Abstract:Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs) from plant biomass are of considerable interest, primarily due to their low density, biodegradability, mechanical strength, economic output, and renewability. Here, a new pretreatment method has been developed to produce CNWs based on supercritical CO2 and ethanol. The raw material was micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) and experimental factors were controlled to enhance the properties of CNWs produced using a ball-milling technique following supercritical CO2 pretreatment. Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were also prepared using a high-pressure Microfluidizer©. A comparative study was conducted of the properties of the raw materials, the CNWs and the CNFs. The solid yields of P-MFC after supercritical CO2 pretreatment gradually decreased, along with the temperature and the reaction time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the CNWs and CNFs show that the morphology of the CNWs was basically acicular, while that of the CNFs was mainly soft fibrous. Thermogravimetric analysis results suggest that the thermal stability of the CNWs was substantially higher than those of the CNFs and the raw material. XRD results indicate that the crystallinity showed an initial increasing trend and then declined with increasing temperature and reaction time, and the crystallinity value of CNWs was higher than that of CNFs. The smaller CNWs became rougher and had a larger surface area.

Abstract:Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has various unique qualities, including high mechanical strength, crystallinity, and high water‐holding capacity, which makes it appropriate for a wide range of industrial applications. But its lower yield coupled with its high production cost creates a barrier to its usage. In this study, we have demonstrated the better yield of BNC from an indigenous strain Komagataeibacter rhaeticus MCC‐0157 using a rotary disc bioreactor (RDB) having a wooden disc. The RDB was optimized based on the type of disc material, distance between the disc, and rotation speed to get the highest yield of 13.0 g/L dry material using Hestrin–Schramm (H–S) medium. Further, the bioreactor was compared for the BNC production using reported medium, which is used for static condition; the RDB showed up to fivefold increase in comparison with the static condition reported. Komagataeibacter rhaeticus MCC‐0157 was previously reported to be one of the highest BNC producing stains, with 8.37 g/L of dry yield in static condition in 15 days incubation. The designed RDB demonstrated 13.0 g/L dry yield of BNC in just 5 days. Other characteristics of BNC remain same as compared with static BNC production, although the difference in the crystallinity index was observed in RDB (84.44%) in comparison with static (89.74%). For the first time, wooden disc was used for rotary bioreactor approach, which demonstrated higher yield of BNC in lesser time and can be further used for sustainable production of BNC at the industrial level.

Abstract:Production of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is becoming increasingly popular owing to its environmentally friendly properties. Based on this benefit of BNC production, researchers have also begun to examine the capacity for cellulose production through microbial hosts. Indeed, several research groups have developed processes for BNC production, and many studies have been published to date, with the goal of developing methods for large-scale production. During BNC bioproduction, the culture medium represents approximately 30 % of the total cost. Therefore, one important and challenging aspect of the fermentation process is identification of a new cost-effective culture medium that can facilitate the production of high yields within short periods of time, thereby improving BNC production and permitting application of BNC in the biotechnological, medical, pharmaceutical, and food industries. In this review, we addressed different aspects of BNC production, including types of fermentation processes and culture media, with the aim of demonstrating the importance of these parameters.

