Abstract:Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are two hazardous metalloid elements, and the biogeochemical cycle of Sb and As can be better understood by studying plant rhizosphere microorganisms associated with Sb mine waste. In the current study, samples of three types of mine waste—Sb mine tailing, waste rocks, and smelting slag—and associated rhizosphere microorganisms of adapted plants were collected from Qinglong Sb mine, southwest China. 16S rRNA was sequenced and used to study the composition of the mine waste microbial community. The most abundant phylum in all samples was Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota. The community composition varied among different mine waste types. Gammaproteobacteria was the most abundant microorganism in tailings, Actinobacteria was mainly distributed in waste rock, and Saccharimonadia, Acidobacteriae, and Ktedonobacteria were mainly present in slag. At the family level, the vast majority of Hydrogenophilaceae were found in tailings, Ktedonobacteraceae, Chthoniobacteraceae, and Acidobacteriaceae (Subgroup 1) were mostly found in slag, and Pseudomonadaceae and Micrococcaceae were mainly found in waste rock. Actinobacteriota and Arthrobacter are important taxa for reducing heavy metal(loid) mobility, vegetation restoration, and self-sustaining ecosystem construction on antimony mine waste. The high concentrations of Sb and As reduce microbial diversity.

Abstract:AbstractAntimony (Sb) mining often causes severe Sb pollution and associate arsenic (As) compound contamination. To further understand the interaction mechanism among soil microorganisms, heavy metal distribution, and geochemical factors, the effects of environmental factors on soil microbial communities under different levels of Sb-As co-contamination were studied in situ of Chashan antimony mine, Guangxi Province. The results showed that the range of Sb and As contents in soil were 1339.63–7762.28 mg/kg and 2170.3–10,371.36 mg/kg, respectively, and the residual fraction accounted for more than 98.0% with less than 2.0% of bioavailable fraction. Besides, the concentration of the two metals is both related to the distance to surface runoff. Different microbial communities in arable soils of each sample site were analyzed, which was significantly affected by soil environmental factors such as pH, ALN, AP, OM, Tot-Sb, Tot-As, Bio-As, and Bio-Sb. The phylum of Actinobacteria in sites 1, 4, and 5 was the most dominant and the phylum of Proteobacteria were the most dominant in sites 2 and 3. Moreover, the results of redundancy analysis (RDA), variation partition analysis (VPA), and Spearman correlation analyses demonstrated that microorganisms, heavy metal distribution, and geochemical factors interacted with each other and together shaped the microbial community. Our findings are beneficial for understanding the response of soil microorganisms to As-Sb distribution and geochemical factors in arable soils under Sb mining areas.

Abstract:A novel method to design metal oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) devices with high performance and high photostability for next-generation flat-panel displays is reported. Here, we developed bilayer metal oxide TFTs, where the front channel consists of indium-zinc-oxide (IZO) and the back channel material on top of it is hafnium-indium-zinc-oxide (HIZO). Density-of-states (DOS)-based modeling and device simulation were performed in order to determine the optimum thickness ratio within the IZO/HIZO stack that results in the best balance between device performance and stability. As a result, respective values of 5 and 40 nm for the IZO and HIZO layers were determined. The TFT devices that were fabricated accordingly exhibited mobility values up to 48 cm(2)/(V s), which is much elevated compared to pure HIZO TFTs (∼13 cm(2)/(V s)) but comparable to pure IZO TFTs (∼59 cm(2)/(V s)). Also, the stability of the bilayer device (-1.18 V) was significantly enhanced compared to the pure IZO device (-9.08 V). Our methodology based on the subgap DOS model and simulation provides an effective way to enhance the device stability while retaining a relatively high mobility, which makes the corresponding devices suitable for ultradefinition, large-area, and high-frame-rate display applications.

