Abstract:Plasmonic polycrystals composed of loosely packed plasmonic nanoparticles formed microscale plasmonic grains with random orientations may exhibit interesting optical properties. Their fabrication includes placing nanoparticles in order to form plasmonic grains and forming the random orientation of the plasmonic grains. The seemingly mutually exclusive nanoparticle ordering and random grain orientation processes challenge existing technologies. Here a self-assembled bowl-in-bowl template-confined dewetting process to prepare plasmonic polycrystals is developed. The size and composition of the plasmonic nanoparticles can be conveniently designed before experiments, which are inaccessible to conventional fabrication methods. Complex plasmonic coupling between the Au nanoparticles and the plasmonic grains within the plasmonic polycrystals is observed. The microbowls further endow plasmonic nanostructures with more interesting optical properties arising from multiple scattering processes within the concave bowl surfaces. The broadband response of the plasmonic polycrystals makes them active under 532, 633, and 785 nm laser excitation for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing applications. Finite-difference time-domain simulations are performed to explain the optical properties of the plasmonic polycrystals and the SERS enhancement. The simple template-confined dewetting process provides a powerful approach to design plasmonic polycrystals with application potentials in plasmonic, sensing, and photonic fields.
Atomic-Layer-Deposition Assisted Formation of Wafer-Scale Double-Layer Metal Nanoparticles with Tunable Nanogap for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:A simple high-throughput approach is presented in this work to fabricate the Au nanoparticles (NPs)/nanogap/Au NPs structure for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This plasmonic nanostructure can be prepared feasibly by the combination of rapid thermal annealing (RTA), atomic layer deposition (ALD) and chemical etching process. The nanogap size between Au NPs can be easily and precisely tuned to nanometer scale by adjusting the thickness of sacrificial ALD Al 2 O 3 layer. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation data indicate that most of enhanced field locates at Au NPs nanogap area. Moreover, Au NPs/nanogap/Au NPs structure with smaller gap exhibits the larger electromagnetic field. Experimental results agree well with FDTD simulation data, the plasmonic structure with smaller nanogap size has a stronger Raman intensity. There is highly strong plasmonic coupling in the Au nanogap, so that a great SERS effect is obtained when detecting methylene blue (MB) molecules with an enhancement factor (EF) over 10 7 . Furthermore, this plasmonic nanostructure can be designed on large area with high density and high intensity hot spots. This strategy of producing nanoscale metal gap on large area has significant implications for ultrasensitive Raman detection and practical SERS application.

Abstract:Electrochemical control and the use of electrodeposition in the design of dynamic plasmonics have attracted much attention in recent years. 1 Development of dynamic plasmonic metamaterials is attractive for many applications such as molecular sensing and analysis, environmental monitoring, photo-catalysis, colour changing displays and electrochromic devices such as 'smart' windows. Electrodeposition is one of the most attractive ways to create and reversibly transform nanostructures' shape, size and chemical composition. 2,3 Plasmonics is related to the localised surface excitations of electrons in metal nanostructures due to strong interactions with light. The resulted electric field enhancement due to the surface plasmons can be used to manipulate light–matter. Nanostructured Ag and Au are classic plasmonic materials. While silver is a metal that exhibits many advantages over gold, such as higher extinction coefficients in the blue and UV region of the EM spectrum, sharper extinction bands and extremely high field enhancements, its employment is hindered by low chemical stability. The most recent theoretical analysis suggests that Au-Ag derived nanostructures with controlled geometry, composition, and distribution can create new interesting optical phenomena. 4 By developing Au-Ag based nanostructures, we can then benefit from combining optical properties of Au and Ag and, at the same time, improve the chemical stability of silver. We investigated the electrodeposition of Au and Ag-based arrays of ordered and random nano-particles on indium tin oxide substrates from different solutions and studied their optical properties. We demonstrated that varying the electrodeposition parameters led to changes in both the resonance wavelength and the strength of resonance linked to the structural characteristics (size and shape) and the chemical composition of the deposited particles. Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticle oligomers are important in applications including plasmonics, catalysis, and molecular sensing. These nanostructural units featuring abundant inter-particle junctions are helpful for a physical/ chemical understanding of structure-activity relationships of self-assembled metamaterials. A simple, rapid, and potentially general strategy for the preparation of monodisperse nanoparticle clusters in a homogeneous solution is highly desired for fundamental research toward liquid metamaterials and chemical/ biological applications, but this is however very challenging. Here we report an Ag+ soldering strategy to prepare strongly coupled plasmonic (Au) and catalytic (Pt, Au@Pd (Au core with a Pd shell)) nanoparticle clusters almost instantly (<1 min) in a solution without special synthetic efforts, complicated surface decorations, or structure-directing templates. The resulting clusters are isolatable by agarose gel electrophoresis, resulting in mechanically stable products in high purity. The optical extinctions of Au nanodimers (the simplest and most basic form of a coupled structure) exhibit prominent longitudinal plasmonic coupling for nanoparticles down to 13.3 nm in diameter. Theoretical simulations attribute the strong coupling to the existence of a sub-nm gap (c.a. 0.76 nm) between soldered particles, suggesting an ideal (stable, soluble, monodisperse, and weakly passivated) substrate for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications.
Enhanced control over size, areal density, and shape of substrate-supported Au and Ag nanoparticles by solid-state dewetting and alloying

