Abstract:The non-biodegradability and microtoxicity of harmful anions in water, especially hexavalent chromium, have caused serious damage to the environment and human health. Therefore, research on efficient and environmentally friendly adsorbents for the removal of Cr(VI) becomes essential. In this paper, we propose for the first time to effectively remove Cr(VI) anion by aminated graphene oxide/cellulose oxide nanocellulose/sodium alginate porous materials (NH 2 -GO/NOC/SA) prepared by cross-linking aminated graphene oxide with biomass materials (oxidized nanocellulose and sodium alginate) via epichlorohydrin. The porous materials were characterized using tools such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electroluminescence (EDS), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The optimum adsorption performance of the porous material was obtained by varying the initial concentration (from 100 to 500 mg/L), pH (from 1 to 8), and adsorption time (from 15 min to 72 h) of the Cr(VI) solution. The analysis of the adsorption data showed that the adsorption process was more in line with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and Langmuir isotherm model, and the equilibrium adsorption amount reached 394.1 mg/g. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on the NH 2 -GO/NOC/SA porous material was achieved by electrostatic interactions, Schiff base chemical bonding energy, ion exchange, protonation, precipitation, and hydrogen bonding. In conclusion, the experimental results show that the biomass adsorbent NH2-GO/NOC/SA can be consistently applied to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract:The swift industrialization and urbanisation have led to the discharge of significant amounts of hazardous heavy metals into water environments. Heavy metal pollution is currently one of the most significant environmental challenges being addressed, attracting researchers due to its biotoxicity, and non-biodegradability even at minimal concentrations [1]. Chromium (Cr) is among the most prevalent heavy metal contaminants. Its oxidation state, Cr(VI), harms the environment yet has catastrophic consequences for human health [2]. It is removed by physical and chemical procedures such as ion exchange, chemical precipitation and electrochemical treatment. Yet, most of these procedures have downsides, such as the formation of hazardous sludge, causing disposal issues and the need for costly tools and monitoring systems [3]. Adsorption is regarded an appealing and favourable technology because to its ease of design, simplicity, and high efficiency. Carbon-based nanomaterials have been investigated as superior adsorbents in aqueous solutions for the separation of organic and inorganic contaminants. The current study recommends the usage of adsorbents based on graphene oxide (GO). GO is an oxygen-rich material that is produced during the oxidation of graphite. It features hydrophobic areas due to aromatic groups in the nanosheets' centres, along with a large number of hydrophilic functional groups such as hydroxy, aldehyde, epoxy, and carboxyl groups [4]. The latter allow GO to swell and perform electrostatic functions. Chitosan (Cs) is a great adsorbent since it is inexpensive, is biocompatible, and causes no secondary pollution. Its molecular chains include -NH2 and -OH groups, which can interact with heavy metal ions and give significant adsorption capacity [5]. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles with graphene oxide have better physical and chemical characteristics than graphene oxide-like surface area. Similar research has revealed that the presence of SiO2 increases the adsorbent's adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) [6]. The effect of the pH value, contact time and initial chromium concentration was examined in order to determine the feasibility of Cs/GO@SiO2. Its structure and the morphology were studied in detail by the application of BET, XRD, FTIR and SEM techniques. According to the results, the modification of Cs with GO@SiO2 enhanced the percentage removal of chromium ions, especially, in acidic conditions by using 0.5 g/L of the adsorbent. Experimental data of equilibrium were used to calculate adsorption isotherms. According to thermodynamics the spontaneous nature of their adsorption was confirmed. Overall, the results indicate that Cs/GO@SiO2 can be effectively employed for removal of chromium from aqueous solutions.
High nitrogen content bimolecular co-functionalized graphene nanoflakes for hypertoxic Cr(VI) removal: Insights into adsorption behavior and mechanisms

