Abstract:AbstractAntimony (Sb) mining often causes severe Sb pollution and associate arsenic (As) compound contamination. To further understand the interaction mechanism among soil microorganisms, heavy metal distribution, and geochemical factors, the effects of environmental factors on soil microbial communities under different levels of Sb-As co-contamination were studied in situ of Chashan antimony mine, Guangxi Province. The results showed that the range of Sb and As contents in soil were 1339.63–7762.28 mg/kg and 2170.3–10,371.36 mg/kg, respectively, and the residual fraction accounted for more than 98.0% with less than 2.0% of bioavailable fraction. Besides, the concentration of the two metals is both related to the distance to surface runoff. Different microbial communities in arable soils of each sample site were analyzed, which was significantly affected by soil environmental factors such as pH, ALN, AP, OM, Tot-Sb, Tot-As, Bio-As, and Bio-Sb. The phylum of Actinobacteria in sites 1, 4, and 5 was the most dominant and the phylum of Proteobacteria were the most dominant in sites 2 and 3. Moreover, the results of redundancy analysis (RDA), variation partition analysis (VPA), and Spearman correlation analyses demonstrated that microorganisms, heavy metal distribution, and geochemical factors interacted with each other and together shaped the microbial community. Our findings are beneficial for understanding the response of soil microorganisms to As-Sb distribution and geochemical factors in arable soils under Sb mining areas.

Abstract:Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are two hazardous metalloid elements, and the biogeochemical cycle of Sb and As can be better understood by studying plant rhizosphere microorganisms associated with Sb mine waste. In the current study, samples of three types of mine waste—Sb mine tailing, waste rocks, and smelting slag—and associated rhizosphere microorganisms of adapted plants were collected from Qinglong Sb mine, southwest China. 16S rRNA was sequenced and used to study the composition of the mine waste microbial community. The most abundant phylum in all samples was Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota. The community composition varied among different mine waste types. Gammaproteobacteria was the most abundant microorganism in tailings, Actinobacteria was mainly distributed in waste rock, and Saccharimonadia, Acidobacteriae, and Ktedonobacteria were mainly present in slag. At the family level, the vast majority of Hydrogenophilaceae were found in tailings, Ktedonobacteraceae, Chthoniobacteraceae, and Acidobacteriaceae (Subgroup 1) were mostly found in slag, and Pseudomonadaceae and Micrococcaceae were mainly found in waste rock. Actinobacteriota and Arthrobacter are important taxa for reducing heavy metal(loid) mobility, vegetation restoration, and self-sustaining ecosystem construction on antimony mine waste. The high concentrations of Sb and As reduce microbial diversity.

Abstract:A novel method to design metal oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) devices with high performance and high photostability for next-generation flat-panel displays is reported. Here, we developed bilayer metal oxide TFTs, where the front channel consists of indium-zinc-oxide (IZO) and the back channel material on top of it is hafnium-indium-zinc-oxide (HIZO). Density-of-states (DOS)-based modeling and device simulation were performed in order to determine the optimum thickness ratio within the IZO/HIZO stack that results in the best balance between device performance and stability. As a result, respective values of 5 and 40 nm for the IZO and HIZO layers were determined. The TFT devices that were fabricated accordingly exhibited mobility values up to 48 cm(2)/(V s), which is much elevated compared to pure HIZO TFTs (∼13 cm(2)/(V s)) but comparable to pure IZO TFTs (∼59 cm(2)/(V s)). Also, the stability of the bilayer device (-1.18 V) was significantly enhanced compared to the pure IZO device (-9.08 V). Our methodology based on the subgap DOS model and simulation provides an effective way to enhance the device stability while retaining a relatively high mobility, which makes the corresponding devices suitable for ultradefinition, large-area, and high-frame-rate display applications.

