Abstract:This paper confirms that Cu9S5 sub‐nanowires (Cu9S5 SNWs) achieving full exposure of the active sites. Both experimental and in situ characterize results reveal that Cu9S5 SNWs combined with size effect and synergistic action greatly promote the reduction of nitrate to ammonia. The flow battery device assembled with Cu9S5 SNWs as electrode materials successfully realizing the conversion of NO3− into NH3 with high added value while generating electricity. The sub‐nanometer is a key feature size in materials science. Unlike single‐atom and nanomaterials, size effects and inter‐component cooperative actions in sub‐nanomaterials will effective on its performance is more significant. Here, 0.95 nm ordered arrangement Cu9S5 sub‐nanowires (Cu9S5 SNWs) are synthesized through the co‐assembly effect of inorganic nuclei (Cu9S5) and clusters (phosphotungstic acid‐PTA), achieving a significant increase in the specific surface area of the sample and ≈100% atomic exposure rate, which is the key to its high catalytic activity. PTA clusters not only act as a "charge transfer station" to accelerate the inter‐component electron transfer process, but also facilitate the dissociation of water and provide more hydrogen protons, thus dramatically facilitating the electrocatalytic process. The experimental results show that the Cu9S5 SNWs exhibited excellent nitrate reduction reaction (NO3−RR) properties. The Faraday efficiency (FE) of NO3−RR is 90.4% at the optimum potential −0.3 VRHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) and the ammonia production is as high as 0.37 mmol h−1 cm−2, which is superior to most reported electrocatalysts. In addition, the Zn‐NO3− liquid‐flow battery devices assembled using Cu9S5 SNWs as electrode materials show excellent application results. This work provides a reference for the design of highly efficient sub‐nanoscale NO3−RR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic denitrification emerged as an efficient and “green” technology to remove harmful nitrate from water. Metallic Cu-based catalysts were demonstrated as very active electrode materials but easily corrosion in electrolysis. Herein, an efficient and corrosion-resistant Cu@N-C catalyst for NO3 −-RR was synthesized on the basis of thermal conversion of a novel Cu-salophen polymer. The formed Cu nanoparticles were encapsulated with thin nitrogen-doped porous carbon sheets, which resulted into a special semi-enclosed core-shell structure. Although the content of metallic Cu nanoparticles in Cu@N-C catalyst was only about 1.6 wt.%, this Cu-less catalyst exhibited an efficient catalytic performance for NO3 −-N with NO3 −-N conversion yield of about 66% and N2-N selectivity of 93% in Cl−-free neutral solution. In particular, the semi-enclosed core-shell structures endowed this Cu@N-C catalyst with the better corrosion resistance in the electrolysis. This unique semi-enclosed structure with porous N-C shells may also contribute to the activity enhancement of Cu nanoparticles for NO3 −-RR. This work suggests a new synthesis route for Cu-less catalysts with high efficiency and corrosion-resistance property toward NO3 −-RR.

Highly selective electrochemical nitrate reduction using copper phosphide self-supported copper foam electrode: Performance, mechanism, and application

Abstract:A highly active and selective electrode is essential in electrochemical denitrification. Although the emerging Cu-based electrode has attracted intensive attentions in electrochemical NO3− reduction, the issues such as restricted activity and selectivity are still unresolved. In our work, a binder-free composite electrode (Cu3P/CF) was first prepared by direct growth of copper phosphide on copper foam and then applied to electrochemical NO3− reduction. The resulting Cu3P/CF electrode showed enhanced electrochemical performance for NO3− reduction (84.3%) with high N2 selectivity (98.01%) under the initial conditions of 1500 mg L−1 Cl− and 50 mg N L−1 NO3−. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) demonstrated that electrochemical NO3− reduction was achieved through electron transfer between NO3− and Cu0 originated from CF. The in-situ grown Cu3P served as the bifunctional catalyst, the electron mediator or bridge to facilitate the electron-transfer for NO3− reduction and the stable catalyst to produce atomic H* toward NO2− conversion. Meanwhile, the Cu3P/CF remained its electrocatalytic activity even after eight cyclic experiments. Finally, a 2-stage treatment strategy, pre-oxidation by Ir-Ru/Ti anode and post-reduction by Cu3P/CF cathode, was designed for effective electrochemical chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) removal from real wastewater.

