Abstract:We report an optical lattice clock with a total systematic uncertainty of $8.1 \times 10^{-19}$ in fractional frequency units, representing the lowest uncertainty of any clock to date. The clock relies on interrogating the ultra-narrow ${}^1S_0 \rightarrow {}^3P_0$ transition in a dilute ensemble of fermionic strontium atoms trapped in a vertically-oriented, shallow, one-dimensional optical lattice. Using imaging spectroscopy, we previously demonstrated record high atomic coherence time and measurement precision enabled by precise control of collisional shifts and the lattice light shift. In this work, we revise the black body radiation shift correction by evaluating the $5s4d$ $^3D_1$ lifetime, necessitating precise characterization and control of many body effects in the $5s4d$ $^3D_1$ decay. Lastly, we measure the second order Zeeman coefficient on the least magnetically sensitive clock transition. All other systematic effects have uncertainties below $1 \times 10^{-19}$.

Abstract:The pursuit of better atomic clocks has advanced many research areas, providing better quantum state control, new insights in quantum science, tighter limits on fundamental constant variation, and improved tests of relativity. The record for the best stability and accuracy is currently held by optical lattice clocks. This work takes an important step towards realizing the full potential of a many-particle clock with a state-of-the-art stable laser. Our 87Sr optical lattice clock now achieves fractional stability of 2.2e-16 at 1 s. With this improved stability, we perform a new accuracy evaluation of our clock, reducing many systematic uncertainties that limited our previous measurements, such as those in the lattice ac Stark shift, the atoms' thermal environment, and the atomic response to room-temperature BBR. Our combined measurements have reduced the total uncertainty of the JILA Sr clock to 2.1e-18 in fractional frequency units.

Single-Ion Atomic Clock with $3\times10^{-18}$ Systematic Uncertainty

Abstract:We experimentally investigate an optical frequency standard based on the $^2S_{1/2} (F=0)\to {}^2F_{7/2} (F=3)$ electric octupole (\textit{E}3) transition of a single trapped $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ion. For the spectroscopy of this strongly forbidden transition, we utilize a Ramsey-type excitation scheme that provides immunity to probe-induced frequency shifts. The cancellation of these shifts is controlled by interleaved single-pulse Rabi spectroscopy which reduces the related relative frequency uncertainty to $1.1\times 10^{-18}$. To determine the frequency shift due to thermal radiation emitted by the ion's environment, we measure the static scalar differential polarizability of the \textit{E}3 transition as $0.888(16)\times 10^{-40}$ J m$^2$/V$^2$ and a dynamic correction $\eta(300~\text{K})=-0.0015(7)$. This reduces the uncertainty due to thermal radiation to $1.8\times 10^{-18}$. The residual motion of the ion yields the largest contribution $(2.1\times 10^{-18})$ to the total systematic relative uncertainty of the clock of $3.2\times 10^{-18}$.

Abstract:We report the realization of the closed-loop operation of an optical lattice clock based on 87 Sr atoms. A cavity-stabilized 698 nm laser is used to probe the 1 S 0 → 3 P 0 clock transition of strontium atoms trapped in optical lattices. Therein, we obtain a Fourier-limited Rabi spectrum with 0.6 Hz linewidth. The two transitions from m F =±9/2 ground states are alternatively interrogated to realize the closed-loop operation of the clock, and the clock laser light is frequency-stabilized to the center of the two transitions. Based on the interleaved measurement, the frequency instability of a single optical clock is optimized for the Dick effect, which is demonstrated to be 4.5×10 -16 /√τ, with τ being the averaging time for measurement. Further, we build another similar setup of the strontium lattice clock, which is used for the asynchronous comparison between the two clocks, where the stability is measured as 2.1×10 -18 at 47000 s. Moreover, we carefully calibrate the systematic effects of the Sr1 optical clock, and the total uncertainty is evaluated as 4.4×10 -18 .

Abstract:We have measured the absolute frequency of the optical lattice clock based on $^{87}$Sr at PTB with an uncertainty of $3.9\times 10^{-16}$ using two caesium fountain clocks. This is close to the accuracy of today's best realizations of the SI second. The absolute frequency of the 5s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$-5s5p $^3$P$_0$ transition in $^{87}$Sr is 429,228,004,229,873.13(17) Hz. Our result is in excellent agreement with recent measurements performed in different laboratories worldwide. We improved the total systematic uncertainty of our Sr frequency standard by a factor of five and reach $3\times 10^{-17}$, opening new prospects for frequency ratio measurements between optical clocks for fundamental research, geodesy, or optical clock evaluation.

