Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.
Achieving long-lived photogenerated holes in ZnIn2S4 loaded with CoOx clusters for enhanced photocatalytic pure water splitting

Abstract:The photocatalytic pure water splitting performance of photocatalysts is still restricted by the low utilization efficiency of photogenerated holes. Recent studies suggest that metal oxide clusters can efficiently abstract holes from bulk photocatalyst via discrete energy bands. However, the decay dynamics of excited states in such heterostructure have not been explored. Herein, ultra-small CoOx clusters decorated on ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) is prepared for pure water splitting. Experimental characterizations confirm that CoOx clusters efficiently capture holes from ZnIn2S4, thus inhibiting charge recombination. Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS) reveals that the lifetime of trapped holes by CoOx clusters is prolonged to 911.6 ps, enabling more opportunities to participate in surface reaction. Moreover, density functional theory calculation suggests that CoOx cluster is the preferential adsorption site for H2O to boost surface water oxidation. Benefited from above factors, the optimized CoOx/ZIS shows an improved H2 and H2O2 evolution rates of 404.1 μmol·g-1·h-1 and 371.9 μmol·g-1·h-1 under visible light irradiation, respectively, which is about ten times higher than that of pure ZIS. The study highlights the significance of efficient hole extraction for improving photocatalytic pure water splitting performance.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production via pure water splitting is of great importance to solve the current energy crisis and environmental issues. Here Ru and In dual‐single atoms for enhancing the transfer of photogenerated electrons and holes from TiO2 into Ru and In cooperate as a result of an efficient electron‐hole separation, and show good photocatalytic H2 production activity via pure water splitting. Photocatalytic hydrogen production is a prospective technology to solve the energy crisis and environmental problems. However, it is still challenging to produce hydrogen from photocatalytic water splitting on a large scale without a sacrificial agent and cocatalyst. Here, it is demonstrated that the dual doping of Ru/In single atoms on TiO2 (Ru‐In SA/TiO2) can modulate the separation of photogenerated carriers during the photocatalytic splitting of pure water. Impressively, the H2 evolution rate of Ru‐In SA/TiO2 reaches 174.1 μmol h−1, which is 6, 18, and 53 times higher than those of the Ru single‐atom decorated TiO2, In single‐atom decorated TiO2, and pristine TiO2, respectively. More importantly, Ru‐In SA/TiO2 outperforms most of the reported photocatalysts for photocatalytic water splitting in the absence of a sacrificial agent. Detailed investigations reveal that the decoration of Ru/In dual‐single atoms leads to the remarkable increase of Ti3+ and enrichment of oxygen vacancies, which accelerate the charge separation. In particular, the femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy suggests that the doping of Ru single atom promotes the transfer of photogenerated electrons from TiO2 into Ru, while the doping of In single atom enhances the transfer of photogenerated holes from the TiO2 valence band to In single atoms, as a result of an efficient electron‐hole separation. This work not only provides an efficient photocatalyst for H2 production through pure water splitting in the absence of a sacrificial agent, but also promotes fundamental research on catalyst design and modification.

Abstract:Efficient water splitting for H2 evolution over semiconductor photocatalysts is highly attractive in the field of clean energy. It is of great significance to construct heterojunctions, among which the direct Z-scheme nanocomposite photocatalyst provides effective separation of photo-generated carriers to boost the photocatalytic performance. Herein, Z-scheme hydrated tungsten trioxide/ZnIn2S4 is fabricated via an in-situ hydrothermal method where ZnIn2S4 nanosheets are grown on WO3⋅xH2O. The close contact between WO3⋅0.5H2O and WO3⋅0.33H2O as well as ZnIn2S4 improve the charge carrier separation and migration in the photocatalyst, where the strong reducing electrons in the conduction band of ZnIn2S4 and the strong oxidizing holes in the valence band of WO3⋅0.33H2O are retained, leading to enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production. The obtained WO3⋅xH2O/ZnIn2S4 shows an excellent H2 production rate of 7200 μmol g-1h-1, which is 11 times higher than pure ZnIn2S4. To the best of our knowledge, this value is higher than most of the WO3-based noble metal-free semiconductor photocatalysts. The improved stability and activity are attributed to the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which can markedly accelerate the interfacial charge separation for surface reaction. This work offers a promising strategy towards the design of efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst to suppress electron-hole recombination and optimize redox potential.
High-Performance H2 Photosynthesis from Pure Water over Ru-S Charge Transfer Channels

