Abstract:Phosphorus is an essential element influencing both food security via plant fertilization, and water pollution through excessive phosphorus use, yet the phosphorus cycle in ecosystems is poorly known. In particular, beyond adsorption, the role of iron and manganese oxides in catalyzing the abiotic dephosphorylation of biomolecules is debated. Here, we studied the reactions of ribonucleotides, containing different phosphate bonding, with goethite, hematite, and birnessite. We employed both high-resolution mass spectrometry of solution species and molecular modeling simulations of ribonucleotide-mineral complexes. Results disclose an up to fivefold preferential hydrolytic cleavage of a phosphoanhydride bond over a phosphoester bond, indicating that mineral-catalyzed reactions reflect the hierarchy reported for the activity of phosphatase enzymes. The fourfold higher catalytic reactivity of goethite and birnessite versus hematite is explained by mineral-specific binding rather than surface area differences. Corresponding simulated adsorbate conformations at the water–mineral interfaces are proposed. Overall, our findings provide new insights on the catalytic recycling of organic phosphorus species by mineral oxides.

The microbial cycling of phosphorus on long-term fertilized soil: Insights from phosphate oxygen isotope ratios

Abstract:Microorganisms mobilize phosphorus (P) from soil and make it available for plants. However, the role of microbial activity in soil P dynamics especially among different P pools is poorly understood largely due to methodological limitations. In this study, we analyzed the oxygen isotope ratios in phosphate (δ18OP) of sequentially extracted inorganic P (Pi) pools (H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi, NaOH-Pi, and HCl-Pi) in a long-term agricultural research field in Henan, China with different fertilization histories and coupled with soil enzyme activity and P-cycling bacteria gene abundance studies. Results showed the dominant enzymes were alkaline phosphatase (APase) and phosphodiesterase (PDE), and the functional genes for P-cycling were bpp, cphy, phoX and pqqC. After long-term P fertilization, the δ18OP values of H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi and NaOH-Pi pools approached to or achieved equilibrium, suggesting that the externally applied P was actively mobilized and cycled by soil microorganisms and speciated into different P pools. Based on the extent of isotope excursion among different Pi pools, the equilibrium fractionation oriented the source signature in the NaHCO3-Pi and NaOH-Pi pools, and HCl-Pi pool could be derived from P fertilizer but through multistep reactions, and mixed with the HCl-Pi from rock weathering product, which constituted HCl-Pi pool in the non-P treatments. Overall, the long-term P fertilization especially the balanced fertilization with nitrogen (N), P and potassium (K) was found to be beneficial for extensive utilization of soil P with abundant biological uptake and cell-internal Pi cycling. Variation partitioning analysis (VPA) indicated that the expression of functional genes may be stimulated to mobilize soil P under specific P pools distribution in this alkaline environment. Overall, our findings provide new insights to understand the roles of microbial activities in soil P biogeochemistry that are useful for agricultural P sustainability.
Organic Matter Accelerated Microbial Iron Reduction and Available Phosphorus Release in Reflooded Paddy Soils

Abstract:The cycling of soil phosphorus (P) is inherently linked with soil organic carbon-iron (C-Fe) cycling, yet empirical integration of these processes within paddy soils remains scarce. In this study, we conducted a microcosm experiment using paddy soils subjected to six distinct fertilization regimes involving varying P inputs for five years. In addition to evaluating P activation under reflooding conditions, we assessed the Fe reduction process and characterized the properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) at the molecular level using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), alongside profiling the composition of soil microbial communities with high-throughput sequencing. Our findings revealed that after 25 days of reflooding, soil Olsen-P content increased by an average of 73% compared to its initial state, showing a strong correlation with the Fe reduction process. Specifically, treatments involving pig manure application exhibited higher Fe reduction rates and enhanced P activation, highlighting the role of organic matter in facilitating Fe reduction. Investigations on the relative abundance of typical iron-reducing microbes further supported their importance in P activation, but the rate of iron reduction is limited by soil organic matter content. Delving deeper into DOM properties, soil DOM composition profiling and network analysis suggested that high-molecular-weight DOM, particularly lignins, served as the primary resources driving Fe reduction by iron-reducing microbes, consequently promoting Fe reduction and P release. Taken together, our study assembled the C-Fe-P cycling dynamics in paddy soils, emphasizing the pivotal role of microbial-driven Fe reduction facilitated by soil DOM in P availability and subsequently sustainable agricultural practices.
Elucidating the redox cycle of environmental phosphorus using ion chromatography

