Abstract:Background: The one of the most commonly used reference system for clinical gait analysis is an optical motion capture system (OMC) using a multi-segment foot model. A time- and cost-efficient alternative could be an inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based systems. However, these are limited to a single segment approach for the foot and ankle. Therefore, the current setup was modified to be based on a 2-segment foot model, allowing for a separate analysis of the hind- and midfoot. The study aimed to evaluate the reliability (inter-rater, intra-rater, and test-retest reliability) of an IMU-based 2-segment foot model. Material and methods: Twelve healthy subjects were recruited to test the inter-rater, intra-rater, and test-retest reliability of the new IMU based 2-segment foot model. Gait analysis was performed on a treadmill at a constant speed of 4 km/h. Kinematic data of the tibia/hindfoot, tibia/forefoot and hindfoot/forefoot over 100 % gait cycle were analyzed. The reliability was tested by using statistical parametric mapping (SPM) and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: The SPM showed no significant difference for inter-, intra-rater, and test-retest reliability, but for a small segment of tibia/forefoot dorsiflexion test-retest reliability (2.1° difference). The single standard deviation measurement error for the sagittal and transverse plane was <5° and worse for the frontal plane. Conclusion: The new 2-segment foot model revealed a high inter-rater, intra-rater, and test-retest reliability. It is suitable for use in adult clinical practice. Still, comparative data to the OMC system using a multi-segment foot model are missing.

Abstract:Gait analysis is used widely in clinical practice to evaluate abnormal gait caused by disease. Conventionally, medical professionals use motion capture systems or make visual observations to evaluate a patient's gait. Recent biomedical engineering studies have proposed easy-to-use gait analysis methods employing wearable sensors with inertial measurement units (IMUs). IMUs placed on the shanks just above the ankles allow for long-term gait monitoring because the participant can walk with or without shoes during the analysis. To the knowledge of the authors, no IMU-based gait analysis method has been reported that estimates stride length, gait speed, stride duration, stance duration, and swing duration simultaneously. In the present study, we tested a proposed gait analysis method that uses IMUs attached on the shanks to estimate foot trajectory and temporal gait parameters. Our proposed method comprises two steps: stepwise dissociation of continuous gait data into multiple steps and three-dimensional trajectory estimation from data obtained from accelerometers and gyroscopes. We evaluated this proposed method by analyzing the gait of 19 able-bodied participants (mean age 23.9 years, 9 men and 10 women). Wearable sensors were attached on the participants' shanks, and we measured three-axis acceleration and three-axis angular velocity with the sensors to estimate foot trajectory during walking. We compared gait parameters estimated from the foot trajectory obtained with the proposed method and those measured with a motion capture system. Mean accuracy (± standard deviation) was 0.054 ± 0.031 m for stride length, 0.034 ± 0.039 m/s for gait speed, 0.002 ± 0.020 s for stride duration, 0.000 ± 0.017 s for stance duration, and 0.002 ± 0.024 s for swing duration. These results suggest that the proposed method is suitable for gait analysis, whereas there is a room for improvement of its accuracy and further development of this IMU-based gait analysis method will enable us to use such systems for clinical gait analysis.

Abstract:Performing orthopaedic surgery in beach chair position (BCP) is a common procedure in Denmark. In this case report we present a patient, who underwent standard procedure with no variations according to the general anaesthesia. The arterial blood pressure after entering BCP and during surgery was acceptable. In the recovery phase the patient did not gain full consciousness, his blood pressure turned high and he developed seizures. A. cerebri media infarction was identified, and severe brain damage was the consequence. We question the rationale for using BCP as well as the use of phenylephrine for the cerebral hypoperfusion.

