Abstract:The concentration of natural radionuclides ( 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K) in the fifty soil samples around the Khetri copper belt is measured using an HPGe detector. The values of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K are found to be lying in the range of 5.2 ± 0.3 to 27.5 ± 0.6 Bq kg −1 , 12.9 ± 0.4 to 38.8 ± 1.3 Bq kg −1 , and 113.3 ± 27.8 to 308.5 ± 31.2 Bq kg −1 respectively. The radium equivalent activity ranged from 38.63 to 93.35 Bq kg −1 with a mean value of 56.21 Bq kg −1 . The values of absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose, and annual gonadal dose rate are also estimated, which comes out to be less than their corresponding world average values. Hazard indices (internal and external) and level indices (alpha and gamma) are also observed to be less than unity. The soil of the study area can be considered safe for people living there because of its low radiological risk.

Abstract:This study investigates the levels of natural and artificial radioactivity in rice samples collected from various local markets in Islamabad, Pakistan. The 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K activity concentrations were measured through gamma-ray spectrometry with a NaI(Tl) detector. The average activity concentrations were 1.67 ± 1.19 Bq kg −1 for 226 Ra, 3.31 ± 1.83 Bq kg −1 for 232 Th, and 88.51 ± 11.65 Bq kg −1 for 40 K. Calculated radium equivalent (Ra eq ) values ranged from 7.35 to 18.08 Bq kg −1 , with a mean value of 11.11 Bq kg −1 , all below the permissible maximum of 370 Bq kg −1 . The absorbed dose rates ranged from 6.85 to 16.39 nGy h −1 , with an average of 10.64 nGy h −1 , falling below the acceptable limit of 51 nGy h −1 . The outdoor and indoor radiation hazard indices (H ex and H in ) had mean values of 0.03, both below the threshold value of one. The external and internal hazard indices ( I γ and I α ) were both 0.088, also below the critical value of one. The excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) ranged from 0.28 to 0.11, with a mean value of 0.18, which is less than the critical value of one. Overall, the radioactivity levels in the analyzed rice samples are within the acceptable limits set by the International Commission on Radiological Protection and are below global averages. These results offer important insights into the radiological safety of rice consumption in the study area.

Abstract:This study was undertaken to quantify the natural radioactivity in soil and associated radiation exposure to the inhabitants residing in Sonipat district, Haryana, India. A total of 120 soil samples were collected from 30 villages. These soil samples were quantified for naturally occurring radioactive materials activity using HPGe detector. Activity concentration of 40K, 232Th and 226Ra in the soil samples of study area ranged from 463.8–696.9 Bq kg−1, 31.4–37.9 Bq kg−1and 41.5–54.9 Bq kg−1, respectively. Radium equivalent (Raeq) values of all samples are lesser than maximum permissible limit (370 Bq kg"1) acceptable for safer use of soil as building material. Average value of Air absorbed dose (AAD) in the study area was comparable to the Indian average of 64 nGy h−1. Annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE) in the study area was 0.0831 µSv y−1 that is lower than the global average of 70.0 µSv y−1. Annual Gonadal equivalent dose in study area was within the safe limit (1 µSv y−1). Excess life time cancer risk due to natural radioactivity of soil to population of area is negligibly small. Values of Gamma index (Iã), outside hazard index (Hex) and inside hazard index (Hin) are less than unity, indicating that there is no considerable health risk caused by natural radioactivity in soil in the study area.

Abstract:In this study, an initiative has been taken to study the food safety of breads, prepared using wheat grains from different areas of Punjab and Haryana, India. Natural radioactivity ( 40 K, 238 U, and 232 Th radionuclides) was measured for prepared food samples, using NaI (Tl) Gamma Ray Spectrometer. Breads made from the studied wheat grain flours were found to be within safe limits. Further nutritional analysis of the formulated breads and detection of radiation in the products indicated that the collected wheat grains for bread formations were consumable and safe for the population.

Abstract:In order to assess the radiological baseline, the terrestrial radionuclide contents (226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) and radon exhalation rate were measured in the soil samples collected from the vicinity of Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand, India. Based on the measured activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, different radiological parameters have been estimated to assess the radiation hazards arising out of the use of these soil samples as a building material in the studied region. The annual effective doses for distinct organs and tissues have also been calculated in order to assess total radiological risk. The overall radiological dose was less than the recommended values of 1 mSv y−1. No significant correlation was observed between 226Ra, 232Th concentration and its exhalation rate in the studied soil samples.

