Abstract:Presented in this work is a thorough determination of the transition states between the different isomers of cyclic tetra-atomic silicon-carbide, germanium-carbide, and germanium-silicide clusters. Through use of density functional theory (B3LYP-D3BJ, M06-2X, ωB97X-D4, and B2GP-PLYP) in conjunction with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set, transition state structures and their barrier heights are determined for the interconversions between the various isomers for the family of tetra-atomic SiC, GeC, and GeSi compounds. SiC dust grains are known to be prevalent in interstellar dust, and among this group, so far only diamond-shaped (d-)SiC(3) has been detected in the interstellar medium (ISM). Determining which other structures might be detectable not only depends on their intrinsic spectroscopic features, but whether or not they are likely to exist as isomers in interstellar environments. By examining the energy barrier heights for transitions between isomers, we determined that many of these structures are unlikely to exhibit interconversion in the ISM, outside of hotter circumstellar environments. Although Boltzmann population ratios at approximate circumstellar temperatures suggest the presence of higher energy minima, it is likely that once interconversion happens, as molecules travel away from a star and cool, they will get kinetically trapped in the potential energy well they inhabit, making how the ratios freeze out dependent on the time and pathways the molecules take to cool down. As such, many of these higher energy minima may still be good candidates for detection including (rhomboidal) r-SiC(3), r-GeC(3), r-GeSi(3), (trapezoidal) t-Si(2)C(2), r-Ge(2)C(2), and d-Si(3)C.

Abstract:An extensive, high-level theoretical study on tetra-atomic germanium carbide/silicide clusters is presented. Accurate harmonic and anharmonic vibrational frequencies and rotational constants are calculated at the CCSD(T)-F12a(b)/cc-pVT(Q)Z-F12 levels of theory. With growing capabilities to discern more of the chemical composition of the interstellar medium (ISM), an accurate database of reference material is required. The presence of carbon is ubiquitous in the ISM, and silicon is known to be present in interstellar dust grains, however germanium-containing molecules remain elusive. To begin understanding the presence and role of germanium in the ISM, we present this study of the vibrational and rotational spectroscopic properties of various germanium- containing molecules to aid in their potential identification in the ISM with modern observational tools such as the James Webb Space Telescope. Structures studied herein include rhomboidal (r-), diamond (d-), and trapezoidal (t-) tetra-atomic molecules of the form Ge(x)C(4−x) and Ge(x)Si(4−x) , where x=0-4. The most promising structure for detection is r-Ge(2)C(2) via the ν4 mode with a frequency of 802.7 cm−1 (12.5 μm) and an intensity of 307.2 km mol−1. Other molecules potentially detectable, i.e., through vibrational modes or rotational transitions, include r-Ge(3)C, r-GeSi(3), d-GeC(3), r-GeC(3), and t-Ge(2)C(2).

Abstract:Equilibrium structures and relative stabilities of possible lower-energy isomers for C74Si2 base on C76(D2) were studied using semi-empirical INDO series of methods. Full optimization indicated that the most stable geometry was 39,60-C74Si2 where two silicon atoms were immediate neighbors and located at the bond between a five- and a six-membered rings near the longest C2(Z) axis of C76 and was less stable than C76. Fixing one Si atom, the other Si atom was used to substitute different carbon atoms with different Y Cartesian coordinates. It was found that total energy was related to Y coordinate values and became higher when two Si atoms were separated from each other. Based on the optimized geometries, the electronic spectroscopy of C74Si2 was investigated with the INDO/CIS method and long-waved absorption peaks appeared in the NIR region. The electronic transition and red-shift of absorptions of C74Si2 compared with that of C76 were discussed.
Nucleation of small silicon carbide dust clusters in AGB stars

