Abstract:Agricultural production is being affected by increasingly harsh conditions caused by climate change. The vast majority of crops suffer growth and yield declines due to a lack of water or intense heat. Hence, commercial legume crops suffer intense losses of production (20-80%). This situation is even more noticeable in plants used as fodder for animals, such as alfalfa and pitch trefoil, since their productivity is linked not only to the number of seeds produced, but also to the vegetative growth of the plant itself. Thus, we decided to study the microbiota associated with their seeds in different locations on the Iberian Peninsula, with the aim of identifying culturable bacteria strains that have adapted to harsh environments and that can be used as biotreatments to improve plant growth and resistance to stress. As potentially inherited microbiota, they may also represent a treatment with medium- and long-term adaptative effects. Hence, isolated strains showed no clear relationship with their geographical sampling location, but had about 50% internal similarity with their model plants. Moreover, out of the 51 strains isolated, about 80% were capable of producing biofilms; around 50% produced mid/high concentrations of auxins and grew notably in ACC medium; only 15% were characterized as xerotolerant, while more than 75% were able to sporulate; and finally, 65% produced siderophores and more than 40% produced compounds to solubilize phosphates. Thus, Paenibacillus amylolyticus BB B2-A, Paenibacillus xylanexedens MS M1-C, Paenibacillus pabuli BB Oeiras A, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia MS M1-B and Enterobacter hormaechei BB B2-C strains were tested as plant bioinoculants in lentil plants (Lens culinaris Medik.), showing promising results as future treatments to improve plant growth under stressful conditions.

Abstract:Research on medicinal plants is essential for their conservation, propagation, resistance to environmental stress, and domestication. The use of organic nutrition has been demonstrated to improve soil fertility and plant quality. It is also important to study the effects of the Basic Cation Saturation Ratio (BCSR) approach, which is a topic where there is currently controversy and limited scientific information. Evaluating the growth and yields of Agastache mexicana subsp. mexicana (Amm) in different environments is crucial for developing effective propagation and domestication strategies. This includes examining warm and subhumid environments with rain in summer in comparison to mild environments with summer rain. Significant differences were observed in the effects of cold, waterlogging, and heat stresses on the plant's biomass yield and the morphometric-quantitative modeling by means of isolines. The biomass yield was 56% higher in environment one compared to environment two, 19% higher in environment one with organic nutrition, and 48% higher in environment two with organic nutrition compared to using only BCSR nutrition. In the second harvesting cycle, the plants in environment one did not survive, while the plants in environment two managed to survive without needing additional nutrition. Statistical and mathematical analyses provided information about the population or sample. Additionally, further analysis using isolines as a new approach revealed new insights into understanding phenology and growth issues.

Abstract:Poaceae represent the most important group of crops susceptible to abiotic stress. This large family of monocotyledonous plants, commonly known as grasses, counts several important cultivated species, namely wheat (Triticum aestivum), rice (Oryza sativa), maize (Zea mays), and barley (Hordeum vulgare). These crops, notably, show different behaviors under abiotic stress conditions: wheat and rice are considered sensitive, showing serious yield reduction upon water scarcity and soil salinity, while barley presents a natural drought and salt tolerance. During the green revolution (1940-1960), cereal breeding was very successful in developing high-yield crops varieties; however, these cultivars were maximized for highest yield under optimal conditions, and did not present suitable traits for tolerance under unfavorable conditions. The improvement of crop abiotic stress tolerance requires a deep knowledge of the phenomena underlying tolerance, to devise novel approaches and decipher the key components of agricultural production systems. Approaches to improve food production combining both enhanced water use efficiency (WUE) and acceptable yields are critical to create a sustainable agriculture in the future. This paper analyzes the latest results on abiotic stress tolerance in Poaceae. In particular, the focus will be directed toward various aspects of water deprivation and salinity response efficiency in Poaceae. Aspects related to cell wall metabolism will be covered, given the importance of the plant cell wall in sensing environmental constraints and in mediating a response; the role of silicon (Si), an important element for monocots' normal growth and development, will also be discussed, since it activates a broad-spectrum response to different exogenous stresses. Perspectives valorizing studies on landraces conclude the survey, as they help identify key traits for breeding purposes.