Abstract:In the current study, a typical Sb mine was selected to explore the microbial community composition and assembly driven by the cocontamination of As/Sb with geographic distance. Our results showed that environmental parameters, especially pH, TOC, nitrate, total and bioavailable As/Sb contents largely affected the microbial community diversity and composition. The total and bioavailable As/Sb levels were significantly positively correlated with the relative abundance of Zavarzinella , Thermosporothrix and Holophaga , while the pH presented a significant negative correlation with the three genera, potentially implying they are important taxonomic groups in acid-mining soils. The cooccurrence network analysis indicated the environmental stress dominated by pH and As/Sb co-contamination affected the microbial modularity and interaction. Meanwhile, Homogeneous selection (HoS, 26.4–49.3%), and drift and others (DR, 27.1∼40.2%) were the most important assembly processes for soil bacterial, and the importance of HoS decreased and the DR increased with geographic distance to the contamination source respectively. Soil pH, nutrient availability, total and bioavailable As/Sb contents significantly affected the HoS and DR processes. This study provides theoretical support for microbial remediation in metal(loid)-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Mining activities of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) typically result in severe environmental contamination. These contaminants accumulate in rice and thus threaten the health of local residents, who consume Sb- and As-enriched rice grains. Microorganisms play a critical role in the transformation and transportation of Sb and As in paddy soil. Thus, an understanding of the microbiology of contaminated sites would promote the production of safe agricultural products. In this study, six Sb- and As-contaminated rice fields near an active Sb-mining area were investigated. The Sb and As concentrations of all samples were elevated compared to the background level in China. Nitrate, total As, total Sb, and Fe(III) were the major determinants of the microbial community structure. Seven bacterial taxa (i.e. Bradyrhizobium, Bryobacter, Candidatus Solibacter, Geobacter, Gemmatimonas, Halingium, and Sphingomonas) were identified as the core microbiome. These taxa were strongly correlated with the As and Sb contaminant fractions and likely to metabolize As and Sb. Results imply that many soil microbes can survival in the Sb/As contaminated sites.

Abstract:China is the largest antimony resource globally. The mining and smelting of antimony will inevitably have a significant impact on the surrounding and downstream farmlands of the mining area, Therefore, it is necessary to understand the pollution characteristics of antimony and evaluate its potential environmental risks. In this paper, three typical antimony mining areas were used as research districts to analyze the contents of heavy metals in soils of the mining areas and watersheds. The single-factor pollution index method, Nemerow comprehensive pollution index method, geo-accumulation index method, and potential ecological risk index method were used to comprehensively evaluate the pollution status and ecological risk of heavy metals in soils around the mining areas. The soil around the Lengshuijiang tin mine was polluted by As, Cd, Zn, and Sb, it was a heavily polluted soil and at a high ecological risk level. The arable soil around the Nandan tea mountain antimony mine was polluted by As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn, and it was a heavily polluted soil with very high ecological risk level. The soil around the Xunyang antimony mine was mainly polluted by Sb and it was a moderately polluted soil with moderate ecological risk level. The results revealed that the overall soil heavy metal levels in the Lengshuijiang mining area and the Nandan mining area were in a high-risk state, most likely due to the mining and smelting of metal ores and the weathering of mineralised rocks. showing a high-potential ecological risk in these mining areas. We expect to provide a scientific basis for the safe utilization of farmland and pollution control around the antimony mining areas and watersheds in China.

Abstract:Mining and smelting activities are the major sources of antimony (Sb) contamination. The soil around Xikuangshan (XKS), one of the largest Sb mines in the world, has been contaminated with high concentrations of Sb and other associated metals, and has attracted extensive scholarly attention. Phytoremediation is considered a promising method for removing heavy metals, and the diversity and structure of rhizosphere microorganisms may change during the phytoremediation process. The rhizosphere microbiome is involved in soil energy transfer, nutrient cycling, and resistance and detoxification of metal elements. Thus, changes in this microbiome are worthy of investigation using high-throughput sequencing techniques. Our study in Changlongjie and Lianmeng around XKS revealed that microbial diversity indices in the rhizospheres of Broussonetia papyrifera and Ligustrum lucidum were significantly higher than in bulk soil, indicating that plants affect microbial communities. Additionally, most of the bacteria that were enriched in the rhizosphere belonged to the Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. In Changlongjie and Lianmeng, the diversity and abundance of the microbial community in the B. papyrifera rhizosphere were higher than in L. lucidum. In parallel, the soil pH of the B. papyrifera rhizosphere increased significantly in acidic soil and decreased significantly in near-neutral soil. Redundancy analyses indicated that pH was likely the main factor affecting the overall bacterial community compositions, followed by moisture content, Sb, arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr).

