Abstract:Recently, there has been a growing interest in deploying smart materials as sensing components of structural health monitoring systems. In this arena, piezoelectric materials offer great promise for researchers to rapidly expand their many potential applications. The main goal of this study is to review the state-of-the-art piezoelectric-based sensing techniques that are currently used in the structural health monitoring area. These techniques range from piezoelectric electromechanical impedance and ultrasonic Lamb wave methods to a class of cutting-edge self-powered sensing systems. We present the principle of the piezoelectric effect and the underlying mechanisms used by the piezoelectric sensing methods to detect the structural response. Furthermore, the pros and cons of the current methodologies are discussed. In the end, we envision a role of the piezoelectric-based techniques in developing the next-generation self-monitoring and self-powering health monitoring systems.
Ferroelectric Thin-Film Active Sensors for Structural Health Monitoring

Abstract:Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) have been proven a valuable tool in structural health monitoring. Piezoelectric wafer active sensors are able to send and receive guided Lamb/Rayleigh waves that scan the structure and detect the presence of incipient cracks and structural damage. In-situ thin-film active sensor deposition can eliminate the bonding layer to improve the durability issue and reduce the acoustic impedance mismatch. Ferroelectric thin films have been shown to have piezoelectric properties that are close to those of single-crystal ferroelectrics but the fabrication of ferroelectric thin films on structural materials (steel, aluminum, titanium, etc.) has not been yet attempted. In this work, in-situ fabrication method of piezoelectric thin-film active sensors arrays was developed using the nano technology approach. Specification for the piezoelectric thin-film active sensors arrays was based on electro-mechanical-acoustical model. Ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) thin films were successfully deposited on Ni tapes by pulsed laser deposition under the optimal synthesis conditions. Microstructural studies by X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the as-grown BTO thin films have the nanopillar structures with an average size of approximately 80 nm in diameter and the good interface structures with no inter-diffusion or reaction. The dielectric and ferroelectric property measurements exhibit that the BTO films have a relatively large dielectric constant, a small dielectric loss, and an extremely large piezoelectric response with a symmetric hysteresis loop. The research objective is to develop the fabrication and optimum design of thin-film active sensor arrays for structural health monitoring applications. The short wavelengths of the micro phased arrays will permit the phased-array imaging of smaller parts and smaller damage than is currently not possible with existing technology.
Active Ultrasonic Structural Health Monitoring Enabled by Piezoelectric Direct-Write Transducers and Edge Computing Process

Abstract:While the active ultrasonic method is an attractive structural health monitoring (SHM) technology, many practical issues such as weight of transducers and cables, energy consumption, reliability and cost of implementation are restraining its application. To overcome these challenges, an active ultrasonic SHM technology enabled by a direct-write transducer (DWT) array and edge computing process is proposed in this work. The operation feasibility of the monitoring function is demonstrated with Lamb wave excited and detected by a linear DWT array fabricated in situ from piezoelectric P(VDF-TrFE) polymer coating on an aluminum alloy plate with a simulated defect. The DWT array features lightweight, small profile, high conformability, and implementation scalability, whilst the edge-computing circuit dedicatedly designed for the active ultrasonic SHM is able to perform signal processing at the sensor nodes before wirelessly transmitting the data to a remote host device. The successful implementation of edge-computing processes is able to greatly decrease the amount of data to be transferred by 331 times and decrease the total energy consumption for the wireless module by 224 times. The results and analyses show that the combination of the piezoelectric DWT and edge-computing process provides a promising technical solution for realizing practical wireless active ultrasonic SHM system.

Abstract:In this paper, some recent piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) progress achieved in our laboratory for active materials and smart structures (LAMSS) at the University of South Carolina: http: //www.me.sc.edu/research/lamss/ group is presented. First, the characterization of the PWAS materials shows that no significant change in the microstructure after exposure to high temperature and nuclear radiation, and the PWAS transducer can be used in harsh environments for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. Next, PWAS active sensing of various damage types in aluminum and composite structures are explored. PWAS transducers can successfully detect the simulated crack and corrosion damage in aluminum plates through the wavefield analysis, and the simulated delamination damage in composite plates through the damage imaging method. Finally, the novel use of PWAS transducers as acoustic emission (AE) sensors for in situ AE detection during fatigue crack growth is presented. The time of arrival of AE signals at multiple PWAS transducers confirms that the AE signals are originating from the crack, and that the amplitude decay due to geometric spreading is observed.

