Abstract:Childhood maltreatment has been extensively linked to adult psychopathology, but the specificity and heterogeneity within this association remains inadequately understood. Research with non-Western samples also remains sparse. Using data from Chinese male adult drug users (<i>N</i> = 239) and utilizing both variable-centered and person-centered approaches, this study examined the link between childhood maltreatment (i.e., physical abuse and neglect, emotional abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse) and adult psychopathology (i.e., depressive symptoms, anxious symptoms, and severity of drug addiction). Variable-centered analyses indicated that when different types of maltreatment were considered in a single model, only emotional maltreatment stood out as a risk predictor for psychopathology, especially emotional abuse. Person-centered analyses identified three groups in which various types of maltreatment were configurated within individuals in distinctive patterns: the "rarely maltreated", the "multiply abused", and the "highly neglected" groups. Adult psychopathology varied across profiles. This study highlights the importance of utilizing both variable-centered and person-oriented approaches for a more complete delineation of the link between childhood maltreatment and adult psychopathology. Whereas variable-centered approaches are helpful for obtaining increased specificity, the person-oriented approaches are useful for tackling the heterogeneity. The findings have implications for interventions aimed at assisting drug users in Chinese cultural contexts.
Childhood maltreatment and adult aggression: The moderating role of neurocognitive ability and substance use

Abstract:Background: Achieving positive intervention outcomes for aggressive behaviour in adulthood is challenging. This difficulty is enhanced by the complex presentations of those engaging in such behaviours and the impact this has on their engagement with interventions. Objective: This study assessed the cumulative impact of childhood maltreatment, substance use, and neurocognitive ability (working memory, cognitive flexibility, decision making, response inhibition, and cognitive control) on aggressive behaviour in adulthood. Participants and setting: Adult participants (N = 179; 69 % female) recruited from the community, and clinical and forensic services, aged 18 to 81 (M = 40.5, SD = 15.9). Methods: Participants completed an online Qualtrics survey and remote neurocognitive testing via Inquisit. Results: We implemented an a priori approach, assessing three-way interactions between childhood maltreatment, substance use, neurocognitive ability, and aggression. No three-way interactions were significant. We then utilised a data-driven modelling approach, using automatic linear forward stepwise modelling to identify the most important variables for predicting aggression. Four were significant: physical maltreatment (b = 0.053, p < .001), drug use risk level (b = 0.015, p < .001), poorer response inhibition (b = 0.001, p = .016), and the interaction between poorer response inhibition and physical maltreatment (b = 0.205, p = .017). Conclusions: Physical maltreatment in childhood, drug use risk level, and response inhibition impact significantly on adult aggression, indicating a need for early intervention for children who have experienced maltreatment. Consideration should be given to how maltreatment in childhood may impact on ability to engage with interventions as an adult, particularly response inhibition difficulties that may hinder skill implementation.

Abstract:Childhood maltreatment is a rising social issue worldwide. Notably, childhood maltreatment is suggested to incur non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which is also considered as a profound public health concern, especially among Chinese youth and adolescence. Although the relationship between the two has been reported, little is known about the roles of psychological suzhi and inferiority complex in it. The current study aimed to examine the link between childhood maltreatment and NSSI among Chinese adolescents, and determine the mediating role of inferiority complex and the moderating effect of psychological suzhi. A total of 648 students (55.6% female; M age = 14.59) were guided to complete the self-report questionnaires regarding the mentioned study variables. Results demonstrated that childhood maltreatment was positively related with NSSI, and inferiority complex mediated such association. Furthermore, structural equation modeling (SEM) results showed that the effect of high childhood maltreatment on NSSI was weaker for adolescents who reported high psychological suzhi. In addition, the effect of inferiority on NSSI was also weaker for adolescents with high psychological suzhi. The current study demonstrated the indirect effects of inferiority complex and psychological suzhi in the link between childhood maltreatment and NSSI, advancing our understanding of the potential mechanism of such link.

