Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) and microplastics (MPs) gradually increased to be prevalent contaminants in soil, it is important to understand their combined effects on different soil-plant systems. We studied how different doses of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene (PE) affected Cd accumulation, pakchoi growth, soil chemical and microbial properties, and metabolomics in two soil types. We found that high-dose MPs decreased Cd accumulation in plants in red soil, while all MPs decreased Cd bioaccumulation in fluvo-aquic soil. This difference was primarily attributed to the increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and pH in red soil by high-dose MPs, which inhibited Cd uptake by plant roots. In contrast, MPs reduced soil nitrate nitrogen and available phosphorus, and weakened Cd mobilization in fluvo-aquic soil. In addition, high-dose PLA proved detrimental to plant health, manifesting in shortened shoot and root lengths. Co-exposure of Cd and MPs induced the shifts in bacterial populations and metabolites, with specific taxa and metabolites closely linked to Cd accumulation. Overall, co-exposure of Cd and MPs regulated plant growth and Cd accumulation by driving changes in soil bacterial community and metabolic pathways caused by soil chemical properties. Our findings could provide insights into the Cd migration in different soil-plant systems under MPs exposure. Environmental Implication Microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd) are common pollutants in farmland soil. Co-exposure of MPs and Cd can alter Cd accumulation in plants, and pose a potential threat to human health through the food chain. Here, we investigated the effects of different types and doses of MPs on Cd accumulation, plant growth, soil microorganisms, and metabolic pathways in different soil-plant systems. Our results can contribute to our understanding of the migration and transport of Cd by MPs in different soil-plant systems and provide a reference for the control of combined pollution in the future research.

Abstract:The co-contamination of soils by microplastics (MPs) and cadmium (Cd), one of the most perilous heavy metals, is emerging as a significant global concern, posing risks to plant productivity and human health. However, there remains a gap in the literature concerning comprehensive evaluations of the combined effects of MPs and Cd on soil-plant-human systems. This review examines the interactions and co-impacts of MPs and Cd in soil-plant-human systems, elucidating their mechanisms and synergistic effects on plant development and health risks. We also review the origins and contamination levels of MPs and Cd, revealing that sewage, atmospheric deposition, and biosolid applications are contributors to the contamination of soil with MPs and Cd. Our meta-analysis demonstrates that MPs significantly (p<0.05) increase the bioavailability of soil Cd and the accumulation of Cd in plant shoots by 6.9 and 9.3 %, respectively. The MPs facilitate Cd desorption from soils through direct adsorption via surface complexation and physical adsorption, as well as indirectly by modifying soil physicochemical properties, such as pH and dissolved organic carbon, and altering soil microbial diversity. These interactions augment the bioavailability of Cd, along with MPs, adversely affect plant growth and its physiological functions. Moreover, the ingestion of MPs and Cd through the food chain significantly enhances the bioaccessibility of Cd and exacerbates histopathological alterations in human tissues, thereby amplifying the associated health risks. This review provides insights into the coexistence of MPs and Cd and their synergistic effects on soil-plant-human systems, emphasizing the need for further research in this critical subject area.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can pose ecological risk to the environment and have the potential to negatively affect human health, raising serious public concerns. It is recognized that MPs could act as a vector for various environmental pollutants including heavy metals and potentially influencing their mobility, fate, and bioavailabilty in the environment. However, knowledge on the mechanisms underpinning the interaction processes between MPs and heavy metals is far from clear. This review discusses the effects of MPs on the adsorption/desorption, speciation and bioavailability, and toxicity of various heavy metals. The present review also systematically identifies the environmental factors (e.g., pH, ionic strength, and organic matters) that could affect their interaction processes. This work aims to establish a meaningful perspective for a comprehensive understanding of the indirect ecological risks of MPs as vectors for contaminants. The work also provides a reference for the development of better regulatory strategies in mitigating the negative effects caused by the co-existence of MPs and heavy metals.

