Abstract:At present, most of tactile sensors integrated in prosthetic hands are installed on the surface of the fingers, which destroys the curved and compliant nature of finger surface that is important for the manipulation of objects. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a user-friendly packaging solution with solid-liquid hybrid structure for silicon-based pressure die to develop a force sensitive artificial finger which can meet the requirements of sensor sensitivity while maintaining the geometric and mechanical features of the finger surface. The artificial finger consists of a packaging including a thumb-shaped finger stall and a certain amount of dielectric liquid, a rigid phalange, a silicon-based pressure die, a printed circuit board (PCB), and a clamp plate. When a force is applied on the pad of the artificial finger, the finger stall deforms, which compresses the liquid in the chamber and result in a resistance change of the pressure die. A prototype with the overall size of 37 mm $\times32$ mm $\times50$ mm was developed and tested. Results showed that the artificial finger has good sensing performance with force detection range of 5.7 mN to 10.5 N, sensitivity of 3.34 mV/N and 1.99 mV/N in the range of 0 - 4.0 N and 4.0 N - 10.5 N respectively, linearity of 0.99, repeatability error of 0.77%, and hysteresis error of 2.9%. Furthermore, two typical daily applications including the mouse click and the texture recognition were carried out with the prototype, proving good real-time detecting capacity and dynamic characteristic.

Abstract:This paper is based on the “Fast Pneumatic Mesh Driver” (FPN) used to couple a silicone rubber soft body with a rigid skeleton. A rigid-flexible coupling soft-body human-like finger design scheme is proposed to solve the problem of low load on the soft-body gripping hand. The second-order Yeoh model is used to establish the statics model of the soft humanoid finger, and the ABAQUS simulation analysis software is used for correction and comparison to verify the feasibility of the soft humanoid finger bending. The thickness of the driver cavity and the confining strain layer were determined by finite element simulation. The mold casting process is used to complete the preparation of human-like fingers and design a pneumatic control system for experiments combined with 3D printing technology. The experimental results show that the proposed rigid-flexible coupling soft body imitating the human finger structure can realize the corresponding actions, such as the multi-joint bending and side swinging, of human fingers. Compared with the traditional pure soft-body finger, the fingertip output force is significantly improved. The optimal design and simulation analysis of the human gripper and the feasibility of the application have practical guiding significance.

Abstract:Soft pneumatic actuators possess attributes of large deformation, high driving force and light weight in the application of soft robots and smart devices. However, most reported soft pneumatic actuators are with rigid hydraulic source such as motor driven pump, piston and pressurized reservoir. These rigid and heavy hydraulic sources limit the actuation and compliance of the soft robots. Inspired by the bladders and hydrostatic skeleton of natural creatures, we propose a soft hydraulic robot consisting of dielectric elastomer (DE) and hydrogel, exhibiting an excellent actuating performance. An inflated DE balloon functions as the soft hydraulic source, in which the pressure of the containing water can be tuned by voltage. Hydrogel chambers are connected to the DE balloon as the hydraulic actuator, deforming as a soft robotic gripper. A new analytical approach is proposed to describe the system's behaviors, which couples the electromechanical actuation of DE and the hydraulic deformation of hydrogel chamber. The proposed model is validated by good agreement between the numerical and experimental data. The proposed model could serve as a new tool for modeling and characterizing soft robots with hydraulic actuation. The working principles can guide the design and control of soft robots and smart structures.
Investigation of the State Transition and Moving Boundary in a Pneumatic–Hydraulic Coupled Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