Abstract:Historically, it was assumed that reactive, inorganic phosphorus present in pristine environments was solely in the form of orthophosphate. However, this assumption contradicts theories of biogenesis and the observed metabolic behavior of select microorganisms. This paper discusses the role of ion chromatography (IC) in elucidating the oxidation-reduction cycle of environmental phosphorus. These methods employ suppressed-IC, coupled with tandem conductivity and electrospray mass spectrometry detectors to identify and quantify phosphorus oxyanions in natural water, synthetic cosmochemical, and biological samples. These techniques have been used to detect phosphite and orthophosphate in geothermal hot springs. Hypophosphite, phosphite, and orthophosphate have been detected in synthetic schreibersite corrosion samples, and termite extract supernatant. Synthetic schreibersite corrosion samples were also analyzed for two poly-phosphorus compounds, hypophosphate and pyrophosphate, and results show these samples did not contain concentrations above the 1.3 and 2.0 μM respective 3σ limit of detection. These methods are readily adaptable to a variety of matrices, and contribute to the elucidation of the oxidation-reduction cycle of phosphorus oxyanions in the environment. In contrast to most studies, these techniques have been used to show that phosphorus actively participates in redox processes in both the biological and geological world.
Hydrolysis of Phosphate Esters Catalyzed by Inorganic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Acting as Biocatalysts

Abstract:Phosphorus ester hydrolysis is one of the key chemical processes in biological systems, including signaling, free-energy transaction, protein synthesis, and maintaining the integrity of genetic material. Hydrolysis of this otherwise kinetically stable phosphoester and/or phosphoanhydride bond is induced by enzymes such as purple acid phosphatase. Here, I report that, as in previously reported aged inorganic iron ion solutions, the iron oxide nanoparticles in the solution, which are trapped in a dialysis membrane tube filled with the various iron oxides, significantly promote the hydrolysis of the various phosphate esters, including the inorganic polyphosphates, with enzyme-like kinetics. This observation, along with those of recent studies of iron oxide, vanadium pentoxide, and molybdenum trioxide nanoparticles that behave as mimics of peroxidase, bromoperoxidase, and sulfite oxidase, respectively, indicates that the oxo-metal bond in the oxide nanoparticles is critical for the function of these corresponding natural metalloproteins. These inorganic biocatalysts challenge the traditional concept of replicator-first scenarios and support the metabolism-first hypothesis. As biocatalysts, these inorganic nanoparticles with enzyme-like activity may work in natural terrestrial environments and likely were at work in early Earth environments as well. They may have played an important role in the C, H, O, S, and P metabolic pathway with regard to the emergence and early evolution of life. Acute megakaryocytic leukemia with the t(1;22)(p13;q13).

Abstract:Acute megakaryocytic leukemia (AMKL) was defined as a new subtype of acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) by the French-American-British (FAB) Cooperative Group in 1985. The first consistent chromosomal anomaly described in this subset of ANLL was the translocation t(1;22)(p13;q13) which appears to be restricted to this FAB-subtype (FAB-M7) of AML. To our knowledge, 18 AMKL cases with the t(1;22) have been reported until now in the literature. In all instances, the patients were very young children with only one beyond the infant age (12 months) at the time of diagnosis. Based on the results of two reports in which the frequency of this translocation was assessed, the t(1;22) may be estimated to occur in about 30% of pediatric patients with FAB-ANLL subtype M7. In infants with this subset of ANLL, the t(1;22) seems to be present in the majority (> 65%) of cases. The detection of this nonrandom chromosomal abnormality may therefore provide an additional diagnostic marker in children with AMKL. Herein we review and discuss the clinical and cytogenetic findings in patients with AMKL and the t(1;22).
Microbial Phosphorus Mobilization Strategies Across a Natural Nutrient Limitation Gradient and Evidence for Linkage With Iron Solubilization Traits