Abstract:Silicon carbide (SiC) grains are a major dust component in carbon-rich AGB stars. The formation pathways of these grains are, however, not fully understood.\ We calculate ground states and energetically low-lying structures of (SiC)$_n$, $n=1,16$ clusters by means of simulated annealing (SA) and Monte Carlo simulations of seed structures and subsequent quantum-mechanical calculations on the density functional level of theory. We derive the infrared (IR) spectra of these clusters and compare the IR signatures to observational and laboratory data.\ According to energetic considerations, we evaluate the viability of SiC cluster growth at several densities and temperatures, characterising various locations and evolutionary states in circumstellar envelopes.\ We discover new, energetically low-lying structures for Si$_{4}$C$_{4}$, Si$_{5}$C$_{5}$, Si$_{15}$C$_{15}$ and Si$_{16}$C$_{16}$, and new ground states for Si$_{10}$C$_{10}$ and Si$_{15}$C$_{15}$. The clusters with carbon-segregated substructures tend to be more stable by 4-9 eV than their bulk-like isomers with alternating Si-C bonds. However, we find ground states with cage ("bucky"-like) geometries for Si$_{12}$C$_{12}$ and Si$_{16}$C$_{16}$ and low-lying, stable cage structures for n $\ge$ 12. The latter findings indicate thus a regime of clusters sizes that differs from small clusters as well as from large-scale crystals. Thus, and owing to their stability and geometry, the latter clusters may mark a transition from a quantum-confined cluster regime to crystalline, solid bulk-material. The calculated vibrational IR spectra of the ground-state SiC clusters shows significant emission. They include the 10-13 $\mu$m wavelength range and the 11.3 $\mu$m feature inferred from laboratory measurements and observations, respectively, though the overall intensities are rather low.

Abstract:Using a finite-difference pseudopotential density-functional theory in real space and Langevin molecular dynamics annealing technique, we perform calculations to determine the ground-state structure of the silicon cluster Si-9. It is found that the ground-state structure of Si9 cluster is a distorted capped hexahedron shape with C-s symmetry. And then, we implement the linear response theory within the time-dependent local density-functional formalism (TDLDA) to calculate the corresponding optical absorption spectrum. The spectral feature may help to identify isomers and can be used for comparison against future experimental investigations.

Abstract:Silicon carbide dust grains are ubiquitous in circumstellar envelopes around C-rich AGB stars. However, the main gas-phase precursors leading to the formation of SiC dust have not yet been identified. To date, only three molecules containing an Si--C bond have been identified to have significant abundances in C-rich AGB stars: SiC$_2$, SiC, and Si$_2$C. The ring molecule SiC$_2$ has been observed in a handful of evolved stars, while SiC and Si$_2$C have only been detected in the C-star envelope IRC +10216. We aim to study how widespread and abundant SiC$_2$, SiC, and Si$_2$C are in envelopes around C-rich AGB stars and whether or not these species play an active role as gas-phase precursors of silicon carbide dust in the ejecta of carbon stars.

Abstract:Ab initio all-electron molecular-orbital calculations are carried out to study the structures and relative stability of low-energy silicon clusters (Si(n),n = 12-20). Selected geometric isomers include those predicted by Ho et al. [Nature (London) 392, 582 (1998)] based on an unbiased search with tight-binding/genetic algorithm, as well as those found by Rata et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 546 (2000)] based on density-functional tight-binding/single-parent evolution algorithm. These geometric isomers are optimized at the Møller-Plesset (MP2) MP2/6-31G(d) level. The single-point energy at the coupled-cluster single and double substitutions (including triple excitations) [CCSD(T)] CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level for several low-lying isomers are further computed. Harmonic vibrational frequency analysis at the MP2/6-31G(d) level of theory is also undertaken to assure that the optimized geometries are stable. For Si12-Si17 and Si19 the isomer with the lowest-energy at the CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level is the same as that predicted by Ho et al., whereas for Si18 and Si20, the same as predicted by Rata et al. However, for Si14 and Si15, the vibrational frequency analysis indicates that the isomer with the lowest CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) single-point energy gives rise to imaginary frequencies. Small structural perturbation onto the Si14 and Si15 isomers can remove the imaginary frequencies and results in new isomers with slightly lower MP2/6-31G(d) energy; however the new isomers have a higher single-point energy at the CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level. For most Si(n) (n = 12-18,20) the low-lying isomers are prolate in shape, whereas for Si19 a spherical-like isomer is slightly lower in energy at the CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level than low-lying prolate isomers.
Structures and Stabilities of Small Silicon Clusters : Ab Initio Molecular-Orbital Calculations of Si 7 – Si 11

