Abstract:To realize the 3D profilometry,a four-step phase shifting method integrated with fringes projection was adopted.In the fringe-projection profilometry,a computer-simulated fringe patterns was projected on the free-form surface of object and the fringes were captured by the phase-shifting technique.Automatic image-processing software with the proposed DCT-based phase-reconstructing algorithm was developed to reconstruct the continuous phase map from fringe patterns.The final 3D profile of object was obtained from the phase map.The corresponding experiments were conducted independently.In interferometry,a new-type interferometer was proposed,which combined the radial shear interferometer with simultaneous phase-shifting technique.It was based on the optical path with two Jamin glass plates and realized the collection of four frames of fringe patterns according to the principle of polarized light.It can test the full-field surface with different sizes and be free from vibration.The theoretical accuracy of this interferometer can reach 1/100 wavelength.Because it enjoys high anti-Jamming performance,the proposed interferometer can realize the high-precision dynamic measurement of aspheric surface under the common conditions without any vibration-isolated setup.

Abstract:A new method for small angle measurement is presented,which is accomplished by obtaining the angle of moire stripe formed by Talbot effect of Ronchi grating.The formula of calculating the long focal length from the angle of moire stripe is derived.Error analysis demonstrates that this method can be applied to the real-time testing with high accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper a new concept of a liquid-surface-based three-axis inclination sensor for evaluation of angular error motion of a precision linear slide, which is often used in the field of precision engineering such as ultra-precision machine tools, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and so on, is proposed. In the liquid-surface-based three-axis inclination sensor, a reference float mounting a line scale grating having periodic line grating structures is made to float over a liquid surface, while its three-axis angular motion is measured by using an optical sensor head based on the three-axis laser autocollimation capable of measuring three-axis angular motion of the scale grating. As the first step of research, in this paper, theoretical analysis on the angular motion of the reference float about each axis has been carried out based on simplified kinematic models to evaluate the possibility of realizing the proposed concept of a three-axis inclination sensor. In addition, based on the theoretical analyses results, a prototype three-axis inclination sensor has been designed and developed. Through some basic experiments with the prototype, the possibility of simultaneous three-axis inclination measurement by the proposed concept has been verified.

Abstract:Wilhelmy plate method measures and calculates dynamic contact angle based on force balance equation of the test plate (or fiber). The equation doesn't consider the resistance force which may result in a measurement error at high testing speed or for plate with non-negligible thickness. In this work, the influences of two ignored resistance forces, i.e. head resistance force and viscous friction, on dynamic contact angle were investigated both theoretically and experimentally. An auxiliary optical facility was designed and added to the tensiometer in order to get dynamic contact angle by direct optical method to verify the validity of the force balance method's result. A series of experiments for silicone oils with various viscosities on quartz plates with different thicknesses were done and proved that the two above forces cannot be ignored when Ca got larger or the plate got thicker. A new force balance equation was established, in which the fitting results of both head resistance force coefficient and viscous friction coefficient were nearly constant for all the testing twelve systems. By using new equation, the accuracy of dynamic contact angle testing results were obviously improved especially at high Ca.

Abstract:In this paper, a computerized device with the CCD camera for the automatic determination of important surface properties of liquid and solid in contact is described. This device is based on image processing algorithms. The system is capable of measuring the surface tension (surface energy) of liquid and the wettability of a solid surface in the wide range of temperatures, up to 1800/spl deg/C. The results obtained with this device are far more accurate than those obtained by means of the currently applied, extremely time consuming non-automatic methods and the operator's subjective evaluation.

Abstract:An approach to optical transduction and amplification of amphiphile-triggered orientational responses of liquid crystals (LCs) based on the interference effect was developed. The sensitive substrate was obtained by lading 4'-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) into three-dimensionally ordered silica colloidal crystal (SCC) films. Changes in the optical thickness (Delta OT) of the substrates, which are inverted by their Fabry-Perot fringes, depend on the changes of the refractive index caused by the differences in the orientations of LCs. The orientation changes of LCs loading into SCC films have the effect of amplifying signals. These are based on the interactions between surfactants (alkyl trimethylammonium halides (CnTABs, n = 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16) and sodium lauryl sulfonate (SLS)) and LCs, which induce a particular orientation of the LCs molecules. In this flowing system, the reversibility of the signal response for the adsorption of amphiphile was related to the length of the surfactant chain and its critical micelle concentration (CMC). A new method capable of real-time sensing adsorbate-triggered anchoring transitions based on LC-infiltrated SCC films was accomplished. These results provide basics and principles for online, label-free, and real-time analysis of molecules and their interactions in a flowing environment based on the interference effect.

