Additionally, we aim to identify demographic factors associated with elevated mental health literacy scores. Methods: A cross-sectional study using a phone interview survey with quota sampling was conducted for equal distribution of sexes, age and administrative regions. Mental health literacy was assessed by the previously validated mental health literacy scale (MHLS). The MHLS ranges from 35 to 160, and a higher score indicates greater level of mental health literacy. Results: In this study, 4,547 (70.2%) agreed to complete the interview. The sample was equally distributed across Saudi Arabia's 13 administrative regions with 50.1% female and mean age 35.9 (SD: ± 12.8). In terms of education, 55.1% have a bachelor's degree or above. The nationally weighted score on the original MHLS was 110.75. the MHLS Saudi validation score was influenced by various variables including: marital status, healthcare-related job, sex, education level, and proximity to individuals with mental health issues. Conclusion: The study offers data for the first time on Saudi Arabian mental health literacy status. The high MHLS score reflects good societal awareness and understanding of mental health related concepts and issues in the Saudi population. The results of this study set the baseline for mental health literacy in Saudi Arabia. Future research may focus on utilizing the validated MHLS and the method used in this study to explore the effect of other social and individual factors on mental health literacy. It offers a baseline from which to evaluate the present mental health landscape, that is pertinent for policy-making and mental health planning. 5 It identifies misconceptions about mental health and informs targeted interventions to correct these misconceptions. 1,6 Additionally, better MHL could help with early detection and intervention to reduce the prevalence of mental health problems in the public. 1,4,7 Condition-specific tools for measuring MHL typically measure knowledge and attitudes towards a specific mental health disorder such as depression or anxiety. 8 These tools provide detailed insights into the understanding of specific conditions. e-Health literacy and online health information utilization among Jordanians: A population-based study

Abstract:Background: The internet has become an essential part of empowering people to access health-related information. Huge amounts of health-related information are available online, but few people have the skills to assess its validity and reliability. Accordingly, the concept of ehealth literacy competencies emerged to measure the skills necessary to validate such information. As a result, the purpose of this study was to assess Jordanian people's e-health literacy, online health information utilization, and associated factors. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to December 2023. Results: Results: The study found that participants rated their e-health literacy at 28.94 out of 40, indicating a sufficient level of health literacy, and their online health information utilization at 39.62, indicating a high level of engagement with online health resources. Furthermore, it is revealed that e-health literacy is associated with gender and geographic region, whereas online health information utilization is associated only with chronic disease. Conclusion: In Jordan, there is a balance between traditional and online health information use. While healthcare providers and primary health centers are the main sources of information, Jordanians show a sufficient level of e-health literacy, with females and the capital region exhibiting higher levels. Furthermore, Jordanians were more likely to use online health information. Nevertheless, it is crucial to work on improving internet platforms to enhance the quality of online health-related information.

Abstract:Mental health problems significantly affect students' university education. However, studies about mental health literacy (MHL) among Saudi university students are very limited. The two-fold objective of this study was to validate an Arabic version of the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) and assess the MHL of university students. The study participants involved 339 female students. Psychometric evaluation of the MHLS–Arabic version was conducted, and correlation and regression analyses were performed. The scale was successfully cross culturally adapted and found to be valid and reliable. The highest MHL indicator was the students' perception of confidence in using a computer or telephone to inquire about mental illness data. Conversely, the lowest MHL indicator was the student's disagreement with the notion that mental infirmity is not an actual medical challenge. Marital status, college attended, and academic level were found to have statistically significant effects on the MHL of university students. The Arabic version of the MHLS validly and reliably assessed MHL. This work adds to existing evidence for assessing MHL and can help administrators formulate better strategies to improve the MHL of university students.

Abstract:Nurses with a high level of digital health literacy (DHL) play a key role in providing high-quality patient care and promoting self-care activities. This study assessed DHL among nurses in Jordanian hospitals. A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used. Data were collected targeting 238 nurses conveniently from both public and private hospitals. A standard pre-designed tool was used to collect DHL data composed of 21 questions divided into seven subscales, each one having three items. These subscales are operational skills, navigation skills, information searching, evaluating reliability, determining relevance, adding self-generated health content, and protecting privacy. Participants mostly achieved very desirable results in operational skills, information searching, and navigational skills, with a percentage of total scores of 82.5%, 90.6%, and 81.7%, respectively. None of the demographics were significantly different from the total DHL score (p>0.05). This study provides essential insight into healthcare professionals’ DHL in Jordanian hospitals and their approach to seeking health information, determining relevancy and content, and maintaining privacy during the search for required information. Healthcare providers, including nurses, were at the frontlines in managing patients’ information effectively. These results indicate that a program to promote DHL level and skills in healthcare providers would be useful. Policymakers, health educators and public health practitioners engaged in health literacy programs might use the results of this study for informed decision-making, as well as to improve and enhance DHL levels.

