Abstract:Removal of Cs isotopes, one of the heat generators present in used fuel/reprocessing waste, is one of the most challenging obstacles in the disposal of these materials. For this purpose, a new silica-calix[4]crown material, CBisC6@SiO2, has been prepared. The material was created coupling a symmetric calixcrown derivative CBisC6 into the pores and channels of the SiO2-P particles through vacuum hybridization and immobilization. SEM, Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA-DSC and XPS were used to characterize the structure of the final material. The adsorption of Cs and some representative metals onto CBisC6@SiO2 has been investigated in the range of 0.4 to 6.0 M HNO3. CBisC6@SiO2 showed strong adsorption ability and selectivity for Cs over all of others except for Rb in 3.0 M HNO3. The adsorption mechanism of Cs was verified using XRD and FT-IR spectra. The separation of Cs from other waste materials by CBisC6@SiO2 was performed through six adsorption-desorption cycles. The removal efficiency of Cs was 99.5%, while other fission products were weakly absorbed except for Rb with the removal efficiency of 85.3%. A nearly quantitative removal of Cs by CBisC6@SiO2 was achieved.

Abstract:To find an effective method in separation of Cs(I), an advanced macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition composite, (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P, was synthesized. It was done by impregnation and immobilization of 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14) and methyloctyl-2-di-methy-lbutanemide (MODB) into the pores of the SiO2-P particles. MODB was used to modify Calix[4]arene-R14. The adsorption of some typical fission products such as Mo(VI), Pd(II), La(III), Y(III), Ru(III), Rh(III), Cs(I), and Zr(IV) contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) onto (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P was investigated. It was performed by examining the effects of contact time, the concentration of HNO3 in the range of 0.3–7.0M, and operation temperature on the adsorption of the tested metals. (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P showed strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested metals. The separation of Cs(I) from a simulated HLW containing 5.0mM of the tested elements was performed by (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P packed column at 298K. Mo(VI), Pd(II), La(III), Y(III), Ru(III), Rh(III), and Zr(IV) showed no adsorption and were eluted into effluent along with 3.0M HNO3. Cs(I) adsorbed by (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P was effectively eluted with water and then separated from the others. The results demonstrated that in 3.0M HNO3, (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P is promising to apply in separation of Cs(I), one of the heat generators, from HLW in the SPEC (Strontium/Cesium Partitioning from HLW by Extraction Chromatography) process developed recently.

It was prepared by impregnation and the immobilization of the BiPCalix[4]C6 molecule into the pores of the macroporous SiO2-P particles. The adsorption of Cs(I) and some typical elements Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III), Mo(VI), La(III), and Y(III) onto the BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P material was investigated. The effects of the HNO3 concentration, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption of the tested metals were studied. It was found that at the optimum concentration of 3.0 M HNO3, BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P exhibited excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested elements, which showed weak or almost no adsorption except Rb(I). A pseudo-second-order model was found to be able to describe the adsorption kinetics of Cs(I). The chemical complexation of Cs(I) with BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P was considered to be the rate-controlling step. Meanwhile, the thermodynamic parameters of the Cs(I) adsorption, H, G, and S were determined. The adsorption of Cs(I) onto BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P was exothermic. It was demonstrated that in 3.0 M HNO3, the novel macroporous BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P material shows promise for the partitioning of Cs(I) from highly active liquid waste.

The sorption of some typical fission product (FP) elements Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), and La(III) towards Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P was investigated by examining the influence of contact time and the HNO3 concentration. It was found that with an increase in the HNO3 concentration from 1.0 M to 4.0, the sorption of Cs(I) towards Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P increased quickly and then decreased with further increase of HNO3 concentration to 5.0 M. At the optimum HNO3 concentration of 4.0 M HNO3, the Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P adsorbent exhibited excellent sorption ability and selectivity for Cs(I) over all of the tested elements, which showed very weak or almost no sorption except Rb(I). The chromatographic separation of Cs(I) from a simulated HLLW containing similar to 5 mM of the FP elements and 4.0 M HNO3 was performed by Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P packed column at 298 K. Na(I), K(I), Sr(II), and La(III) were found to elute facilely and flowed into the effluent along with 4.0 M HNO3. Cs(I) and Rb(I), adsorbed strongly onto Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P, were desorbed sufficiently by water. The leakage behavior of Calix[4]arene-R14 and TBP from Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P was also investigated.