Abstract:Removal of NO3− is a challenging problem in wastewater treatment. Electrocatalysis shows a great potential to remove NO3− but selectively converting NO3− to N2 is facing a low efficiency. Here, a novel 3D Pd-Cu(OH)2/CF cathode based electrocatalytic (EC) system was proposed that can rapidly and selectively convert NO3− to NH4+, and further convert to N2 simultaneously. The special designs for the system include: Cu(OH)2 nanowires were firstly grown on copper foam (CF) with excellent conductivity that features high specific surface area in enhancing NO3− absorption and conversion to NO2−. Then, palladium (Pd) with a superior photons activation capacity was doped on the Cu(OH)2 nanowires to promote the reduction of NO2− to NH4+. Then NH4+ was quickly oxidized into N2 by active chlorine. Finally, total nitrogen (TN) could easily be removed completely via above exhaustive cycle reactions. The 3D Pd-Cu(OH)2/CF cathode exhibits a 98.8 % conversion of NO3− to NH4+ in 45 min with the reported highest removal rate of 0.017 cm-2 min-1, which is 19.4 times higher than that of CF. The converted NH4+ was finally exhaustively oxidized to N2 with a 98.7 % of TN removal in 60 min.

Abstract:Zn–NO 3 − batteries can generate electricity while producing NH 3 in an environmentally friendly manner, making them a very promising device. However, the conversion of NO 3 − to NH 3 involves a proton-assisted 8-electron (8e − ) transfer process with a high kinetic barrier, requiring high-performance catalysts to realize the potential applications of this technology. Herein, we propose a heterostructured CoO/CuO nanoarray electrocatalyst prepared on a copper foam (CoO/CuO-NA/CF) that can electrocatalytically and efficiently convert NO 3 − to NH 3 at low potential and achieves a maximum NH 3 yield of 296.9 μmol h −1 cm −2 and the Faraday efficiency (FE) of 92.9% at the −0.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Impressively, Zn–NO 3 − battery based on the monolithic CoO/CuO-NA/CF electrode delivers a high NH 3 yield of 60.3 μmol h −1 cm −2 , FE NH3 of 82.0%, and a power density of 4.3 mW cm −2 . This study provides a paradigm for heterostructured catalyst preparation for the energy-efficient production of NH 3 and simultaneously generating electrical energy.

Abstract:Developing sustainable energy solutions is critical for addressing the dual challenges of energy demand and environmental impact. In this study, a zinc-nitrate (Zn-NO3-) battery system was designed for the simultaneous production of ammonia (NH3) via the electrocatalytic NO3- reduction reaction (NO3RR) and electricity generation. Continuous wave CO2 laser irradiation yielded precisely controlled CoFe2O4@nitrogen-doped carbon (CoFe2O4@NC) hollow nanocubes from CoFe Prussian blue analogs (CoFe-PBA) as the integral electrocatalyst for NO3RR in 1.0-M KOH, achieving a remarkable NH3 production rate of 10.9 mgh-1cm-2 at -0.47 V versus RHE with exceptional stability. In-situ and ex-situ methods revealed that the CoFe2O4@NC surface transformed into high-valent Fe/CoOOH active-species, optimizing the adsorption energy of NO3RR (*NO2 and *NO species) intermediates. Furthermore, DFT calculations validated the possible NO3RR pathway on CoFe2O4@NC starting with NO3- conversion to *NO2 intermediates, followed by reduction to *NO. Subsequent protonation forms the *NH and *NH2 species, leading to NH3 formation via final protonation. The Zn-NO3- battery utilizing the CoFe2O4@NC cathode exhibits dual functionality by generating electricity with a stable open-circuit voltage of 1.38-V versus Zn/Zn2+ and producing NH3. This study inspires the simple design of low-cost catalysts for NO3RR-to-NH3 conversion and positions the Zn-NO3- battery as a promising technology for industrial applications.