Abstract:The ability to manipulate the dimensions, areal density, and form of substrate supported Au and Ag nanoparticles is highly desirable for utilizing their plasmonic properties in biosensing, photovoltaics, and nanophotonic applications. The transformation of thin films into the substrate-supported nanostructures by solid-state dewetting (SSD), provides an avenue to manipulate the dimensional aspects of nanostructures simply and cost-effectively on a large scale. However, spontaneous agglomeration of the film produces randomly distributed and non-uniform nanostructures that must be controlled. Here, we have systematically studied the effect of annealing temperature, between 200 °C - 750 °C, on the dewetting morphology evolution of Au, Ag, and Au-Ag bilayer ultrathin films sputter deposited on the c-plane (0 0 0 1) sapphire substrates. Regardless of the film thickness, Ag films dewet faster than Au films and produce spherical NPs, compared to faceted Au NPs, with broader size distribution. Whereas, by the SSD of Au-Ag bilayer ultrathin films, highly spherical and monodisperse AuAg bimetallic NPs can be fabricated. Furthermore, we have shown the possibility of fabricating the AuAg bimetallic NPs of varying compositions by adjusting the thickness of individual layers, thus enabling us to smoothly tune the spectral location of plasmonic resonance within the visible range.

Abstract:Plasmonic metal nanostructures have been attracting great interest due to their unique optical and catalytic properties. Here, we report a simple and mild synthetic approach for the colloidal synthesis of AgAu hollow hexagonal nanoplates (AgAu HHNPs) with multitips through the careful choice of suitable reducing agents. In particular, when a relatively stronger reducing agent (e.g., ascorbic acid, AA) is employed, the deposition rate of Ag and Au adatoms on the walls is faster than the rate of outward diffusion rate of Ag atoms inside Ag nanoplates. This causes more Ag and Au adatoms to be diffused toward the tips of AgAu HHNPs. Interestingly, well-defined AgAu HHNP nanostructures with controlled multitips possess an enhanced localized electromagnetic field due to the tip effect. The produced nanomaterial exhibits sensitive trace detection of the pesticide residue by means of the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique, in which the limit of detection (LOD) of rhodamine 6G is 10–13 M and the LOD of tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD) is 10–9 M. Furthermore, it also shows a particularly high reaction rate for the six-electron reduction of p-nitrothiophenol to p-aminothiophenol on AgAu HHNPs. The entire reaction processes have been in situ monitored by SERS, revealing that molecular hydrogen in situ generated on the semiconductor AgCl dominates the plasmonic photocatalysis. The detailed understanding gained herein will help to disentangle the rational design mechanism of complex hollow nanostructures, as well as the relationship between structural configuration and resulting performance in SERS detection and plasmonic photocatalysis.

Abstract:Introducing metallic nanoparticles, such as Au, on the substrate as a surfactant or wetting inducer has been demonstrated as a simple but effective way to facilitate the formation of ultra-thin silver layers (UTSLs) during the following Ag deposition. However, most research paid much attention to the applications of UTSLs assisted by metallic surfactants but neglected the underlying mechanisms of how the metallic surfactant affects the formation of UTSL. Here, we apply in situ grazing-incidence wide-/small-angle X-ray scattering to reveal the effects of the Au surfactant or seed layer (pre-deposited Au nanoparticles) on the formation of UTSL by high-power impulse magnetron sputter deposition (HiPIMS) on a zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film. According to the comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the in situ X-ray scattering data, we observe that the pre-deposited Au nanoparticles can act as additional defects or growth cores for the sputtered Ag atoms despite using HiPIMS, which itself already forms many nucleation sites. As a result, the formation of a continuous and smooth UTSL is reached earlier in HiPIMS as compared with bare ZnO thin films. Based on the mechanism revealed by the in situ measurements, we provide insight into the formation of UTSL and further UTSL-based applications.

