Abstract:As the country with the largest anthropogenic CO2 emission, China is greatly influential on fighting with climate change. However, CO2 emitted from on-road vehicles in China is a barrier to its carbon neutral due to the inevitable increase trend of vehicle quantity. Thus, to meet the requirement of refined policy-making for vehicular CO2 abatement, we calculated the CO2 emissions from 37 vehicular types and 3 fuel categories across 339 cities in China through the bottom-up method, and developed a national vehicular CO2 emission inventory in a high spatial resolution (1 km x 1 km). Additionally, machine learnings were conducted to the inventory for the emission pattern identification. It was found that the total vehicular CO2 emission in 2019 was 1090 million tons, and 77.1% of CO2 was emitted by vehicles of light-duty gasoline vehicle (LDGV) and heavy-duty diesel truck (HDDT). In addition, for the grids accompanying CO2 emissions, 75% of vehicular CO2 emissions were contributed by 15% of grids (hot grids). Furthermore, results of machine learning showed that LDGVs mainly distributed in economically advanced regions of which vehicular structures were relatively simple, while HDDTs were widely applied on the national scale. Based on the results above, two measures were proposed: (1) Electric cars have to be strongly promoted in hot grids for the LDGV replacement. (2) Long-distance freight tool replacements are urgently required in the national wide. Our study provided a studying base for further investigations on decarbonization and a new insight of China's vehicular CO2 emission controls.
Long-term plume-chasing measurements: Emission characteristics and spatial patterns of heavy-duty trucks in a megacity

Abstract:Assessing the emissions of heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDDTs) is crucial for managing air quality in megacities, especially concerning nitrogen oxides (NOX) and black carbon (BC). This study employed mobile plume chasing to monitor the real-world emissions of over 7,778 HDDTs in Shenzhen. The findings indicate that the real-world NOX emission factors (EF) of China IV trucks did not differ significantly from those of China III, whereas China V and VI vehicles demonstrated fleet-averaged reductions of 27% and 85%, respectively. For China V, a significant decrease in the NOX EF for HDDTs registered after 2017 was attributed to the installation of advanced aftertreatment systems, including diesel oxidation catalysts (DOC) and Diesel Particle Filters (DPF), along with selective catalytic reduction (SCR). These technologies led to an average reduction of 42% in NOX and 61% in BC emissions. Seasonal variations were pronounced, with winter (∼20°C) NOX EF 40% higher than summer (∼35°C) levels. Conversely, BC EF decreased by 26% in winter, indicating significant impacts of ambient temperature on emissions. Spatial analysis revealed that the average NOX EF of HDDTs on east freeways was 1.4 times higher than that on urban expressways, influenced by variations in the proportion of vehicle types segmented by usage. These findings offer a comprehensive perspective on HDDTs emissions, highlighting the importance of large-scale emission monitoring through plume chasing for precise and effective control of real-world HDDTs emissions.
Emission Measurements on a Large Sample of Heavy-Duty Diesel Trucks in China by Using Mobile Plume Chasing

Abstract:Real-world heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDTs) were found to emit far more excess nitrogen oxides (NO X ) and black carbon (BC) pollutants than regulation limits. It is essential to systematically evaluate on-road NOX and BC emission levels for mitigating HDT emissions. This study launched 2109 plume chasing campaigns for NO X and BC emissions of HDTs across several regions in China from 2017 to 2020. It was found that NOX emissions had limited reductions from China III to China V, while BC emissions of HDTs exhibited high reductions with stricter emission standard implementation. This paper showed that previous studies underestimated 18% of NOX emissions in China in 2019 and nearly half of the real-world NO(X )emissions from HDTs (determined by updating the emission trends of HDTs) exceeded the regulation limits. Furthermore, the ambient temperature was identified as a primary driver of NOX emissions for HDTs, and the low-temperature penalty has caused a 9-29% increase in NOX emissions in winter in major regions of China. These results would provide important data support for the precise control of the NOX and BC emissions from HDTs.
Real-world emission characteristics of black carbon emitted by on-road China IV and China V diesel trucks