Abstract:Although childhood maltreatment has been suggested to play an important role in developing Internet addiction among adolescents, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association. The present study investigated (a) the mediating role of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategy (MCERS) in the association between childhood maltreatment and Internet addiction, and (b) the moderating role of peer support in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and Internet addiction. A sample of 4163 Chinese adolescents (50.3 % females, M age = 14.25, SD = 1.53) were recruited. The moderated mediation model showed that MCERS mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and Internet addiction. Furthermore, the mediating process was moderated by peer support. Interestingly, peer support can protect adolescents from being affected by higher levels of MCERS while it displays limited protective effect when adolescents suffered from higher levels of childhood maltreatment. These findings indicate that reducing the MCERS and enhancing peer support can contribute to the alleviation of negative influences of childhood maltreatment on Internet addiction.

Abstract:Background: Drug addiction is a significant public health concern, and aggression is common among people with drug addiction. Despite mounting evidence showing that the Dark Triad is a risk factor for aggression, the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship are less known. This study tested the mediation effect of self-control in the association between the Dark Triad and aggression and whether this mediation was moderated by physical exercise. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two compulsory drug rehabilitation centers in Nanning, China. A convenience sample of 564 drug abstainers completed a questionnaire to assess their Dark Triad, self-control, aggression, and physical exercise levels. Mediation and moderation analyses were carried out in SPSS macro-PROCESS. Results: Self-control partially mediated the positive association between the Dark Triad and aggression. Physical exercise moderated the indirect effect of the Dark Triad on aggression via self-control, with the effect decreasing with the increase in physical exercise levels. Conclusions: This study offers fresh insights into the underlying mediating and moderating mechanisms between the Dark Triad and aggression. The findings provide important practical implications for future intervention and prevention programs to address aggression among drug abstainers, which may be realized through strengthening self-control and physical exercise.
'Can we predict aggression?'-Determining the predictors of aggression among individuals with substance use disorder in China undergoing enforced detoxification through machine learning

Abstract:Background: The general aggression model has shown that both individual and situational factors can predict aggression. However, past research has tended to discuss these two factors separately, which might lead to inconsistency. This study addresses this gap by examining the importance of each predictor of aggression in a Chinese compulsory drug treatment population and further explores the predictors of aggression in various substance use disorder populations. Method: Analyses were conducted using a sample of 894 male participants (mean = 38.30, SD = 8.38) in Chinese compulsory drug rehab. A machine learning model named LightGBM was employed to make predictions. We then used a game-theoretic explanatory technique, SHAP, to estimate the effect of predictors. Results: In the full-sample model, psychological security, parental conflict, and impulsivity were the top 3 predictors. Depression, childhood abuse, and alexithymia positively predicted aggression, whereas psychological security, family cohesion, and gratitude negatively predicted aggression. There were significant differences in the predictive effects of depressants and stimulants. Although the importance of predictors varied between drug-use groups, several individual and situational factors were consistently the most important predictors. Limitations: All participants in this study were male, and the data were acquired through self-reports from the participants. Domestic and nondomestic aggression are not distinguished. Additionally, our findings cannot support causal conclusions. Conclusion: This study tested a series of classical theories of the predictors of aggression in China's compulsory drug treatment context and extended the ideas of the GAM to various substance use disorder groups. The findings have important implications for aggression treatment.