Abstract:Multisegmented foot models (MSFMs) capture kinematic and kinetic data of specific regions of the foot instead of representing the foot as a single, rigid segment. Models differ by the number of segments and segment definitions, so there is no consensus for best practice. It is unknown whether MSFMs yield the same joint kinematic and kinetic data and what level of detail is necessary to accurately measure such values. We compared the angle, moment, and power measurements at the tibiotalar, midtarsal, and metatarsophalangeal joints of four MSFMs using motion capture data of young adult runners during stance phase of barefoot walking and jogging. Of these models, three were validated: Oxford Foot Model, Milwaukee Foot Model, and Ghent Foot Model. One model was developed based upon literature review of existing models: the "Vogel" model. We performed statistical parametric mapping comparing joint measurements from each model to the corresponding results from the Oxford Model, the most heavily studied MSFM. We found that the Oxford Foot Model, Milwaukee Foot Model, Vogel Foot Model, and Ghent Foot Model do not provide the same results. The changes in model segment definitions impact the degrees of freedom in ways that alter the measured kinematic function of the foot, which in turn impacts the kinetic results. We also found that dynamic function of the midfoot/arch may be better captured by MSFMs with a separate midfoot segment. The results of this study capture the variability in performance of MSFMs and indicate a need to standardize the design of MSFMs.

Ability of a multi-segment foot model to measure kinematic differences in cavus, neutrally aligned, asymptomatic planus, and symptomatic planus foot types

Abstract:Background: Multi-segment foot models (MFMs) provide a better understanding of the intricate biomechanics of the foot, yet it is unclear if they accurately differentiate foot type function during locomotion. Research question: We employed an MFM to detect subtle kinematic differences between foot types, including: pes cavus, neutrally aligned, and asymptomatic and symptomatic pes planus. The study investigates how variable the results of this MFM are and if it can detect kinematic differences between pathologic and non-pathologic foot types during the stance phase of gait. Methods: Independently, three raters instrumented three subjects on three days to assess variability. In a separate cohort, each foot type was statically quantified for ten subjects per group. Each subject walked while instrumented with a four-segment foot model to assess static alignment and foot motion during the stance phase of gait. Statistical analysis performed with a linear mixed effects regression. Results: Model variability was highest for between-day and lowest for between-rater, with all variability measures being within the true sample variance. Almost all static measures (radiographic, digital scan, and kinematic markers) differed significantly by foot type. Sagittal hindfoot to leg and forefoot to leg kinematics differed between foot types during late stance, as well as coronal hallux to forefoot range of motion. The MFM had low between-rater variability and may be suitable for multiple raters to apply to a single study sample without introducing significant error. The model, however, only detected a few dynamic differences, with the most dramatic being the hallux to forefoot coronal plane range of motion. Significance: Results only somewhat aligned with previous work. It remains unclear if the MFM is sensitive enough to accurately detect different motion between foot types (pathologic and non-pathologic). A more accurate method of tracking foot bone motion (e.g., biplane fluoroscopy) may be needed to address this question.

Validation of Non-Restrictive Inertial Gait Analysis of Individuals with Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury in Clinical Settings

Abstract:Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) have gained popularity in gait analysis and human motion tracking, and they provide certain advantages over stationary line-of-sight-dependent Optical Motion Capture (OMC) systems. IMUs appear as an appropriate alternative solution to reduce dependency on bulky, room-based hardware and facilitate the analysis of walking patterns in clinical settings and daily life activities. However, most inertial gait analysis methods are unpractical in clinical settings due to the necessity of precise sensor placement, the need for well-performed calibration movements and poses, and due to distorted magnetometer data in indoor environments as well as nearby ferromagnetic material and electronic devices. To address these limitations, recent literature has proposed methods for self-calibrating magnetometer-free inertial motion tracking, and acceptable performance has been achieved in mechanical joints and in individuals without neurological disorders. However, the performance of such methods has not been validated in clinical settings for individuals with neurological disorders, specifically individuals with incomplete Spinal Cord Injury (iSCI). In the present study, we used recently proposed inertial motion-tracking methods, which avoid magnetometer data and leverage kinematic constraints for anatomical calibration. We used these methods to determine the range of motion of the Flexion/Extension (F/E) hip and Abduction/Adduction (A/A) angles, the F/E knee angles, and the Dorsi/Plantar (D/P) flexion ankle joint angles during walking. Data (IMU and OMC) of five individuals with no neurological disorders (control group) and five participants with iSCI walking for two minutes on a treadmill in a self-paced mode were analyzed. For validation purposes, the OMC system was considered as a reference. The mean absolute difference (MAD) between calculated range of motion of joint angles was 5.00°, 5.02°, 5.26°, and 3.72° for hip F/E, hip A/A, knee F/E, and ankle D/P flexion angles, respectively. In addition, relative stance, swing, double support phases, and cadence were calculated and validated. The MAD for the relative gait phases (stance, swing, and double support) was 1.7%, and the average cadence error was 0.09 steps/min. The MAD values for RoM and relative gait phases can be considered as clinically acceptable. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed methodology is promising, enabling non-restrictive inertial gait analysis in clinical settings.

