Abstract:Magnetostrictive patch transducers (MPT) with planar coils are ideal candidates for shear mode generation and detection in pipe and plate inspection with the advantages of flexibility, lightness and good directivity. However, the low energy conversion efficiency limits the application of the MPT in long distance inspection. In this article, a method for the enhancement of the MPT was proposed by dynamic magnetic field optimization using a soft magnetic patch (SMP). The SMP can reduce the magnetic resistance of the magnetic circuit, which increases the dynamic magnetic field intensity in the magnetostrictive patch during wave generation and restricts the induced dynamic magnetic field within the area around the coils for sensing during wave detection. Numerical simulations carried out at different frequencies verified the improvement of the dynamic magnetic fields by the SMP and influence of different affecting factors. The experimental validations of the signal enhancement in wave generation and detection were performed in an aluminum plate. The amplitude magnification could reach 12.7 dB when the MPTs were covered by the SMPs. Based on the numerical and experimental results, the SMP with a large relative permeability and thickness and close fitting between the SMP and coils were recommended when other application conditions were met.

Abstract:The T(0,1) mode guided wave is widely used in long term NDT of the pipelines. The magnetostrictive transducer for generating and detecting guided wave is important to long term NDT of the pipelines because the transducer is compact and can be used at high temperature. The paper explains the mechanism of the generation and detection of T(0,1) mode guided wave in magnetostrictive strip based on Wiedemann effect. The experiment with MSGW is done to confirm the mechanism in a aluminum pipe.
Magnetostrictive Helical Array Transducer for Inspecting Spiral Welded Pipes Using Flexural Guided Waves

Abstract:A wavefront analysis indicates that a flexural wave propagates at a helix angle with respect to the pipe axis. The expression for calculation of the helix angle for each flexural mode is given, and the helix angle dispersion curves for flexural modes are calculated. According to the new understanding of flexural guided waves, a magnetostrictive helical array transducer (MTIAT) is proposed for selectively exciting a single predominant flexural torsional guided wave in a pipe and inspecting spiral welded pipes using flexural waves. A MHAT contains a pre-magnetized magnetostrictive patch that is helically coupled with the outer surface of a pipe, and an array of novel compound comb coils that are wrapped around the helical magnetostrictive patch. The proposed wideband MHAT possesses the direction control ability. A verification experiment indicates that flexural torsional mode T(3,1) at center frequency f=64kHz is effectively actuated by a MHAT with 13-degree helix angle. A 20-degree IVIEIAT is adopted to inspect a spiral welded pipe, an artificial notch with cross section loss CSL=2.7% is effectively detected by using flexural waves.

Abstract:Ultrasonic guided waves have been successfully applied in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of pressure vessels and pipelines due to their advantages, such as long detection range and high inspection efficiency. Compared with other ultrasonic guided wave actuators, magnetostrictive transducers are more cost-effective, involve simpler fabrication process, and have higher possible transduction efficiency. The normal mode expansion (NME) method is adopted to analyze the forced response and perturbation analysis of elastic hollow cylinders with respect to magnetostrictive loadings, including partial loading, axial array loading, and circular array loading. The phase velocity and frequency spectra of axisymmetric/non-axisymmetric guided waves excited by magnetostrictive transducers are analyzed. The theoretically predicted trends are verified by finite element numerical simulations and experiments.
Ferroelectric Thin-Film Active Sensors for Structural Health Monitoring