On to the impact of low cost substrates for BNC production

Abstract:Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is an exopolysaccharide produced by certain acetic acid bacteria. It has high crystallinity, high mechanical strength, high purity and high water-holding capacity. These properties make it useful in making artificial skin (1), electronic paper, composite reinforcement, development of food and cosmetic applications (2). The cost of fermentation media is believed to contribute significantly to the operational costs, especially if synthetic commercial media are used. Hence, much research on BNC production using low-cost substrates has been done focusing on lowering the production costs (3). Also, to meet the requirement for industrial applications, effective large-scale BNC production systems need to be developed, which involves improving the fermentation conditions and identifying high yield BNCproducing strains (4). However, as with many fermentation systems, while promoting the recycling of low value-added products, the use of complex substrates may in fact represent a bottleneck in the BNC fermentation processes. Some of these substrates present, comparatively to synthetic nutrients, high chemical oxygen demand (COD), total and volatile solids (TS and VS), total nitrogen (TN), antimicrobial components (such as phenols) Consequently, these alternative substrates may place an economic problem either downhill, due to the need for wastewaters treatments and/or, uphill, due to the need of substrates pre-treatment. In this work, the optimization of alternative BNC culture medium (Molasses-Corn Steep Liquor, MOL-CSL), using Response surface methodology – central composite design was used to evaluate the effect of inexpensive and widely available nutrients sources, namely MOL, ethanol (EtOH), CSL and ammonium sulphate on BNC production yield under static culture by komagataeibacter xylinus BPR 2001. The optimized parameters for maximum BNC production were: % (m/v): MOL 5.38, CSL 1.91, ammonium sulphate 0.63, disodium phosphate 0.270, citric acid 0.115 and ethanol 1.38 % (v/v). The maximum BNC production yield were 7.5 ± 0.54 g/L versus 1.79 ± 0.04 g/L for MOL-CSL and synthetic medium (HS-EtOH) culture medium, respectively. The resulting wastewater from each culture medium was characterized regarding COD, TN, TS and VS, leading to the conclusion that the wastewaters generated using MOL-CSL are more heavily charged with organic matter, increasing the final costs of BNC production due to the higher costs associated to wastewater treatment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) was studied for wastewater treatment and biogas production from the wastewaters of the BNC fermentation and purification process. Finally, a preliminary Life Cycle Assessment of BNC production was performed and will be presented. Abstract:Bacterial cellulose has drawn the attention for its unique properties and applications including; medicine, pharmacy, food, agricultural, textile and electronics. The present study focused on the production of bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (BCNF) from black tea as cost effective alternative medium in addition to study the effect of gamma radiation on BCNF properties. A symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) were isolated from commercial Kombucha beverage and were identified as Acinetobacter lowffii and Candida krusei , respectively. The symbiotic culture was used for production of BCNF on Hestrin-Schramm (HS), black tea (BT) and modified BT media. BCNF was purified (0.5 N NaOH) and quantified by dry weight, yield and productivity determination. Characterization and effect of gamma radiation (5–25 kGy) on BCNF were studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The highest BCNF production was achieved using BT medium with 0.2% tea and 6.0% commercial sugar (with dry weight 4.77–4.61 g/l and productivity 68.14% and 65.85%, respectively). Supplementation of BT medium with 1% ethanol, 0.27% Na 2 HPO 4 and 0.5% yeast extract individually, enhanced the BCNF production (7.85, 6.84 and 5.73 g/l), respectively. FTIR spectrum of BCNF from sugared water (SW), HS and BT showed similar structure with high purity. As a conclusion, gamma irradiation has no effect on the BCNF structure while showed different effects on its crystallinity index and size with the different doses. The changes in CrI were ranged between (17 and 23.5%), while the crystallinity size (Cs) was affected by gamma irradiation in a positive relationship where the crystalline size was decreased (33%) by exposure to 5 kGy then increased by increasing the dose of radiation reaching 25.7% at 25 kGy. SEM graphs showed the morphology of microbial culture and its symbiotic relationship in addition to the ultrafine structure of non-irradiated and irradiated BCNF.

Abstract:Increasing attention is being paid to bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) because of its environment-friendly properties. Researchers investigated the role of microbial hosts in BNC production due to the benefits of cellulose produced by microbes. Several research groups have developed techniques to make BNC on a large scale with the goal of developing new methods. A 3D network of micro and nanofibrils in BNC synthesized from several bacterial strains makes these BNC useful for reinforcing nanostructured composites that have increased Young’s modulus, tensile strength, purity, crystallinity, and water holding capacity. To overcome the barriers associated with the industrial scale production of BNC, different production techniques will be used, including static culture, cell-free production, agitated/shaking culture, using a variety of receptors for fermentation, and low-cost substrates as carbon sources. By in-situ and ex-situ fermentation processes, metal/metal oxide nanoparticle composites are among the most widely used materials in diagnostic and regenerative medicine. The purpose of the review is to update the researchers regarding the lucid production process and versatile applications of bacterial nanocellulose in biomedical field. We shall mainly discuss about the different methods for bacterial cellulose production and some of its applications in this mini-review.