Abstract:Neutral quantum absorbers in optical lattices have emerged as a leading platform for achieving clocks with exquisite spectroscopic resolution. However, the studies of these clocks and their systematic shifts have so far been limited to atoms. Here, we extend this architecture to an ensemble of diatomic molecules and experimentally realize an accurate lattice clock based on pure molecular vibration. We evaluate the leading systematics, including the characterization of nonlinear trap-induced light shifts, achieving a total systematic uncertainty of $4.6\times10^{-14}$. The absolute frequency of the vibrational splitting is measured to be 31 825 183 207 592.8(5.1) Hz, enabling the dissociation energy of our molecule to be determined with record accuracy. Our results represent an important milestone in molecular spectroscopy and THz-frequency standards, and may be generalized to other neutral molecular species with applications for fundamental physics, including tests of molecular quantum electrodynamics and the search for new interactions.

Abstract:We have built an ytterbium optical lattice clock with improvements over our previous version. An in-vacuum blackbody radiation (BBR) shield is employed to provide a well characterized BBR environment. The effective temperature felt by the atoms can be determined at an accuracy level of 13 mK, leading to a total BBR frequency shift uncertainty of 9.5 x 10(-19). We have also built an ultra-stable optical cavity system to pre-stabilize the clock laser, achieving a flicker frequency instability of similar to 3 x 10(-16). Rabi spectroscopy of the lattice-trapped atoms can achieve sub-Hertz linewidth spectra. Two ytterbium clocks have been operated in an antisynchronized configuration, with real-time BBR-Stark-shift corrections applied to both of them. By comparing the two clocks, we demonstrate a single-clock instability of 5.4 x 10(-18) in 4500 s. This clock will be applied for frequency comparisons to other optical clocks of different atomic species in the future.

Abstract:The passage of time is tracked by counting oscillations of a frequency reference, such as Earth's revolutions or swings of a pendulum. By referencing atomic transitions, frequency (and thus time) can be measured more precisely than any other physical quantity, with the current generation of optical atomic clocks reporting fractional performance below the $10^{-17}$ level. However, the theory of relativity prescribes that the passage of time is not absolute, but impacted by an observer's reference frame. Consequently, clock measurements exhibit sensitivity to relative velocity, acceleration and gravity potential. Here we demonstrate optical clock measurements surpassing the present-day ability to account for the gravitational distortion of space-time across the surface of Earth. In two independent ytterbium optical lattice clocks, we demonstrate unprecedented levels in three fundamental benchmarks of clock performance. In units of the clock frequency, we report systematic uncertainty of $1.4 \times 10^{-18}$, measurement instability of $3.2 \times 10^{-19}$ and reproducibility characterised by ten blinded frequency comparisons, yielding a frequency difference of $[-7 \pm (5)_{stat} \pm (8)_{sys}] \times 10^{-19}$. While differential sensitivity to gravity could degrade the performance of these optical clocks as terrestrial standards of time, this same sensitivity can be used as an exquisite probe of geopotential. Near the surface of Earth, clock comparisons at the $1 \times 10^{-18}$ level provide 1 cm resolution along gravity, outperforming state-of-the-art geodetic techniques. These optical clocks can further be used to explore geophysical phenomena, detect gravitational waves, test general relativity and search for dark matter.

Abstract:Here we present a liquid nitrogen-cooled Ca^+ optical clock with an overall systematic uncertainty of 3*10^-18. In contrast with the room-temperature Ca^+ optical clock that we have reported previously, the temperature of the blackbody radiation (BBR) shield in vacuum has been reduced to 82(5) K using liquid nitrogen. An ion trap with a lower heating rate and improved cooling lasers were also introduced. This allows cooling the ion temperature to the Doppler cooling limit during the clock operation, and the systematic uncertainty due to the ion's secular (thermal) motion is reduced to < 1*10^-18. The uncertainty due to the probe laser light shift and the servo error are also reduced to < 1*10^-19 and 4*10^-19 with the hyper-Ramsey method and the higher-order servo algorithm, respectively. By comparing the output frequency of the cryogenic clock to that of a room-temperature clock, the differential BBR shift between the two was measured with a fractional statistical uncertainty of 7*10^-18. The differential BBR shift was used to calculate the static differential polarizability, and it was found in excellent agreement with our previous measurement with a different method. This work suggests that the BBR shift of optical clocks can be well suppressed in a liquid nitrogen environment. This is advantageous because conventional liquid-helium cryogenic systems for optical clocks are more expensive and complicated. Moreover, the proposed system can be used to suppress the BBR shift significantly in other types of optical clocks such as Yb^+, Sr^+, Yb, Sr, etc.