Abstract:Mining activities have introduced various heavy metals and metalloids to surrounding soil environments, causing adverse impacts to the ecological environment system. The extremely high concentration of various heavy metals and metalloids make the Xikuangshan (Hunan, China) an excellent model to assess their ecological risk. In this study, the soil samples from 26 locations of different land use methods in four areas (smelting area, road nearby ore, mining area, and ore tailing area) in Xikuangshan with different levels of various heavy metals and metalloids (Sb, As, Pb, and Cd) were analyzed; in addition, the index of geo-accumulation and the potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate ecological risk. The results showed that the average contents of Sb, As, Pb, and Cd in all soil samples were 4368.222 mg·kg−1, 40.722 mg·kg−1, 248.013 mg·kg−1, and 40.941 mg·kg−1, respectively, implying serious contamination of compound pollution of heavy metals in soil. The concentration of heavy metals in soil among smelting area, road nearby ore, mining area, and ore tailing area showed significant distribution characteristics of region because different mining activities such as smelting, mining, transportation, and stacking caused different pollution intensity. Moreover, the contents of Sb in soil samples decreased successively in residue field, wasteland, forestland, sediment, grassland, and vegetable field, and the contents of Sb in vegetable-field and ecological restoration grassland were relatively low, which indicate that the method of grassland ecological restoration is an effective method to control antimony pollution in soil. The results of ecological risk assessment showed that the antimony mining area was seriously polluted by Sb, As, Pb, and Cd, and had strong ecological risk, and Sb and Cd were the most important pollution factors, which indicated that the pollution of Sb and Cd should be a major concern of relevant departments of environment and health.

Abstract:Mining and smelting have been releasing huge amount of toxic substances into the environment. In the present study, agricultural soil and different agricultural products (potato, Chinese cabbage, garlic bolt, corn) were analyzed to examine the source, spatial distribution, and risk of 12 elements (As, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn) in agricultural soil near mine fields, smelting fields, and mountain field around Hezhang County, west of Guizhou Province, China. Multivariate statistical analysis indicated that in mining area, As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, and Zn were generated from anthropogenic sources; in smelting area, As, Be, Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn were derived from anthropogenic sources through zinc smelting ceased in 2004. The enrichment factors (EFs) and ecological risk index (RI) of soil in mining area are the most harmful, showing extremely high enrichment and very high ecological risk of As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, and Zn. Zinc is the most significant enriched in the smelting area; however, mountain area has a moderate enrichment and ecological risk and do not present any ecological risk. According to spatial distribution, the concentrations depend on the nearby mining and smelting activities. Transfer factors (TFs) in the smelting area and mountain are high, implying a threat for human consumption. Therefore, further studies should be carried out taking into account the harm of those heavy metals and potential negative health effects from the consumption of agricultural products in these circumstances.