Abstract:The demand for bacterial nanocellulose is expected to rise in the coming years due to its wide usability in many applications. Hence, there is a continuing need to screen soil samples from various sources to isolate a strain with a high capacity for bacterial nanocellulose production. Bacillus sp. strain SEE-12, which was isolated from a soil sample collected from Barhiem, Menoufia governorate, Egypt, displayed high BNC production under submerged fermentation. Bacillus sp. strain SEE-12 was identified as Bacillus tequilensis strain SEE-12. In static cultures, BNC was obtained as a layer grown in the air liquid interface of the fermentation medium. The response surface methodology was used to optimise the process parameters. The highest BNC production (22.8 g/L) was obtained using 5 g/L peptone, 5 g/L yeast extract, 50%, v/v Cantaloupe juice, 5 g/L Na 2 HPO 4 , 1.5 g/L citric acid, pH 5, medium volume of 100 mL/250 mL conical flask, inoculum size 5%, v/v, temperature 37 °C and incubation time 6 days. The BNC was purified and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Abstract:Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a biodegradable polysaccharide with unique properties that make it an attractive material for various industrial applications. This study focuses on the strain Komagataeibacter medellinensis ID13488, a strain with the ability to produce high yields of BNC under acidic growth conditions and a promising candidate to use for industrial production of BNC. We conducted a comprehensive investigation into the effects of downstream treatments on the structural and mechanical characteristics of BNC. When compared to alkaline-treated BNC, autoclave-treated BNC exhibited around 78% superior flexibility in average, while it displayed nearly 40% lower stiffness on average. An SEM analysis revealed distinct surface characteristics, indicating differences in cellulose chain compaction. FTIR spectra demonstrated increased hydrogen bonding with prolonged interaction time with alkaline solutions. A thermal analysis showed enhanced thermal stability in alkaline-treated BNC, withstanding temperatures of nearly 300 °C before commencing degradation, compared to autoclaved BNC which starts degradation around 200 °C. These findings provide valuable insights for tailoring BNC properties for specific applications, particularly in industries requiring high purity and specific mechanical characteristics.

Abstract:Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a sustainable, renewable, and eco-friendly nanomaterial, which has gained great attentions in both academic and industrial fields. Two bacterial nanocellulose-producing strains (CVV and CVN) were isolated from apple vinegar sources, presenting high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (96%–98%) with Komagataeibacter species. The biofilm was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing the presence of rod-shaped bacteria intricately embedded in the polymeric matrix composed of nanofibers of bacterial nanocellulose. FTIR spectrum and XRD pattern additionally confirmed the characteristic chemical structure associated with this material. The yields and productivities achieved during 10 days of fermentation were compared with Komagataeibacter xylinus ATCC 53524, resulting in low levels of BNC production. However, a remarkable increase in the BNC yield was achieved for CVV (690% increase) and CVN (750% increase) strains at day 6 of the fermentation upon adding 22 mM citrate buffer into the medium. This effect is mainly attributed to the buffering capacity of the modified Yakamana medium, which allowed to maintain pH close to 4.0 until day 6, though in combination with additional factors including stimulation of the gluconeogenesis pathway and citrate assimilation as a carbon source. In addition, the productivities determined for both isolated strains (0.850 and 0.917 g L −1 d −1 ) compare favorably to previous works, supporting current efforts to improve fermentation performance in static cultures and the feasibility of scaling-up BNC production in these systems.

Assessment of Culture Systems to Produce Bacterial Cellulose with a Kombucha Consortium

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) is an emerging material for high-end applications due to its biocompatibility and physicochemical characteristics. However, the scale-up production of this material is still expensive, with the culture medium constituting one-third of the total cost. Herein, four different media (yeast nitrogen base, YNB; Murashige and Skoog, MSO; black tea; and NPK fertilizer solution) were compared while using sucrose as an additional carbon source. The yields of BC were best for YNB and fertilizer with 0.37 and 0.34 gBC/gC respectively. These two were then compared using glucose as a carbon source, with improvements in the production of 29% for the fertilizer, while only an 8% increase for YNB was seen; however, as the carbon concentration increased with a fixed N concentration, the yield was lower but the rate of production of BC increased. The obtained BC films were sanitized and showed low molecular weight and all the expected cellulose characteristic FT-IR bands while SEM showed nanofibers around 0.1 μm. Compared to traditional methods for lab-scale production, the use of the fertilizer and the consortium represent benefits compared to traditional lab-scale BC culture methods such as a competitive cost (two times lower) while posing resilience and tolerance to stress conditions given that it is produced by microbial communities and not with a single strain. Additionally, the low molecular weight of the films could be of interest for certain coating formulations.