Abstract:International Journal of Social Psychiatry, Ahead of Print. Background:Mental health literacy (MHL) has been related to health behaviors and outcomes. However, studies examining MHL as a barrier and facilitator to service use are limited, especially among minority groups.Aims:This study examined MHL as a barrier and facilitator to mental health service use among the Palestinian Bedouin minority in Israel.Methods:Twenty-five Bedouins (15 women) from southern Israel participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The participants were recruited by publishing an ad on social media about the study, then through a snowball technique. The data were analyzed thematically using ATLAS.ti.9, and the intercoder reliability was 92%.Results:We identified four major themes in the interviews: (1) MHL as a barrier to service use, due to lack of knowledge about professionals in the field, mental health services, or reasons and risk factors for mental health problems; (2) traditional attitudes that acted as barriers to service use, including a preference for informal treatment, a lack of faith in mental health treatment, aversion to discussing private feelings, and the perception that mental health is a luxury; (3) MHL as a facilitator to service use by enabling accurate identification of mental distress and suggesting practical avenues for seeking help; and (4) ways to improve MHL that should be culturally sensitive and under the government agencies' responsibility.Conclusions:Interventions aimed at increasing the use of mental health services among Bedouins and reducing racial/ethnic disparities should increase knowledge in culturally adapted ways, especially regarding professionals and services, and change negative attitudes such as mental health treatment as ineffective or bonus.

Abstract:Introduction Mental Health Literacy (MHL) is important for improving mental health and reducing inequities in treatment. The Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) is a valid and reliable assessment tool for MHL. This systematic review will examine and compare the measurement properties of the MHLS in different languages, enabling academics, clinicians and policymakers to make informed judgements regarding its use in assessments. Methods and analysis The review will adhere to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology for systematic reviews of patient-reported outcome measures and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Manual for Evidence Synthesis and will be presented following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis 2020 checklist. The review will be conducted in four stages, including an initial search confined to PubMed, a search of electronic scientific databases PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, MEDLINE, Embase (Elsevier), PubMed (NLM) and ERIC, an examination of the reference lists of all papers to locate relevant publications and finally contacting the MHLS original author to identify validation studies that the searches will not retrieve. These phases will assist us in locating studies that evaluate the measurement properties of MHLS across various populations, demographics and contexts. The search will focus on articles published in English between May 2015 and December 2023. The methodological quality of the studies will be evaluated using the COSMIN Risk of Bias checklist, and a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative data synthesis will be performed. Ethics and dissemination Ethics approval is not required. The publication will be in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Abstract:(1) Background: Amidst the global rise in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), effective management of the disease has become increasingly important. Health literacy, particularly in non-English speaking populations, plays a crucial role in this management. To address the lack of suitable tools for Arabic-speaking diabetic patients, this study developed and validated the Jordanian Diabetic Health Literacy Questionnaire (JDHLQ). (2) Methods: A sample of 400 diabetic patients from Jordan, with a balance in gender, age, and educational background, was recruited from an endocrinology outpatient clinic. The JDHLQ, consisting of informative and communicative sections, underwent rigorous validation. Utilizing principal component analysis and Rasch analysis, the JDHL's reliability and validity were evaluated. (3) Results: The results showed moderate proficiency in understanding and communicating diabetes-related information and confirmed the reliability and validity of the JDHLQ. (4) Conclusions: These findings emphasize the importance of culturally appropriate health literacy tools in enhancing patient understanding, engagement, and overall management of T2DM in Arabic-speaking communities.

Abstract:Abstract Background: The risk rate for the incidence of any mental disorder is 50%, and the prevalence of mental disorders is increasing. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric of the Iranian Version of Mental Health Literacy Scale(MHLS).Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with a multi-stage sampling method with the participation of 1363 individuals in the general population. The formal, content and construct validity were used for validation of MHLS. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used for the reliability of MHLS. Confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) was performed using AMOS software Version 24.Results: After performing the CFA, the final version of the MHLS included a total of 29 items, which consisted knowledge of where to seek information (4 item), Ability to recognize disorders (8 item), knowledge of self-treatment (2 item), knowledge of risk factors and causes (2 item), Attitudes that promote recognition or appropriate help-seeking behavior (10 item), and knowledge of professional help available (3 item). In the CFA test, the six items were deleted.Conclusion: Due to the lack of appropriate tools for measuring health literacy in the Iranian population, the 29-item MHLS with six subscales is a valid and reliable tool for measuring mental health literacy in the population.
Assessing the mental health literacy of young adults from rural and urban communities in Malawi