Abstract:Plasmonic noble-metal nanoparticles with broadly tunable optical properties and catalytically active surfaces offer a unique opportunity for photochemistry. Resonant optical excitation of surface-plasmon generates high-energy hot carriers, which can participate in photochemical reactions. Although the surface-plasmon-driven catalysis on molecules has been extensively studied, surface-plasmon-mediated synthesis of bimetallic nanomaterials is less reported. Herein, we perform a detailed investigation on the formation mechanism and colloidal stability of monodisperse Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles synthesized through irradiating the intermixture of Au nanochains and AgNO3 solution with a nanosecond pulsed laser. It is revealed that the Ag atoms can be extracted from AgNO3 solution by surface-plasmon-generated hot electrons and alloy with Au atoms. Particularly, the obtained Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles without any surfactants or ligands exhibit superior stability that is confirmed by experiments as well as DLVO- based theoretical simulation. Our work would provide novel insights into the synthesis of potentially useful bimetallic nanoparticles via surface-plasmon-medicated alloying.
The Impact of Surface Chemistry on the Interfacial Evaporation-Driven Self-Assembly of Thermoplasmonic Gold Nanoparticles.

Abstract:This paper reports an interfacial evaporation-driven approach for self-assembly of a gold nanoparticle (AuNP) film at the interface of liquid/air. We have designed colloidal plasmonic AuNPs capped with different types and surface coverage densities of ligands (i.e. purified and unpurified oleylamine-capped or thiol-protected AuNPs) and studied the impact of surface chemistry on the self-assembly of AuNPs using the optically excited plasmonic heating effect. By employing the extended DerjaguinLandau-Verwey-Overbeek model, the calculated lowest potential energies of the assembled AuNPs capped with purified oleylamine or alkyl thiols are between -1 kBT and -2 kBT, which is close to the room temperature thermal energy and represents a meta-stable assembly, indicating the reversible self-assembly of the AuNP film observed from the experiment. Furthermore, we observed the superheating phenomenon in well-dispersed nanoparticle solution while normal boiling occurred in the solutions with AuNP assemblies. The SERS activity of the as-prepared AuNP film has also been studied using rhodamine 6G as a molecular probe. This work not only provides a new aspect of the boiling phenomena of optically heated colloidal plasmonic nanoparticle solutions, but also provides inspiration for a new approach in designing surface ligands on the nanoparticles to realize reversible self-assembly via interfacial evaporation.
Dry Sintering Meets Wet Silver‐Ion “soldering”: Charge‐Transfer Plasmon Engineering of Solution‐Assembled Gold Nanodimers from Visible to Near‐Infrared I and II Regions

Abstract:Achieving highly tunable and localized surface plasmon resonance up to near infrared (NIR) regions is a key target in nanoplasmonics. In particular, a self-assembly process capable of producing highly uniform and solution-processable nanomaterials with tailor-made plasmonic properties is lacking. We herein address this problem through a conjunctive use of wet Ag+ soldering and dry thermal sintering to produce nanodimer-derived structures with precisely engineered charge-transfer plasmon (CTP). The sintered dimers are water soluble, featuring gradually shifted CTP spanning an 800 nm wavelength range (up to NIR II). Upon silica removal, the products are grafted by DNA to offer surface functionality. This process is also adaptable to DNA-linked AuNP dimers toward plasmonic meta-materials via DNA-guided soldering and sintering.
Revolutionlizing Plasmonic Platform via Magnetic Field-Assisted Confined Ultrafast Laser Deposition of High-Density, Uniform, and Ultrafine Nanoparticle Arrays

