Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated a sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing protocol for the detection of TNT prepared from alkanethiols self-assembled on AuNPs modified glassy carbon (GC) electrode with preadsorbed templates of TNT. It demonstrated that the 2D molecular imprinting monolayers (MIMs) can provide a better site accessibility and lower mass-transfer resistance, while the AuNPs can enhance electrode conductivity, facilitate the electron transfer and increase the amount of TNT-imprinted sites. The prepared sensor showed not only high selectivity toward TNT in comparison to other similar nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), but also a wide linear range over TNT concentration from 4.0×10−8 to 3.2×10−6M with a detection limit of 1.3×10−8M (S/N=3). Moreover, the imprinted sensor has been applied to the determination of TNT in spiked environmental water samples and shows promise for fast and sensitive measurement of trace levels of TNT in real samples.

Abstract:In this study, a nanobiosensor for detecting explosives was developed, in which the peptide was synthesized with trinitrotoluene (TNT)-specific sequence and immobilized on nanodevice by Au–S covalent linkage, and the nanocup arrays were fabricated by nanoimprint and deposited with Au nanoparticles to generate localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The device was used to monitor slight change from specific binding of 2,4,6-TNT to the peptide. With high refractive index sensing of ~10 4 nm/RIU, the nanocup device can detect the binding of TNT at concentration as low as 3.12 × 10 −7 mg mL −1 by optical transmission spectrum modulated by LSPR. The nanosensor is also able to distinguish TNT from analogs of 2,4-dinitrotoluene and 3-nitrotoluene in the mixture with great selectivity. The peptide-based nanosensor provides novel approaches to design versatile biosensor assays by LSPR for chemical molecules.
Fabrication of a self-assembled and flexible SERS nanosensor for explosive detection at parts-per-quadrillion levels from fingerprints

Abstract:Apart from high sensitivity and selectivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based trace explosive detection, efficient sampling of explosive residue from real world surfaces is very important for homeland security applications. Herein, we demonstrate an entirely new SERS nanosensor fabrication approach. The SERS nanosensor was prepared by self-assembling chemically synthesized gold triangular nanoprisms (Au TNPs), which we show display strong electromagnetic field enhancements at the sharp tips and edges, onto a pressure-sensitive flexible adhesive film. Our SERS nanosensor provides excellent SERS activity (enhancement factor = ∼6.0 × 106) and limit of detection (as low as 56 parts-per-quadrillions) with high selectivity by chemometric analyses among three commonly military high explosives (TNT, RDX, and PETN). Furthermore, the SERS nanosensors present excellent reproducibility (<4.0% relative standard deviation at 1.0 μM concentration) and unprecedentedly high stability with a "shelf life" of at least 5 months. Finally, TNT and PETN were analyzed and quantified by transferring solid explosive residues from fingerprints left on solid surfaces to the SERS nanosensor. Taken together, the demonstrated sensitivity, selectivity, and reliability of the measurements as well as with the excellent shelf life of our SERS nanosensors obviate the need for complicated sample processing steps required for other analytical techniques, and thus these nanosensors have tremendous potential not only in the field of measurement science but also for homeland security applications to combat acts of terror and military threats.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has undergone an important development in the detection and identification of extremely low traces of explosives over the past few years. Here we fabricated a new type of three-dimensional (3D) SERS sensors by loading on bacterial cellulose aerogels for the detection of 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). The aerogel substrates with hierarchical pore structure are favored by the construction of dense 3D hot-spot distribution and the enrichment of TNT molecules. The retention aid of polyethyleneimine was used to improve the loading capacity as well as prevent the aggregation of nanoparticles. Moreover, were modified with p-aminobenzenethiol to improve the affinity of SERS substrates to TNT via the formation of Meisenheimer complex. Owing to the unique structure and morphology of , the composite SERS substrate can detect trace TNT with a limit of detection of 8 × 10-12 g/L and the SERS enhancement factor is high up to 1.87 × 108.