Abstract:As a versatile energy carrier, H2 is considered as one of the most promising sources of clean energy to tackle the current energy crisis and environmental concerns, which can be produced from photocatalytic water splitting. However, solar-driven photocatalytic H2 production from pure water in the absence of sacrificial reagents remains a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that the incorporation of Ru single atoms (SAs) into ZnIn2S4 (Ru-ZIS) can enhance the light absorption, reduce the energy barriers for water dissociation, and construct a channel (Ru-S) for separating photogenerated electron-hole pairs, as a result of a significantly enhanced photocatalytic water splitting process. Impressively, the productivity of H2 reaches 735.2 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation in the absence of sacrificial agents. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) for H2 evolution reaches 7.5% at 420 nm, with a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of 0.58%, which is much higher than the value of natural synthetic plants (∼0.10%). Moreover, Ru-ZIS exhibits steady productivity of H2 even after exposure to ambient conditions for 330 days. This work provides a unique strategy for constructing charge transfer channels to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, which may motivate the fundamental researches on catalyst design for photocatalysis and beyond.
Interface-Enhanced SiOx/Ru Heterocatalysts for Efficient Electrochemical Water Splitting.

Abstract:Developing a bifunctional electrocatalyst with remarkable performance viable for overall water splitting is increasingly essential for industrial-scale renewable energy conversion. However, the current electrocatalyst still requires a large cell voltage to drive water splitting due to the unsuitable adsorption/desorption capacity of reaction intermediates, which seriously hinders the practical application of water splitting. Herein, a unique SiOx/Ru nanosheet (NS) material was proposed as a high-performance electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The SiOx/Ru NSs show superior performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 23 mV (@ 10 mA cm-2) and excellent stability for nearly 200 h (@ 10 mA cm-2) in 1 M KOH. By means of the introduction of SiOx, it is beneficial for balancing the local charge density of the surrounding Ru sites. The suitable electronic coupling between the d-band electrons of Ru and the adsorbed species effectively balances the adsorption and desorption of reaction intermediates on the surface. As a result, the catalyst also exhibits overall water splitting activity with a cell voltage of only 1.496 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2. The present work opens up a new strategy for designing high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Abstract:Recently, Cu2O has been considered as an attractive material for solar water splitting due to its excellent characteristics such as small bandgap, visible light adsorption, abundance, and nontoxicity. The theoretical solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (STH) of Cu2O is 18% for water splitting. To date, the value experimentally obtained by previous works has not attained and overcomed above ideal value, because of the lack of Cu2O in photocathode to absorb sunlight efficiently, the short diffusion length of minority cariers, and the Cu2O photocorrosion during water splitting. 3D nanostructures for water splitting and surface modification contribute to resolving these issues. Nanostructures can improve STH owing to high surface-to-volume ratio and short diffusion length for carrier transport compared with bulk materials. In addition, surface modification enables to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pair and to protect the photoelectrode against photocorrosion, and thus resulting in the enhancement of stability in Cu2O photocathode. The present study aimed to improve STH and stability in Cu2O photocathode for water splitting by optimizing morphology of Cu2O nanostructures and surface modification. In order to determine the suitable conditions for water splitting, the relationship between the morphology of the structure and STH was examined. The photocathode with Cu2O nanostructures exhibited maximum photocurrent density of 4.58 mA/cm2 at a potential of 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and STH of 5.63%. Besides, surface modification was successfully introduced by covering nanostructures with homogeneous and conformal layers formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD).