Abstract:As the main nitrogen-containing pollutant of agricultural and industrial wastewater, nitrate (NO3-) is obtainable from the natural nitrogen cycle and industrial emission. Recovering nitrogen (N) from nitrate-polluted waste-water to produce ammonia (NH3) is a promising route to mitigate pollution risks and create economic values. Since nitrate polluted wastewater always exists in acidic or neutral form, electrocatalytic nitrate conversion in neutral electrolytes is convenient for following treatments. Herein, we report an in-situ electrochemical recon-structed nanofiber-like Polypyrrole-Copper (PPy-Cu-E) 3D network for high-efficient NO(3)(- )reduction to NH3 in the neutral electrolyte (pH =7.5). In the presence of NO3-, the electrochemical reconstruction process endowed PPy-Cu-E with compactly arranged Cu nanocrystals on its nanofibers and remarkably improved electrochemical active surface area. In flow cell, the PPy-Cu-E achieved a high NH3 yield rate (0.588 mmol mgcat h(-1)) at a relatively low overpotential (-0.61 V vs. RHE) with 91.95 +/- 1% Faradaic efficiency. By employing authentic electroplating wastewater (pH = 7.4) as a catholyte, 93 % of NO3--N could be converted in 10 h. This work demonstrated the feasibility of high-yield electrocatalytic conversion from nitrate to ammonia under relatively low overpotential in neutral electrolytes and provided a promising method for N-recovery from nitrate wastes.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO 3 − ) is one of the most common pollutants in natural bodies of water and as such threatens both human health and the safety of aquatic environment. There are efficient electrochemical techniques to directly remove NO 3 − , but inexpensive, selective and electrocatalytic strategies to eliminate NO 3 − by converting it into benign nitrogen (N 2 ) remain challenging. This work studied Cu particles that were formed directly on a Ni foam (Cu–NF) and evaluated their electrocatalytic NO 3 − reduction performance. The use of carbon nanotubes (CNT) functionalized with titanium suboxides (TiSO) as the anode facilitated the generation of active chlorine species that had a key role in the removal of NH 4 + . An electrochemical system that integrated a Cu–NF cathode with a TiSO-CNT anode could remove 88.5% of NO 3 − with a >99% N 2 selectivity when operated over 6 h (4.1 × 10 −4 h −1 ) at a potential of −1.2 V vs Ag/AgCl. Because the chloride ions are very common in natural sources of water, this technique offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for the removal of NO 3 − from contaminated water sources.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) provides a promising route for nitrate recycling and ammonia production. In this work, Co nanoparticle catalyst was developed on a copper foam substrate (CoNPs/ CF) by electrodeposition. The CoNPs/CF catalysis exhibits a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.0% at -0.2 V vs. RHE and an NH 3 yield rate of 14328.65 mu g h -1 cm -2 at -0.5 V vs. RHE. In -suit Raman spectroscopy and theoretical calculations demonstrated that the 3D copper foam structure of the substrate enhances the electron exchange capacity, which promotes the adsorption of nitrate on the cobalt (Co) surface. Moreover, Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) is employed with CoNPs/CF, contributing to 98.43 mg h -1 with FE over 80%. Coupled with an air stripping process, this configuration has enabled the successful production of high-purity gaseous NH 3 products. This work suggests a practical and viable approach for the conversion of wastewater nitrate into valuable ammonia products.
Achieving efficient and stable electrochemical nitrate removal by in-situ reconstruction of Cu2O/Cu electroactive nanocatalysts on Cu foam

Abstract:Efficient and stable electrocatalysts are essential for electrochemical denitrification of nitrate contamination in water. Herein, a cost-effective Cu2O/Cu NRs/CF cathode bearing abundant Cu active sites and electron-rich Cu2O sites with good atomic H* provision performance is reported to exhibit rapid nitrate reduction kinetics (0.04815 min−1) and no nitrite accumulation. Benefiting from the enhanced mass transfer and sufficient H* provision, the rapid adsorption of *NO3, fast reduction of *NO2 to *NO, and highly selective *NO to *NOH transformation played critical roles in the electrochemical nitrate reduction process. Although ammonia was the main final nitrate reduction product, the electrocatalytic system we designed could effectively oxidize ammonia into N2 with the assistance of simultaneous electrochlorination, finally achieving 96.81% of N2 selectivity. Significantly, the long-term stability and low energy consumption to treat actual nitrate-contaminated wastewater make the Cu2O/Cu NRs/CF electrode promising for practical applications.