High sensitive setup of gold nanorods substrates for explosives detection using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a sensitive analytical technique that has been widely utilised for detection of trace levels of organic species. The detection of trace levels of poor vapour pressure molecules such as explosives is a critical challenging due to the low concentration of adsorbed molecules on the surface sites of the SERS substrate. In this work, gold nanorods were fabricated with analyte samples and provided highly sensitivity of SERS detection along with low limit-of-detection (LOD) for explosives down to pM of 2,4- dinitrotoluene (DNT) and nM of both 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and 1,3,5-trinitroperhydro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) with highly specificity. The sensitivity of the detection was developed by optimising the adsorption of the molecules on nanorods sites, where nanorods and analyte solution were mixed followed by rigorous stirring. This procedure allowed extra molecules to be adsorbed on the nanorods surface, thus, high SERS enhanced has been observed with high specific identification of target probes. This approach showed a powerful method for rapid detection of explosives based SERS technique especially for illicit samples, where the enhancement factor calculated for analytes was in the range 3.17×108 to 2.69×1011.

Abstract:Non-invasive and passive detection of explosives in the vapor phase is advantageous for military, counter-terrorism, and homeland security applications. Detection of explosives using SERS has been an active research topic. However, the vapor pressures of most explosives are low at room temperature, and consequently, the vapor phase detection by SERS is highly challenging without intentionally heating explosive powder to increase the vapor pressure. In this work, we report the rapid and sensitive detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) in the vapor phase, using a gold nanogap (AuNG) SERS substrate. The AuNG SERS substrate was fabricated with electron beam evaporation, rapid thermal annealing, and wet etching. SERS measurements were carried out with an incident power as low as 0.56 mW at 785 nm. To prevent the condensation effect, the TNT and 2,4-DNT powders inside the cuvette were taken out before inserting the nanogap substrate. Our SERS results demonstrate the feasibility of the non-invasive detection of vapor phase explosives under ambient conditions.

Abstract:In this study, we reported a novel highly ordered nano-micro hierarchical structure on flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer as a SERS stamp for ultrasensitive detection, which can generate huge SERS signals with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) owing to a multiscale coupling electromagnetic enhancement mechanism. Highly ordered nanowrinkles were prepared by oxygen plasma and stretching treatment of PDMS. Indeed, a tactfully designed zigzag micropattern can efficiently reduce the fracture defects of nanowrinkles because the contraction force can be lessened at releasing step. This proposed substrate has high reproducibility and uniformity that the relative standard deviation (RSD) was below 7 %. With uniform hot spots on this novel flexible SERS substrate, 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) residues can be detected on coarse surfaces of target item. A molecule interaction mechanism of Meisenheimer complex was applied to combine AgNPs and nanowrinkles for highly sensitive detecting TNT. The detection sensitivity of TNT molecules can achieve a limit of 10(-13) mol L-1. Additionally, a practical application was proceeded by wiping the cloth bag to detect the TNT residues with a limit of 10(-9)mol L-1. This demonstrated stamp-like flexible substrate showed unique SERS activity and noninvasive sampling, it is expected to be a promising tool for the explosive, drug and environmental pollutant in field-detection.
Multifunctional Flexible SERS Sensor on a Fixate Gel Pad: Capturing, Derivation, and Selective Picogram Indirect Detection of Explosive 2,2',4,4',6,6'-Hexanitrostilbene

Abstract:2,2',4,4',6,6'-Hexanitrostilbene (HNS) is an explosive with better explosion performance than the well-known 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT). Surprisingly, unlike other nitroaromatic explosives, there are limited reports regarding the detection of the HNS, let alone sensing reports on surface residues. In this work, a multifunctional flexible SERS sensor was proposed for the indirect detection of HNS based on the transparent fixate gel pads. The sticky and flexible gel pad can effectively collect any HNS surface residues. The inherent amine groups within the gel pad of which the main ingredient is polyurethane can react with HNS to form the orange Meisenheimer-alike complex. The modification of Ag NPs with halide ions was screened for the best SERS performance. KI-modified-citrate-reduced Ag NPs showed selective but enormous SERS enhancement for the HNS derivative. The detection of HNS in the solution phase was explored, and a linear range of 0.01-25 ppm was achieved. The lowest detectable amount (LDA) of HNS was found to be 50 pg, making it one of the most sensitive methods in literature. It was successfully utilized for the HNS residues sensing on fingerprints and bags with LDAs of 5 and 200 ng, respectively. In addition, other explosives including TATB, LLM-105, RDX, HMX, FOX-7, and TNT were also examined to assess the selectivity of the fixate. It was found that the fixate showed excellent selectivity for HNS.

