Abstract:Electrolytic deposition of magnesium-substituted hydroxyapatite (Mg-HAp) coatings on titanium was investigated and Mg-HAp crystals with up to 2 wt.% Mg2+ were deposited in electrolytes with various Mg2+ concentration. The incorporation of Mg substantially changed the morphology of the HAp crystals and decreased the crystal size and crystallinity of the HAp. The similarity with natural dentin and bone in composition and the increased specific surface of the Mg-HAp coatings oil the Ti substrates were believed to benefit the bioactivity and the drug-carrying properties of the coatings. Synthesis and Characterization of Zn-substituted Hydroxyapatite Coatings by Electrochemical Deposition

Abstract:Zn-substituted hydroxyapatite(HAP) coatings on titanium substrates were obtained by electrochemical deposition technique.Scanning electron microscopy was utilized to observe the effect of zinc on the morphology of achieved coatings.The results show that,in the condition of Zn absence in the electrolyte,regular hexagonal and highly crystallized rod-like HAP structure is confirmed,with edge length of about 90nm.However,the presence of Zn in the electrolyte inhibits the morphology transformation of HAP crystals from the initial round rod to the hexagonal rod at the matured stage.X-ray diffractometry(XRD) and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy reveal that Zn would deteriorate the crystallization of HAP significantly.Zn-substituted HAP crystals are identified when deposited in the electrolytes with Zn less than 25mol%,whereas amorphous Ca(Zn)Ps emerge when Zn reaches to 25mol% in the electrolyte.Slow-scanning X-ray diffraction experiments show that lattice parameter a of HAP descends with addition of Zn when its concentration is below 10mol%,but increases by further Zn addition.The parameter c changes inversely correspondingly.
Biological and Physico-Chemical Properties of Composite Layers Based on Magnesium-Doped Hydroxyapatite in Chitosan Matrix

Abstract:In the present study, we report the development and characterization of composite layers (by spin coating) based on magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite in a chitosan matrix, (Ca10-xMgx(PO4)6(OH)2; xMg = 0, 0.08 and 0.3; HApCh, 8MgHApCh and 30MgHApCh). The MgHApCh composite layers were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The in vitro biological evaluation included the assessment of their cytotoxicity on MG63 osteoblast-like cells and antifungal activity against Candida albicans ATCC 10231 fungal cell lines. The results of the physico-chemical characterization highlighted the obtaining of uniform and homogeneous composite layers. In addition, the biological assays demonstrated that the increase in the magnesium concentration in the samples enhanced the antifungal effect but also decreased their cytocompatibility. However, for certain optimal magnesium ion concentrations, the composite layers presented both excellent biocompatibility and antifungal properties, suggesting their promising potential for biomedical applications in both implantology and dentistry.
Physicochemical and Biological Evaluation of Chitosan-Coated Magnesium-Doped Hydroxyapatite Composite Layers Obtained by Vacuum Deposition

Abstract:In the present work, the effectiveness of vacuum deposition technique for obtaining composite thin films based on chitosan-coated magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite Ca10−xMgx(PO4)6 (OH)2 with xMg = 0.025 (MgHApCh) was proved for the first time. The prepared samples were exposed to three doses (0, 3, and 6 Gy) of gamma irradiation. The MgHApCh composite thin films nonirradiated and irradiated were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies. The biological evaluation of the samples was also presented. All the results obtained from this study showed that the vacuum deposition method allowed for obtaining uniform and homogeneous layers. Fine cracks were observed on the MgHApCh composite thin films' surface after exposure to a 6 Gy irradiation dose. Additionally, after gamma irradiation, a decrease in Ca, P, and Mg content was noticed. The MgHApCh composite thin films with doses of 0 and 3 Gy of gamma irradiation showed a cellular viability similar to that of the control. Samples with 6 Gy doses of gamma irradiation did not cause significantly higher fibroblast cell death than the control (p > 0.05). On the other hand, the homogeneous distribution of pores that appeared on the surface of coatings after 6 Gy doses of gamma irradiation did not prevent the adhesion of fibroblast cells and their spread on the coatings. In conclusion, we could say that the thin films could be suitable both for use in bone implants and for other orthopedic and dentistry applications.