Abstract:A novel nanocomposite-inspired in-situ broadband ultrasonic sensor previously developed, with carbon black as the nanofiller and polyvinylidene fluoride as the matrix, was networked for acousto-ultrasonic wave-based passive and active structural health monitoring (SHM). Being lightweight and small, this kind of sensor was proven to be capable of perceiving strain perturbation in virtue of the tunneling effect in the formed nanofiller conductive network when acousto-ultrasonic waves traverse the sensor. Proof-of-concept validation was implemented, to examine the sensor performance in responding to acousto-ultrasonic waves in a broad frequency regime: from acoustic emission (AE) of lower frequencies to guided ultrasonic waves (GUWs) of higher frequencies. Results have demonstrated the high fidelity, ultrafast response and high sensitivity of the sensor to acousto-ultrasonic waves up to 400kHz yet with an ultra-low magnitude (of the order of micro-strain). The sensor is proven to possess sensitivity and accuracy comparable with commercial piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers, whereas with greater flexibility in accommodating curved structural surfaces. Application paradigms of using the sensor for damage evaluation have spotlighted the capability of the sensor in compromising "sensing cost" with "sensing effectiveness" for passive AE- or active GUW-based SHM.

Abstract:Vibration and deformation measurement are of great significance for structural health monitoring (SHM). While the existing accelerometer, laser and vision-based approaches have limitations in multi-point vibration measurement, efficiency and environmental adaptability, especially for large structures. In this paper, we present a method for structural health monitoring with multi-point vibration and deformation measurement via millimetre- wave sensing. First, we describe the mathematical model and the principle of multi-target synchronous vibration and deformation monitoring. Second, with a built prototype of mmWave sensing system, we evaluate our method with both laboratory and field tests. The experimental results of different amplitudes, frequencies and velocities show that our approach can accurately monitor the vibration and deformation of multi-point with μm-level accuracy. The field test of Shanghai Songpu Bridge is provided to further validate the effectiveness of the method, offering a novel approach for contactless vibration and deformation monitoring of large structures in SHM.

Abstract:The development of structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques is of great importance to improve the structural efficiency and safety. With advantages of long propagation distances, high damage sensitivity, and economic feasibility, guided-ultrasonic-wave-based SHM is recognized as one of the most promising technologies for large-scale engineering structures. However, the propagation characteristics of guided ultrasonic waves in in-service engineering structures are highly complex, which results in difficulties in developing precise and efficient signal feature mining methods. The damage identification efficiency and reliability of existing guided ultrasonic wave methods cannot meet engineering requirements. With the development of machine learning (ML), numerous researchers have proposed improved ML methods that can be incorporated into guided ultrasonic wave diagnostic techniques for SHM of actual engineering structures. To highlight their contributions, this paper provides a state-of-the-art overview of the guided-wave-based SHM techniques enabled by ML methods. Accordingly, multiple stages required for ML-based guided ultrasonic wave techniques are discussed, including guided ultrasonic wave propagation modeling, guided ultrasonic wave data acquisition, wave signal pre-processing, guided wave data-based ML modeling, and physics-based ML modeling. By placing ML methods in the context of the guided-wave-based SHM for actual engineering structures, this paper also provides insights into future prospects and research strategies.

Abstract:Guided-wave-and impedance-based structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques have gained much attention due to their high sensitivity to small defects. One of the popular devices commonly used for guided wave and impedance measurements is a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducer. This study proposes a new wireless scheme where the power and data required for PZT excitation and sensing are transmitted via laser. First, a modulated laser beam is wirelessly transmitted to the photodiode connected to a PZT on a structure. Then, the photodiode converts the laser light into an electric signal, and it is applied to the PZT for excitation. The corresponding responses, impedance at the same PZT or guided waves at another PZT, are measured, re-converted into laser light, and wirelessly transmitted back to the other photodiode located in the data interrogator for signal processing. The feasibility of the proposed wireless guided wave and impedance measurement schemes has been examined through circuit analyses and experimentally investigated in a laboratory setup.