Abstract:The proven high carcinogenicity to humans and high destructive force to the environment determine the extreme urgency of eliminating hypertoxic Cr(VI) in water bodies. Herein, a route of room temperature synthesis and secondary grafting was proposed to fabricate graphene oxide-based nanoadsorbent co-functionalized with polydopamine and branched polyethyleneimine (GOPP) to remove Cr(VI). The flexible decoration of polydopamine and polyethyleneimine on GO flakes could gradually enhance the amount of N-containing functional groups and realize selective removal of Cr(VI) with the maximum experimental adsorption capacity of 564.7 mg/g, displaying a significantly high separation factor against alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and other transition metal ions. Various combination mechanisms, such as electrostatic attraction, reduction, complexation, and hydrogen bonding, were demonstrated to be involved in the adsorption process of Cr(VI) by XPS, ESP, and DFT calculations. And the interaction energies of the five protonated configurations of primary amine, tertiary amine, secondary amine, imine, and secondary amine on the ring with HCrO4- were: -22.66, -12.08, -24.92, -24.26, -27.64 kcal/mol. In the actual industrial wastewater study, a Cr(VI) removal rate of 85.8% was realized. This work provided a viable idea for the elimination of Cr(VI) and was expected to be applied in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Terwilliger [J. Algebraic Combin.1 (1992), 363–388] considered the C-algebra generated by a given Bose Mesner algebra M and the associated dual Bose Mesner algebra M*. This algebra is now known as the Terwilliger algebra and is usually denoted by T. Terwilliger showed that each vanishing intersection number and Krein parameter of M gives rise to a relation on certain generators of T. These relations are often called the triple product relations. They determine much of the structure of T, though not all of it in general. To illuminate the role these relations play, the current author introduced [J. Algebra233 (2000), 213–252] a generalization T of T. To go from T to T, we replace M and M* with a pair of dual character algebras C and C*. The dimensions of C and C* are equal; let d + 1 denote this common dimension. Intuitively, T is the associative C-algebra with identity generated by C and C* subject to the analogues of Terwilliger's triple product relations. T is infinite-dimensional and noncommutative in general. In this paper we study T and its finite-dimensional modules when d = 2 and T has no “extra” vanishing intersection numbers or dual intersection numbers. In this case we show T is C-algebra isomorphic to M3(C) ⊕ A, where M3(C) denotes the C-algebra consisting of all 3-by-3 matrices with entries in C and A denotes the associative C-algebra with identity generated by the symbols e and f subject to the relations e2 = e and f2 = f. We find a basis for A and we determine the center of A. We classify the finite-dimensional indecomposable A-modules up to isomorphism. There are four such A-modules in every odd dimension, and in every even dimension these modules are parameterized by a single complex number. We also classify the finite-dimensional irreducible A-modules up to isomorphism. Using our results concerning A, we find a basis for T, we describe the center of T, and we classify both the finite-dimensional indecomposable and the finite-dimensional irreducible T-modules up to isomorphism.
Efficient heavy metal removal from water by alginate-based porous nanocomposite hydrogels: The enhanced removal mechanism and influencing factor insight

Abstract:Novel porous alginate-based nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by incorporating polyaniline-polypyrrole modified graphene oxide () as reinforcing fillers into the alginate matrix (/SA) for Cr(VI) and Cu(II) removal from water. Different in-situ co-polymerization functionalized GO with Py-to-An mass ratios of monomers (from nil to 1:1) and contents of (from nil to 2.0%(w/v)) were embedded into the alginate backbone to improve the sorption performance. Key factors, such as pH, coexisting metal ions, and swelling states were investigated in batch adsorption modes. The synergistic effect combined from polymer backbone and fillers could lower the impact of the pH-dependent adsorption reaction. With an adsorption ability superior to that of plain SA and GO/SA, the optimized (1)/SA exhibited good experimental maximum adsorption capacities for Cr(VI) (~133.7 mg/g) and Cu(II) (~87.2 mg/g) at pH 3.0, which were better than those of many other similar sorbents. The sorbents possessed excellent adaptability for 0.2 M salt for Cr(VI) removal but poor for Cu(II) removal. Pre-swelling treatment and co-adsorption could enhance the adsorption performance. The excellent reusability of hydrogel was demonstrated after five cycles in single/binary system. Overall, this work reveals that the resultant hydrogel holds potential as candidate sorbent to remove anionic-cationic heavy metal ions from water.