Abstract:A portable UV (190–400nm) spectrophotometric based reflected fiber optic sensor system is presented for the on-site detection and identification of explosives. A reflected fiber optic sensor for explosives analysis was developed, with low sample consumption (20–100nL) and a wide concentration quantification range (1.1–250mgL−1). Seven common explosives [pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), trinitrophenylmethylnitramine (CE), trinitrotoluene (TNT), dinitrotoluene (DNT), picric acid (PA), cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX), cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX)] and a PETN–RDX mixture (to simulate the Semtex used in many terrorist bombings) were quantitatively analyzed and identified by the proposed system in less than 3s per test, with limits of detection (LOD) of 0.3mgL−1. Due to chemical interference problems in the UV wavelengths range, a novel feature matching algorithm (FMA) was proposed for explosive identification, which was proved to have higher specificity and better anti-interference ability. Real post-blast debris samples were analyzed by the proposed method, and the results were validated against an LC/MS/MS method. The rapid, cost-effective detection with low sample consumption and wide applicability achieved by this system is highly suitable for homeland security on-site applications, such as rapid sample screening in post-blast debris.

Abstract:Flexible surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates have received more and more attention for their non‐invasive sample collection ability. However, majority of them have poor stability and reproducibility because noble metal is easily oxidized and led to lose SERS activity. Herein, SiO2‐TiO2‐Ag hybrids aerogel (STAHA) material is first applied as a flexible SERS substrate for explosives and dyes long‐term sensitive detection. The sensitive non‐invasive detection of 3‐nitro‐1, 2, 4‐triazol‐5‐one (NTO) residues can be achieved with a limit of 1 × 10−6 m by wiping sample collection method. Meanwhile, similar SERS sensitivity from long‐term (50 days) kept substrates is observed compared with fresh‐made substrates. This long‐term sensitivity is contributed to electronic transfer compensation from TiO2 aerogel. This proposed flexible STAHA enrich the type of SERS substrates, and their long‐term sensitivity can provide a prospective application for trace analyses of explosives and other hazardous residues in criminal forensic, military, and security check. Two-dimensional Molybdenum Disulfide (mos2) with Gold Nanoparticles for Biosensing of Explosives by Optical Spectroscopy

Abstract:As one of the most important transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) materials, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has gained extensive attention for its marvelous optoelectronic properties. In this study, nanocomposites of two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with plasmonic noble metal nanoparticles were synthesized by a one-step green process. Under irradiation, 2D MoS2 in the nanocomposites absorbed photons and generated carriers in a wide spectrum. Then MoS2 coupled to gold nanoparticles and produced the enhanced electromagnetic field in the nanosturctures, leading to outstanding optical properties. In virtue of bio-compatibilities of the particles, the nanocomposites were chemically modified with specific peptides to construct an optical biosensor for explosive detection. When exposed to 2,4,6 -trinitrotoluene (TNT), the biosensor showed significant absorption peak changes in visible spectra with a concentration-dependent behavior. The biosensor could detect TNT at the concentration as low as 2 x 10(-7) M. For selectivity, the biosensor could differentiate TNT from other nitroaromatic explosives that have extremely similar structures to TNT, such as 4-nitrotoluene (4-NT) and 2,6-dinitrotoluene (DNT). All the results suggested that the biosensor based on the nanocomposites of 2D MoS2 coupling to plasmonic nanoparticles exhibited remarkable optical performance, which provided a promising approach to design versatile biosensors to detect biochemical molecules. Abstract:A novel approach for identifying explosive species is reported, using Raman spectroscopy in suspended core optical fibers. Numerical simulations are presented that predict the strength of the observed signal as a function of fiber geometry, with the calculated trends verified experimentally and used to optimize the sensors. This technique is used to identify hydrogen peroxide in water solutions at volumes less than 60 nL and to quantify microgram amounts of material using the solvent's Raman signature as an internal calibration standard. The same system, without further modifications, is also used to detect 1,4-dinitrobenzene, a model molecule for nitrobenzene-based explosives such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT).