Abstract:In the current study, a typical Sb mine was selected to explore the microbial community composition and assembly driven by the cocontamination of As/Sb with geographic distance. Our results showed that environmental parameters, especially pH, TOC, nitrate, total and bioavailable As/Sb contents largely affected the microbial community diversity and composition. The total and bioavailable As/Sb levels were significantly positively correlated with the relative abundance of Zavarzinella , Thermosporothrix and Holophaga , while the pH presented a significant negative correlation with the three genera, potentially implying they are important taxonomic groups in acid-mining soils. The cooccurrence network analysis indicated the environmental stress dominated by pH and As/Sb co-contamination affected the microbial modularity and interaction. Meanwhile, Homogeneous selection (HoS, 26.4–49.3%), and drift and others (DR, 27.1∼40.2%) were the most important assembly processes for soil bacterial, and the importance of HoS decreased and the DR increased with geographic distance to the contamination source respectively. Soil pH, nutrient availability, total and bioavailable As/Sb contents significantly affected the HoS and DR processes. This study provides theoretical support for microbial remediation in metal(loid)-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Mining activities of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) typically result in severe environmental contamination. These contaminants accumulate in rice and thus threaten the health of local residents, who consume Sb- and As-enriched rice grains. Microorganisms play a critical role in the transformation and transportation of Sb and As in paddy soil. Thus, an understanding of the microbiology of contaminated sites would promote the production of safe agricultural products. In this study, six Sb- and As-contaminated rice fields near an active Sb-mining area were investigated. The Sb and As concentrations of all samples were elevated compared to the background level in China. Nitrate, total As, total Sb, and Fe(III) were the major determinants of the microbial community structure. Seven bacterial taxa (i.e. Bradyrhizobium, Bryobacter, Candidatus Solibacter, Geobacter, Gemmatimonas, Halingium, and Sphingomonas) were identified as the core microbiome. These taxa were strongly correlated with the As and Sb contaminant fractions and likely to metabolize As and Sb. Results imply that many soil microbes can survival in the Sb/As contaminated sites.

Abstract:The microbial community structures, sulfur speciation, and their correlations in soil samples in and around Xiangtan Liejiaqiao Coal Gangue Dump in Hunan province south of China were analyzed with gene sequencing, sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), and principal components analysis (PCA). The gene sequencing results showed that the microbes in soil samples fell into six phyla, i.e., Nitrospira, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Deferribacteres, and Ktedonobacteria. The dominant bacteria species in the four samples were Moorella glycerini, Escherichia coli, Leptospirillum ferriphilum, Ferrimicrobium acidiphilum, Sulfobacillus benefaciens, and Desulfomonile tiedjei. According to the XANES results, sulfur speciation in soil samples was composed of sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate, and organic sulfur. The PCA analysis among physicochemical characteristics, sulfur speciation, and distributions of microbes showed that oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) was correlated to the bacterial population of Proteobacteria, while pH was correlated to Ktedonobacteria. Furthermore, the correlation between sulfur speciation (sulfate and thiosulfate) and microbes (Deferribacteres, Nitrospira, and Actinobacteria) was particularly significant. Sulfite and glutathione also presented a strong correlation with Ktedonobacteria and Proteobacteria.

Abstract:Microbes have great potential for arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) bioremediation in heavily contaminated soil because they have the ability to biotransform As and Sb to species that have less toxicity or are more easily removed. In this study, we integrated a metagenomic method with physicochemical characterization to elucidate the composition of microbial community and functional genes (related to As and Sb) in a high As (range from 34.11 to 821.23 mg kg-1) and Sb (range from 226.67 to 3923.07 mg kg-1) contaminated mine field. Metagenomic analysis revealed that microbes from 18 phyla were present in the 5 samples of soil contaminated with high As and Sb. Moreover, redundancy analysis (RDA) of the relationship between the 18 phyla and the concentration of As and Sb demonstrated that 5 phyla of microbes, i.e. Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Nitrospirae, Tenericutes and Gemmatimonadetes were positively correlated with As and Sb concentration. The distribution, diversity and abundance of functional genes (including arsC, arrA, aioA, arsB and ACR3) were much higher for the samples containing higher As and Sb concentrations. Based on correlation analysis, the results showed a positive relationship between arsC-like (R2 = 0.871) and aioA-like (R2 = 0.675) gene abundance and As concentration, and indicated that intracellular As(V) reduction and As(III) oxidation could be the dominant As detoxification mechanism enabling the microbes to survive in the environment. This study provides a direct and reliable reference on the diversity of microbial community and functional genes in an extremely high concentration As- and Sb-contaminated environment.

