Abstract:The overall debt ratio of China’s economy has risen sharply in recent years, which implies greater financial risks. Therefore, deleveraging is imperative. Deleveraging policy will affect the corporate debt structure, reduce the proportion of corporate financial debt financing, and increase the proportion of corporate operating debt financing. The bank-enterprise relationship will also affect the corporate debt structure, but contrary to the deleveraging policy, it will increase the proportion of corporate financial debt financing and reduce the proportion of corporate operating debt financing. These characteristics incur important theoretical and policy questions: Would deleveraging and the bank-enterprise relationship conflict with each other on the corporate debt financing structure? What is the concrete manifestation of such conflict if it exists?Taking China’s A-share listed companies from 2003 to 2016 as samples, the study finds that: (1) Deleveraging will reduce the proportion of financial liabilities and increase the proportion of operating liabilities. (2) The bank-enterprise relationship will increase the proportion of financial liabilities and long-term liabilities, and reduce the proportion of operating liabilities and short-term liabilities. (3) During the deleveraging period, compared with enterprises without bank-enterprise relationship, the proportion of operating liabilities and short-term liabilities is lower for enterprises with bank-enterprise relationship; while during the period of credit easing, the bank-enterprise relationship has no significant influence on the corporate debt structure.This paper may have the following contributions: (1) It systematically investigates the differential impact of deleveraging and bank-enterprise relationship on corporate debt structure and examines the possible conflict between them. Deleveraging would increase the use of operating liabilities and reduce the proportion of financial liabilities; while the effect of bank-enterprise relationship on corporate debt structure is the opposite. It is helpful for us to have an insight into the impact of deleveraging and bank-enterprise relationship on corporate debt financing structure. (2) It identifies the macro-policy conditions under which the bank-enterprise relationship could work. It is true that the bank-enterprise relationship can bring financing facilities to enterprises, but such financing facilities only exist in the period of easy credit. During the deleveraging period, it cannot increase the total amount of corporate debt financing, which suggests that the bank-enterprise relationship has limitations, and enterprises need to keep sober all the time, not to rely too much on this relationship form. (3) It also has some enlightenment to the development of China’s financial market. From the perspective of debt structure, the proportion of operating liabilities far exceeds that of financial liabilities, and the proportion of short-term liabilities far exceeds that of long-term liabilities. Moreover, according to the historical statistical charts made in this paper, the above gap has an accelerating trend of expansion by years. This shows that China’s financial market fails to play an adequate financial function in serving the real economy, which leads to enterprises having to seek an expedient measure to occupy the operating liabilities for a long time. Therefore, financial regulators should consider how to solve the problems of structural debt financing for enterprises.
An Empirical Analysis of the Determinants of Household Debt in Korea

Abstract:South Korea's household debt is an important subject of research because it is constantly increasing in size and relatively large compared to other countries. In this study, the determinants of household debt are analyzed from the perspective of economic environment and policy factors. To this end, regression analysis was performed household debt and explanatory variable time series data from Q4 2007 to Q3 2022. The main results obtained from the empirical analysis are as follows. First, economic growth supports households' ability to afford debt. Second, the housing asset price factor contributed to the increase in household debt. Third, mortgage lending decreases when loan interest rates rise, but the effect of interest rate on aggregate credit is somewhat unclear. Fourth, the suppression and relaxation of housing lending through regulation has a significant impact on the size of mortgage lending. The results of this analysis suggest the following policy implications. First of all, in order to manage household debt, it is necessary to stabilize housing prices through housing loan policies. In addition, stable real economic management is required to support households' ability to afford debt. And managing household debt requires appropriate monetary policy and the operation of housing loan regulations.

Abstract:We examine how leverage affects corporate research and development (R&D) intensity, as well as examine the impact of R&D on firm value in South Korea, a country in which corporate-funded R&D intensity is one of the highest in the world. Among our main results, we find that growth opportunities have a positive effect on R&D intensity, while leverage has a negative effect on R&D intensity. When leverage is at an extremely high level, the relationship between growth opportunities and R&D intensity turns from positive to negative. Using instrumental variables, we find that R&D generates an increase in firm value.