Abstract:Conventional plastics are inherently difficult to degrade, causing serious plastic pollution. With the development of society, biodegradable plastics (BPs) are considered as an alternative to traditional plastics. However, current research indicated that BPs do not undergo complete degradation in natural environments. Instead, they may convert into biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) at an accelerated rate, thereby posing a significant threat to environment. In this paper, the definition, application, distribution, degradation behaviors, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of BPs were reviewed. And the impacts of BMPs on soil and marine ecosystems, in terms of physicochemical property, nutrient cycling, microorganisms, plants and animals were comprehensively summarized. The effects of combined exposure of BMPs with other pollutants, and the mechanism of ecotoxicity induced by BMPs were also addressed. It was found that BMPs reduced pH, increased DOC content, and disrupted the nitrification of nitrogen cycle in soil ecosystem. The shoot dry weight, pod number and root growth of soil plants, and reproduction and body length of soil animals were inhibited by BMPs. Furthermore, the growth of marine plants, and locomotion, body length and survival of marine animals were suppressed by BMPs. Additionally, the ecotoxicity of combined exposure of BMPs with other pollutants has not been uniformly concluded. Exposure to BMPs induced several types of toxicity, including neurotoxicity, gastrointestinal toxicity, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity and genotoxicity. The future calls for heightened attention towards the regulation of the degradation of BPs in the environment, and pursuit of interventions aimed at mitigating their ecotoxicity and potential health risks to human.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) occur widely in terrestrial ecosystems. However, information on the interaction of MPs with metals in terrestrial ecosystems is lacking in the literature. The present study investigated the effects of two types of MPs (high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polystyrene (PS)) with different dosages (i.e., 0, 0.1%, 1%, and 10%) on the uptake and effects of Cd in maize plants grown in an agricultural soil. Results showed that addition of Cd at a 5 mg/kg caused inhibited plant growth and resulted in high Cd accumulation in plant tissues. Polyethylene alone showed no significant phytotoxic effects, but a high-dose of HDPE (10%) amplified Cd phytotoxicity. Polystyrene negatively affected maize growth and phytoxicity further increased in the presence of Cd. Both HDPE and PS caused soil diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extractable Cd concentrations to increase but did not significantly affect Cd uptake into plant tissues. In the soil without Cd addition, HDPE decreased soil pH, while PS did not significantly alter soil pH. However, in the soil spiked with Cd, both HDPE and PS increased pH. Overall, impacts on plant growth and Cd accumulation varied with MP type and dose, and PS induced substantial phytotoxicity. In conclusion, co-occurring MPs can change Cd bioavailability, plant performance, and soil traits. Our findings highlight the ecological impacts that could occur from the release of MPs into soil.

Abstract:Plastic mulching is one of the large contributors to microplastic (MP) accumulation in agricultural landscapes. However, the effects of conventional (PE-MPs) and biodegradable MPs (BMPs) on microbial functional and genomic information encoding nitrogen (N) cycling have yet to be addressed. Here, a soil microcosmic experiment was conducted by adding PE-MPs and BMPs to a Mollisol at dosage of 5% (w/w) followed by incubation for 90 days. The soils and MPs were examined by metagenomics and genome binning methods. The results revealed that BMPs harbored rougher surfaces and induced stronger alterations in microbial functional and taxonomic profiles in the soil and plastisphere than PE-MPs. In comparison to their respective soils, the plastispheres of PE-MPs and BMPs stimulated the processes of N fixation, N degradation and assimilatory nitrate reduction (ANRA) and reduced the gene abundances encoding nitrification and denitrification, in which BMPs induced stronger influences than PE-MPs. Ramlibacter mainly drove the differences in N cycling processes between the soils containing two types of MPs and was further enriched in the BMP plastisphere. Three high-quality genomes were identified as Ramlibacter stains with higher abundances in the plastisphere of BMP than that of PE-MP. These Ramlibacter strains had the metabolic capacities of N fixation, N degradation, ANRA and ammonium transport, which were potentially attributed to their biosynthesis and the accumulation of soil NH 4 + -N. Taken together, our results highlight the genetic mechanisms of soil N bioavailability in the presence of biodegradable MPs, which have important implications for maintaining sustainable agriculture and controlling microplastic risk.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging contaminant that have attracted a growing concern about their behavior in soil environment in recent years. However, the research on the interaction between MPs and heavy metal pollution in the soil environment is still scarce. This study investigated the effects of high–density polyethylene (HDPE) and Cd on two soil types (phaeozem and fluvo–aquic soil), and explored their interaction mechanisms. The addition of HDPE significantly increased the content of available Cd in the phaeozem and enhanced the soil organic carbon (SOC) content and the abundance of microbial available carbon source. The presence of Cd reduced the content of SOC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in phaeozem and changed the soil bacteria community structure. The combined pollution of HDPE and Cd had a superimposed effect on the increment of DOC content in fluvo–aquic, and in phaeozem, the combined pollution had an antagonistic effect on SOC and DOC. In conclusion, the coexistence of MPs and Cd would affect soil carbon cycling and microbial community structure, especially in phaeozem. These results contribute to understanding the effects of MPs and/or Cd on soil biological properties.