Abstract:Mental health literacy is the ability to recognise mental disorders, have knowledge of professional help available, effective self-help strategies, prevention strategies, and skills to support others. Mental health literacy is linked to better help-seeking behaviours and the management of mental illness. The prevalence of mental illness in Malawi is increasing. Assessing mental health literacy in communities crucially helps identify knowledge gaps, informing the development of evidence-based interventions. This study assessed the mental health literacy levels of young adults (16-to-30 years old) in rural and urban communities in Malawi. A cross-sectional national survey was administered to 682 people across 13 districts in Malawi using a self-reporting Mental Health Literacy questionnaire (MHLq) that assessed knowledge of mental health problems, erroneous beliefs/stereotypes, first-aid skills, help-seeking behaviour, and self-help strategies. Most respondents were either unemployed (36%) or enrolled in school (43%). 73% had completed primary or secondary education, 48% knew someone with a mental illness but only 14.1% of this group could specify the illness. The mean mental health literacy score was 111.8 [Standard Deviation (SD) = 13.9]. Individuals with primary and secondary school qualifications had significantly lower scores in Factor 2 (erroneous beliefs/stereotypes) and Factor 3 (First-aid skills and assistance-seeking behaviour) of the MHLq than those with higher education. This research highlights persisting mental health misconceptions, limited knowledge about specific mental illnesses, and low help-seeking behaviour among young adult Malawians. Higher education is linked to a better understanding of mental health. Prioritising community education on causes, signs, treatments, and prognosis of mental illness is crucial for increased mental health literacy.
Measurement properties of the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS): A systematic review

Abstract:Background: Since its creation, the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) has been used worldwide in mental health literacy studies. Objective: This study aimed to systematically evaluate, summarize, and compare the measurement properties of MHLS validation studies. Methods: PsycINFO, CINAHL, ERIC, Scopus, Embase, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases were searched from May 30, 2015, to December 31, 2023. Peer-reviewed studies validating the MHLS and its measurement properties were included, irrespective of language, study population, and setting. Studies using the MHLS as an outcome measure, as a comparative instrument to validate another instrument, or using other MHL measures and grey literature was excluded. Results: Of the 685 search results, 16 studies were deemed eligible. The COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) RoB criteria showed 15/15 studies exhibited 'Very Good' or 'Adequate' internal consistency, 3/6 reliability, 1/8 content validity, 14/14 structural validity, 6/7 hypothesis testing for convergent validity, 2/7 hypothesis testing for known-group validity, and 0/1 error measurement. The Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.720 to 0.890, and the Intra-class Correlation Coefficient ranged from 0.741 to 0.99, while content validity was limited regarding the quality of evidence rating. The four-factor and unidimensional structures were 35.7 % and 28.6 %, respectively, the most common models. Conclusion: The MHLS exhibited strong evidence of construct validity and reliability, ensuring consistent and accurate evaluation of MHL and improving research credibility and generalizability. However, the low number of identical language versions of MHLS studies prohibited statistical pooling and quantitative summaries.

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to assess mental health literacy (MHL) in the general population using six case vignettes related to depression, mania, psychosis, conversion disorder (CD), obsessive compulsion disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Design/methodology/approach Each vignette had nine items related to MHL. The sample comprised 4,590 young adults conveniently selected from twin cities in Pakistan. Participants' responses were converted into percentages and percentiles to find MHL levels. Findings The men had moderate MHL in depression and inadequate MHL in the remaining five illnesses. The women had adequate MHL in depression and moderate MHL in mania, psychosis, OCD and PTSD while inadequate in CD. Comparing item-wise understanding, the participants had an adequate understanding of identifying the illness, who could suffer and whether the illness was treatable. However, they struggled with naming the illness, knowing about it and how to treat and identify the person who can treat it. Research limitations/implications The findings of this study are helpful for mental health professionals, policymakers and individuals who identify the target areas for engagement and improving MHL in the general population. Originality/value This study provides data about MHL related to six mental illnesses, unlike previous studies focusing on a few illnesses. This study recommends awareness sessions, community workshops and engaging social and electronic media for improving MHL and seeking help from relevant health professionals for mental illnesses instead of spiritual healers and witchcraft.