Abstract:Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) have been proven a valuable tool in structural health monitoring. Piezoelectric wafer active sensors are able to send and receive guided Lamb/Rayleigh waves that scan the structure and detect the presence of incipient cracks and structural damage. In-situ thin-film active sensor deposition can eliminate the bonding layer to improve the durability issue and reduce the acoustic impedance mismatch. Ferroelectric thin films have been shown to have piezoelectric properties that are close to those of single-crystal ferroelectrics but the fabrication of ferroelectric thin films on structural materials (steel, aluminum, titanium, etc.) has not been yet attempted. In this work, in-situ fabrication method of piezoelectric thin-film active sensors arrays was developed using the nano technology approach. Specification for the piezoelectric thin-film active sensors arrays was based on electro-mechanical-acoustical model. Ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) thin films were successfully deposited on Ni tapes by pulsed laser deposition under the optimal synthesis conditions. Microstructural studies by X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the as-grown BTO thin films have the nanopillar structures with an average size of approximately 80 nm in diameter and the good interface structures with no inter-diffusion or reaction. The dielectric and ferroelectric property measurements exhibit that the BTO films have a relatively large dielectric constant, a small dielectric loss, and an extremely large piezoelectric response with a symmetric hysteresis loop. The research objective is to develop the fabrication and optimum design of thin-film active sensor arrays for structural health monitoring applications. The short wavelengths of the micro phased arrays will permit the phased-array imaging of smaller parts and smaller damage than is currently not possible with existing technology.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) technology has attracted more and more attention in aerospace and energy industries as it may detect and monitor early degradation and damage in the structures and thus avoid life and financial loss. Guided wave (GW) based inspection is very useful for the SHM of thin-walled structures due to its capability for long-distance and wide-range inspection with high sensitivity. However, the lack of small and high-performance transducers seriously limits the development of GW-based SHM technology. In this paper, a thin-film magnetostrictive patch transducer (MPT) that can generate and receive single-mode and almost nondispersive GW is proposed. The new transducer is composed of an alloy patch and a double-layer flexible printed circuit (FPC). Firstly, the basic structure and principle of the proposed transducer are presented and analyzed. Compared with current single-mode GW transducers, the main advantages of the proposed transducer are lightweight, flexibility, and high transduction efficiency. Both the numerical simulation and experimental results validate that the new transducer has good performance in generating and receiving single and almost nondispersive S0 mode GW in an aluminum plate. It is very promising to be applied for the SHM in curved thin-walled structures.

Abstract:Cumulative second harmonic Lamb waves in nonlinear media feature increasing amplitudes with propagation distance, conducive to the monitoring of material microstructural changes in structures. The phenomenon can be readily generated by zero-order symmetric (S0) mode waves in the low-frequency range. However, in a practical piezoelectric-transducer-activated system, both S0 and A0 (zero-order antisymmetric) mode Lamb waves are inevitably excited, while only the former is responsible for cumulative effects. The generation efficiency of the cumulative second harmonics is then affected by the presence of the A0 waves. To tackle the problem, this study develops a metamaterial structure, referred to as a meta-structure, to tactically enhance the cumulative second harmonic S0 Lamb waves by converting the A0 mode components into S0 mode waves. Topology optimization is conducted to design the meta-structure, which is surface-mounted onto the structure under inspection, to achieve high-efficiency A0-to-S0 wave mode conversion. Through tuning the parameters and constraints of the optimization, the designed single-sided meta-structure breaks the structural symmetry in the thickness direction, while facilitating its practical implementation. Typical scenarios with different meta-structure materials are discussed. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the strain amplitudes of the fundamental S0 mode waves can be increased by 60% with the deployment of the meta-structure, alongside an enhancement of the second harmonic S0 mode waves at different sensing distances. Finally, the designed meta-structure is fabricated via 3D printing technique and tested experimentally on an aluminum plate subjected to thermal aging treatment for monitoring the heating-induced microstructural changes inside the structure. Experimental results confirm an increase in the wave amplitudes of the linear S0 mode waves with the assistance of the meta-structure. The developed system improves the sensitivity of nonlinear Lamb wave-based monitoring methods in characterizing material microstructural changes, which shows great promise for detecting incipient damage in practical structural health monitoring applications.

Abstract:The electromagnetic ultrasound detection technology provides an efficient method to inspect the structural health status. For the pipeline structure, the guided ultrasonic wave propagating along the axial direction has been the focus of the current research. However, the helical wave owns the advantage of obtaining the defect information in extra angles and has not been explored sufficiently. In this work, a transducer with a sector configuration is designed for generating helical shear horizontal waves in a pipeline. The magnetostrictive effect is analyzed, and the model is built in the finite element simulation software of COMSOL Multiphysics. The electromagnetic field and displacement distribution are studied. To evaluate the performance of the transducer, the half divergence angle is defined to measure the acoustic beam and evaluate the capacity in generating helical waves. Corresponding experiments are also implemented to analyze the influencing factors in the structural design of the transducer. The results indicate that the pulse cycle affects the half divergence angle slightly. The compromise should be considered when designing the central angle of the transducer because it influences the signal amplitude and further imaging resolution in a contradictory way.