Abstract:Small heat shock proteins are a ubiquitous and diverse family of stress proteins that have in common an α-crystallin domain. Mycobacterium tuberculosis has two small heat shock proteins, Acr1 (α-crystallin-related protein 1, or Hsp16.3/16-kDa antigen) and Acr2 (HrpA), both of which are highly expressed under different stress conditions. Small heat shock proteins form large oligomeric assemblies and are commonly polydisperse. Nanoelectrospray mass spectrometry showed that Acr2 formed a range of oligomers composed of dimers and tetramers, whereas Acr1 was a dodecamer. Electron microscopy of Acr2 showed a variety of particle sizes. Using three-dimensional analysis of negative stain electron microscope images, we have shown that Acr1 forms a tetrahedral assembly with 12 polypeptide chains. The atomic structure of a related α-crystallin domain dimer was docked into the density to build a molecular structure of the dodecameric Acr1 complex. Along with the differential regulation of these two proteins, the differences in their quaternary structures demonstrated here supports their distinct functional roles.

Abstract:The coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and toxic metal contaminants in soils is becoming increasingly common, thereby posing serious threat to soil–plant systems. Cadmium (Cd) is the most common metal contaminant in soil and can easily combine with MPs, thereby altering its bioavailability. However, few studies have focused on the co-pollution of MPs and Cd, particularly the complex phytotoxicity caused by their interaction and the effect of co-exposure on Cd uptake in plants. We conducted pot experiments to compare the effects of exposure to polystyrene (PS) and Cd, as well as the effects of co-exposure (PS + Cd), on the physiological characteristics of Brassica chinensis L. and explored the regulatory factors of MPs on Cd uptake in plant tissues. The results showed that plant biomass, photosynthetic parameters, and chlorophyll content significantly decreased (p < 0.05) with increasing PS doses under treatment with MPs alone. Although the negative effects of PS and Cd co-exposure on plants were higher than those of PS alone, however, the addition of MPs reduced the toxicity effects of Cd on plants and decreased the uptake and accumulation of Cd by plants compared with the Cd treatment alone. Furthermore, plants can resist the increased malondialdehyde content and oxidative stress induced by PS and Cd exposure by increasing the activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase. Under the PS + Cd treatment, linear models showed that soil organic carbon and sucrase activity were the key variables affecting Cd uptake by plant shoots and roots, respectively. The results of the partial least squares path modeling further showed that PS indirectly affected Cd uptake by B. chinensis by significantly affecting the physicochemical properties of soil, Cd concentration, and enzyme activity. Our results provide a new perspective and an important reference for further understanding the effects of MPs on the bioavailability and fate of heavy metals.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) and heavy metal pollution in soil are global issues. When MPs invade the soil, they combine with heavy metals and adversely affect soil organisms. Six common MPs—polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, and polytetrafluoroethylene—were selected for this study to examine the effects of various concentrations and MP types on the physicochemical properties, bacterial community, and soil metabolism of heavy metal-contaminated soil. MP enhanced predation and competition among heavy metal-contaminated soil bacteria. Heavy metal-MPs alter metabolites in lipid metabolism, other pathways, and the bacterial community. MP treatment promotes energy production and oxidative stress of soil bacteria to resist the toxicity of heavy metals and degrade MP pollution. In conclusion, MP treatment changed the metabolism of the microbiome in heavy metal-contaminated soil and increased the abundance of Proteobacteria that responded to MPs and heavy metal pollution by 11.54 % on average. This study explored bacteria for the ecological regeneration and provided ideas for MPs and heavy metal-contaminated soil remediation.

