Abstract:A series of SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) (0.005 ≤x≤ 0.05) phosphors were successfully synthesized through a pressureless, facile, and efficient solid state route. The crystal structure, band structure, and their photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. The phosphors exhibit rod shape morphology with a uniform Eu(2+) distribution. Under n-UV excitation the emission spectra shift from 477 to 497 nm with an increase of Eu(2+) concentration. The concentration quenching mechanism of Eu(2+) emission was dominated by the dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial Ba2SiO4:Eu(2+) phosphor. The phosphor also exhibits high current saturation and high resistance under low voltage electron bombardment. All the results indicate that the SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) phosphors can be considered as candidates for application in both white LEDs and FEDs.

Abstract:A series of nitride solid solutions (Ca1-x,Sr-x)(16)Si17N34:0.03Eu(2+) were successfully synthesized through the conventional solid-state method. The electronic crystal structure and photoluminescence characteristics were studied in detail. The excitation in the near-ultraviolet and blue regions of the samples shows a broad band in the 250-550 nm range, which can match well with the n-UV and blue lighting-emitting diode chips. Partial substitution of Ca2+ by Sr2+ results in a redshift emission, and the impacts of Sr content on the luminescence were researched in detail. Under 410 nm excitation, the phosphor exhibited tunable red emission from 616 to 653 nm by changing the concentration of Sr2+. Based on the crystal data, the emission can be fitted into three distinguished Gaussian components, which are attributed to the different Eu2+ luminescence centers occupied in three disparate Ca2+ (Sr2+) lattice sites. The temperature quenching property of the phosphor was also investigated, and the good thermal stability of the phosphors was analyzed through the activation energy for thermal quenching. And the obtained CCT values from 2642 to 2817 K are suitable for a warm white light region. All the results indicated that the phosphors have possible application in the warm white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:The union of chemical compositions substitution and spectral controlling is of importance for the discovery of new materials or the implementation of properties optimization. In this work, we employed an effective strategy to regulate crystal structures by chemical unit co-substitution. We applied this strategy to Eu 3+ -doped Sr 2 (Al 1−x Mg x )(Al 1−x Si 1+x )O 7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solution phosphor, which was successfully synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction. The crystal structure remained the same group, P-42 1 m , with controlling chemical compositions. The excitation peaks shifted between 263 and 270 nm and emission peaks shifted between 612 and 614 nm with a decreasing Stocks shift in overall tendency. The shift trend was clarified by Crystal Field Theory. The energy band structure and density of states of Sr 2 Al 2 SiO 7 and Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 were calculated by Density Functional Theory using the generalized gradient approximation. The band gap was also analyzed by diffuse reflectance spectrum as a contrast. The morphology was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the photoluminescence color of phosphors could be tuned from yellow to orange.

Abstract:A propylene oxide (PO)-driven fast sol-gel route followed with a post high temperature calcination were utilized to synthesize CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ cationic solid solution phosphors with micro-spherical morphologies and improved internal quantum efficiencies. The polyethylene oxide (PEO) was also employed to induce the phase separation of CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ precursors to get monodispersed spherical morphologies in the sol-gel system. Benefit from uniform copolymerization of each chemical components and pyrolysis of organic matter, Ca, Sr, Al and O were homogenously distributed in the produced CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ cage like microspheres. It helps to efficiently trap incident light and to improve the PL efficiencies. By changing the ratio of Ca/Sr, infinite solid solution polycrystalline phosphors, CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ microspheres with x = 0~1, can be obtained and their PL emission can be gradually tuned from green to white to blue. Micro-spherical SrAl2O4: Eu2+, CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ and CaAl2O4: Eu2+ phosphors exhibited internal quantum efficiencies as high as 71.1, 35.3~45.9 and 75.3%, respectively.

Abstract:The promising green oxynitride phosphor, Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+, was synthesized at 1350 degrees C for 5 hours under a reducing N-2/H-2 (5%) atmosphere via the solid-state reaction method. The XRD patterns confirm the formation of the pure phase of Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+. With an increase in x, the emission spectra shift from 525 nm to 536 nm under near-UV (n-UV) excitation. Accordingly, we propose the underlying mechanisms for the red-shift of the emission spectra by adjusting the cation composition in the host. The influence of the size mismatch on the thermal quenching is also observed. The as-prepared green phosphor exhibits great thermal quenching property, with the remaining 83% of the initial emission intensity measured at 150 degrees C. The quantum efficiency is measured to be 35.2%. All the results indicate that the Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+ can be a good candidate phosphor applicable to n-UV light-emitting diodes for solid-state lighting.
Governing the crystallographic sites for tuning Eu2+ emission in an apatite oxyfluoride host to be applied for superior white light emitting diodes

