Abstract:The incidence and mortality rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has changed in recent years. Our goal is to determine the epidemiological pattern of NPC to help policymakers allocate limited medical resources. Detailed information about NPC from 2009 to 2019 was collected from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 database. Age-standardized rates (ASRs) and corresponding estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) were calculated to assess NPC’s incidence and mortality trends. Globally, there was a consistent increase in the NPC incidence cases from 2009 to 2019 (from 121.65 × 103 cases in 2009 to 176.50 × 103 cases in 2019, increasing by 45.09%). The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of NPC increased from 1.81 in 2009 to 2.12 in 2019 (EAPC = 1.59, 95% CI 1.36–1.81). On the contrary, the mortality of NPC showed a downward trend (ASDR: 0.93 in 2009 and 0.86 in 2019; EAPC = − 0.63, 95% CI − 0.78 to − 0.48), and it was negatively correlated with the social demographic index (SDI) in most regions. Both incidence and mortality rates of high-incidence territories tended to be stable or decline. Males had significantly higher incidence and mortality of NPC than females. The number of patients with onset age greater than 50 years old accounted for the highest proportion. We found that smoking, occupational exposure to formaldehyde, and alcohol use were the main risk factors for NPC-related mortality. Globally, the incidence rate of NPC has been slightly increasing, while the mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) have been decreasing. NPC burden in high-middle and middle SDI areas was the heaviest. The current prevention strategy should be repositioned, and some countries should formulate more targeted approaches to reduce the current burden of NPC.

Abstract:Background: To identify the 100 most-cited papers that have contributed to the understanding and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).Methods: We searched the NPC-related papers between 2000 and 2019 using the Web of Science database on October 12, 2022. Papers were identified in descending order according to the number of citations. The top 100 papers were analyzed.Results: These 100 most cited papers on NPC have been cited for a total of 35,273 times, with a median number of citations of 281 times. There were 84 research papers and 16 review papers. The Journal of Clinical Oncology (n=17), International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics (n=13), and Cancer Research (n=9) published the most papers. Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention, Lancet, Cancer Cell, Molecular Cancer, and the New England Journal of Medicine had the largest average citations per paper. China contributed the most papers (n=71), followed by USA (n=13), Singapore (n=4) and, France (n=4). There were 55 clinical research papers and 29 laboratory research papers. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy technology (n=13), concurrent chemoradiotherapy (n=9), and neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (n=5) were the top three research topics. Epstein-Barr virus-related genes (n=9) and noncoding RNA (n=8) were the research domains in laboratory research papers. The top three contributors were Jun Ma (n=9), Anthony T C Chan (n=8), and Anne Wing-Mui Lee (n=6).Conclusions: This study provides an overview of the major areas of interest in the field of NPC with bibliometric analyses. This analysis recognizes some important contributions in the field of NPC and stimulates future investigations in the scientific community.

Abstract:To identify the top 100 most impactful articles in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).Articles on NPC from 1970 to 2018 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS). These articles were ranked in descending order based on the number of times they were cited, and all titles and abstracts were screened to identify the top 100 most-cited articles.The earliest and most recent articles were published in 1971 and 2016, respectively. The most prolific decade was the 2000s, with 51 articles published. The highest citation count reached 1223 and the lowest was 155. Thirty-four journals contributed to the 100 articles, with the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics contributing the most articles (n=16). Notable contribution origins were Hong Kong (n=34), the United States (n=26), and China (mainland, n=12). The top three contributors were Chan ATC, Lee AWM, and Lo KW who were from Hong Kong. The types of articles included basic research (n=50), clinical research (n=36), and reviews (n=14).This study identified the top 100 most impactful articles in NPC and stressed the multidisciplinary and multimodal nature of NPC management. Understanding historical articles may guide future NPC study.