Abstract:We present a transportable optical clock (TOC) with $^{87}$Sr. Its complete characterization against a stationary lattice clock resulted in a systematic uncertainty of ${7.4 \times 10^{-17}}$ which is currently limited by the statistics of the determination of the residual lattice light shift. The measurements confirm that the systematic uncertainty is reduceable to below the design goal of $1 \times 10^{-17}$. The instability of our TOC is $1.3 \times 10^{-15}/\sqrt{(\tau/s)}$. Both, the systematic uncertainty and the instability are to our best knowledge currently the best achieved with any type of transportable clock. For autonomous operation the TOC is installed in an air-conditioned car-trailer. It is suitable for chronometric leveling with sub-meter resolution as well as intercontinental cross-linking of optical clocks, which is essential for a redefiniton of the SI second. In addition, the TOC will be used for high precision experiments for fundamental science that are commonly tied to precise frequency measurements and it is a first step to space borne optical clocks

Abstract:The Stark shift due to blackbody radiation (BBR) is the key factor limiting the performance of many atomic frequency standards, with the BBR environment inside the clock apparatus being difficult to characterize at a high level of precision. Here we demonstrate an in-vacuum radiation shield that furnishes a uniform, well-characterized BBR environment for the atoms in an ytterbium optical lattice clock. Operated at room temperature, this shield enables specification of the BBR environment to a corresponding fractional clock uncertainty contribution of $5.5 \times 10^{-19}$. Combined with uncertainty in the atomic response, the total uncertainty of the BBR Stark shift is now $1\times10^{-18}$. Further operation of the shield at elevated temperatures enables a direct measure of the BBR shift temperature dependence and demonstrates consistency between our evaluated BBR environment and the expected atomic response.

Abstract:A full evaluation of the uncertainty budget for the ytterbium ion optical clock at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) was performed on the electric octupole (E3) 2 S 1/2 → 2 F 7/2 transition. The total systematic frequency shift was measured with a fractional standard systematic uncertainty of 2.2 × 10 −18 . Furthermore, the absolute frequency of the E3 transition of the 171 Yb + ion was measured between 2019 and 2023 via a link to International Atomic Time (TAI) and against the local caesium fountain NPL-CsF2. The absolute frequencies were measured with fractional standard uncertainties between 3.7 × 10 −16 and 1.1 × 10 −15 , and all were in agreement with the 2021 BIPM recommended frequency.

Abstract:We present the compact long-term nearly continuous operation of a room-temperature Ca+ -optical-clock setup towards a transportable clock, achieving an overall systematic uncertainty of 4.8 × 10−18 and an uptime rate of 97.8% over an 8-day period. The active liquid-cooling scheme is adopted, combined with precise temperature measurement with 13 temperature sensors both inside and outside the vacuum chamber to ensure the accurate evaluation of the thermal environment for the optical clock. The environmental temperature uncertainty is evaluated as 293.31(0.4) K, corresponding to a blackbody-radiation frequency-shift uncertainty of 4.6 × 10−18 , which is reduced more than twice compared to our previous work. Through frequency comparison of the room-temperature Ca+ optical clock with a cryogenic Ca+ optical clock, the overall uncertainty of the clock comparison is 7.5 × 10−18 , including a statistical uncertainty of 4.9 × 10−18 and a systematic uncertainty of 5.7 × 10−18 . Abstract:The pursuit of ever more precise measures of time and frequency is likely to lead to the eventual redefinition of the second in terms of an optical atomic transition. To ensure continuity with the current definition, based on a microwave transition between hyperfine levels in ground-state $^{133}$Cs, it is necessary to measure the absolute frequency of candidate standards, which is done by comparing against a primary cesium reference. A key verification of this process can be achieved by performing a loop closure$-$comparing frequency ratios derived from absolute frequency measurements against ratios determined from direct optical comparisons. We measure the $^1$S$_0\!\rightarrow^3$P$_0$ transition of $^{171}$Yb by comparing the clock frequency to an international frequency standard with the aid of a maser ensemble serving as a flywheel oscillator. Our measurements consist of 79 separate runs spanning eight months, and we determine the absolute frequency to be 518 295 836 590 863.71(11) Hz, the uncertainty of which is equivalent to a fractional frequency of $2.1\times10^{-16}$. This absolute frequency measurement, the most accurate reported for any transition, allows us to close the Cs-Yb-Sr-Cs frequency measurement loop at an uncertainty of $<$3$\times10^{-16}$, limited by the current realization of the SI second. We use these measurements to tighten the constraints on variation of the electron-to-proton mass ratio, $\mu=m_e/m_p$. Incorporating our measurements with the entire record of Yb and Sr absolute frequency measurements, we infer a coupling coefficient to gravitational potential of $k_\mathrm{\mu}=(-1.9\pm 9.4)\times10^{-7}$ and a drift with respect to time of $\frac{\dot\mu}{\mu}=(5.3 \pm 6.5)\times10^{-17}/$yr.