Abstract:Enhancement of activity is one major topic related to the aging society. Therefore, it is necessary to understand people's motion and identify possible risk factors during activity. Technology can be used to monitor motion patterns during daily life. Especially the use of artificial intelligence combined with wearable sensors can simplify measurement systems and might at some point replace the standard motion capturing using optical measurement technologies. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the estimation of 3D joint angles and joint moments of the lower limbs based on IMU data using a feedforward neural network. The dataset summarizes optical motion capture data of former studies and additional newly collected IMU data. Based on the optical data, the acceleration and angular rate of inertial sensors was simulated. The data was augmented by simulating different sensor positions and orientations. In this study, gait analysis was undertaken with 30 participants using a conventional motion capture set-up based on an optoelectronic system and force plates in parallel with a custom IMU system consisting of five sensors. A mean correlation coefficient of 0.85 for the joint angles and 0.95 for the joint moments was achieved. The RMSE for the joint angle prediction was smaller than 4.8° and the nRMSE for the joint moment prediction was below 13.0%. Especially in the sagittal motion plane good results could be achieved. As the measured dataset is rather small, data was synthesized to complement the measured data. The enlargement of the dataset improved the prediction of the joint angles. While size did not affect the joint moment prediction, the addition of noise to the dataset resulted in an improved prediction accuracy. This indicates that research on appropriate augmentation techniques for biomechanical data is useful to further improve machine learning applications.

The effect of including a mobile arch, toe joint, and joint coupling on predictive neuromuscular simulations of human walking

Abstract:Predictive neuromuscular simulations are a powerful tool for studying the biomechanics of human walking, and deriving design criteria for technical devices like prostheses or biorobots. Good agreement between simulation and human data is essential for transferability to the real world. The human foot is often modeled with a single rigid element, but knowledge of how the foot model affects gait prediction is limited. Standardized procedures for selecting appropriate foot models are lacking. We performed 2D predictive neuromuscular simulations with six different foot models of increasing complexity to answer two questions: What is the effect of a mobile arch, a toe joint, and the coupling of toe and arch motion through the plantar fascia on gait prediction? and How much of the foot's anatomy do we need to model to predict sagittal plane walking kinematics and kinetics in good agreement with human data? We found that the foot model had a significant impact on ankle kinematics during terminal stance, push-off, and toe and arch kinematics. When focusing only on hip and knee kinematics, rigid foot models are sufficient. We hope our findings will help guide the community in modeling the human foot according to specific research goals and improve neuromuscular simulation accuracy.

Abstract:The role of the many small foot articulations and plantar tissues in gait is not well understood. While kinematic multi-segment foot models have increased our knowledge of foot segmental motions, the integration of kinetics with these models could further advance our understanding of foot mechanics and energetics. However, capturing and effectively utilizing segmental ground reaction forces remains challenging. The purposes of this study were to (1) develop methodology to integrate plantar pressures and shear stresses with a multi-segment foot model, and (2) generate and concisely display key normative data from this combined system. Twenty-six young healthy adults walked barefoot (1.3 m/s) across a pressure/shear sensor with markers matching a published 4-segment foot model. A novel anatomical/geometric template-based masking method was developed that successfully separated regions aligned with model segmentation. Directional shear force plots were created to summarize complex plantar shear distributions, showing opposing shear forces both between and within segments. Segment centers of pressure (CoPs) were shown to be primarily stationary within each segment, suggesting that forward progression in healthy gait arises primarily from redistributing weight across relatively fixed contact points as opposed to CoP movement within a segment. Inverse dynamics-based normative foot joint moments and power were presented in the context of these CoPs to aid in interpretation of tissue stresses. Overall, this work represents a successful integration of motion capture with direct plantar pressure and shear measurements for multi-segment foot kinetics. The presented tools are versatile enough to be used with other models and contexts, while the presented normative database may be useful as a baseline comparison for clinical work in gait energetics and efficiency, balance, and motor control. We hope that this work will aid in the advancement and availability of kinetic MSF modeling, increase our knowledge of foot mechanics, and eventually lead to improved clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation, and treatment.