Inclusion of bimetallic Fe0.75Cu0.25-BDC MOFs into Alginate-MoO3/GO as a novel nanohybrid for adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium from water

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as porous materials have recently attracted research works in removal of toxic pollutants from water. Cr(VI) is well-known as one of the most toxic forms of chromium and the selection of efficient and effective Cr(VI)-remediation technology must be focused on a number of important parameters. Therefore, the objective of this work is to fabricate a novel nanohybrid adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) by using assembled bimetallic MOFs (Fe0.75Cu0.25-BDC)-bound- Alginate-MoO3/Graphene oxide (Alg-MoO3/GO) via simple solvothermal process. The aimed Fe0.75Cu0.25-BDC@Alg-MoO3/GO nanohybrid was confirmed by FTIR, SEM, TEM, XRD and TGA. Adsorptive extraction of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution was aimed by various optimized experimental parameters providing optimum pH = 3, dosage = 5-10 mg, starting concentration of Cr(VI) = 5-15 mg L-1, shaking time = 5-10 min. The point of zero charge (pHPzc) was 3.8. For Cr(VI) removal by Fe0.75Cu0.25-BDC@Alg-MoO3/GO, four isotherm models were estimated: Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) with calculated correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.9934) for Langmuir model which was higher than others. The collected results from the kinetic study clarified that pseudo-second order model is the most convenient one for describing the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) and therefore, the adsorption process was suggested to rely on a chemisorption mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters referred that the adsorption mechanism is based on a spontaneous and exothermic process. Finally, the emerged Fe0.75Cu0.25-BDC@Alg-MoO3/GO nanohybrid was confirmed as an effective adsorbent for extraction of hexavalent chromium from real water specimens (tap, sea water and wastewater) with percentage recovery values > 98%.
Cr(VI) Removal from Aqueous Solution Using Chemically Reduced and Functionalized Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Chemically reduced and functionalized graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by refluxing of GO with ethylenediamine (ED) using dimethyl formamide (DMF) as solvent. It was confirmed that both ED and DMF contributed to the reduction and functionalization of GO. The resulting adsorbent (ED–DMF–RGO) with amine groups was highly efficient in removing Cr(VI) from its aqueous solution and could be easily separated by filtration. The optimum pH for total Cr removal was observed at pH 2.0 and the Cr(VI) removal capacity of ED–DMF–RGO at this pH was 92.15 mg g−1, which was about 27 times higher than that of activated carbon, even nearly 4–8 times higher than that of various modified activated carbons. The presence of other ions such as Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl−, and Br− had little effect on the removal of Cr(VI). Interestingly, Cr(VI) was reduced to low-toxic Cr(III) during the adsorption process, which followed an indirect reduction mechanism. Both the Cr(VI) adsorption and subsequent reduction of adsorbed Cr(VI) to Cr(III) contributed to the Cr(VI) removal. The obtained ED–DMF–RGO may be applicable in Cr(VI) removal if they are produced on a large scale and at low price in near future.

Abstract:A reinforced composite aerogel absorbent was synthesized using a green chemistry method and an environmentally friendly freeze-drying technique. The absorbent consisted of sodium alginate, polyethyleneimine (PEI), and graphene oxide (GO). The ability of the absorbent to remove Cr (VI) ions from aqueous solutions was studied. PEI was a nitrogen source for Cr (VI) removal and a cross-linking agent for GO sheets, while SA was a reinforcing material. The aerogel was investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, texture analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Batch studies were conducted to investigate the effect of pH and contact time on adsorption. The results indicated that the SA/PEI/GO aerogel had a maximum adsorption capacity of 174.05 mg·g −1 for Cr (VI) at pH 2. The adsorption mechanism was described using the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The aerogel demonstrated good regeneration ability and satisfactory recovery for Cr (VI) even after five cycles. These findings suggest that the composite aerogel could be a promising adsorbent for efficiently removing Cr (VI) from wastewater.