Abstract:Diesel vehicle is an important source of black carbon (BC). A portable emission measurement system including a photo-acoustic extinctiometer and SEMTECH-LDV was used to measure the real-world emissions of 14 light-duty and heavy-duty diesel trucks (LDDTs and HDDTs, meeting the China IV and China V standards) in Beijing. BC emission factors and the BC/PM2.5 ratio were obtained, and the effects of the vehicle type, emission standard and driving cycle on emissions were analyzed. The tightening of emission standards and the advancement of vehicle technology have reduced BC emissions from the China II standard to the China V standard. The emission reductions of BC are lower than those of other components of PM2.5 from the China II standard to the China IV standard but higher from the China IV standard to the China V standard. The BC and PM2.5 had the same main sources for the HDDTs and China IV LDDTs but had different sources for the China V LDDTs having diesel particulate filters. The BC/PM2.5 ratios of LDDTs, and HDDTs decreased from the China IV standard to the China V standard by 97.2% and 38.2%, respectively. The BC/PM2.5 ratio for China V LDDTs was 10 to 20 times lower than that for other diesel vehicles. The BC emissions tested under the highway driving cycle were 39.4% ± 16.7% lower than those under the no-highway driving cycle, but the BC/PM2.5 ratios had the opposite tendency. More China V and China VI heavy-duty diesel vehicles equipped with diesel particulate filters need to be tested to obtain more accurate BC/PM2.5 data and to improve the readiness of emission inventory calculations. The findings of this study help clarify the BC emission characteristics of diesel vehicles on actual roads and provide scientific basis for the formulation of emission control strategies for diesel vehicles in China.

Abstract:China's new "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" set a target for total NOx emission reduction of 10% for the period of 2011–2015. Heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) have been considered a major contributor to NOx emissions in China. Beijing initiated a comprehensive vehicle test program in 2008. This program included a sub-task for measuring on-road emission profiles of hundreds of HDDVs using portable emission measurement systems (PEMS). The major finding is that neither the on-road distance-specific (g km−1) nor brake-specific (g kWh−1) NOx emission factors for diesel buses and heavy-duty diesel trucks improved in most cases as emission standards became more stringent. For example, the average NOx emission factors for Euro II, Euro III and Euro IV buses are 11.3 ± 3.3 g km−1, 12.5 ± 1.3 g km−1, and 11.8 ± 2.0 g km−1, respectively. No statistically significant difference in NOx emission factors was observed between Euro II and III buses. Even for Euro IV buses equipped with SCR systems, the NOx emission factors are similar to Euro III buses. The data regarding real-time engine performance of Euro IV buses suggest the engine certification cycles did not reflect their real-world operating conditions. These new on-road test results indicate that previous estimates of total NOx emissions for HDDV fleet may be significantly underestimated. The new estimate in total NOx emissions for the Beijing HDDV fleet in 2009 is 37.0 Gg, an increase of 45% compared to the previous study. Further, we estimate that the total NOx emissions for the national HDDV fleet in 2009 are approximately 4.0 Tg, higher by 1.0 Tg (equivalent to 18% of total NOx emissions for vehicle fleet in 2009) than that estimated in the official report. This would also result in 4% increase in estimation of national anthropogenic NOx emissions. More effective control measures (such as promotion of CNG buses and a new in-use compliance testing program) are urged to secure the goal of total NOx mitigation for the HDDV fleet in the future.