Abstract:BackgroundThe higher impulsivity of offenders in prison is a challenge for prison intervention. Childhood maltreatment, one of the factors closely related to the generation and development of impulsivity, is also prevalent in offenders. Therefore, it is critical to investigate the underlying paths that generate impulsivity in offenders who have experienced childhood abuse.ObjectiveTargeting positive protective factors, this study aimed to probe the mediating roles of self-compassion and cognitive reappraisal in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and impulsivity in offenders.MethodsThe participants included 2643 offenders, 1534 males and 1109 females. Each participant completed the appropriate questionnaires to measure childhood maltreatment, impulsivity, self-compassion, and cognitive reappraisal. The PROCESS macro was used to perform the mediation analysis and hypothesis testing.ResultsThe findings showed that childhood maltreatment indirectly affected offenders' impulsivity through self-compassion and cognitive reappraisal, and the mediating effect of self-compassion was stronger than that of cognitive reappraisal. Further analyses found that sexual abuse indirectly affected impulsivity through self-compassion, and the remaining types of childhood maltreatment were associated with impulsivity in indirect pathways through self-compassion and cognitive reappraisal.ConclusionsThe results suggest that reinforcing practical training in self-compassion and cognitive reappraisal, especially the former, might facilitate the reduction of impulsive symptoms among offenders with backgrounds of childhood maltreatment.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the role of parental aggression and parental childhood maltreatment experience in the maltreatment of children in Zhejiang Province, eastern China. The study sites were two urban and two rural schools. Children aged ten to 16 years and their parents completed separate questionnaires, which included: parental childhood maltreatment; parental aggressive tendency; and maltreatment of children. Questionnaires were completed by 611 parents and 821 children. Fifty‐eight per cent of parents reported maltreatment of their children. Higher parental aggression scores were associated with an increased risk for all types of child maltreatment (relative risk ratios (RRRs) or odds ratios (ORs) ranged from 1.06–1.07 for each point higher on the aggression scale). Parental childhood maltreatment was significantly associated with an increased risk of moderate/severe physical maltreatment of children (OR = 1.80 (1.08, 3.00)); parental aggression was an explanatory factor for this association. Parental childhood maltreatment was positively associated with emotional maltreatment of children (OR = 1.89 (1.27, 2.83)). This was partly explained by parental aggression. In conclusion, high levels of child maltreatment were admitted by parents in China, suggesting the need for parenting education. Parents with a higher aggressive tendency were more likely to maltreat children. Parental aggressive tendency was an explanatory factor for the intergenerational transmission of maltreatment, indicating the possibility of identifying parents' aggressive tendencies for early prevention. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.‘Explore[s] the role of parental aggression and parental childhood maltreatment experience in the maltreatment of children in Zhejiang Province’Key Practitioner Messages Child maltreatment of all types is common in China. A Preliminary Investigation of a Conceptual Model Describing the Associations Between Childhood Maltreatment and Alcohol Use Problems

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Childhood maltreatment has been linked to numerous adverse outcomes in adulthood, including problem substance use. However, not all individuals exposed to childhood maltreatment develop substance use problems, indicating the role of other factors in influencing this outcome. Past work suggests that adverse early life experiences, including childhood maltreatment, lead to neurobiological changes in frontolimbic functions that, in turn, result in altered stress and reward responses, heightened impulsivity, affect dysregulation, and, ultimately, increased risk for maladaptive behaviors such as substance use. The aim of this preliminary investigation using cross-sectional data was to test associations between these factors in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and alcohol use problems in a sample of emerging adults. Methods: Emerging adults (18–30 years old) who identified as regular drinkers (i.e., drinking at least 2–4 times in the past month) were recruited from a crowd-sourcing platform (Prolific) as well as community samples. Participants completed online standardized questionnaires assessing reward sensitivity and responsiveness, impulsivity, emotion regulation, and alcohol consequences. Results: Path analyses demonstrated good fit for the data (SRMR = 0.057, RMSEA = 0.096, 90% CI [0.055, 0.142], CFI = 0.957). Childhood maltreatment was associated with reward responsiveness (β = −0.026, Z = −4.222, p < 0.001) and emotion dysregulation (β = 0.669, Z = 9.633, p < 0.001), which in turn was associated with urgency and, subsequently, alcohol consequences (β = 0.758, Z = 7.870, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Although these findings are preliminary, the current study is one of the first to test a comprehensive model addressing the relationship between childhood maltreatment and alcohol use problems. The findings have the potential to inform treatment strategies that target motivation and goal-directed action for reducing and managing consequences associated with childhood maltreatment. Future research should test the model using longitudinal data to address the limitations of a cross-sectional study and assess temporal associations between constructs.