Abstract:Due to an increase in the consumption of food, feed, and fuel and to meet global food security needs for the rapidly growing human population, there is a necessity to obtain high-yielding crops that can adapt to future climate changes. Currently, the main feed source used for ruminant livestock production is forage grasses. In temperate climate zones, perennial grasses grown for feed are widely distributed and tend to suffer under unfavorable environmental conditions. Genome editing has been shown to be an effective tool for the development of abiotic stress-resistant plants. The highly versatile CRISPR-Cas system enables increasingly complex modifications in genomes while maintaining precision and low off-target frequency mutations. In this review, we provide an overview of forage grass species that have been subjected to genome editing. We offer a perspective view on the generation of plants resilient to abiotic stresses. Due to the broad factors contributing to these stresses the review focuses on drought, salt, heat, and cold stresses. The application of new genomic techniques (e.g., CRISPR-Cas) allows addressing several challenges caused by climate change and abiotic stresses for developing forage grass cultivars with improved adaptation to the future climatic conditions. Genome editing will contribute towards developing safe and sustainable food systems.

Abstract:Increased periods of water shortage and higher temperatures, together with a reduction in nutrient availability, have been proposed as major factors that negatively impact plant development. Photosynthetic CO2 assimilation is the basis of crop production for animal and human food, and for this reason, it has been selected as a primary target for crop phenotyping/breeding studies. Within this context, knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the response and acclimation of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation to multiple changing environmental conditions (including nutrients, water availability, and rising temperature) is a matter of great concern for the understanding of plant behavior under stress conditions, and for the development of new strategies and tools for enhancing plant growth in the future. The current review aims to analyze, from a multi-perspective approach (ranging across breeding, gas exchange, genomics, etc.) the impact of changing environmental conditions on the performance of the photosynthetic apparatus and, consequently, plant growth.

Abstract:Background and aimsDrought events, agricultural practices and plant communities influence microbial and soil abiotic parameters which can feedback to fodder production. This study aimed to determine which soil legacies influence plant biomass production and nutritional quality, and its resistance and recovery to extreme weather events.MethodsIn a greenhouse experiment, soil legacy effects on Lolium perenne were examined, first under optimal conditions, and subsequently during and after drought. We used subalpine grassland soils previously cultivated for two years with grass communities of distinct functional composition, and subjected to combinations of climatic stress and simulated management.ResultsThe soil legacy of climatic stress increased biomass production of Lolium perenne and its resistance and recovery to a new drought. This beneficial effect resulted from higher nutrient availability in soils previously exposed to climatic stresses due to lower competitive abilities and resistance of microbial communities to a new drought. This negative effect on microbial communities was strongest in soils from previously cut and fertilized grasslands or dominated by conservative grasses.ConclusionIn subalpine grasslands more frequent climatic stresses could benefit fodder production in the short term, but threaten ecosystem functioning and the maintenance of traditional agricultural practices in the long term.

Ecophysiological Responses of Tall Wheatgrass Germplasm to Drought and Salinity

Abstract:Tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Barkworth and D.R. Dewey) is an important, highly salt-tolerant C3 forage grass. The objective of this work was to learn about the ecophysiological responses of accessions from different environmental origins under drought and salinity conditions, to provide information for selecting superior germplasm under combined stress in tall wheatgrass. Four accessions (P3, P4, P5, P9) were irrigated using combinations of three salinity levels (0, 0.1, 0.3 M NaCl) and three drought levels (100%, 50%, 30% water capacity) over 90 days in a greenhouse. The control treatment showed the highest total biomass, but water-use efficiency (WUE), δ13C, proline, N concentration, leaf length, and tiller density were higher under moderate drought or/and salinity stress than under control conditions. In tall wheatgrass, K+ functions as an osmoregulator under drought, attenuated by salinity, and Na+ and Cl- function as osmoregulators under salinity and drought, while proline is an osmoprotector under both stresses. P3 and P9, from environments with mild/moderate stress, prioritized reproductive development, with high evapotranspiration and the lowest WUE and δ13C values. P4 and P5, from more stressful environments, prioritized vegetative development through tillering, showing the lowest evapotranspiration, the highest δ13C values, and different mechanisms for limiting transpiration. The δ13C value, leaf biomass, tiller density, and leaf length had high broad-sense heritability (H2), while the Na+/K+ ratio had medium H2. In conclusion, the combined use of the δ13C value, Na+/K+ ratio, and canopy structural variables can help identify accessions that are well-adapted to drought and salinity, also considering the desirable plant characteristics. Tall wheatgrass stress tolerance could be used to expand forage production under a changing climate.