Abstract:Osseointegration plays the most important role in the success of an implant. One of the applications of hydroxyapatite (HAp) is as a coating for metallic implants due to its bioactive nature, which improves osteoconduction. The purpose of this research was to assess the in vitro behavior of HAp undoped and doped with Ag and/or Sr obtained by galvanostatic pulsed electrochemical deposition. The coatings were investigated in terms of chemical bonds, contact angle and surface free energy, electrochemical behavior, in vitro biomineralization in acellular media (SBF and PBS), and biocompatibility with preosteoblasts cells (MC3T3-E1 cell line). The obtained results highlighted the beneficial impact of Ag and/or Sr on the HAp. The FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of hydroxyapatite within all coatings, while in terms of wettability, the contact angle and surface free energy investigations showed that all surfaces were hydrophilic. The in vitro behavior of MC3T3-E1 indicated that the presence of Sr in the HAp coatings as a unique doping agent or in combination with Ag elicited improved cytocompatibility in terms of cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. Therefore, the composite HAp-based coatings showed promising potential for bone regeneration applications.

Influence of leaves, branches and trunks on the propagation loss in 920-MHz on a mulberry farm

Abstract:Radio wave propagation characteristics were measured in 920-MHz band on a mulberry farm, and influence of leaves, branches and trunks was investigated by analyzing the measured data in three different environments and in two polarizations. RSSIs (Received Signal Strength Indicators) were measured at two propagation distances and converted to path losses. And, then they were compared among maturity stage, deciduous stage, and the case without plants. As a result, it was found that horizontal polarization was mainly influenced by leaves and that vertical polarization was mainly influenced by branches and trunks. The obtained radio wave propagation characteristics are useful for building a farm sensor network.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used in bone repair and regeneration because of its composition and structure similar to human bone. However, the artificially synthesized HA has poor mechanical properties, so it is often necessary to add a second phase to the powder as a supporting phase to enhance its mechanical properties. Strontium (Sr) has the properties of promoting the growth of bone cells, which can increase bone formation in the body and reduce bone self-absorption. Nevertheless, Sr-doped HA composites have been rarely reported in the literature in recent years. In this paper, Sr-doped HA was employed to be complexed with chitosan (CS) for the first time to prepare a composite coating that is dense and uniform, with good adhesion and ductility, in order to expand its clinical applications. Therefore, a series of HA samples doped with different Sr mole fraction (0 mol% (pure HA), 0.5 mol%, 1 mol%, 2 mol%, 4 mol%) were prepared by chemical precipitation method. Then the HA/CS composite coating doped with Sr was prepared on the stainless steel substrate by spin-coating technology. The results showed that Sr2+ ions had replaced part of Ca2+ ions and have been successfully doped into the HA lattice. The synthesized HA particles showed a shortrod-like morphology, and the substitution of Sr ions promoted the growth of Sr-doped HA crystals and increased its grain size. In addition, the synthesized Sr-doped HA/CS composite coating is dense and uniform. In vitro cell culture experiments showed that all composite coatings have good biocompatibility. The HA/CS coating with 4 mol% Sr ion doping is more conducive to cell proliferation, adhesion and osteogenic differentiation.

Abstract:Long-term biocompatible scaffolds based on chitosan (CS) encapsulated with hydroxyapatite (HAP) have been developed for orthopedic applications. The biocomposites consisting of magnesium (Mg)/strontium (Sr) co-dopant into were fabricated using a casting technique, whereas Mg(II) contribution was varied. The crystal growth seems to be in the c-axis upon the rising of Mg(II) content, whereas the c/a ratio changed from 0.72 to 0.73. Moreover, it was suggested that Mg(II) ions prefer to substitute Ca(1) rather than Ca(2) sites within HAP crystals. The investigation of surface morphology indicated that the Mg/Sr-HAP was formed as agglomerated grains with dimensions around 5.1-9.2, 6.2-11.4, 3.6-7.3, 3.1-18.3, and 6.1-18.3 μm, while the grains of CS were developed as 4.6-7.6, 3-14.3, 2.4-6.1, 9.1-30.5 and 6.2-9.1 μm for 0.0Mg/, 0.2Mg/, 0.4Mg/, 0.6Mg/, and 0.8Mg/, respectively. Moreover, the roughness average (Ra) increased from 37.3 to 48.4 nm for the lowest and the highest additional Mg(II). Furthermore, the compressive strength was investigated and exhibited that Mg(II) has induced high resistance to fracture, whereas compressive strength increased from 7.17±1.1 to 15.1±1.5 MPa for the highest Mg(II). The cell viability also was tested, and the high value (105.2±6.8 %) was achieved for the highest Mg(II). Finally, the corrosion behavior for the scaffolds through simulated body fluids was investigated and illustrated that the corrosion potential (ECorr) was shifted to positive values from -0.14 to -0.002 V upon the variation of Mg(II) contrition.