Abstract:This study is the first in a series of papers that aim to develop high-resolution emission databases for different anthropogenic sources in China. Here we focus on on-road transportation. Because of the increasing impact of on-road transportation on regional air quality, developing an accurate and high-resolution vehicle emission inventory is important for both the research community and air quality management. This work proposes a new inventory methodology to improve the spatial and temporal accuracy and resolution of vehicle emissions in China. We calculate, for the first time, the monthly vehicle emissions for 2008 in 2364 counties (an administrative unit one level lower than city) by developing a set of approaches to estimate vehicle stock and monthly emission factors at county-level, and technology distribution at provincial level. We then introduce allocation weights for the vehicle kilometers traveled to assign the county-level emissions onto 0.05 degrees x 0.05 degrees grids based on the China Digital Road-network Map (CDRM). The new methodology overcomes the common shortcomings of previous inventory methods, including neglecting the geographical differences between key parameters and using surrogates that are weakly related to vehicle activities to allocate vehicle emissions. The new method has great advantages over previous methods in depicting the spatial distribution characteristics of vehicle activities and emissions. This work provides a better understanding of the spatial representation of vehicle emissions in China and can benefit both air quality modeling and management with improved spatial accuracy.
Characteristics of On-road Diesel Vehicles: Black Carbon Emissions in Chinese Cities Based on Portable Emissions Measurement

Abstract:Black carbon (BC) emissions from heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) are rarely continuously measured using portable emission measurement systems (PEMSs). In this study, we utilize a PEMS to obtain real-world BC emission profiles for 25 HDDVs in China. The average fuel-based BC emissions of HDDVs certified according to Euro II, III, IV, and V standards are 2224 ± 251, 612 ± 740, 453 ± 584, and 152 ± 3 mg kg(-1), respectively. Notably, HDDVs adopting mechanical pump engines had significantly higher BC emissions than those equipped with electronic injection engines. Applying the useful features of PEMSs, we can relate instantaneous BC emissions to driving conditions using an operating mode binning methodology, and the average emission rates for Euro II to Euro IV diesel trucks can be constructed. From a macroscopic perspective, we observe that average speed is a significant factor affecting BC emissions and is well correlated with distance-based emissions (R(2) = 0.71). Therefore, the average fuel-based and distance-based BC emissions on congested roads are 40 and 125% higher than those on freeways. These results should be taken into consideration in future emission inventory studies.
Chemical Characterization of PM2.5 Emitted from On-Road Heavy-Duty Diesel Trucks in China

Abstract:Heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDDTs) are gaining more attention because of their contribution to NOx and PM2.5 emissions. To evaluate their contribution to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5), not only their emission factors, but also their source profile is required. We conducted on-road emissions tests to characterize the PM2.5 emission, documenting per second mass emission rates from in-use HDDTs in China, using portable emissions measurement systems. The average PM2.5 emission factors for pre-EURO and EURO 1 HDDTs were 1.104 g/km and 0.822 g/km, equivalent to 6.106 g/kg and 3.132 g/kg based on fuel consumption. Element carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) were the major components: EC accounted for 45-65% of PM2.5 for pre-EURO HDDTs and 36-69% for EURO 1 HDDTs, while the OC fraction for pre-EURO and EURO 1 HDDTs ranged from 20 to 31% and 19-31%, respectively. Thus, the average EC emission factors for pre-EURO and EURO 1 HDDTs were 0.667 g/km and 0.502 g/km, showing that implementation of tighter emission standards resulted in a 25% EC output reduction from pre-EURO to EURO 1 vehicles. Sulfate, comprising about 1% of PM2.5 mass, is still an abundant species in PM2.5 from HDDTs because of the high sulfur content in diesel fuel in China. Using these data, we updated national PM2.5 emission profiles for pre-EURO and EURO 1 HDDTs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
On-road diesel vehicle emission factors for nitrogen oxides and black carbon in two Chinese cities