Abstract:The incorporation of Zn atoms and oxygen vacancies in RuO2 can greatly influence its electronic structure and lattice strain, which can break the scaling relationships between the adsorption energy of HOO* and O*, and activate the dangling O atoms on the distorted surface as a proton acceptor, thus resulting in a considerably enhanced oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction activities. The development of efficiently active and stable bifunctional noble‐metal‐based electrocatalysts toward overall water splitting is urgent and challenging. In this work, a rutile‐structured ruthenium‐zinc solid solution oxide with oxygen vacancies (Ru0.85Zn0.15O2‐δ) is developed by a simple molten salt method. With naturally abundant edges of ultrasmall nanoparticles clusters, Ru0.85Zn0.15O2‐δ requires ultralow overpotentials, 190 mV for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 14 mV for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), to reach 10 mA cm−2. Moreover, it shows superior activity and durability for overall water splitting in different electrolytes. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations indicate that the incorporation of Zn and oxygen vacancies can optimize the electronic structure of RuO2 by charge redistribution, which dramatically suppresses the generation of soluble Rux>4 and allows optimized adsorption energies of oxygen intermediates for OER. Meanwhile, the incorporation of Zn can distort local structure to activate the dangling O atoms on the distorted Ru0.85Zn0.15O2‐δ as proton acceptors, which firmly bonds the H atom in H2O* to stabilize the H2O and considerably improves the HER activity.

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen is desirable for long-term renewable, sustainable and clean fuel production on earth. Metal sulfides are considered as ideal hydrogen-evolved photocatalysts, but their component homogeneity and typical sulfur instability cause an inert oxygen production, which remains a huge obstacle to overall water-splitting. Here, a distortion-evoked cation-site oxygen doping of ZnIn 2 S 4 (D-O-ZIS) creates significant electronegativity differences between adjacent atomic sites, with S 1 sites being electron-rich and S 2 sites being electron-deficient in the local structure of S 1 –S 2 –O sites. The strong charge redistribution character activates stable oxygen reactions at S 2 sites and avoids the common issue of sulfur instability in metal sulfide photocatalysis, while S 1 sites favor the adsorption/desorption of hydrogen. Consequently, an overall water-splitting reaction has been realized in D-O-ZIS with a remarkable solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 0.57%, accompanying a ~ 91% retention rate after 120 h photocatalytic test. In this work, we inspire an universal design from electronegativity differences perspective to activate and stabilize metal sulfide photocatalysts for efficient overall water-splitting.

An electron-hole rich dual-site nickel catalyst for efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalysis offers an attractive strategy to upgrade H 2 O to renewable fuel H 2 . However, current photocatalytic hydrogen production technology often relies on additional sacrificial agents and noble metal cocatalysts, and there are limited photocatalysts possessing overall water splitting performance on their own. Here, we successfully construct an efficient catalytic system to realize overall water splitting, where hole-rich nickel phosphides (Ni 2 P) with polymeric carbon-oxygen semiconductor (PCOS) is the site for oxygen generation and electron-rich Ni 2 P with nickel sulfide (NiS) serves as the other site for producing H 2 . The electron-hole rich Ni 2 P based photocatalyst exhibits fast kinetics and a low thermodynamic energy barrier for overall water splitting with stoichiometric 2:1 hydrogen to oxygen ratio (150.7 μmol h −1 H 2 and 70.2 μmol h −1 O 2 produced per 100 mg photocatalyst) in a neutral solution. Density functional theory calculations show that the co-loading in Ni 2 P and its hybridization with PCOS or NiS can effectively regulate the electronic structures of the surface active sites, alter the reaction pathway, reduce the reaction energy barrier, boost the overall water splitting activity. In comparison with reported literatures, such photocatalyst represents the excellent performance among all reported transition-metal oxides and/or transition-metal sulfides and is even superior to noble metal catalyst.