Abstract:Mining and smelting activities are the major sources of antimony (Sb) contamination. The soil around Xikuangshan (XKS), one of the largest Sb mines in the world, has been contaminated with high concentrations of Sb and other associated metals, and has attracted extensive scholarly attention. Phytoremediation is considered a promising method for removing heavy metals, and the diversity and structure of rhizosphere microorganisms may change during the phytoremediation process. The rhizosphere microbiome is involved in soil energy transfer, nutrient cycling, and resistance and detoxification of metal elements. Thus, changes in this microbiome are worthy of investigation using high-throughput sequencing techniques. Our study in Changlongjie and Lianmeng around XKS revealed that microbial diversity indices in the rhizospheres of Broussonetia papyrifera and Ligustrum lucidum were significantly higher than in bulk soil, indicating that plants affect microbial communities. Additionally, most of the bacteria that were enriched in the rhizosphere belonged to the Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. In Changlongjie and Lianmeng, the diversity and abundance of the microbial community in the B. papyrifera rhizosphere were higher than in L. lucidum. In parallel, the soil pH of the B. papyrifera rhizosphere increased significantly in acidic soil and decreased significantly in near-neutral soil. Redundancy analyses indicated that pH was likely the main factor affecting the overall bacterial community compositions, followed by moisture content, Sb, arsenic (As), and chromium (Cr).

Abstract:In an attempt to link the microbial community composition and function in mine tailings to the generation of acid mine drainage, we simultaneously explored the geochemistry and microbiology of six tailings collected from a lead/zinc mine, i.e. primary tailings (T1), slightly acidic tailings (T2), extremely acidic tailings (T3, T4 and T5) and orange-coloured oxidized tailings (T6). Geochemical results showed that the six tailings (from T1 to T6) likely represented sequential stages of the acidification process of the mine tailings. 16S rRNA pyrosequencing revealed a contrasting microbial composition between the six tailings: Proteobacteria-related sequences dominated T1-T3 with relative abundance ranging from 56 to 93%, whereas Ferroplasma-related sequences dominated T4-T6 with relative abundance ranging from 28 to 58%. Furthermore, metagenomic analysis of the microbial communities of T2 and T6 indicated that the genes encoding key enzymes for microbial carbon fixation, nitrogen fixation and sulfur oxidation in T2 were largely from Thiobacillus and Acidithiobacillus, Methylococcus capsulatus, and Thiobacillus denitrificans respectively; while those in T6 were mostly identified in Acidithiobacillus and Leptospirillum, Acidithiobacillus and Leptospirillum, and Acidithiobacillus respectively. The microbial communities in T2 and T6 harboured more genes suggesting diverse metabolic capacities for sulfur oxidation/heavy metal detoxification and tolerating low pH respectively.
Antimony efflux underpins phosphorus cycling and resistance of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in mining soils

Abstract:Microorganisms play crucial roles in phosphorus (P) turnover and P bioavailability increases in heavy metal-contaminated soils. However, microbially driven P-cycling processes and mechanisms of their resistance to heavy metal contaminants remain poorly understood. Here, we examined the possible survival strategies of P-cycling microorganisms in horizontal and vertical soil samples from the world's largest antimony (Sb) mining site, which is located in Xikuangshan, China. We found that total soil Sb and pH were the primary factors affecting bacterial community diversity, structure and P-cycling traits. Bacteria with the gcd gene, encoding an enzyme responsible for gluconic acid production, largely correlated with inorganic phosphate (Pi) solubilization and significantly enhanced soil P bioavailability. Among the 106 nearly complete bacterial metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) recovered, 60.4% carried the gcd gene. Pi transportation systems encoded by pit or pstSCAB were widely present in gcd -harboring bacteria, and 43.8% of the gcd -harboring bacteria also carried the acr3 gene encoding an Sb efflux pump. Phylogenetic and potential horizontal gene transfer (HGT) analyses of acr3 indicated that Sb efflux could be a dominant resistance mechanism, and two gcd -harboring MAGs appeared to acquire acr3 through HGT. The results indicated that Sb efflux could enhance P cycling and heavy metal resistance in Pi-solubilizing bacteria in mining soils. This study provides novel strategies for managing and remediating heavy metal-contaminated ecosystems.

