Abstract:In this paper we present mathematical and physical models to be used in the analysis of the problem of intonation of musical instruments such as guitars, mandolins and the like, i.e., we study how to improve the tuning on these instruments. This analysis begins by designing the placement of frets on the fingerboard according to mathematical rules and the assumption of an ideal string, but becomes more complicated when one includes the effects of deformation of the string and inharmonicity due to other string characteristics. As a consequence of these factors, perfect intonation of all the notes on the instrument can never be achieved, but complex compensation procedures are introduced and studied to minimize the problem. To test the validity of these compensation procedures, we have performed extensive measurements using standard monochord sonometers and other basic acoustical devices, confirming the correctness of our theoretical models. In particular, these experimental activities can be easily integrated into standard acoustics courses and labs, and can become a more advanced version of basic experiments with monochords and sonometers.

Design of a fretboard using the stiff string equation

Abstract:Guitar fretboards are designed based on the equation of the ideal string. That is, it neglects several factors as nonlinearities and bending stiffness of the strings. Due to this fact, intonation of guitars along the whole neck is not perfect, and guitars have right tuning just in an \emph{average} sense. There are commercially available fretboards that differ from the traditional design. (One example is the \cite{patent} by the Company True Temperament AB, where each fretboard is made using CNC processes.) As a final application of this work we would like to redesign the fretboard layout considering the effects of bending stiffness. The main goal of this project is to analyze the differences between the differences in the solution for vibrations of the ideal string and a stiff string. These differences should lead to changes in the fret distribution for a guitar, and, hopefully improve the overall intonation of the instrument. We will start analyzing the ideal string equation and after a good understanding of this analytical solution we will proceed with the, more complex, stiff equation. Topics like separation of variables, Fourier transforms, and Perturbation analysis might prove useful during the course of this project

On inharmonicity in bass guitar strings with application to tapered and lumped constructions

Abstract:Abstract In this study, the inharmonicity of bass guitar strings with and without areas of lowered and raised mass near the saddle is studied. Using a very high sample rate of over 900 kHz enabled finite difference time domain simulation to be applied for strings that simultaneously have nonzero stiffness and linear density which varies along the length of the string. Results are compared to experiments on specially constructed strings. Perturbation theory is demonstrated to be sufficiently accurate (and much more computationally efficient) for practical design purposes in reducing inharmonicity. The subject of inharmonicity is well known in pianos but has not been studied extensively in bass guitar strings. Here, the inharmonicity is found to be low in the lowest (open string) pitch on the five string bass guitar ( $${B}_0$$ B 0 ) given typical standard construction. Conversely, the inharmonicity is high (around 100 cents at the 10th partial) when that string is sounded when stopped at the 12th fret and very high (around 100 cents at the 6th partial) when that string is stopped at the 21st fret. Bass guitar strings were constructed with three different constructions (standard, tapered and lumped) in order to demonstrate how incorporating a lump of raised mass near the saddle can achieve close to zero inharmonicity for the lower frequency partials. This also has potential in terms of improving the use of higher fret numbers for musical harmony (reducing beating) and also in controlling pitch glide that has, with some exceptions, often been attributed solely to nonlinear behaviour.

Abstract:A new hemostatic agent which can be applied locally on diffuse bleeding of the dura or of the brain has been used in 35 cases --12 cases on the dura mater; --6 cases on cerebral traumatic laceration; --15 cases in astrocytomas grade III and IV; --2 cases in cerebral AVM. This new material is made of sheets of natural collagen and is resorbable. The same kind of material is used in U.S.A. under the name of Avitene. The results have been very encouraging when compared to the use of oxycel. The authors think that the result can be more striking when a powder will be added to the sheet.