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NOx) and black carbon (BC) emission factors (EF) of 440 on-road diesel trucks were determined by conducting on-road chasing studies in Beijing and Chongqing, China, in the winter 2010. NOx and BC EF distributions are reported. The median NOx EFs for trucks sampled on level roads in Chongqing and Beijing are 40.0 and 47.4g kg-fuel−1, respectively. The median BC EFs are 1.1 and 0.4g kg-fuel−1in Chongqing and Beijing, respectively. In addition, a clear downward trend of BC EFs of on-road diesel trucks sampled in Beijing since 2008 is observed. Moreover, Beijing-registered trucks had the lowest BC EFs among the entire sample. These observations appear to reflect the effectiveness of emission standard and fuel quality standard implemented in Beijing (China IV) and nationwide (China III) in reducing BC (and likely overall particulate matter) emission. However, NOx EFs for Beijing-registered trucks did not show lower value than those from other regions. Unlike black carbon, there is no clear correlation between emission controls and NOx emissions from the sampled on-road trucks. Further analysis shows that trucks with high BC EFs do not usually have high NOx EFs, and vice versa, indicating that the current emission standards implemented in Beijing and nationwide have only limited impact on NOx emissions control. Therefore, effective multi-pollutant control strategies and in-use compliance programs are imperative to reduce the overall emissions from the transportation sector.
Heavy-duty diesel vehicles dominate vehicle emissions in a tunnel study in northern China.

Abstract:The relative importance of contributions of gasoline vehicles (GVs) and diesel vehicles (DVs), heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) and non-HDDVs to on-road vehicle emissions remains unclear. Vehicle emission factors (EFs), including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), NO-NO2-NOx, and carbon monoxide (CO), were measured (August 4-18, 2017) in an urban tunnel in Tianjin, northern China. The average EFs (mg km−1 veh−1) of the fleet were as follows: 9.21 (95% confidence interval: 1.60, 23.07) for PM2.5, 62.08 (21.21, 138.25) for NO, 20.42 (0.79, 45.48) for NO2, 83.72 (26.29, 162.87) for NOx, and 284.54 (18.22, 564.67) for CO. The fleet-average EFs exhibited diurnal variations, due to diurnal variations in the proportion of HDDVs in the fleet, though the hourly proportion of HDDVs never exceeded 10% during the study period. The reconstructed average EFs for on-road vehicle emissions of PM2.5, NO, NO2, and NOx, and CO were approximately 2.2, 1.7, 1.5, 2.0, and 1.6 times as much as those in the tunnel, respectively, due to the higher HDDV fractions in the whole city than those in the tunnel. The EFs of PM2.5, NO, NO2, and NOx, and CO from each HDDV were approximately 75, 81, 24, 65, and 33 times of those from each non-HDDV, respectively. HDDVs were responsible for approximately 81.92%, 83.02%, 59.79%, 79.79%, and 66.77% of the total PM2.5, NO, NO2, and NOx, and CO emissions from on-road vehicles in Tianjin, respectively. DVs, especially HDDVs, are major sources of on-road PM2.5, NO-NO2-NOx, and CO emissions in northern China. The contribution of HDDVs to fleet emissions calculated by the EFs from Chinese ‘on-road vehicle emission inventory guidebook’ were underestimated, as compared to our results. The EFs from on-road vehicles should be updated due to the rapid progression of vehicle technology combined with emission standards in China. The management and control of HDDV emissions have become urgent to reduction of on-road vehicle emissions.

Abstract:One comprehensive emission inventory of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CH4, CO2 and N2O with high spatial reso-lution (0.01 degrees x 0.01 degrees) for 58 cities in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and its surrounding areas (BTHSA) during 2000-2020 are developed by using COPERT model and ArcGIS methodology. The results show that vehicular emissions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and CH4 have begun to decrease or slow their growth rates in recent years due to the imple-mentation of measures to control vehicular emissions. However, vehicular emissions of CO2 increase rapidly due to lit-tle fuel economy improvement. Besides, the usage of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems by heavy duty truck (HDT) is the main factor impacting the growth trend of vehicular N2O emissions since 2017. By 2020, vehicular emis-sions of CO, HC, NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC, CO2, CH4 and N2O are estimated at about 1.65 Mt, 0.35 Mt, 1.39 Mt, 87.44 kt, 55.06 kt, 15.57 kt, 527.71 Mt, 36.20 kt and 8.56 kt, respectively. Therein, China III, IV, IV and IV passenger cars (PCs) are the predominated models for vehicular emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2, accounting for 19.59-28.26 % of the total vehicular emission of corresponding pollutant. Nevertheless, the major contributors of vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are China III (29.64 %), III (18.03 %), III (22.81 %), III (42.16 %) and V (22.28 %) HDTs, respectively. The gridded vehicular emissions vary significantly, with emissions of CO, HC, CH4 and CO2 being mainly concentrated in central urban areas of cities (e.g., Beijing, Tangshan, Zhengzhou, Tianjin, Qingdao, Jinan). Nevertheless, the grids with high vehicular emissions of NOX, PM10, PM2.5, BC and N2O are mainly distributed along the expressway and the suburban roads of cities (e.g., Linyi, Tangshan, Jining, Weifang, Shijiazhuang, Tianjin, Baoding). Finally, multi-year uncertainties of vehicular emission inventory are discussed.
On-Board Measurements of Emissions from Diesel Trucks in Five Cities in China