Abstract:Based on the authors' own research and other Chinese and overseas research, physiological change of Festuca arundinacea under various adverse conditions, including drought, cold, hot, acid, alkaline, saline, and heavy metal conditions, are systematically addressed. Also, the influence of fungal endophytes and plant growth regulators on Festuca arundinacea is looked at. In addition, the biochemical identification of Festuca arundinacea varieties, as well as the use of transgenesis in genetic engineering, were looked at. Research prospects for the physiological ecological and biochemical characteristics of Festuca arundinacea are discussed. In particular, it is suggested that resistance mechanisms to environmental stresses and related aspects in molecular biology will be the areas of emphasis in the future, in order to expand Festuca arundinacea research and provide scientific basis for its utilization.

Abstract:As plants are sessile, they cannot escape exposure to multiple environmental stresses. Over the course of evolution, a range of morphological and physiological adaptations has been developed in order to maximize their chances of survival. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is the most extensively cultivated forage legume in the world, while its yield and growing range are limited by abiotic stress. Physiology, genetic and molecular level studies have revealed complex regulatory processes that coordinate stress adaptation and tolerance, which are integrated at various levels. This review summarizes the current body of knowledge regarding the physiological, transcriptional, metabolic and genetic/epigenetic basis of the alfalfa stress response, along with the key signal transduction processes involved. Gathering the knowledge together will contribute to a more systematic understanding of the adaption to stress response in alfalfa, as well as provide guidance towards improving the crop through breeding.

Abstract:Abiotic stress, brought about by salinity, drought, extreme temperatures and oxidative stress are serious threats to agriculture and result in a huge reduction of production.Drought and salinity are becoming major threats throughout the world.Abiotic stress leads to a series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular changes that adversely affect plant growth and development (Wang et al., 2001).In order to survive from these harsh stresses, forage plants have developed precise and complicated tolerance mechanisms at the morphological, physiological and molecular levels.Under serious threat, forage plants can change the shape of the leaves and roots to decrease the water loss.Some plants have evolved special structures, such as salt glands to excrete salt.At the physiological level, respiratory, photosynthesis metabolism and osmotic adjustments etc. all change in order to resist stress (Chaves, 1991; Sheng, 2010;Yang et al., 2007).In fact, all of these changes are related to gene expression.The complex plant response to abiotic stress involves many genes and molecular mechanisms.In the past several decades, multiple genes responding to drought, salt, low-temperature and oxidative stress have been identified.These genes are divided into two groups (Shinozaki et al., 2003).The first group functions to directly protect the plant against stress, involving key enzymes for osmolyte biosynthesis, LEA (late embryogenesis abundant) proteins, detoxification enzymes and enzymes involved in many metabolic processes.The other group consists of contained protein factors involved in the regulation of signal transduction, including various transcription factors, proteins kinases, protein phosphatases, enzymes involved in phospholipid metabolism, and other signaling molecules (Yamaguchi-Shinozaki & Shinozaki, 2006).Genes have been used extensively to improve the stress-tolerance in crop and forage crops.The investigation of stress-tolerance genes will increase our knowledge of tolerance mechanisms, which could in turn be used to promote improvements in forage crop plants tolerance. Abstract:Abstract Food production and food security depend on the ability of crops to cope with anthropogenic climate change and successfully produce seed. To guarantee food production well into the future, contemporary plant scientists in Latin America must carry out research on how plants respond to environmental stressors such as temperature, drought, and salinity. This review shows the opportunities to apply these results locally and abroad and points to the gaps that still exist in terms of reproductive processes with the purpose to better link research with translational work in plant breeding and biotechnology. Suggestions are put forth to address these gaps creatively in the face of chronic low investment in science with a focus on applicability.
Abiotic Stress in Crop Species: Improving Tolerance by Applying Plant Metabolites