Abstract:There are on-going efforts to utilize guided waves for structural damage detection. Active sensing devices such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT) have been widely used for guided wave generation and sensing. In addition, there has been increasing interest in adopting wireless sensing to structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. One of major challenges in wireless SHM is to secure power necessary to operate the wireless sensors. However, because active sensing devices demand relatively high electric power compared to conventional passive sensors such as accelerometers and strain gauges, existing battery technologies may not be suitable for long-term operation of the active sensing devices. To tackle this problem, a new wireless power and data transmission paradigm has been developed in this study. The ultimate goal of the research is to develop an optical system for guided wave generation and sensing. This paper mainly focuses on the excitation aspect of the overall system. The proposed technique wirelessly transmits power necessary for PZT-based guided wave generation using laser and optoelectronic devices. First, a desired waveform is generated and the intensity of the laser source is modulated accordingly using an electro-optic modulator (EOM). Next, the modulated laser is wirelessly transmitted to a photodiode connected to a PZT. Then, the photodiode converts the transmitted light into an electric signal and excites the PZT to generate guided waves on the structure where the PZT is attached to. Finally, the corresponding response from the sensing PZT is measured. The feasibility of the proposed method for wireless guided wave generation has been experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) can enhance the functionality of structures, improve its safety and reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and increase the service life. A new kind of SHM technology based on piezoelectric ceramic transducers is an effective way to realize the prospective functions. However, many of piezoelectric ceramic SHM systems, which are complicated, weighty, and having much equipment, are mainly used for laboratory researches. In order to meet the needs of engineering applications, a portable piezoelectric concrete SHM system which uses the virtual instrument technology is proposed and produced in this paper. The developed system which is based on piezoelectric transducers can be realized to monitor online vibration accelerations, dynamic stresses, concrete cracks, and so forth. The function of this integrated system has been effectively proved in test and in an engineering application. The experimental and applied results show that the system is reliable, of high degree of automation, and portable. The work provides important technical support for improvement of structure design and monitoring of structural health status.

Abstract:Local strain concentration is critically important for damage formation of structural components. Therefore, it is of particular interest in developing the structural health monitoring (SHM) method for large-scale, full-field, and on-site monitoring of local strain response in complicated structural components in service. The present work investigated a SHM method based on a pure organic mechanoresponsive luminogen (MRL), 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-nitrophenyl)ethane, for heterogeneous local strain concentration. Invisible heterogeneous local strain response in complicated weld joints is transformed into visible fluorescence under monotonic tension and cyclic stress loading. The local strain (<15%) calculated by fluorescence intensity has a good agreement with the results obtained by the conventional digital image correlation method, indicating good measurement accuracy of the calibrated organic MRL method. The heterogeneity of local strain in complicated weld joints increases along with elongation and number of stress cycles. Moreover, the higher mean stress and stress amplitude can induce significantly higher accumulated local strain in the relatively soft fusion zone region. Compared with conventional strain measurement methods, the present organic MRL method opens up new possibilities for large-scale, full-field, and on-site monitoring of local strain concentration and damage in complicated structural components.
A Lamb Waves Based Ultrasonic System for the Simultaneous Data Communication, Defect Inspection, and Power Transmission