Abstract:Musical instrument making is often considered a mysterious form of art, its secrets still escaping scientific quantification. There is not yet a formula to make a good instrument, so historical examples are regarded as the pinnacle of the craft. This is the case of Stradivari's violins or Torres guitars that serve as both models and examples to follow. Geometric copies of these instruments are still the preferred way of building new ones, yet reliably making acoustic copies of them remains elusive. One reason for this is that the variability of the wood used for instruments makes for a significant source of uncertainty-no two pieces of wood are the same. In this article, using state-of-the-art methodologies, we show a method for matching the vibrational response of two guitar top plates made with slightly different materials. To validate our method, we build two guitar soundboards: one serving as a reference and the second acting as a copy to which we apply model-predicted geometry variations. The results are twofold. Firstly, we can experimentally validate the predictive capabilities of our numerical model regarding geometry changes. Secondly, we can significantly reduce the deviation between the two plates by these precisely predicted geometry variations. Although applied to guitars here, the methodology can be extended to other instruments, e.g. violins, in a similar fashion. The implications of such a methodology for the craft could be far-reaching by turning instrument-making more into a science than artistic craftsmanship and paving the way to accurately copy historical instruments of a high value.
Influence of the player on the dynamics of the electric guitar

Abstract:The sound of the electric guitar is strongly dependent on the string vibration. Where a mode of the structure coincides with a mode of the fretted string, coupling between the string and structure occurs at that "deadspot." The coupling significantly lowers decay time, leading to the name [Paté, Le Carrou, and Fabre (2014). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 135(5), 3045-3055]. But how the guitarist affects the dynamic behavior of the structure by grasping the neck, holding the instrument with the strap, or laying the instrument on his/her thigh remains to be investigated. This is the aim of the paper. Two methods are proposed to identify the modal parameters of the electric guitar structure, either by a classical modal analysis in simulated playing configuration, or by an operational modal analysis in real playing configuration. For this latter method, modal parameters are identified from dynamic measurements performed when each string is plucked. Both methods are compared and allow one to quantify the modal frequency modification and the added modal damping, which depend on the player's body-part in contact with the structure and on the modal shape considered. Consequences of these modal parameters on the modeled sound show that the player can increase the decay time close to a deadspot.

Abstract:The debate regarding the use of antibiotic feed additives in food-producing animals has intensified in recent years fueled by activist groups opposed to conventional animal agriculture that use this issue, as well as those of food safety, animal welfare and environmental pollution to further their cause, scare the public and ultimately impose their views on society. In the author’s opinion, the goal of some of the most extreme activist groups is to convert the entire society to vegetarianism. The media in general and some politicians have seized the opportunity to gain higher ratings and more votes by sensationalized reporting and legislative proposals to restrict their use in the USA (HR962; S-549). In spite of more than 50 years of use and an endless search for a “smoking gun”, to the author’s knowledge, to this date, not a single human fatality has been linked directly and unequivocally to the use of antibiotic feed additives in food animal production. Contrary to public perception, the continued use of antibiotic feed additives is beneficial for both, animal and human health. As detailed in this article, there are numerous scientifically documented benefits derived directly from their use such as the prevention and control of enteric diseases, enhanced food safety, improved animal welfare, preservation and less contamination of the environment, improved efficiency of production and lower cost of production resulting in lower prices for the consumers who can continue to enjoy an abundant supply of safe and nutritious food products of animal origin at an affordable price.

Abstract:Novel 2‐oxo‐pyrazine‐3‐carboxamide‐yl nucleoside analogues and their epimers were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their activities against influenza A viruses H1N1 and H3N2 in Madin‐Darby canine kidney cells. All the compounds showed low cytotoxicities in these anti‐influenza tests. One of the epimers, 4‐[(1S, 3R, 4R, 7R)‐7‐hydroxy‐1‐(hydroxymethyl)‐2,5‐dioxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptan‐3‐yl]‐3‐oxo‐3,4‐dihydropyrazine‐2‐carboxamide 8a, with high antiviral activities (IC50 = 7.41, 5.63 μm for H3N2 and H1N1, respectively) and remarkable low cytotoxicity (TC50 > 200 μm), has great potential for further development as a novel anti‐influenza A agent. Molecular docking of compound 8a with RNA‐dependent RNA polymerase was performed to understand the binding mode between these inhibitors and the active site of RdRp and to rationalize some SARs.
Targeted detuning aiming for sensory pleasantness – A case study of Pipe Organs and Accordionsâ ̃