Abstract:The estimation of radioactivity level is vital for population health risk assessment and geological point of view and can be evaluated as rate of exhalation and source concentration (226Ra, 232Th and 0K). The present study deals with the soil samples for investigation of radionuclides content and exhalation rates of radon –thoron gas from different sites in northern Haryana, India. Absorbed dose and associated index estimated in the present study are the measures of environmental radioactivity to inhalation dose. Effective doses received by different tissues and organs by considering different occupancy and conditions are also measured. Exhalation rates of radon and thoron are measured with active scintillation monitors based on alpha spectroscopy namely scintillation radon (SRM) and thoron (STM) monitors respectively. Sample height was optimized before measurement of thoron exhalation rate using STM. Average values of radon and thoron exhalation are found 16.6 ± 0.7 mBqkg−1h−1 and 132.1 ± 2.6 mBqm−2s−1 respectively. Also, a simple approach was also adopted, to evaluate the thoron exhalation which accomplished a lot of challenges, the results are compared with the data obtained experimentally. The study is useful in the nationwide mapping of radon and thoron exhalation rates for understanding the environmental radioactivity status.

Abstract:Natural radionuclides are present in food items at different levels, influenced by factors like background radiation, climate, and agricultural practices. These radionuclides play a crucial role in internal radiation exposure in humans. Notably, radionuclides within the decay series 238U and 232Th as well as 40K are significant concerns in radiation protection due to their prevalence and potential health risks. The activity concentrations of radionuclides 238U, 232Th, and 40K in several food crops consumed within Lagos city in Nigeria were measured using gamma spectrometry. The concentration of 238U, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 0.90 to 55.30, BDL to 161.60 and 10.30 to 1075.20 Bqkg-1, respectively. The average radionuclide activity concentrations are below the worldwide average values set by UNSCEAR in 2000, which are 35, 30, and 400 Bqkg-1 for 238U, 232Th, and 40K, respectively. The study calculated the annual effective dose for individuals consuming the studied food items, and the annual internal dose from ingesting was found to be 8.95×10-04 μSvy-1. It's noteworthy that this computed value is below the worldwide value of 0.32 mSv y-1 set for the public. Additionally, the excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) value was 3.13 × 10−3 μSvy-1, which is within the world safe limit value (2.9 × 10−4 μSvy-1). Therefore, there is no potential radiological risk associated with the measured data.

Abstract:Soil samples from vegetable farmland in densely populated wards of Nepal were analyzed for natural radionuclide levels, employing a NaI(Tl) 3" 3" gamma detector. The study aimed to evaluate the causes of radiation risk, attributing it to soil contamination resulting from the rapid urbanization and concretization that followed the earthquake in 2015. The activity concentration of radium-226, thorium-232, and potassium-40 and the ranges observed are 2.080±0.084–33.675±1.356 Bq kg , 17.222±0.198–119.949±1.379 Bq kg , and 11.203 ± 0.325–748.828±21.716 Bq kg , respectively. The average values obtained for hazard indices are as follows: radium equivalent activity (82.779 Bq kg ), absorbed dose rate (36.394 nGy h ), annual effective dose equivalent (0.045 mSv yearr ), gamma index (0.291), external hazard index (0.224), internal hazard index (0.253), excess lifetime cancer risk (0.159), annual gonadal dose equivalent (243.278 mSv year ), alpha index (0.054), and activity utilization index (0.716). However, in most places, thorium-232 concentration is greater than those of the world average and recommended values. In specific locations such as Ward 4 in Baluwatar, the soil was found to have concentrations of Ra and K exceeding recommended limits. Despite this localized concern, the overall analysis of hazard indices across the studied areas revealed that most values were within permissible limits. This suggests that, on a broader scale, radiation exposure may not be a significant concern in the investigated regions. Nonetheless, the study recommends regular monitoring in additional locations to ensure a comprehensive and ongoing assessment of radiation levels.

Abstract:This study investigates the activity concentration of natural radionuclides in a diverse range of food samples in the Koya district markets food baskets, including both domestic and imported products. The samples cover annual crops (e.g. coffee, tea, kidney beans), tree nuts (e.g. almonds, pistachios), and other items (e.g. beef, fish, milk) by using a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. This research addresses a notable gap by providing baseline data on radionuclide concentrations and assessing potential health risks. Average activity concentrations for 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were 0.943, 0.367, and 191.8 Bq kg −1 , respectively. Radium equivalent activity values ranged from 2.88–58.48 Bq kg −1 , all below the safety limit. The average excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) was 0.154 mSv a −1 , indicating safety for most samples, though coffee and tea showed higher levels. This study provides new data crucial for future research and regulatory monitoring, underscoring the need for further investigation into geological impacts on radionuclide levels.

Abstract:Radionuclide activity of the selected radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K was measured in surface soil samples collected from 40 villages of the western part of Yadgir district of Karnataka. A 4″ × 4″ NaI (Tl) detector based on a gamma spectrometer is used for the estimation of radionuclides. The major type of soil in this region is sandy and red. The 222Rn activity concentrations in drinking water were determined by the Emanometry method. The 222Rn activity in ground water is found to vary from 1.73 to 155.6 Bql-1. The total annual effective doses because of 222Rn inhalation and ingestion range from 4.72 to 424.84 μSv y-1 with an average value of 108.8 μSv y-1, respectively. Among the sampling stations, Shahapur and Shorapur soil samples show higher activity values than the Kembhavi and Hunasagi sampling stations soil samples.