Abstract:Titanium (Ti) is the widely used implant material in clinic; however, failures still frequently occur due to its poor bioactivity and antibacterial property. To improve the bioactivity and antibacterial property, in this work, petaling micro-nanostructured hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings were firstly prepared on Ti surface by micro-arc oxidation (MAO), and then, the antibacterial agent—chitosan (CS) was loaded on the HA surfaces. The CS was loaded by two methods: One is anodic oxidation, and the other is the in situ MAO. The degradability, bioactivity, biocompatibility and antibacterial activity of the two kinds of HA/CS coatings were examined and compared by in vitro tests. The results showed that, the two-step method induced HA/CS coating had more CS on Ti surface, showing better antibacterial property; however, the in situ MAO-induced HA/CS coating had longer degradation time and better biological property. The better antibacterial property was due to the increased CS amount on HA surface. The prolonged degradation time was due to the mixed structure of HA and CS. And the good biological property was attributed to the improved surface roughness, hydrophilicity and exposed HA area. Considering the long-term needs of both antibacterial and biological properties for implant materials, the in situ MAO-induced HA/CS coating has a greater potential to be used as an implant material in clinics.

A comparison of 1995 WHO classification with 2003 ISN/RPS classification of lupus nephritis: a single centre observation.

Abstract:BACKGROUND In the past, lupus nephritis was histologically classified according to the 1995 WHO Classification. With the introduction of the 2003 ISN/RPS Classification, many nephropathology services converted to this new classification. This study was undertaken to compare both classification systems in a single centre practice. METHODS 103 consecutive adequate renal biopsies initially reported as lupus nephritis in the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya were reassessed using the criteria of both the 1995 WHO Classification and the 2003 ISN/ RPS Classification. RESULTS The relative prevalence for each class using the WHO Classification were: Class I (1%), Class II (8.7%), Class III (6.8%), Class IV (60.2%), Class V (20.4%), Class VI (2.9%) while the prevalence using the 2003 ISN/RPS Classification were: Class I (1%), Class II (8.7%), Class III (6.8%), Class IV (61.2%), Class V (21.3%), Class VI (1%). Both classifications were essentially comparable with regards to Classes I, II and III. The differences in Classes IV, V and VI were significant in potential to alter patient management. The identification of segmental lesions (Class IV-S) over and above a global nephritis (Class IV-G) deserves more focused clinicopathological studies to gauge whether these groups have different clinical manifestations and outcomes. With regards Class V, the ISN/RPS system, by requiring that all mixed classes be stipulated in the diagnostic line, minimizes the chances of patients missing out on additional treatment. The ISN/ RPS system has stricter criteria for Class VI, which again minimizes patients missing out on therapy. On the whole, the ISN/RPS system is more user-friendly as criteria are more clearly defined which translates to more benefits to patient care.
In Vitro Characterization of Hydroxyapatite-Based Coatings Doped with Mg or Zn Electrochemically Deposited on Nanostructured Titanium