Abstract:Ab initio all-electron molecular-orbital calculations have been carried out to study the structure and relative stability of small silicon clusters (Sin, n=7–11). A number of low-energy geometric isomers are optimized at the second-order Møller–Plesset (MP2) MP2/6-31G(d) level. Harmonic vibrational analysis has been performed to assure that the optimized geometries are stable. The total energies of stable isomers are computed at the coupled-cluster single and double substitutions (including triple excitations) [CCSD(T)] CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) level. The calculated binding energies per atom at both the MP2/6-31G(d) and CCSD(T)/6-31G(d) levels agree with the experiments. For Si7, Si8, and Si10, the lowest-energy structures are the same as those predicted previously from the all-electron optimization at the Hartree–Fock (HF) HF/6-31G(d) level [Raghavachari and Rohlfing, J. Chem. Phys. 89, 2219 (1988)]. For Si9, the lowest-energy isomer is same as that predicted based on density-functional plane-wave pseudopotential method [Vasiliev, Ogut, and Chelikowsky, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 4805 (1997)]. Particular attention has been given to Si11 because several low-energy geometric isomers were found nearly isoenergetic. On the basis of MP2/6-311G(2d)//CCSD(T)/6-311G(2d) calculation, we identified that the C2v isomer, a tricapped trigonal prism with two additional caps on side trigonal faces, is most likely the global-minimum structure. However, another competitive geometric isomer for the global minimum is also found on basis of the MP2/6-311G(2d)//CCSD(T)/6-311G(2d) calculation. Additionally, calculations of the binding energy and the cluster polarizability offer more insights into relatively strong stability of two magic-number clusters Si6 and Si10.

Abstract:Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the major cosmic dust components in carbon-rich environments. However, the formation of SiC dust is not well understood. In particular, the initial stages of the SiC condensation (i.e. the SiC nucleation) remain unclear, as the basic building blocks (i.e. molecular clusters) exhibit atomic segregation at the (sub-)nanoscale. We report vertical and adiabatic ionization energies of small silicon carbide clusters, (SiC)$_n$ , n=2-12, ranging from 6.6-10.0 eV, which are lower than for the SiC molecule ($\sim$ 10.6 eV). The most favorable structures of the singly ionized (SiC)$_n^+$, n=5-12, cations resemble their neutral counterparts. However, for sizes n=2-4, these structural analogues are metastable and different cation geometries are favored. Moreover, we find that the (SiC)$_5^+$ cation is likely to be a transition state. Therefore, we place constraints on the stability limit for small, neutral (SiC)$_n$ clusters to persist ionization through (inter)-stellar radiation fields or high temperatures.
The first detection of SiC$_2$ in the interstellar medium

Abstract:We report the first detection of SiC$_2$ in the interstellar medium. The molecule was identified through six rotational transitions toward G\,+0.693$-$0.027, a molecular cloud located in the Galactic center. The detection is based on a line survey carried out with the GBT, the Yebes 40m, and the IRAM 30m telescopes covering a range of frequencies from 12 to 276 GHz. We fit the observed spectra assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium and derive a column density of ($1.02\pm0.04)\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$, which gives a fractional abundance of $7.5\times10^{-11}$ with respect to H$_2$, and an excitation temperature of $5.9\pm0.2$ K. We conclude that SiC$_2$ can be formed in the shocked gas by a reaction between the sputtered atomic silicon and C$_2$H$_2$, or it can be released directly from the dust grains due to disruption. We also search for other Si-bearing molecules and detect eight rotational transitions of SiS and four transitions of Si$^{18}$O. The derived fractional abundances are $3.9\times10^{-10}$ and $2.1\times10^{-11}$, respectively. All Si-bearing species toward G\,+0.693$-$0.027 show fractional abundances well below what is typically found in late-type evolved stars.