Abstract:To separate Cs(I), a new silica-calix[4]biscrown hybrid material, 1,3-calix[4]arene-bis(naph-crown-6) (CalixBNaphC)@SiO2-P, was synthesized by impregnation in situ and immobilization of agent into the pores of the SiO2-P particles. The materials were characterized by SEM images, FT-IR spectra, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR The adsorption of Cs(I) and some typical metals onto CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P was investigated by examining the effect of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M. Enrichment and recovery of Cs(I) in batch experiments were performed by six adsorption and desorption cycles. The removal of Cs(I) was more than 99.1%. Based on the batch results, the chromatographic separation of Cs(I) from 3.0 M HNO3 was conducted by CalixBNaphC@SiO2-P packed column. The effective separation of Cs(I) was achieved utilizing 3.0 M HNO3 and water as eluents. Abstract:25,27-Bis(1-hexyloxy)-calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (HexylCalix[4]C6) was synthesized. A new macroporous silica-based composite material, HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2, was prepared through impregnation and immobilization of HexylCalix[4]C6 into the SiO2-P particles. The adsorption of 17 species of typical metals onto HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in the range of 0.3-5.0 M HNO3 was investigated. The material exhibited strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested metals except for Rb(I) and Pd(II). The optimum HNO3 concentration and the adsorption mechanism of Cs(I) onto the material were discussed. The solubility of HexylCalix[4]C6@SiO2 in aqueous phase was evaluated by total organic carbon (TOC). The technical feasibility of application of Hexyl Calix[4]C6@SiO2 in Cs(I) separation was confirmed.

Abstract:To partition effectively Cs(I) and Sr(II), two harmful heat emitting nuclides, from a highly active liquid waste by extraction chromatography, two kinds of macroporous silica-based polymeric materials, Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P and TODGA/SiO2-P, were synthesized. Two chelating agents, 1,3-[(2,4-diethyl-heptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14), an excellent supramolecular compound having molecular recognition ability for Cs(I), and N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA) were impregnated and immobilized into the pores of SiO2-P particles support by a vacuum sucking technique. The loading and elution of 11 typical simulated fission and non-fission products from 4.0M or 2.0M HNO3 were performed at 298K. It was found that in the first column packed with the Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P, all of the simulated elements were separated effectively into two groups: (1) Na(I), K(I), Sr(II), Fe(III), Ba(II), Ru(III), Pd(II), Zr(IV), and Mo(VI) (noted as Sr-group); (2) Cs(I)–Rb(I) (Cs-group) by eluting with 4.0M HNO3 and distilled water, respectively. The harmful element Cs(I) flowed into the second group along with Rb(I) because of their close sorption and elution properties towards Calix[4]arene-R14/SiO2-P, while Sr(II) showed no sorption and flowed into Sr-containing group. In the second column packed with TODGA/SiO2-P, the Sr-group was separated into (1) Ba(II), Ru(III), Na(I), K(I), Fe(III), and Mo(VI) (non-sorption group); (2) Sr(II); (3) Pd(II); and (4) Zr(IV) by eluting with 2.0M HNO3, 0.01M HNO3, 0.05M DTPA–pH 2.5, and 0.5M H2C2O4, respectively. Sr(II) adsorbed towards TODGA/SiO2-P flowed into the second group and showed the excellent separation efficiency from others. Based on the elution behavior of the tested elements, an advanced PREC (Partitioning and Recovery of two heat generators from an acidic HLW (high activity liquid waste) by Extraction Chromatography) process was proposed.
Synthesis of Two Novel Macroporous Silica-Based Impregnated Polymeric Composites and Their Application in Highly Active Liquid Waste Partitioning by Extraction Chromatography