Abstract:Compared to robots and devices made of rigid components, soft robots and flexible devices driven by soft active materials possess various advantages including high adaptability under extreme environment and compatibility with a human. Dielectric elastomer (DE) membrane, which is commonly used in building soft actuators, can achieve large actuation by the combined loadings of voltage-induced Maxwell stress and fluidic pressures (pneumatic and hydraulic pressure). This paper proposes a pneumatic–hydraulic coupled electromechanical actuator (PHCEA), which exhibits strong coupling effect of electromechanical actuation (the Maxwell stress on DE membrane), pneumatic and hydraulic pressures. Considering the moving boundary and state transition, a computational model has been developed to investigate the coupling behaviors of the PHCEA. The numerical result by this model is in accordance with the experimental measurements. The combination of experimental data and the theoretical result indicates that the state transition and moving boundary separate the potential region of electrical breakdown and mechanical damage. This model can be utilized as a practical method to characterize the performance and guide the design of soft devices. The experimental setup and computational method of the PHCEA bring new insights into the fabrication and characterization of soft robots, adaptive optics, and flexible bio-medical devices. The PHCEA possesses wide applications in underwater robots, soft muscles, and microfluidics systems. It can serve as the gas bladder of soft swimming robots, the soft actuator of hydraulic–pneumatic coupling systems, and the gas–liquid valve of flexible microfluidics systems.
Development of a Lightweight Prosthetic Hand for Patients with Amputated Fingers

Abstract:Finger amputations are the most common upper limb amputation, and they occur approximately 100 times more often than hand amputations. We developed a prosthetic hand for amputees with a thumb and metacarpal. In this case of amputation, the installation of actuators and electrical components is difficult because space is considerably limited owing to the residual metacarpal. This design issue is solved by installing actuators vertically between finger modules and the mounting part where the electrical parts are embedded. With this design, the arrangement between the palm of the patient and the fingers of the prosthetic hand can be adjusted as well. Weight is also an especially important design issue in the development of a practical prosthetic hand because the patient perceives that weight. Most prosthetic hands are attached to the residual limb of the amputee by compressing the contact surface between the product and the amputated body part of the patient. Heavy weight causes users to feel discomfort and fatigue over extended periods of usage. In this study, all frames used in the proposed prosthetic hand were fabricated from nylon using multi-jet-fusion three-dimensional printing. As a result, the weight of the developed prosthetic hand was only 152.32 g but still had the desired strength and stiffness. Each prosthetic finger has four-degree-of-freedom. The distal interphalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and metacarpophalangeal joints are coupled and driven by power from an actuator, which is transferred to each joint through the tendons. Adduction, abduction, and self-adaptive grasping motions were passively realized using linear and torsional springs. The prototype was fabricated based on these design concepts and functions, and its functionality was verified in experiments using diverse objects.

Abstract:An anthropomorphic prosthetic hand for wrist or forearm amputees is developed herein. The prosthetic hand was designed with an underactuated mechanism, which makes self-adaptive grasping possible, as well as natural motions such as flexion and extension. The finger and thumb modules were designed with four degrees of freedom by motions of the distal interphalangeal, proximal interphalangeal, and metacarpophalangeal joints. In this research, we pursued several novel trials in prosthetic hand design. By using two four-bar linkages composed of a combination of linkages and gears for coupling joints at each finger, it was possible to make a compact design, and the linkage has advantages such as accurate positioning, uniform power transmission, and high payload. Also, by using constant-velocity joints, torque is transferred to finger modules regardless of adduction/abduction motions. In addition, adduction/abduction and self-adaptive grasping motions are passively realized using torsional springs. The developed prosthetic hand was fabricated with a weight of 475 g and a human hand size of 175 mm. Experiments with diverse objects showed its good functionality.