Abstract:Contamination of industrial and dietary water with Cr (VI) ions is known as a global concern. Industrial wastes containing elevated Cr (VI) concentration hazards and harmful to people and animals, if inappropriately treated. Consequently, in the current research, a novel nanocomposite of activated nanobentonite@cobalt ferrite@carboxymethylcellulose (ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC) is generated and characterized. Several characterization techniques were employed to confirm the structure of as-prepared ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC. The mean particle size range of this nanocomposite was found to be 22.5–26.2 nm. Through batch adsorption assessments, ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC was employed and optimized to remove Cr (VI) ions from aquatic medium providing optimum conditions of pH 2.0, 25–30 min shaking time, 25 mg nanocomposite dosage at 25 °C reaction temperature. Freundlich model was extremely relevant via linear and nonlinear expression. Thermodynamic investigations were investigated to conclude that both exothermal and spontaneously tendencies in governing Cr (VI) adsorptive uptake. The ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC was remarkably stable after five subsequent runs of regenerating and recycling. This investigation displayed the potential of ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC as a powerful nanocomposite material for Cr (VI) recovery from diverse waters via a microcolum technique, exhibiting uptake values up to 87.9–95.8 %. As a result, the evaluated ANB@CoFe 2 O 4 @CMC could be successfully illustrated as superior material for effective multi-uptake Cr (VI) ions from water.

Abstract:In this research, a solvothermal approach is introduced to synthesize a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) nanocomposite (GO/UiO-66-NDC) for the removal of Cr(VI) from water. A comprehensive analysis was performed to understand the physical, chemical, and structural properties of the MOF nanocomposite. The adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) was investigated by changing various parameters, such as pH, dosage, and concentration, to determine isotherms, thermodynamics, and kinetics. The results showed that the nanocomposite had a high tolerance to pH and thermal stability, with a high adsorption capacity of 157.23 mg g −1 for Cr(VI) at pH 3 due to the presence of zirconium oxide clusters. The density functional theory simulations showed that the nanocomposite had ten times more dynamic delocalized surface states, which enhanced the adsorption capacity and agreed with the experimental results. Furthermore, the nanocomposite exhibited better regeneration performance compared to previously reported materials, making it a promising super-adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) from water.

Confronting the severe health threats and environmental impacts of Cr(VI) in aquatic environments demands innovative and effective remediation approaches. In this study, Graphene oxide (GO)-decorated poly(dimethyl amino ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brush nanocomposites (GOP1, GOP2, GOP3, and GOP4) were fabricated using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) by the "graft from" method. The resulting nanocomposites were utilized for removing Cr(VI) with good adsorption performance due to the electrostatic interaction of protonated nitrogen groups in the brush chains with negatively charged particles in the solution. The kinetic model of pseudo-second-order best represented the contaminants' adsorption characteristics. The Weber–Morris model further indicated that surface adsorption and intraparticle diffusion mechanisms primarily controlled the adsorption procedure. Additionally, the Langmuir and Temkin isotherm models were found to most accurately represent the adsorption characteristics of the pollutants on the nanocomposites, and GOP4 can achieve the maximum adsorption capacity of 164.4 mg·g –1 . The adsorbents' capacity maintains above 85% after five cycles of adsorption-desorption. The nanocomposites in this study demonstrate promising potential for eliminating Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Abstract:A nanocomposite α-Fe2O3/graphene oxide (α-Fe2O3/GO) was prepared with a simple hydrothermal method. The as obtained α-Fe2O3/GO was used in removing aqueous Cr(Ⅵ). Batch adsorptions were conducted, the adsorption isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics and removal mechanism were analyzed. The adsorption of an aqueous solution of Cr(Ⅵ) initial concentration 100 mg L−1 onto α-Fe2O3/GO of a dosage 500 mg L−1 reached equilibrium in 7 min, and the adsorption quantity and adsorption percent were 172.63 mg L−1 and 86.31%, respectively. No obvious performance fluctuations were observed under varying environmental factors such as pH and electrolyte. The fast adsorption kinetics was owing to the morphological feature: thin morphology enabled fast pore diffusion. The high adsorption capacity was owing to the structural feature: mesopores in α-Fe2O3/GO gave high specific surface area and pore volume, where accommodate abundant oxygen containing groups as adsorption sites. The good adaptability to environmental factors (pH, electrolyte) was owing to the strong chemical interactions between α-Fe2O3/GO and Cr(Ⅵ). The removal mechanism included physical adsorption, ion exchange, surface complexation, and reduction. 62.46% of the surface adsorbed Cr(Ⅵ) was reduced to Cr(Ⅲ). The facile preparation and good adsorption performance would make α-Fe2O3/GO a promising adsorbent for Cr(Ⅵ).