Benefits and Costs of Corporate Debt Restructuring: An Estimation for Korea

Abstract:The paper offers a method to quantify benefits and costs of corporate debt restructuring, with an application to Korea. We suggest a “persistent ICR<1” criterion to capture firms that had ICR<1 for multiple consecutive years and thus will likely require restructuring. We assess the benefits of debt restructuring by estimating the effects of removing a firm’s debt overhang on its investment and hiring decisions. We refine the assumptions on the cost of debt restructuring based on the literature, and focus not only on creditor losses, but also on the employment impact of corporate restructuring. Benchmark results for Korea suggest 5.5-7.5 percent of GDP creditor losses and a 0.4-0.9 percent of the labor force employment impact from the debt restructuring. These are compensated by a permanent 0.4-0.9 percentage points increase in future GDP growth thanks to higher corporate investment and 0.05-0.1 percent of labor force higher hiring in the subsequent years. The key qualitative result is that corporate debt restructurings “pay off” in the medium term: their economic cost is recouped over about 10 years.
The Leveraging of Corporate America: A Long‐Run Perspective on Changes in Capital Structure

Abstract:In a study published recently in the Journal of Financial Economics , the authors of this article documented a substantial increase in the use of debt financing by U.S. companies over the past century. From 1920 until the mid‐1940s, the aggregate leverage of unregulated U.S. companies was low and stable, with the average debt‐to‐capital ratio staying within the narrow range of 10% to 15%. But during the next 25 years, the use of debt by U.S. companies more than doubled, rising to 35% of total capital. And since 1970, aggregate leverage has remained above 35%, peaking at 47% in 1992. Moreover, this pattern has been observed in companies of all sizes and operating in all unregulated sectors. Changes in the characteristics of U.S. public companies during this period provide little help in explaining the increase in corporate leverage. For example, the displacement of tangible by intangible assets in many sectors of the U.S. economy during the past 50 years would have led most economists to predict, holding all other things equal, a reduction rather than an increase in aggregate corporate leverage. Instead, according to the authors' findings, the main contributors to the increases in U.S. corporate leverage since the 1940s have been external changes, including increases in corporate income tax rates, the development of financial markets and intermediaries, and the reduction in government borrowing in the decades following World War II. The authors' analysis also identifies these last two changes—the development of financial markets, including the rise of institutional investors and shareholder activism, and the post‐War reduction in government debt—as having played the biggest roles in the leveraging of corporate America.

Abstract:The study examines the effect of low cash and debt (LCD) on corporate governance (CG) and whether country characteristics matter more for CG of LCD firms than other firms. The cash value approach can address this research question given the proven positive link between CG and cash value. A review of comprehensive firm-level data across 88 countries from 1996–2019 firmly reveals better CG for LCD firms than for other firms. Additionally, country characteristics prove to affect CG particularly for LCD firms. Specifically, CG of LCD firms advances when economic or financial development improves, financial system is market-based rather than bank-based, shareholder protection improves, or national governance strengthens. As for other firms, CG is less influenced by country characteristics. Overall, the study contributes to existing research by showing that LCD positively affects CG and LCD firms can better capitalize on favorable external environment to improve CG than other firms.

Abstract:The paper examines the impact of a firm’s financial leverage on its investment decisions in the period 2011–2019, which occurred between two financial crises (2008–2010 and 2020–2022) and was globally marked by low interest rates and high leverage. The study focuses on non-financial listed firms in world’s top 13 largest economies consisting of 11 OECD+ countries and two emerging nations. The analysis explores the relationship between firm leverage and investment decisions, considering the growth opportunities and corporate risks of the firms, as well as the type of economy they operate in. The findings indicate that, overall, there is a negative relationship between leverage and investment. In developed nations, such as the OECD+ countries, this negative effect is more pronounced for firms with limited growth opportunities. Contrary to the existing literature, emerging economies exhibit a positive relationship between firm leverage and investment. Specifically, in China and India, firms with low growth opportunities display a stronger positive correlation between leverage and investment. These results suggest that in developed countries, debt continues to have a disciplining effect on firm investment, even in a high liquidity environment. However, in high-growth emerging economies, both firm management and lending institutions show less concern regarding leverage. Lastly, the study finds that firm risk has an adverse impact on investment decisions. These empirical findings highlight the non-uniform nature of the relationship between firm leverage and investment, which depends on the type of economy and the growth opportunities of the firms. Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to study the leverage adjustment behavior of firms distinguished based on financial flexibility. Financial flexibility is one of the key strengths of the companies to borrow funds for long-term capital investment. The lack of extensive studies in this domain motivates the authors to delve into the significance of financial flexibility in making corporate capital structure decisions. Design/methodology/approach The data comprise a combination of firm-specific and macroeconomic variables for firms in eight manufacturing sectors from 2009 to 2020. The authors employ an advance estimator, dynamic panel fraction, on the partial adjustment model to investigate the diverse impact on capital structure's speed of adjustment (SoA) between the financially flexible and financially inflexible firms. Furthermore, the authors utilize the generalized method of moments and panel-corrected standard errors to establish the robustness. Findings The empirical analysis reveals that the SoA of financially flexible firms lies between 19.75% and 35.38% and the SoA of financially inflexible firms lies between 11.66% and 25.81%. Due to their conserved debt capabilities, financially flexible firms can rely on leverage to stay near the target whenever they move away from it. Furthermore, financially inflexible firms exhibit a low adjustment speed due to their incompetence to borrow funds to benefit from new growth opportunities. The existence of a target ratio among the studied firms is identified from the positive coefficient of lagged dependent variable, and the relevance of trade-off theory is proved by the quick adjustment speeds in most sectors. Originality/value The sectoral distinction in the backdrop of the financial flexibility component adds to the research novelty and managerial implications.
Which Corporate Social Responsibility Performance Affects the Cost of Equity? Evidence from Korea