Abstract:This study examined the mediating effect of cognitive impulsivity and the moderating effect of dispositional mindfulness in the relations between peer victimization and adolescent proactive and reactive aggressive behaviors. The sample included 2477 Chinese adolescents (51.43% boys and 48.57% girls; M age =12.23 years, SD = 1.65). The results of path analysis showed that peer victimization was significantly related to both proactive and reactive aggressive behaviors. Cognitive impulsivity mediated in the relations between peer victimization and proactive and reactive aggressive behaviors. Dispositional mindfulness buffered against the relations between peer victimization and proactive aggressive behavior, and between peer victimization and cognitive impulsivity. The results further showed that the indirect effect of cognitive impulsivity was more salient when there were lower levels of dispositional mindfulness. This study revealed the mediating and moderating mechanism between peer victimization and aggressive behavior from the perspective of the control model of the criminal lifestyle theory and has important implications for preventing and reducing adolescent aggressive behaviors.

Abstract:Pediatric interstitial lung disease comprises a diverse group of rare conditions characterized by an infiltrative process, abnormal gas exchange, and restrictive lung disease. Although the disorder is similar to its adult counterpart, its course is complicated by the continued need for lung growth and differentiation in infants and children. Knowledge about the pathogenesis, prognosis, and treatment of pediatric interstitial lung disease is limited. Investigators are focusing on defining the cellular mediators of the interstitial damage and describing the role of viral infections in and possible genetic predisposition to interstitial lung disease. Clinicians continue to define the various types of interstitial lung disease and to evaluate the roles of bronchoalveolar lavage, radiography, and biopsy in diagnosis. Together, investigators are working toward the development of specific, targeted therapy that will reduce the significant morbidity and mortality seen in pediatric interstitial lung disease.

There is a wealth of evidence to suggest that childhood maltreatment is a major risk factor contributing to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among adolescents. However, how and under what conditions childhood maltreatment is related to NSSI remains largely unclear. This study examined the indirect effect of depressive symptoms in the relation between childhood maltreatment and non-suicidal self-injury, as well as the moderating role of cognitive reappraisal and emotion reactivity in those associations. A sample of 1,984 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 12.84, SD = 1.27, 47.9% girls) completed self-report questionnaires. The results of path analysis showed that childhood maltreatment was significantly related to NSSI and that depressive symptoms play an indirect effect in the relation between them. Cognitive reappraisal mitigated the effect of childhood maltreatment on depressive symptoms, and emotion reactivity strengthened the effect of depressive symptoms on non-suicidal self-injury. The results further showed that the indirect effect of depressive symptoms was more prominent for youths with lower levels of cognitive reappraisal and greater emotion reactivity. Interventions that enhance cognitive reappraisal and reduce emotion reactivity may interrupt the pathway from childhood maltreatment to NSSI via depressive symptoms.

Abstract:When the histological material from 35 examples of carcinoma of the gallbladder was reviewed, three specimens were found to show xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis as well as the tumour, suggesting that these two lesions are associated with each other. This is important because xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis can mimic carcinoma, and there is potential for diagnostic confusion.
Association between longitudinal patterns of child maltreatment experiences and adolescent substance use