Abstract:Over the last decades, the rapidly growing theoretical methods have revolutionized whole scientific paradigm, developed state-of-art analyses, and created substantial computational platforms through the huge support of outstanding mathematical algorithms. The self-consistent-charge density-functional based tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) scheme is one of them that offers versatile and efficient quantum mechanical calculations with some unique features compatible especially to the crystalline solid even at low computational resources. Its effective parametrizations and computational implementations under the Gaussian standardized interface as an "External program" via the users' script (Gaussian- External methodology; GEM) has added an additional value because of which various in-built high-level Gaussian computations are directly accessible. Herewith, the Gaussian offered geometry optimization algorithms and convergence criteria plus the ModRedundant type relaxed potential energy surface (PES) scanning techniques are assessed through the GEM, and characterized the crystal structures with concerned molecular energetics and PES of the experimentally synthesized 1,4-bis (trimethylsilyl) benzene (1,4-BTMSB) compound; a potential precursor for the high quality Silicon Carbide (β-SiC) coating particles, and an ideal "Internal Standard" for the quantitative spectroscopic analyses. The general results reveal that the 1,4- BTMSB molecules in its unit-cell and crystal lattice experience significant non-bonding interactions that induces them to attain the definite molecular geometry with recognizable ring, angle, torsional, and steric strains. The quantitative analyses of its PES depict that the phenylene ring has to overcome multiple yet unidentical energy barriers with the tallest Ea1= 5.3 kcal/mol in order to undergo internal 2π angular rotation around the 1,4-(C-Si) axes. And, exhibiting such type internal rotation of its phenylene ring is energetically highly probable as this compound is widely employed in coating high temperature reactors, and in quantizing analyte in high energy run spectroscopic facilities. The same quantification is referred here in order to underscore the significance of adopting perfectly closed topological molecular architectures while designing/synthesizing amphidynamic type crystalline free molecular gyrotops and their prototypes.

A Possible Additional Formation Pathway for the Interstellar Diatomic SiS

Abstract:The formation of silicon monosulfide (SiS) in space appears to be a difficult process, but the present work is showing that a previously excluded pathway may contribute to its astronomical abundance. Reaction of the radicals SH + SiH produces SiS with a submerged transition state and generates a stabilizing H$_2$ molecule as a product to dissipate the kinetic energy. Such is a textbook chemical reaction for favorable gas-phase chemistry. While previously proposed mechanisms reacting atomic sulfur and silicon with SiH, SH, and H$_2$S will still be major contributors to the production of SiS, an abundance of SiS in certain regions could be a marker for the presence of SiH where it has previously been unobserved. These quantum chemically-computed reaction profiles imply that the silicon-chalcogen chemistry of molecular clouds, shocked regions, or protoplanetary disks may be richer than previously thought. Quantum chemical spectral data for the intermediate cis- and trans-HSiSH are also provided in order to aid in their potential spectroscopic characterization.

First principles investigations in the carbon silicon system of novel tetragonal C8 (diamond) and Si8 allotropes and binary Si4C4 phase

Abstract:Novel extended networks of C8, Si8 and silicon carbide Si4C4 are proposed based on crystal chemistry rationale and optimized structures to ground state energies and derived physical properties within the density functional theory (DFT). The two carbon and silicon allotropes and the silicon carbide belong to primitive tetragonal space group P-4m2 Number 115. C8 allotrope structure made of corner sharing C4 and Si4 tetrahedra is illustrated by charge density projections exhibiting sp3 like carbon hybridization. From careful symmetry analysis, Symmetry analysis of C8 indicated that it is another representation of cubic diamond, space group F-d3m Number 227. C8 is identified as ultra-hard with a similar magnitude of Vickers hardness. The interest in C8 is to serve as template to study Si8 and Si-C binary. Si8 allotrope is found soft with HV =13 GPa alike cubic Si, and Si4C4 is identified with HV =33 GPa close to experimental SiC. All three new phases are mechanically (elastic constants) and dynamically (phonons) stable, and their electronic band structures are characteristic of insulating C8 (diamond) with large band gaps of about 5 eV, and semi-conducting Si8 and Si4C4 with band gaps of about 1 eV.