A bibliometric study of the nasopharyngeal cancer immunotherapy knowledge map

Abstract:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common malignant tumors, and stages III and IV are frequently diagnosed. In recent years, immunotherapy has achieved remarkable results in recurrent/metastatic NPC, and many studies related to immunotherapy for NPC have been published. However, to date, no relevant bibliometric studies have been published. The trends and research focus on NPC immunotherapy are analyzed in this study through bibliometric analysis, which is conducive to better understanding the status quo and future trends of immunotherapy for NPC. The Web of Science Core Collection was used to collect literature on NPC immunotherapy. These publications were analyzed using bibliometric methods from the aspects of country/region, institution, author (co-cited author), journal (co-cited journal), references, and keywords to determine the research focus and trends in the field. A total of 510 English studies were published between January 1, 2000 and September 1, 2023. The number of articles published increased rapidly in 2016. China ranked first in the number of publications (n = 254), followed by the United States (n = 127). Sun Yat-sen University had the largest number of publications (n = 74). In terms of authors, Comoli P is the most cited author among the co-cited authors. The journal publishing the largest number of studies on NPC immunotherapy is Frontiers in Oncology (impact factor (2022) = 4.7). Five of the top 10 highly cited publications came from China. Keyword analysis reveals that infiltrating lymphocytes, PD-L1, and the tumor microenvironment are recent research focuses on nasopharyngeal cancer immunotherapy. Immunotherapy research for nasopharyngeal cancer is a recent trend. Nasopharyngeal cancer immunotherapy research has mainly focused on immune checkpoint inhibitors and the tumor microenvironment. Notably, China has made significant contributions to this field.

Research landscape of radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma from 1959 to 2022: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Background: Radiotherapy, as the main treatment method for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), has evolved over time, but there has been no bibliometric study on NPC radiotherapy to date. In our study, the scientific achievements of NPC radiotherapy around the world were evaluated by bibliometric analyses, and the previous research hotspots and future trends are described. Methods: Original articles related to NPC radiotherapy were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. To identify research hotspots and future trends, countries/regions, institutions, journals, references, authors, and keywords were evaluated and visualized by Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. Results: From 1959 to 2022, 7139 original articles were collected. The annual publications showed an increasing trend, especially after 2011. China had the most publications (n = 3719, 52.09 %). Sun Yat-sen University has the most publications and citations among institutions. Jun Ma is most productive and SR Baker has the highest co-cited centrality. International Journal of Radiation Oncology-Biology-Physics is the core journal, with most publications, citations and co-citations. Analysis of keywords showed intensity-modulated radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy were the main keywords, and multicenter showed the strongest burst. Conclusion: NPC radiotherapy has attracted increasing attention, and precision and artificial intelligence may be the future trends in this field.

Abstract:Immunotherapy is a promising strategy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a common and aggressive malignancy with poor prognosis. However, the literature lacks a comprehensive and objective overview of the current research status and trends of immunotherapy-related fields in NPC. We performed a bibliometric analysis of 513 original articles and reviews in English on immunotherapy for NPC from the Web of Science Core Collection database, using CiteSpace and Bibliometrix software tools. We visualized the development trend of publications, the distribution of countries/regions, the co-occurrence of keywords, the collaboration and citation of authors, the citation of journals, the evolution of topics, and the thematic map. We found that the publication volume increased sharply after 2017, with China as the main contributor and leader, the US as an important partner, and the Netherlands as a potential innovator. The research focused on immune checkpoint inhibitors and cell therapy, which were also the hotspots of clinical trials. Tumor microenvironment, immune infiltration, multicenter studies, and novel immunotherapy were the frontier topics and the key challenges for future research. CD137l-DC, lymphoma, and chimeric antigen receptor were emerging topics with good prospects. Our study provides a valuable insight into the research status and trends of immunotherapy for NPC, which may guide future research directions and clinical applications.

Abstract:Purpose: Acupuncture has been used for managing cancer-related symptoms. However, there are still few studies concerning the overall trends in acupuncture therapy on cancer based on bibliometric analysis. This study aims to demonstrate the current status and trends in this field over the past 2 decades. Methods: Articles were retrieved from the Web of Science from 2000 to 2019. CiteSpace was used for co-authorship network of countries/institutions, dual-map analysis, and detecting the keywords with citation bursts. VOSviewer was used to construct networks based on co-authorship and co-citation analysis of authors, and co-occurrence of keywords. Results: A total of 927 articles and reviews were included in the final analysis. The number of publications has steadily increased with some fluctuations among years. The country and institution contributing most to this field are the USA and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Mao JJ was the most productive author and Molassiotis A ranked first in the cited authors. The co-occurrence analysis revealed 5 clusters (including "clinical trials," "clinical studies on chemotherapy/radiation-induced symptoms," "CAM therapy for cancer," "clinical studies on vasomotor symptoms," and "systematic reviews"). Most recent keyword bursts were "neuropathic pain," "arthralgia," "prevention," "supportive care," and "integrative medicine". Conclusions: The annual publication output would increase rapidly in the next decade, which shows a promising future in this research field. Future research hotspots would focus on the role of acupuncture in neuropathic pain, arthralgia, prevention, supportive care, and integrative medicine.