Abstract:Copper (Cu) is a widely recognized cathode for the electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO 3 - ). Nevertheless, its practical applications are currently restricted due to limited activity and selectivity, particularly at low NO 3 - concentrations. Herein, a Cu-Pd bimetallic cathode system was designed for NO 3 - reduction reaction with low NO 3 - concentrations (≤40 mg-N L −1 ). In this system, a Cu nanowire array cathode was utilized for NO 3 - reduction, while a Pd/C particle cathode was employed for NO 2 - reduction with H 2 generated in situ from a polypyrrole electrode. Due to the improved mass transfer and active sites derived from Pd/C particle cathode, along with the synergistic effects of NO 3 - reduction and NO 2 - reduction, the constructed Cu-Pd bimetallic cathode system achieved a 7.32-fold increase in NO 3 – removal rate and a 1.70-fold increase in NH 4 + selectivity compared to the traditional Cu cathode. This performance surpassed that of many other state-of-the-art Cu-based cathodes under similar conditions. Moreover, the Cu-Pd bimetallic cathode system displayed high reusability, and extremely low Cu and Pd leaching. Additionally, it showed strong resistance to environmental factors and can adapt to a wide pH range (3−9) and various NO 3 - concentrations (10–40 mg-N L −1 ). The electron spin resonance and scavenger experiments confirmed that both direct electron transfer and indirect reduction by atomic H* were involved in the NO 3 - removal process, with indirect reduction playing a more significant role. Overall, our findings guide the design of superior catalytic systems for NO 3 - removal to enhance the activity and selectivity of NO 3 - reduction for efficient water purification.

Abstract:Nitrate in surface and underground water caused systematic risk to the ecological environment. The electrochemically reduction of nitrate into ammonia (NO3RR), offering a sustainable route for nitrate containing wastewater treatment and ammonia fertilizer conversion. Exploration of catalyst with improved catalytic activity with lower energy barriers is still challenging. Here, we report a copper nitride (Cu3N) catalyst with moderate *NOx and *H2O intermediates adsorptions showed enhanced NO3RR performance. Density functional theory calculations reveals that the unique electronic structure of Cu3N provides efficient active sites for NO3RR, thus enabled balanced adsorption of *NO3 and *H2O (Delta E descriptor), sufficient active hydrogen, and moderate intermediate (*NO3 -> HNO3, *NH2 ->*NH3) adsorption energy. Notably, the in-situ analysis technology revealed potential-driven reconstruction and rehabilitation of Cu3N, forming possible nitrogen vacancy, thus implied for better mechanism understanding. The NO3RR activity of Cu3N surpasses that of most recent catalysts and demonstrates superior stability and implies the application for NH4+ fertilizer recovery, which maintaining an NH3 Faradaic efficiency of 93.1 % and high yield rate of 2.9 mg cm2h-1 at-0.6 V versus RHE. These findings broaden the application scenarios of Cu3N catalyst for ammonia synthesis and provide strategy on improving NO3RR performance.
Nano-Polycrystalline Cu Layer Interlaced with Ti3+-Self-Doped TiO2 Nanotube Arrays as an Electrocatalyst for Reduction of Nitrate to Ammonia

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is considered as a promising strategy to degrade nitrate-containing wastewater and synthesize recyclable ammonia at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. In this work, the copper oxides-derived nano-polycrystalline Cu (NPC Cu) was integrated with Ti3+-self-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTA) to fabricate the NPC Cu/H-TiO2 NTA. Ti3+-self-doped TiO2 NTAs and the NPC Cu facilitate electron transfer and mass transportation and create abundant active sites. The unique nanostructure in which Cu nano-polycrystals interlace with the TiO2 nanotube accelerates the electron transfer from the substrate to surface NPC Cu. The density functional theory calculations confirm that the built-in electric field between Cu and TiO2 improves the adsorption characteristic of the NPC Cu/H-TiO2 NTA, thereby converting the endothermic NO3- adsorption step into an exothermic process. Therefore, the high NO3- conversion of 98.97%, the Faradic efficiency of 95.59%, and the ammonia production yield of 0.81 mg cm-2 h-1 are achieved at -0.45 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode in 10 mM NaNO3 (140 mg L-1)-0.1 M Na2SO4. This well-designed NPC Cu/H-TiO2 NTA as an effective electrocatalyst for the 8e- NO3RR possesses promising potential in the applications of ammonia production.