Abstract:Two kinds of novel macroporous silica-based chelating polymeric adsorption materials, TODGA/SiO2-P and CMPO/SiO2-P, were synthesized by impregnating and immobilizing two chelating agents, N,N,N′,N′-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA) and octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphoshine oxide (CMPO), into the pores of SiO2-P particles. To separate minor actinides (MA(III)) such as Am(III) and Cm(III), the adsorption and elution of 13 typically simulated fission products from a 3M HNO3 were performed. It was found that in the first column packed with TODGA/SiO2-P, all of the simulated elements were separated effectively into four groups: (1) Cs(I), Mo(VI), and the most portion of Ru(III) (non-adsorption group), (2) Sr(II), small portion of Gd(III) and all of light REs(III) (MA–lRE–Sr group), (3) most of Gd(III) and all heavy RE(III) (hRE group), and (4) Zr(IV), Pd(II), and a little of Ru(III) (Zr–Pd group) by eluting with 3.0M HNO3, 1.0M HNO3, distilled water, and 0.5M H2C2O4, respectively, at 298K. MA(III) was predicted to flow into the second group along with Nd(III) because of their close adsorption-elution onto TODGA/SiO2-P. In the second column packed with CMPO/SiO2-P, MA–lRE–Sr group was separated into (1) Sr(II), (2) middle RE(III) such as Gd(III), Eu(III), Sm(III), and quite small portion of Nd(III) (MA–mRE), and (3) light RE(III) such as La(III), Ce(III), and most of Nd(III) by eluting with 3.0M HNO3 and 0.05M DTPA-pH 2.0, respectively, at 323K. MA(III) was believed to flow into MA–mRE group along with Gd(III) due to their similar adsorption properties towards CMPO/SiO2-P. Based on positions of MA(III) appeared in light and heavy RE(III), an improved MAREC process for MA(III) partitioning from HLW was proposed.
Synthesis and Characterization of a Cesium-Selective Macroporous Silica-Based Supramolecular Recognition Material with High Stability

Abstract:To design new and efficient supramolecular recognition material, a macroporous organic–inorganic bis(n-amyloxy)calix[4]arene-crown-6 (BnACalix[4]C6) material for separation of cesium from acidic solution was developed. The results of SEM, TG–DSC, FT-IR, 29Si NMR, and XRD characterizations indicated that BnACalix[4]C6 molecules were successfully impregnated into the pores of SiO2–P support. Cs(I) was shown to be both strongly and selectively adsorbed by this material at 3.0 M HNO3. The total organic carbon values showed that the leakage of BnACalix[4]C6 from BnACalix[4]C6/SiO2–P was below 0.1 %. Thus, BnACalix[4]C6/SiO2–P is a promising candidate for separation of Cs(I) from acidic HAW in SPEC process.
The adsorption of Cs+ from wastewater using lithium-modified montmorillonite caged in calcium alginate beads

Abstract:The increasing nuclear energy consumption has posed serious environmental concerns (e.g. nuclear leakage), and the removal of radionuclides such as cesium becomes an urgent issue to be solved currently. In this research, a novel non-toxic adsorbent lithium-modified montmorillonite clay encapsulated in calcium alginate microbeads (MCA/Li) was fabricated by using ion-exchange method and then used successfully in the remediation of cesium-contaminated wastewater. Analyses of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of adsorbent MCA/Li, such as internal crystal structure, constituent elements, and functional groups. The effects of concentration ratios (sodium alginate/montmorillonite), solution pH, contacting time and initial Cs+ concentration on the adsorption behavior were carefully investigated via batch adsorption experiments. The adsorbent MCA/Li exhibited higher selectivity and removal efficiency towards Cs+ with the maximum adsorption capacity of 100.25 mg/g. In the kinetics study, the pseudo-first-order fitted the cesium adsorption data of MCA/Li better than the pseudo-second-order. The adsorption mechanism studies revealed the process followed the Langmuir isotherm model, which suggested that Cs+ adsorption onto MCA/Li is a monolayer homogeneous adsorption process. The research findings indicated this novel adsorbent MCA/Li demonstrated great potential in radioactive wastewater treatment due to its convenience in synthesis, high adsorption capacity, and low cost.
Effective removal of cesium by ammonium molybdophosphate–polyethylene glycol magnetic nanoparticles

Abstract:This study synthesizes a new adsorbent composite for the removal of Cs ions from waste effluents. The adsorbent is composed of polyethylene glycol-decorated ammonium molybdophosphate magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (PEG–AMP MNs) and is prepared via coprecipitation by grafting ammonium phosphomolybdate onto the surface of Fe 3 O 4 and coprecipitation with polyethylene glycol. The physical and chemical structure of the PEG–AMP MNs was investigated using various spectroscopic and analytical techniques, revealing that Fe 3 O 4 was tightly bound to the AMP particles and that the composites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior. The Cs + adsorption behavior of the adsorbent was investigated in a wide range of pH values and temperatures, using multiple Cs + contact times and initial Cs + concentration, and with interference from additional ionic species. The adsorbent achieved 99.8% removal of Cs + in the solution pH range of 1–12 and maintained its stability after adsorption. Interfering ions had little effect on the amount of Cs + adsorbed. The experimental data were fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson and Sips isotherms pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The results showed that the adsorption data fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 53.89 mg g −1 and equilibrium reached within 20 min. Thermodynamic experiments showed the adsorption process to be inherently endothermic. The mechanism of Cs + adsorption by PEG–AMP MNs is proposed to primarily be a combination of weak electrostatic attraction and ion exchange between NH 4 + and Cs + . More importantly, the encapsulation of a magnetic carrier allows for the efficient separation and recovery of Cs + after adsorption.