Abstract:Microorganisms have evolved several mechanisms to mobilize and mineralize occluded and insoluble phosphorus (P), thereby promoting plant growth in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the linkages between microbial P-solubilization traits and the preponderance of insoluble P in natural ecosystems are not well known. We tested the P solubilization traits of hundreds of culturable bacteria representative of the rhizosphere from a natural gradient where P concentration and bioavailability decline as soil becomes progressively more weathered. Aluminum, iron phosphate and organic P (phytate) were expected to dominate in more weathered soils. A defined cultivation medium with these chemical forms of P was used for isolation. A combination of soil chemical, spectroscopic analyses and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were used to understand the in situ ability for solubilization of these predominant forms of P. Locations with more occluded and organic P harbored the greatest abundance of P-mobilizing microorganisms, especially Burkholderiaceae ( Caballeronia and Paraburkholderia spp.). Nearly all bacteria utilized aluminum phosphate, however fewer could subsist on iron phosphate (FePO 4 ) or phytate. Microorganisms isolated from phytic acid were also most effective at solubilizing FePO 4 , suggesting that phytate solubilization may be linked to the ability to solubilize Fe. Significantly, we observed Fe to be co-located with P in organic patches in soil. Siderophore addition in lab experiments reinstated phytase mediated P-solubilization from Fe-phytate complexes. Taken together, these results indicate that metal-organic-P complex formation may limit enzymatic P solubilization from phytate in soil. Additionally, the linked traits of phytase and siderophore production were mostly restricted to specific clades within the Burkholderiaceae . We propose that Fe complexation of organic P (e.g., phytate) represents a major constraint on P turnover and availability in acidic soils, as only a limited subset of bacteria appear to possess the traits required to access this persistent pool of soil P.

Abstract:Phosphorous (P) cycling is often closely coupled to iron (Fe), particularly following mineral weathering or in hydromorphic soils where Fe redox reactions can control the equilibrium between P retention and release. While surface adsorption of P on Fe (hydr)oxides is a well-known and widely studied process, less attention has been devoted to the understanding of P (especially organic P) coprecipitation following Fe(II) oxidative precipitation. In this work we synthesized and followed the kinetics of a series of Fe-P systems with increasing P/Fe ratio, prepared by either surface adsorption on ferrihydrite (Fh) or oxidative coprecipitation of Fe(II) with inorganic phosphate (Pi), inositol hexaphosphate (myoInsP6) or phosphatidylcholine (PC). The obtained materials were characterized for P and Fe contents, specific surface area (SSA), porosity and surface charge. XRD, TEM, XPS and IR techniques were used to investigate their properties. P retention by coprecipitation was generally greater with respect to adsorption, especially at the highest initial P/Fe ratio. Inorganic phosphate caused interference and poisoning of the crystallization process, slowing down Fe(II) oxidation and precipitation rates at low P/Fe ratios, with the formation of nanometric particles and phosphate concentrated on their surface. With increasing P loadings, more aggregated particles with a lower SSA and greater porosity were obtained. Aside from precipitation, the retention mechanisms also involved adsorption and/or inclusion of Pi within the particles. myoInsP6, on the other hand, contributed to accelerating the precipitation of Fe, leading to coprecipitates bearing the organic P compound within the structure, and was retained by precipitation and adsorption mechanisms. Conversely, irrespective of the P/Fe ratio, PC did not influence the rate of Fe(II) oxidation and precipitation due to its hydrophobic character. The prevailing mechanism involved in its retention during coprecipitation was physical retention on the surface, leading to a drastic decrease of SSA and pore volume. Coprecipitation is thus a complex process, involving several mechanisms as a function of the P species and initial P/Fe ratio, and further contributing to the stabilization and selective accumulation of myoInsP6 in soil with respect to other organic P forms.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for sustaining life and agricultural production. Transformation of readily available P into forms that are unavailable to plants adds costs to P replenishment, which eventually translates into lower agronomic benefits and potential loss of soil P into runoff may degrade water quality. Therefore, understanding the sources and pathways of the formation of residual P pools in soils is useful information needed for the development of any technological or management efforts to minimize or inhibit the formation of such P pool and thus maximize availability to plants. In this research, we paired phosphate oxygen isotope ratios (δ18OP) with solid-state 31P NMR and quantitative XRD techniques along with general soil chemistry methods to identify the precipitation pathways of acid-extracted inorganic P (Pi) pools in an agricultural soil. Based on the comparison of isotope values of 0.5 mol L−1 NaOH-Pi, 1 mol L−1 HCl-Pi, and 10 mol L−1 HNO3-Pi pools and correlations of associated elements (Ca, Fe, and Al) in these pools, the HNO3-Pi pool appears most likely to be transformed from the NaOH-Pi pool. A narrow range of isotope values of acid-Pi pools in shallow (tilling depth) and below (where physical mixing is absent) is intriguing but likely suggests leaching of particle-bound P in deeper soils. Overall, these findings provide an improved understanding of the sources, transport, and transformation of acid-Pi pools in agricultural soils and further insights into the buildup of legacy P in soils.
Underestimation of phosphorus fraction change in the supernatant after phosphorus adsorption onto iron oxides and iron oxide-natural organic matter complexes

