Abstract:Groundwater is in direct contact with the soil and rocks that dissolve many compounds and minerals including uranium and its daughter products. 210Po is one of the decay products of 238U series that cause internal radiation dose in humans when consumed in the form of water and food, including sea food. Therefore, activities of 210Po have been studied in ground and surface water, and in food samples that are commonly used in Chamarajanagar region of Karnataka, India. The average 210Po concentration in bore well water samples and surface water samples are 3.21 and 1.85 mBq L-1, respectively. In raw rice and wheat, the average values of 210Po are 96 and 41 mBq kg-1, respectively. In millets and pulses, the average activity of 210Po is 157 and 79 mBq kg-1, respectively. Among food items, the highest activity of 1.3 kBq kg-1 is observed in marine crabs and the lowest activity of 2.6 mBq kg-1 is found in milk samples. The average ingestion dose due to 210Po in ground and surface water are 2.8 and 1.62 μSv y-1, respectively. The ingestion dose due to various food samples to the population is also calculated. Total ingestion dose due to 210Po to pure vegetarian population and general population are 38.09 and 590.80 μSv y-1, respectively. The concentration of 210Po in water samples and food samples of this region are in a comparable range with the world and Indian average values and lies well below the recommended guideline level.

Abstract:Radionuclide activity of the selected radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K was measured in surface soil samples collected from 40 villages of the western part of Yadgir district of Karnataka. A 4″ × 4″ NaI (Tl) detector based on a gamma spectrometer is used for the estimation of radionuclides. The major type of soil in this region is sandy and red. The 222Rn activity concentrations in drinking water were determined by the Emanometry method. The 222Rn activity in ground water is found to vary from 1.73 to 155.6 Bql-1. The total annual effective doses because of 222Rn inhalation and ingestion range from 4.72 to 424.84 μSv y-1 with an average value of 108.8 μSv y-1, respectively. Among the sampling stations, Shahapur and Shorapur soil samples show higher activity values than the Kembhavi and Hunasagi sampling stations soil samples.

Abstract:Natural elements like uranium and its by-products can cause health problems if they are present in groundwater at excessive concentrations. Some industrial activities are known to elevate uranium concentrations, such as uranium mining, phosphate fertilizer production, nuclear power plants, metal processing, and coal combustion. This study gives information about the uranium concentration in groundwater samples collected from distinct water sources like hand pumps and tube wells from a variety of depths and numerous locations in Yamuna Nagar, Near Shivalik Hills, and the Origin of Saraswati River, India. Uranium concentration was measured using the LED fluorimetry technique. The average value of uranium (13.09 μg L −1 ) and annual effective dose (2.18 μSv y −1 ) is found to be within the as reported by WHO (Guidelines for drinking-water quality, World Health Organization, Geneva, 2011) and as reported by AERB (Drinking water specifications in India, Department of Atomic Energy, Mumbai, 2004) recommended safe limits of 30 μg L −1 and 60 μg L −1 respectively. For the evaluation of health risks associated with groundwater, the chemical toxicity risk and radiological risk of uranium in water are also assessed in this study. The activity of natural radionuclides in some locations is found to be high, which might be due to the local geology, hydrology, and type of industries in that region. The current study will benefit both residents and government agencies regarding uranium exposure to drinking water.

Abstract:Natural radioactivity measurement, radiation monitoring of the region, dose assessment and interpretation of radiological-related parameters are crucial aspects from the public awareness and environmental safety point of view. The ionising radiations (gamma-rays) emitted from radionuclides such as 226Ra, 232Th and 40K present in environmental materials contributes significantly to the external radiation dose received by the public. High-efficiency gamma spectrometry based on a 4″ × 4″ NaI (Tl) detector was employed for estimating activity concentrations of the gamma-emitting radioelements. The spectra from the detector were recorded using a PC-based 1k multichannel analyser system (WinTMCA 32). Each sample spectrum was acquired for a counting period of 60 000 s (16.67 hr). Assuming the daughter products of 226Ra and 232Th in equilibrium, the activity concentration of these radionuclides were estimated by using the prominent gamma photo peaks of daughter products. Using the same technique, dose-related radiological parameters were calculated for all the samples. The activity concentrations of the radionuclides and the dose-related parameters for the samples were found to be comparable with the global literature values. The data generated from our study will contribute to the baseline radiological data of the region.