Abstract:Background Foot deformities (e.g. planovalgus and cavovarus) are very common in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP), with the midfoot often being involved. Dynamic foot function can be assessed with 3D gait analysis including a multi-segment foot model. Incorporating a midfoot segment in such a model, allows quantification of separate Chopart and Lisfranc joint kinematics. Yet, midfoot kinematics have not previously been reported in CP. Research questions What is the difference in multi-segment kinematics including midfoot joints between common foot deformities in CP and typically-developing feet? Methods 103 feet of 57 children with spastic CP and related conditions were retrospectively included and compared with 15 typically-developing children. All children underwent clinical gait analysis with the Amsterdam Foot Model marker set. Multi-segment foot kinematics were calculated for three strides per foot and averaged. A k-means cluster analysis was performed to identify foot deformity groups that were present within CP data. The deformity type represented by each cluster was based on the foot posture index. Kinematic output of the clusters was compared to typically-developing data for a static standing trial and for the range of motion and kinematic waveforms during walking, using regular and SPM independent t-tests respectively. Results A neutral, planovalgus and varus cluster were identified. Neutral feet showed mostly similar kinematics as typically-developing data. Planovalgus feet showed increased ankle valgus and Chopart dorsiflexion, eversion and abduction. Varus feet showed increased ankle varus and Chopart inversion and adduction. Significance This study is the first to describe Chopart and Lisfranc joint kinematics in different foot deformities of children with CP. It shows that adding a midfoot segment can provide additional clinical and kinematic information. It highlights joint angles that are more distinctive between deformities, which could be helpful to optimize the use of multi-segment foot kinematics in the clinical decision making process.

Development of a Subject-Specific Foot-Ground Contact Model for Walking

Abstract:Computational walking simulations could facilitate the development of improved treatments for clinical conditions affecting walking ability. Since an effective treatment is likely to change a patient's foot-ground contact pattern and timing, such simulations should ideally utilize deformable foot-ground contact models tailored to the patient's foot anatomy and footwear. However, no study has reported a deformable modeling approach that can reproduce all six ground reaction quantities (expressed as three reaction force components, two center of pressure (CoP) coordinates, and a free reaction moment) for an individual subject during walking. This study proposes such an approach for use in predictive optimizations of walking. To minimize complexity, we modeled each foot as two rigid segments-a hindfoot (HF) segment and a forefoot (FF) segment-connected by a pin joint representing the toes flexion-extension axis. Ground reaction forces (GRFs) and moments acting on each segment were generated by a grid of linear springs with nonlinear damping and Coulomb friction spread across the bottom of each segment. The stiffness and damping of each spring and common friction parameter values for all springs were calibrated for both feet simultaneously via a novel three-stage optimization process that used motion capture and ground reaction data collected from a single walking trial. The sequential three-stage process involved matching (1) the vertical force component, (2) all three force components, and finally (3) all six ground reaction quantities. The calibrated model was tested using four additional walking trials excluded from calibration. With only small changes in input kinematics, the calibrated model reproduced all six ground reaction quantities closely (root mean square (RMS) errors less than 13 N for all three forces, 25 mm for anterior-posterior (AP) CoP, 8 mm for medial-lateral (ML) CoP, and 2 N·m for the free moment) for both feet in all walking trials. The largest errors in AP CoP occurred at the beginning and end of stance phase when the vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) was small. Subject-specific deformable foot-ground contact models created using this approach should enable changes in foot-ground contact pattern to be predicted accurately by gait optimization studies, which may lead to improvements in personalized rehabilitation medicine.
Validity and Sensitivity of an Inertial Measurement Unit-Driven Biomechanical Model of Motor Variability for Gait