Activating Surface Sulfur Atoms Via Subsurface Engineering Toward Boosted Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:The performance of photocatalysts is affected not only by the surface structure but also by the atomic arrangement of the subsurface. Guided by first-principle simulation, Pt(Pd) single atoms are introduced into hexagonal ZnIn2S4 to substitute the middle In site, and dual S vacancies in the vicinity of the dopant are subsequently created. This unique subsurface dopant-vacancy pair brings a new defect level and higher hole concentration, resulting in enhanced charge separation efficiency and superior electronic conductivity. More importantly, it could also modulate the p-band center of neighboring surface S atoms, thus optimizing the balance between H adsorption and desorption. As a consequence, the subsurface-engineered ZnIn2S4 delivers an H2 evolution rate of 165.4 μmol h−1 under visible-light irradiation, and a great number of H2 bubbles are released under natural solar light. This work provides a new perspective on the development of solar-to-H2 conversion through artful subsurface engineering.
Mechanism analysis of Au, Ru noble metal clusters modified on TiO2 (101) to intensify overall photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:Accelerating the separation and migration of photo-carriers (electron-hole pairs) to improve the photo-quantum utilization efficiency in photocatalytic overall water splitting is highly desirable. Herein, the photo-deposition of Ru or Au noble metal clusters with superior electronic properties as a co-catalyst on the (101) facet of anatase TiO2 and the mechanism of intensifying the photocatalysis have been investigated by calculation based density functional theory (DFT). As a result, the as-synthesized Ru/TiO2 and Au/TiO2 exhibit high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Such a greatly enhanced HER is attributed to the interfacial interactivity of the catalysts due to the existence of robust chemical bonds (Ru-O-Ti, Au-O-Ti) as electron-traps that provide the photogenerated electrons. In addition, the formation of new degenerate energy levels due to the existence of Ru-4d and Au-5d electronic impurity states leads to the narrowing of the band gap of the catalysts. In addition, the as-synthesized Au/TiO2 exhibits more faster HER rate than Ru/TiO2, which is attributed to the effects of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as a synergistic effect of plasmon-induced 'hot' electrons that enhance the harvesting of the final built-in electric field and promote the migration and separation of the photo-carriers, which efficiently facilitates hydrogen evolution from the photocatalytic overall water splitting reaction.
Functionalized Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S Chalcogenide Nanotwins Enabling Z-Scheme Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Coherent twin boundaries in particulate chalcogenide photocatalysts can induce intrinsic homojunctions, which have been demonstrated to be effective toward solar hydrogen production from water. However, limited success up to date has been achieved on pure water splitting because of the self-oxidation of the chalcogenide photocatalyst. Herein, we report the efficient pure water splitting for simultaneous H2 and H2O2 production under visible light irradiation over a Cd0.5Zn0.5S (CZS) nanotwin photocatalyst. The success relies on the formation of unique phosphorus bridges at the surface of the photocatalyst that couples bulk twin boundaries and surface red phosphorus (RP) for efficient charge separation and restricted photocorrosion via a two-electron Z-scheme mechanism. The optimal photocatalyst exhibited 5.2 times increased H2 evolution rate compared to the pristine CZS and good stability as well. This work opens a door toward chalcogenide photocatalyst design for efficient pure water splitting by coupling twin nanostructures with surface P doping and heterojunction construction.