Abstract:Single white light-emitting phosphors for near-UV-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are the best alternatives to tricolour phosphor blends and blue light converted yellow-emitting garnets. Nevertheless, achieving white light with elevated colour rendering (CRI) from a single-phase phosphor activated with a lone activator ion is a major challenge. This study aimed at the generation of white light from a single-phase composition activated only with europium. The study started with structural evaluations of Eu3+-activated Ca4La6Si6O24F2 phosphors using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Eu3+ photoluminescence to elucidate the local environment of rare-earth ions and the symmetric nature of the lattice sites. Ca4La6Si6O24F2 crystallized in the hexagonal P63/m space group. The predominant 5D0-7F2 electric dipole transition at 614 nm, and the non-splitting as well as the zero-shifting behaviour of 5D0-7F0 at 578 nm, suggested that the rare-earth ionic substitutions preferably took place at the larger asymmetric sites. Introducing Sr2+ ions in Ca4La6Si6O24F2:Eu3+/Eu2+ that is synthesized under a reducing atmosphere suppressed Eu3+ emission. From the optimized Ca1.98Sr1.98La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+, a sequence of M2+-codoped (M = Mg/Ba) Ca1.98Sr1.98La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+ phosphors were further developed. The substitutions of Mg2+ and Ba2+ altered the crystal field by changing the lattice parameters. The Mg2+ -doped samples showed a blue-shift from 520 nm (Mg2+ = 0) to 471 nm (Mg2+ = 1.0), whereas the Ba2+-doped compositions showed a red-shift from 520 nm (Ba2+ = 0) to 536 nm (Ba2+ = 1.2). The change of symmetry owing to the Mg2+/Ba2+ substitution could have led to the centroid shift, which was responsible for the blue- or red-shift of the emission spectra. The XRD of Ca1.38Sr1.38La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+,1.2Ba2+ indicated a Ba2+-induced lattice site expansion. Keeping this in view, the Eu2+ ions concentrations were further enhanced from 0.04 to 0.3, and the resultant photoluminescence was further enhanced and red-shifted. The optimized sample showed better intensity compared with the commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ and exhibited decent photoluminescence above 70% at 150 °C as compared with that at room temperature. Finally, several prototype WLEDs were fabricated using the single phosphor Ca1.365Sr1.365La6Si6O24F2:0.07Eu2+,1.2Ba2+ with near-UV and violet-LED chips. The outcomes indicated the promising nature of this single-composition phosphor for indoor lighting.
Intense Red Light Emission Of Eu3+-Doped Sr3b2sio8 For White Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Intense red-emitting phosphors Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 were synthesized via high-temperature solid-state reactions. The crystal structure, luminescent properties, and quantum efficiencies of the as-prepared phosphors, as well as their luminescent thermal quenching capabilities and CIE coordinates were investigated for the first time. The results indicated that Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 phosphors could be efficiently excited by the near-ultraviolet light (394 nm) to realize a novel red luminescence corresponding to the electric dipole transition D-5(0)-F-7(2) of Eu3+ ions. Based on the theoretical calculation, the dipole-dipole interaction was dominantly involved in the mechanism of concentration quenching of Eu3+ in the phosphors, and the activation energy for thermal quenching (Delta E) was determined to be 0.214 eV. The effects of charge compensation on the luminescence behaviors of Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8, where M+ represented a monovalent cation like Li+, Na+, or K+ acting as a charge compensator, were also investigated. The composition-optimized Sr2.80Eu0.10Na0.10B2SiO8 exhibited the preferable CIE coordinates of (0.644, 0.350), whose integrated intensity was calculated to be 1.7 times of that of the commercial red phosphor Y1.90Eu0.10O2S. These results suggest that Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 phosphors are competitive as the promising red-emitting phosphor-converted materials for white light-emitting diodes. Dual-strategy of Eu2+ sensitization and Ca2+ substitution improves the luminescence properties of phosphor Sr2La8(SiO4)6O2:Eu