Abstract:Abstract Background The risk rate for the lifetime prevalence of any mental disorder is calculated as 50%, and the prevalence of mental disorders has an increasing trend. So, this study aimed to evaluate the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) among Iranian people. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted with a multi-stage sampling method with 1273 people in the general population. After searching and reviewing various sources, the research team decided to use the questionnaire of MHLS with 35 items and six attributes that were measured and developed by O’Connor et al. The face, content, and construct validity (Confirmatory factor analysis) were used for validation of MHLS. McDonald’s omega coefficient and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were used to calculate the reliability of MHLS. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed using AMOS software Version 24. Results In the CFA test, the six items were deleted. The final modified version of the MHLS included a total of 29 items with six attributes consisted of (a) knowledge of where to seek information (4 items), (b) ability to recognize disorders (8 items), (c) knowledge of self-treatment (2 items), (d) knowledge of risk factors and causes (2 items), (e) attitudes that promote recognition or appropriate help-seeking behavior (10 items), and (f) knowledge of professional help available (3 items). Based on the results of reliability, McDonald’s omega coefficient and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for all attributes of MHLS were 0.797 and 0.789, respectively. Conclusion Due to the lack of appropriate instruments for measuring mental health literacy in the Iranian population, the modified version of MHLS with 29 items and six attributes can be considered as a valid and reliable instrument for this purpose.

Mental health literacy among Arab men living in high-income Western countries: A systematic review and narrative synthesis

Abstract:While interest in mental health literacy (MHL) is growing rapidly, cross-cultural research focusing on MHL is developing more slowly. This inaugural systematic review explored the recognition and beliefs about the causes of mental health disorders amongst Arab men living in high income Western countries (HIWC), their help-seeking beliefs, behaviors, and sources of help, as well as barriers and facilitators to help-seeking. Six electronic database searches were conducted using Medline, Embase, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science. These searches yielded a total of 9,460 citations. After applying inclusion criteria through both database and manual hand searches, 46 studies were identified. The findings corresponded with four of the socioecological model's five factors: intrapersonal, interpersonal, societal, and institutional. Intrapersonal factors included attributing mental health illness to life and migration stressors, and religious reasons. Interpersonal and societal factors included men favoring informal help-seeking sources as stigma was a barrier to formal help-seeking. Institutional factors around the perceived cultural competence of healthcare professionals and access difficulties were obstacles to seeking formal help. The growth in Arab migration to HIWC highlights the need for culturally tailored care. Research is needed to understand the perspectives of healthcare providers working with Arab men in addition to how men's stigmatizing attitudes are an obstacle to formal help-seeking. Interventions should be designed to address the unique mental health needs of Arab men, recognizing that some explanatory beliefs may not align with current Western models of mental health. Adolescent Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire: Investigating Psychometric Properties in Iranian Female Students

Abstract:Objectives. Mental Health Literacy (MHL) is an important factor in promoting mental health. Assessing this structure is required for early recognition and intervention in mental health problems. To date, there was no tool to assess it among Iranian adolescents, so this study was aimed at examining the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Adolescent Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire (AMHLQ) among Iranian female students. Method. The study instrument was a Persian version of the AMHLQ prepared through a translation and back-translation process. In this cross-sectional study, 275 female students completed the AMHLQ, and the Adolescent Strengths, and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results. Findings of content, construct validity tests, Cronbach's alpha, and split-half coefficient demonstrated that the AMHLQ had satisfactory validity and suitable reliability. The exploratory factor analysis showed four dimensions of the AMHLQ: (1) knowledge of mental health problems ( α = 0.89 ); (2) erroneous beliefs/stereotypes ( α = 0.89 ); (3) help-seeking and first aid skills ( α = 0.86 ); and (4) self-help strategies ( α = 0.74 ). Conclusion. The findings showed that the tool was confirmed by questions and subscales, and this questionnaire was a valid and reliable tool in assessing level differences of MHL and in determining the impact of programs designed to improve MHL in Iranian female adolescents.

Abstract:Although Mental Health Literacy (MHL) has been a topic of substantial interest, measurement of this concept using a scale-based measure has been limited, including a lack of psychometric and methodologically robust scale-based measures of MHL. This study developed a new scale-based measure of MHL, the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS), which assesses all attributes of MHL. Construction of the MHLS was done over three key stages, including measure development, pilot testing and assessment of psychometrics and methodological quality. The resulting measure is a 35 item, univariate scale that is easily administered and scored. Results showed significant differences in scores between mental health professionals and a community sample, as well as individuals with greater experience with mental health, and a significant positive relationship with help-seeking intentions. The MHLS also demonstrated good internal and test-retest reliability. Evaluation of the methodological quality of the MHLS indicated that it has substantial methodological advantages in comparison to existing scale-based measures of MHL. The MHLS can be used in assessing individual and population level differences in MHL and in determining the impact of programmes designed to improve MHL.