Background Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (ENRR) to recyclable ammonia has become a green treatment NO 3 – technology for wastewater. However, poor stability of Cu-based electrocatalysts hinders their application. Methods In this study, three derived catalysts were prepared using Cu-BTC as a precursor at different temperatures: Cu@C-250, Cu@C-350, and Cu@C-450. The catalysts' activity was investigated through a series of nitrate reduction performance tests, and the reaction mechanism was explored through various characterization methods. Significant findings The batch ENRR test revealed that Cu@C-350 exhibited the best performance in terms of NO 3 – removal rate (73.70 %) and faradaic efficiency for NH 4 + (80.01 %) at –0.58 V vs. RHE. EIS and XPS analyses show that Cu + accelerates electron transfer, reduce interfacial resistance, and interact with catalytic carriers to enhance the adsorption of NO 3 – . Additionally, the durability as an electrocatalyst is verified by consecutive cycling tests. Therefore, the use of roasted carbon material derivatives as electrocatalysts for the purification of nitrate-contaminated wastewater is a reliable strategy. Two‐dimensional Cu Plates with Steady Fluid Fields for High‐rate Nitrate Electroreduction to Ammonia and Efficient Zn–Nitrate Batteries

Abstract:Nitrate electroreduction reaction (eNO3-RR) to ammonia (NH3) provides a promising strategy for nitrogen utilization, while achieving high selectivity and durability at an industrial scale has remained challenging. Herein, we demonstrated that the performance of eNO3-RR could be significantly boosted by introducing two-dimensional Cu plates as electrocatalysts and eliminating the general carrier gas to construct a steady fluid field. The developed eNO3-RR setup provided superior NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 99%, exceptional long-term electrolysis for 120 h at 200 mA cm−2, and a record-high yield rate of 3.14 mmol cm−2 h−1. Furthermore, the proposed strategy was successfully extended to the Zn-nitrate battery system, providing a power density of 12.09 mW cm−2 and NH3 FE of 85.4%, outperforming the state-of-the-art eNO3-RR catalysts. Coupled with the COMSOL multiphysics simulations and in-situ infrared spectroscopy, the main contributor for the high-efficiency NH3 production could be the steady fluid field to timely rejuvenate the electrocatalyst surface during the electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Mesostructures engineering is demonstrated as a robust design strategy for multimetallic electrocatalysts to promote selective NO3−‐to‐NH3 electroreduction and for use in Zn‐NO3− batteries. The promotion of NO3−‐to‐NH3 performance comes from the electron‐rich surface and the nanoconfinement environment of mesostructured synergies that enrich the nanozyme‐like chemisorption of key intermediates and thus facilitates the electroreduction of NO3− into NH3 through an 8e− reaction pathway. The electroreduction of nitrate into green ammonia (NO3−‐to‐NH3) in aqueous solution represents a sustainable route applicable to green NH3 electrosynthesis and nitrogen balance. However, the NO3−‐to‐NH3 electroreduction undergoes a complex eight electron (8e−) transfer pathway and results in unsatisfying activity and selectivity. Here, mesostructures engineering is presented as a new and robust design strategy for producing high‐performance multimetallic electrocatalysts that remarkably promote selective NO3−‐to‐NH3 electroreduction. 1D PdCuAg mesoporous nanotubes (MTs) are facilely prepared by a one‐step galvanic replacement‐assisted surfactant‐templating method in an aqueous solution. The electrocatalyst shows remarkable NO3−‐to‐NH3 performance with high NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FENH3) of 95.2%, superior NH3 yield rate of 17.7 mg h−1 mg−1, impressive NH3 energy efficiency of 29.8%, and outstanding stability (50 cycles), all of which are much better than the performance of counterpart electrocatalysts. The promotion of NO3−‐to‐NH3 performance comes from the electron‐rich surface and nanoconfinement microenvironment of mesostructured synergies that enrich nanozyme‐like chemisorption of key intermediates and thus facilitates electroreduction of NO3− into NH3 through an 8e− reaction pathway. Meanwhile,1D PdCuAg MTs are practically explored in a Zn‐NO3− battery, delivering a superior NH3 yield rate of 25.85 μmol h−1 cm−2 and a high FENH3 of 92.4%.