Abstract:Two simultaneously sounding tones differing in frequency by a few Hertz generate a waveform, whose amplitude modulation is related to the psychoacoustic quantity "fluctuation strength". In accordance with the widely accepted definitions of consonance, any deviation from a pure interval (a dyad, whose tone frequencies yield a frequency ratio of small integers) generates dissonance. Nevertheless, imperfect intonation is a common occurrence in musical performance. Recent publications have demonstrated that slightly detuned dyads are perceived as more pleasant than their corresponding pure intervals. Some instruments even contain a separate set of tone generators that are intentionally detuned to a slight degree. Examples of instruments that exhibit this feature include various flat and sharp Celeste ranks in the Pipe Organ or the Accordion. The resulting undulating sounds are pictured as pleasant, shimmering, or "celestial". This work demonstrates that the tonal timbre of two harmonic complex tones, whose fundamental frequencies slightly deviate from ratios of small integers, can undergo notable periodic changes within a beat cycle while maintaining sensory pleasantness. The acceptable limit of detuning unison intervals is related to the frequency difference limen, as evidenced by data on CELESTE ranks in Pipe Organs and Accordions tuned by instrument builders. This allows for the derivation of general tuning progression rules for Celeste ranks in Pipe Organs and Accordions, which can be used to increase the auditory pleasantness of dyads despite their slight detuning.

Abstract:Musical acoustics is an interesting sub-field of physics which is usually able to engage students in a dual perspective, by combining science and art together. The physics principles involved in most musical instruments can be easily demonstrated with standard laboratory equipment and can become part of lecture or lab activities. In particular, we will show in this paper how to simulate a guitar using a conventional sonometer, in relation to the problem of the instrument intonation, i.e., how to obtain correctly tuned notes on a guitar or similar string instruments.

Abstract:The acoustical characteristics of the guitar depend on the instrument makers' choices concerning the geometry, the material and the assembly techniques. The aim of this paper is to define criteria permitting the discrimination of guitars according to their acoustic characteristics. These criteria can be used, for example, by instrument makers to test the repeatability of their making process. Evaluation of the guitars' quality from this categorization is beyond the scope of this paper. A low-cost portable system allowing bridge admittance measurements has been designed and used on 4 groups of classical guitars, each being composed of about 10 similar instruments. A statistical study shows that the tested instruments can clearly be differentiated according to (1) the modal parameters associated to the first 2 vibroacoustic modes (air mode A0 and first soundboard mode T1), and to (2) a 'merit indicator', close to the one defined by C. Barlow (Proc.I.O.A., vol 19, Pt 5, 1997, 69-78). This 'merit indicator' is computed from the mean value of the bridge admittance and an estimation of the critical frequency of the soundboard.

Exploring design variations of the Titian Stradivari violin using a finite element model.

Abstract:Because violins are traditionally hand-crafted using wood, each one is unique. This makes the design of repeatable experiments studying some aspects of its dynamic behavior unfeasible. To tackle this problem, an adjustable finite element (FE) model of a violin soundbox using the geometry and behavior of the "Titian" Stradivari was developed in this paper. The model is parametric, so its design and material properties can be varied for before/after comparisons in both the frequency and time domains. Systematic simulations revealed that f-holes set lower in the top, as seen in some Stradivari violins (e.g., Hellier, Cremonese), raise the frequency of the Hill (a feature in the bridge mobility); conversely, the higher set f-holes seen in some Guarneri violins (e.g., Principe Doria) reduces such frequency. This agrees with the widespread belief that the high-frequency response of Stradivari violins is stronger than Guarneri violins. Changes in the response of the system were quantified once each part of the design was added, calling attention to the influence of the blocks on the behavior of signature modes, especially in the frequency and shape of B1 +. A text file of the FE model is available in supplemental materials; it runs in ANSYS (free version), for which guides are included.