Abstract:This study involves the preparation of sodium alginate poly grafted (fumaric acid-polyacrylic acid)/graphene oxide, SA-g-p(FA-AA)/GO hydrogel to explore its potential as a promising adsorbent for water treatment mainly chromium (VI) and lead (II) removal. Prepared adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, TGA, XRD, FESEM, and TEM techniques for exploring the chemical structure, thermal stability, crystallography, surface area and morphology, as well as pore size and distribution of SA-g-p(FA-AA)/GO, respectively. The average size of the prepared nanoparticles was observed to be 78.48 nm. The TEM images exhibit a predominantly spherical shape and heterogeneous. Effect of different physiochemical parameters such as pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and contact time was explored for maximum metal adsorption. The results of the study revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of SA-g-p(FA-AA)/GO (0.045 mg g −1 for Cr (VI) and 22.371 mg g −1 for Pb (II)) was achieved under optimized conditions, i.e., adsorbent dose of 0.05 g at 25 °C for pH of 2, 4.5 when contact time of 5 and 100 min was used for Cr(VI) and Pb(II), respectively. Data fits best to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation revealing the multilayer adsorption of Cr (VI) and Pb (II) ions on the heterogeneous adsorbent surface. Thermodynamically, the process of Cr (VI) and Pb (II) adsorption was non-spontaneous, exothermic and feasible revealing the potential of the prepared adsorbent to be used as an efficient adsorbent for metal removal.

Efficient Removal of Hexavalent Chromium and Congo Red by Graphene Oxide/Silica Nanosheets with Multistage Pores

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO)/silica nanosheets (GO/) were synthesized through in situ hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, followed by modification of hyperbranched polymer (HBP) to remove multiple pollutants (Cr(VI) and Congo red (CR)). Characterization methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), Raman, N2 adsorption/desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. were adopted. The results of Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis revealed that the prepared GO/ has a multistage pore structure with a specific surface area of 345.7176 m2·g–1. The factors of adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, initial solution concentration, pH, etc. that influence adsorption were studied. The maximum adsorption quantities of Cr(VI) and CR at room temperate were 92.2510 and 416.6667 mg·g–1, respectively, and the removal could still be over 90% after three cycles for Cr(VI). Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherms were more suitable to describe the adsorption process. A possible adsorption mechanism was also proposed. It could be considered as a promising adsorbent because of its good adsorption effect and reproducible property.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We herein report a facile strategy to prepare poly(allylamine hydrochloride) cross-linked amino-modified graphene oxide (PAH-ASGO) by Schiff-base reactions. The resulting PAH-ASGO exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 373.1 mg/g for Cr(VI), which was nearly 9 times higher than that of pure graphene oxide, exceeding that of most GO-based materials previously reported. More significantly, PAH-ASGO can effectively diminish the Cr(VI) concentration from 9.9 mg/L to the extremely low level of 0.004 mg/L within 10 s, far below the maximum allowable level of Cr(VI) (0.05 mg/L) in drinking water. In addition, the adsorbents still displayed excellent removal efficiency of 91.8% after 10 cycles. Considering the broad diversity, we developed also a magnetic PAH-ASGO/Fe3O4 adsorbent by a simple cross-linking reaction to achieve rapid separation of PAH-ASGO from their aqueous solution. Finally, the PAH-ASGO was successfully utilized to treat the actual industrial effluent.