Abstract:The remarkable capabilities of 2D plasmonic surfaces in controlling optical waves have garnered significant attention. However, the challenge of large-scale manufacturing of uniform, well-aligned, and tunable plasmonic surfaces has hindered their industrialization. To address this, we present a groundbreaking tunable plasmonic platform design achieved through magnetic field (MF) assisted ultrafast laser direct deposition (MAPLD) in air. Through precise control of metal nanoparticles (NPs), with Cobalt (Co) serving as the model material, employing a magnetic field (MF), and fine-tuning ultrafast laser parameters, we have effectively converted coarse and non-uniform NPs into densely packed, uniform, and ultrafine NPs(~3nm). This revolutionary advancement results in the creation of customizable plasmonic 'hot spots,' which play a pivotal role in Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors. The profound impact of this designable plasmonic platform lies in its close association with plasmonic resonance and energy enhancement. When the plasmonic nanostructures resonate with incident light, they generate intense local electromagnetic fields, thus vastly increasing the Raman scattering signal. This enhancement leads to an outstanding 2 to 18-fold boost in SERS performance and unparalleled sensing sensitivity down to 10-10 M. Notably, the plasmonic platform also demonstrates robustness, retaining its sensing capability even after undergoing 50 cycles of rinsing and re-loading of chemicals. Moreover, this work adheres to green manufacturing standards, making it an efficient and environmentally friendly method for customizing plasmonic 'hot spots' in SERS devices. Our study not only achieves the formation of high-density, uniform, and ultrafine nanoparticle arrays on a tunable plasmonic platform but also showcases the profound relation between plasmonic resonance and energy enhancement. The outstanding results observed in SERS sensors further emphasize the immense potential of this technology for energy-related applications, including photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and clean water, propelling us closer to a sustainable and cleaner future.

Abstract:Chemical processes driven by nonthermal energy (e.g., visible light) are attractive for future approaches to energy conversion, synthesis, photocatalysis, and so forth. The growth of anisotropic metal nanostructures mediated by excitation of a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a prototype example of such a reaction. Important aspects, notably the growth mechanism and a possible role of plasmonic "hot spots" within the metal nanostructures, remain poorly understood. Here, we use in situ electron microscopy to stimulate and image the plasmon-mediated growth of triangular Ag nanoprisms in solution. The quantification of the time-dependent evolution of the lateral size and thickness of the nanoprisms, enabled by nanometer-scale real-time microscopy in solution, shows a transition from an early stage of uniform Ag0 incorporation exclusively in the prism side facets to a size regime with accelerated growth in thickness. Differences in attachment rate at this advanced stage correlate with local plasmonic field enhancements, which allows determining the range over which charge carriers transferred from plasmonic hot spots can drive chemistry. Such data support the development of nonthermal chemical processes that depend on plasmonic light harvesting and the transfer of nonequilibrium charge carriers.

Abstract:ConspectusSelf-assembly represents probably the most flexible way to construct metastructured materials and devices from a wealth of colloidal building blocks with synthetically controllable sizes, shapes, and elemental compositions. In principle, surface capping is unavoidable during the synthesis of nanomaterials with well-defined geometry and stability. The ligand layer also endows inorganic building blocks with molecular recognition ability responsible for their assembly into desired structures. In the case of plasmonic nanounits, precise positioning of them in a nanomolecule or an ordered nanoarray provides a chance to shape their electrodynamic behaviors and thereby assists experimental demonstration of modern nanoplasmonics toward practical uses. Despite previous achievements in bottom-up nanofabrication, a big challenge exists toward strong coupling and facile charge transfer between adjacent nanounits in an assembly. This difficulty has impeded a functional development of plasmonic nanoassemblies. The weakened interparticle coupling originates from the electrostatic and steric barriers of ionic/molecular adsorbates to guarantee a good colloidal stability. Such a dilemma is rooted in fundamental colloidal science, which lacks an effective solution.During the past several years, a chemical tool termed Ag ion soldering (AIS) has been developed to overcome the above situation toward functional colloidal nanotechnology. In particular, a dimeric assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles has been taken as an ideal model to study plasmonic coupling and interparticle charge transfer. This Account starts with a demonstration of the chemical mechanism of AIS, followed by a verification of its workability in various self-assembly systems. A further use of AIS to realize postsynthetic coupling of DNA-directed nanoparticle clusters evidences its compatibility with DNA nanotechnology. Benefiting from the sub-nanometer interparticle gap achieved by AIS, a conductive pathway is established between two nanoparticles in an assembly. Accordingly, light-driven charge transfer between the conductively bridged plasmonic units is realized with highly tunable resonance frequencies. These situations have been demonstrated by thermal/photothermal sintering of silica-isolated nanoparticle dimers as well as gap-specific electroless gold/silver deposition. The regioselective silver deposition is then combined with galvanic replacement to obtain catalytically active nanofoci (plasmonic nanogaps). The resulting structures are useful for real time and on-site Raman spectroscopic tracking of chemical reactions in the plasmonic hotspots (nanogaps) as well as for study of plasmon-mediated/field-enhanced catalysis. The Account is concluded by a deeper insight into the chemical mechanism of AIS and its adaption to conformation-rich structures. Finally, AIS-enabled functional pursuits are suggested for self-assembled materials with strongly coupled and easily reshapable physicochemical properties.
Nanoscale control of molecular self-assembly induced by plasmonic hot-electron dynamics