Abstract:American Journal of Physics, Volume 90, Issue 7, Page 487-493, July 2022. We have considered the vibration of various types of pinned guitar strings and have investigated the deviation of the partials from integer multiples of the string's fundamental vibration frequency. We measured the inharmonicity parameter B and compared it to a direct calculation based on a model equation. We generally found very good agreement between the two determinations of B for monofilament strings, but perhaps not surprisingly, we find rather poor agreement for wound strings. Furthermore, we show that the methodology used to carry out this experiment can easily serve as the basis for an upper division physics laboratory on physical acoustics including a more thorough investigation of the classical wave equation in a real-world application.
Time-domain numerical modeling of brass instruments including nonlinear wave propagation, viscothermal losses, and lips vibration

Abstract:A time-domain numerical modeling of brass instruments is proposed. On one hand, outgoing and incoming waves in the resonator are described by the Menguy-Gilbert model, which incorporates three key issues: nonlinear wave propagation, viscothermal losses, and a variable section. The non-linear propagation is simulated by a TVD scheme well-suited to non-smooth waves. The fractional derivatives induced by the viscothermal losses are replaced by a set of local-in-time memory variables. A splitting strategy is followed to couple optimally these dedicated methods. On the other hand, the exciter is described by a one-mass model for the lips. The Newmark method is used to integrate the nonlinear ordinary differential equation so-obtained. At each time step, a coupling is performed between the pressure in the tube and the displacement of the lips. Finally, an extensive set of validation tests is successfully completed. In particular, self-sustained oscillations of the lips are simulated by taking into account the nonlinear wave propagation in the tube. Simulations clearly indicate that the nonlinear wave propagation has a major influence on the timbre of the sound, as expected. Moreover, simulations also highlight an influence on playing frequencies, time envelopes and on the playability of the low frequencies in the case of a variable lips tension.

[Circumferential subannular grafting technique in tympanoplasty: preliminary results].

Abstract:OBJECTIVES We evaluated the preliminary results of the circumferential subannular grafting technique, which has been proposed as a modification of the standard underlay method. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty patients (15 females, 5 males; mean age 32.4 years; range 13 to 65 years) with chronic otitis media were operated on with the use of the circumferential subannular grafting technique. The mean follow-up was 13.6 months (range 1 to 36). RESULTS No complications were encountered related to graft survival or the external ear canal. The mean air-bone gap was 25.2+/-8.6 dB preoperatively and 15.8+/-7.4 dB postoperatively, with a mean decrease of 10+/-7.9 dB. CONCLUSION Circumferential subannular grafting was found to be effective in restoring tympanic membrane perforations in all the quadrands. The main limitations of the technique are the need for surgical skills and the necessity of an intact or remnant manubrium mallei.
Perceptual evaluation of bracewood and soundboard wood variations on the preference of a steel-string acoustic guitar

Abstract:The wood of the spruce tree (Picea spp.) has been valued for centuries as an ideal soundboard for stringed instruments due to its material acoustic properties. There is large variability in these properties between individual trees of the same species and even within an individual log. It stands to reason that this variability would produce audible differences in the sound quality of otherwise identical musical instruments. Furthermore, there may be a suite of physical characteristics of the soundboard that would result in optimal sound quality for a given design. Nine steel-string guitars of the same model were produced. The guitars varied only in two parameters: the density and Young's modulus of the soundboard and bracewood. This variability was representative of the range of wood currently produced by Pacific Rim Tonewoods. A short music sequence was used for a pairwise preference evaluation in a listening test. The results suggested that, for this particular model (the Taylor 814ce Grand Auditorium), the low density and Young's modulus of the soundboard and bracewood had a positive impact on the sound quality. More generally, these results underscore the importance of integrating a given design with the physical characteristics of the component wood.
Influence of Irregular Patterns in the Inharmonicity of Piano‐Tone Partials upon Tuning Practice