Though the M-EMAT possesses high-order harmonics excitation ability in nature, its conventional way can only generate a fundamental component of SH0 mode. The analytical modeling was performed in this study to releasing the ability of M-EMAT in generating odd harmonics of SH0 mode. First, the inaccurate conditions of magnetic fields for relative permeability calculation in the existing model are corrected in the proposed model. Second, the error of the existing model in predicting the spectrum of the SH0 mode generated in Nickel plate is estimated. Third, numerical solutions are provided by the improved model to examine the key factors governing the ability of M-EMAT in generating odd harmonics of SH0 mode. The conclusions demonstrated that the intensity ratio (H-S/H-D) of static and dynamic magnetic fields is adjusted below 1 and the ability of M-EMAT in generating odd harmonics of SH0 mode can be activated. The normalized amplitude of 3rd harmonics decays exponentially with the increase of H-S/H-D, which is independent of geometrical parameters of M-EMAT. The improved model can effectively optimize excitation parameters of M-EMAT and generate odd harmonics of SH0 mode in plate.

Controllable SH wave radiation patterns generated by finite-size face-shear piezoelectric transducers for structural health monitoring

Abstract:The fundamental shear horizontal (SH0) wave in plate-like structures is of practical importance in structural health monitoring due to its non-dispersive characteristics. However, compared with Lamb wave, SH0 wave is less used in practice since it is difficult to be excited by using conventional piezoelectric transducers. Recently, face-shear piezoelectric mode has been realized in PZT ceramics and several face-shear piezoelectric transducers have been developed to excite pure SH0 wave in plates. However, when controllable radiation pattern of SH0 wave is required, it is found that no mathematical basis is available for designers to optimize the transducer's parameters. In this work, based on the reciprocal theorem of elastodynamics and Huygens' principle, a theoretical model is proposed to describe the SH0 wave field generated by arbitrary-shaped face-shear transducers bonded on an infinite isotropic plate. It is proved that the wave field generated by a face-shear transducer is equivalent to that generated by uniform in-plane tractions along its perimeter. Then the proposed model is applied to two specific cases of a single square face-shear (d24) PZT wafer and a bidirectional SH0 wave piezoelectric transducer(BSH-PT).Explicit analytical expressions for both cases are successfully obtained. The accuracy of the obtained analytical model is verified by both experiments and FEM simulations. Furthermore, some general guidelines based on the analytical model are presented for optimization of the transducer's dimensions. Finally, based on the guidelines, a new bidirectional SH0 wave piezoelectric transducer is proposed with very small beam divergence.
Caspofungin-induced severe toxic epidermal necrolysis.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To report a case of suspected caspofungin-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). CASE SUMMARY An 86-year-old man had a right femur intertrochanteric fracture and right proximal humerus fracture due to an accidental fall. Disseminated Candida krusei infection complicated the postoperative course. Candidemia persisted despite 25 days of treatment with parenteral fluconazole. The antifungal agent was changed to intravenous caspofungin. Immediately after administration of a caspofungin 70-mg loading dose, a transient skin rash developed, which resolved after discontinuation of the drug and immediate treatment with intravenous diphenhydramine 30 mg and methylprednisolone 40 mg. Six days later, a caspofungin 70-mg loading dose was given again due to increasing sepsis. Erythematous and purpuric macules and plaques developed the next day and rapidly progressed to extensive erythema, exfoliation, blisters, and skin erosions. A dermatologist was consulted and TEN was diagnosed. The patient was treated with intravenous hydrocortisone 100 mg every 8 hours and diphenhydramine 30 mg every 8 hours. The skin lesions progressed unrelentingly and the patient died of refractory shock 6 days later. DISCUSSION TEN is a rare but life-threatening systemic and cutaneous disease that is most often the result of an adverse drug reaction. It usually manifests as fever and influenza-like symptoms 1-3 days before the development of mucocutaneous lesions, namely erythema and erosions of the buccal, ocular, and genital mucosa and characteristic epidermal detachment. The precise pathogenesis is not fully understood. Several models have been described, including immunopathology, genetic susceptibility, Fas-Fas ligand, perforin/granzyme, and cytokine dysregulation. Use of the Naranjo probability scale indicated a probable relationship between caspofungin and the development of TEN in this patient. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report of caspofungin-induced TEN. Health-care professionals are advised to be aware of the early presentations of TEN in patients receiving caspofungin.
New Magnetostrictive Transducer Designs for Emerging Application Areas of NDE

