Abstract:In the thesis at hand we give a comprehensive discussion of basic problems for generalized Maxwell equations with mixed boundary conditions using the calculus of alternating differential forms on Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension. We prove compactness results, Hodge decompositions and Poincare type estimates. For the case of 'full' boundary conditions we present trace and extension theorems, regularity theory as well as a detailed solution theory for static Maxwell problems.

Abstract:We prove that the time-harmonic solutions to Maxwell's equations in a three-dimensional exterior domain converge to a certain static solution as the frequency tends to zero. We work in weighted Sobolev spaces and construct new compactly supported replacements for Dirichlet--Neumann fields. Moreover, we even show convergence in operator norm.

On certain extremal Banach-Mazur distances in small dimensions

Abstract:We study the maximal possible Banach-Mazur distance for certain pairs of symmetric convex bodies. A classical consequence of the John Ellipsoid Theorem is that the Banach-Mazur distance of a symmetric convex body $K \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ to the $n$-dimensional Euclidean ball is not greater than $\sqrt{n}$. Equality holds in every dimension $n$ for the unit balls of $\ell_1^n$ and $\ell_{\infty}^n$, that is, for cross-polytopes and parallelotopes in dimension $n$. While it is known that in dimension $n \geq 4$, there are more convex bodies (not affinely equivalent to either of the previous two) with the distance $\sqrt{n}$ to the ball, and that for $n=2$ the parallelogram is unique, the characterization of the equality case for dimension $n=3$ seems to have never been published. We prove that the three-dimensional cross-polytopes and parallelotopes are the only symmetric convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the distance $\sqrt{3}$ to the Euclidean ball. Moreover, in the planar case we establish the stability of the uniqueness of the parallelogram with the best possible (linear) order of the estimate. We also consider the maximal possible Banach-Mazur distance between planar $1$-symmetric convex bodies. In this case, we prove that the maximal possible distance is $\sqrt{2}$ and characterize the equality case, which again involves a parallelogram.

Abstract:We prove a new general Poincaré-type inequality for differential forms on compact Riemannian manifolds with nonempty boundary. When the boundary is isometrically immersed in Euclidean space, we derive a new inequality involving mean and scalar curvatures of the boundary only and characterize its limiting case in codimension one. A new Ros-type inequality for differential forms is also derived assuming the existence of a nonzero parallel form on the manifold.

On the double critical Maxwell equations

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on (no)existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions for the double critical Maxwell equation involving with the Hardy, Hardy-Sobolev, Sobolev critical exponents. The existence and noexistence of solutions completely depend on the power exponents and coefficients of equation. On one hand, based on the concentration-compactness ideas, applying the Nehari manifold and the mountain pass theorem, we prove the existence of the ground state solutions for the critical Maxwell equation for three different scenarios. On the other hand, for the case $\lambda<0$ and $0\leq s_2<s_1<2$, which is a type open problem raised by Li and Lin. Draw support from a changed version of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality, we find that there exists a constant $\lambda^*$ which is a negative number having explicit expression, such that the problem has no nontrivial solution as the coefficient $\lambda<\lambda^*$. Moreover, there exists a constant $\lambda^*<\lambda^{**}<0$ such that, as $\lambda^{**}<\lambda<0$, the equation has a nontrivial solution using truncation methods. Furthermore, we establish the asymptotic behavior of solutions of equation as coefficient converges to zero for the all cases above.

Abstract:We revisit two papers which appeared in 1999: [1] M. Hoffmann-Ostenhof, T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof, and N. Nadirashvili. On the multiplicity of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on surfaces. Ann. Global Anal. Geom. 17 (1999) 43--48. [2] T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof, P. Michor, and N. Nadirashvili. Bounds on the multiplicity of eigenvalues for fixed membranes. Geom. Funct. Anal. 9 (1999) 1169--1188. The main result of these papers is that the multiplicity $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k(M))$ of the $k$th eigenvalue of the Riemannian surface $M$ is bounded from above by $(2k-3)$ provided that $k \ge 3$. In [1], $M$ is homeomorphic to a sphere. In [2], $M$ is a plane domain with Dirichlet boundary condition. In both cases, the starting label of eigenvalues is $1$. The proofs given in [1,2] are not very detailed, and often rely on figures or special configurations of nodal sets. The purpose of this monograph is to provide detailed general proofs for the above upper bounds and to extend the results to Robin boundary conditions. When $M$ is homeomorphic to a sphere, we provide a complete proof that $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k) \le (2k-3)$ for any $k\ge 3$, by introducing and carefully studying the combinatorial type and a labeling of the nodal domains of some particular eigenfunctions. When $M$ is a plane domain, we consider Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions and we also study the combinatorial types and a labeling of the nodal domains of some particular eigenfunctions. We prove the inequality $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k) \le (2k-2)$ for general $C^{\infty}$ bounded domains and all $k \ge 3$. We prove the inequality $\mathrm{mult}(\lambda_k) \le (2k-3)$ for $k \ge 3$ under the additional assumption that the domain is simply connected.