Abstract:Motor variability in gait is frequently linked to fall risk, yet field-based biomechanical joint evaluations are scarce. We evaluated the validity and sensitivity of an inertial measurement unit (IMU)-driven biomechanical model of joint angle variability for gait. Fourteen healthy young adults completed seven-minute trials of treadmill gait at several speeds and arm swing amplitudes. Trunk, pelvis, and lower-limb joint kinematics were estimated by IMU- and optoelectronic-based models using OpenSim. We calculated range of motion (ROM), magnitude of variability (meanSD), local dynamic stability (λmax), persistence of ROM fluctuations (DFAα), and regularity (SaEn) of each angle over 200 continuous strides, and evaluated model accuracy (RMSD: root mean square difference), consistency (ICC2,1: intraclass correlation), biases, limits of agreement, and sensitivity to within-participant gait responses (effects of speed and swing). RMSDs of joint angles were 1.7-9.2° (pooled mean of 4.8°), excluding ankle inversion. ICCs were mostly good to excellent in the primary plane of motion for ROM and in all planes for meanSD and λmax, but were poor to moderate for DFAα and SaEn. Modelled speed and swing responses for ROM, meanSD, and λmax were similar. Results suggest that the IMU-driven model is valid and sensitive for field-based assessments of joint angle time series, ROM in the primary plane of motion, magnitude of variability, and local dynamic stability.
A novel magnet based 3D printed marker wand as basis for repeated in-shoe multi segment foot analysis: a proof of concept

Abstract:Background: Application of in-shoe multi-segment foot kinematic analyses currently faces a number of challenges, including: (i) the difficulty to apply regular markers onto the skin, (ii) the necessity for an adequate shoe which fits various foot morphologies and (iii) the need for adequate repeatability throughout a repeated measure condition. The aim of this study therefore was to design novel magnet based 3D printed markers for repeated in-shoe measurements while using accordingly adapted modified shoes for a specific multi-segment foot model. Methods: Multi-segment foot kinematics of ten participants were recorded and kinematics of hindfoot, midfoot and forefoot were calculated. Dynamic trials were conducted to check for intra and inter-session repeatability when combining novel markers and modified shoes in a repeated measures design. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated to determine reliability. Results: Both repeatability and reliability were proven to be good to excellent with maximum joint angle deviations of 1.11° for intra-session variability and 1.29° for same-day inter-session variability respectively and ICC values of >0.91. Conclusion: The novel markers can be reliably used in future research settings using in-shoe multi-segment foot kinematic analyses with multiple shod conditions.

Abstract:This contribution is concerned with joint angle calculation based on inertial measurement data in the context of human motion analysis. Unlike most robotic devices, the human body lacks even surfaces and right angles. Therefore, we focus on methods that avoid assuming certain orientations in which the sensors are mounted with respect to the body segments. After a review of available methods that may cope with this challenge, we present a set of new methods for: (1) joint axis and position identification; and (2) flexion/extension joint angle measurement. In particular, we propose methods that use only gyroscopes and accelerometers and, therefore, do not rely on a homogeneous magnetic field. We provide results from gait trials of a transfemoral amputee in which we compare the inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based methods to an optical 3D motion capture system. Unlike most authors, we place the optical markers on anatomical landmarks instead of attaching them to the IMUs. Root mean square errors of the knee flexion/extension angles are found to be less than 1° on the prosthesis and about 3° on the human leg. For the plantar/dorsiflexion of the ankle, both deviations are about 1°.

Abstract:Introduction Inertial measurement units (IMUs) may be viable options to collect gait data in clinics. This study compared IMU to motion capture data in individuals who use unilateral lower-limb prostheses. Methods Participants walked with lower-body IMUs and reflective markers in a motion analysis space. Sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle waveforms were extracted for the entire gait cycle. Discrete points of peak flexion, peak extension, and range of motion were extracted from the waveforms. Stance times were also extracted to assess the IMU software’s accuracy at detecting gait events. IMU and motion capture-derived data were compared using absolute differences and root mean square error (RMSE). Results Five individuals ( n = 3 transtibial; n = 2 transfemoral) participated. IMU prosthetic limb data was similar to motion capture (RMSE: waveform ≤4.65°; discrete point ≤9.04°; stance ≤0.03s). However, one transfemoral participant had larger differences at the microprocessor knee joint (RMSE: waveform ≤15.64°; discrete ≤29.21°) from IMU magnetometer interference. Intact limbs tended to have minimal differences between IMU and motion capture data (RMSE: waveform ≤6.33°; discrete ≤9.87°; stance ≤0.04s). Conclusion Findings from this pilot study suggest IMUs have the potential to collect data similar to motion capture systems in sagittal plane kinematics and stance time.