Abstract:Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a unique natural nanomaterial that shares very few similarities with other natural or industrially produced nanomaterials. BNC can be produced by a variety of bacteria, as a survival aid in different ecological niches. BNC is traditionally produced by static or shaking culture methods, and the ‘mother vinegar’, or biofilm, is a typical example of this product after static vinegar fermentation. BNC has great potential in biomedicine, and recent studies have also demonstrated its use in the papermaking industry. It has nanoscale fiber size and large numbers of free hydroxyl groups, which ensure high inter-fiber hydrogen bonding. Thus, BNC has great potential as a reinforcing material, and is especially applicable for recycled paper and for paper made of nonwoody cellulose fiber. As well as enhancing the strength and durability of paper, modified BNC shows great potential for production of fire resistant and specialized papers. However, the biotechnological aspects of BNC need to be improved to minimize the cost of its production, and to thus make this process economically feasible.Graphic abstract

Abstract:This study explores the use of Komagataeibacter intermedius SB110, isolated from pineapple waste, for the efficient production of bacterial nanocellulose. A coconut water medium enriched with sucrose and pineapple peel extract increased BNC yield significantly, achieving 5.563 g/L over 14 days. The resulting BNC exhibited high crystallinity and uniform nanofiber size, demonstrating potential for cost‐effective and sustainable industrial applications. Agro‐industrial residues, such as surplus fruits and vegetables are increasingly recognized as valuable sources for isolating bacterial strains capable of efficiently producing bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). This study presents a novel approach to BNC production using Komagataeibacter intermedius SB 110 isolated from rotten pineapple, cultivated in a sustainable medium of coconut water enriched with 5% sucrose and 0.5% pineapple peel extract. By leveraging agricultural waste, this method accelerates BNC biosynthesis to less than 7 days and achieves a yield of 5.563 g/L over 14 days, a 1.58‐fold increase compared with traditional media. The BNCs were primarily composed of cellulose type I, with minor cellulose type II, ultrafine fiber sizes (58.3 to 84.98 nm) and a high crystallinity index (60.81% to 78.34%), indicating superior structural quality. This innovative process not only demonstrates the potential of using low‐cost, sustainable substrates for high‐yield BNC production but also significantly enhances both the efficiency and scalability of the production process, setting a new standard over existing methods.