Abstract:Self-assembly processes allow us to design and create complex nanostructures using molecules as building blocks and surfaces as scaffolds. This autonomous driven construction is possible due to a complex thermodynamic balance of molecule-surface interactions. As such, nanoscale guidance and control over this process is hard to achieve. Here we use the highly localized light-to-chemical-energy conversion of plasmonic materials to spatially cleave Au-S bonds on pre-determined locations within a single nanoparticle, enabling unprecedented control over this archetypal system for molecular self-assembly. Our method offers nanoscale precision and high-throughput light-induced tailoring of the surface chemistry of individual and packed nano-sized metallic structures by simply varying wavelength and polarization of the incident light. Assisted by single-molecule super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, we image, quantify and shed light onto the plasmon-induced desorption mechanism. We show that plasmon-induced photo-desorption enables sub-diffraction multiplexing, selective positioning of nanomaterials and even sorting and purification of colloidal nanoparticles.

Plasmonic Effect of Ag/Au Composite Structures on the Material Transition

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures can produce the surface plasmon resonance under appropriate photoexcitation, which can be used to promote or facilitate chemical reactions, as well as photocatalytic materials, due to their strong plasmon resonance in the visible light region. In the current work, Ag/Au nanoislands (NIs) and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were designed, and their thermocatalysis performance was investigated using luminescence of Eu3+ as a probe. Compared with Ag NIs, the catalytic efficiency and stability of surface plasmons of Ag/Au NIs and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were greatly improved. It was found that the metal NIs can also generate strong localized heat at low temperature environment, enabling the transition of NaYF4:Eu3+ to Y2O3: Eu3+, and anti-oxidation was realized by depositing gold on the surface of silver, resulting in the relative stability of the constructed complex.

Abstract:Decorating plasmonic Au nanoparticles on TiO 2 nanotube arrays with high specific surface area is an efficient strategy for constructing high-performance surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. Direct deposition of a Au thin film on a TiO 2 support, followed by dewetting at elevated temperatures, is economical for scale-up production of Au nanoparticles. The thermal diffusion behavior of Au on a high-curvature surface, however, makes it difficult to meet an optimized distribution of Au nanoparticles that is required for forming electromagnetic SERS hotspot regions. Herein, we proposed a layer-by-layer deposition method to prepare Au-decorated TiO 2 nanotube arrays using ZnO nanowires as structural templates. Au nanoparticles could be loaded on either the interior or exterior of the TiO 2 nanotubes or buried in the walls simply by switching the sequence of magnetron sputtering of Au and atomic layer deposition of TiO 2 . We revealed that regulating the thermal diffusion of the Au thin film in the confined ZnO/TiO 2 interlayer favors an optimal distribution of the dewetted Au nanoparticles at the interstices. By virtue of the size and interspace of the Au nanoparticles balancing each other, Au–TiO 2 featuring Au nanoparticles dispersed on the inner walls of TiO 2 nanotubes provided abundant localized electromagnetic field hot spots with a small amount of Au consumption. This Au–TiO 2 substrate presented high SERS activity, e.g. a detection limit of 10 −9 M for the R6G molecule. This substrate could also achieve self-cleaning through photocatalytic degradation of adsorbed organic analytes, which is required for repeated SERS sensing.

Abstract:This study reports the controllable surface roughening of Au–Ag alloy nanoplates via the galvanic replacement reaction between single-crystalline triangular Ag nanoplates and HAuCl4 in an aqueous medium. With a combination of experimental evidence and finite element method (FEM) simulations, improved electromagnetic field (E-field) enhancement around the surface-roughened Au–Ag nanoplates and tunable light absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region (~800–1,400 nm) are achieved by the synergistic effects of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from the maintained triangular shape, the controllable Au–Ag alloy composition, and the increased surface roughness. The NIR light extinction enables an active photothermal effect as well as a high photothermal conversion efficiency (78.5%). The well-maintained triangular shape, surface-roughened evolutions of both micro- and nanostructures, and tunable NIR surface plasmon resonance effect enable potential applications of the Au–Ag alloy nanoplates in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic detection of biomolecules through 785-nm laser excitation.