Abstract:Background: Although there is a well-established link between child maltreatment and adolescent substance use, it remains unclear if and how longitudinal patterns of maltreatment experiences are associated with substance use in adolescence. Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine how distinct patterns of longitudinal maltreatment experiences are associated with adolescent substance use. Participants and setting: The participants were 899 adolescents from the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN). Methods: We conducted repeated measures latent class analysis (RMLCA) to identify patterns of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect from birth to age 17 and their relations to tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use at age 18. Results: RMLCA identified three physical abuse classes (Stable low physical abuse; School age peak physical abuse; Physical abuse primarily in infancy/toddlerhood), two sexual abuse classes (Stable no/low sexual abuse; School age peak sexual abuse), and three neglect classes (High neglect in childhood; Neglect primarily in infancy/toddlerhood; Neglect primarily at school age). Adolescents in the school age peak physical abuse class showed greater alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana use, compared to other physical abuse classes. Similarly, adolescents in the school age peak sexual abuse class showed greater substance use than those in the stable no/low sexual abuse class. Lastly, adolescents in the neglect primarily in infancy/toddlerhood class showed significantly less substance use than those in the other two neglect classes. Conclusions: Findings highlight the importance of early intervention and ongoing maltreatment prevention.
Longitudinal Relations Between Child Maltreatment in Families and Psychological Maltreatment by Teachers: The Mediating Roles of Internalizing and Externalizing Problems Among Chinese Children

Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. Relationships in the family (e.g., child maltreatment in families) and school environments (e.g., psychological maltreatment by teachers) are influential in children's socialization, but how family and teacher–student domains mutually affect each other and which mediating mechanisms are involved in cross-domain spillover at the within-person level are not well understood. This study examined the bidirectional relations between child maltreatment in families and psychological maltreatment by teachers and whether internalizing and externalizing problems functioned as mediators between them after separating between-person effects from within-person effects. A total of 4270 Chinese children (54.9% boys; Mage = 9.92; SD = 0.51) participated in a five-wave longitudinal study with 6-month intervals. Results from random intercept cross-lagged panel modeling mainly found that: (1) Child maltreatment in families predicted psychological maltreatment by teachers, and vice versa; (2) child maltreatment in families influenced psychological maltreatment by teachers through externalizing problems; child maltreatment in families affected the likelihood of psychological maltreatment by teachers via the sequential effect from internalizing problems to externalizing problems at the within-person level; and (3) internalizing and externalizing problems mediated the longitudinal relations from psychological maltreatment by teachers to child maltreatment in families separately. Findings demonstrated bidirectional spillover effects in the domains of family and teacher-student relationships, suggesting that children may be trapped in a vicious cycle of negative relationships through internalizing and externalizing problems, either directly or indirectly. Thus, these two domains influence each other through children's internalizing and externalizing problems. Interventions aimed at addressing maltreatment should include family, school, and individual (i.e., internalizing and externalizing problems) components to prevent a downward spiral.

Childhood maltreatment and substance use risk: A moderated mediation model of autonomic reactivity and distress tolerance

Abstract:Background/aims: The link between child maltreatment (CM) and substance use (SU) in young adulthood is established. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) division of the autonomic nervous system may mediate this link. However, less is known on the indirect link between CM and SU via SNS functioning. Due to individual variability in the link between SNS functioning and SU risk, we aimed to examine the moderating role of distress tolerance (DT). Methods: A longitudinal sample of 118 young adults (YAs) from a low socioeconomic status background were assessed twice (between 9 and 12 months apart). CM, DT, and galvanic skin response (GSR) stress reactivity were measured during the initial study visit, while SU was assessed at both timepoints. Stress reactivity was assessed by measuring the GSR reactivity during a stress task. We tested the indirect associations between CM and changes in SU problems via GSR stress reactivity, and the moderation effects of DT on these indirect associations. A mediation model in the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework was then followed by a moderated mediation model to analyze these data. Results: YA's stress reactivity mediated the association between CM and alcohol use problems, and this indirect effect was weaker among YAs who had higher levels of DT. This pattern did not emerge with drug use problems. Conclusions: Findings suggest that intervention and prevention efforts for SU outcomes should consider incorporating strategies that increase at-risk individuals' levels of DT. Providing strategies to help individuals stem their stress reactivity may reduce their risk for alcohol use.
The effects of childhood maltreatment on adolescent non-suicidal self-injury behavior: mediating role of impulsivity