Efficient removal of chromate from wastewater using a one-pot synthesis of chitosan cross-linked ceria incorporated hydrous copper oxide bio-polymeric composite

Abstract:Remediating hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from contaminated water systems is a significant concern due to its harmful effects on human health, aquatic life, and plants. To tackle this issue, scientists have created a chitosan cross-linked hydrous ceria incorporated cupric oxide bio-polymeric composite (CHCCO) by combining chitosan biopolymer with corresponding metal ions using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. The composite was characterized using advanced analytical instruments such as FTIR, p-XRD, SEM, XPS, etc. The synthesized composite (CHCCO) was then tested for its efficiency in removing Cr(VI) from synthetic Cr(VI) aqueous samples. The parameters examined included pH, material dose, contact time, concentration, temperature, and co-existing ions. The experimental data showed that the kinetics and equilibrium data fit well with the pseudo-second-order and the Freundlich isotherm models, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis demonstrated that the investigated surface adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Except for the SO42- ion, no other species imparts adverse influence significantly on the reaction. The CHCCO bio-composite surfaces were refreshed using a dilute NaOH (1.0 M) solution and effectively recycled five times for Cr(VI) adsorption, indicating no significant surface activity deterioration. This study highlights the high effectiveness of CHCCO bio-polymeric composites in Cr(VI) remediation and the potential for this technology as an easy-to-use technique for environmental restoration.
Ultra-high capacity and anti-interference for Cr(VI) removal by tannin-polyvinylimine modified graphite carbon nitride

Abstract:To combat the increasingly serious water pollution caused by heavy metal ions, the development of efficient adsorbents is of great significance. In this study, a novel composite adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal was smartly designed using environmentally friendly materials such as tannic acid (TA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) for surface modification of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets through covalent assembly of polyphenols and amines. The obtained (PEI-TA)-g-C 3 N 4 composite was capable of efficiently and quickly adsorbing Cr(VI) in water, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 769.23 mg/g at 308 K (35 °C), which was much higher than most reported Cr(VI) adsorbents. Notably, (PEI-TA)-g-C 3 N 4 could reduce highly toxic Cr(VI) to low toxic Cr(III) and effectively adsorb it. The Cr(VI) adsorption process was a spontaneous thermal adsorption process that conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the excellent photothermal performance of (PEI-TA)-g-C 3 N 4 further accelerated the adsorption of Cr(VI). Moreover, the strong anti-interference ability of (PEI-TA)-g-C 3 N 4 composite against anions and other metal ions enabled it to effectively remove Cr(VI) in complex environments, expanding its practical application scenarios. The polymer coatings rich in phenolic hydroxyl- and amine-rich formed on the large surface area of g-C 3 N 4 and the protonation of the amino groups are the keys for (PEI-TA)-g-C 3 N 4 composite to have ultra-high adsorption performance and strong anti-interference ability towards Cr(VI). The designed strategy of this metal-free and environmentally friendly composite with ultra-high removal of Cr(VI) capability from wastewater provides new ideas for developing green, inexpensive, and efficient adsorbents.

Abstract:Elevated chromium(VI) (Cr(IV)) concentrations in drinking water or ground water can pose a public health concern. In this study, layered double hydroxides-isethionate (LDH-ise) assisted covalent and electrostatic co-crosslinked cationic hydrogel (CH-LDH-ise) was prepared as a potential adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution. The scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results indicated that the LDH-ise sheets were exfoliated and crosslinked with the 3-(Acryloylamino) propyltrimethylaminium chloride (APTMACL) polymer chains. The adsorption of Cr(VI) onto the CH-LDH-ise was highly pH-dependent, and the removal efficiency by CH-LDH-ise composites was much higher than the CH (no crosslinker). The adsorption kinetic followed a pseudo-second-order, and reached equilibrium within 2 h. The corresponding maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of CH-LDH-ise was 408.4 mg/g at the equilibrium concentration of 364.4 mg/L. The enhanced adsorption of Cr(VI) was also achieved in the presence of competing anions (including Cl−, NO3−, SO42−, HCO3−, SiO44−, and HA). Moreover, the in situ regeneration/recycle results implied the column adsorption capacity of CH-LDH-ise was 2250 bed volumes as the concentration of Cr(VI) decreased from 2.5 mg/L to 0.1 mg/L (The US drinking water standard for total chromium) at empty bed contact time = 6 min, and slightly decreased in the second recycle. The combination analysis of in situ Fourier transform infrared, in situ Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and electron paramagnetic resonance revealed that the Cr(VI) capture mechanism was dominated by the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding effect - the sources of the –N+(CH3)3 and –NH groups in CH-LDH-ise, respectively.