Abstract:Background and aims Land abandonment and selective farming are two common management methods to restore the soil conditions of low-pollution farmland in mining areas. The soil bacterial community plays an important role in farmland soil restoration; however, few studies have compared the composition and diversity of soil bacteria between the abandoned farmlands (AFS) and selective-farming farmlands (FFS). Here, the effects of AFS and FFS on soil properties and bacterial diversity were evaluated in an antimony (Sb) mining area in southern China. This study aimed to identify effective land management methods in terms of positive or negative changes in soil environment and bacterial diversity. Methods 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing was used to compare the diversity and composition of soil bacteria between AFS and FFS in the Xikuangshan (the largest Sb mine in the world). Results Compared to AFS, FFS had higher Sb concentration and nutritional properties (e.g., available N, P, and K) and lower Zn concentration ( p < 0.05). The bacterial alpha diversity including Chao1 index, Simpson index, Shannon index and Pielou − e index in FFS was higher than AFS ( p < 0.05). At the phylum level, FFS had higher relative abundances of Chloroflexi , Acidobacteria , Gemmatimonadetes , and Rokubacteria , and lower relative abundances of Firmicutes , Actinobacteria , and Bacteroidetes . At the genus level, FFS had higher relative abundances of Acidothermus , Haliangium , and Rokubacteriales , and lower relative abundances of Bacillus , Rhodococcus , Sphingomonas , and 67-14 . Redundancy analysis indicated that soil heavy metal content and soil fertility were closely correlated with the soil bacterial community. Altogether, selective farming of low-pollution farmland in the mining area can improve soil properties and soil bacterial diversity.

Abstract:Objective: The arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) contents in the infant formula influence on the growth and development of low-birth-weight infants (LBWI). In Japan, many infant formulas are fortified only with DHA. We investigated the safety and efficacy of an infant formula (H2025A) fortified with DHA and ARA (DHA/ARA ratio of 2:1, the same as that in Japanese breast milk). Methods: In this randomized double-blind trial, 35 LBWI were randomly allocated to 2 groups fed with H2025A or an infant formula fortified only with DHA (control formula) after discharge from the NICU. The duration of this study was one month, and the growth and fatty acid composition of the erythrocyte membrane were compared between the 2 groups. Results: No difference was found in the body weight gain, height gain and head circumstance gain development between the 2 groups, and no adverse event occurred in both groups. The ARA content of the erythrocyte membrane after feeding for 1 month was significantly higher in the H2025A group than in the control group. On analysis adjusted with the breast-fed ratio, the ARA and DHA contents were significantly higher in the H2025A group. Conclusion: It was suggested that H2025A significantly increased the ARA and DHA contents of the erythrocyte membrane of LBWI compared to the contents of the control formula.
Responses of biomarkers, joint effect and drilosphere bacterial communities to antimony (III and/or V) contamination