Abstract:Lamb-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) has attracted extensive attention in recent years. This article aims to realize the functions of data communication, defect detection, and energy transmission through piezoelectric transducers. In this work, the S0 mode at 500 kHz and the A0 mode at 150 kHz are selected as the carrier waves and the optimized excitation frequencies are determined through analytical investigation and frequency sweeping experiments. The S0 mode is used for data communication and defect inspection due to the high excitation frequency and low dispersion properties. A single piezoelectric sensing element acts as the transmitter and a nine-element piezoelectric transducer array (PTA) is the receiver. Their roles exchange in terms of energy transmission based on the A0 mode. Simultaneous data communication and energy transmission are achieved based on the frequency division multiplexing (FDM) strategy. After performing a matched filter on the received signals, the digital data information can be recovered under the interference of the energy transmission signal. The synthetic aperture imaging technology (SAFT) is adopted for accurately locating defects on aluminum plates. In terms of energy transmission, a constructive interference performance is achieved by the transducer array with a transmitted power of 3.81 mW. This system has great potential for health monitoring of the enclosed structure by eliminating the cumbersome wires for powering and communication.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. Ultrasonic-guided wave (UGW) is an important technology for realizing structural health monitoring (SHM), and the piezoelectric transducer (PZT) is a commonly used actuator and sensor. The PZT layer is fabricated using a flexible printed circuit (FPC), and the interface of the PZTs is connected to the host of the monitoring system via cables. The flexible PZT layer (FPL) is easy to install, highly reliable, and widely used in industrial sites. However, as the distance between the host and the FPL gradually increases, the problem of guided wave (GW) signal attenuation caused by cables cannot be ignored. In addition, the use of shielded cables has the problem of heavy quality and high cost, and the use of unshielded cables has the problem of signal interference. Therefore, this paper proposes a digital smart layer (DSL) composed of a flexible signal acquisition system and a PZT array. The DSL acquires excitation and GW signals acquisition and performs PZT diagnostics. It connects to the host via a fixed six-wire cable and uses digital signals for communication. Multiple DSLs can be interconnected to form a network and perform damage detection simultaneously, improving the monitoring area and damage detection efficiency of the system. An experimental system was constructed on an aluminum plate to verify the functionality of the DSL. The results prove that the DSL solves the problems of signal attenuation and interference susceptibility of GW signal in long-distance cable transmission and realizes the diagnosis of PZT faults such as debonding and breakage. This paper provides a highly reliable and practical means of monitoring the condition of equipment structures such as airplanes, trains, and bridges.

Abstract:Nowadays, nonlinear vibration methods are increasingly used for the detection of damage mechanisms in polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials, which are anisotropic and heterogeneous. The originality of this study was the use of two nonlinear vibration methods to detect different types of damage within PMC through an in situ embedded polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric sensor. The two used methods are nonlinear resonance (NLR) and single frequency excitation (SFE). They were first tested on damage introduced during the manufacturing of the smart PMC plates, and second, on the damage that occurred after the manufacturing. The results show that both techniques are interesting, and probably a combination of them will be the best choice for SHM purposes. During the experimentation, an accelerometer was used, in order to validate the effectiveness of the integrated PVDF sensor.

Abstract:<p>Large-area, lightweight and flexible sensing networks are highly demanded in complex (either in structural topology or material property) structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. Development of piezopolymer offers a feasible solution. In pursuit of maximum exploitation of their functionality, the optimal fabrication technique requires to be investigated first. In this study, PVDF-TrFE coatings were <em>in-situ</em> fabricated and directly functionalized on structural surfaces in the consecutive processing steps as spray, thermal annealing, and corona poling. The processing conditions, including annealing temperature/time and poling voltage/duration, were correlated with their crystallinity, ferroelectric phase, morphology, polarization, and final piezoelectricity, through a systematic study. With the help of various characterization methods, the conditions of optimal functional performance were identified and rationalized. To study the feasibility of thus-prepared functional coatings in transducing guided waves, the host structures with sensors made of such coatings were interrogated by passive acoustic emission and active ultrasonic transmission to validate the sensing and actuation capability, respectively. The developed piezopolymer coatings possess excellent performance as a novel configuration of sensing networks, with lightweight, ultrathin, flexible, rapid-prototyping and adhesive-free features, manifesting high adaptability, high consistency, negligible inter-path interference, and minimal extra penalty for a robust SHM system.</p>

Abstract:Structural health monitoring technology can assess the status and integrity of structures in real time by advanced sensors, evaluate the remaining life of structure, and make the maintenance decisions on the structures. Piezoelectric materials, which can yield electrical output in response to mechanical strain/stress, are at the heart of structural health monitoring. Here, we present an overview of the recent progress in piezoelectric materials and sensors for structural health monitoring. The article commences with a brief introduction of the fundamental physical science of piezoelectric effect. Emphases are placed on the piezoelectric materials engineered by various strategies and the applications of piezoelectric sensors for structural health monitoring. Finally, challenges along with opportunities for future research and development of high-performance piezoelectric materials and sensors for structural health monitoring are highlighted.

