background, and minor increases in particulate matter (16% ± 10 % increase in particle number count). The use of far-UVC at minimum intensities required for disinfection, and in conjunction with adequate ventilation rates (e.g. ANSI/ASHRAE recommendations), may allow the reduction of airborne pathogen levels while minimizing the formation of air pollutants in furnished indoor environments.

Abstract:During the COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing amount of evidence has suggested that the virus can be transmitted through the air inside buildings. The ventilation system used to create the indoor environment would facilitate the transmission of the airborne infectious diseases. However, the existing ventilation systems in most buildings cannot supply sufficient clean outdoor air for diluting the virus concentration. To reduce the airborne infection risk and minimize energy consumption, especially in existing buildings with well-mixed ventilation systems, this investigation used an ultraviolet-C (UV-C) air disinfection device (Rheem's third generation products, RM3) with 99.9% disinfection efficiency to clean air carrying the COVID-19 virus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2) which could help promote environmental sustainability and create healthy cities. This investigation assessed the impact of the RM3 UV-C units on the infection risk, the number of RM3 UV-C units required, and the strategy for decreasing the infection risk, with the use of computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) numerical simulations. An actual office building with a combination of individual offices and workstations was selected as an example for the research. According to the numerical results, the best strategy would be to use a combination of 100% outside air and UV-C in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) ducts with air disinfected by the RM3 UV-C units. The infection risk in the office building could thus be reduced to a negligible level. These findings could provide theoretical basis and engineering application basis for COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control.

Abstract:ABSTRACT An increased understanding of the epidemiology of Gibberella zeae will contribute to a rational and informed approach to the management of Fusarium head blight (FHB). An integral phase of the FHB cycle is the deposition of airborne spores, yet there is no information available on the spatial pattern of spore deposition of G. zeae above wheat canopies. We examined spatial patterns of viable spore deposition of G. zeae over rotational (lacking cereal debris) wheat fields in New York in 2002 and 2004. Viable, airborne spores (ascospores and macroconidia) of G. zeae were collected above wheat spikes on petri plates containing a selective medium and the resulting colonies were counted. Spores of G. zeae were collected over a total of 68 field environments (three wheat fields during 54 day and night sample periods over 2 years) from spike emergence to kernel milk stages of local wheat. Spatial patterns of spore deposition were visualized by contour plots of spore counts over entire fields. The spatial pattern of spore deposition was unique for each field environment during each day and night sample period. Spore deposition patterns during individual sample periods were classified by spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE) statistics and Mantel tests. Both analyses indicated that the majority (93%) of the spore deposition events were random, with the remainder being aggregated. All of the aggregated patterns were observed during the night. Observed patterns of spore deposition were independent of the mean number of viable spores deposited during individual sample periods. The spatial pattern for cumulative spore deposition during anthesis in both years became aggregated over time. Contour maps of daily and cumulative spore deposition could be compared with contour maps of FHB incidence to gain insights into inoculum thresholds and the timing of effective inoculum for infection.
Cost-effective instant air disinfection for building ventilation system by a combination of UV and micro-static electricity

Abstract:The increased threats of pathogenic bioaerosol make air disinfection in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems crucial to occupants' health. To satisfy the high efficiency, superspeed, and wide temperature range of HVAC air disinfection, UV irradiation (UV254/ UV185+254) and its combination with micro-static electricity were studied in two full-scale ducted ventilation systems. UV254 could efficiently disinfect S.albus (>99 %) at high temperatures (31 +/- 2 degrees C) and low airflow rates (1.2 m s(-1)) but was weakened at lower temperatures and higher airflow rates. Its combination with micro-static electricity could remarkably overcome these adverse factors and realize efficient disinfection within the retention time of 0.21 s. Especially for the relatively stubborn B.subtilis var. niger, the combination process improved the disinfection efficiency to 82 % at 16 +/- 2 degrees C and the airflow rate of 2.4 m s(-1), while UV254 was only 52.9 %. Since the UV185+254 disinfection was more effective than that of UV254, the UV185+254 based combination could further enhance the B.subtilis var. niger to 93.1 %. Besides the disinfection stability, the combination process has advantages in pressure drop (around 50 Pa), energy consumption (e.g., 0.115 kW.h km(-3)), and equipment costs (1,500-3,000 CNY), making it potentially cost-effective for air disinfection in HVAC systems.

Abstract:It has been demonstrated in laboratory environments that Ultraviolet-C (UVC) light is effective at inactivating airborne viruses. However due to multiple parameters, it cannot be assumed that the air inside a room will be efficiently disinfected by commercial germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) systems. This research utilises numerical simulations of airflow, viral spread, inactivation by UVC, and removal by mechanical ventilation in a typical classroom. The viral load in the classroom is compared for conventional upper-room GUV and the emerging "far-UVC". In our simulated environment GUV is shown to be effective in both well and poorly ventilated rooms, with greatest benefit in the latter. At current exposure limits, 18 commercial far-UVC systems were as effective at reducing viral load as a single upper-room GUV. Improvements in Far-UVC irradiation distribution and recently proposed increases to exposure limits would dramatically increase the efficacy of Far-UVC devices. Modifications to current Far-UVC devices, which would improve their real-world efficacy, could be implemented now without requiring legislative change. The prospect of increased safety limits coupled with our suggested technological modifications could usher in a new era of safe and rapid whole room air disinfection in occupied indoor spaces.

Design and development of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation device for controlling airborne bacteria in the workplace

Abstract:Objective: To design and develop an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) device for controlling airborne bacteria in the workplace of hospitals. Material and method: The constructed UVGI device was a chamber, consisting of a return air grille, an air supply grille, two 30-watt ultraviolet lamps and a cross flow fan inside the chamber. The efficiency of the UVGI device was tested at three different flow rates of 15.7, 31.6 and 46.1 m3/min, respectively by collecting bacteria samples before and after operating the device for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Results: The efficiency of the UVGI device at flow rates of 15.7, 31.6 and 46.1 m3/min was 60.6, 92.8 and 80.8%, respectively and the bacteria concentration was reduced to less than 100 cfu/m3, except at the flow rate of 15.7 m3/min. The application of the UVGI device in the specimen-received room showed that the concentration of bacteria was reduced to less than 100 cfu/m3 after 180 minutes. Conclusion: The constructed UVGI device was effective to reduce airborne bacteria in workplace of hospital.