Abstract:This paper describes the design of a prosthetic hand for wrist amputations. The mechanism considers the use of three actuators: one each for the movement of the little finger, annular finger, and middle finger. The second actuator controls the index finger, and the third controls the thumb. The prototype is considered relevant as it is able to move the distal phalanx in all fingers; the little, annular, and middle fingers are able to adapt to the shape of the object being gripped (adaptive grip). The sequence of movements achieved with the thumb emulate the opposition/reposition and flexion/extension movements, commanded by a single actuator. The proposed design was built by additive manufacturing and effortlessly achieves a large number of grips. Additionally, the prosthesis could perform specific movements, such as holding a needle, although this grip demands higher precision in the control of the fingers. Due to the manufacturing method, the prosthesis weighs only 200 g, increasing to 450 g when the actuators are included, therefore weighing less than an average adult’s hand.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the design of a soft wearable exoskeleton that comprises of a glove embedded with pneumatic actuators of variable stiffness for hand assistive and rehabilitation application. The device is lightweight and easily wearable due to the usage of soft pneumatic actuators. A key feature of the device is the variable stiffness of the actuators at different localities that not only conform to the finger profile during actuation, but also provides customizability for different hand dimensions. The actuators can achieve different bending profiles with variable stiffness implemented at different localities. Therefore, the device is able to perform different hand therapy exercises such as full fist, straight fist, hook fist and table top. The device was characterized in terms of its range of motion and maximum force output. Experiments were conducted to examine the differences between active and passive actuation. The results showed that the device could achieve hand grasping and pinching with acceptable range of motion and force.

Abstract:In this paper, a finger-like soft robot is proposed and fabricated with a new multi-sectional design. In the previous multi-section soft robots, the position of the bending center of the soft section is changed by changing the internal pressure. This makes them different from the human finger and creates kinematic analysis problems. Here, an efficient joint is proposed for the soft reinforced actuators to act like human fingers such that the joint rotation location does not change much on the robot for different internal pressures. A prototype of multi-sectional soft reinforced actuator with new joint is fabricated to move like a human finger and generate the distal interphalangeal (DIP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint angles. Finite element method is employed to demonstrate the behavior of the robot and also an analytical model is presented to predict its joints angle in terms of the internal pressure. The effect of a geometric parameter of the joint is investigated on the tip displacement of the robot, the DIP and the PIP joint angles. Due to the fact that the relation between pressure and joint angles is unclear, an equation is proposed for estimation of the DIP and PIP angles as a function of the pressure. Finally, comparing the angles of the robot joints with the angle of the human finger shows that the proposed design can move like a human finger.

Abstract:Soft robotic hands with monolithic structure have shown great potential to be used as prostheses due to their advantages to yield light weight and compact designs as well as its ease of manufacture. However, existing soft prosthetic hands design were often not geared towards addressing some of the practical requirements highlighted in prosthetics research. The gap between the existing designs and the practical requirements significantly hampers the potential to transfer these designs to real-world applications. This work addressed these requirements with the consideration of the trade-off between practicality and performance. These requirements were achieved through exploiting the monolithic 3D printing of soft materials which incorporates membrane enclosed flexure joints in the finger designs, synergy-based thumb motion and cable-driven actuation system in the proposed hand prosthesis. Our systematic design (tentatively named X-Limb) achieves a weight of 253gr, three grasps types (with capability of individual finger movement), power-grip force of 21.5N, finger flexion speed of 1.3sec, a minimum grasping cycles of 45,000 (while maintaining its original functionality) and a bill of material cost of 200 USD (excluding quick disconnect wrist but without factoring in the cost reduction through mass production). A standard Activities Measure for Upper-Limb Amputees benchmark test was carried out to evaluate the capability of X-Limb in performing grasping task required for activities of daily living. The results show that all the practical design requirements are satisfied, and the proposed soft prosthetic hand is able to perform all the real-world grasping tasks of the benchmark tests, showing great potential in improving life quality of individuals with upper limb loss.

Abstract:Prosthetic arms and hands that can be controlled by the user's electromyography (EMG) signals are emerging. Eventually, these advanced prosthetic devices will be expected to touch and be touched by other people. As realistic as they may look, the currently available prosthetic hands have physical properties that are still far from the characteristics of human skins because they are much stiffer. In this paper, different configurations of synthetic finger phalanges have been investigated for their skin compliance behaviour and have been compared with the phalanges of the human fingers and a phalanx from a commercially available prosthetic hand. Handshake tests were performed to identify which areas on the human hand experience high contact forces. After these areas were determined, experiments were done on selected areas using an indenting probe to obtain the force-displacement curves. Finite element simulations were used to compare the force-displacement results of the synthetic finger phalanx designs with that of the experimental results from the human and prosthetic finger phalanges. The simulation models were used to investigate the effects of (i) varying the internal topology of the finger phalanx and (ii) varying different materials for the internal and external layers.