Abstract:The phosphorus (P) fraction distribution and formation mechanism in the supernatant after P adsorption onto iron oxides and iron oxide-humic acid (HA) complexes were analyzed using the ultrafiltration method in this study. With an initial P concentration of 20mg/L (I=0.01mol/L and pH=7), it was shown that the colloid (1kDa-0.45μm) component of P accounted for 10.6%, 11.6%, 6.5%, and 4.0% of remaining total P concentration in the supernatant after P adsorption onto ferrihydrite (FH), goethite (GE), ferrihydrite-humic acid complex (FH-HA), goethite-humic acid complex (GE-HA), respectively. The <1kDa component of P was still the predominant fraction in the supernatant, and underestimated colloidal P accounted for 2.2%, 55.1%, 45.5%, and 38.7% of P adsorption onto the solid surface of FH, FH-HA, GE and GE-HA, respectively. Thus, the colloid P could not be neglected. Notably, it could be interpreted that Fe3+ hydrolysis from the adsorbents followed by the formation of colloidal hydrous ferric oxide aggregates was the main mechanism for the formation of the colloid P in the supernatant. And colloidal adsorbent particles co-existing in the supernatant were another important reason for it. Additionally, dissolve organic matter dissolved from iron oxide-HA complexes could occupy large adsorption sites of colloidal iron causing less colloid P in the supernatant. Ultimately, we believe that the findings can provide a new way to deeply interpret the geochemical cycling of P, even when considering other contaminants such as organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, and arsenate at the sediment/soil-water interface in the real environment.
New Insights into the Microbial-Driven Metal Reductive Dissolution for Enhanced Phosphorus Release from Iron-Rich Sludge

Abstract:The extraction of phosphorus (P) from iron-rich sludge is a critical step for P recovery process. The acidogenic phosphorus release (APR) process was proved as a cost-effective and environmental-friendly method to separate and release Fe–P from iron-rich sludge, including primary sludge and activated sludge. However, the role of bacteria in this microbial-driven metal reductive dissolution approach was not clear. This study aimed to reveal the mechanism of microbial cooperation during APR process. The P release fraction could achieve as high as 63.2% from iron-rich primary sludge. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicon was conducted to characterize the functional microorganisms participating in APR process, including hydrolytic bacteria Prevotella, acidogens Selenomonas, Bacteroides, Lactococcus, Tolumonas, and iron-reducing bacteria Aeromonas and Sulfurospirillum. Microbial iron reduction and acidogenic fermentation were identified as two critical biological reactions in APR process. A two-phase temporal succession of bacterial community was characterized in batch APR process. The strong positive relationship between iron-reducing bacteria and acidogens was revealed by network analysis. This study successfully proved that bacteria-mediating metal reductive dissolution approach could efficiently release the reducible metal compounds (such as Fe–P) from complex mixture, which can be extended to many other scenarios regarding resource extraction and recovery.
Enrichment of Phosphate on Ferrous Iron Phases during Bio-Reduction of Ferrihydrite

Abstract:The reduction of less stable ferric hydroxides and formation of ferrous phases is critical for the fate of phosphorus in anaerobic soils and sediments. The interaction between ferrous iron and phosphate was investigated experimentally during the reduction of synthetic ferrihydrite with natural organic materials as carbon source. Ferrihydrite was readily reduced by dissimilatory iron reducing bacteria (DIRB) with between 52% and 73% Fe(III) converted to Fe(II) after 31 days, higher than without DIRB. Formation of ferrous phases was linearly coupled to almost complete removal of both aqueous and exchangeable phosphate. Simple model calculations based on the incubation data suggested ferrous phases bound phosphate with a molar ratio of Fe(II):P between 1.14 - 2.25 or a capacity of 246 - 485 mg·P·g-1 Fe(II). XRD analysis indicated that the ratio of Fe(II): P was responsible for the precipitation of vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O), a dominant Fe(II) phosphate mineral in incubation systems. When the ratio of Fe(II):P was more than 1.5, the precipitation of Fe(II) phosphate was soundly crystallized to vivianite. Thus, reduction of ferric iron provides a mechanism for the further removal of available phosphate via the production of ferrous phases, with anaerobic soils and sediments potentially exhibiting a higher capacity to bind phosphate than some aerobic systems.