Abstract:Loading suitable oxidation and reduction cocatalysts on sulfide semiconductor photocatalysts for H2 and O2 production reaction still remain a great challenge. Herein, we present a simple physical mixing strategy to load reduction cocatalyst WP and oxidation cocatalyst Co3O4 co-modification ZnCdS (WP–Co/ZCS) with excellent photocatalytic water splitting activity. The co-modification of the double auxiliary catalysts can efficiently accelerate the separation of photocarriers, enhance the reaction kinetics and significantly advance the photocatalytic activity. The maximum hydrogen evolution rate of 21.44 mmol g-1 h-1 is attained over 10% WP-Co/ZCS photocatalyst, which is about 6.5 folds higher than bare ZnCdS, and a high photostability is also obtained. Meanwhile, a notable quantum efficiency of 27.6% at 420 nm and solar-hydrogen conversion efficiency (STH) of 1.57% are achieved, which is significantly surpassing many reported ZnCdS-based photocatalysts. Remarkably, an efficient and stable photocatalytic overall water splitting activity are achieved with hydrogen and oxygen generation rates of 61 μmol g-1 h-1 and 32.5 μmol g-1 h-1 for 10% WP-Co/ZCS, respectively. This work provides a new idea for designing oxidation and reduction dual-catalysts on ZnCdS nanoparticles to advance photocatalytic hydrogen generation performance and achieve pure water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting has recently attracted increasing interests for solar to chemical energy conversion. Nevertheless, the high-efficiency process for photocatalytic water splitting is driven by recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the resultant low H2 productivity. Herein, we demonstrate that P-doping induced positive charge centers (Pδ+) and indium vacancies (VIn) in ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) nanosheets can significantly promote photosplitting pure water to simultaneously produce H2 and H2O2. Microstructural and spectroscopic analysis suggest that Pδ+ and VIn can trap photogenerated electrons and holes, respectively, as a result of enhanced separation of electron-hole pairs. The optimal catalyst of P-CoNi/ZIS displays a stoichiometric H2 and H2O2 productivity of 1228.7 and 1105.5 μmol h−1 g−1, respectively, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 6.2% at 365 nm. Impressively, H2 productivity of P-CoNi/ZIS has surpassed most reported catalysts for photocatalytic pure water splitting. This work provides a unique strategy to create efficient photocatalyst for pure water splitting.

Construction of Urchin-Like ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 Heterostructure with Enhanced Activity for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:The ternary ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalysts has been fabricated by selecting effectiveness Au NPs as a solid electron mediator, via a chemical-deposition process for water splitting under simulated solar light irradiation. The designed photocatalysts exhibit high surface area and wide light absorption range, which significantly enhance photocatalytic efficiency. At an optimal ratio of 24 wt% Au NPs and 60 wt% ZnIn2S4, the obtained ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 photocatalysts achieve the highest H-2 production with the rate of 186.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), and the O-2 production rate is reached to 66.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1). It showed that the ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 composite structures exhibit significantly better photocatalytic activity than ZnIn2S4-TiO2 and Au-ZnIn2S4-TiO2 structure. Such an excellent performance should be attributed to the Au NPs in the Z-scheme system structure which favor to enhance the transfer rate of the photogenerated electrons and holes and remain strong redox ability of the photocatalysts. It is worth pointing out that the unique Z-scheme ZnIn2S4-Au-TiO2 heterostructure shows great solar activity toward water splitting into renewable hydrocarbon fuel.
Integrated Z‐Scheme Nanosystem Based on Metal Sulfide Nanorods for Efficient Photocatalytic Pure Water Splitting

Abstract:Developing efficient metal sulfides for pure water splitting is a challenging topic in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, inspired by natural photosynthesis, an all‐solid‐state Z‐scheme photocatalyst was constructed with Cd0.9Zn0.1S (CZS) for water reduction, red phosphorus (RP) for water oxidation, and metallic CoP as the electron mediator. RP@CoP core‐shell nanostructures were uniformly attached on the CZS nanorods, which gave rise to multiple monodispersed nanojunctions. The integrated Z‐scheme nanosystem exhibited an apparent quantum efficiency of 6.4 % at 420 nm for pure water splitting. Theoretical analysis and femtosecond transient absorption results revealed that the impressive performance was mainly due to efficient hole transfer of CZS, resulting from the intimate atomic contacts between CoP mediator and photocatalysts, together with favorable band alignment. Meanwhile, the multiple monodispersed Z‐scheme nanojunctions could provide abundant reaction sites, which was also important for the boosted activity.