Abstract:Magnetostrictive transduction has been widely utilized in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) applications, specifically for the generation and reception of guided waves for the long-range inspection of components such as pipes, vessels, and small tubes. Transverse-motion guided wave modes (e.g., torsional vibrations in pipes) are the most common choice for long-range inspection applications, because the wave motion is in the plane of the structure surface, and therefore does not couple well to the surrounding material. Magnetostrictive-based sensors for these wave modes using the Wiedemann effect have been available for several years. An alternative configuration of a sensor for generating and receiving these transverse-motion guided waves swaps the biasing and time-varying magnetic field directions. This alternative design is a reversed Wiedemann effect magnetostrictive transducer. These transducers exhibit a number of unique features compared with the more conventional Wiedemann sensor, including: (1) the use of smaller rare earth permanent magnets to achieve large, uniform, and self-sustained bias field strengths; (2) the use of more efficient electric coil arrangements to induce a stronger time-varying magnetic field for a given coil impedance; (3) beneficial non-linear operating characteristics, given the efficiency improvements in both magnetic fields; and (4) the ability to generate unidirectional guided waves when the field arrangement is combined with a magnetically soft ferromagnetic strip (patch). Reversed Wiedemann effect magnetostrictive transducers will be presented that are suitable for different inspection applications, one using electromagnetic generation and reception directly in a ferromagnetic material, and another design that integrates a magnetostrictive patch to improve its efficiency and enable special operating characteristics.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) of in-service structures is becoming increasingly important. The fundamental shear horizontal (SH 0 ) guided wave mode in plate-like structures shows great potential in damage detection due to its non-dispersive and in-plane vibration properties. In order to generate SH 0 waves, a practical Lorentz force-based electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) was introduced in this study using the flexible circumferential printed circuit (CPC). The designed principle of CPC-EMAT was similar to that of the circumferential magnet array (CMA)-based EMAT. However, the structure of the CMA-EMAT is complex, and it is difficult to assemble for generating high frequency and uniformly distributed omnidirectional SH 0 waves. Firstly, the performance of the CMA-EMAT with different numbers of magnets was investigated by finite element simulations. Then, the CPC was proposed to replace the CMA with an optimized designed on its size. The CPC-EMAT is easier to fabricate compared to the CMA-EMAT. Finally, experimental tests were conducted for systematic validations on the transducer properties. Simulation and experimental results show that the CPC-EMAT can successfully generate the desirable and acceptable omnidirectional SH 0 waves. The proposed CPC-EMAT is anticipated to find widespread application in SH-typed guided wave-based SHM.

Alternating Winding Magnetostrictive Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducer for Pipe Torsional Guided Wave Generation

Abstract:Ultrasonic guided waves propagating in bounded elastic media called waveguide are used extensively nowadays for rapid screening and long distance inspection of defect-prone structures. Various types of transducers are available for guided wave generation, including piezoelectric transducers and electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) etc.. EMAT is based on Lorentz force and/or magnetostrictive effect, and advantageous sometimes because of its non-contact nature. An alternating winding magnetostrictive type EMAT for torsional mode ultrasonic guided wave generation in a steel pipe is introduced in this paper. This new transducer design is composed of a pre-magnetized Nickel strip with circumferential static magnetic field and a coaxial coil in an alternating winding pattern. Theoretically this transducer design could be viewed as an extension of existing magnetostrictive type EMAT for SH guided wave generation in a steel plate. The alternating winding pattern enables accurate and easy control of guided wave mode. Results of experiments done on a steel pipe were shown to verify this transducer design.
Pure SH1 Guided-Wave Generation Method with Dual Periodic-Permanent-Magnet Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers for Plates Inspection

Abstract:High frequency guided-waves offer a trade-off between the high sensitivity of local bulk ultrasonic thickness measurements and the large area scanning of lower frequency guided-waves, so it has been a growing interest for corrosion inspection with the dispersive SH1 mode. However, according to the dispersive curve, it is hard to generate the pure SH1 mode since the non-dispersive SH0 mode will be excited simultaneously. Thus, this paper investigates a transducer design method to generate a pure SH1 guided-wave, where the dual periodic-permanent-magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducers (PPM EMATs) are placed on exactly opposite positions either side of the plate symmetrically. The suppression effect for SH0 and the enhancement effect for SH1 of the dual PPM EMATs are mainly discussed by theoretical analysis and simulation analysis, and the influence of positioning errors of PPM EMATs placed on opposite sides of the plate on its performances are analyzed. Employing the proposed dual PPM EMATs, some experiments are performed to verify the reliability of finite element simulation. The results indicate that the dual PPM EMATs can suppress the SH0 mode and generate the pure SH1 mode effectively. Moreover, the longitudinal and lateral positioning errors can affect the dual PPM EMATs performances significantly.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem that small defects hidden behind pipeline support parts are difficult to detect effectively in small spaces, such as offshore oil platforms, a meander-coil-type dual magnetic group circumferential magnetostrictive guided wave transducer is developed in this paper. The transducer, which consists of a coil, two sets of permanent magnets, and a magnetostrictive patch, can excite a high-frequency circumferential shear horizontal (CSH) guided wave. The energy conversion efficiency of the MPT is optimized through magnetic field simulation and experiment, and the amplitude of the defect signal is enhanced 1.9 times. The experimental results show that the MPT developed in this paper can effectively excite and receive CSH2 mode guided waves with a center frequency of 1.6 MHz. Compared with the traditional PPM EMAT transducer, the excitation energy of the transducer is significantly enhanced, and the defects of the 2 mm round hole at the back of the support can be effectively detected.