Abstract:Microbes have great potential for arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) bioremediation in heavily contaminated soil because they have the ability to biotransform As and Sb to species that have less toxicity or are more easily removed. In this study, we integrated a metagenomic method with physicochemical characterization to elucidate the composition of microbial community and functional genes (related to As and Sb) in a high As (range from 34.11 to 821.23 mg kg-1) and Sb (range from 226.67 to 3923.07 mg kg-1) contaminated mine field. Metagenomic analysis revealed that microbes from 18 phyla were present in the 5 samples of soil contaminated with high As and Sb. Moreover, redundancy analysis (RDA) of the relationship between the 18 phyla and the concentration of As and Sb demonstrated that 5 phyla of microbes, i.e. Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Nitrospirae, Tenericutes and Gemmatimonadetes were positively correlated with As and Sb concentration. The distribution, diversity and abundance of functional genes (including arsC, arrA, aioA, arsB and ACR3) were much higher for the samples containing higher As and Sb concentrations. Based on correlation analysis, the results showed a positive relationship between arsC-like (R2 = 0.871) and aioA-like (R2 = 0.675) gene abundance and As concentration, and indicated that intracellular As(V) reduction and As(III) oxidation could be the dominant As detoxification mechanism enabling the microbes to survive in the environment. This study provides a direct and reliable reference on the diversity of microbial community and functional genes in an extremely high concentration As- and Sb-contaminated environment.
Characterization of physicochemical parameters and bioavailable heavy metals and their interactions with microbial community in arsenic-contaminated soils and sediments

Abstract:Mobility and toxicity of heavy metal contamination in the environment are highly dependent on its bioavailability. Most of previous studies focused on total heavy metal contents and their influence on microbial community in soils and sediments. Little were concerned about bioavailable fractions. In the current study, soil and sediment samples were collected near an abandoned realgar mine in Shimen County, China. Bioavailable heavy metals including Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, and Pb in the samples were extracted using three-step sequential extraction method. Interactions among physicochemical parameters, total and bioavailable heavy metals, and microbial community in the collected samples were investigated. The study area has been severely contaminated by As with a concentration up to 2158 mg·kg−1 detected. The result of principal component analysis showed that the abundance of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the soils were obviously different from those in the sediments. In the soil samples, pH made a dominant contribution on the OTU abundance of microbial community. Correlation analyses revealed that the alpha diversity indices and microbial taxon were most correlated with bioavailable fractions of heavy metals in all the samples. That means bioavailable heavy metals rather than total heavy metals or physicochemical parameters played a more important role on richness and diversity of microbial community. Little connections were observed between microbial community and As no matter total concentration or bioavailable fraction. However, bioavailable Fe and Mn were recognized as the major driving force shaping the taxonomic structure of microbial community due to their relatively high concentrations and high affinity to other heavy metal contamination in soils and sediments.

Abstract:Mining activity is a growing environmental concern as it contributes to heavy metals (HMs) pollution in agricultural soils. Microbial communities play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of HMs and have the potential to be used as bioindicators. Arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) are the most hazardous HMs and are mainly originated from mining activities. However, spatial variation in microbial community in response to As and Pb contamination in paddy soils remains overlooked. In this study, the biological and chemical properties of sixteen soil samples from four sites (N01, N02, N03, and N04) near a Pb-Zn mining site at different As and Pb levels were examined. The results showed that soil pH, total As and Pb, bioavailable As and Pb, nitrate-nitrogen (NO3 −-N) and ammonia-nitrogen (NH4 +-N) were the most important factors in shaping the bacterial community structure. In addition, significant correlations between various bacterial genera and As and Pb concentrations were observed, indicating their potential roles in As and Pb biogeochemical cycling. These findings provide insights into the variation of paddy soil bacterial community in soils co-contaminated with different levels of As and Pb.

Abstract:A field survey and analysis of soils were conducted to investigate the pollution of antimony,arsenic and mercury in agricultural soils of antimony mine area in Xikuangshan,Hunan Province.It was found that the three heavy metals were significantly elevated in soil samples(141.92-8733.26 mg kg-1Sb、14.95-363.19 mg kg-1 As and 0.16-5.68 mg kg-1Hg),which all exceeded their background concentrations in soils of Hunan.The average concentrations of Sb and As were 695 times and 2.3 times higher than the maximum permissible ones in the standard soil samples of Holland respectively,while the content of Hg was close to the maximum permissible one(2.2 mg kg-1) in the latter.The concentrations of the three elements in soil samples of smelting area were the highest in the mining area、smelting area and ore tailing area.Based on the assessment of the three heavy metals contaminated soil samples by the using of Index of geoaccumulation,it was indicated that smelters and mining activities were the main sources of heavy metals pollution of agricultural soils in antimony mine area and antimony pollution played the most important role in heavy metal pollution of soils.
Variations of Soil Chemical Properties and Microbial Community around the Acid Reservoir in the Mining Area