Abstract:In this work, we extend the mathematical model of leptospirosis disease by taking into account the exposed individuals, the related death rate and the transmission coefficients between susceptible human and infected vector. Initially, we present the local asymptotical stability of both the disease-free and endemic equilibrium. We use the Lyapunov function theory with some sufficient conditions. This shows the global stability of both the disease-free and end emic equilibrium. Further, we present the bifurcation of the model and exhibit that the local asymptotical stability of the disease-free a nd endemic equilibrium co-exists with the threshold quantity. Finally, we discuss the numerical results.

Abstract:Understanding the structure near the three-phase contact line is critical for a comprehensive understanding of the thin-film region when a liquid partially wets a planer substrate. Despite numerous theoretical and simulation efforts found literature, an accurate experiment is difficult to conduct because of how small its scale. In the present work the accurate geometry of the region near the three-phase contact line was obtained by directly scanning the thin-film region with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The contact angles were directly extracted from the results and compared with the ones measured from traditional optical methods.

Abstract:This study describes the design and performance of a deflection-type refractometer based on measuring the fringe shift from the Fresnel diffraction pattern to solve some major limitations of conventional differential refractometers, such as measurement range, resolution, zero balancing, and monitoring analysis. The refractometer apparatus comprises a coherent light source, linear Fresnel zone plate, measuring cell, and image capture device mounted on a movable platform. The distance measurement unit is configured to detect fringe deflection due to the difference in refractive index between the sample and the reference. To achieve this, distance measurements with an accuracy of a few nanometers by using the local frequency method and fringe shift measurement method are quite feasible. The uncertainty in this technique is determined by the smallest change in the longitudinal displacement of the image for which the CCD camera can detect a change in pixel position. The refractive index is obtained with a highly extended measurement range of at least ±0.4R I U and precision of the order of 2×10-4 R I U. A numerical comparison between computer simulation of the diffraction patterns that occur when the linear Fresnel zone plate is illuminated by a plane light traveling parallel to the z axis.

Abstract:Measuring contact angles (CAs) on super-hydrophobic surfaces (CA ≥150°) can be challenging using traditional methods. In this work, we develop an alternative technique to measure CAs indirectly by measuring the minimum of the dimensionless hydrostatic pressure of a droplet as it de-wets a surface. This technique does not require measuring the slope of the profile close to the three-phase contact line and is devoid of any external pressure or force gauges. An experimental proof of principle is presented. Our results suggest that this technique may become a viable alternative for measuring the CA on super-hydrophobic and liquid repellent surfaces with relatively low uncertainty.

Abstract:The information of liquid film profile near a three-phase contact line is critical for a comprehensive understanding of various wetting and phase-change phenomena. Despite numerous theoretical and simulation studies, an accurate measurement on the thin film profile is difficult due to its very small scale. In the present work, a state-of-the-art atomic force microscopy (AFM) under tapping mode (TM) was employed to achieve a high-power scanning across the contact line. Within a scale of several to tens of microns, a highly linear film profile is observed near the contact line, based on which the contact angle is extracted. Comparing to the macro contact angle measured by the traditional optical method, the AFM result shows good agreement but achieves much higher precision. Moreover, the sub-micron thin film that is beyond the capability of the optical method was observed, in which the film profile is not linear and the concept of macro contact angle is not valid.

Abstract:The equilibrium contact angle of a droplet resting on a solid substrate can reveal essential properties of the solid's surface. However, when the motion of a droplet on a surface shows significant hysteresis, it is generally accepted that the solid's equilibrium properties cannot be determined. Here, we describe a method to measure surface tensions of soft solids with strong wetting hysteresis. With independent knowledge of the surface tension of the wetting fluid and the linear-elastic response of the solid, the solid deformations under the contact line and the contact angle of a single droplet together reveal the difference in surface tension of the solid against the liquid and vapor phases. If the solid's elastic properties are unknown, then this surface tension difference can be determined from the change in substrate deformations with contact angle. These results reveal an alternate equilibrium contact angle, equivalent to the classic form of Young-Dupré, but with surface tensions in place of surface energies. We motivate and apply this approach with experiments on gelatin, a common hydrogel.

Abstract:A scanning beam collimation (SBC) method is developed for measuring dynamic angle variations in which an acousto-optic deflector is used as a diffractive scanner to compensate the angle variation in real time, and a position sensor is used to detect the position of the beam that is reflected from the reflector (i.e., object) to be measured, The angle variation can be measured at high speed due to the very high scanning speed available in the acousto-optic deflector. There was good agreement between the angle variation measured using the SBC method and that using a conventional electronic autocollimator. The repeatability, resolution, and linearity of the scanning beam collimation method were determined using a piezo translator to generate tilt angle; the results show that high accuracy also can be achieved in dynamic angle variation measurement. The SBC method was applied to measure the tilt angle variation caused by the beating force of a dragonfly attached to one end of a gauge block. Abstract:The growing significance of surface properties in modern materials, particularly in medical technology, drives the need for accurate characterization techniques. Traditional contact angle measurements face challenges when applied to intricate surfaces like dental implants. Here, tensiometry applying the Wilhelmy plate method has been described in the last decade to offer one solution for the evaluation of complex surface geometries by quantifying apparent contact angles based on wetting forces. This study evaluates a simple setup employing the Wilhelmy balance concept for immersion angle determination. Instead of using a force sensor as in tensiometers, the wetting force is determined via changes in mass signal by means of an analytical balance available in standard laboratories. The force is thus recorded inverse to conventional tensiometry. The approach was validated on diverse geometries and extended to intricate structures, including plasma‐treated dental implants. Results were compared to conventional contact angle analysis systems underlining the reliability of the method in characterizing non‐planar and complex surfaces. Additionally, the method was successfully extended to the evaluation of surface energies on planar and non‐planar surfaces using various solvent sets. However, results evidenced that specimen geometry can influence the measurements to such an extent that immersion contact angles can no longer be calculated due to capillary effects. An outlook suggests further exploration with a wider range of test liquids to enhance accuracy in surface energy determination.