Abstract:A series of novel orange-red phosphors Sr1.9-x Ca x La8(SiO4)6O2:0.1Eu(2+,3+) (0≤ x ≤ 1.9, Δx=0.3) were successfully prepared via high-temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure, fluorescence spectral characteristics, thermal stability, fluorescence lifetime, morphological characteristics and Eu valence state of the phosphor were systematically studied. The successful introduction of Eu2+ broadened the excitation spectrum of Sr1.9-x Ca x La8(SiO4)6O2:0.1Eu(2+,3+) by more than 100 nm and increased the fluorescence intensity by 200%, realizing the energy transfer between Eu2+ and Eu3+. The fluorescence intensity of Sr0.4Ca1.5La8(SiO4)6O2:0.1Eu(2+,3+) is increased by 551% through the Ca2+ substitution strategy, and the Ca2+ enters the matrix lattice, which promotes the reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ and improves the energy transfer efficiency. The emission intensity of Sr0.4Ca1.5La8(SiO4)6O2:0.1Eu(2+,3+) remained at 70.29% at 418 K. The color coordinates of Sr1.9-x Ca x La8(SO4)6O2:0.1Eu(2+,3+) are all located in the orange-red region, the color coordinates are about (0.59, 0.40), and the color temperature are about 2100 K. Therefore, the excellent optical properties of this series of phosphors make them have potential practical value in the LED field.

Abstract:Exploring oxide-based red-emitting phosphors is essential for improving the color rendering index (R a ) and reducing the correlated color temperature (CCT) of white-light-emitting diode (LED) lighting sources. Especially, it is challenging to design Eu2+ red emission in inorganic solids. Here, the Eu2+-activated oxide phosphor Sr2LaGaO5:Eu2+ was synthesized with red emission peaking at 618 nm under 450 nm excitation. The crystal structure and spectral analysis indicate that Eu2+ tends to occupy [Sr1/LaO8] polyhedrons with a smaller coordination number, resulting in a large crystal field splitting at the 5d level and realizing the broadband 4f–5d red emission. When Sr is substituted by Ba atoms, density functional theory calculations verify that Ba tends to enter [Sr2O10] with a large coordination number, further giving rise to the lattice distortion and a giant spectral redshift (618–800 nm). The white LED device fabricated by mixing red Sr1.8Ba0.2GaO5:Eu2+ and green Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphors exhibits a high color rendering index (R a = 92.1) and a low color-dependent temperature (CCT = 4570 K). This study will give guidance for exploring new Eu2+ activated oxide-based red phosphors as well as achieving tunable emission through cations’ substitution.

Abstract:Sr2SiO4:Eu2+ phosphors were synthesized by a conventional solid state reaction method. After a low amount of nitrogen (similar to 1 mol% of oxygen) was incorporated to modify the local coordination environment of Eu2+, the phosphor showed a single intense broad band emission centered at 625 nm under blue light (453 nm) excitation, and three emission bands (480, 555 and 625 nm) under ultraviolet irradiation. The incorporation of nitrogen was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and absorption spectroscopy. 480 and 555 nm emissions originated from Eu2+ ions occupying the Sr(I) sites and Sr(II) sites in the Sr2SiO4 crystal, respectively, while 625 nm emission originated from the nitrogen coordinated Eu2+ ions. The local coordination structure around Eu2+ ions in the red phosphors was analyzed with the aid of density functional theory based first principles calculations. The analysis showed that nitrogen should preferentially substitute the O5' sites around Eu2+ in Sr(II) sites, which agreed fairly well with the experimental results from the X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. The electronic structure analysis confirmed the lowered center of gravity of Eu 5d energy states and the broadened Eu 4f energy states, which are due to the tightened coordination environment and the hybridization of the 4f states of Eu and 2p states of nitrogen-oxygen, leading to a red emission. The novel nitrogen modified Sr2SiO4:Eu2+ could serve as a full color phosphor for near-UV LEDs or a red-emitting phosphor for blue LEDs.

Abstract:In this work, tunable emission from green to red and the inverse tuning from red to green in alpha'(L)-(Ca, Sr)(2)SiO4:Eu2+ phosphors were demonstrated magically by varying the incorporation content of Eu2+ and Sr2+ ions, respectively. The tunable emission properties and the tuning mechanism of red-shift resulting from the Eu2+ content as well as that of blue-shift induced by the Sr2+ content were investigated in detail. As a result of fine-controlling the incorporation content of Eu2+, the emission peak red-shifts from 541 nm to 640 nm. On the other hand, the emission peak inversely blue-shifts from 640 nm to 546 nm through fine-adjusting the incorporation content of Sr2+. The excellent tuning characteristics for alpha'(L)-(Ca, Sr)(2)SiO4:Eu2+ phosphors presented in this work exhibited their various application prospects in solid-state lighting combining with a blue chip or a near-UV chip.
Photoluminescence Evolution and High Thermal Stability of Orange Red-Emitting Ba3-xSrxZnNb2O9: Eu3+ Phosphors