Abstract:This paper, which focuses on diesel trucks, is the third in a series of three papers published in Atmospheric Environment to understand vehicle emissions in China by conducting on-board emission measurements. Diesel trucks are a significant source of emissions in ambient air, especially for NOx. Recently, China announces an aggressive target to reduce national NOx emissions by 10% from 2010 to 2015 in the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan (2011–2015)” and diesel vehicles are identified as a key target for NOx control. However, the understanding of the real-world emissions of diesel trucks is limited. In this study, we measured HC, CO, NOx, and PM2.5 emissions from 175 diesel trucks of different sizes and technologies in five Chinese cities during 2007 and 2011, and generated emission factors on the basis of the measurements. The results show that the HC, CO, and PM2.5 emission factors have been reduced significantly as the emission standards become more stringent from Euro 0 to Euro IV, but the NOx emission factors change differently. Euro II trucks have 3–6% higher NOx emission levels than Euro I technologies and Euro III trucks fail to show a reduction as regulated by the standards. More stringent NOx requirements (e.g. Euro IV) for diesel vehicles need to be enforced. The comparison with the emission factors used in recent emission inventory studies shows that these inventories may have overestimated or underestimated diesel emissions for the years after 2006. This study emphasizes the importance of conducting local measurement research to improve the accuracy of the estimates of mobile emissions in China.

Abstract:Mobile source emissions are some of the major causes of air pollution across the world and are associated with numerous adverse health impacts. China has implemented increasingly stringent emission standards over the past few decades, the most recent one being the sixth emission standard (China VI) first rolled out in 2019. The China VI standard places special emphasis on tightening limits for NO x emission and introduces remote monitoring of vehicles' On-board diagnostics (OBD) data to reduce emissions from diesel and gas-powered heavy-duty vehicles (HDV). This paper aims to establish a methodology to calculate HDV NO x emissions on an extended timescale, and under real-world operations. OBD data was collected and examined from 53 China VI diesel HDVs and 14 China V diesel HDVs, which found that the average NO x emission factors are 1.420 g/km and 3.894 g/km for the two samples respectively; this indicates that the implementation of China VI standard helps to significantly reduce NO x emission from HDVs. Combining the emission factors and calculated travel distances collected by OBD and vehicle sales data, the China VI emission standard is estimated to have resulted in 43,969 tons of NO x emission reduction by the end of 2020. With China announcing country-wide enforcement of the new standard in 2021, >1.7 million tons of NO x emission could be avoided by 2023 annually.

Emission characteristics and control scenario analysis of VOCs from heavy-duty diesel trucks