Abstract:Removing heavy metal ions from wastewater reduces health and ecological risks and allows for their reuse. Polymer inclusion membranes with integrated ion carriers offer an efficient solution for removing toxic metal ions from industrial wastewater. These membranes can be further enhanced by using biodegradables polymer blends and incorporating nanofillers to improve their selectivity, stability, extraction efficiency, and biodegradability. In this study, a novel biodegradable polymer blend consisting of 54% poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and 13% polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) was utilized as the base polymer, with 30% Aliquat 336 as an ion carrier and either 3% graphene oxide (GO) or 3% cloisite 30B (C30B) as nanofillers. The hybrid blend contained a total of 3% nanofillers, with 1.5% graphene oxide (GO) and 1.5% cloisite 30B (C30B). These components were integrated through the evaporation casting method and evaluated for their potential as polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) for Cr(VI) extraction. Various analytical methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were employed to explore the microstructure-property relationships of the fabricated nanocomposite PIMs. The analyses revealed the development of new semi-crystalline membrane structures, resulting in enhanced hexavalent chromium extraction. It was found that the presence of nanofillers altered the bulk structure, creating apparent microvoids in the membranes filled with 3% GO and the hybrid membrane, which were not observed in membranes filled with C30B. This resulted in higher extraction efficiency in the membranes loaded with GO, whereas membranes loaded with C30B exhibited decreased Cr(VI) extraction. An intermediate extraction percentage was found in the hybrid membrane filled with both nanofillers. Additionally, the incorporation of GO and C30B significantly improved membrane stability across various media, reducing mass loss in NaCl/NaOH to 13.36%. The TGA analyses further confirmed that membranes incorporating GO and C30B exhibited improved thermal stability.

Abstract:The encapsulation and eradication of anions from water have received a lot of scrutinize and are extremely important for virtuous production and environmental treatment. To prepare extremely efficient adsorbents, a highly functionalized and conjugated microporous porphyrin-based adsorbent material (Co-4MPP) was synthesized using the Alder Longo method. Co-4MPP featured a hierarchical microporous and mesoporous layered structure containing nitrogen and oxygen-based functional groups with a specific surface area of 685.209 m 2 /g and a pore volume of 0.495 cm 3 /g. Co-4MPP demonstrated a greater Cr (VI) adsorption empathy than the pristine porphyrin-based material did. The effects of various parameters such as pH, dose, time, and temperature were explored on the Cr (VI) adsorption by Co-4MPP. The pseudo-second-order model and the Cr (VI) adsorption kinetics were in agreement ( R 2 = 0.999). The Langmuir isotherm model matched the Cr (VI) adsorption isotherm, demonstrating the optimum Cr (VI) adsorption capacities: 291.09, 307.42, and 339.17 mg/g at 298K, 312K, and 320K, correspondingly, with remediation effectiveness of 96.88%. The model evaluation further revealed that Cr (VI) adsorption mechanism on Co-4MPP was endothermic, spontaneous, and entropy-rising. The detailed discussion of the adsorption mechanism suggested that it could be a reduction, chelation, and electrostatic interaction, in which the protonated nitrogen and oxygen-containing functional groups on the porphyrin ring interacted with Cr (VI) anions to form a stable complex, thus remediating Cr (VI) anions efficiently. Moreover, Co-4MPP demonstrated strong reusability, maintaining 70% of its Cr (VI) elimination rate after four consecutive adsorptions.