Abstract:A series of Ba3-xSrxZnNb2O9: 0.3Eu(3+) (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3) orange-red phosphors were synthesized by high-temperature solid-phase reaction. In order to identify and describe the crystal structure, luminescence characteristics and thermal stability of the samples, XRD and luminescence spectroscopy tests were carried out. The refined XRD results showed that Eu3+ ions have been successfully doped into Ba3-xSrxZnNb2O9 matrix and occupied partly the sites of Eu3+ ions. Under UV excitation of 396 nm, the emission spectra of the samples are composed of two emission peaks near 593 nm and 612 nm with a slight blue shift, attributed to the increase in splitting degree of 5d electron orbit of Eu3+ ions. At 523 K, the thermal stabilities of phosphors with Sr2+ ion doping concentration of 2 and 3 are 82.14% and 84.33%, respectively. With the increase of Sr2+ ion concentration, the activation energy increases from 0.198 eV to 0.230 eV, better than the other reports. In addition, the CCT (below 2000 K) and color purity (above 95%) of the samples are calculated. A WLED device can be obtained by combining the as-prepared orange red-emitting phosphor with commercial blue (BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+) and green ((Sr, Ba)(2)SiO4: Eu2+) phosphors. All these indicated that the self-made phosphors are promising to be used in UV/n-UV pumped WLEDs requiring low CCT.
Deep‐Red (Sr,Ba)Lu2O4: Eu2+ Phosphor for Full‐Spectrum Lighting

Abstract:Developing violet‐light‐excitable deep‐red (650∽660 nm) Eu2+ activated phosphor is essential for full‐spectrum lighting. However, the related phosphors with facile synthesis, excellent optical performance and superior thermal stability are scarce. Herein, we report a new class of (Sr,Ba)Lu2O4: Eu2+ deep‐red phosphor (660 nm) excitable by violet light via Ba2+‐induced local structure engineering. Impressively, tunable emission from 615 nm to 682 nm, accompanied with significant improvement of thermal stability (81%@423K), is achieved by partially substituting Sr2+ by Ba2+ in SrLu2O4: Eu2+. Crystal‐field analysis, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra confirm that the strong distortion and enhanced covalency of [EuO6] octahedron are responsible for spectral tunability and the formation of shallow trapping states is beneficial for electron compensation to inhibit thermal quenching in the Sr0.85Ba0.15Lu2O4: Eu2+ phosphor. Finally, a white light‐emitting diode (wLED) prototype fabricated by coupling the Sr0.85Ba0.15Lu2O4: Eu2+ deep‐red phosphor and commercial blue/green phosphors with violet chip can yield sunlight‐like white light with an ultra‐high color rendering index (CRI: Ra=95.2, R9=97.0) and an appropriate correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4121 K, verifying its significant application potential in full‐spectrum solid‐state lighting. Abstract:Cyan-emitting phosphor is urgently needed to address the "cyan gap" in artificial full-spectrum lighting. In this research, a series of Sr(2-y)BayY4La4(SiO4)6O2:xEu2+ (0.005 ≤ x ≤ 0.08, 0.0 ≤ y ≤ 2.0) phosphors with tunable luminescence were synthesized. Through cation regulation, the luminescent color of Sr(2-y)BayY4La4(SiO4)6O2:xEu2+ can be adjusted from yellow to cyan. Crystal structure analysis revealed that Eu2+ ions simultaneously occupy [Sr1/Ba1Y1La1] and [Sr2/Ba2Y2La2] sites, resulting in multiple luminescent centers and a broadened emission spectrum. With the increase in Ba2+ ion concentration, the PLE spectrum was red-shifted from 337 nm to 372 nm, and the excitation intensity in the violet region was significantly enhanced, making it more compatible with violet LED chips. Meanwhile, the PL spectrum was blue-shifted from 543 nm to 496 nm with increasing Ba2+ concentration, accompanied by about 10 times increase in the excitation and emission intensity. The optimized Ba2Y4La4(SiO4)6O2:0.02Eu2+ phosphor can be excited by violet light and emits bright cyan light effectively, which can be used to fill the "cyan gap". Eventually, a series of white LED devices were manufactured by combining the as-prepared luminescence tunable phosphors and commercial phosphors. Among them, the 410 nm violet LED chip-based WLED(Ba2) device comprising Ba2Y4La4(SiO4)6O2:0.02Eu2+ exhibited the best electroluminescence performance, increasing the color rendering index from 82.0 to 98.6, verifying the compensation effect of the Ba2Y4La4(SiO4)6O2:Eu2+ phosphor on cyan light.