Abstract:This paper details the design and fabrication process of a fully integrated soft humanoid robotic hand with five finger that integrate an embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator and a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) flexure sensor. Several challenges including precise control of the SMA actuator, improving power efficiency, and reducing actuation current and response time have been addressed. First, a Ni-Ti SMA strip is pretrained to a circular shape. Second, it is wrapped with a Ni-Cr resistance wire that is coated with thermally conductive and electrically isolating material. This design significantly reduces actuation current, improves circuit efficiency, and hence reduces response time and increases power efficiency. Third, an antagonistic SMA strip is used to improve the shape recovery rate. Fourth, the SMA actuator, the recovery SMA strip, and a flexure sensor are inserted into a 3D printed mold which is filled with silicon rubber materials. The flexure sensor feeds back the finger shape for precise control. Fifth, a demolding process yields a fully integrated multifunctional soft robotic finger. We also fabricated a hand assembled with five fingers and a palm. We measured its performance and specifications with experiments. We demonstrated its capability of grasping various kinds of regular or irregular objects. The soft robotic hand is very robust and has a large compliance, which makes it ideal for use in an unstructured environment. It is inherently safe to human operators as it can withstand large impacts and unintended contacts without causing any injury to human operators or damage to the environment.

Abstract:According to clinical studies, upper limb robotic suits are vital to reduce therapist fatigue and accelerate patient rehabilitation. Soft pneumatic actuators have drawn increasing attention for the development of wearable robots due to their low weight, flexibility, and high power-to-weight ratio. However, most of current actuators were designed for the flexion assistance of a specific joint, and that for joint extension requires further investigation. Furthermore, designing an actuator for diverse working scenarios remains a challenge. In this paper, we propose an all-fabric bi-directional actuator to assist the flexion and extension of the elbow, wrist, and fingers. A mathematical model is presented that predicts the deformation and guides the design of the proposed bi-directional actuator. To further validate the applicability and adaptability of the proposed actuator for different joints, we developed a 3-DOF soft robotic suit. Preliminary results show that the robotic suit can assist the motion of the elbow, wrist, and finger of the subject.

Abstract:Neuroprosthetic hands are typically heavy (over 400 g) and expensive (more than US$10,000), and lack the compliance and tactile feedback of human hands. Here, we report the design, fabrication and performance of a soft, low-cost and lightweight (292 g) neuroprosthetic hand that provides simultaneous myoelectric control and tactile feedback. The neuroprosthesis has six active degrees of freedom under pneumatic actuation, can be controlled through the input from four electromyography sensors that measure surface signals from residual forearm muscles, and integrates five elastomeric capacitive sensors on the fingertips to measure touch pressure so as to enable tactile feedback by eliciting electrical stimulation on the skin of the residual limb. In a set of standardized tests performed by two individuals with transradial amputations, we show that the soft neuroprosthetic hand outperforms a conventional rigid neuroprosthetic hand in speed and dexterity. We also show that one individual with a transradial amputation wearing the soft neuroprosthetic hand can regain primitive touch sensation and real-time closed-loop control.

Abstract:We describe a fluidic actuator design that replaces the sealed chamber of a hydraulic cylinder using a soft actuator to provide compliant linear compression with a large force ($\geq$100 N) at a low operation pressure ($\leq$50 kPa) for a lower-limb wearable. The external shells constrain the deformation of the soft actuator under fluidic pressurization. This enables us to use latex party balloons as a quick and cheap alternative for initial design investigation. We found that the forces exerted by the soft material deformation are well-captured by the rigid shells, removing the necessity of explicitly describing the mechanics of the soft material deformation and its interaction with the rigid structure. One can use the classical Force, Pressure and Area formula factored with an efficiency parameter to characterize the actuator performance. Furthermore, we proposed an engineering design of the hybrid actuator using a customized soft actuator placed inside a single shell cavity with an open end for the compression force. Our results show that the proposed design can generate a very high force within a short stroke distance. At a low input pressure of 50 kPa, the exerted block force is approaching only about 3\% less than the classical equation predicted. The actuator is fitted to a new gait augmentation design for correcting knee alignment, which is usually challenging for actuators made from the purely soft material.