Abstract:This study assesses the radioactivity levels in coastal drinking water sources from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, India, by collecting water samples from 56 locations in four phases over two years: twice during summer (April–June) and twice during winter (November–January). We measured gross alpha, gross beta, and 226 Ra activity concentrations using an alpha and beta counter and a radiochemical separation method for 226 Ra analysis. In Andhra Pradesh, mean gross alpha activity ranged from 1.0 mBq L− 1 to 7.3 mBq L− 1 , while in Odisha, it varied from 1.0 mBq L− 1 to 45.3 mBq L− 1 . Gross beta activity levels ranged from below detection limit (BDL) to 167 mBq L− 1 in Andhra Pradesh and from BDL to 236 mBq L− 1 in Odisha. The mean 226 Ra activity in Andhra Pradesh ranged from BDL to 1.45 mBq L− 1 , whereas in Odisha, it varied from BDL to 5.9 mBq L− 1 . These findings are significant for water quality assessment in these regions, providing a valuable reference for researchers. Statistical analysis and dose estimations confirmed that the measured activities and corresponding dose levels were well below WHO-recommended limits, ensuring the safety of drinking water in the studied areas.

Abstract:Exhalation rate of 222 Rn from soil samples and the activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K were studied in soil samples of Davanagere district, Karnataka state, India. 222 Rn exhalation rate was measured using smart radon monitor (SRM). The mass exhalation rate of 222 Rn varies from 6.9 ± 1.7 to 38.5 ± 3.3 mBqkg −1 h −1 with a geometric mean of 20.1 ± 2.5 mBqkg −1 h −1 . The surface exhalation rate of 222 Rn varies from 0.39 ± 0.1 to 2.15 ± 0.18 Bqm −2 h −1 with a geometric mean of 1.12 ± 0.14 Bqm −2 h −1 . Activity concentrations of the radionuclide in soil samples were measured using HPGe detector. 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K concentration varied from 32.0 to 106.1 Bqkg −1 , from 19.6 to 78.8 Bqkg −1 and from 20.1 to 968.0 Bqkg −1 respectively. The average activity of 226 Ra in the soil samples was 63.2 Bqkg −1 which is higher than the global average and the Indian average value, whereas the activities of 232 Th and 40 K were found to be 34.9 Bqkg −1 and 458.8 Bqkg −1 respectively and are comparable to global average values. When the structural and physical properties of the soil samples were similar, radon exhalation rate from soil samples shows good correlation with its 226 Ra activity.

Abstract:The interaction between disrupted lipid homeostasis and immune response is implicated in the pathogenesis of several diseases, but the molecular bridges between the major players are still a matter of controversy. Our systemic study of the inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in the livers of mice exposed to 20-h cytokine/fasting for the first time shows that TNF-alpha interferes with adaptation to fasting and activates harmful proatherogenic pathways, partially through interaction with the insulin-Insig-sterol regulatory element binding protein (Srebp) signaling pathway. In addition to the increased expression of acute-phase inflammatory genes, the most prominent alterations represent modified lipid homeostasis observed on the gene expression and metabolite levels. These include reduction of HDL-cholesterol, increase of LDL-cholesterol, and elevated expression of cholesterogenic genes, accompanied by increase of potentially harmful precholesterol metabolites and suppression of cholesterol elimination through bile acids, likely by farnesoid X receptor-independent mechanisms. On the transcriptional level, a shift from fatty oxidation toward fatty acid synthesis is observed. The concept of the influence of TNF-alpha on the Srebp regulatory network, followed by downstream effects on sterol metabolism, is novel. Observed acute alterations in lipid metabolism are in agreement with chronic disturbances found in patients.