Abstract:<p>Microplastics (MPs, <5 mm in diameter) have been widely recognized as a critical environmental issue due to their extensive use and low degradation rate. Based on current evidence, our aim is to evaluate whether MPs represent an emerging threat to plant-soil health in agroecosystems. We assess the ecological risks to plant-microbe-soil interactions associated with MPs and discuss the consequences of MPs on soil carbon (C), nutrient cycling, as well as greenhouse gas emissions in agroecosystems. We also identify knowledge gaps and give suggestions for future research. We conclude that MPs can alter a range of key soil biogeochemical processes by changing its properties, forming specific microbial hotspots, resulting in multiple effects on microbial activities and functions. Mixed effects of MPs on plant growth and performance can be explained by the direct toxicity of MPs or the indirect alteration in soil physical structures and microbial communities (i.e. symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi). Because of the diverse nature of MPs found in soils, in terms of polymer type, shape and size, we also see differing effects on soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, nutrient cycling, and greenhouse gases production. Importantly, increased bioavailable C from the decomposition of biodegradable MPs, which enhances microbial and enzymatic activities, potentially accelerates SOM mineralization and increases nutrient competition between plant and microbes. Thus, biodegradable MPs appear to pose a greater risk to plant growth compared to petroleum-based MPs. Although MPs may confer some benefits in agroecosystems (e.g. enhanced soil structure, aeration), it is thought that these will be far outweighed by the potential disbenefits.</p>

Abstract:As an exogenous carbon input, microplastics (MPs), especially biodegradable MPs, may significantly disrupt soil microbial communities and soil element cycling (CNPS cycling), but few studies have focused on this. Here, we focused on assessing the effects of conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE), biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on rhizosphere microbial communities and CNPS cycling in a soil-soybean system. The results showed that PBAT-MPs and PLA-MPs were more detrimental to soybean growth than LDPE-MPs, resulting in a reduction in shoot nitrogen (14.05% and 11.84%) and shoot biomass (33.80% and 28.09%) at podding stage. In addition, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) increased by 20.91% and 66.59%, while nitrate nitrogen (NO– 3-N) significantly decreased by 56.91% and 69.65% in soils treated with PBAT-MPs and PLA-MPs, respectively. PBAT-MPs and PLA-MPs mainly enhanced copiotrophic bacteria (Proteobacteria) and suppressed oligotrophic bacteria (Verrucomicrobiota, Gemmatimonadota, etc.), increasing the abundance of CNPS cycling-related functional genes. LDPE-MPs tended to enrich oligotrophic bacteria (Verrucomicrobiota, etc.) and decrease the abundance of CNPS cycling-related functional genes. Correlation analysis revealed that MPs with different degradation properties selectively affected the composition and function of the bacterial community, resulting in changes in the availability of soil nutrients (especially NO– 3-N). Redundancy analysis further indicated that NO– 3-N was the primary constraining factor for soybean growth. This study provides a new perspective for revealing the underlying ecological effects of MPs on soil–plant systems.

Abstract:Despite plastics providing great benefits to our daily life, plastics accumulating in the environment, especially microplastics (MPs; defined as particles <5 mm), can lead to a range of problems and potential loss of ecosystem services. Current research has demonstrated the significant impact of MPs on aquatic systems, but little is known about their effects on the terrestrial environment, especially within agroecosystems. Hereby, we investigated the effect of MPs type and amount on plant growth, soil microorganisms, and photoassimilate carbon (C) allocation. MPs had a negative, dose-dependent impact on plant growth affecting both above- and below-ground productivity (−22.9% and −8.4%). MPs also influenced assimilated 14C allocation in soil (+70.6%) and CO2 emission (+43.9%). Although the activity of β-glucosidase was suppressed by MPs, other C- and N-cycling related enzyme activities were not be affected. The type and amount of MPs in soil greatly altered C flow through the plant-soil system, highlighting that MPs negatively affect a range of C-dependent soil functions. Moreover, MPs increased the soil microbial biomass (+43.6%; indicated by PLFAs), and changed the structure and metabolic status of the microbial community. The evidence presented here suggests that MPs can have a significant impact on key pools and fluxes within the terrestrial C cycle with the response being both dose-dependent and MPs specific. We conclude that MPs in soil are not benign and therefore every step should be made to minimise their entry into the soil ecosystem and potential to transfer into the food chain.