Abstract:Radioactive elements have coexisted in our environment and the health risks assessment for humans associated with the presence of these radioactive elements in the environment is necessary. This study was conducted in the Mansa district of Punjab for estimating the health risks to the people living in the region. 22 Soil and water samples from collected from various locations in the district. The range of Ra, Th and K in the soil samples varied from 28.09 Bq/kg to 55.91 Bq/kg, from 23.32 Bq/kg to 79.64 Bq/kg and from 189.22 Bq/kg to 425.58 Bq/kg, respectively. Doses to different organs have been calculated and ultimately Expected lifetime cancer risk varies from 0.79 × 10 −3 to 1.46 × 10 −3 for indoor and 0.08 × 10 −3 to 0.15 × 10 −3 for outdoor which is well below the safe limit of 3.5 × 10 −3 . The average concentration of Uranium in groundwater samples is found to be 37.95 μg/L, which is above the World Health Organisation's (WHO) standard limit of 30 μg/L. But the values of Life time average daily dose (LADD) and Hazard quotient (HQ) is found to be below the standard limit by WHO. Bones are found to be the most affected organ followed by Kidneys from the study of organ specific doses. The study suggests more intense detailed survey of Mansa district by increasing the number of sampling sites and correlate it with the other water and soil quality parameters.

Abstract:Natural elements like uranium and its by-products can cause health problems if they are present in groundwater at excessive concentrations. Some industrial activities are known to elevate uranium concentrations, such as uranium mining, phosphate fertilizer production, nuclear power plants, metal processing, and coal combustion. This study gives information about the uranium concentration in groundwater samples collected from distinct water sources like hand pumps and tube wells from a variety of depths and numerous locations in Yamuna Nagar, Near Shivalik Hills, and the Origin of Saraswati River, India. Uranium concentration was measured using the LED fluorimetry technique. The average value of uranium (13.09 μg L −1 ) and annual effective dose (2.18 μSv y −1 ) is found to be within the as reported by WHO (Guidelines for drinking-water quality, World Health Organization, Geneva, 2011) and as reported by AERB (Drinking water specifications in India, Department of Atomic Energy, Mumbai, 2004) recommended safe limits of 30 μg L −1 and 60 μg L −1 respectively. For the evaluation of health risks associated with groundwater, the chemical toxicity risk and radiological risk of uranium in water are also assessed in this study. The activity of natural radionuclides in some locations is found to be high, which might be due to the local geology, hydrology, and type of industries in that region. The current study will benefit both residents and government agencies regarding uranium exposure to drinking water.

Abstract:Radionuclides predominantly contribute to the radiological and chemical doses incurred by human beings. Among numerous radionuclides, uranium stands out as the primary contributor to human exposure, raising concerns on a global scale. The presence of radionuclides in groundwater presents a notable health risk to individuals consuming the water and the surrounding environment. Groundwater samples collected from various locations in the Nawanshahr and Rupnagar districts of Punjab, India, underwent analysis to estimate uranium levels. The concentration range in the studied areas varied from 11.98 to 67 μg l −1 . The study disclosed the retention of uranium in various organs and tissues, including the kidneys, liver, skin, gastrointestinal tract, bones, and urinary bladder. Time-dependent studies indicated a non-saturation behavior of uranium in bones, liver, kidneys, and other soft tissues. Dosimetric models were employed to calculate radiological doses for specific organs and assess chemical toxicity, forming a crucial component of a comprehensive health risk assessment.

Abstract:Human populations are being exposed to a wide spectrum of radiation from soils as a result of the availability of radiation sources. Assessing the ecological and health effects of radionuclides in soils is crucial to support the optimal soil management practices but large-scale studies are limited. This study compiled data on radionuclides ( 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, 238 U, and 137 Cs) in soils located across the world (44 countries and 159 places) between 2008 and 2022 and applied radiological hazards indices and several multivariate statistical approaches. The average activity concentration (Bq/kg) of 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, 238 U, and 137 Cs were 408.56, 144.80, 508.78, 532.78, and 83.12, respectively, whereas 226 Ra, 232 Th, 40 K, and 238 U exceeded the standard limits. The principal component analysis explained more than 91% of variation in soils. Based on the geoaccumulation index, 40 K posed moderately to heavy contamination whereas 238 U and 226 Ra posed moderate contamination in soils. Moreover, the mean values of radiological hazards evaluation such as radium equivalent activity (487.17 Bq/kg), external radiation hazard indices (1.32), internal hazard indices (2.15), absorbed dose rate (247.86 nGyh −1 ), annual effective dose rate (1.82 mSvy −1 ), activity utilization index (4.54) and excess lifetime cancer risk (63.84 × 10 –4 ) were higher than recommended limit suggesting significant radiological risks in study region soils. The findings indicated that the study area soils were contaminated by radionuclides and unsafe for hazards in terms of the health risks linked with studied radioactive contents. The study is valuable for mapping radioactivity across the globe to determine the level of radioactivity hazards.