Abstract:Biomaterials are an important and integrated part of modern medicine, and their development and improvement are essential. The fundamental requirement of a biomaterial is found to be in its interaction with the surrounding environment, with which it must coexist. The aim of this study was to assess the biological characteristics of hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based coatings doped with Mg and Zn ions obtained by the pulsed galvanostatic electrochemical method on the surface of pure titanium (cp-Ti) functionalized with titanium dioxide nanotubes (NTs TiO2) obtained by anodic oxidation. The obtained results highlighted that the addition of Zn or Mg into the HAp structure enhances the in vitro response of the cp-Ti surface functionalized with NT TiO2. The contact angle and surface free energy showed that all the developed surfaces have a hydrophilic character in comparison with the cp-Ti surface. The HAp-based coatings doped with Zn registered superior values than the ones with Mg, in terms of biomineralization, electrochemical behavior, and cell interaction. Overall, it can be said that the addition of Mg or Zn can enhance the in vitro behavior of the HAp-based coatings in accordance with clinical requirements. Antibacterial tests showed that the proposed HAp-Mg coatings had no efficiency against Escherichia coli, while the HAp-Zn coatings registered the highest antibacterial efficiency.
Impact of Gamma Irradiation on the Properties of Magnesium-Doped Hydroxyapatite in Chitosan Matrix

Abstract:This is the first report regarding the effect of gamma irradiation on chitosan-coated magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite (xMg = 0.1; 10 MgHApCh) layers prepared by the spin-coating process. The stability of the resulting 10 MgHApCh gel suspension used to obtain the layers has been shown by ultrasound measurements. The presence of magnesium and the effect of the irradiation process on the studied samples were shown by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS results obtained for irradiated 10 MgHApCh layers suggested that the magnesium and calcium contained in the surface layer are from tricalcium phosphate (TCP; Ca3(PO4)2) and hydroxyapatite (HAp). The XPS analysis has also highlighted that the amount of TCP in the surface layer increased with the irradiation dose. The energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) evaluation showed that the calcium decreases with the increase in the irradiation dose. In addition, a decrease in crystallinity and crystallite size was highlighted after irradiation. By atomic force microscopy (AFM) we have obtained images suggesting a good homogeneity of the surface of the non-irradiated and irradiated layers. The AFM results were also sustained by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images obtained for the studied samples. The effect of gamma-ray doses on the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectra of 10 MgHApCh composite layers was also evaluated. The in vitro antifungal assays proved that 10 MgHApCh composite layers presented a strong antifungal effect, correlated with the irradiation dose and incubation time. The study of the stability of the 10 MgHApCh gel allowed us to achieve uniform and homogeneous layers that could be used in different biomedical applications.

Effects of Composition on Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties of Hydroxyapatite/Gray Titania Coating Fabricated by Suspension Plasma Spraying

Abstract:This study aims at revealing the effect of composition on mechanical and antibacterial properties of hydroxyapatite/gray Titania coating for biomedical applications. HAp is a bioceramic material used as a plasma-sprayed coating to promote osseointegra-tion of femoral stems. Biomaterial coatings are fabricated mostly using atmospheric plasma spray (APS). However, the conventional plasma spray process requires hydrox-yapatite powder with good flow, and to prepare such free-flowing powder, agglomer-ation, such as spray drying, fusing, and crushing is used. Therefore, it is impossible to spray nano-powder using conventional methods. Here, we designed a suspension-feeding system to feed nanoparticles using a liquid carrier. Suspension plasma spray (SPS) successfully deposited homogeneous HAp/Gray Titania coating with less poros-ity on the surface of titanium substrates. The microstructure of coatings with differ-ent compositions was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy to identify the crystal structure. All results con-sistently demonstrated that SPS could transform Ti2 O3 into TiO2 with mixed Magneli phases, such as Ti4 O7 and Ti3 O5, which usually show photocatalytic activity. Interfacial strength, hardness, young modulus, and fracture toughness were also improved with a high concentration of TiO2. Antibacterial test for E.Coli under LED light re-vealed that SPSed HAp/Gray Titania coating could significantly enhance antibacterial properties. The possible underlying mechanism of enhanced antibacterial properties can be attributed to increased Magneli phases and better bacterial adhesion caused by hydrophilic properties due to submicron size particles. SPS can fabricate visible light-responsive antibacterial coating, which can be used for medical devices.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite (HAp), a member of the calcium phosphate family is the most commonly studied ceramic for various biomedical applications. Its physical, mechanical, and bioactive properties can be easily altered by substituting other elements or modifying the processing conditions. In the present study, the Sr 2+ and Sr 2+/ Zr 4+ substituted HAp have been synthesized by microwave processing at three different sintering temperatures . The effect of sintering temperature and doping/co-doping on HAp has been evaluated and compared by XRD , SEM, density, hardness, and bioactive properties. Lattice parameters, crystallinity , and crystallite size are observed to be dependent upon dopant and sintering temperature. Sr and Zr co-doped samples are observed to exhibit small grain size and lower hardness as compared to Sr-doped HAp. However, the cooping of Sr/Zr in HAp enhances its bioactivity in simulated body fluid solution as compared to single-doped Sr-HAp.