Abstract:Contamination of soils with antimony (Sb) is becoming increasingly severe and widespread, and the associated ecological risks cannot be ignored. To evaluate how different Sb forms affected the earthworm Eisenia fetida in soil, the biomarker response index (BRI), effect addition index (EAI), and microbial diversity were characterized after single and joint application of Sb(III) and Sb(V). The results showed that Sb(III) was better enriched by earthworms than Sb(V). The metallothionein (MT) content in earthworms increased under Sb stress, and the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities also showed an increasing trend, suggesting waken-up antioxidant capacity. Severe alterations for health status were observed under combined treatment. Additionally, the EAI indicated that Sb(III) and Sb(V) had synergistic and antagonistic effects at low and high concentrations, respectively. The bacterial populations in the drilosphere (gut and burrow lining) appeared to be more susceptible to Sb contamination than in the non-drilosphere, their specific microecology may be an important factor in soil Sb migration and transformation. The abundance of Actinobacteria exhibited a significant decrease with increasing concentrations of single Sb(III) and Sb(V), while the abundance of Bacteroidia increased. The correlation heatmap showed that Sphingobacterium faecium was highly tolerant to Sb. These results provide not only an important basis for the ecological risk assessment of Sb in the soil environment but also new insights into the altered drilosphere bacterial communities under Sb stress.
Influence of Altered Microbes on Soil Organic Carbon Availability in Karst Agricultural Soils Contaminated by Pb-Zn Tailings.

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) availability is determined via a complex bio-mediated process, and Pb-Zn tailings are toxic to the soil microbes that are involved in this process. Here, Pb-Zn-tailings-contaminated karst soils with different levels (paddy field > corn field > citrus field > control group) were collected to explore the intrinsic relationship between Pb-Zn tailings and microbes due to the limited microbial abundance in these soils. The SOC concentration in the paddy fields is the highest. However, based on the soil microbial diversity and sole-carbon-source utilization profiles, the rate of SOC availability, McIntosh index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson's diversity index and species richness are the lowest in the rice paddy soils. According to the results of Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, Acidobacteria and Proteobacteria are the dominant phyla in all samples, accounting for more than 70% of the reads, while the majority of the remaining reads belong to the phyla Verrucomicrobia, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Nitrospirae. We also observed that their class, order, family, genus and operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were dependent on SOC availability. Pearson correlation analysis reveals that L-asparagine utilization profiles show significant positive correlation with OTUs 24, 75, and 109 (r = 0.383, 0.350, and 0.292, respectively), and malic acid utilization profiles show significant positive correlation with OTUs 4, 5, 19, 27 (Bradyrhizobium), 32 (Burkholderia), 75 and 109 (r = 0.286, 0.361, 0.387, 0.384, 0.363, 0.285, and 0.301, respectively), as also evidenced by the redundancy analysis (RDA) biplot and heat map. These results indicate that the most abundant groups of bacteria, especially the uncultured facultative Deltaproteobacteria GR-WP33-30 (OTU 24), after long-term acclimation in heavy metal-contaminated soil, are associated with the variance of labile carbon source such as L-asparagine and may have considerable control over the stability of the vast SOC pool in karst surface soils with different agricultural land-use practices. These findings can expand our understanding of global soil-carbon sequestration and storage via changes in microbial community structure of the most abundant species.
Release characteristics and stabilization of heavy metals in antimony tailings in Yunnan Province, China