Abstract:Soft pneumatic actuators/robotics have received significant interest in the medical and health fields, due to their intrinsic elasticity and simple control strategies for enabling desired interactions. However, current soft hand pneumatic exoskeletons often exhibit uniform deformation, mismatch the profile of the interacting objects, and seldom quantify the assistive effects during activities of daily life (ADL), such as extension angle and predicted joint stiffness. The lack of quantification poses challenges to the effective and sustainable advancement of rehabilitation technology. This paper introduces the design, modeling, and testing of pneumatic bioinspired segmented composite proprioceptive bending actuators (SCPBAs) for hand rehabilitation in ADL tasks. Inspired by human finger anatomy, the actuator's soft-joint-rigid-bone segmented structure provides a superior fit compared to continuous structures in traditional fiber-reinforced actuators (FRAs). A quasi-static model is established to predict the bending angles based on geometric parameters. Quantitative evaluations of predicted joint stiffness and extension angle utilizing proprioceptive bending are performed. Additionally, a soft under-actuated hand exoskeleton equipped with SCPBAs demonstrates their potential in ADL rehabilitation scenarios.

Abstract:The loss of a hand can greatly affect quality of life. A prosthetic device that can mimic normal hand function is very important to physical and mental recuperation after hand amputation, but the currently available prosthetics do not fully meet the needs of the amputee community. Most prosthetic hands are not dexterous enough to grasp a variety of shaped objects, and those that are tend to be heavy, leading to discomfort while wearing the device. In order to attempt to better simulate human hand function, a dexterous hand was developed that uses an over-actuated mechanism to form grasp shape using intrinsic joint mounted motors in addition to a finger tendon to produce large flexion force for a tight grip. This novel actuation method allows the hand to use small actuators for grip shape formation, and the tendon to produce high grip strength. The hand was capable of producing fingertip flexion force suitable for most activities of daily living. In addition, it was able to produce a range of grasp shapes with natural, independent finger motion, and appearance similar to that of a human hand. The hand also had a mass distribution more similar to a natural forearm and hand compared to contemporary prosthetics due to the more proximal location of the heavier components of the system. This paper describes the design of the hand and controller, as well as the test results.

Abstract:This work presents a lightweight soft rehabilitation glove that integrates finger and wrist function by developing and applying the double-DOF soft pneumatic bending actuators (DPBAs). The proposed soft glove can achieve separate as well as coordinated motion exercises of fingers and the wrist, which benefits stroke patients who have complicated hand impairment. It consists of a commercial glove extended by a customized wrist bracer, on which are installed three dorsal DPBAs through fingers (index/middle/ring) and the wrist, two dorsal single-DOF pneumatic bending actuators (SPBAs) through thumb/pinky, and three palmar SPBAs through wrist. The proposed DPBA has two independent bendable segments to actuate flexion of finger and wrist, respectively, whose multigait bending conforms with multipattern flexion of the biological hand. The SPBAs are used for actuating wrist extension or finger flexion. The proposed wrist bracer is designed as an extension of the glove to install the soft actuators and transfer their motion and force to the wearer's wrist efficiently as well as minimize unactuated restriction on the hand. To verify its feasibility, we evaluate the range of motion (ROM), strength and speed of five subjects' hands assisted by the glove in six different passive motions. Results show that the proposed glove can provide sufficient assistance for stroke patients in hand rehabilitation exercise. Furthermore, the soft glove has potential in extending the hand functional training from simple exercises such as closing/opening and gripping to complex ones such as weightlifting, writing, and screwing/unscrewing.