Abstract:Shear-horizontal (SH) wave is commonly used in monitoring and detecting steel plate structures. Electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) based on magnetostriction owns higher transducing efficiency and can be applied in non-contact situations. In some practical applications, it is necessary to inspect the structure on a specific direction and the inspecting direction is required to be variable and accurately controllable. This work proposes a novel direction-controllable EMAT for SH0 mode waves based on magnetostriction. Theoretical foundation and analysis on the magnetostriction model of the new EMAT and working parameters determination are conducted. The detailed structure and design of the new EMAT are presented, with the pre-magnetized open annular nickel strap bonded to the steel plate providing the circumferential static bias magnetic field, and the cooperation of embedded conductors in the rotating slider and open metal rings providing the dynamic magnetic field. Besides, the experimental system for the performance verification of the new EMAT is setup. Three indexes, the dead zone angle, focus angle and consistency error are defined to evaluate the performance quantitatively. The dead zone angle of the new EMAT is 28.74.; the focus angle is 10.7.; the consistency error is only 1.4%. Experimental results show that the proposed direction-controllable EMAT is highly directional. The stimulating direction can be accurately controlled, and the circumferential consistency is fairly high. The direction-controllable EMAT can hopefully provide a practical solution for directional monitoring and inspecting for steel plate structures.

Abstract:Physics-based computational models play a key role in the study of wave propagation for structural health monitoring (SHM) and the development of improved damage detection methodologies. Due to the complex nature of guided waves, accurate and efficient computation tools are necessary to investigate the mechanisms responsible for dispersion, coupling, and interaction with damage. In this paper, a fully coupled electromechanical elastodynamic model for wave propagation in a heterogeneous, anisotropic material system is developed. The final framework provides the full three dimensional displacement and electrical potential fields for arbitrary plate and transducer geometries and excitation waveform and frequency. The model is validated theoretically and proven computationally efficient. Studies are performed with surface bonded piezoelectric sensors to gain insight into the physics of experimental techniques used for SHM. Collocated actuation of the fundamental Lamb wave modes is modeled over a range of frequencies to demonstrate mode tuning capabilities. The displacement of the sensing surface is compared to the piezoelectric sensor electric potential to investigate the relationship between plate displacement and sensor voltage output. Since many studies, including the ones investigated in this paper, are difficult to perform experimentally, the developed model provides a valuable tool for the improvement of SHM techniques.

Health Monitoring of Stiffened Metallic Plates Using Nonlinear Wave Interaction and Embedded PZT Transducers

Abstract:The ultimate strength of a structural component can be limited in the presence of microscopic imperfections, which serve as the origin of damage process. These micro imperfections are considerably shorter than the acoustic wavelength of the frequencies normally used in ultrasonic nondestructive technique. As a result, the sensitivity of the linear acoustic characteristics (attenuation, velocity etc.) is not sufficient enough to detect the microscopic imperfections of a structure. But, these micro imperfections produce local excess nonlinearity, which is higher than the intrinsic nonlinearity of the intact structure. On the other hand, weakly or incompletely bonded interfaces (e.g., contact-type defects, cracks, debondings, delaminations and loosening in bolted joints) also exhibit highly nonlinear behavior as the contact area changes frequently when elastic waves propagate through the interface. The various nonlinear techniques for damage detection developed in the recent years are: non-linear resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (NRUS) and non-linear wave modulation spectroscopy (NWMS).The later consists of two methods, namely harmonics generation and sidebands generation. In this work a simulation study has been carried out using ANSYS Finite Element (FE) software, where the NWMS methodology is adopted for the case of a stiffened aluminum plate for different degrees of damage in the form of different delamination lengths. A damage index (DI) is defined by taking into account the relative amplitude of the harmonics or the side-bands with respect to the carrier frequency amplitude. It is found that the DI increases with the increase in delamination length.