Abstract:This study analyzes the effect of corporate social responsibility activities on the cost of equity in Korea. We find that firms with better corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance generally exhibit cheaper equity financing. Considering three dimensions of CSR separately, we find that a higher “socially responsible management” significantly reduces the cost of equity by 1.13%-1.37% per annum and “Corporate governance” activity also marginally affects the cost of equity, while “environmental management” has no impact. Our result is robust in controlling for systematic risk, size, leverage ratio, and the number of analysts. These results imply that enhancing socially responsible management and corporate governance can increase firm value in Korea, but environmental management is not relevant for firm values. Putting differently, investors tolerate a lower return from firms with more CSR activities, because they expect them to provide sustainable incomes. Future researches can extend our approach to examining the effect on the cost of debt and cost of capital.

The Long-Term Use of Short-Term Debt Around the World

Abstract:We propose novel proxies to identify firms that use short-term debt to fund long-term investment (SDLI). Using an international sample across 46 countries over the 1990-2015 period, we show that our SDLI proxies are negatively related to debt maturity, and positively related to the sensitivity of investment to short-term debt. Firms use more SDLI in less financially developed countries and during periods of financial crisis. Tests of our hypotheses show that the use of SDLI is mainly driven by the market timing hypothesis rather than the information asymmetry and agency conflict hypotheses. The use of SDLI is negatively associated with the cost of debt but positively associated with the cost of equity and financial risk. The rationale that firms use SDLI to mitigate their short-term financing costs may lead to overinvestment and ultimately impair the firms’ long-term operational performance. Our findings highlight the importance of conducting maturity matching between corporate debt and investments.

Abstract:Corporate excess savings, or gross savings in excess of fixed capital formation, can affect the real economy through the financial decisions of individual firms. Based on an unbalanced panel of more than 2,000 Korean listed companies from 2003 to 2021, this study analyses how excess savings are used in individual firms' financial activities and their consequent impact on aggregate demand at the macroeconomic level. Excess savings are most often used for debt repayment. Considering heterogeneity, the excess savings of large firms are mainly related to M&A, while the excess savings of small firms are relatively more disbursed to cash holdings for the precautionary motive. Since 2010, the extent of its use in M&A has become stronger; M&A in large firms appears to crowd out fixed capital formation for a certain period of time. When this analysis is applied at the industry level, it is also consistent with the results of individual firms.

Abstract:This article investigates whether a deleveraging policy influences the risk of corporate debt default. We provide evidence that the deleveraging policy can increase the risk of corporate debt default by reducing the supply of credit funds and increasing the cost of debt financing, and the conclusions remain robust after controlling for endogeneity problems. Furthermore, we find that the impact of the deleveraging policy on corporate debt default risk is more significant for enterprises with poor operating performance, nonstate-ownership, backward capacity, and developed shadow banking areas. Those findings provide a theoretical basis for the macrodecision transition from deleveraging to stabilizing leverage.

Abstract:China is now facing the challenges of high leverage. Our study has examined the role of firms' rising debt in explaining the decrease in labor share in recent years. We developed a model to show that firms may strategically use debt to increase their bargaining power, resulting in lower labor share. Empirical evidence shows the labor share is robustly negatively related to debt per worker, and the negative correlation varies across ownership, labor union and maturity of debt. The findings imply that the de-leveraging policy may help alleviate the worsening income inequality.