Abstract:The pollution caused by the mining and smelting of heavy metals is becoming an increasingly severe environmental problem. In this study, the environmental risks of mine tailings were explored using typical antimony tailings (the depth of the sample taken from the ground to the deepest position of 120 cm) from the Zuoxiguo mine in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The tailings were examined to explore the geological background, distribution characteristics, and release characteristics of heavy metals. Additionally, stabilizer treatments for heavy metals were investigated in consideration of waste treatment. The results showed that the contents of Sb and As (8.93×10 3 and 425 mg/kg, respectively) in the tailings were considerably higher than the local soil background values, suggesting that these metals pose a considerable threat to the surrounding environment. The geological background values of Cr, Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn were relatively low. The results of static release showed that Sb, As, Cd, and Cr leached from the tailings more easily than Cu, Zn, and Pb under acidic conditions (pH=2.98). Geo-accumulation indices and potential ecological risk indices showed that Sb, As, Cd, and Pb were highly enriched in the tailings, whereas Cu, Cr, and Zn contents were relatively low. The single factor ecological risk index of the mining area showed that Sb and As are high ecological risk factors, whereas Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb are not. The results of the orthogonal test results showed that by adding 15.0% (m/m) fly ash and 15.0% (m/m) zeolite powder to the quicklime and curing for 28 d, a significant stabilization effect was observed for Sb, As, and Pb. This study helps determine the priority control components for characteristic heavy metals in antimony tailings, and provides valuable insights regarding the formulation of appropriate mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Soil near waste rock often contains high concentrations of antimony (Sb), but the mechanisms that mobilize Sb in a soil closely impacted by the waste rock piles are not well understood. We investigated these mobility mechanisms in soils near historical waste rock at the world's largest Sb mine. The sequential extraction (BCR) of soil reveal that over 95 % Sb is present in the residual fraction. The leached Sb concentration is related to the surface protonation and deprotonation of soil minerals. SEM-EDS shows Sb in the soil is associated with Fe and Ca. Moreover, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results show Sb is predominantly present as Sb(V) and is associated with Fe in the form of tripuhyite (FeSbO 4 ) as well as edge- and corner-sharing complexes on ferrihydrite and goethite. Thus, Fe in soils is important in controlling the mobility of Sb via surface complexation and co-precipitation of Sb by Fe oxides. The initially surface-adsorbed Sb(V) or co-precipitation is likely to undergo a phase transformation as the Fe oxides age. In addition, Sb mobility may be controlled by small amounts of calcium antimonate. These results further the understanding of the effect of secondary minerals in soils on the fate of Sb from waste rock weathering and inform source treatment for Sb-contaminated soils.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities, such as mining, influence soil bacterial community composition and microbial distributions. In the current study, the patterns in microbial distribution and the environmental drivers shaping the soil bacterial community composition in the alpine mining area of the Tianshan Mountain region, China, were investigated, and the bacterial communities were analyzed using 16S rDNA pyrosequencing. The environmental factors and their relationships with the microbial community composition, structure, and diversity were also assessed. The soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration increased along the elevation gradient, with the highest concentration in the mining area, which increased microbial abundance and species richness. Some metals, like Ca, Cu, Pb, and Zn, accumulated significantly in the tailing area and were negatively correlated with the microbial community structure. Proteobacteria , Acidobacteria , Actinobacteria , and Verrucomicrobia were the dominant phyla; these dominant phyla were more abundant in the areas without mining than in the areas with mining at the same altitude. The relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Verrucomicrobia significantly increased along the elevation gradient, while that of Actinobacteria in the mining camp area was more than twice those in the other areas due to higher soil pH. Soil biomass was the highest in the valley. Collectively, these results elucidate the influence of anthropogenic mining activities on soil microbial communities in alpine mining soils and provide a basis for the future management of heavy metal-contaminated areas using the indigenous dominant bacterial phyla.

Abstract:Introduction: The lack of systematic investigations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community composition is an obstacle to AMF biotechnological applications in antimony (Sb)- and arsenic (As)-polluted soil. Methods: Morphological and molecular identification were applied to study the AMF community composition in Sb- and As-contaminated areas, and the main influencing factors of AMF community composition in Sb- and As-contaminated areas were explored. Results: (1) A total of 513,546 sequences were obtained, and the majority belonged to Glomeraceae [88.27%, 193 operational taxonomic units (OTUs)], followed by Diversisporaceae, Paraglomeraceae, Acaulosporaceae, Gigasporaceae, and Archaeosporaceae; (2) the affinity between AMF and plants was mainly related to plant species ( F = 3.488, p = 0.022 < 0.050), which was not significantly correlated with the total Sb (TSb) and total As (TAs) in soil; (3) the AMF spore density was mainly related to the available nitrogen, available potassium, and total organic carbon; (4) The effect of soil nutrients on AMF community composition (total explanation: 15.36%) was greater than that of soil Sb and As content (total explanation: 5.80%); (5) the effect of TAs on AMF community composition (λ = −0.96) was more drastic than that of TSb (λ = −0.21), and the effect of As on AMF community composition was exacerbated by the interaction between As and phosphorus in the soil; and (6) Diversisporaceae was positively correlated with the TSb and TAs. Discussion: The potential impact of As on the effective application of mycorrhizal technology should be further considered when applied to the ecological restoration of Sb- and As-contaminated areas.