Abstract:Presolar silicon carbide (SiC) grains in meteoritic samples can help constrain circumstellar condensation processes and conditions in C-rich stars and core-collapse supernovae. This study presents our findings on eight presolar SiC grains from AGB stars (four mainstream and one Y grain) and core-collapse supernovae (three X grains), chosen on the basis of {\mu}-Raman spectral features that were indicative of their having unusual non-3C polytypes and/or high degrees of crystal disorder. Analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which provides elemental compositional and structural information, shows evidence for complex histories for the grains. Our TEM results confirm the presence of non-3C,2H crystal domains. Minor element heterogeneities and/or subgrains were observed in all grains analyzed for their compositions. The C/O ratios inferred for the parent stars varied from 0.98 to greater than or equal to 1.03. Our data show that SiC condensation can occur under a wide range of conditions, in which environmental factors other than temperature (e.g., pressure, gas composition, heterogeneous nucleation on pre-condensed phases) play a significant role. Based on previous {\mu}-Raman studies, about 10% of SiC grains may have infrared (IR) spectral features that are influenced by crystal defects, porosity, and/or subgrains. Future sub-diffraction limited IR measurements of complex SiC grains might shed further light on the relative contributions of each of these features to the shape and position of the characteristic IR 11-{\mu}m SiC feature and thus improve the interpretation of IR spectra of AGB stars like those that produced the presolar SiC grains.

Abstract:Abstract We have chosen the Large Scale Atomic/Molecular Massively ParallelSimulator (LAMMPS) code to calculate the coalescence of silicon carbide (SiC), siliconoxide dust (SiO) in the AGB stellar wind. LAMMPS is a classical molecular dynamics(MD) simulation code. At the same time, we consider the effect of temperature on the evo lution of molecular dynamics. We also calculated the temperature change of non-sphericalSiC, SiO dust coalescence. The condensation temperature range of SiC dust in the AGBstellar wind is [300-500]k and [900-1100]k for SiO. Finally, the infrared spectrum of SiCwas calculated using Gaussian 16 software. The 77SiC, 70Si3C3, and 121Si3C3 modelshave clearly characteristic peaks of infrared spectra responding at 5, 8.6, 11.3, 15, 19, and37 μm.

Abstract:The lowest energy structures of Sin clusters up to 21 atoms are optimized with a genetic algorithm (GA) and density functional theory (DFT) with generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The structural transition from prolate cage-based structures to near-spherical configurations is found at n=17. Remarkable different melting behaviors of silicon clusters are obtained between those in prolate structures and near-spherical geometries. The structural transformation of near-spherical clusters is observed in the melting process. Two possible melting processes are proposed: near-spherical→prolate→subunits→molten and near-spherical→prolate→molten oblate.

Abstract:The structural, cohesive, electronic and optical properties of mixed SiGe:H quantum dots are studied by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on a representative ensemble of medium size nanoparticles of the form $Si_xGe_{47-x}:H_{60}$. The calculations have been performed in the framework of the hybrid non-local exchange-correlation functional of Becke, Lee, Parr and Yang (B3LYP). Besides the ground state DFT/B3LYP values we provide reliable result for the lowest spin and symmetry allowed electronic transition based on Time Dependent DFT (TDDFT/B3LYP) calculations. Our results show that the optical gap depends not only on the relative concentrations of silicon, germanium and hydrogen, but also on the relative position of the silicon and germanium shells relative to the surface of the nanocrystal. This is also true for the structural, cohesive and electronic properties allowing for possible electronic and optical gap engineering. Moreover, it is found that for the cases of nanoparticles with pure Ge or Si core, the optical properties are mainly determined by the Ge part of the nanoparticle, while silicon seem to act as a passivant.

Abstract:The fact that whether SiC2 is a parent species, formed in the photosphere or as a by-product of high-temperature dust formation, or a daughter species, formed in chemistry driven by the photodestruction of the parent species in the outer envelope, has been debated for a long time. In this study, we analyze the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of four SiC2 transitions in the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of three C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (AI Vol, II Lup, and RAFGL 4211) and find that SiC2 exhibits an annular, shell-like distribution in these targets, suggesting that SiC2 can be a daughter species in the CSEs of carbon-rich AGB stars. The results may provide important references for future chemical models.