Abstract:The development of efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) photocatalysts to enable solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting into oxygen has been tremendously challenging, primarily due to the low oxygen evolution efficiency caused by intrinsically sluggish kinetics. Herein, we report the design of a novel "host-guest" photocatalytic system that incorporates the molecular ruthenium (Ru) catalyst into covalent triazine framework (CTF) channels through a facile immersion treatment. The CTF acts as the photosensitizer and support material, while the mononuclear Ru-based complex Ru-bda-Isoq acts as a molecular water-oxidation catalyst. Remarkably, Ru-bda-Isoq@CTF-Bph achieves an excellent oxygen evolution rate of up to 2308 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation for 5 h. The structural matching between the porous photosensitizer and molecular catalyst is found to play a very critical role in achieving the high performance, and the specificity and universality of this system are also highlighted. This strategy provides valuable insights into the design of efficient water oxidation photocatalytic systems.

Efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting by synergistically enhancing bulk charge separation and surface reaction kinetics in Co3O4–decorated ZnO@ZnS core-shell structures

Abstract:Spontaneously photocatalytic water splitting to generate H2 and O2 represents a promising strategy for converting solar energy to chemical energy. However, photocatalytic water splitting without sacrificial agents is difficult due to the poor bulk charge separation and retarded surface reaction kinetics. Herein, we first combined the p–type Co3O4 cocatalysts with n–type core–shell heterojunction to create a Co3O4–decorated p–n junction by using bimetallic ZnCo–MOFs as template. In this hybrid, both the heterojunction and p–n junction can accelerate the bulk charge separation, while the highly dispersed Co3O4 cocatalysts can enhance the surface reaction kinetics. As a result, the outstanding H2 and O2 production rates of 3853 and 1927 μmol g−1 h−1 were obtained for the optimal sample, approximately 1750, 550 and 110 times higher than those of ZnO, and ZnO/Co3O4. Such synergistic enhancement can be evidenced by charge separation efficiency calculation. XAFS, XPS and DFT calculation indicated that the electrons and holes can be effectively assembled on ZnO and Co3O4, respectively. This work provides a new strategy for combining the advantages of cocatalyst and p–n junction as well as the core–shell heterojunction to enhance the photocatalytic water splitting without sacrificial agent.

Abstract:The development of metal sulfide catalysts with remarkable activity toward efficient overall photocatalytic water splitting remains challenging owing to the dominant charge recombination and deficient catalytic active sites. Moreover, in the process of water oxidation catalysis, the inhibition of severe photocorrosion is an immense task, requiring effective photogenic hole-transfer kinetics. Herein, stratified Co-MnO2@CdS/CoS hollow cubes with spatially separated catalytic sites were rationally designed and fabricated as highly efficient controllable catalysts for photocatalytic overall water splitting. The unique self-templated method, including a continuous anion/cation-exchange reaction, integrates a Co-doped oxidation co-catalyst (Co-MnO2) and a reduction co-catalyst (CoS) on the nanocubes with uniform interface contact and ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanometer sheets. We demonstrate that the stratified Co-MnO2@CdS/CoS hollow cubes can provide an abundance of active sites for surface redox reactions and contribute to the separation and migration of the photoionization charge carriers. In particular, CoS nanoparticles dispersed on the walls of CdS hollow cubes were identified as reduction co-catalysts accelerating hydrogen generation, while Co-MnO2 nanosheets attached to the inner walls of the CdS hollow cube were oxidation co-catalysts, promoting oxygen evolution dynamics. Benefiting from the desirable structural and compositional advantages, optimized stratification of Co-MnO2@CdS/CoS nanocubes provided a catalytic system devoid of precious metals, which exhibited a remarkable overall photocatalytic water-splitting rate (735.4 (H2) and 361.1 (O2) μmol h−1 g−1), being among the highest values reported thus far for CdS-based catalysts. Moreover, an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.32% was achieved for hydrogen evolution at 420 nm. This study emphasizes the importance of rational design on the structure and composition of photocatalysts for overall water splitting.Stratified Co-MnO2@CdS/CoS hollow cubes enable rapid transfer of photoinduced electrons and holes from CdS to the CoS and Co-MnO2 catalytic sites, respectively, thereby enhancing overall water-splitting performance.