Abstract:Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is unique acidic wastewater produced in the process of iron mining and utilization. The soil and wetland contaminated by AMD in a mining area in Ma'anshan were studied in this paper. The physical and chemical characteristics and microbial community structure of the samples were analyzed to evaluate the resident soil pollution. The results showed that the soil around the acid reservoir was seriously polluted by metals such as Fe, Mn, Cd, and sulfate, and the loss of organic matter and total nitrogen was serious. With the increased distance between soil samples and the acid reservoir, the pollution degree of AMD decreased, the soil pH, organic matter and total nitrogen contents increased gradually, the soil microbial species increased slightly, and the diversity index increased. Bacillus, Lactococcus, and other bacteria with hydrolytic acid-producing functions accounted for more than 55.0% of the total bacterial community. Desulfuromonas, Desulfobulbus, and other genes involved in sulfur metabolism accounted for more than 24.0% of the total microbial community. In addition, Nitrosophaera, Nitrosopumilus, Methanoregula, and Methanosphaerula, which were involved in nitrogen cycling, were the dominant bacteria in the sampled soil. Our findings provide the basic data to support the mineral industry in China as well as for ecological functional evaluation based on species differences.

Abstract:The mining of deposits containing metals like antimony (Sb) causes serious environmental issues that threaten human health and ecological systems. However, information on the effect of Sb on freshwater sediment microorganisms and the mechanism of microbial Sb resistance is still very limited. This was the first attempt to explore microbial communities in river sediments impacted by accidental Sb spill. Metagenomic analysis revealed the high relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria in all the studied river sediments, showing their advantage in resistance to Sb pollution. Under Sb stress, microbial functions related to DNA repair and ion transport were enhanced. Increase in heavy metal resistance genes (HMRGs), particularly Sb transport-related arsB gene, was observed at Sb spill-impacted sites. HMRGs were significantly correlated with ARGs and MGEs, and the abundant MGEs at Sb spill-impacted sites might contribute to the increase in HMRGs and ARGs via horizontal gene transfer. Deinococcus, Sphingopyxis and Paracoccus were identified as potential tolerant genera under Sb pressure and might be related to the transmission of HMRGs and ARGs. Abstract:Arsenic (As) is one of the most toxic metalloids that possess many forms. As is constantly migrating from abandoned mining area to the surrounding environment in both oxidation and reducing conditions, threatening human health and ecological safety. The biogeochemical reaction of As included oxidation, reduction, methylation, and demethylation, which is closely associated with microbial metabolisms. The study of the geochemical behavior of arsenic in mining areas and the microbial remediation of arsenic pollution have great potential and are hot spots for the prevention and remediation of arsenic pollution. In this study, we review the distribution and migration of arsenic in the mining area, focus on the geochemical cycle of arsenic under the action of microorganisms, and summarize the factors influencing the biogeochemical cycle of arsenic, and strategies for arsenic pollution in mining areas are also discussed. Finally, the problems of the risk control strategies and the future development direction are prospected.

Standardized framework for assessing soil quality at antimony smelting site by considering microbial-induced resilience and heavy metal contamination