Abstract:An economically and environmentally viable alternative for treating waste from iron ore production in Brazil is the use of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) as an adsorbent for the metals present in the waste composition, due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability properties. However, to reduce production costs, it is necessary to study alternative substrates, such as waste from the brewing industry, which are nutritionally rich and, therefore, excellent candidates for substrate for bacteria that produce bacterial nanocellulose. Therefore, the present work aims to statically produce BNC using waste from the brewing industry and use BNC as an adsorbent for treating waste from the mining industry. It was possible to obtain approximately 1532 mg of bacterial nanocellulose through the batch system using the hydrolyzate of residual brewing yeast at pH 7 and 5 days of incubation. When used as an adsorbent, the material obtained a maximum adsorption capacity for the metals Co (II), Ni (II), Cu (II) and Fe (III) of, respectively, 0.0739, 0.2504, 0.3945 and 0.02841 mg·g −1 . For the same metals, the removal rate of the synthetic solutions studied was, respectively, 62.56, 39.13, 61.64 and 24.42%. For the analysis of isotherms, the Freundlich model proved to be the most effective for describing the system. Regarding the adsorption kinetics, it was more effective in the Elovich model. This data shows that nanocellulose produced by bacteria and using agro-industrial subproducts becomes a good alternative for remediation processes in a sustainable way.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are crystalline domains isolated from cellulosic fibers. They have been utilized in a wide range of applications, such as reinforcing fillers, antibacterial agents and manufacturing of biosensors. Whitin this context, the aim of this work was to obtain and analyze CNCs extracted from bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) using two distinct methods combined with milling pre-treatment: an acidic hydrolysis using 64 % sulfuric acid and an enzymatic hydrolysis using a commercial cellulase enzyme mixture. The CNCs obtained from the enzymatic route (e-CNCs) were observed to be spherical nanoparticles with diameter of 56 ± 11 nm. In contrast, the CNCs from the acid hydrolysis (a-CNCs) appeared as needle-shaped nanoparticles with a high aspect ratio with lengths/widths of 158 ± 64 nm/11 ± 2 nm. The surface zeta potential (ZP) of the a-CNCs was −30,8 mV, whereas the e-CNCs has a potential of +2.70 ± 3.32 mV, indicating that a-CNCs consisted of negatively charged particles with higher stability in solution. Although the acidic route resulted in nanocrystals with a slightly higher crystallinity index compared to the enzymatic route, e-CNCs was found to be more thermally stable than BNC and a-CNCs. Here, we also confirmed the safety of a-CNCs and e-CNCs using L929 cell line. Lastly, this article describes two different CNCs synthesis approaches that leads to the formation of nanoparticles with different dimensions, morphology and unique physicochemical properties. Advances in the Production of Sustainable Bacterial Nanocellulose from Banana Leaves

Abstract:Interest in bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has grown due to its purity, mechanical properties, and biological compatibility. To address the need for alternative carbon sources in the industrial production of BNC, this study focuses on banana leaves, discarded during harvesting, as a valuable source. Banana midrib juice, rich in nutrients and reducing sugars, is identified as a potential carbon source. An optimal culture medium was designed using a simplex-centroid mixing design and evaluated in a 10 L bioreactor. Techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the structural, thermal, and morphological properties of BNC. Banana midrib juice exhibited specific properties, such as pH (5.64), reducing sugars (15.97 g/L), Trolox (45.07 μM), °Brix (4.00), and antioxidant activity (71% DPPH). The model achieved a 99.97% R-adjusted yield of 6.82 g BNC/L. Physicochemical analyses revealed distinctive attributes associated with BNC. This approach optimizes BNC production and emphasizes the banana midrib as a circular solution for BNC production, promoting sustainability in banana farming and contributing to the sustainable development goals.

Abstract:Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is an attractive green-synthesized biomaterial for biomedical applications and various other applications. However, effective engineering of BNC production has been limited by our poor knowledge of the related metabolic processes. In contrast to the traditional perception that genome critically determines biosynthesis behaviors, here we discover that the glucose metabolism could also drastically affect the BNC synthesis in Gluconacetobacter hansenii. The transcriptomic profiles of two model BNC-producing strains, G. hansenii ATCC 53582 and ATCC 23769, which have highly similar genomes but drastically different BNC yields, were compared. The results show that their BNC synthesis capacities were highly related to metabolic activities such as ATP synthesis, ion transport protein assembly, and carbohydrate metabolic processes, confirming an important role of metabolism-related transcriptomes in governing the BNC yield. Our findings provide insights into the microbial biosynthesis behaviors from a transcriptome perspective, potentially guiding cellular engineering for biomaterial synthesis.