Abstract:Background: Mental health literacy (MHL) promises to be an important factor for public health by enabling people to take responsibility for their own mental health. To date, there is no measurement tool that allows the assessment of a comprehensive understanding of MHL as part of health literacy (HL). Nonetheless, the widely used Health Literacy Survey European Questionnaire 47 (HLS-EU-Q47) includes items assessing at least some MHL-aspects in the context of HL. The present study aimed at investigating how these MHL-aspects are related to HL, health behavior and health outcome and how they differ between sociodemographic groups. Methods: Data from the Health Literacy Survey Zurich 2018, collected by an adapted version of the HLS-EU-Q47, served to investigate these relationships. Results: MHL-aspects were related to HL, health behavior and health outcome. Nearly half of all respondents (45%; N = 904) showed low MHL levels, particularly those with higher age and higher financial deprivation. Conclusions: Relations of MHL-aspects with HL, health behavior, and health outcome indicate their potential importance for future interventions in public health, addressing mental health and MHL. A specific MHL tool is needed to comprehensively investigate these relations, which could be developed by extending the present measurement approach.

Level and predictors of mental health literacy of depression and suicide among undergraduate medical students

Abstract:Abstract Background Poor mental health literacy (MHL) is considered a significant barrier to medical students seeking treatment for depression and suicide. This study aimed to assess the level of mental health literacy of depression and suicide among undergraduate medical students as well as to determine its predictors. An online survey was conducted on 361 undergraduate medical students through the Microsoft Team platform using a Google form application-structured questionnaire that included a sociodemographic section, the depression literacy scale (D-Lit), and the modified suicide literacy scale (LOSS). Results The mean D-Lit score was 7.9 ± 1.8 (total score ranged from 0 to 22), while the mean LOSS score was 4.5 ± 1.7 (total score ranged from 0 to 12). Only 36.8% of students had depression literacy levels higher than the mean depression score, whereas 28.8% had a suicide literacy level exceeding the mean suicide score. A statistically significant positive correlation was revealed between the mean score of depression literacy and that of suicide literacy ( r = 0.16, p -value = 0.002). Male gender ( p < 0.05), family history of depression ( p < 0.05), and history of suicidal ideations ( p < 0.01) are all predictors of higher depression literacy scores. Conclusions According to the results, there is compelling evidence that depression and suicide literacy among medical students was low. Therefore, rather than waiting until a medical student reaches the clinical years, mental health education should be introduced early in medical school curricula or even in high school.

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of psychosocial, emotional, and behavioral problems and their symptoms among children and adolescents in Jordan, assess their quality of life, and examine mental health help-seeking behavior. Methods: A large-scale school-based national survey was conducted in Jordan among children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years (grades 3 to 12) from the host and refugee populations, utilizing a multi-stage stratified cluster sampling technique to select a nationally representative sample. Two versions of structured questionnaires were used: proxy parent version for students in grades 3 to 6 (8–11 years) and self-report version for students in grades 7 to 12 (12–18 years). The study questionnaires employed internationally recognized and validated tools in English, which were translated into Arabic. Results: A total of 8,000 (3,433 (42.9%) boys, 4,567 (57.1%) girls) and (3,593 (44.9%) children, 4,407 (55.1%) adolescents) were included. About 24.5% of children had anxiety symptoms (18.0% of Jordanians, 34.5% of Syrian camp refugees, 33.7% of Syrian urban refugees, and 24.7% of Palestinian camp refugees) and 16.6% of children had major depressive disorder symptoms (11.0% of Jordanians, 25.4% of Syrian camp refugees, 25.0% of Syrian urban refugees, and 14.0% of Palestinian camp refugees). Almost 13.9% of children and 19.7% of adolescents had abnormal levels of total emotional and behavioral difficulties. Nearly 16.5% of children and 35.0% of adolescents had poor overall health-related quality of life. When experiencing a personal or emotional problem, only 28.1% of children's parents would seek help for their children and 19.7% of adolescents would seek help for themselves. Conclusion: The study revealed a high prevalence of various mental health issues' symptoms, particularly among refugees and female adolescents. Intention to seek help is relatively low, suggesting that children and adolescents' mental health needs are not being widely met. It is crucial to implement integrated and coordinated plans and programs that effectively target multiple factors that impact children and adolescents' mental health, while also respecting the prevailing cultural context. A key aspect of promoting the mental well-being of children and adolescents in Jordan is the inclusive involvement of refugees and individuals from other nationalities.