Abstract:The aqueous alteration of the oceanic lithosphere provides significant energy that impacts the synthesis and diversity of organic compounds, which are crucial for the deep carbon cycle and may have provided the first building blocks for life. Although abiotic organic synthesis has been documented in mantle-derived rocks, the formation mechanisms and complexity of organic compounds in crustal rocks remain largely unknown. Here, we show the specific association of aliphatic carbonaceous matter with Fe oxyhydroxides in mafic crustal rocks of the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR). We determine potential Fe-based pathways for abiotic organic synthesis from CO2 and H2 using multimodal and molecular nano-geochemical tools. Quantum mechanical modeling is further employed to constrain the catalytical activity of Fe oxyhydroxides, revealing that the catalytic cycle of hydrogen may play a key role in carbon-carbon bond formation. This approach offers the possibility of interpreting physicochemical organic formation and condensation mechanisms at an atomic scale. The findings expand our knowledge of the existence of abiotic organic carbon in the oceanic crustal rocks and emphasize the mafic oceanic crust of the SWIR as a potential site for low-temperature abiotic organic synthesis.

Abstract:Elevated phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations in agricultural drainage are responsible for widespread declines in water quality across freshwater and marine receiving environments worldwide. Removal of P at source is particularly important because its tight biogeochemical cycling with iron (Fe), leads to preferential P −retention (over N) across the aquatic continuum, particularly in lake basins. This paper introduces new Fe−C−based composites (Fe(III)oxide/akaganite) designed for use in edge-of-field mitigations such as denitrifying bioreactors, with the goal of intercepting and retaining P on−farm. Our Fe−functionalised media had a net positive charge in the favourable range for P adsorption under the typical pH conditions encountered in denitrifying bioreactors (pH 5.5 − 6). Although functionalized wood (Fe-WC) had significantly higher P adsorption capacity than functionalised biochar (Fe-PyOM), 65.8 mg g -1 and 31.4 mg g -1 , respectively; this was of comparable magnitude to powdered akaganite (107 mg g -1 ), despite large differences in particle size. Batch and column adsorption experiments indicate a multi−layer adsorption mechanism for P removal on Fe−PyOM and Fe−WC, which was further investigated using XPS, confirming dominant electrostatic P binding by Fe-functionalised media below pH 6, but an increasing importance of ligand exchange (Fe-O-P) at pH 8, particularly for Fe-PyOM. Based on the prevailing geochemistry of influent solutions to DBRs (pe ⁓ -8, pH ⁓ 6), we suggest that Fe−PyOM may be able to continuously adsorb P over a long timespans without requiring replenishment, due to its higher surface area, stability, and multiple P binding mechanisms.

Abstract:Application of iron (Fe) ‐rich amendments to soils has been proposed as a means of decreasing phosphorus (P) losses from soils. However, anoxic conditions following soil saturation are known to increase Fe and P solubility in soils, thus cancelling out the potential benefits. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of continuous oxic, continuous anoxic and alternating anoxic/oxic conditions on P exchangeability and Fe forms in soil amended with Ca(OH)2 and FeSO4. We incubated amended and unamended soils under these conditions for 8 weeks and measured Fe forms and P exchangeability. Under oxic conditions, addition of Ca(OH)2 and FeSO4 resulted in a strong decrease in P exchangeability and an increase in oxalate‐extractable Fe. Mössbauer analyses suggested that an unidentified Fe oxide (D1oxide) with a strong sorbing capacity for P was precipitated. Under continuously anoxic conditions, P exchangeability and oxalate‐extractable Fe increased with or without the amendments. Mössbauer analyses suggested that there was a partial dissolution of the D1oxide phase, precipitation of another unidentified Fe oxide (S3) and a reduction of structural Fe3+ in phyllosilicate, thereby increasing soil negative charge. These transformations resulted in a strong increase in rapidly exchangeable P. Alternating anoxic and oxic periods induced the dissolution and precipitation of iron oxides and the increase and decrease in P exchangeability. Implications of the results for limiting P losses from grassland soils are discussed.