Abstract:Vehicle exhaust substantially contributes to ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that imperil environmental and human health. The quantitative characterization of VOCs derived from heavy-duty diesel trucks (HDDTs) at a high spatiotemporal resolution is an important prerequisite of atmospheric quality management. However, there is little knowledge about VOC emission characteristics and accurate control policies of HDDTs owing to limited fine-grained traffic activity data. To fill this gap, this research aims to construct a link-level and hourly-based VOC emission inventory of HDDTs by combining fine-grained trajectory data, detailed vehicle specification information, localized emission factors, and underlying geographic information. The emission reduction potentials of different emission control scenarios were also evaluated. The research was conducted in Hebei Province, a predominant heavy industrial province in China. The results demonstrated that HDDTs with China 3 and below emission standards contributed to 74.85% of the HDDT generated VOC emissions, although they only accounted for 25.43% of the HDDTs operating on the road networks. The VOC emission characteristics of HDDTs were further explored at various temporal and spatial scales. Temporally, the difference between the maximum and minimum hourly VOC emissions reached 29.19%, and daily emission changes were considerably affected by holidays. Spatially, road segments with higher emission intensities and statistically significant emission hot spots were primarily distributed in intercity highways and national freeways, reflecting the contribution of high freight activity to the VOC emissions. Emission control scenario simulations demonstrated that improving HDDT emission standards can reduce VOC emissions by up to 80.06%. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the spatiotemporal patterns of VOC emissions from HDDTs and the effectiveness of emission reduction measures.

Abstract:The in-depth investigation of the high black carbon (BC) emission scenarios of heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) is a crucial step toward developing effective control strategies. Chassis dynamometer tests were conducted for three in-use HDDVs, namely, vehicle #1, #2, and #3, focusing on the instantaneous BC characterizations during multiple driving conditions, i.e., speed phases and acceleration intervals. BC emission was found to increase with positive acceleration, and high acceleration could result in instantaneous BC spikes. The total BC emissions during velocity-acceleration interval 15–60 km h −1 and 0.1–0.9 m s −2 contributed to 43.4 ± 10.2 % of the whole-cycle emissions, while the proportions of time spent in the velocity-acceleration interval to the whole cycle were 23.1 ± 7.6 %. The cold-start microscopic operating condition was assessed by the cold-start extra emissions (CSEEs). Under various pre-defined cold-start durations, the proportions of CSEEs in the total cycle emissions were 9.4–21.0 %, 0–9.1 %, and 6.8–39.4 % for vehicles #1, #2, and #3, respectively. The CSEEs exhibited an initial rise, followed by a plateau as the assumed cold-start durations extended. A uniform cold-start duration of 600 s was established based on the criterion that the relative standard deviation (RSD) of CSEEs during the plateau period was <10 %. We proposed that the updated cold-start duration can enhance the accuracy and consistency of cold-start corrections in emission inventory models.

Abstract:Some in-use China IV and China V heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems probably fail to mitigate nitrogen oxide (NO X ) emissions as expected. Meanwhile, these SCR-equipped HDDVs might emit excessive ammonia (NH 3 ). To better understand the NO X and NH 3 emissions from typical HDDVs in China, seventeen in-use vehicles with various emission-control technologies were tested by using laboratory chassis dynamometers. The results indicated that individual NO X and NH 3 emissions from HDDV fleets widely varied owing to differences in aftertreatment performance. China V and VI HDDVs with effectively functioning SCRs could substantially control their NO X emissions to be below the corresponding emission limits (i.e., 4.0 and 0.69 g/kWh for China V and China VI vehicles, respectively) but with a potential risk of high NH 3 emissions caused by diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) overdosing. Furthermore, higher vehicle speed and payload resulted in lower NO X emissions and possibly higher NH 3 emissions from HDDVs with effectively functioning SCRs, while higher NO X emissions from tampered- and non-SCR HDDVs. NO X emissions from China VI HDDVs were more sensitive to cold starts compared to China V and earlier vehicles, but there was no significant discrepancy in NH 3 emissions between cold- and hot-start tests.