Abstract:The presence of underlying uranium deposits may contaminate the upper soil of a region. We have carried out a detailed investigation of radionuclides (Ra, Th, and K) present in the soil around the reported uranium deposit site in the Sikar district of Rajasthan, India. Measurements are carried out using the state-of-the-art gamma-ray spectroscopy (HPGe detector) technique. The specific activity of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K are found in the range of 9.5 ± 0.5–50.6 ± 1.0 Bq kg −1 , 11.0 ± 0.4–83.2 ± 1.5 Bq kg −1 , and 177 ± 13–753 ± 47 Bq kg −1 with the mean values of 17.8 ± 7.5 Bq kg −1 , 22.6 ± 13.4 Bq kg −1 , and 393 ± 76 Bq kg −1 respectively. The average value of Ra Eq. activity is 80.4 Bq kg −1 , below the recommended limit of 370 Bq kg −1 . For radiological implications in the study area, the indoor and outdoor absorbed dose rates and age-dependent annual effective dose are estimated, which are also found below their prescribed safe limit values. The mean value of other hazard indices (H in and H ex ) and level indices (I α and I γ ) are less than unity. Our study shows that the underlying uranium deposits do not contaminate the soil of the studied area and the soil is safe to use for various purposes.

Abstract:Groundwater is in direct contact with the soil and rocks that dissolve many compounds and minerals including uranium and its daughter products. 210Po is one of the decay products of 238U series that cause internal radiation dose in humans when consumed in the form of water and food, including sea food. Therefore, activities of 210Po have been studied in ground and surface water, and in food samples that are commonly used in Chamarajanagar region of Karnataka, India. The average 210Po concentration in bore well water samples and surface water samples are 3.21 and 1.85 mBq L-1, respectively. In raw rice and wheat, the average values of 210Po are 96 and 41 mBq kg-1, respectively. In millets and pulses, the average activity of 210Po is 157 and 79 mBq kg-1, respectively. Among food items, the highest activity of 1.3 kBq kg-1 is observed in marine crabs and the lowest activity of 2.6 mBq kg-1 is found in milk samples. The average ingestion dose due to 210Po in ground and surface water are 2.8 and 1.62 μSv y-1, respectively. The ingestion dose due to various food samples to the population is also calculated. Total ingestion dose due to 210Po to pure vegetarian population and general population are 38.09 and 590.80 μSv y-1, respectively. The concentration of 210Po in water samples and food samples of this region are in a comparable range with the world and Indian average values and lies well below the recommended guideline level.

In an attempt to evaluate the radiological burdens resulting from tin mining activities in Nigeria, farm soil and sixty-two samples of different food crops grown around tin mining areas were evaluated for the activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K using a high-purity germanium detector. The mean activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in soil were 64.6 ± 29.5, 72.03 ± 28.73 and 680.6 ± 324.3 Bq/kg, respectively. These values were found to be higher than their corresponding world average values. However, the mean activity concentrations of the measured radionuclides in plants were below their respective world average values, as reported by UNSCEAR. The overall average annual ingestion dose due to the consumption of the analysed plants was 151 μSv/y, which is below the reported world average value of 290 μSv/y. The results obtained show that the hazard indices were low enough to cause any immediate radiological health complications due to the ingestion of the crops grown in the studied areas.

Abstract:Natural radioactivity measurement, radiation monitoring of the region, dose assessment and interpretation of radiological-related parameters are crucial aspects from the public awareness and environmental safety point of view. The ionising radiations (gamma-rays) emitted from radionuclides such as 226Ra, 232Th and 40K present in environmental materials contributes significantly to the external radiation dose received by the public. High-efficiency gamma spectrometry based on a 4″ × 4″ NaI (Tl) detector was employed for estimating activity concentrations of the gamma-emitting radioelements. The spectra from the detector were recorded using a PC-based 1k multichannel analyser system (WinTMCA 32). Each sample spectrum was acquired for a counting period of 60 000 s (16.67 hr). Assuming the daughter products of 226Ra and 232Th in equilibrium, the activity concentration of these radionuclides were estimated by using the prominent gamma photo peaks of daughter products. Using the same technique, dose-related radiological parameters were calculated for all the samples. The activity concentrations of the radionuclides and the dose-related parameters for the samples were found to be comparable with the global literature values. The data generated from our study will contribute to the baseline radiological data of the region.