Abstract:Fluorescent dye dissolved in a liquid flow was used to outline liquid-gas free boundaries and, with digital imaging, to observe quantitatively surface wave propagation and pattern formation, as well as contact-line velocity and contact angle in thin film flows on horizontal and inclined substrates. Using the relatively inexpensive system described here, a fluid depth measurement with a precision of ±0.02 mm is obtained routinely in flows of several millimeters depth over an area of approximately one square meter, and essentially unlimited continuous time spans. Dynamic contact angles are measured, for the first time, on liquid fronts with significant three-dimensional curvature such as rivulets draining down an inclined plate at any speed or global location. Procedures to normalize results quantitatively for any nonuniformities of the incident illumination are given. Estimates of the contribution to the experimental error by other effects, such as variations in dye concentration and temperature, and image digital register capacity, are also discussed. Illustrative results for two fluids and several dyes are given. Refinements to decrease the local error further to ±0.005 mm or less are described.

Abstract:The surface plasmon technique is used to measure the local refractive indices in the quasi-nematic layers of a cholesteric liquid crystal with an accuracy of about 10−4. The local linear birefringence reflecting the orientational order of molecules in the quasi-nematic layers shows a temperature dependence characteristic of a nematic and in good agreement with the theory of nematic ordering.
An Experimental Investigation on Dynamic Wetting and Dynamic Contact Angle

Abstract:An experimental system,composed of a liquid tank,a solid thin plate,a step-motor,a CCD camera connected with stereoscopic microscope,a high-speed image acquisition card,and a computer,was utilized to investigate dynamic wetting behavior of silicone oil on glass,aluminum and stainless steel surfaces and understand the effect of the solid surface properties on the dynamic wetting behavior.It concludes that when the value of the dimensionless parameter,λ,was selected as 0.07,0.16 and 0.35 for glass,aluminum and stainless steel,respectively,the experimental results are in good accordance with the prediction of the precursor film model presented by Wang and Peng et al.Clearly, the dynamic contact angle is dependent not only on the capillary number and static contact angle but also on λ describing the solid surface properties.Furthermore,it is shown that the Hoffman-Voinov-Tanner law valid at low capillary number (Ca1 or θ_D10°) recommended by Cazabat still keeps true for a wide range of contact angles,up to 70°,which is reasonably explained by the precursor film model.

Abstract:An elastomeric inverse opal film exhibiting tunable wettability was fabricated and the wettability was monitored by a non-contact optical method. The inverse opal was fabricated by a template strategy with the elastomer of thermoplastic polyurethane, then the as-prepared film was surface-modified with fluoroalkylsilane. When the inverse opal film was stretched, the contact angle of the film decreased and the reflection peak showed a blue shift. Experimental results showed that the changes of the wettability and reflection peak were closely related, so the wettability could be monitored by reflection measurements. Such a non-contact detection method is especially useful in some situations where samples need protection from contamination. Furthermore, the material developed in this work may also be applied in some situations where in-situ wettability control is needed.

Abstract:We've developed an experimental platform that non-destructively and precisely measures the Refractive Index (RI) and dispersion of ultra-polished fused silica optics. Using Total Internal Reflection Digital Holographic Microscopy (TIRDHM), we exploit the phase change of reflected light in Total Internal Reflection (TIR) mode. This phase change depends on the incident angle at the TIR interface and the refractive indices of the involved media. We've optimized a combination of higher TIR phase sensitivity, considerable penetration depth, and minimized phase measurement inaccuracies through simulations to design our experiment. Key features include a custom-made precision Right-Angle Prism (RAP) of Astrositall material, a seamless interface with fused silica optics on TIR interface through optical contact, and single-shot measurement. We've demonstrated the accuracy of measuring fused silica optics through proof of concept and experimental results. Our measurements on two different samples show accuracy better than ± 3 x 10-4 compared to those obtained using a commercially available critical angle Refractometer (Metricon). Importantly, the setup offers the advantage of spatially mapping the refractive index, unlike point measurements by available Refractometers.