Meta-structure enhanced second harmonic S 0 waves for material microstructural changes monitoring

Abstract:Cumulative second harmonic Lamb waves in nonlinear media feature increasing amplitudes with propagation distance, conducive to the monitoring of material microstructural changes in structures. The phenomenon can be readily generated by zero-order symmetric (S0) mode waves in the low-frequency range. However, in a practical piezoelectric-transducer-activated system, both S0 and A0 (zero-order antisymmetric) mode Lamb waves are inevitably excited, while only the former is responsible for cumulative effects. The generation efficiency of the cumulative second harmonics is then affected by the presence of the A0 waves. To tackle the problem, this study develops a metamaterial structure, referred to as a meta-structure, to tactically enhance the cumulative second harmonic S0 Lamb waves by converting the A0 mode components into S0 mode waves. Topology optimization is conducted to design the meta-structure, which is surface-mounted onto the structure under inspection, to achieve high-efficiency A0-to-S0 wave mode conversion. Through tuning the parameters and constraints of the optimization, the designed single-sided meta-structure breaks the structural symmetry in the thickness direction, while facilitating its practical implementation. Typical scenarios with different meta-structure materials are discussed. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the strain amplitudes of the fundamental S0 mode waves can be increased by 60% with the deployment of the meta-structure, alongside an enhancement of the second harmonic S0 mode waves at different sensing distances. Finally, the designed meta-structure is fabricated via 3D printing technique and tested experimentally on an aluminum plate subjected to thermal aging treatment for monitoring the heating-induced microstructural changes inside the structure. Experimental results confirm an increase in the wave amplitudes of the linear S0 mode waves with the assistance of the meta-structure. The developed system improves the sensitivity of nonlinear Lamb wave-based monitoring methods in characterizing material microstructural changes, which shows great promise for detecting incipient damage in practical structural health monitoring applications.

Abstract:The research field of structural health monitoring (SHM) in the realm of civil engineering has emerged rapidly. SHM concepts are based on integrated sensors and actuators to evaluate the structural state. Beside common structural response methods and other nondestructive testing techniques, wave-based ultrasonic techniques are widely used especially because of their flexibility. Monitoring cable structures such as overhead transmission lines or stay cables in suspension bridges is one objective of those wave-based methods. These structures are subject to aging, corrosion and other static and dynamic loads (e.g., wind, temperature). The cylindrical structures act as waveguides whereby monitoring of large distances with a single ultrasonic transducer is possible. However, the wave propagation is multimodal and dispersive, which complicates analysis of the wave motion and development of monitoring applications. This work addresses several aspects of the propagation of guided waves in cylinders, especially the analysis of reflection and transmission at discontinuities using finite element and boundary element methods.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) aims to monitor in real time the health state of engineering structures. For thin structures, Lamb Waves (LW) are very efficient for SHM purposes. A bonded piezoelectric transducer (PZT) emits LW in the structure in the form of a short tone burst. This initial wave packet (IWP) propagates in the structure and interacts with its boundaries and discontinuities and with eventual damages generating additional wave packets. The main issues with LW based SHM are that at least two LW modes are simultaneously excited and that those modes are dispersive. Matching Pursuit Method (MPM), which consists of approximating a signal as a sum of different delayed and scaled atoms taken from an a priori known learning dictionary, seems very appealing in such a context, however is limited to nondispersive signals and relies on a priori known dictionary. An improved version of MPM called the Single Atom Convolutional Matching Pursuit method (SACMPM), which addresses the dispersion phenomena by decomposing a measured signal as delayed and dispersed atoms and limits the learning dictionary to only one atom, is proposed here. Its performances are illustrated when dealing with numerical and experimental signals as well as its usage for damage detection. Although the signal approximation method proposed in this paper finds an original application in the context of SHM, this method remains completely general and can be easily applied to any signal processing problem.