Abstract:In the ionic title complex, (C13H11N2)2[Ni(C4N2S2)2], the NiII ion is located on an inversion centre so the asymmetric unit contains one-half [Ni(mnt)2]2− dianion (mnt2− is maleonitriledithiolate) and one 1-(3-cyanobenzyl)pyridinium cation ([CNBzPy]+). The NiII ion in the [Ni(mnt)2]2− anion is coordinated by four S atoms of two mnt2− ligands, and exhibits square-planar coordination geometry. In the [CNBzPy]+ cation, the benzene and pyridine rings are twisted with respect to the C/C/N plane incorporating the methylene C atom that links them. Abstract:The past three decades have borne witness to many advances in the understanding of the molecular biology and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), an Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)-associated cancer endemic to southern China, southeast Asia and north Africa. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of key research findings regarding NPC pathogenesis, treatment, screening and biomarker development. We describe how technological advances have led to the advent of proton therapy and other contemporary radiotherapy approaches, and emphasize the relentless efforts to identify the optimal sequencing of chemotherapy with radiotherapy through decades of clinical trials. Basic research into the pathogenic role of EBV and the genomic, epigenomic and immune landscape of NPC has laid the foundations of translational research. The latter, in turn, has led to the development of new biomarkers and therapeutic targets and of improved approaches for individualizing immunotherapy and targeted therapies for patients with NPC. We provide historical context to illustrate the effect of these advances on treatment outcomes at present. We describe current preclinical and clinical challenges and controversies in the hope of providing insights for future investigation.

Abstract:Abstract Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant epithelial carcinoma of the head and neck region which mainly distributes in southern China and Southeast Asia and has a crucial association with the Epstein–Barr virus. Based on epidemiological data, both incidence and mortality of NPC have significantly declined in recent decades grounded on the improvement of living standard and medical level in an endemic region, in particular, with the clinical use of individualized chemotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) which profoundly contributes to the cure rate of NPC patients. To tackle the challenges including local recurrence and distant metastasis in the current NPC treatment, we discussed the implication of using targeted therapy against critical molecules in various signal pathways, and how they synergize with chemoradiotherapy in the NPC treatment. Combination treatment including targeted therapy and IMRT or concurrent chemoradiotherapy is presumably to be future options, which may reduce radiation or chemotherapy toxicities and open new avenues for the improvement of the expected functional outcome for patients with advanced NPC.

Abstract:The incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) exhibits significant variations across different ethnic groups and geographical regions, with Southeast Asia and North Africa being endemic areas. Of note, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is closely associated with almost all of the undifferentiated NPC cases. Over the past three decades, radiation therapy and chemotherapy have formed the cornerstone of NPC treatment. However, recent advancements in immunotherapy have introduced a range of promising approaches for managing NPC. In light of these developments, it has become evident that a deeper understanding of the tumor microenvironment (TME) is crucial. The TME serves a dual function, acting as a promoter of tumorigenesis while also orchestrating immunosuppression, thereby facilitating cancer progression and enabling immune evasion. Consequently, a comprehensive comprehension of the TME and its intricate involvement in the initiation, progression, and metastasis of NPC is imperative for the development of effective anticancer drugs. Moreover, given the complexity of TME and the inter-patient heterogeneity, personalized treatment should be designed to maximize therapeutic efficacy and circumvent drug resistance. This review aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the TME within the context of EBV-induced NPC, with a particular emphasis on its pivotal role in regulating intercellular communication and shaping treatment responses. Additionally, the review offers a concise summary of drug resistance mechanisms and potential strategies for their reversal, specifically in relation to chemoradiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Furthermore, recent advances in clinical trials pertaining to NPC are also discussed.