Abstract:Reductions in crop yields brought about by abiotic stress are expected to increase as climate change, and other factors, generate harsher environmental conditions in regions traditionally used for cultivation. Although breeding and genetically modified and edited organisms have generated many varieties with greater abiotic stress tolerance, their practical use depends on lengthy processes, such as biological cycles and legal aspects. On the other hand, a non-genetic approach to improve crop yield in stress conditions involves the exogenous application of natural compounds, including plant metabolites. In this review, we examine the recent literature related to the application of different natural primary (proline, l-tryptophan, glutathione, and citric acid) and secondary (polyols, ascorbic acid, lipoic acid, glycine betaine, α-tocopherol, and melatonin) plant metabolites in improving tolerance to abiotic stress. We focus on drought, saline, heavy metal, and temperature as environmental parameters that are forecast to become more extreme or frequent as the climate continues to alter. The benefits of such applications are often evaluated by measuring their effects on metabolic, biochemical, and morphological parameters in a variety of crop plants, which usually result in improved yields when applied in greenhouse conditions or in the field. As this strategy has proven to be an effective way to raise plant tolerance to abiotic stress, we also discuss the prospect of its widespread implementation in the short term.
Recovery from Salinity and Drought Stress in the Perennial Sarcocornia fruticosa vs. the Annual Salicornia europaea and S. veneta

Abstract:Current agricultural problems, such as the decline of freshwater and fertile land, foster saline agriculture development. Salicornia and Sarcocornia species, with a long history of human consumption, are ideal models for developing halophyte crops. A greenhouse experiment was set up to compare the response of the perennial Sarcocornia fruticosa and the two annual Salicornia europaea and S. veneta to 30 days of salt stress (watering with 700 mM NaCl) and water deficit (complete withholding of irrigation) separate treatments, followed by 15 days of recovery. The three species showed high tolerance to salt stress, based on the accumulation of ions (Na+, Cl−, Ca2+) in the shoots and the synthesis of organic osmolytes. These defence mechanisms were partly constitutive, as active ion transport to the shoots and high levels of glycine betaine were also observed in non-stressed plants. The three halophytes were sensitive to water stress, albeit S. fruticosa to a lesser extent. In fact, S. fruticosa showed a lower reduction in shoot fresh weight than S. europaea or S. veneta, no degradation of photosynthetic pigments, a significant increase in glycine betaine contents, and full recovery after the water stress treatment. The observed differences could be due to a better adaptation of S. fruticosa to a drier natural habitat, as compared to the two Salicornia species. However, a more gradual stress-induced senescence in the perennial S. fruticosa may contribute to greater drought tolerance in this species.

Abstract:Sustaining grassland production in a changing climate requires an understanding of plant adaptation strategies, including trait plasticity under warmer and drier conditions. However, our knowledge to date disproportionately relies on aboveground responses, despite the importance of belowground traits in maintaining aboveground growth, especially in grazed systems. We subjected a perennial pasture grass, Festuca arundinacea, to year-round warming (+3 °C) and cool-season drought (60% rainfall reduction) in a factorial field experiment to test the hypotheses that: (i) drought and warming increase carbon allocation belowground and shift root traits towards greater resource acquisition and (ii) increased belowground carbon reserves support post-drought aboveground recovery. Drought and warming reduced plant production and biomass allocation belowground. Drought increased specific root length and reduced root diameter in warmed plots but increased root starch concentrations under ambient temperature. Higher diameter and soluble sugar concentrations of roots and starch storage in crowns explained aboveground production under climate extremes. However, the lack of association between post-drought aboveground biomass and belowground carbon and nitrogen reserves contrasted with our predictions. These findings demonstrate that root trait plasticity and belowground carbon reserves play a key role in aboveground production during climate stress, helping predict pasture responses and inform management decisions under future climates.