Abstract:A novel polyacrylic acid–ammonium phosphomolybdate (PAA–AMP) adsorbent capable of highly selective adsorption of Cs + in robust acid solutions was developed. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, temperature, and competing ions on the Cs + removal performance were investigated. The adsorbent rapid (30 min) selective adsorption of Cs + in a wide pH (pH = 1–12) range, with little effect of competing ions on the adsorption, and a maximum adsorption capacity of 66.71 mg g −1 . The adsorption data fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, and adsorption mechanism is ion exchange between NH 4 + and Cs + .

The adsorption of cesium by sulfonic acid functionalized hollow mesoporous silica microspheres

Abstract:With the development of nuclear industry, radioactive elements such as 137Cs put a threat on the water environment. It is a challenging task to remove the Cs+ in the nuclear wastewater. In the current study, we prepared a new Cs+-adsorbing material by introducing sulfhydryl group onto the surface of hollow mesoporous silica microspheres, then oxidizing the sulfhydryl group to sulfonic acid group. The obtained HMSS-SO3H material had an excellent adsorption capacity for Cs+ in the aqueous solution, with an adsorption capacity of 51.53 mg g-1 in 30 min. Characterization approaches, such as FT-IR and EDS, were used to confirm the result of modification. Adsorption experiments were carried out under. The influence of various parameters on the adsorption process was investigated under the conditions of changing pH, temperature, and time. The effect of competitive ions was also explored. The results indicated that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model and the main adsorption mechanisms are electrostatic interaction and coordination. The material had a best adsorption performance at a neutral pH. The adsorption process could well-fit the Langmuir's model, with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 81.31 mg g-1. And the adsorption capacity was slightly affected by competing ions such as Mg2+ and Ca2+. The results indicate that the HMSS-SO3H prepared in this study is a promising adsorbent for Cs+, with the advantages of high adsorption capacity, fast adsorption rate and high selectivity.
Ammonium molybdophosphate functionalized copolymer micelles for efficient Cs+ adsorption

Abstract:The ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP) with excellent ability of separation and extraction for radioisotope 137Cs and Cs+ in saline has a high solubility in water, which avoids its adsorbent role to extract Cs+ from enhydrous solutions directly. In our paper, the copolymers as the carrier of AMP are prepared via RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) polymerization, and the AMP is covalently located in shell or core of self-assembled copolymer micelles for efficient Cs+ adsorption. The influence of the initial concentration of Cs+, the pH value and the dosage of adsorbents, and the adsorption performance of Cs+ is evaluated. The initial concentration of Cs+ has little effect on the adsorption effect, and the optimal pH of the solution is 7.0. The adsorption–desorption cycles indicate that the micelles have excellent stability and capability for regeneration. The adsorption process of Cs+ follows the quasi-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption equilibrium is reached within 3 h. And the equilibrium adsorption capacities are 8.49 mg/g (AMP in shell of micelle) and 9.34 mg/g (AMP in core of micelle), respectively. According to the Langmuir adsorption model, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cs+ on micelles is 71.79 mg/g and 164.20 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption process is single-layer adsorption. The principle of Cs+ selective adsorption is the Cs+ and NH4+ exchange reaction in the gaps of the AMP. The results show that micelle with AMP loaded in shell is considered to be the more suitable adsorbent for separating and extracting Cs+.