Abstract:This study examines the association between the effective corporate tax rate and the volatility of future effective corporate tax rates in Korean companies. We analyzed the effect of corporate governance on the association between tax avoidance and tax risk. Our sample is comprised of all the firms listed on the Korea Composite Stock Price Index market. We measure each firm’s tax avoidance as GAAP ETR, Cash ETR, and BTD, and use the corporate governance rating of the Korea Corporate Governance Service to measure corporate governance. Our results show that the volatility of the effective corporate tax rate and the effective corporate tax rate would have a significant negative association. Our results show that tax risk decreases when the corporate tax avoidance level increases and the tax risk increases when the corporate tax avoidance level decreases. In addition, we find that the better the corporate governance structure, the higher the level of supervision and control of managers, thereby mitigating the impact of tax evasion on future corporate tax risk. The findings of this study regarding tax avoidance and corporate governance are important for investors because tax risk can significantly affect investor welfare.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: This study analyzes the influence of the financial structure of pharmaceutical companies on R&D investment to create a next-generation profit source or develop relatively cost-effective drugs to maximize enterprise value.METHODS: The period of the empirical analysis is from 2000 to 2012. Financial statements and comments in general and internal transactions were extracted from TS-2000 of the Korea Listed Company Association (KLCA), and data related to stock price is extracted from KISVALUE-Ⅲ of NICE Information Service Co., Ltd. Stata 12.0 was used as the statistical package for panel analysis.RESULTS: The current ratio had a positive influence on R&D investment, the debt ratio had a negative influence on R&D investment, and return on investment and net sales growth rate did not have a significant influence on R&D investment.CONCLUSION: It was found in this study that the higher liquidity ratio, the greater the R&D investment. The stability of pharmaceutical companies has a negative influence on R&D investment. This finding is consistent with the prediction that if a company faces a financial risk, it will be passive in R&D investment due to its financial difficulties.
Does debt affect firm value in Taiwan? A panel threshold regression analysis

Abstract:This article analyses whether leverage affects firm value and does so using a panel of 196 Taiwanese listed companies during the 13-year (1993–2005) period. We employ an advanced panel threshold regression model to test whether there is a ‘threshold’ debt ratio which causes there to be asymmetrical relationships between debt ratio and firm value. We adopt Tobin's Q as proxy for firm value. We find that there are two threshold effects between debt ratio and firm value, and these are 9.86% and 33.33%. When the debt ratio is less than 9.86%, Tobin's Q (i.e. firm value) increases by 0.0546%, with an increase of 1% in the debt ratio. When the debt ratio is between 9.86% and 33.33%, we find Tobin's Q increases by only 0.0057%, with an increase of 1% in the debt ratio. But when the debt ratio is greater than 33.33%, there is no relationship between debt ratio and firm value. We therefore conclude that there must be a threshold debt ratio of less than 33.33% at which point firm value stops increasing. These results are consistent with the trade-off theory, which suggests that there is a static amount of debt which prompts managers to find the ‘optimal capital structure’ that maximizes firm value when the benefits of debt equal the marginal cost of debt.

Abstract:This paper analyzes various data, especially that of 4 million Chinese manufacturing company samples during the period of 1998 to 2013, to present detailed evidence regarding two questions of China's leverage issue. First, where is the leverage? We find that within the 16-year period, most sample firms have been significantly deleveraged, with the average leverage ratio declining from 65 percent in 1998 to 51 percent in 2013. In contrast, only several thousand companies have significantly leveraged, mostly large-scale, state-owned, listed firms. Second, has the change of leverage been supported by the firms’ fundamentals? We find that for private firms, changes of firm characteristics are consistent with their leverage changes, whereas firm-level factors can hardly explain the leverage of state-owned enterprises. We provide further evidence from aggregate-level data, which suggest that the huge amount of credit being allocated to the state sector is the reason for the declining credit efficiency in China.

Abstract:This study analyzes how the trade-off theory, capital financing priority theory, and market timing hypothesis impact corporate capital structure for sustainable growth. Using a panel regression and system generalized method for moment analyses with balanced panel data for 1636 listed firms in the Korean stock market and KOSDAQ from 2011 to 2021, we discovered that the level of and change in capital structure are determined through a complex mechanism in which the target debt ratio adjustment speed, previous year's debt ratio, target debt ratio divergence, funding shortage situation, and market timing hypothesis interact complementarily. This indicates that the capital structure decisions of Korean listed firms are characterized by a complex mechanism that is difficult to explain with a single theory. The findings of this study have practical implications for understanding the capital structure decisions of Korean firms and for designing efficient capital-raising strategies. Additionally, by revealing the complementary relationship between the two theories, this study provides directions for future research on corporate capital structure.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between debt level and performance among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach – Unlike the vast majority of previous research, this study uses three-stage least squares (3SLS) and fixed-effects models to analyse a comprehensive, cross-sectoral sample of 15,897 Swedish SMEs operating in five industry sectors during the 2009-2012 period. Findings – This study confirms that debt ratios, in terms of trade credit, short-term debt and long-term debt, negatively affect firm performance in terms of profitability. As a high debt ratio seems to increase the agency costs and the risk of losing control of the firm, SME owners and managers tend to finance their businesses with equity capital to a fairly high degree. Practical implications – As debt policy significantly influences firm performance, and thereby firm value and survival, SME owners and managers should focus on finding a satisfactory debt level. Originality/value – To the authors’ best knowledge, this study is among the first to use 3SLS and fixed-effects models to analyse the relationship between debt level and firm performance. Moreover, while most previous research has examined listed firms, this study highlights the issue among SMEs, which play a fundamental role in the economy.