Abstract:Cellulose is one of the most abundant renewable biopolymer in nature and is present as major constituent in both plant cell walls as well as synthesized by some microorganisms as extracellular products. In both the systems, cellulose self-assembles into a hierarchical ordered architecture to form micro to nano-fibrillated structures, on basis of which it is classified into various forms. Nanocellulose (NCs) exist as rod-shaped highly crystalline cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) to high aspect ratio cellulose nanofibers (CNF), micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) and bacterial cellulose (BC), depending upon the origin, structural and morphological properties. Moreover, NCs have been processed into diversified products ranging from composite films, coatings, hydrogels, aerogels, xerogels, organogels, rheological modifiers, optically active birefringent colored films using traditional-to-advanced manufacturing techniques. With such versatility in structure-property, NCs have profound application in areas of healthcare, packaging, cosmetics, energy, food, electronics, bioremediation, and biomedicine with promising commercial potential. Herein this review, we highlight the recent advancements in synthesis, fabrication, processing of NCs, with strategic chemical modification routes to tailor its properties for targeted biomedical applications. We also study the basic mechanism and models for biosynthesis of cellulose in both plant and microbial systems and understand the structural insights of NC polymorphism. The kinetics study for both enzymatic/chemical modifications of NCs and microbial growth behavior of BC under various reactor configurations are studied. The challenges associated with the commercial aspects as well as industrial scale production of pristine and functionalized NCs to meet the growing demands of market are discussed and prospective strategies to mitigate them are described. Finally, post chemical modification evaluation of biological and inherent properties of NC are important to determine their efficacy for development of various products and technologies directed for biomedical applications.

Abstract:This review discusses the recent advancements in cost-effective fermentation methods for producing bacterial nanocellulose (BC) from food and agro-industrial waste. Achieving economical cell culture media is crucial for large-scale BC production, requiring nutrient-rich media at low cost to maximize cellulose yield. Various pretreatment methods, including chemical, physical, and biological approaches, are stated to break down waste into accessible molecules for cellulose-producing bacteria. Additionally, strategies such as dynamic bioreactors and genetic engineering methods are investigated to enhance BC production. This review also focuses on the environmental impact assessment and updated application challenges of BC such as medical applications, energy storage/electronics, filtration membranes, and food packaging. By providing insights from the recent literature findings, this review highlights the innovative potential and challenges in economically and efficiently producing BC from waste streams.

Purification and Characterization of Bacterial Nanocellulose Produced by Gluconobacter 5AC Isolate from Apple Vinegar

Abstract:Specific microorganisms can produce bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), with acetic acid bacteria (AAB) being the most active producer. The family Acetobacteraceae includes the obligate aerobic, motile acetic acid bacteria. The BNC has attracted a lot of interest across a wide range of industries, including pharmaceuticals, due to its flexible characteristics, properties, and advantages. The present study was conducted to purify and characterize BNC produced from AAB isolated from apple vinegar. Bacterial nanocellulose was synthesized using a natural date palm liquid medium at pH 6 at 30°C for 8–10 days. The bacterial cellulose produced was then purified using a technique involving 0.1 M sodium hydroxide. To ascertain the surface morphology, size, and form of the BNC membrane, three techniques were used for characterization: X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results of the XRD analysis confirmed that the BNC particle size ranged between approximately 17.10 and 70.33 nm, while the AFM analysis revealed that the mean diameter of these nanofibers was 26.58 nm. The TEM images clearly showed that the diameters of the BNC fibers ranged between approximately 26-66 nm. The findings of this study reveal that the characterization of the purified BNC using the XRD, AFM, and TEM analyses showed the presence of fibers with varying nanoscale diameters.
Biosynthesis of Antibacterial Bacterial Cellulose In-Situ Using Yellow Wine Wastewater Through Co-Fermentation

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) is extensively used in many fields due to its excellent physical properties; however, its high production cost and low output remain a challenge. The production of conventional yellow wine typically results in the generation of a substantial quantity of rice soaking wastewater (RSW). In this study, BC producing strain was isolated and identified from Kombucha. BC was produced directly using unsterilized RSW as the medium. High-yield BC was obtained by co-fermentation of isolated Novacetimonas hansenii S-08 with natural fermentation flora from RSW. The culture conditions were optimized by combining RSW medium and seed liquid of HS medium at a ratio of 5:1, using unsterilized RSW as a medium containing 40 g/L fructose corn syrup and 2 % ethanol. The results of FTIR, XRD, TGA, SEM analysis, and mechanical properties showed that the physical properties of BC-RSW were comparable with ordinary BC. The BC-RSW had strong inhibitory effects on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In conclusion, the wastewater produced by yellow wine enterprises could be directly used as an alternative medium for the sustainable biosynthesis of antibacterial BC in situ.