Abstract:The advent of miniaturized, fiber-based, Raman spectrometers provides a clear path for the wide implementation of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in analytical chemistry. For instance, miniaturized systems are especially useful in field applications due to their simplicity and low cost. However, traditional SERS substrates are generally developed and optimized using expensive Raman microscope systems equipped with high numerical aperture (NA) objective lenses. Here, we introduced a new type of SERS substrate with intrinsic Raman photon directing capability that compensates the relatively low signal collection power of fiber-based Raman spectrometers. The substrate was tested for the detection of buried 2,4-dinitrotoluene in simulated field conditions. A linear calibration curve (R2 = 0.98) for 2,4-dinitrotoluene spanning 3 orders of magnitude (from μg kg–1 to mg kg–1) was obtained with a limit of detection of 10 μg kg–1 within a total volume of 10 μL. This detection level is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that possible with the current state-of-the-art technologies, such as ion mobility spectrometry–mass spectrometry. Abstract:In the past decades, various methods, such as chemical sensing, X-ray screening, and spectroscopy, have been employed to detect explosives for environmental protection and national public security. However, achieving ultrahigh sensitivity for detection, which is crucial for some practical applications, remains challenging. This study employs scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS) to detect individual ∼200 nm explosive nanoparticles of octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX). The vibrational modes of HMX were acquired for each single nanoparticle under the aloof STEM-EELS mode, which ensures damage-free detection. Detailed comparisons with Raman and infrared spectra validate the acquired data's origin. This work highlights STEM-EELS as an effective tool in explosives detection, offering ultrahigh sensitivity, damage-free, and nanometer spatial resolution, with potential applications in environmental protection, public security, and criminal investigations.

Abstract:A highly efficient and sensitive ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) system with laser desorption sampling was applied for rapid explosive detection using different surface materials. This portable IMS detector, powered by a battery, offers mobility and is suitable for use in the field or combat zones. The laser desorption (LD) sampling of common explosives (Trinitrotoluene—TNT; Dinitrotoluenes—DNTs; Hexogene—RDX; pentaerythritol tetranitrate—PETN; plastic explosives—Compound 4 (C-4) and Semtex) on a wide range of common surface materials, such as metal, ceramic, plastic, glass, drywall, paper, wood, and textiles, was studied. Successful detection was achieved on nearly all surfaces except flammable materials (paper, wood, and textiles). The limit of detection (LOD) was determined for each explosive and specific surface, demonstrating an impressive LOD of 7 ng/mm2 for TNT. RDX, C-4, PETN, and Semtex achieved LOD values of 15 ng/mm2, while DNTs showed an LOD of approximately 50 ng/mm2.

Abstract:In this study, a novel composite Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrate is proposed for ultrasensitive detection. Consisting of gold sinusoidal nanograting and silver colloidal nanoparticles (AgNPs-AuSG), this type of SERS substrate is easy for fabrication by maskless laser interference lithography, and capable of providing large-scale ultra-high field enhancement, attributed to localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The enhancement factor (EF) of this composite substrate is as high as up to 10 orders of magnitude in the simulation experiment. Experimental results show that this large-area, productive SERS substrate of AgNPs-AuSG has realized sensitive TNT and RDX detection with the limit of detection (LOD) of 10−10 M, which may be a potential candidate for trace explosives detection.

Abstract:The development of efficient sensors for rapid and accurate detection of explosives is a critical requirement for various security and safety applications. In this study, we present a novel approach that utilizes a terahertz sensor enhanced by graphene and a gold metasurface deposited on a glass substrate for the identification of nitroglycerine, TNT, and RDX. The integration of these nanomaterials into the sensor design significantly enhances its sensitivity and specificity to trace amounts of explosives. This innovative sensor offers a multifaceted approach to achieve both high sensitivity and specificity by leveraging the unique characteristics of gold, graphene, and glass within a metasurface architecture. The implications of these are substantial, indicating the sensor's significant promise in forensic drug detection. The results highlight the exceptional performance traits of the proposed graphene metasurface sensor. With a maximum sensitivity of 927 GHz/RIU and a detection limit of 0.189 RIU − 1, the sensor showcases its impressive capabilities. Additionally, the sensor resolutions and FOM, calculated at 0.025 and 4.905 RIU-1, respectively, underscore its ability to precisely measure even the most delicate alterations in the refractive index.