Abstract:Naturally occurring radionuclides rocks are one of the possible sources of indoor and outdoor radiation. Samples were taken from Kolar taluk in Karnataka in order to evaluate the radioactive hazards and natural radioactivity levels in those samples. The activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K in these samples were determined using NaI(Tl) gamma ray spectroscopy. The measured ranged from 5.05 to 171.43 (Bq kg -1 ); 5.04 to 274.64 (Bq kg -1 ); 287.23 to 2603.45 (Bq kg -1 ) for 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K. In this study, the yearly effective radiation dosage, air absorbed gamma radiation dose rate, and hazard index (H in , H ex ), gamma index, activity utilization index, annual gonald dose equivalent were estimated. The study's demonstrate that potassium ( 40 K), a naturally occurring radionuclide, is higher than radium and thorium. The levels of the computed radionuclides were compared to other places in Karnataka and world average value. The relationship between radionuclides was examined using correlation and statistical methods, radiation parameters were also computed. Information on background radioactivity levels and the impacts of radiation on locals in the research area under inquiry is what this study aims to deliver.

Abstract:The activity concentrations of 238 U, 232 Th, and 40 K were determined at 56 sites along the East Coast of India, near the Bay of Bengal, with 31 sites in Odisha and 25 in Andhra Pradesh. In Odisha, average concentrations were 109 ± 13 Bq kg −1 for 238 U, 296 ± 27 Bq kg −1 for 232 Th, and 450 ± 33 Bq kg −1 for 40 K, while in Andhra Pradesh, they were 51 ± 13 Bq kg −1 , 149 ± 16 Bq kg −1 , and 236 ± 21 Bq kg −1 , respectively. Absorbed dose rates and annual effective doses were higher outdoors and indoors in Odisha compared to Andhra Pradesh. The calculated radiological parameters exhibited elevated values at certain sampling locations; however, overall, the values generally complied with regulatory standards.

Abstract:This study evaluated the public health risks of radon ( 222 Rn) in groundwater of Neyyar River Basin (NRB), southwest India. Among the 68 samples, 222 Rn activity ranged from 0.25 to 61.7 Bq/L. Most geological formations, excluding charnockite, exhibited localized radon anomalies (> 11.1 Bq/L). Infants were the most radio-vulnerable age group and probabilistic health risk using Monte Carlo Simulation ranked infants (63.42%) > children (59.31%) > adults (58.57%) in the worst-case scenario. The integration of dose estimation, geospatial risk mapping, and Monte Carlo analysis presents an efficient approach for comprehensively evaluating the health risks associated with radon in groundwater.

Abstract:The concentration of natural radionuclides ( 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K) in the fifty soil samples around the Khetri copper belt is measured using an HPGe detector. The values of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K are found to be lying in the range of 5.2 ± 0.3 to 27.5 ± 0.6 Bq kg −1 , 12.9 ± 0.4 to 38.8 ± 1.3 Bq kg −1 , and 113.3 ± 27.8 to 308.5 ± 31.2 Bq kg −1 respectively. The radium equivalent activity ranged from 38.63 to 93.35 Bq kg −1 with a mean value of 56.21 Bq kg −1 . The values of absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose, and annual gonadal dose rate are also estimated, which comes out to be less than their corresponding world average values. Hazard indices (internal and external) and level indices (alpha and gamma) are also observed to be less than unity. The soil of the study area can be considered safe for people living there because of its low radiological risk.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the occurrence of natural radiation in groundwater with an elevated background level in Juban District, Yemen, and to assess the corresponding health risk. The mean concentrations of U, Th, and K in groundwater were 11.25, 0.15, and 17.35 mg l−1, respectively. The mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 228Ra, and 40K were 94, 216, and 3306 mBq l−1, respectively. 65 % of the groundwater samples were above the WHO guidance level for 228Ra in water. The maximum concentrations of 226Ra, Th, and 228Ra were found around the fault zones in the basement aquifer while the concentrations of U increase down-gradient of Juan District. The principal factors controlling the occurrence and concentrations of radionuclides are aquifer type, leaching behaviour, characteristics of fracture systems, salinity, and water flow path. The annual effective doses due to ingestion of the water were estimated for infant and adult groups. The mean annual effective dose for infants was 1.97 mSv year−1 which is almost twenty times the WHO guideline level for drinking water. The ingestion dose deduced for adults and infants is dominated by 228Ra, where the average contribution from 228Ra in infants amounted to 90 % and in adults 76 %.