Abstract:<p>Ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP) exhibits high selectivity towards Cs but it cannot be directly applied in column packing, so it is necessary to prepare AMP–based adsorbents into an available form to improve its practicality. This work provided two AMP immobilized cellulose microspheres ( and MCC-g-AMP) as adsorbents for Cs removal by radiation grafting technique. MCC-g-AMP was prepared by radiation graft polymerization of GMA on microcrystalline cellulose microspheres (MCC) followed by reaction with AMP suspension, and was synthesized by radiation hybrid grafting of AMP and GMA onto MCC through one step. The different structures and morphologies of two adsorbents were characterized by FTIR and SEM. The adsorption properties of two adsorbents against Cs were investigated and compared in batch and column experiments under different conditions. Both adsorbents were better obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. MCC-g-AMP presented faster adsorption kinetic and more stable structure, whereas presented more facile synthesis and higher adsorption capacity. was pH independent in the range of pH 1–12 but MCC-g-AMP was sensitive to pH for Cs removal. The saturated column adsorption capacities of and MCC-g-AMP were 5.4 g-Cs/L-ad and 0.75 g-Cs/L-ad in column adsorption experiments at SV 10 h<sup>−1</sup>. Both adsorbents exhibited very high radiation stability and can maintain an adsorption capacity of >85% even after 1000 kGy γ-irradiation. On the basis, two AMP-loaded adsorbents possessed promising application in removal of Cs from actual contaminated groundwater. These findings provided two efficient adsorbents for treatment of Cs in radioactive waste disposal.</p>

Abstract:A novel porogen-added ammonium phosphomolybdate-polyacrylonitrile (AMP-PAN-N20) was prepared to remove Cs + from geothermal water. Compared with traditional AMP-PAN, porous AMP-PAN-N20 beads have a smaller particle size, larger adsorption capacity and faster adsorption rate. The adsorption batch experiments were carried out with the research objects' adsorbent contact time, dosage, pH value, initial Cs + concentration, temperature and competing ions. The results showed that AMP-PAN-N20 could effectively adsorb Cs + in a wide pH range and high concentration of competing ions. Remarkably, the adsorption performance hardly decreased after ten cycles of adsorption. In addition, the column adsorption tests were obtained using Cs-containing geothermal water. The results showed that the adsorption breakthrough time could be as long as 60 h (flow rate Q = 2 mL·min −1 , bed height H = 8 cm), and the maximum dynamic adsorption capacity was 25.62 mg·g −1 under the Thomas model. In addition, the AMP-PAN-N20 maintained good stability after a long time of adsorption.

Abstract:We developed anew method for the preparing of a potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (PCH)/SiO2 composite as a granulated inorganic adsorbent to remove Cs+ from the radioactive waste solution. The process comprised two steps: The first step was preparing nanoscaled PCH particles, and the second step was stabilizing the PCH particles into the in situ-generated porous silica with aqueous silica sol used as SiO2 source. Granulated composite particles with good rigidity could be successfully prepared with this method. At the same time, the PCH content in the composite could reach 70 wt%, which is one of the highest PCH loads that have been reported.The PCH particles and composite were analyzed with X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methods. It was indicated by the results that the PCH particles and porous silica were mixed with each other homogeneously in the composite. Adsorption behaviors of the composite upon Cs+ under competition of coexisting ions (H+, Na+, and K+) were studied in batch experiments to determine the distribution coefficient (K-d). The as-fabricated composite exhibited high Cs adsorbing capacity (0.335 meq Cs/g composite) and good Cs+ selectivity from the mixture of competing ions (H+, Na+, and K+). All these characteristics made it a promising material for treating radioactive wastewater.

Abstract:Silica-based ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP/SiO2) adsorbent can effectively remove 137Cs from simulated wastewater discharged during the Fukushima NPP-1 accident. A pressing/sintering method for the final disposal of the spent Cs adsorbent was described herein. Immobilization of Cs in the stable ceramic solid form of Cs4Al4Si20O48 was accomplished using natural mordenite. Different sintering temperatures and duration times exerted different effects on the final microstructures and the mechanical and loading abilities of the solidified products. At the sintering condition of 1 h duration time at 1,200 °C, the Cs immobilization ratio was almost 100%, and a relatively high hardness and elastic modulus of 3.50 and 35.38 GPa, respectively, were achieved. The formation of crystals as temperature increased corresponded to the micromechanical properties of the sintered product. Density functional theory calculations revealed that Cs4Al4Si20O48 is orthogonal with cubic unit cells, and Cs–O is more likely to form an ionic bond in the crystal. The dissolution of ceramic matrix was determined to be a temperature-dependent solidification mechanism that involves a corrosion medium. These findings provide a basic technological support for the stabilization of radioactive wastes.