Abstract:Anthropogenic enrichment of phosphorus (P) in water environment can cause eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and water quality deterioration. Adsorbents are often used for the removal and recovery of P from water, however, P is highly susceptible to re-release in anoxic benthic environments. As a response, this study prepared oxygen-carrying iron-rich biochar (O-Fe-BC) as an effective oxygen micro-nanobubble carrier ( Q = 8.7024 cm3/g STP at 1.5 MPa) and P adsorbent (q m = 16.7097 mg P/g, q 0.1 = 3.1974 mg P/g). Over the 90-day experimental period with O-Fe-BC, dissolved oxygen (DO) levels in the overlying water could maintain at ∼4 mg/L (peaking at ∼9.5 mg/L), and total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) levels decreased by over 96 %. The higher inorganic phosphorus content in the surface sediment-biochar mixture, along with the lower labile P and Fe concentration in the sediment pore water in the O-Fe-BC group compared to other groups, suggested the enhanced P immobilization. Further mechanism exploration revealed the combined roles of adsorption and microbial response, in which O-Fe-BC achieved efficient phosphate adsorption primarily through inner-sphere complexation via ligand exchange and keystone taxa (particularly Candidatus Electronema) played a crucial role in driving water chemistry divergence. Specially, these cable bacteria could provide large pools of Fe oxides in the surface sediment, binding with P to prevent its release, as supported by significant correlations between Ca. Electronema abundance and oxidation–reduction potential (ORP), TP, SRP, and sediment Fe-P variations. Additionally, a pot experiment with mung bean seedlings showed that the recovered O-Fe-BC significantly promoted the seed germination and growth, indicating its potential as a novel material for removing and recovering P from eutrophic waters. Taken together, our work provided a promising strategy for sustainable anoxia and P pollution mitigation, and also highlighted the indispensable roles of inner-sphere adsorption in P recovery and microbial keystone taxa in P cycling regulation.

Abstract:Iron (Fe) phases are tightly linked to the preservation rather than the loss of organic carbon (OC) in soil; however, during redox fluctuations, OC may be lost due to Fe phase-mediated abiotic processes. This study examined the role of Fe phases in driving hydroxyl radical (•OH) formation and OC transformation during redox cycles in paddy soils. Chemical probes, sequential extraction, and Mössbauer analyses showed that the active Fe species, such as exchangeable and surface-bound Fe and Fe in low-crystalline minerals (e.g., green rust-like Fe phases), predominantly regulated •OH formation during redox cycles. The •OH oxidation strongly induced the oxidative transformation of OC, which accounted for 15.1–30.8% of CO2 production during oxygenation. Microbial processes contributed 7.3–12.1% of CO2 production, as estimated by chemical quenching and γ-irradiation experiments. After five redox cycles, 30.1–71.9% of the OC associated with active Fe species was released, whereas 5.2–7.1% was stabilized by high-crystalline Fe phases due to the irreversible transformation of these active Fe species during redox cycles. Abstract:The interaction between organic phosphorus (OP) and iron oxide significantly influences the phosphorus cycle in the natural environment. In shallow lakes, intense oxidation-reduction fluctuations constantly alter the existing form of iron oxides, but little is known about their impact on the adsorption and fractionation of OP molecules. In this study, electrospray ionization coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FT-ICR MS) was used to investigate the fractionation of OP from alkali-extracted sediment induced by crystalline goethite and amorphous ferrihydrite adsorption at a molecular scale. The results showed that ferrihydrite and goethite both exhibited high OP adsorption, and the adsorption amount decreased as the pH increased. The adsorption kinetics matched the pseudo-second-order equation. The ESI-FT-ICR MS analysis showed that 91 P-containing formulas were detected in the alkaline-extracted sediment solution. Ferrihydrite and goethite adsorbed 51 and 24 P-containing formulas, respectively, with adsorption rates of 56.0 % and 26.4 %. Ferrihydrite could adsorb more OP compounds than goethite, but no obvious molecular species selectivity was observed during the adsorption. The P-containing compounds, including unsaturated hydrocarbons-, lignin/carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecule (CRAM)-, tannin-, and carbohydrate-like molecular compounds, were more suitable for iron oxide adsorption. The double bond equivalence (DBE) is a valuable parameter that indicates OP fractionation during adsorption, and P-containing compounds with lower DBE values such as lipid- and protein-like molecular were prone to remain in the solution after adsorption. These research results provide insights into the biogeochemical cycling process of P in the natural environment.