Abstract:Climate change poses significant challenges to global agriculture, with rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events threatening crop yields. These changes exceed the adaptability thresholds of many crops, decreasing their yield and threatening food security. At plant physiological levels, climate change‐induced stressors disrupt photosynthesis, growth, and reproductive processes, contributing to a reduced productivity. Furthermore, the negative impacts of climate change on agriculture are exacerbated by anthropogenic factors, with agriculture itself contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. To mitigate these challenges, various approaches have been explored. This work reviews the most important physical, chemical, and biological strategies most commonly used in a broad range of agricultural crops. Among physical strategies, increasing water use efficiency without yield reduction through different irrigation strategies, and the use of foliar treatments with reflective properties to mitigate the negative effects of different stresses have been proven to be effective. Concerning chemical approaches, the exogenous treatment of plants with chemicals induces existing molecular and physiological plant defense mechanisms, enhancing abiotic stress tolerance. Regarding biological treatments, plant inoculation with mycorrhiza and plant growth‐promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can improve enzymatic antioxidant capacity and mineral solubilization, favoring root and plant growth and enhance plant performance under stressful conditions. While these strategies provide valuable short‐ to medium‐term solutions, there is a pressing need for new biotechnological approaches aimed at developing genotypes resistant to stressful conditions. Collaborative efforts among researchers, policymakers, and agricultural stakeholders are essential to ensure global food security in the face of ongoing climate challenges.

Abstract:Drought and salinity are among the most important environmental factors that hampered agricultural productivity worldwide. Both stresses can induce several morphological, physiological, biochemical, and metabolic alterations through various mechanisms, eventually influencing plant growth, development, and productivity. The responses of plants to these stress conditions are highly complex and depend on other factors, such as the species and genotype, plant age and size, the rate of progression as well as the intensity and duration of the stresses. These factors have a strong effect on plant response and define whether mitigation processes related to acclimation will occur or not. In this review, we summarize how drought and salinity extensively affect plant growth in agriculture ecosystems. In particular, we focus on the morphological, physiological, biochemical, and metabolic responses of plants to these stresses. Abstract:Plants are continuously exposed to stress conditions, such that they have developed sophisticated and elegant survival strategies, which are reflected in their phenotypic plasticity, priming capacity, and memory acquisition. Epigenetic mechanisms play a critical role in modulating gene expression and stress responses, allowing malleability, reversibility, stability, and heritability of favourable phenotypes to enhance plant performance. Considering the urgency to improve our agricultural system because of going impacting climate change, potential and sustainable strategies rely on the controlled use of eustressors, enhancing desired characteristics and yield and shaping stress tolerance in crops. However, for plant breeding purposes is necessary to focus on the use of eustressors capable of establishing stable epigenetic marks to generate a transgenerational memory to stimulate a priming state in plants to face the changing environment.

Abstract:The productivity and spatial distribution of plants, particularly many agronomical and horticultural crop plants of commercial importance, are severely restricted by a variety of environmental factors. Several environmental factors adversely affect plant growth and development and final yield performance of a crop. Drought, salinity, nutrient imbalances (including mineral toxicities and deficiencies) and extremes of temperature are among the major environmental constraints to crop productivity worldwide. When plants experience the unfavorable environmental conditions associated with high levels of salt, drought or low temperature, plant cells protect themselves from the stress of high concentrations of intracellular salts by accumulating a variety of small organic metabolites that are referred to collectively as compatible solutes (Bohnert et al., 1995). It is estimated that less than 10% of the world’s arable lands may be free of major environmental stresses (Dudal, 1976), with drought and salinity stresses being the most widespread (Ashraf, 1994). Abstract:Root exudates play an essential role in plant-soil-abiotic stress interactions. However, we still know little about the influence of stress combinations on the root exudation profile. Using targeted and untargeted metabolomics, here we test the effect of drought, heat stress, and their combination on the maize root exudates, also considering the differences that might exist between root types (seminal and primary) and root zones (apical and sub-apical). In addition, we built an analytical framework that relate the root exudation profile with the characterization of the rhizosphere bacterial community, enabling us to dissect the interactions between specific root exudates and microbial taxa. Our results suggest that the composition of root exudates has a different outcome according to the single or combined stress and to the root zone but not between root types. Further, we found that stress-specific exudates influence the relative abundance of specific microbial taxa, some of which are known to be beneficial microorganisms. Therefore, the stress-specific root exudate composition selecting specific microbial taxa, here observed, represent a contribute on the effects of climate changes on crops increasing thus the potential impact on the current trend of crafting agricultural practices within a wider point of view of plants-microbe-environment interactions.