Abstract:As a malignant tumor type, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is characterized by distinct geographical, ethnic and genetic differences; presenting a major threat to human health in many countries, especially in Southern China. At present, no accurate and effective methods are available for the early diagnosis, efficacious evaluation or prognosis prediction for NPC. As such, a large number of patients have locoregionally advanced NPC at the time of initial diagnosis. Many patients show toxic reactions to overtreatment and have risks of cancer recurrence and distant metastasis owing to insufficient treatment. To solve these clinical problems, high-throughput '-omics' technologies are being used to screen and identify specific molecular biomarkers for NPC. Because of the lack of comprehensive descriptions regarding NPC biomarkers, the present study summarized the research progress that has been made in recent years to discover NPC biomarkers, highlighting the existing problems that require exploration. In view of the lack of authoritative reports at present, study design factors that affect the screening of biomarkers are also discussed here and prospects for future research are proposed to provide references for follow-up studies of NPC biomarkers.

Long-term Trends in the Burden of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in China: A Comprehensive Analysis from 1990 to 2021 and Projections to 2030 Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a significant public health issue in China, with distinctive epidemiological characteristics and evolving trends. This study aims to analyze long-term trends in NPC burden from 1990 to 2021 and provide projections. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database (1990-2021) was utilized to evaluate NPC metrics, including incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Joinpoint regression identified significant changes over time. Age-period-cohort (APC) analyses assessed the effects of age, period, and cohort. A decomposition analysis identified factors influencing changes in NPC incidence, prevalence, and DALYs. Projections were made for future trends up to 2030. RESULTS:In 2021, NPC significantly impacted China, with males experiencing higher incidence (5.16 per 100,000) and mortality rates (2.32 per 100,000) than females. NPC prevalence was 342,477 cases, with males accounting for 260,164. DALYs totaled 982,657, predominantly affecting males. From 1990 to 2021, the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) in China decreased from 4.64 to 3.42 per 100,000, while globally it declined from 1.74 to 1.38 per 100,000. Between 1990 and 2021, trends showed an initial decline in ASIR and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR), followed by a steady increase from 2006 onwards, with males experiencing more significant rises. Mortality rates showed a general downward trend, yet males remained disproportionately affected. Comparative global data indicated that while NPC metrics are declining worldwide, the burden remains higher in China. Decomposition analysis highlighted aging and population growth as major contributors to the NPC burden. Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) projections indicated a continuing rise in age-standardized incidence and prevalence rates for both males and females up to 2030. CONCLUSIONS:The burden of NPC in China remains significant, particularly among the male population. Despite declining mortality rates, the increasing prevalence suggests that more people are living with NPC. Targeted public health interventions are urgently needed to address these gender-specific trends and reduce the disease burden.

Abstract:In patients with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), radiation-induced temporal lobe injury (TLI) is the most dreaded late-stage complication following radiation therapy (RT). We currently lack a definitive algorithmic administration for this entity. In the meantime, the pathogenesis of TLI and the mechanism-based interventions to prevent or treat this adverse effect remain unknown. To better answer the aforementioned questions, it is necessary to comprehend the intellectual foundations and prospective trends of this field through bibliometric analysis.

Abstract:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a severe malignancy arising from the nasopharyngeal epithelium and is southern China’s third most common cancer. With the advancement of treatment methods, early-stage NPC patients usually have a better prognosis and more prolonged survival period than those with other malignant tumors. Most treatment failures are due to distant metastasis or a locally advanced stage of NPC in the initial diagnosis. In addition, approximately 10% of patients develop local recurrence, and 10%–20% of patients experience distant metastasis after treatment. These patients have a poor prognosis, with a median survival of only approximately 10–15 months. In the rapid development of treatment options, the efficacy and safety of some treatments have been validated and approved for first-line treatment, while those of other treatments remain unclear. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in NPC treatment and explain the various therapeutic possibilities in treating locally advanced, recurrent, and metastatic NPC patients.