Exploring the physicochemical traits, antifungal capabilities, and 3D spatial complexity of hydroxyapatite with Ag+Mg2+ substitution in the biocomposite thin films

Abstract:The silver/magnesium doped hydroxyapatite (AgMgHAp, Ca10-x-yAgxMgy(PO4)6(OH)2, xAg=0.05 and yMg=0.02) nanocomposites coatings were deposited on Si substrate using the dip coating technique. The resulting coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The EDS analysis highlighted the presence of the constitutive elements of the silver/magnesium doped hydroxyapatite (AgMgHAp) nanocomposites coatings. The surface microtexture of the AgMgHAp was assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. The AFM data suggested the obtaining of a uniform deposited layer comprised of equally distributed nanoconglomerates. FT-IR studies highlighted the presence of vibrational modes associated with the phosphate and hydroxyl groups. No bands associated with silver or magnesium were observed. The XPS analysis highlighted the presence of the constituent elements of hydroxyapatite (Ca 2p, P 2 s, O 1 s), as well as dopants (Ag 3d, Mg 1 s and Mg 2p). The antifungal evaluation of AgMgHAp coatings was carried out using the Candida albicans ATCC 10231 fungal strain. The results of the antifungal assay revealed that the AgMgHAp coatings exhibited a strong inhibitory antifungal activity. Furthermore, the data highlighted that the AgMgHAp inhibited the development of biofilm on their surface. The results revealed that the antifungal activity of the coating varied based on the duration of incubation. On the other hand, the data also showed that AgMgHAp nanocomposites coatings inhibited the fungal cell adhesion and development from the early stages of the incubation. In addition to morphological analysis, we additionally take advantage of AFM images to investigate and explore the domain of fractal and multifractal analysis applied to the films under evaluation. Our studies indicates that nanocomposite coatings made from AgMgHAp demonstrate strong antifungal properties. Abstract:To investigate the N-glycosylation characteristics of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) produced by an industrial Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line that is currently used in a large scale manufacturing process, we cultured this cell strain in static mode. The produced rhEPO in the culture supernatant was analyzed using isoelectric focusing (IEF) and Ricinus communis agglutinin-I (RCA-I) lectin precipitation. The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and sialidase activity in the serum-free supernatant were assayed as well. The analyses revealed that this cell strain could produce rhEPO with high sialic acid content, but during prolonged culture, cell viability decreased with time whilst the activity of sialidase present in the supernatant increased. The loss in rhEPO quality was due to a decrease in terminal sialic acid on the N-glycans, caused by sialidase degradation. The methods and findings in this paper serve as basis for further investigation of industrial production process.
Study of Mg-Rich Sulfato-Calcium Hydroxyapatite Coating on Anodized Ti6Al4V-Alloy for Biomedical Applications

Abstract:The biomedical sector requires the use of composite materials whose properties can replace those of defective organs, especially bones, of which the Hydroxyapatite structure is the main component of bones and teeth. Herein, we report successful elaboration of new Mg-rich sulfato-calcium hydroxyapatite (SCHA) coating by cathodic electrodeposition on an anodized Ti6Al4V alloy substrate under bias voltages of 10, 20 and 30 V. The resulting deposits were well identified by numerous characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Anodizing the Ti-based substrate under a bias voltage of 20 V produces TiO 2 layers with ordered nanotube arrays of approximately (80-100 nm), which are completely damaged at 30 V, leading to an irregular porous structure. The deposits made at 10 and 20 V present cracks, unlike that made at 30 V which is more uniform and less rough. XRD analysis reveals both an amorphous structure for the latter and the existence of a crystalline to amorphous conversion as a function of the anodization voltage for the apatite deposition. Electrochemical tests performed in Hank's simulated body fluid (HSBF) confirm the formation of the apatite deposit which implies a chemical surface modification and reveal interesting anticorrosion properties for the apatite-coated samples, with the highest polarization resistance recorded for that treated at 20 V, with a corrosion current density ( i corr ) of 4.25 μA/cm 2 and a polarization resistance ( R p) of 4.60 kΩ cm 2 . The results obtained confirm both the nature and the structure of the produced deposits (TiO 2 layers and Mg-SCHA/TiO 2 ). Electrochemical tests performed in Hank's simulated body fluid (HSBF) reveal interesting anticorrosion properties for coated and anodized samples, compared to those uncoated, with the highest corrosion resistance recorded for the anodized sample at 10 V. This suggests that the biocompatible Mg-rich SCHAs deposit, elaborated by simple chemical route from biological waste could be suitable for biomedical purposes.