Abstract:Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) severely challenges mental health in adolescents. Childhood maltreatment experience acts as high-risk factor for adolescents to engage in NSSI behaviors. On the other hand, impulsivity or loss of control sets the threshold for NSSI execution. Here we examined the effects of childhood maltreatment on adolescent NSSI-related clinical outcomes and the potential role of impulsivity. Methods: We assessed the clinical data of 160 hospitalized NSSI adolescents and recruited 64 age-matched healthy subjects as a control group. The clinical symptoms of NSSI are expressed by the NSSI frequency, depression, and anxiety measured by the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Childhood maltreatment and impulsivity were assessed with Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. Results: The results showed that when compared to HC group, NSSI group is more likely to experience childhood maltreatment. Notably, NSSI group with Childhood maltreatment accompanies higher trait impulsivity and exacerbated clinical outcomes, such as NSSI frequency, depression and anxiety symptoms. Mediation analyses indicated that the association between childhood maltreatment and NSSI-related clinical outcomes was partially explained by impulsivity. Conclusion: We found that NSSI adolescents have a higher proportion of childhood maltreatment. Impulsivity plays a mediating role between childhood maltreatment and NSSI behaviors.

Abstract:Background Child maltreatment can increase the risk of lifetime non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal self-injury (SSI), but there is limited knowledge regarding the differences of potentially psychological mechanisms between NSSI with and without SSI. Methods Participants, 3918 community-based Chinese young men aged 18–34 years in Chengdu, were included in this study. We investigated the association between depression, anxiety, psychosis, child maltreatment, adulthood traumatic events, impulsivity, alcohol dependence, drug abuse, and lifetime of NSSI among participants with and without SSI. Parallel mediation analysis was utilized to explore the mediators for the relation between child maltreatment and NSSI. Results The prevalence of lifetime NSSI was 6.1 % (95 % CI: 5.4 %–6.9 %) among young men. Anxiety and impulsivity partially mediated the effect of child maltreatment on NSSI either with (indirect effect: 51.2 %) or without SSI (indirect effect: 34.3 %). Depression was independently and significantly associated with only NSSI but not with NSSI+SSI. Alcohol dependence and psychosis were independently and significantly associated with NSSI+SSI and mediated the effect of child maltreatment on NSSI+SSI. Limitations The cross-sectional survey data limits the robustness of the proof to the causal relationships. Conclusions Anxiety and impulsivity are associated with NSSI either with or without SSI and partially mediate the effect of child maltreatment on NSSI. Depression is associated with only NSSI, while alcohol dependence and psychosis are only associated with NSSI+SSI. It could be crucial to improve treatment and recovery of alcohol dependence and psychosis for preventing young men engaged in NSSI from attempting SSI.

Childhood abuse and craving in methamphetamine-dependent individuals: the mediating role of alexithymia

Abstract:Individuals with a history of childhood abuse (CA, including neglect and abuse by caregivers before the age of 18 years) have more severe substance dependence problems than those without a history of childhood abuse. However, whether a history of CA exacerbates craving and the mechanism of this effect remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to explore the role of alexithymia in the effects of CA on craving in a large sample of methamphetamine-dependent individuals based on latent vulnerability theory. A total of 324 methamphetamine-dependent individuals who met DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorder were recruited. CA, alexithymia, and craving data were collected from the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20, and the Obsessive Compulsive Drug Use Scale, respectively. t tests and ANCOVA were conducted to compare variables between the CA and non-CA groups, while partial correlation and mediation analyses were conducted to examine the potential mediating role of alexithymia in the relationship between CA and craving. Abused methamphetamine-dependent individuals reported higher levels of craving and higher levels of alexithymia than those of non-abused methamphetamine-dependent individuals. Alexithymia partially mediated the link between CA and craving, especially the effect of CA on craving frequency was fully mediated by alexithymia. Our findings reveal that a history of childhood abuse has a lasting effect on craving in stimulant-dependent individuals, and alexithymia contributes to some extent to the severity of substance abuse problems in abused methamphetamine-dependent individuals.