Abstract:Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare malignancy, endemic in China, that is commonly diagnosed in locally advanced scenarios. Its pathogenesis is strongly associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), an infection for which measuring EBV plasma DNA levels has helped as a prognostic factor guiding treatment options, including a stronger treatment in those with high titers. Additionally, tobacco and alcohol are often implicated in EBV-negative patients. The local disease is treated with radiotherapy alone, preferentially intensity modulated radiotherapy. For locally advanced disease, the backbone treatment is concurrent chemoradiotherapy with the ongoing research dilemma being adding adjuvant chemotherapy or induction chemotherapy. The ongoing research is focused not only on identifying patients that will benefit from adjuvant or induction chemotherapy, but also on identifying the best chemotherapeutic regimen, regimen alternatives to diminish toxicity, the role that immune checkpoint inhibitors play, and the use of molecularly guided treatment targeting patients with NPC whether driven by EBV or tobacco and alcohol. Knowing the precise oncogenesis of NPC not only offers a better understanding of the role that EBV plays in this tumor but also helps create targeted therapies that could potentially block important pathways such as the NF-κB pathway. Much is yet to be done, but the prognosis and management of NPC patients have changed drastically, offering precise treatment methods and excellent control of the disease, even in locally advanced scenarios.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal neoplasm (GN) significantly impact the global cancer burden and mortality, necessitating early detection and treatment. Understanding the evolution and current state of research in this field is vital. AIM To conducts a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of publications from 1984 to 2022 to elucidate the trends and hotspots in the GN risk assessment research, focusing on key contributors, institutions, and thematic evolution. METHODS This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of data from the Web of Science Core Collection database using the "bibliometrix" R package, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. The analysis focused on the distribution of publications, contributions by institutions and countries, and trends in keywords. The methods included data synthesis, network analysis, and visualization of international collaboration networks. RESULTS This analysis of 1371 articles on GN risk assessment revealed a notable evolution in terms of research focus and collaboration. It highlights the United States' critical role in advancing this field, with significant contributions from institutions such as Brigham and Women's Hospital and the National Cancer Institute. The last five years, substantial advancements have been made, representing nearly 45% of the examined literature. Publication rates have dramatically increased, from 20 articles in 2002 to 112 in 2022, reflecting intensified research efforts. This study underscores a growing trend toward interdisciplinary and international collaboration, with the Journal of Clinical Oncology standing out as a key publication outlet. This shift toward more comprehensive and collaborative research methods marks a significant step in addressing GN risks. CONCLUSION This study underscores advancements in GN risk assessment through genetic analyses and machine learning and reveals significant geographical disparities in research emphasis. This calls for enhanced global collaboration and integration of artificial intelligence to improve cancer prevention and treatment accuracy, ultimately enhancing worldwide patient care.

Research trends on cancer neuroscience: a bibliometric and visualized analysis

Abstract:Background: Recently, cancer neuroscience has become the focus for scientists. Interactions between the nervous system and cancer (both systemic and local) can regulate tumorigenesis, progression, treatment resistance, compromise of anti-cancer immunity, and provocation of tumor-promoting inflammation. We assessed the related research on cancer neuroscience through bibliometric analysis and explored the research status and hotspots from 2020 to 2024. Methods: Publications on cancer neuroscience retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Scimago Graphica were used to analyze and visualize the result. Results: A total of 744 publications were retrieved, with an upward trend in the overall number of articles published over the last 5 years. As it has the highest number of publications ( n = 242) and citations (average 13.63 citations per article), the United States holds an absolute voice in the field of cancer neuroscience. The most productive organizations and journals were Shanghai Jiaotong University ( n = 24) and Cancers ( n = 45), respectively. Monje M (H-index = 53), Hondermarck H (H-index = 42), and Amit M (H-index = 39) were the three researchers who have contributed most to the field. From a global perspective, research hotspots in cancer neuroscience comprise nerve/neuron-tumor cell interactions, crosstalk between the nervous system and other components of the tumor microenvironment (such as immune cells), as well as the impact of tumors and tumor therapies on nervous system function. Conclusion: The United States and European countries are dominating the field of cancer neuroscience, while developing countries such as China are growing rapidly but with limited impact. The next focal point in this field is likely to be neurotrophic factors. Cancer neuroscience is still in its infancy, which means that many of the interactions and mechanisms between the nervous system and cancer are not yet fully understood. Further investigation is necessary to probe the interactions of the nervous system with cancer cell subpopulations and other components of the tumor microenvironment.