Abstract:Plant microbiota are an important factor impacting plant cadmium (Cd) uptake. However, little is known about how plant microbiota affects the Cd uptake by plants under the influence of microplastics (MPs) with different particle sizes. In this study, bacterial structure and assembly in the rhizosphere and endosphere in pakchoi were analyzed by amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA genes under the influence of different particle sizes of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) combined with Cd treatments. Results showed that there were no significant differences observed in the shoot endophytes among different treatments. However, compared to Cd treatment, larger-sized PS-MPs (2 and 20 μm) significantly increased community diversity and altered the structural composition of rhizosphere bacteria and root endophytes, while smaller-sized PS-MPs (0.2 μm) did not. Under the treatment of larger-sized PS-MPs, the niche breadth of rhizosphere bacteria and root endophytes were significantly increased. And larger-sized PS-MPs also maintained stability and complexity of bacterial co-occurrence networks, while smaller-sized PS-MPs reduced them. Furthermore, compared to Cd treatment, the addition of larger particle size PS-MPs decreased the proportion of homogeneous section, while increased the proportion of drift in root endophytic bacterial community assembly. The role of larger-sized MPs in the community assembly of rhizosphere bacteria was opposite. Using random forest and structural equation models, the study found that larger-sized PS-MPs can promote the colonization of specific bacterial taxa, such as Brevundimonas, AKAU4049, SWB02, Ellin6055, Porphyrobacter, Sphingorhabdus, Rhodobacter, Erythrobacter, Devosia and some other bacteria belonging to Alphaproteobacteria, in the rhizosphere and root endosphere. The colonization of these taxa can may induce the formation of biofilms in the roots, immobilize heavy metals through oxidation processes, and promote plant growth, thereby reducing Cd uptake by pakchoi. The findings of this study provide important insights into the microbial mechanisms underlying the influence of MPs with different particle sizes on plant Cd uptake.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) that enter the soil can alter the physicochemical and biochemical properties of soil and affect speciation of heavy metals (HMs), thereby perturbing the bioavailability of HMs. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are not understood. Therefore, we investigated the effects of MPs from poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)-based biodegradable mulch (BM) and polyethylene mulch (PM) in Cd- or As-contaminated soil on soil properties and speciation of HMs. MPs were characterised using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The addition of MPs reduced the bioavailability of HMs in soil and promoted the transformation of HMs into inert fractions. The mechanisms underlying the reduction of the bioavailability of HMs in soils could be as follows: (1) the entry of MPs into the soil changed its properties, which reduced the bioavailability of HMs; (2) FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and benzene ring present on the surface of aged MPs stabilized complexes (As(V)-O) with As(V) may have directly reduced the bioavailability of As(V) in soil; (3) aged BM exposed more amounts and types of reactive functional groups and was more effective in stabilising soil HMs than PM. Overall, this study provides new insights regarding the complexation mechanisms of soil HMs by MPs from different plastic mulch sources.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can co-occur widely with heavy metals in soil. This study intended to investigate the influences of the co -exposure of polyethylene MPs (0.5 %, w /w) and cadmium (Cd) in black soil on the Cd distribution, enzyme activities , and bacterial communities in both bulk soil and different sized soil aggregates (> 1, 0.50–1, 0.25–0.50, and 1 mm and < 0.25 mm soil aggregates and decreased its distributions in 0.50–1 mm and 0.25–0.50 mm soil aggregates. About 12.15 %–17.65 % and 9.03 %–11.13 % of Cd were distributed in the exchangeable and oxidizable forms in bulk soil and various sized soil aggregates after the addition of MPs which were higher than those in the only Cd-treated soil (11.17 %–14.72 % and 8.66 %–10.43 %, respectively), while opposite tendency was found for Cd in the reducible form. Urease and β-glucosidase activities in the Cd-treated soils were 1.14–1.18 and 1.07–1.31 times higher than those in the Cd-MPs treated soils. MPs disturbed soil bacterial community at phylum level and increased the bacteria richness in bulk soil. The levels of predicted functional genes which are linked to the biodegradation and metabolism of exogenous substances and soil C and N cycles were altered by the co-exposure of Cd and MPs. The findings of this study could help deepen our knowledge about the responses of soil properties, especially microbial community, to the co-occurrence of MPs and heavy metals in soil.