Abstract:(1) Background: Ankle joint power, as an indicator of the ability to control lower limbs, is of great relevance for clinical diagnosis of gait impairment and control of lower limb prosthesis. However, the majority of available techniques for estimating joint power are based on inverse dynamics methods, which require performing a biomechanical analysis of the foot and using a highly instrumented environment to tune the parameters of the resulting biomechanical model. Such techniques are not generally applicable to real-world scenarios in which gait monitoring outside of the clinical setting is desired. This paper proposes a viable alternative to such techniques by using machine learning algorithms to estimate ankle joint power from data collected by two miniature inertial measurement units (IMUs) on the foot and shank, (2) Methods: Nine participants walked on a force-plate-instrumented treadmill wearing two IMUs. The data from the IMUs were processed to train and test a random forest model to estimate ankle joint power. The performance of the model was then evaluated by comparing the estimated power values to the reference values provided by the motion tracking system and the force-plate-instrumented treadmill. (3) Results: The proposed method achieved a high accuracy with the correlation coefficient, root mean square error, and normalized root mean square error of 0.98, 0.06 w/kg, and 1.05% in the intra-subject test, and 0.92, 0.13 w/kg, and 2.37% in inter-subject test, respectively. The difference between the predicted and true peak power values was 0.01 w/kg and 0.14 w/kg with a delay of 0.4% and 0.4% of gait cycle duration for the intra- and inter-subject testing, respectively. (4) Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of using only two IMUs to estimate ankle joint power. The proposed technique provides a basis for developing a portable and compact gait monitoring system that can potentially offer monitoring and reporting on ankle joint power in real-time during activities of daily living.

Abstract:Background: Gait is the manner or style of walking, involving motor control and coordination to adapt to the surrounding environment. Knowing the kinesthetic markers of normal gait is essential for the diagnosis of certain pathologies or the generation of intelligent ortho-prostheses for the treatment or prevention of gait disorders. The aim of the present study was to identify the key features of normal human gait using inertial unit (IMU) recordings in a walking test. Methods: Gait analysis was conducted on 32 healthy participants (age range 19-29 years) at speeds of 2 km/h and 4 km/h using a treadmill. Dynamic data were obtained using a microcontroller (Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense Rev2) with IMU sensors (BMI270). The collected data were processed and analyzed using a custom script (MATLAB 2022b), including the labeling of the four relevant gait phases and events (Stance, Toe-Off, Swing, and Heel Strike), computation of statistical features (64 features), and application of machine learning techniques for classification (8 classifiers). Results: Spider plot analysis revealed significant differences in the four events created by the most relevant statistical features. Among the different classifiers tested, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model using a Cubic kernel achieved an accuracy rate of 92.4% when differentiating between gait events using the computed statistical features. Conclusions: This study identifies the optimal features of acceleration and gyroscope data during normal gait. The findings suggest potential applications for injury prevention and performance optimization in individuals engaged in activities involving normal gait. The creation of spider plots is proposed to obtain a personalised fingerprint of each patient's gait fingerprint that could be used as a diagnostic tool. A deviation from a normal gait pattern can be used to identify human gait disorders. Moving forward, this information has potential for use in clinical applications in the diagnosis of gait-related disorders and developing novel orthoses and prosthetics to prevent falls and ankle sprains.

Abstract:The ability to accurately capture locomotion is relevant in various use cases, in particular in the sports and health area. With the major goal of providing a measurement system that can deliver different types of relevant information (3D body segment kinematics, spatiotemporal locomotion parameters, and locomotion patterns) in-field and in real-time, we propose a novel probabilistic (single-plane) ground contact estimation method, using four contact points defined through a biomechanical foot model, and integrate this into an existing inertial motion capturing method. The resulting method is quantitatively evaluated on simulated and real IMU data in comparison to an optical motion capture system on walking, running, and jumping sequences. The results show its ability to maintain a good average 3D kinematics estimation error on low- and high-acceleration locomotion, whereas many previous accuracy studies restrict themselves to movements with low to moderate global accelerations, such as upper body activities or slow locomotion. Moreover, a qualitative evaluation of the estimated ground contact probabilities demonstrates the method's ability to also provide consistent information also for deriving spatiotemporal locomotion parameters as well as locomotion patterns (e.g., over-pronation/-supination) simultaneously with the 3D kinematics.