Abstract:Antimony smelting activities damage the soil and vegetation surroundings while generating economic value. However, no standardized methods are available to diagnose the extent of soil degradation at antimony smelting sites. This study developed a standardized framework for assessing soil quality by considering microbial-induced resilience and heavy metal contamination at Xikuangshan antimony smelting site. The soil resilience index (SRI) and soil contamination index (SCI) were calculated by Minimum Data Set and geo-accumulation model, respectively. After standardized by a multi-criteria quantitative procedure of modified Nemerow's pollution index (NPI), the integrated assessment of soil quality index (SQI), which is the minimum of SRINPI and SCINPI, was achieved. The results showed that Sb and As were the prominent metal(loid) pollutants, and significant correlations between SQI and SRI indicated that the poor soil quality was mainly caused by the low level of soil resilience. The primary limiting factors of SRI were Fungi in high and middle contaminated areas, and Skermanella in low contaminated area, suggesting that the weak soil resilience was caused by low specific microbial abundances. Microbial regulation and phytoremediation are greatly required to improve the soil quality at antimony smelting sites from the perspectives of pollution control and resilience improvement. This study improves our understanding of ecological effects of antimony smelting sites and provides a theoretical basis for ecological restoration and sustainable development of mining areas.
Diversity and composition of soil bacteria between abandoned and selective-farming farmlands in an antimony mining area

Abstract:Background and aims Land abandonment and selective farming are two common management methods to restore the soil conditions of low-pollution farmland in mining areas. The soil bacterial community plays an important role in farmland soil restoration; however, few studies have compared the composition and diversity of soil bacteria between the abandoned farmlands (AFS) and selective-farming farmlands (FFS). Here, the effects of AFS and FFS on soil properties and bacterial diversity were evaluated in an antimony (Sb) mining area in southern China. This study aimed to identify effective land management methods in terms of positive or negative changes in soil environment and bacterial diversity. Methods 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing was used to compare the diversity and composition of soil bacteria between AFS and FFS in the Xikuangshan (the largest Sb mine in the world). Results Compared to AFS, FFS had higher Sb concentration and nutritional properties (e.g., available N, P, and K) and lower Zn concentration ( p < 0.05). The bacterial alpha diversity including Chao1 index, Simpson index, Shannon index and Pielou − e index in FFS was higher than AFS ( p < 0.05). At the phylum level, FFS had higher relative abundances of Chloroflexi , Acidobacteria , Gemmatimonadetes , and Rokubacteria , and lower relative abundances of Firmicutes , Actinobacteria , and Bacteroidetes . At the genus level, FFS had higher relative abundances of Acidothermus , Haliangium , and Rokubacteriales , and lower relative abundances of Bacillus , Rhodococcus , Sphingomonas , and 67-14 . Redundancy analysis indicated that soil heavy metal content and soil fertility were closely correlated with the soil bacterial community. Altogether, selective farming of low-pollution farmland in the mining area can improve soil properties and soil bacterial diversity.

Abstract:The disordered mining of Dabaoshan lead-zinc mineral resources in Shaoguan has brought serious harm to the regional ecological environment. In order to investigate the heavy metal pollution status and microbial characteristics of soil plant system in mining area, The distribution of heavy metals in the soil, the activity of soil microorganisms and the accumulation characteristics of heavy metals in the dominant plant Miscanthus floridulus were studied. The results indicated that metal element contents of Miscanthus floridulus in sequence were: Zn>Pb>Cu> Cd. This study demonstrated that the elemental content of the Miscanthus floridulus plant showed Zn>Pb>Cu>Cd, with Zn being the most significantly correlated with soil elements, followed by Pb. Compared with the control group, the Miscanthus floridulus -soil system possessed obviously different soil microbial features: intensiver in microbial basal respiration strength, and higher microbial eco-physiological parameters Cmic/Corg and qCO 2 , but lower in soil microbial biomass. The results showed the soil enzymatic activities decreased significantly with increase of contamination of heavy metals, especially dehydrogenase and urease activities. With the increase of the content of heavy metals in the mining area soil, the intensity of soil biochemical action in the mining area (Q1, Q2) soil decreased significantly, and the biochemical action showed a significant negative correlation with the content of heavy metals in the soil. Compared with the non mining area (Q8) soil, the intensity of soil ammonification, nitrification, N fixation and cellulose decomposition decreased by 43.2%~71.1%, 70.1%~92.1%, 58.7%~87.8% and 55.3%~79.8% respectively. The decrease of soil microbial activity weakened the circulation rate and energy flow of C and N nutrients in the soil of the mining area.