Abstract:The coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals in sediments has caused a potential threat to sediment biota. However, differences in the effects of MPs and heavy metals on microbes and plants in sediments under different sediment conditions remain unclear. Hence, we investigated the influence of polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on microbial community structure, Pb bioavailability, and wheatgrass traits under sequential incubation of sediments (i.e., flood, drainage, and planting stages). Results showed that the sediment enzyme activities presented a dose-dependent effect of MPs. Besides, 10 % PLA MPs significantly increased the F1 fractions in three stages by 11.13 %, 30.10 %, and 17.26 %, respectively, thus resulting in higher Pb mobility and biotoxicity. MPs altered sediment bacterial composition and structures, and bacterial community differences were evident in different incubation stages. Moreover, the co-exposure of PLA MPs and Pb significantly decreased the shoot length and total biomass of wheatgrass and correspondingly activated the antioxidant enzyme activity. Further correlation analysis demonstrated that community structure induced by MPs was mainly driven by sediment enzyme activity. This study contributes to elucidating the combined effects of MPs and heavy metals on sediment ecosystems under different sediment conditions.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals (HMs) in soil contamination are considered an emerging global problem that poses environmental and health risks. However, their interaction and potential biological effects remain unclear. Here, we reviewed the interaction of MPs with HMs in soil, including its mechanisms, influencing factors and biological effects. Specifically, the interactions between HMs and MPs mainly involve sorption and desorption. The type, aging, concentration, size of MPs, and the physicochemical properties of HMs and soil have significant impacts on the interaction. In particular, MP aging affects specific surface areas and functional groups. Due to the small size and resistance to decomposition characteristics of MPs, they are easily transported through the food chain and exhibit combined biological effects with HMs on soil organisms, thus accumulating in the human body. To comprehensively understand the effect of MPs and HMs in soil, we propose combining traditional experiments with emerging technologies and encouraging more coordinated efforts.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have garnered global attention as emerging contaminants due to their adaptability, durability, and robustness in various ecosystems. Still, studies concerning their combination with heavy metals (HMs), their interactions with soil biota, and how they affect soil physiochemical properties and terrestrial plant systems are limited. Our study was set to investigate the combined effect of HMs (cadmium, arsenic, copper, zinc and lead) contaminated soil of Tongling and different sizes (T1 = 106 μm, T2 = 50 μm, and T3 = 13 μm) of polystyrene microplastics on the soil physiochemical attributes, both bacterial and fungal diversity, compositions, AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi), plant pathogens in the soil, and their effect on Lactuca sativa by conducting a greenhouse experiment. According to our results, the combination of HMs and polystyrene microplastic (PS-MPs), especially the smaller PS-MPs (T3), was more lethal for the lettuce growth, microbes and soil. The toxicity of combined contaminants directly reduced the physio-biochemical attributes of lettuce, altered the lettuce’s antioxidant activity and soil health. T3 at the final point led to a significant increase in bacterial and fungal diversity. In contrast, overall bacterial diversity was higher in the rhizosphere, and fungal diversity was higher in the bulk soil. Moreover, the decrease in MPs size played an important role in decreasing AMF and increasing both bacterial and fungal pathogens, especially in the rhizosphere soil. Functional prediction was found to be significantly different in the control treatment, with larger MPs compared to smaller PS-MPs. Environmental factors also played an important role in the alteration of the microbial community. This study also demonstrated that the varied distribution of microbial populations could be an ecological indicator for tracking the environmental health of soil. Overall, our work showed that the combination of HMs and smaller sizes of MPs was more lethal for the soil biota and lettuce and also raised many questions for further studying the ecological risk of PS-MPs and HMs.