Abstract:Degradable and non-degradable biomaterials are two categories that can be used to classify the existing biomaterials, being a solution for eliminating a second surgical intervention of the implant when the tissue has properly recovered. In the present paper, the effect of deposition temperature on the structure, morphology, hardness, electrochemical evaluation, degradation properties and functional peptides adhesion of Mg and Si-doped hydroxyapatite was investigated. The coatings were obtained by RF magnetron sputtering technique at room temperature (RT) and 200 Â°C on AZ31B alloy substrate. Results showed that an increase in deposition temperature led to an improvement in hardness and reduced modulus of about 47%. From an electrochemical point of view, a comparative assessment of corrosion resistance was made as a function of the immersion medium used, highlighting the superior behaviour revealed by the coating deposited at elevated temperature when immersed in DMEM medium (icorr~12 ÂμA/cm2, Rcoat = 705 Î© cm2, Rct = 7624 Î© cm2). By increasing the deposition temperature up to 200 Â°C, the degradation rate of the coatings was slowed, more visible in the case of DMEM, which had a less aggressive effect after 14 days of immersion. Both deposition temperatures are equally suitable for further bio-inspired coating with a mussel-derived peptide, to facilitate biointegration.

Abstract:In this study, hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HA/CS) composite coatings were prepared by hydrothermal treatment on the surface of low-modulus Ti–25Nb–8Sn alloy to improve the surface bioactivity of the alloy. HA, the main mineral composition of the human skeleton, has excellent bioactivity and is often used as a surface coating on biometal implants. CS, a natural polymer with good antibacterial, hydrophilic and non-toxic characteristics, is often used as dermal regeneration templates, hemostatic agents and drug delivery systems. In this experiment, a natural crab shell was used as a raw material to prepare the HA/CS composite coating by alkali treatment and hydrothermal reaction at various temperatures. The microstructure, morphology and phase composition of the coating surfaces were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and FTIR, and the sample coated with HA/CS was soaked in simulated body fluid (SBF) to evaluate its bioactivity. The experimental results showed that the HA/CS composite coatings through hydrothermal treatment at various temperatures can be successfully fabricated on the surface of the Ti alloy. HA on the coating surface exhibited mainly spherical particles and contained A- and B-type carbonate. When the hydrothermal temperature was up to 200 °C, the spherical particles were approximately 20–40 nm. An ultrasonic vibration test was used to evaluate the adhesion of the coatings, showing that the CS exhibited significantly improved adhesion capacity to the substrate. After being soaked in SBF for 7 days, apatite was deposited on the entire surfaces of the HA/CS coatings, indicating that the coating possesses excellent bioactivity.

Surface and interface analysis of HAP/TiO2 composite films on Ti6Al4V

Abstract:The composite films constituted of hydroxyapatite (HAP) submicron particles embedded in the gel composed of the titania nanoparticles were prepared on commercial Ti6Al4V plates with titania buffer layer obtained by a spin-coating technique. The films were annealed in air at 450 ℃, 550 ℃ and 650 ℃, respectively. The phase formation, surface morphology, andinterfacial microstructure of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission-scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis. The results show that the as-prepared films are all well-crystallized, dense,homogeneous, and there was a close interfacial bond between the film and the substrate. The results of adhesion test indicate that there is a good bonding strength between the film and the substrate. The bone-like apatite formation on the surface of the films after immersion in acellular simulatedbody fluid(SBF) validated their bioactivities.