On the magnitude function of domains in Euclidean space

Abstract:We study Leinster's notion of magnitude for a compact metric space. For a smooth, compact domain $X\subset \mathbb{R}^{2m-1}$, we find geometric significance in the function $\mathcal{M}_X(R) = \mathrm{mag}(R\cdot X)$. The function $\mathcal{M}_X$ extends from the positive half-line to a meromorphic function in the complex plane. Its poles are generalized scattering resonances. In the semiclassical limit $R \to \infty$, $\mathcal{M}_X$ admits an asymptotic expansion. The three leading terms of $\mathcal{M}_X$ at $R=+\infty$ are proportional to the volume, surface area and integral of the mean curvature. In particular, for convex $X$ the leading terms are proportional to the intrinsic volumes, and we obtain an asymptotic variant of the convex magnitude conjecture by Leinster and Willerton, with corrected coefficients.

Abstract:We prove discrete versions of the first and second Weber inequalities on -like hybrid spaces spanned by polynomials attached to the faces and to the cells of a polyhedral mesh. The proven hybrid Weber inequalities are optimal in the sense that (i) they are formulated in terms of - and -like hybrid semi-norms designed so as to embed optimally (polynomially) consistent face penalty terms, and (ii) they are valid for face polynomials in the smallest possible stability-compatible spaces. Our results are valid on domains with general, possibly non-trivial topology. In a second part we also prove, within a general topological setting, related discrete Maxwell compactness properties.

Abstract:The main aim of this article is to prove quantitative spectral inequalities for the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions. More specifically, we prove sharp quantitative stability for the Faber-Krahn inequality in terms of Newtonian capacities and Hausdorff contents of positive codimension, thus providing an answer to a question posed by De Philippis and Brasco. One of our results asserts that for any bounded domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq3$, with Lebesgue measure equal to that of the unit ball $B_0$ and whose first eigenvalue is $\lambda_\Omega$, denoting by $\lambda_{B_0}$ the first eigenvalue for the unit ball, for any $a\in (0,1)$ it holds $$\lambda_\Omega - \lambda_{B_0} \geq C(a) \,\inf_B \bigg(\sup_{t\in (0,1)} \frac1{H^{n-1}(\partial ((1-t) B))} \int_{\partial ((1-t) B)} \frac{\operatorname{Cap}_{n-2}(B(x,atr_B)\setminus \Omega)}{(t\,r_B)^{n-3}}\,dH^{n-1}(x)\bigg)^2,$$ where the infimum is taken over all balls $B$ with the same Lebesgue measure as $\Omega$ and $\operatorname{Cap}_{n-2}$ is the Newtonian capacity of homogeneity $n-2$. In fact, this holds for bounded subdomains of the sphere and the hyperbolic space, as well. In a second result, we also apply the new Faber-Krahn type inequalities to quantify the Hayman-Friedland inequality about the characteristics of disjoint domains in the unit sphere. Thirdly, we propose a natural extension of Carleson's $\varepsilon^2$-conjecture to higher dimensions in terms of a square function involving the characteristics of certain spherical domains, and we prove the necessity of the finiteness of such square function in the tangent points via the Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman monotonicity formula. Finally, we answer in the negative a question posed by Allen, Kriventsov and Neumayer in connection to rectifiability and the positivity set of the ACF monotonicity formula.

Semiclassical inequalities for Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians on convex domains

Abstract:We are interested in inequalities that bound the Riesz means of the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplaciancs in terms of their semiclassical counterpart. We show that the classical inequalities of Berezin-Li-Yau and Kröger, valid for Riesz exponents $\gamma\geq 1$, extend to certain values $\gamma<1$, provided the underlying domain is convex. We also characterize the implications of a possible failure of Pólya's conjecture for convex sets in terms of Riesz means. These findings allow us to describe the asymptotic behavior of solutions of a spectral shape optimization problem for convex sets.

Abstract:We prove the immediate appearance of a lower bound for mild solutions to the full Boltzmann equation in the torus or a $C^2$ convex domain with specular boundary conditions, under the sole assumption of continuity away from the grazing set of the solution. These results are entirely constructive if the domain is $C^3$ and strictly convex. We investigate a wide range of collision kernels, some satisfying Grad's cutoff assumption and others not. We show that this lower bound is exponential, independent of time and space with explicit constants depending only on the \textit{a priori} bounds on the solution. In particular, this lower bound is Maxwellian in the case of cutoff collision kernels. A thorough study of characteristic trajectories, as well as a geometric approach of grazing collisions against the boundary are derived.

Abstract:We study the eigenvalues of Hodge--Laplace operators over bounded convex domains. Generalizing contributions by Guerini and Savo, we show that the Poincaré--Friedrichs constants of the Sobolev de~Rham complexes increase with the degree of the forms. We establish that the spectra of Hodge--Laplace operators converge when the domain is approximated by a sequence of convex domains up to a bi-Lipschitz deformation of the boundary. As preparatory work with independent relevance, we study the gauge function and the reciprocal radial function of convex sets, providing new proofs for Lipschitz estimates by Vrećica and Toranzos for the reciprocal radial function and improving a Lipschitz estimate for the gauge function due to Beer.

This is achieved by a duality argument relating the problem to a Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev type inequality whose sharp constant is determined as well.