Abstract:It has been shown that it is characteristic of piano tones to have partials that are slightly higher in frequency than harmonics would be. The departure from a harmonic relationship is termed inharmonicity of the partials. It has been shown also that the inharmonic relationships of the partials influence the tuning of the octaves of the piano. The result is a departure from the equally tempered scale with the treble strings tuned sharp and the bass strings tuned flat. The octaves are thus stretched from the true-octave relationship. This paper discusses the influence of the string-to-string patterns of inharmonicity upon piano tuning within the octave. It is the goal of the piano tuner to tune each string so as to produce smoothly increasing progressions of beat rates between two tones in a given musical interval as the tones move up the scale. This goal can be achieved in practice if the partial-inharmonicity pattern is essentially the same for each string or if there is a smooth change in the pattern from one string group to the next. The departure from “ideal,” especially in spinets, is discussed and demonstrated.

A parametric model and estimation techniques for the inharmonicity and tuning of the piano

Abstract:Inharmonicity of piano tones is an essential property of their timbre that strongly influences the tuning, leading to the so-called octave stretching. It is proposed in this paper to jointly model the inharmonicity and tuning of pianos on the whole compass. While using a small number of parameters, these models are able to reflect both the specificities of instrument design and tuner's practice. An estimation algorithm is derived that can run either on a set of isolated note recordings, but also on chord recordings, assuming that the played notes are known. It is applied to extract parameters highlighting some tuner's choices on different piano types and to propose tuning curves for out-of-tune pianos or piano synthesizers.
Coupled Vibro-Acoustic Model of the Titian Stradivari Violin

Abstract:The instruments of Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737) are still considered the finest in the world and have set the standard for violin quality that has yet to be exceeded by a modern luthier. To determine the relationship between the sound of the instrument and its structure and material properties a vibro-acoustic finite element model was developed for the 1715 Titian Stradivari violin. The structural model was created by measuring the structural geometry and density from CT scans of the actual instrument. The predicted structural modes were correlated with experimental modal data on the 1715 violin and updated accordingly. The correlated structural modes were then projected onto the acoustic envelope. The vibro-acoustic transfer function between force input at the violin bridge and acoustic pressure response 1.2 m away was predicted. These results were compared to experimental radiativity measurements made on the actual instrument. It was shown that including structural and acoustic damping characteristics are important to accurately predict the vibro-acoustic behavior of the Titian Stradivari violin. Predicted structural modal frequencies were all within 5 % of the experimental data, while the main acoustic mode was within 7 %. The predicted radiativity magnitude was within 1.5 dB for all mode peaks. This is the first comprehensive analytical vibro-acoustic model of a Stradivari instrument and can be used to determine how structural modifications effect violin sound quality.

Abstract:Research show that the vibrations of the strings and the radiated sound of the solid body electric guitar depend on the vibrational behavior of its structure in addition to the extended electronic chain. In this regard, most studies focused on the vibro-mechanical properties of the neck of the electric guitar and neglected the coupling of the vibrating strings with the neck and the solid body of the instrument. Therefore, the aim of the study was to understand how the material properties of the solid body could affect the stiffness and vibration damping of the whole instrument when comparing ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) and walnut (Juglans regia L.) wood. In the electric guitar with identical components, higher modal frequencies were confirmed in the structure of the instrument when the solid body was made of the stiffer ash wood. The use of ash wood for the solid body of the instrument due to coupling effect resulted in a beneficial reduction in the vibration damping of the neck of the guitar. The positive effect of the low damping of the solid body of the electric guitar made of ash wood was also confirmed in the vibration of the open strings. In the specific case of free-free vibration mode, the decay time was longer for higher harmonics of the E2, A2 and D3 strings.