Optical clocks have been the most accurate frequency standards for the better part of a decade, surpassing even the cesium microwave fountains upon which the SI second is based. Two classes of optical clocks have outperformed cesium: singleion clocks and optical lattice clocks. Historically ion clocks have always been more accurate, and the precision of ion clocks and lattice clocks has been comparable. For years it has been unclear if lattice clocks can overcome key systematics and become more accurate than ion clocks. In this presentation I report the first lattice clock that has surpassed ion clocks in both precision and accuracy. These measurements represent a tenfold improvement in precision and a factor of 20 improvement in accuracy over the previous best lattice clock results. This work paves the way for a better realization of SI units, the development of more sophisticated quantum sensors, and precision tests of the fundamental laws of nature. Precision Measurement and Frequency Metrology with Ultracold Atoms

Abstract:Precision measurement and frequency metrology have pushed many scientific and technological frontiers in the field of atomic, molecular and optical physics. In this article, we provide a brief review on the recent development of optical atomic clocks, with an emphasis placed on the important inter-dependence between measurement precision and systematic effects. After presenting a general discussion on the motivation and techniques behind the development of optical lattice clocks, where the use of many atoms greatly enhances the measurement precision, we present the JILA strontium optical lattice clock as the leading system of frequency metrology with the lowest total uncertainty, and we describe other related research activities. We discuss key ingredients that have enabled the optical lattice clocks with ultracold atoms to reach the 18th digit in both precision and accuracy. Furthermore, we discuss extending the power of precision clock spectroscopy to study quantum many-body physics and to provide control for atomic quantum materials. In addition, we explore future research directions that have the potential to achieve even greater precision.

Abstract:Optical clocks are not only powerful tools for prime fundamental research, but are also deemed for the re-definition of the SI base unit second as they now surpass the performance of caesium atomic clocks in both accuracy and stability by more than an order of magnitude. However, an important obstacle in this transition has so far been the limited reliability of the optical clocks that made a continuous realization of a timescale impractical. In this paper, we demonstrate how this situation can be resolved and that a timescale based on an optical clock can be established that is superior to one based on even the best caesium fountain clocks. The paper also gives further proof of the international consistency of strontium lattice clocks on the $10^{-16}$ accuracy level, which is another prerequisite for a change in the definition of the second.

Abstract:Molecular lattice clocks enable the search for new physics, such as fifth forces or temporal variations of fundamental constants, in a manner complementary to atomic clocks. Blackbody radiation (BBR) is a major contributor to the systematic error budget of conventional atomic clocks and is notoriously difficult to characterize and control. Here, we combine infrared Stark-shift spectroscopy in a molecular lattice clock and modern quantum chemistry methods to characterize the polarizabilities of the Sr$_2$ molecule from dc to infrared. Using this description, we determine the static and dynamic blackbody radiation shifts for all possible vibrational clock transitions to the $10^{-16}$ level. This constitutes an important step towards mHz-level molecular spectroscopy in Sr$_2$, and provides a framework for evaluating BBR shifts in other homonuclear molecules.