Novel orange-red phosphor Sr3Al2Si3O12:Eu3+ excited by ultraviolet or blue light with excellent thermal stability and color purity

Abstract:It is still a challenge to develop orange-red phosphors with high performance, good thermal stability and high color purity. We successfully designed and synthesized aseries of novel orange-red phosphors Sr3-2 x Al2Si3O12:xEu3+,xLi+ (0.04 ≤ x ≤ 0.18), which can be effectively excited by ultraviolet and bluelight. The fluorescence emission spectra of phosphors Sr3-2 x Al2Si3O12:xEu3+,xLi+ are composed of several peaks at 500–750 nm, which belong to the electronic transition of 5D0→7FJ (J = 0,1,2,3,4) of Eu3+. Phosphor Sr2.8Al2Si3O12:0.1Eu3+,0.1Li+ has excellent thermal stability, when the temperature is as high as 418 K, the fluorescence emission intensity remains 77.81%, and the activation energy Ea = 0.2665 eV. The color coordinates of phosphors Sr3-2 x Al2Si3O12:xEu3+,xLi+ are all located in the orange-red region (0.58,0.40), and the color purity is as high as 97.52%. These results show that phosphor Sr2.8Al2Si3O12:0.1Eu3+,0.1Li+ is a potential orange-red phosphor which can be effectively excited by ultraviolet light and blue light to obtain white light.

Abstract:(Ba,Sr)(3)MgSi2O8:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphors with 430/505/660 nm tri-bands or 430/660 nm dual-bands emission were demonstrated in this work by controlling the appearence or not of green emitting intermediate phases, (Ba,Sr)(2)SiO4:Eu2+. Through varying the stoichiometric amount of SiO2 in precursor, the coexistence of green emitting intermediate phase tended to be sensitive and diversified. Laser Microzone Raman spectrum was employed to look insight into the lattice stretch and the preferential occupation sites of Ba2+ ions in Sr3MgSi2O8 lattices. The local structure and the crystal field of Eu2+ luminescent centers were found to be disturbed by distorted arrangement of cross-linked [MgO6] octahedra and [SiO4] tetrahedra. This mechanism approach provided some new insights to further understanding the adjustment strategy of green emitting intermediate phases in (Ba,Sr)(3)MgSi2O8:Eu2+, Mn2* phosphor potentially applied as red/blue dual-bands emitting or red/green/blue tri-bands emitting materials. Abstract:The Eu2+ and Dy3+ co-activated Ca–Sr feldspar solid solution compounds, (Ca0.98−xSrx)Al2Si2O8:Eu0.01,Dy0.01 (x=0–0.98), have been prepared by solid-state reaction in weak reductive atmosphere. The fluorescence spectra showed that the emission peaks of these phosphors shifts to shorter wavelength with an increase of Sr2+ solid solution quantity and correspondingly the afterglow color changes from blue to purple. All the changes can be attributed to the various crystal fields around Eu2+ ions. The afterglow with special short wavelength in near ultraviolet region can be obtained by adjusting the host chemical composition.
A First-Principles Explanation of the Luminescent Line Shape of SrLiAl$_3$N$_4$:Eu$^{2+}$ Phosphor for Light-Emitting Diode Applications

Abstract:White light-emitting diodes are gaining popularity and are set to become the most common light source in the U.S. by 2025. However, their performance is still limited by the lack of an efficient red-emitting component with a narrow band emission. The red phosphor SrLiAl$_3$N$_4$:Eu$^{2+}$ is among the first promising phosphors with a small bandwidth for next-generation lighting, but the microscopic origin of this narrow emission remains elusive. In the present work, density functional theory, the $\Delta$SCF-constrained occupation method, and a generalized Huang-Rhys theory are used to provide an accurate description of the vibronic processes occurring at the two Sr$^{2+}$ sites that the Eu$^{2+}$ activator can occupy. The emission band shape of Eu(Sr1), with a zero-phonon line at 1.906 eV and a high luminescence intensity, is shown to be controlled by the coupling between the 5d$_{z^2}$-4f electronic transition and the low-frequency phonon modes associated with the Sr and Eu displacements along the Sr channel. The good agreement between our computations and experimental results allows us to provide a structural assignment of the observed total spectrum. By computing explicitly the effect of the thermal expansion on zero-phonon line energies, the agreement is extended to the temperature-dependent spectrum. These results provide insight into the electron-phonon coupling that accompanies the 5d-4f transition in similar UCr$_4$C$_4$-type phosphors. Furthermore, these results highlight the importance of the Sr channel in shaping the narrow emission of SrLiAl$_3$N$_4$:Eu$^{2+}$, and they shed new light on the structure-property relations of such phosphors.