Abstract:The electrochemical nitrate (NO 3 − ) reduction (ENR) in wastewater, a promising remediation strategy, is often impeded by the essential use of costly noble metals. This study introduces an innovative non-noble Ni-Fe/Ni foam cathode fabricated via one-step electrodeposition technique. Efficient nitrate removal (99.4 %) was achieved with the selectivity of 83.6 % to NH 3 . The exceptional performance can be ascribed to the augmented active sites and the synergistic interaction between Ni and Fe. The leftward shift of the 3d orbitals density of Ni and the elevation of density at the Fermi level on Ni foam heterostructures, consequent to Fe doping, enhance the adsorption of H*. The addition of reactive chlorine species, generated through anodizing in Cl − mediated system, further improves N 2 selectivity by oxidizing intermediate NH 4 + product. The coupled anodic oxidation method employed herein achieves nearly 100 % removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN) for initial concentration of 100 mg/L within 180 min, under the conditions of 1.5 g/L Cl − concentration and a current density of 25 mA cm −2 . The findings underscore the potential of the Ni-Fe/Ni foam cathode within a Cl − mediated electrocatalytic framework for nitrate wastewater treatment, providing novel insights into the design of cathode catalysts and anodic coupling strategies for efficient TN removal.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3‐RR) to ammonia (NH3) offers a promising alternative approach for NH3 production and nitrate‐based voltaic cells which can deliver both electricity and NH3 as products, are also highly attractive. However, nitrate‐to‐NH3 conversion involves a proton‐assisted multiple‐electron transfer process with considerable kinetic barrier, underlying the need for efficient catalysts for the NO3–RR. A Zn‐nitrate battery is reported to enable a “killing three birds with one stone” strategy for energy supply, ammonia production and removal of pollutants with the iron doped nickel phosphide (Fe/Ni2P) as a NO3–RR catalyst electrode. Iron doping induces a downshift of the d‐band center of Ni atoms to the Fermi level, allowing the optimization of Gibbs free energies for reaction intermediates. The Fe/Ni2P catalyst exhibits 94.3% NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) and nearly 100% nitrate conversion efficiency at –0.4 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Further applying this highly efficient NO3–RR electrocatalyst as the cathode material, a novel Zn‐nitrate battery exhibits a power density of 3.25 mW cm–2 and a FE of 85.0% for NH3 production. This work enriches the application of Zn‐based batteries in the field of electrocatalysis and highlights the promise of bimetal phosphide for the NO3–RR. A Zn‐nitrate battery is reported to enable a “killing three birds with one stone” strategy for energy supply, ammonia production, and removal of pollutants with an iron doped nickel phosphide catalyst cathode. This battery system exhibits a power density of 3.25 mW cm−2 and a Faradaic efficiency of 85.0% for nitrate reduction to ammonia.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of nitrate can be a promising and sustainable alternative for the industrially used, energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process strategy at mild conditions and also solve the issue of nitrate nitrogen pollution in water. We present here the facile construction of N-doped CuO@Co3O4/NF nanoarray on nickel foam for highly efficient NH3 electrosynthesis via selective NO3- reduction at neutral electrolyte. At -0.85 V (versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, vs. RHE), this N doped CuO@Co3O4/NF obtained an outstanding Faraday efficiency (FE) of 99.78% and the NH3 yield of up to 31.92 mg h-1 cm-2 when operated in 0.1 M phosphate buffer solution with additional 50 mM NaNO3. And its excellent electrochemical performance could remain at least 12 hours. Furthermore, according to the characterization, the enhanced electrocatalytic performance should be attributable to the synergistic effect of N-dopant, a relatively large amounts of Co(II) and oxygen vacancies (OVs) in this heterostructure, leading to the suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the improvement of electron/mass transfer at this N-doped CuO@Co3O4/NF heterostructure.

Abstract:Cathodic aging and fouling have presented significant challenges in the realm of electrochemical denitrification for engineering applications. This study focused on the development of an economical and recyclable nanoporous Co 3 O 4 /Co cathode through anodization for nitrate reduction. What distinguished our cathode was its exceptional sustainability. Cobalt from the inactive catalyst could be reclaimed onto the substrate, enabling the regeneration of a new Co 3 O 4 layer. This innovative approach resulted in an exceptionally low Co catalyst consumption, a mere 1.936 g/1 kg N, making it the most cost-effective choice among all Co-based cathodes. The Co 3 O 4 catalyst exhibited a truncated octahedron structure, primarily composed of surface Co 2+ ions. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the bonding between the O atom in NO 3 - ions and the Co atom in Co 3 O 4 was thermodynamically favorable, with a free energy of − 0.89 eV. Co 2+ ions acted as "electron porters" facilitating electron transfer through a redox circle Co 2+ –Co 3+ –Co 2+ . However, the presence of two energy barriers (*NH 2 NO to *N 2 and *N 2 to N 2 ) with respective heights of 0.83 eV and 1.17 eV resulted in a N 2 selectivity of 9.84% and an NH 3 selectivity of 90.02%. In actual wastewater treatment, approximately 78% of TN and 93% of NO 3 - were successfully removed after 3 h, consistent with the prediction kinetic model. This anodization-based strategy offers a significant advantage in terms of long-term cost and presents a new paradigm for electrode sustainability.