Abstract:In order to assess the radiological baseline, the terrestrial radionuclide contents (226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) and radon exhalation rate were measured in the soil samples collected from the vicinity of Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand, India. Based on the measured activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, different radiological parameters have been estimated to assess the radiation hazards arising out of the use of these soil samples as a building material in the studied region. The annual effective doses for distinct organs and tissues have also been calculated in order to assess total radiological risk. The overall radiological dose was less than the recommended values of 1 mSv y−1. No significant correlation was observed between 226Ra, 232Th concentration and its exhalation rate in the studied soil samples.

Abstract:This study reports the 222 Rn, 220 Rn, and their progeny concentration in Shivamogga district by using SSNTD's based pin hole dosimeters and deposition-based progeny sensor. The average indoor 222 Rn and 220 Rn concentration varies from 8.14 to 146 Bq m −3 and 13.01 to 157 Bq m −3 with a mean value of 60.61 and 61.77 Bq m −3 . The EEC for 222 Rn and 220 Rn ranges from 1.55 to 19 Bq m −3 and 0.44 to 6 Bq m −3 with a mean value of 7.29 and 2.66 Bq m −3 . The annual average equilibrium factor for 222 Rn is well within the global mean values of 0.4, while the thoron is bit higher than specified global mean values of 0.02. The annual effective dose varies from 0.31 to 2.5 mSvy −1 with a mean value of 1.1 mSvy −1 .

Abstract:Gamma spectrometry was employed to determine activity concentration of naturally occurring radionuclides 238 U, 232 Th and 40 K in sediment samples collected from Vellanathuruthu to Thumpoly of Kerala Coast using NaI(Tl) detector and to evaluate the radiation hazards. The levels and distribution of radionuclides in sediments from this coastal area have been determined. The activities ranges and mean (in bracket) values for 238 U, 232 Th, and 40 K are 78.92 to 1493 Bq kg −1 (552.63), 94.76 to 2856.46 (851.24) Bq kg −1 and 30 to 2399.20 (678.61) Bq kg −1 respectively. The mean activity of 238 U, 232 Th, and 40 K are higher than the global average values (35 Bq kg −1 for 238 U, 400 Bq kg −1 for 40 K, and 30 Bq kg −1 for 232 Th) of these radionuclides in the sediment and it may be due the presence of rich deposits of black sands. The radium equivalent activity was estimated to range from 216.74 to 5762.48 Bq kg −1 (1822.17). The average absorbed dose rate was determined to vary from 94.96 to 2515.83 nGyh −1 (797.97) and the annual effective dose was estimated to range from 0.12 to 3.09 mSvy −1 (0.98). Additionally, it was estimated that the average external hazard index was 4.92 and the average internal hazard index was 6.41 respectively. The computed radiation indices for all samples were compared to internationally accepted standards, showing that they are above the recommended limits. The results of the present investigation indicate that the radioactivity in the region is slightly above the global average values.

Abstract:高安動脈炎の成因,病態に関し遺伝要因の関与が注目されている. HLA検索より本症患者にはHLA A24-Bw52-Dw12の出現頻度の高いことが確かめられたので(Angiology 33:98, 1982), 80名の患者につきClass IIIに属する補体蛋白多型を調査した.その結果,本症患者ではC4A2(x2=27.2, rr=3.8, p<0.01) C4BQ0(8.7, 2.1, p<0.01)の出現頻度が有意に高い結果が得られた.しかもBw52(+)の患者37名中35名はC4A2-4BQ0のhaplotypeを有していた.すなわち本症患者ではA24-Bw52-C4A2-C4BQ0-Dw12のcomplotypeと連鎖不平衡にある遺伝要因の関与が考えられる.さらにC4BQ0(null type)につきDNAの存在をしらべたところ欠除している例はなくgene conversionの可能性が示唆された.