Abstract:Mobile source emissions are some of the major causes of air pollution across the world and are associated with numerous adverse health impacts. China has implemented increasingly stringent emission standards over the past few decades, the most recent one being the sixth emission standard (China VI) first rolled out in 2019. The China VI standard places special emphasis on tightening limits for NOx emission and introduces remote monitoring of vehicles' On-board diagnostics (OBD) data to reduce emissions from diesel and gas-powered heavy-duty vehicles (HDV). This paper aims to establish a methodology to calculate HDV NOx emissions on an extended timescale, and under real-world operations. OBD data was collected and examined from 53 China VI diesel HDVs and 14 China V diesel HDVs, which found that the average NOx emission factors are 1.420 g/km and 3.894 g/km for the two samples respectively; this indicates that the implementation of China VI standard helps to significantly reduce NOx emission from HDVs. Combining the emission factors and calculated travel distances collected by OBD and vehicle sales data, the China VI emission standard is estimated to have resulted in 43,969 tons of NOx emission reduction by the end of 2020. With China announcing country-wide enforcement of the new standard in 2021, >1.7 million tons of NOx emission could be avoided by 2023 annually.
On-road Emission Factor Distributions of Individual Diesel Vehicles in and Around Beijing, China

Abstract:This paper reports findings of a recent field study that characterized the on-road emissions of individual diesel vehicles in and around Beijing, China during November and December of 2009. We successfully sampled 230 individual trucks on 4 major expressways around the city as well as 57 individual buses in the city using refined mobile chasing techniques and fast response instruments. Emission factors (EF) for carbon monoxide (CO), black carbon (BC) and particulate matter with diameters less than 0.5 mu m (PM0.5) are derived from the measurements, which are consistent with the results from laboratory dynamometer tests. The PM0.5 number emission factor distributions demonstrate consistent bimodal modes with peaks around 10 nm and 80 nm, while the mass emission factor distributions demonstrate a unimodal maximum around 110 nm for a majority of the trucks. The BC emissions are shown to be highly correlated with the mass emission of particles with 100-250 nm diameters, which are in good agreement with the results from previous studies. A number of important policy implications are discussed based on the results from this study. First, we identified "heavy emitters" in the on-road fleet we encountered, finding that 5% of diesel trucks in this sample are responsible for 50% of total BC emissions, and 20% of the trucks are responsible for 50% CO and PM0.5 number emissions, 60% PM0.5 mass emissions and over 70% of BC emissions. This suggests that emissions control programs should include identifying and removing heavy emitters from the road or improving their emissions. Second, the BC and PM0.5 number emission factors of trucks registered in regions outside Beijing are significantly higher than those of Beijing-registered trucks, suggesting that improving engine and fuel standards in Beijing alone is not sufficient in reducing the traffic-related air pollution in Beijing. Third, the significantly lower emissions from Euro IV and CNG buses compared to the Euro II and Euro III buses support that introducing clean-burning buses is an effective way to reduce the overall vehicle emissions for the pollutants studied. Fourth, our refined chasing method demonstrates a cost-effective approach to characterize the emissions from a large number of on-road diesel vehicles. Further studies with large sample sizes are critical to constructing more accurate mobile emission inventories to represent the on-road vehicle population. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:With the phase-in of China VI emission standard for heavy-duty vehicle (HDV), increasing numbers of HDVs are mandatorily equipped with on-board diagnostic (OBD) systems, providing opportunity to remote monitoring and supervision of emissions from in-use vehicles. However, the quality problem of OBD data is serious and lack of comprehensive assessment. In this study, the quality of nearly 1.6 billion OBD data from 38,692 China VI diesel HDVs travelling inside the Tangshan city of China was evaluated using a proposed framework which consists of validity indicators and signal transmission indicators. More than 24% of vehicles had overall invalidity rate over 20%, and only 0.4% of vehicles met the transmission period requirement of 1 Hz, indicating that the necessity and urgency for supervising and improving the OBD data quality. In particularly, several specific vehicle models were more prone to data quality problems, especially in the inability to determine the emission-related information. A real-time street-level NOx emission inventory was developed based on the OBD data with acceptable quality, using the direct monitoring and calculation of instantaneous emissions from each HDV. Compared to those from the top-down method which relied on gridded emissions and spatial allocation proxy schemes, the temporal and spatial characteristics of our results reflected the distribution and variations of actual freight demand in the real world. The developed real-world emission inventory will provide accurate support for the policy-making of precise control measures on HDVs.