Abstract:Formation of plasmonic structure in closely packed assemblies of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) is essential for various applications in sensing, renewable energy, authentication, catalysis, and metamaterials. Herein, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate is fabricated for trace detection with ultrahigh sensitivity and stability. The SERS substrate is constructed from a simple yet robust strategy through in situ growth patterned assemblies of Au NPs based on a polymer brush templated synthesis strategy. Benefiting from the dense and uniform distribution of Au NPs, the resulting Au plasmonic nanostructure demonstrates a very strong SERS effect, while the outer polymer brush could restrict the excessive growth of Au NPs and the patterned design could achieve uniform distribution of Au NPs. As results, an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 10−15 M, which has never been successfully detected in other work, is determined for 4-acetamidothiophenol (4-AMTP) molecules and the Raman signals in the random region show good signal homogeneity with a low relative standard deviation (RSD) of 7.2%, indicating great sensitivity and reliability as a SERS substrate. The LOD values of such Au plasmonic nanostructures for methylene blue, thiram, and R6G molecules can also reach as low as 10−10 M, further indicating that the substrate has a wide range of applicability for SERS detection. With the help of finite difference time domain simulations (FDTD) calculation, the electric field distribution of the Au plasmonic nanostructures is simulated, which quantitatively matches the experimental observations. Moreover, the Au plasmonic nanostructures show good shelf stability for at least 10 months of storage in an ambient environment, indicating potentials for practical applications.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) devices based on resonant metallic metasurfaces have shown disruptive potential for many applications including biosensing and photocatalysis. Despite significant progress, highly performing Au plasmonic nanotextures often suffer of suboptimal electric field enhancement, due to damping effects in multicrystalline domains. Fabricating well‐defined Au nanocrystals over large surfaces is very challenging, and usually requires time‐intensive multi‐step processes. Here, presented are first insights on the large‐scale self‐assembly of monocrystalline Au nano‐islands with tunable size and separation, and their application as efficient LSPR surfaces. Highly homogeneous centimeter‐sized Au metasurfaces are fabricated by one‐step deposition and in situ coalescence of hot nanoparticle aerosols into a discontinuous monolayer of highly faceted monocrystals. First insights on the mechanisms driving the high‐temperature synthesis of these highly faceted Au nanotextures are obtained by molecular dynamic and detailed experimental investigation of their growth kinetics. Notably, these metasurfaces demonstrat high‐quality and tunable LSPR, enabling the fabrication of highly performing optical gas molecule sensors detecting down to 3 × 10−6 variations in refractive index at room temperature. It is believed that these findings provide a rapid, low‐cost nanofabrication tool for the engineering of highly homogenous Au metasurfaces for large‐scale LSPR devices with application ranging from ultrasensitive optical gas sensors to photocatalytic macroreactors.
In Situ Observation of Structural and Optical Changes of Phase-Separated Ag-Cu Nanoparticles during a Dewetting Process via Transmission Electron Microscopy

Abstract:Metallic nanoparticles with localized surface plasmon resonance have suitable optical properties for various applications such as optical filters, efficient photocatalysts, and high-sensitivity sensors. Phase-separated plasmonic nanoparticles with heterogeneous metastructures exhibit unique resonance features with separate optical field enhancements in each phase and hot electron transfer across the interface. Hence, interface engineering is crucial, particularly for catalyst applications. In this study, we investigated the evolution of the interface at high temperatures during nanoparticle formation using the dewetting method. We selected a Ag-Cu binary alloy system as a representative case and observed the nanoparticles via in situ transmission electron microscopy using a dedicated specimen heating holder. In situ elemental mapping revealed that the initial as-deposited film, which was composed of core-shell structures with Ag cores and Cu shells, converted into phase-separated Janus nanoparticles through marbled structures. A major structural change was observed at approximately 200 °C, which was in agreement with optical measurements. These results confirmed that the optical properties and metastructures of the phase-separated nanoparticles could be tuned by selecting the appropriate temperature and duration of the heat treatment.
